Book Description

Backscattered scanning electron microscopy (BSE) reveals the minerals, textures, and fabrics of sediments and rocks in much greater detail than is possible with conventional optical microscopy. Backscattered Scanning Electron Microscopy provides a concise summary of the BSE technique. This comprehensive guide uses abundant images to illustrate the type of information BSE yields and the application of the technique to the study of sediments and sedimentary rocks. The authors review the use of this petrographic technique on all the major sedimentary rock types, including sediment grains, sandstones, shales, carbonate rocks, rock varnish, and glauconite. They also describe image analysis techniques that allow quantification of backscattered scanning electron microscope images. Heavily illustrated and lucidly written, this book will provide researchers and graduate students with the most current research on this important geological tool. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A capable review of an underpublicized geologic area
I bought this book in Charleston, S.C., the site of the East Coast's biggest earthquake since the Republic was founded. It seems less and less people know that. Likewise, the Carolina Bays seem an increasingly obscure geological phenomenon. This book will cure those gaps in the general public's knowledge and provide an entertaining, competent read at the same time. The State of South Carolina has many other fascinating features, each of which are discussed in a manner that is neither demeaningly simple nor unduly complex. The book could have used more photos, particularly color shots of the state's western areas, many of which are subtle beauty spots the year around. This book is a fine guide, however, and is one of the better state-based geology texts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting geology, but not a field guide
This book was written by a middle-school science teacher with a doctorate in education. As a lifelong South Carolina resident, I found it interesting and challenging enough for adult readers such as myself, but there are only a moderate number of photos and drawings, and only 5 color plates, plus the front and back covers. The book's strengths, for my purposes, are the lists of the rocks and minerals likely to be found in each region of the state, plus the detailed explanations of how they came to be here; and the fascinating history of the gold rush in South Carolina, which I was unaware had taken place. Other people with other interests might enjoy the chapter on the mysterious "Carolina Bays" or the one about fossils, which is particularly long and detailed. ... Read more

Book Description

Advances in Botanical Research is a multi-volume publication that brings together reviews by recognized experts on subjects of importance to those involved in botanical research. For more than thirty years, Advances in Botanical Research has earned a reputation for excellence in the field. For those working on plant pathology, Advances in Plant Pathology has also carved a niche in the plant sciences during its decade of publication.
Academic Press has merged Advances in Plant Pathology into Advances in Botanical Research. The plant science community will find that the merger of these two serials will provide one comprehensive resource for the field. To ensure complete coverage, John Andrews and Inez Tommerup, the editors of Advances in Plant Pathology, have joined the editorial board of the new series, which will include equal coverage of plant pathology and botany in both thematic and mixed volumes. The first few volumes of the new series will be slanted toward botany or plant pathology; however, future eclectic volumes will be fully integrated.
The resulting synergy of these two serials greatly benefits the plant science community by providing a more comprehensive resource under one roof. The joint aim is to continue to include the very best articles, thereby maintaining the status of a high impact factor review series.

Book Description

There are three types of rockigneous, metamorphic and sedimentary. Sedimentary rocks form from the weathering, erosion, transportation and deposition of older rocks. Applied Sedimentology describes the formation, transportation and deposition of sediment, and the post-depositional processes that change soft sediment into sedimentary rock. Sedimentary rocks include sandstones, limestones and mudstones. All the world's coal, most of its water and fossil fuels, and many mineral deposits occur in sedimentary rocks. Applied Sedimentology shows how the study of sediments aids the exploration for and exploitation of natural resources, including water, ores and hydrocarbons.

*Completely revised edition; Like its precursor, it describes sediments from sand grains to sedimentary basins; Features up-to date account and critique of sequence and cyclostratigraphy
*Extensively illustrated with photos and remotely sensed sea bed images describing sedimentary processes, products and depositional systems; Color plates illustrate sediment textures, lithologies, pore types, diagenetic textures, and carbonate and clastic sequence stratigraphic models
*Emphasises the applications of sedimentology to the exploration for and exploitation of natural resources, including water, ores and hydrocarbons
*Extensive references and up-to-date bibliography for further study

Book Description

From the author/illustrator team that produced the bestselling Reading the Forested Landscape comes this fascinating and beautiful natural history of North America's granite summit balds. This fascinating new book focuses on a rare and dramatic landscape: the granite summit balds of North American mountains. Tom Wessels synthesizes history, geology, biology, and personal narrative to enhance our understanding and appreciation of these high, wild places. He explores the unique and fragile ecosystem that is common to exposed granite expanses from Acadia to Yosemite—how it evolved slowly over millennia, and how it is threatened today by foot traffic and overuse. Wessels' dramatic photographs and Brian Cohen's beautifully detailed illustrations bring the denizens of the granite bald to life. The mountains they celebrate include: Acadia National Park in Maine; the White Mountains of New Hampshire; the Adirondacks of New York; the Wind Rivers of Wyoming; the Beartooths of Montana; the Enchantments of Washington; and Yosemite National Park in California. 18 black & white photographs, 30 illustrations, 1 map, glossary, index. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLANT !!!!
First off, I loved this book. I know some will poo poo this book for not being a hardcore geology book, but thats what makes it so good. Mr. Wessells gives a very good geology course limited to the granite outcroppings in the U.S. and he does it so that is is very interesting. At times I felt like I was right there at his side as he described the landscape he was in. I had to limit myself to a chapter a day, though I cheated a couple of times, I could have read it in one sitting. I sure wish my geo classes in college had been this interesting.
Brian Cohen's illustrations are fantastic as well.
My only disappointment was the author's photographs, though that can be forgiven fro writing such a good book. It is now a permanent part of my library. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Colorful rock and mineral manual
Not a must have for hard core rockhounds.Colorful presentaton of about 500 different rock specimens grouped according to their streak. Not impressive from a scientific and mineralogic standpoint in terms of information on individual species. The highlight of this book is the impressive array of colorful plates depicting the specimens.Common collecting locales are given. This book should be considered more of a secondary rock and mineral manual. Not particularly useful out in the field.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good value quick identifier, with some irritations
Quick mineral identifier, with a few columns of data on the left and small but quality colour pix on the right for 500 different entries, classified by streak colour and hardness. Comprehensive enough for abeginning/intermediate collector, but the lack of connecting text preventsany appreciation of relationships and associations between minerals, ordetailed locality information. Emphasis on European localities may be novelfor American readers. My main problems with this book lie in thetranslation. The translator is evidently not a bilingual mineralogist, andsome translated terms are plain wrong. In English, cleavage is"perfect", not "complete", gold and silver are "native", not "pure" (they aren't!), and no-one willunderstand "Glass Bead Ore" as meaning "Kidney Ore"(botyroidal hematite). Equally confusing is the choice of odontolite (avivianite-stained fossil tusk) and coral as specimens, when both areobviously not minerals. Beware under-researched or erroneous localities(e.g. Leadhills is in Scotland, not England!). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good find
I have a copy of this book that I bought in the 1980's. It's a great book if you already know about minerals. The map references are very good, but it would be nice to have them updated to use gps coordinates instead of "township and range". For each mineral, locations are shown by county, so it's pretty easy to start with a mineral and get an idea of where to find it. However, if you're in a specific place, and wondering what you can find there, it's a lot of work because there's no cross reference by location. It's the most complete book on where to find minerals in California that I've ever seen, and I'd buy a copy even at today's price... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Wax Modeling
This book is one of the best illustrated works devoted to making wax models for jewelry that I have purchased. I have been making jewelry models for over 30 years and still discovered textural techniques and materials in Practical Wax Modeling that I was not familiar with previously. Due to the fact that the authors are Japanese, the book reflects their design and technique approach. This work covers a wide range of tools, and details both the carving and build up of wax models. I would recommend this book as a valuable addition to any jewelry maker's library. ... Read more
