1-0 out of 5 stars Fun & Games is lame, lame, lame!
I am planning a family reunion and need some fun, creative ideas, so scanned the good ol' Amazon database for something helpful. I discovered this book, and ordered it. What I found between its covers were a bunch of ridiculously lame games, and largely unrealistic suggestions and silly ideas for what would amount, in my mind, to the family reunion from hell, should anyone actually put these goofy ideas into practice. (I certainly will not!) Some may find these games and suggestions fun and creative, but I just hope that I don't have ocassion to attend a family reunion that's been planned by them. I did not find one single idea that I'm willing to use in this book. On the other hand, I've since found magazine articles with some very good ideas for family gatherings, which I definitely will use. This book stinks!

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent idea book for activities for all ages
I found this book to be helpful not only for family reunions, but also for birthday party ideas for my kids. The games part was especially strong, but I thought the reunion section could have been more helpful. Bring on Book 2! I want to play more games!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Teacher Turned Full-Time Mommy!
I orderer this book because I am currently a high school teacher with little experience with small children. I am a first time mom with a very busy two year old. Because I love planning and I understand that children of all ages need a fairly structured day, I was looking for a book that would help me better understand what a two year old would like to do and give me a daily, weekly or monthly plan to follow. The book is broken up into months and then into weeks. For instance, July has a heavy focus on our country's birth in the first week and then it moves you and your cherub to other summertime activities. The author seems to enjoy tradition, hands-on activities and themes for the entire month. She provides some good ideas and a parent can expand the ideas to suit their needs. As a teacher, I fully understand how important it is to create "lesson plans" for our children, that it's important to keep a scheduled day and that reading and singing need to be a big part of it all. Jan Brennan has reminded me of all the songs I used to sing from my childhood and she has a very extensive list of books to read to your child (I haven't checked yet, but I'm sure one could get the books at your local library or from Amazon.com!). With Brennan's help, I am looking forward to getting our day ready the night before and collecting supplies on Sunday before the week starts. My teaching days are far from over!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clever and fun activities for toddlers
The activities in this book for toddlers are organized chronologically by month, and then divided by week. Each month has a theme (or treasure as the author calls them). For example, January's theme is winter, for March it's music and movement, for July it's freedom, and for November, thankfulness. The weekly themes are borrowed from a nursery rhyme. There is a wonderful mix of suggested books to read, songs based on familiar melodies, recipes, and activities such as games, exercise, and plays, which both teach and entertain. We've found this a really useful and fun book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas but maybe a little advanced for 2's
This book is just what I was looking for! Activities are organized by every week of the year. There are seasonal activities, a short book list, recipes, songs, field trips and fingerplays. The activities are easily done with items around the house. I especially liked that the ideas were geared toward one child or a small group of children instead of a day care setting. I think the book will become even more useful next year when my toddler is a preschooler. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for parents
After reading Parents Are Teachers, Too, I'm convinced that the first two chapters should be required reading for all parents. The author, Claudia Jones, touches on some of the most important aspects of being a parent. The roles of the parent as an educator, and the influence parents have on the development of their child's self-esteem. I can easily recall all of the social influences that constantly barraged my self-esteem while growing up. I can also recall how my parents never gave up encouraging me. Through their teaching, love, realistic expectations and trust, I gained confidence in my abilities and myself. Claudia explains how teaching your children is not only fundamental to parenting, but also develops trust, models appropriate behavior, assists in closer bonding between parent and child, and creates true quality time.

Claudia's approach is both practical and informative. She has created a book that is in reality, a reference for the first six years. The activities are easy to understand and perform. For most activities, the only materials needed are a parent, a child, some patience, some encouragement, some love, and some time. I was pleased that the book also included educational components, such as the Stages of Learning (by Jean Piaget) and Alternatives to Television.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift for new parents!
Every parent wants their kids to grow up smart. This book gives helpful ideas that can help parents educate their children without them realizing it. For example: you see a dog, you tell your child it is a red dog, if your child still seems interested, continue to tell them it is an Irish Setter... when they lose interest stop giving more detail. I have read this book 3 times, and strive to read it once a year because I pick up helpful tricks for the next level of learning each time. ... Read more

To help teachers provide developmentally appropriate care and learn how to promote the learning of individual infants in their care, the authors have assembled dozens of activities in Beginning with Babies, an easy-to-use guide to things to do with children from birth through fifteen months.

Kinney and Ahrens, authors of Tangling with Toddlers, list the materials needed for each activity, how to make the most of interactive development with the activity, as well as "why" the activity is good for the baby. Chapters include development in vision and tactile skills, language and hearing skills, motor skills, and emotional/social growth skills.

Beginning with Babies is the perfect book for infant program teachers, family child care providers, and parents who want to make the most of the fun they have with babies! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A helpful tool for Christian parents of teens
Here is a helpful tool for Christian parents of teens who ask the question, "What movie do you want to see tonight?" It also helps to answer the question, "Why?"

"Movie Nights" is edited by Bob Smithouser, of Focus on the Family's "Plugged in Magazine." In his introduction, Smithouser writes, "Parents, you have a wonderful opportunity before you. Aside from the simple pleasure of spending time together and discussing films over a big bowl of hot-buttered popcorn, there are teachable moments in these modern parables and character studies. We have a brief window, usually when our children are between the ages of 13 and 18, to watch and discuss mature-minded movies *together*, before they're out on their own."

In this helpful introduction, Smithouser states that the pitfalls of a legalistic approach "often breeds rebellion" and the other extreme, permissiveness "inevitably leads to indecent exposure." He goes on to say, "the answer lies somewhere in between. That's because teaching discernment inspires critical thinking based on clearly defined boundaries, bonds families, and gives adolescents life skills they'll carry with them into adulthood."

He makes clear that Focus on the Family does not necessarily endorse the films suggested in this book. The 25 titles range from G to PG-13 ratings, with the majority of titles made since 1990. I personally think the list is a wonderful selection (based on the films I've seen).

Here's the complete list, in alphabetical order: Apollo 13; Chariots of Fire; The Count of Monte Cristo; Ever After; Fiddler on the Roof; Galaxy Quest; Groundhog Day; Hoosiers; It's a Wonderful Life; A Knight's Tale; Life is Beautiful; Little Women; The Mission; Mr. Holland's Opus; October Sky; The Princess Bride; Quiz Show; Remember the Titans; Searching for Bobby Fischer; Sense and Sensibility; Sergeant York; Shadowlands; To Kill a Mockingbird; The Truman Show; and Unbreakable.

The section for each movie gives the rating, mentions themes, the running time, stars and the director. Then the body of each chapter discusses cautions; story summary; things to do "before you watch," Bible bookmarks with related scripture references; talking points, follow-up activity and "just for fun" information about the film.

There are two appendixes. The first, called "Hollywood and the Bible," provides some topics for discussion "across the dinner table" on things like character, despair, discernment and human nature. The second appendix discusses "the power of story" by analyzing the classic Jimmy Stewart film, "It's a Wonderful Life." This chapter alone would be helpful for any student studying literature in a high school English class.

It might also be added that Plugged In Magazine has many more reviews that can be found on the Focus on the Family web site. But a book like this is helpful for pointing you in the right direction at the outset, as opposed to wading through reviews on this and other sites (or in other books) until you find an acceptable film you all will like. ... Very good, practical recipes & snack ideas, theme party ideas, costumes, decor, games, etcetera.

Not sure why the amazon people put the reading level at 4 - 8, because while this is loaded with great illustrations & snippets of text for those ages, it is primarily a how-to book for parents of kids 3 or 4 to 11 or 12. 3-0 out of 5 stars Good if you remember how you did the last wedding
This book has some good tidbits in it, especially for how to include children in your upcoming nuptials. However, I was disappointed to find that it sometimes glossed over important details, such as suggestions for wording invitations to a second wedding, and a list of suggested floral pieces, saying "You already know this". For some of us, it has been quite some time since the frantic flurry of first-time wedding planning, so we do NOT remember this. Also lists a lot of quotes and commercial sources from businesses, which seemed a bit odd. This book has some interesting ideas, but you'll almost certainly need another book on wedding planning to supplement the information not included.

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointing
I was really looking forward to reading this book because the foreword is titled "Second Time Jitters" and explains that it's perfectly normal for second-time brides to feel apprehensive about going through the whole wedding thing again. "After all, you vowed to love, honor, and respect for all eternity." So, what exactly did those vows mean and can I say them again with confidence? What happens if the groom is getting married for the first time and he wants the big wedding with all the trimming? Naylor says that it's okay to feel nervous, but remember that I'm a "completely different person" than I was in my first marriage. Okay!

Great beginning. Two pages. Unfortunately the remaining 25 chapters repeat every other how-to wedding manual. Very disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars So helpful!
Finally! A book on second weddings that doesn't sound like every other wedding planning book for first-timers! I loved that it gives solid planning advice AND also talks about how to deal with your family, how to include your kids in the wedding, and deal with any nervousness you have about getting married a second time. Great ideas on how to make your wedding different from the first, and dispels old etiquette rules about what you can and can't do at a second wedding. I feel a lot better about my wedding plans since I read this, and I'm definitely going to use more of these ideas.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why Bother?
Very few original ideas - most are trite "been there, done that" suggestions. You'd be as well off with a few magazines and a traditional book.

1-0 out of 5 stars 1001 ways?
1001 ways? I think if someone took the time to count, this book comes up short. I didn't find anything worthwhile.
Having planned my own first wedding, (even though it was all those years ago) I thought most of the tips were pure common sense. I have helped friends with weddings and spent some time "surfing" for information on the Internet.
This book may be better for someone with more limited experience. ... Read more

This book teaches kids about very bad substances and should not be distributed. This book should be used for adults who smoke the plant, and will be usefull for them because this explains the effects of the plant on a persons high

5-0 out of 5 stars ~WoW~ Fun, concise, inspiring!
I picked up this book at the library last summer along with a bunch of other herb books. I don't think I ever opened the other ones up at all. I renewed this book three times, copied the recipes and advice to notecard form, and I finally bought my own. It is the *best* introduction to herbalism I have found yet. It is written for kids but adults can benefit from it just as much, if not more. This book is full of love and awe for plants and their special properties. I think it would be a great book to give to a child-it has a gazillion things kids can do with herbs, and I think it would really open children's senses to the "secret life of plants" (another great book-recommended reading at the end of this one). A large part of the book explores 16 different herbs and in the process teaches the basics of herbalism from salves to tinctures to capsules and more! Everything described is very easy to do and effective as well (& fun! :) ) Other chapters explore kitchen herbs, flowers, gardens, and it is full of some great references as well. I have *tons* of books on herbalism now but this was the catalyst for my interest and will always be my personal favorite. This would be a great reference for a super cool science teacher as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love This Book!
WOW! I got this book for my kids, and they had to wrestle it away from me to get a peek! It is fun, clearly written and beautifully illustrated. It's a wonderful introduction to herbs for both kids and adults. Lots of recipes for tinctures, syrups, poultices, powders and more; along with lore and some really fun stories about the individual plants. I only wish we were a musical family so we could enjoy the songs! ... Read more

I bought my 1st copy 13 years ago when my girls were 1, 2.5,& 4. I went through 2 copies on them. In my opinion this book is the best sanity-saver for parents of multiple small children. The complete activity plans and varied themes make planning a snap and the children loved every one. I would often use just sections for a wet or cold day and when I was called last minute for Sunday School I could draw on this book knowing it would be a success. I am buying a 4th copy for a friend with 2yr old triplets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide for home preschooling.
I first checked this book out at the library. I found it to be invaluable. It is the perfect guide for parents who want to teach their kids preschool curriculum at home. It is full of subject ideas and very easy to follow. You don't have to be a skilled teacher to do it. I love it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for all children, but especially the learning disabled
This book does a very good job of explaining the different sensory systems, how they apply to learning for all children and how that differs for the disabilitis, and then how to create games and fun activities to facilitate learning/develop the skills learned through those senses. The suggestions are more directed toward autism but they are general enough to apply to all mental disabilities and normally progressing children. My only complaints are that it doesn't apply as well to children under 3 and it doesn't have as much information on speech development techniques as I was hoping for.I highly recommend it for all parents. (P.S. It is written in England English) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Even more creativity than the first book
This book includes many more exciting activities to play with your toddler. While my daughter does a lot of exciting activities at day care, it gives me an opportunity to have some creative time with her in the evenings and weekends. This book is wonderful in giving her uncreative mother a head start in coming up with ideas for her to do.

2-0 out of 5 stars This is really for babies, not toddlers
The first thing that should be noted about this book is that is really intended for babies, not toddlers. The games are for children from 12 to 24 months. I bought it for a 2 1/2 yr. old and he's pretty far beyond many of the suggested games. For a younger kid, it would be pretty good. All the games feature stuff that's laying around the house and they are very short games, which is great for kids with an attention span of about 2 seconds! I would recommend this book for anyone with a baby, but be forewarned there's a lot of gushy stuff in there like "sit back and watch your little cherub have fun!"

4-0 out of 5 stars Requires few "accessories" - good to keep on hand
This book mainly contains activities and games that don't require a lot of props. Or if a game requires a prop, the materials are usually already in the house. We loved the balance beam game and made our own out of a 2x4 laid across two books. Our toddler learned balance and increased her confidence.

I like the book categories - can easily find a "type" of game. I also like that the book is additionally sorted by age.

This definitely is not an arts and crafts book; if you're looking for a variety of artsy things to do with your child, this is not the book to buy.

But, I have plenty of those books and was happy to find a book that my husband could thumb through and pick an activity without having to make a shopping trip.

Also nice to leave out for babysitters or visiting relatives, to help them interact with the baby - and to help the baby get used to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference of fun, easy activities for toddlers.
This book includes all types of fun games and activities to do with young children. The suggestions are easy to do and don't require special equipment. She has conveniently categorized the games by age and type (e.g. outside games or car games), and at the bottom of the page is an explanation of what the toddler will learn. It's been a great reference and has given me new ideas of things to do with my son. ... Read more
