5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great information
It's almost overwhelming. There is no way you can spend this much time teaching everything, but it's nice to be able to pick and choose fun things to do with your baby. It's easy to use in a well thought out layout from birth on, divided by sensory perception.

5-0 out of 5 stars What do you do with a baby?
As a first time mom,of a child with special needs to boot, I had no idea. This book and the others in the series are great resources for finding things to do with your child other than watching Teletubbies for the thousandth time. If your child needs extra help in a certain area, like fine motor or listening skills, you can easily find a variety of exercises to help here. The later books in the series (Threes, Fours, and Fives) would also be a great resource for a homeschooling parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Active Learning for Infants
Not just for daycare! I am a first-time, stay-at-home mom and needed a way to tell if I was "doing all the right stuff" in regards to play, development, speech, music, etc. This book gives you exercises that are so easy for each stage of the first year of life. There is not a lot to read like a typical baby care book, but each section outlines what the child should be accomplishing and gives you exercises to ensure that your child reaches those development milestones. If you can look past the idea that it is written for daycare providers, you will find this book extremely helpful. I knew I was giving my child all he needed because I had these exercises to use as a handy guide. Good luck to you!

4-0 out of 5 stars wonderful ideas
I absolutly recommend this book for all providers working with infants. It is loaded with ideas and learning expeirences for babies. A must for providers and mothers who want to expand their child's learning!

5-0 out of 5 stars SAHM loves this series
I have every book in this series which goes from infant to age 5. Each book is laid out into sections for development of gross motor, small motor, imaginative play, language and number concepts. There are finer divisions within each section (eg. music, dramatic play). Each activity is on a 'card' that has the developmental stage of the child, how many can do it, how long it takes, the materials and also what to say to the children as they do it. It is easy to leaf through each section and see which activity you've got the materials for and you think your kids would enjoy doing.

The book is geared mostly for daycare centers, but is wonderful for SAHM (stay at home Moms (and Dads) too especially if you can combine the setup work with other Moms. Includes ideas on charting what you were planning to do with each child so you DO IT but you don't have to use them. They are not big on pushing children, but rather encouraging them to develop at their own pace with lots of opportunities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A quick help
This is a great book to be able to grab when you need an activity. One thing that I really enjoy about B. Sher's activities is that the are low prep. and you know that anything you find in her book will be of value to the children.

2-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment
Most activities in this book are only appropriate for very young children. I am a fan of Barbara Sher's other books so I bought this without browsing it first. Many of the '300' activities are chants with various words. For example: "we've all got a name, first and last, tell us your name and we will laugh". Another activity is to let the child smell food flavorings. Fun stuff if you're 3 but there isn't much for an 8 year old.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy to use
Wonderful book for parents, teachers, baby-sitters, etc. Gave the Hebrew edition (available in Israel) to a friend who enjoyed using it to entertain the children on a trans-atlantic flight. I highly reccomend this book and others by Barbara Sher, including "Extrodinary Games with Ordinary Things"

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy-to-read, very fun approach to the subject.
Like Barbara's other books, Self Esteem Games is a well-written, easy to read, fun guide to a serious subject. Is appropriate for parents and professionals alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONLY book you'll need!!
As a first time parent I bought *every* book out there that was labeled "interactive and "developmental" - I could've saved all my time and money had I just discovered "Wonderplay" first!

It is by far THE BEST book out there! It's ideas come from a Parenting Center in New York which is what sets this book apart from others - these authors know FIRST HAND that these ideas WORK!

The layout is great - starts with play with Children of All Ages, moves to Birth to Six Months, Six to Twelve Months, One-Year-Olds, Two-Year-Olds and lastly Three-Year-Olds. The ideas that they list are all age appropriate, quick, easy and inexpensive!

A MUST HAVE FOR FIRST TIME PARENTS!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful source for fun interaction for parent and child!
Wonderplay is a very useful and creative resource for parents. I am very impressed with the amount of crafts and games for the very young-- birth through two years of age. The book incorporates songs, games, play ideas, sing-a-longs,and crafts. The format is very easy to read, and it is also extremely easy if you want to find a quick activity or song if you have only one or two minutes to do so-- or as in my case many times-- a nursing or sleeping infant in my arms! I found it funny that it is sometimes hard to remember all the old nursery rhymes, fingerplays, and games of childhood. This book has some old favorites, plus many great new ones. We have been the type of parents who want to stimulate our son, yet not be too pushy. The Wonderplay book has been a great reference for us.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not really worth it
This book is just barely okay. There are only a couple ideas that even come close to being original. Also, there isn't much explanation of any suggestion. Skip buying the book and do some brain-storming. You will come up with everything in there.

1-0 out of 5 stars Really not that useful
We found this book more annoying than helpful. It includes the words for many songs, but not the music, so if you don't know the tune, you can't sing the songs. The recommendations for infants didn't include anything we hadn't thought of before.

We much preferred Baby Days.

1-0 out of 5 stars useless...
I bought this book because there were several glowing reviews of its content. The suggestions in this book are not creative at all!! I am not creative by nature, but I had thought of most of the ideas listed here. There are sections by age, but each section is small and you could do all of the items in one weekend. The songs and rhymes were the only thing of value in the book. Thumbs down! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Get our of your baby daze and get this book!
Baby Days is a record of the author's life with her daughter Anna during their first three years together. Barbara Rowley has made a career out of devising great ways to have fun with kids. The terrific thing about this book is that it's organized by type of activity and age. What harried parent hasn't thought, "oh sure, finger painting is wonderful, but what I really need is something to keep her busy while I'm cooking dinner." That's where Baby Days comes in. There are chapters for leisurely morning activities, meal and naptime ideas, and even sections on what to do in the car or on the plane. Each chapter's activities are also grouped by age, so it's easy to find something that will work for you and your child. Add to that the "prep time" and "messiness quotient" listings and you've got a recipe for success! Best of all, many of the activities only require a little energy and imagination or items usually found around the house. There's truly something here for everyone. This book inspired me to set up a reading nook (it's SO much more fun to read in a tent while lounging on pillows!) create a special hideaway and an activity box and put together a craft cupboard, among many other things, big and small. If those long days at home have got you down, it's time to get out of the baby daze and get this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars not worth the money
I bought this book based on the good reviews, but after reading it myself it's not worth the money. The activities she comes up with are too simple- fingerpaint or play ball. I thought of them on my own!! I was hoping for ideas that were not so obvious. She also has alot of ideas that use toothpicks?! not a toddler friendly item!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Looks good
Took this book out of the library first and was impressed. Now I have ideas what to do with my 15 month old son when we are home over the Xmas holidays. The messyness factor is a very good idea.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good ideas
If you are looking for some structured ideas, laid out completely, buy this book. I found a lot of great ideas in here. The only thing I don't really like is the author's semi-preachy style of writing. Ignore that and use this as a resource for some fun time with your toddler. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Theory PLUS Application
What I was looking for when I purchased this book was a compilation of reading theories. I found that...but as an added bonus I also found a step-by-step book outlining how to take a student from where they are to where they should be. This book is truly amazing in its approach. As a middle school teacher, I found it applicable to even 6th and 7th grade students. Wilbur's advice is respectful to children and free from worksheets and diagnostic tests. It get to the heart of reading--the interaction between the child and the text. Applying the strategies in this book has allowed me to change the futures of some of my students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rescued!
Peggy Wilber's book has helped rescue my son from his reading difficulties. Two months ago, Mrs. Wilber evaluated my son for reading difficulties and immediately got us started using the methods described in her book. He had endured one year of intensive phonics to no avail. Mrs. Wilber explains that in order to read well, children need to learn the phonics and also see the connected print. For a child with dramatic reading difficulties, she offers many suggestions to help them improve their skills. In the two months of using her system, his reading has improved one grade level. There is no holding him back now; he continues to improve and reads everything he can get his hands on.

The methods are research-based, well explained, easy to use, and effective. My son loves the auditory games and looks forward to our daily reading sessions. Before we started, he had been overheard saying "I hate reading." Within a month he had changed his tune to "Reading is fun! I love reading." I appreciate that the methods are easy for me to use at home and backed by much research. Most of all, I appreciate that they work.

Mrs. Wilber KNOWS children. She knows how their minds work, what they like, how they operate. She also knows parents--what they want, what they dislike, what they are willing to do. Those elements, combined with her vast knowledge of literacy, allow her to create an attractive and effective method for tutoring children and instilling in them a love for reading.

I highly recommend this book. Please read it a few times before implementing it in order to get the big picture and understand the whole process. You won't be disappointed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone!
For many children, this book will not have a long term benefit. Let me explain why. There are three main methods to teaching reading: whole language, aural and phonics. A good lesson plan includes all three of these. The reason so many children today cannot read is because most public schools are only teaching whole language. What these children need is lessons in phonics, which this book only includes at an introductory level.

If your child knows phonics then this book will be wonderful as it describes whole language training perfectly and also provides some help with the aural training. It would also make an excellent supplement to a phonics course.

However, if your child is reading the word "straight" as "starlight" or other similar mistakes, this book will be of no help. Find some phonics books and teach these to your children. Hooked on Phonics is so popular for a very good reason.

You must bear in mind that learning to read takes time. When reviewers rave that their child learned to read terribly fast, that's usually a bad sign. Whole language is so widely used because students pick up reading very quickly at the beginning levels. Unfortunately, they will not be able to go into intermediate and advanced level unless they go back to the beginning and learn their phonics.

In case it's of interest to you, I'm a student of education research and development.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Can't Believe How Well This Book is Working....
The first day we worked on the program outlined by this book, my son said, "I want to do this forever and never stop!" I almost passed out -- this is a kid who, though bright, has been struggling with reading and has a *very* low tolerance for frustration, and almost never lets me teach him anything. I am SO PLEASED with the results we have seen so far! It takes three approaches: auditory training, phonics, and using whole language. It's very smart, very usable, and quite effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is the help I have been searching for...
I love this book. I never write reviews, but I felt the need to write this one. This book is really good. I am a Mom who has a second grade son who is not reading at a level that I am comfortable with. Although, he is classified by the school as "average" or "slightly below average", he is still struggling with fluency and comprehension. Because he is average, he isn't getting the additional help that I know that he needs to be ready to enter third grade. This book has laid out the gameplan that I need to help my son succeed AND IT IS WORKING! This book is written to help kids at three different levels, so I am also using it to also help my very bright kindergartener learn to read at an even more effective and rapid rate. It is a lot of hard work for you and your child, but it is worth it. This book is definitely worth your time and money. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Concept - Falls Short
We have been using this book for about a month with our 7 & 9 year old. While the concept is great (short story presenting a problem then kids pick from 3 multi-choices after reading a scripture), I often find it frustrating for a couple reasons.

First the 3 choices are often 2 ridiculously obvious non-choices followed by the third obvious answer. Second the scriptures used are often either irrelevant or such a stretch fit to the situation presented as to be irrelevant.

It seems to me that the author had a great idea but got caught mass producing 365 situations. Hate to be a party-pooper, and happy that the book fits for some, but 'forewarned' for others who may find it like me. Strongly suggest a pre-read prior to purchasing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sricky Situations: 365 devotions for kids
One of the best devotions we ever purchased. It keeps the interest,is short and has real life situations. Book presents good choices to help make decisions in the real world. Just loved it. Good for 7-8 year old son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I would actually give this book a 4.45-very good & helps to bring the bible to real life by using it & applying it to realistic situations. A great way to get the family to talk about all types of issues that may come up in life

5-0 out of 5 stars great conversation starter
we keep this book on our kitchen table and each time we sit down for dinner, we read the days situation. the scenerios have prompted great discussions. our nine-year-old in particular loves this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic tool -- Biblical truth applied to daily situations
This book presents a relevant situation (in story form), gives a multiple-choice option for resolving the situation, then applies the Scripture to the situation.

Great tool for stimulating discussion with your children! It's concise, interesting, and relevant. My husband is a pastor and thinks this book is a jewel! Hope you'll enjoy it as much as we do. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
I'm 15 years old and I was born in '83. I grew up reading and listening to "Free to be You and Me." It's the greatest. It teaches children not to get locked into gender goals. Boys can cry. Girls can play with trucks. Your can teach your child to be free, like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Free to Be you and Me: A Book Every Child Should Have
In a society that spends so much time and energy telling all of us who we should be, what we should do, what to want, and what we need to be successful, it's incredibly liberating to have stories, songs, and poems telling us we are just fine the way we are. What's amazing is that the stories are engaging, charming, funny, and poignant. If all girls and boys were given this book, I think our world would look much different - and a lot healthier and happier. It might still be a dream, but one day I hope we really will live in a world where you and me are free to be you and me; in the meantime - we can at least read stories about it.

I am so grateful to have grown up on Free to Be You and Me.

4-0 out of 5 stars countering negative messages about gender expectations
.... It's a collection of songs, poems, and stories about being your own person and not having your options determined by gender. There are some great messages. ..... I did end up reading the book and hearing the music at a friend's house. I really like some of the pieces, and particularly "Parents Are People", about jobs mommies and daddies can have. However, having just reread the book and heard the CD as an adult, I can see why it put my mother off. Some of the pieces do heavily imply that there is a strong cultural pressure to conform to gender. While this is often true, some parents may choose not to harp on it. And, thank goodness, it's less true than it was when Marlo Thomas put the collection together, for which we can give Marlo her portion of the credit. :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Free To Be...You and Me
This book embodies the best teachings for kids in today's society. Kids need to feel OK about themselves and have that reinforced constantly so they grow up to be positive contributing members of our society. My brother and I loved it as kids ourselves. It's a terrific work and I hope it continues to last for ages to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia!
I am buying this book for my niece. I want her to be taught the lessons in this album at an early age. It's about not feeling bad about yourself, treating others with respect, good manners, and not falling into stereotypes but following your bliss, whether it's making a cake or building a tree house... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars They'll beg for your next "Family Night"!"
We had tried family devotionals before and our children's attention span barely made it through reading a few verses. We never had time to discuss and apply it to their level of understanding until we came across this series by Heritage Builders. Fun activities are interspersed that all relate to the message and have our kids requesting family nights time and time again. Instructions are given to help you adjust for various age levels. We started these when our kids were about 4 and 7 and usually set aside one night per month. Of course it would be even better to do weekly! Currently we are into the "Holiday" volume which is great too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical tool to teach Christian values
This book has made it fun for all of us to do "family nights" (devotions). In fact, the kids are always asking when we're doing it again! They look forward to it, and their enthusiasm makes our job - raising them with sound Biblical principles - that much easier. With this book at your disposal, you'll never have to struggle with family devotions again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Family devotions that we all look forward to!
Our three kids, 6,8,and 10, just love the fun activities from this book. Their teachers tell us to keep doing whatever it is because they go to school and tell everyone about it. My husband and I like the fact that we don't have to think up the great ideas, we just have to do them and have fun too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic tool for fun family devotions!
If you have been looking for a way to start family devotions, but did not know where to start, this is a must. The book outlines several inovative family night sessions for kids of all ages. You will not only have fun, but you will be able to clearly instruct your children to better know our Savior, Jesus Christ. ... Read more

Book Description

Based on the key Montessori principle that children learn best through active experience, Teach Me to Do It Myself presents simple activities through which children explore and develop their skills. These skill areas include sensory perceptions, body coordination, language, understanding of numbers, and movement. This practical, color-illustrated parenting book is filled with activities and instructions for overseeing children as they carry out a variety of learning activities. Most activities will seem simple to parents, because once mastered, adults perform them automatically. However, toddlers experience a sense of accomplishment and self-worth when they learn to perform them independently. The many activities start with dressing and personal hygiene, then go on to include . . .

  • Pouring activities
  • Threading and sewing activities
  • Peg activities
  • Cutting with scissors
  • Sorting activities by touch

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, and well written
This is a wonderful little guide, including not only the basics of 21 great things to do with children of various ages, but an important perspective on how to teach those things.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful and Fun for anyone who loves kids
Dr. Jeffrey Lee has two daughters who have been granted the benefit of his youthful interest in being, as he puts it, an "all-American boy". Dr. Lee's Chinese born father had no way of knowing how to, say, throw a baseball but in the face of his four sons' interests read up on the subject and gamefully worked his way through. Lee thought he'd have it easier the first time he set out to teach his daughter something and he made her cry. But she eventually learned and they had fun together, but that beginning wasn't terribly auspicious. And so Lee wrote this book, so that we wouldn't repeat his mistakes but rather could have fun from the start.

In this volume that Dr. Lee offers step by step and well-illustrated instructions on how to make and fly a kite, bake bread, catch a fish, build a fire, make a pie, juggle, skip a rock and more. He notes early on that one doesn't need to be an expert to be a good teacher, a comment designed to calm adult fears of not being "good enough". Each chapter includes a briefing on what to know before you start, what equipment/materia is needed, a section on troubleshooting and even some jokes or theme-related funny stories and trivia.

This is a wonderful book for any adult who wants to enjoy the company of a child while relearning and/or teaching these ever so critical "life skills". Your kids already think you know everything, why not have a little fun? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but not colorful enough
It's a good little book that can definitely help people who had no prior experience in baby handling. As a first time parent, I really appreciate the help!

Vicky Lansky offers a book that is organized by appropriateness for each quarter of baby's first year, and includes wide variety of play activities. Each sector of the book (0-3 mo., 3-6 mo., etc.) is preceded by the summary of developmental milestones.

However, in comparison to Baby Play (Gymboree) by Wendy S., Dr. Masi, Roni Cohen, Dr. Leiderman, this book lacks pictorial support. I have encountered a couple of activities that are not easy to follow just by reading the instructions. A simple picture or a photograph would eliminate this problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet & Simple
Tiny little book, broken up into birth to 3 months, 3-6 mo, 6-9 mo & 9-12 mo (95 pages) Quick and easy ideas for having fun with your little one.. this would make a nice gift for a baby sitter too! Sweet little book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let's Have some Fun!!
Here we have a book for the new parent(s), with a collection of games and activities to keep pace with your baby's changing abilities during the first year of life. The author provides a guide to play that will ultimately capture and hold (she says so) your baby's attention. There are traditional and contemporary suggestions suited to tailor-make your changing infant with helpful developmental information in 3 month increments, so you can track those milestones for the memory books.

There are games like bed bouncing (our girls' favorite) to playback, to puppet play and rattles. Then as you move on to airplane baby, clap hands, fancy feet, roll over, peek-a-boo, and all the other neat stuff, plus some really cute words to sleep by and lullabies, and others. A wealth of information for all of us. This author is the best!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for new parents
This book has loads of games that parents can use to play with their newborns. Some games are for use during certain practical activities such as a song you can sing while bathing your baby, and pointing out the different parts of the body. There are also games for simply passing the time. Parents usually have time to spend with their young ones and it might as well be entertaining for all! I buy this book for every expecting parent I know! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's lifetime of Memories
This book is a must have for everyone. I received it as a Christmas present in 99' and I've been writing in it ever since. I'm only in my early twenties and as I get older I want to have something to remember my past. I hope that my kids and the rest of family will be able to read this and see the joy that I've had in my lifetime. This is the perfect expression of a lifetime of fond memories captured in a single book.

4-0 out of 5 stars An opportunity to know my father before it was too late
I bought the book Once Upon a Lifetime for my father last Christmas. He balked at the idea of filling out a bunch of questions about his life. I hounded him to do it for a few months. He said he'd done the first page in January, and the second page in February, but was having a hard time getting into it. He isn't one to talk about himself or his life, but I knew he'd had a very adventurous and challenging life, and I had always wanted to know more about it. He'd never shown us any photo albums, has no family, and wanted to "leave the past behind". I stopped bugging him about the book by March. He died in July in his home of a sudden heart attack. He was 81 years old. As my sister and I were going through his things, on his desk, under a big pile of books and papers was the book of questions Once Upon a Lifetime. I noticed that he had not only filled in the first two pages, but every page of the book. He had answered all 1001 questions. If not with an answer, at least an "N/A". I told the story of the book at his memorial service and quoted from it. People told me how moving it was to hear about his life, and have quotes from the book. I've had at least 15 people ask me where to get a copy of the book so they can give it to their parents. ... Read more

As a clinical psychologist and parent of a 6 year old son, I would recommend this book highly to fellow parents, or professionals. It helped me get a fresh perspective on some common behavior problems (like getting kids dressed & out in the morning!) and provided many creative, fun, and positive solutions. It's quite liberating to turn occasions for nagging into games that foster independence and achievement. The book provides many specific ideas, charts and coupons that can be copied and used. I even gave my son's first grade teacher a copy of the book as a gift. She used several of the ideas with great success!

5-0 out of 5 stars review
As a practicing clinical psychologist and parent of a 6 year old son, I would recommend this book highly. Even with previous training in the field, the book helped me gain a fresh, creative, and positive perspective on common everyday behavior problems. I even gave a copy to my son's teacher, who implemented several of the ideas with great success. It was a really great gift. The ideas in the book are specific (charts and reward coupons included!!), effective and fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helping Parents: A Psychologist's View
(...) Dr. Virginia Shiller has addressed the dilemna of adapting effective behavioral techniques to the "wonderful idiosyncratic nature of human beings and the ways that they interact with their environments." Her method is to teach parents how to enter into dialogues with their children so that the Reward Plans they develop are customized to their own families and so that both kids and parents are motivated to give them a try. Instead of simply giving the adults rules to follow, she provides explanations of the underlying principles so that the parents themselves can learn how to address common behavioral problems in a caring and creative manner. Specific examples are given of such common battlegrounds as struggles over bedtimes, picking on siblings, and homework. She describes how to use humor and creativity in order to enlist the cooperation of the children, so that they can become able to experience the rewards of self-control. I liked the emphasis on empowering rather than controlling. In addition, there are lots of cute charts, games, and tokens that are fun to use with kids.

I especially liked Dr. Shiller's discussion of the differences between bribes and rewards. I have already used that in talking with parents. (Though this book is written so that it can be used by the average parent, there is something in it for experienced clnicians, too.) While Dr. Shiller explains the principles in a manner which could instruct a psychology student, she also includes a level of subtlety which is interestting to people who have been doing this for a while. This is a useful and excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Pull Out Charts and Advice from Experts!
This is an amazing book! The pull out charts and awards are a unique addition to the parenting advice in the book. Having the chance to hear Dr. Shiller and her co-creator Janet'OFlynn speak was a treat. These ladies really know what they are talking about.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lifesaver for a Frustrated Parent
This book came out a just the right moment for me. I had been having terrible difficulty with my older daughter Maya's bedtime, which was making my life miserable. I heard about this book and how it can help frustrated parents like myself and decided to give it a try. The book is very nicely presented and easy to read, and above all else, extremely practical. The author gives examples of typical problems faced by parents and offers sample "plans" for how to deal with them. For really busy people like myself there are pullout charts and other materials that are ready-to-use. I found one example that was very similar to my situation and used the information provided to develop a plan to get my daughter into bed at a reasonable hour. I couldn't believe how well it worked! I've already picked out the next behavior problem we're going to work on. I highly recommend this book to parents who are looking for a positive, common-sense approach to dealing with their kids' difficult behaviors. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, Yet Nice
This is a simple compilation of toddler or children's activities, presented by Fred Rogers, of television's Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. Most of the activities can be done using things you really can find around your house; not expensive craft supplies that you have to go out and buy. I wasn't so much impressed with the originality of the ideas; however, the organization and simplicity with which the ideas are presented is superb. There are sections on sharing/caring, pretend play, helping, things that go, feelings, creative fun, nature and science. Each activity page includes a list of things you'll need, steps for setting up and participating in the activity and what your child is working on developmentally by doing the activity; extra tips are included on many pages, as well. A helpful list of household things to save (instead of throwing out) for use in play activities is also included in the back of the book. This is a great book, and although we've only tried a few of the many activities so far, my kids and I really like this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars When reading the book, be prepared to follow its suggestions
This book was very enlightening for my husband and I. We used these methods for both of our children. Both of them are in the gifted program at school and have been playing violin since 2 1/2. My son is in 6th grade making straight A's and my daughter is in 4th grade doing the same thing. They are also very active in sports activities. This book was the starting point of tapping into their potential at a very young age. The methods set forth in this book are not just meant as suggestions, but they actually work! We are very happy to have found this book, and are reaping its benefits already.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is only the beginning!
My parents did Glenn Doman's entire program -- reading, math, physical and encyclopedic knowledge as well as Suzuki violin -- with me, my younger sister and brothers. It had such a profound impact on our lives. We all have retained the love of learning into adulthood, and NEVER felt pressured as children. If you want to give your children the greatest gift ever (after the gift of life) then please read all of Glenn Doman's books! This book is meant to be an introduction -- you will find the program easier if you read every book in the series. Have a wonderful time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible results
My wife used this book religiously since our son was 1. Now he is a 4 3/4 yr old preschooler who has been reading basically since he could talk. His preschool teacher gives him assignments in a 4th grade math book, but they are too easy for him. He totally understands math, fractions, cubes, and square roots. His biggest challenge is writing his equations, as his writing level is at about grade level. He's also a wonderful, caring, well adjusted, and sweet little guy.

2-0 out of 5 stars 194 pages of drivel before any instructions.
I was pretty disappointed with this book. It was recommend by a co-worker, so I bought it. There are 194 pages of anecdotes about why its a good idea to use the exercises in the book before one gets to the first exercise. This sort of thing is usually covered in the introduction, or maybe the first chapter, but not the first 15! Does anyone really need that much convincing *after* buying the book?

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth reading
I will probably follow the advice on teaching math. He makes some very compelling points about the value of using dots vs. traditional symbols for numbers. It makes sense to me that early training of this type could enhance math ability. The general philosophy is also logical and appealing - babies are programmed to learn. This is what they want and what they enjoy. I look forward to fulfilling this need, encouraging curiosity, and instilling a love of learning.

But...I can't imagine that *ANY* parent's time is best spent preparing some of the materials described. It seems utterly ridiculous to me. After all, children learn more from watching what you do than from listening to what you say, and I don't think an obsessive parent who spends half their time making flash cards is the best role model. Better to be a good example of a fulfilled person with adult interests. ... Read more
