4-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational
I was hoping for a book like "How to Dad" which has pictures and instructions on how to do cool stuff, like skip rocks and teach how to ride a bike. This is more like those inspirational books like life's instruction book. Great read, some wonderful ideas, but not the sort of hands on activity book I thought it was going to be. I guess I was thinking of the 365 ways to cook chicken books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will take you back...
This is a short book of ideas on what you can do with your son to build his character and yours as a father. Not only will it make you think about how to raise a child, it will take you back to your childhood memories spent with your father.

I don't have a son today but hope to adopt soon. It's a great book for anyone who is a father or nervous about becoming one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a WELL-ORGANIZED idea book!
Just as a I said: Finally, a well-organized idea book! I can look up activities to carry out in my classroom by category (Bath and Dressing Games, Going to Sleep Games, etc.); by age (0-3, 3-6, 6-9, and 9-12 months); AND by theme (just for fun, colors, etc.). The activities are simple and clearly described in one page each. But they are not all commonsense ideas, or I wouldn't like this book, and neither would any other experienced under-threes teacher :p. I HIGHLY recommend this book to under-threes teachers and to new parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.
I was shocked to see that someone gave this book 1 star- this book is excellent. It is well organized with games grouped in sequence from age 0-3 months upto 9-12 months. There are about 20 games for each age group. Each page has a different game, an easy to understand description, and tells you exactly what skill(s) it will help develop. I found this book creative and insightful, and had ideas I wouldn't have thought of on my own. I am putting this on my wish list for when I have kids of my own.

1-0 out of 5 stars Complete Waste of Money
I bought this book thinking that it would provide me with great ideas for activities to play with my baby and after reading it, I quickly returned it. I would have rated it zero stars but that was not an option. The book is filled with unimaginative "games" to play with babies (e.g., sing a lullaby to your infant at bedtime). If you have a little bit of creativity or imagination you can come up with better activities than the ones mentioned in this book. Don't waste your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Games to Play With Babies
Finally, a book for new or "experienced" parents with no, little, or high imaginations! Being a parent is the most importaant job anyone can have, and this book helps make it even more rewarding! I discovered this hidden treasure while browsing through Amazon's book selections, and I thought that it may make a wonderful addition to my parenting book collection. It is completely interactive. The parent is blessed with a huge selection of quick and educationally profitable activities for newborns to one year-olds. Songs, finger games, poems, daily bedtime or bathtime rituals and other activities are demonstrated and what benefit it gives you child is written at the bottom of the page: language skills, balance, and bonding just to name a few. A must-have for parents of infants! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My success story: Thank you, daddy!
I don't remember ever not knowing how to read.

This is because when I was just a year old, my dad bought a copy of this book. After reading it, he wrote words in big red block print on solid, kid-proof pieces of white cardboard. And I *flew* with it. I got out of this book what my dad put into it, and then some.

I remember how much fun I had. When he came home from work, I'd beg him to pull out the flashcards: "Get the words, daddy!"

A couple years later, when my sister was 2 and I was 4, *I* taught *her* to read. She didn't initially take to it as well as I did, but I made it a game: I'd hide the flash cards around the house and send her off in search of the right words. She loved it! So if at first you don't succeed, you can modify the system to suit your baby.

At about the same time, I entered kindergarten. I remember wondering why they made such a big deal about my ability to read. After all, as surprising as it was to them, it was nothing unusual to *me*!

Flash forward 20 years. Where am I in 1999? I'm a very successful graduate student in Boston. Merit scholarships have taken me right through college. I worked hard to get here, and I know my dad started me on the right foot.

Did I benefit from this book? Yes. When I have children, will I teach them by this system? Absolutely. This is the kind of gift keeps on giving. Your child will cherish it for years to come.

2-0 out of 5 stars There are better ways to accomplish the same thing
I read this book before my first child was born. She is now 5 years old. I did do some of the reading cards and also some cards from other books by Doman. What I have found, both from personal experience and from watching people in an internet club complain about the same thing over and over is that this bores babies. It is also practically impossible to keep up with for almost any mother, particularly one with more than one child. Kids love the cards for a few days, and then they just don't see why you're making such a big deal out of some red words on cardboard.

A parent could spend thousands of dollars and hours making or buying the materials to teach your child to read or do math or other things the Doman way. Or you can teach your child phonics using a good, straightforward phonics program like the one in Alpha-Phonics by Sam Blumfield - ...

My daughter (and son, age 3) are very smart. My daughter reads fluently and can do second-grade math. She loves books and wants to learn everything. I credit this mostly to reading her ordinary books, not specially designed cards shown in a precise way. Teaching her phonics opened up the world of reading to her. It was simple, unstressful and wonderful...she started to read at age 3.5yrs.

Don't waste your time and energy on Doman. He has some good ideas about the possibilities and will help you gain respect for what children CAN learn, but don't follow this neurotic program. Do a search on the web and find discussions about Doman's methods and you will see that people struggle with this more than they praise it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Glenn Doman Helped My Child To Read At Age 2
I read one review from a mother who said not to waste your money on Dr. Doman's books. I beg to disagree. My daughter, who is now 20, started to read when she was 2 and I credit this to Dr. Doman. The system not only teaches children how to read, it also helps in the bonding between the parent and the child. People tend to get impatient with the system, but it works. There was a time when I doubted the effectiveness of the program that I almost gave up. When my daughter finished the course, she read the "Little Tommy" book (which is part of the reading progam)in its entirety. Even at that point, I couldn't believe that she could truly "read". I dismissed it as "word recognition". However, few weeks later, my daughter happened to pick up a Newsweek magazine and started to read off it. My jaw dropped to the floor! I couldn't believe it! And Newsweek is no nursery rhyme material. To this very day, my daughter has an insatiable appetite for reading. It has helped her through school. In a year, she'll be graduating from UCLA. Thank you, Dr. Doman.

5-0 out of 5 stars IT WORKS!!!
I started this method with my daughter when she was around 15 months old. By the time she was 22 months old, she read her first book. She never stopped reading after that and she did so because she liked it. By the time she was ready for the first grade, her school wanted to push her into the third grade. We didn't think that was a good idea socially for her. My daughter has enjoyed a rich academic experience to this day becasue of this simple, fun approach to reading at an early age. She is now a Freshman on scholorship at The University of Penn.

5-0 out of 5 stars 100,000 plus Mothers can't be wrong!
Glenn Doman should be ranked as one of the greatest educators of the 20th (and 21st) Century. His name should be known to every parent in the United States and beyond. Unfortunately, relatively few have heard of him. He is one of America's best kept secrets. What this man and his colleagues have done is to reveal the amazing learning potential of very young children and to provide the guidelines by which parents, primarily mothers, can harvest that potential. He has proven that infants and young children are capable of absolutely amazing learning achievements long before they begin kindergarten. In fact, by the time most children begin kindergarten, they have lost much of their learning capacity. Babies accomplish a fantastic learning feat within their first few years simply by learning to speak and use their native spoken language. They learn the language pretty much by osmosis, not by anyone's effort to teach it to them. Glenn Doman, through his very sccessful efforts to help brain injured children get well, learned that children can and should learn to read and to do math at the same time they are learning to speak their native language. Infants and toddlers can learn more and learn it more easily and faster at that young and tender age than in any other stage in their lives. All they need is someone to use the right strategies and techniques to bring such learning about. The right strategies and techniques are not at all difficult. The time required to do it is very short. The best person to do it is the child's mother, according to Doman, but Dad or other loving and dedicated adults can do it with equal effectiveness. The results are amazing, fun, and enormously beneficial to the child. Children who are taught to read (as well as to do math and a lot of other things) by the Doman methods are generally happier, better adjusted, more intelligent, loving, constructive, and successful, etc. than children who do not have the benefits of Doman's learning program. A lot of uninformed critics have imagined faults with Doman's methods. Some claim, for example, that teaching children to read by "sight methods" is not a proper way to teach children to read. The truth is, of course, that sight (and sound) methods are the only methods that can be used to teach infants and toddlers to read (and do math) and tens of thousands of parents and their children can testify to the effectiveness and success of those methods. The truth is that there are no "dangerous side effects" of teaching very young children to read. Many of these children appear to be geniuses to people who are amazed at what they can do. The answer to that is that geniuses are made, not born. Every child is born with the potential to be a "genius" if only someone will give them the chance. What is really sad is the fact that there are closed minded parents who, out of fear or ignorance, or whatever, will not even bother to look at the evidence provided by Doman and his happy followers. Everyone has heard the saying that when opportunity knocks, it makes good sense to open the door. But some people lock the door tightly shut instead. They and their children suffer a great loss as a result. The wonderful things that could have happened through their participation in the "gentle revolution" never take place. They end up learning to read the hard way, or not at all. It is a well known fact that we have a very large number of people in this country and around the world who never master the art of reading. Glenn Doman has provided parents with the opportunity to teach their own children to read the easy way. He has shown that waiting until the child starts to school to allow strangers to take on the task of teaching their children to read (and do math, etc.) is to wait until the vast and amazing early childhood learning advantage has already been lost. Aside from the Bible, I think that "How To Teach Your Baby to Read" is in fact one of the most important, and potentially beneficial books that has ever been written. Parents of young children can be a part of the "gentle revolution" by reading this book with an open mind and then giving their children the great gift that this book gives them the power to give. What a difference you can make in your child's life. Too few people have heard of Glenn Doman and the "gentle revolution." Read the book, spread the word, spread the revolution. And don't forget to read "How to Teach Your Baby Math" as well. Not only will your children, grandchildren, friends, etc. benefit from your efforts to spread the word, but so will your country. I sure wish that I had known about Glenn Doman and his "gentle revolution" when my own children were young enough to benefit from from it. Only very recently did my brother tell me about Doman. Now I am spreading the word. I hope many others will do the same. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book... great philosophy behind it
I first thought that this book might be another collection of activities and would be limited to the "playgroup crowd." As a working parent whose child was in daycare from very early, we don't participate in playgroups. However, I quickly found out that this was not JUST another listing of activities nor was it limited to playgroups. I found the activities to be stimulating and fun for BOTH me and my son (and he's now 5½)... a great way for a working parent who wants to relax some on weekends and evenings to have fun with her child. The book definitely lives up to helping parents live Mommy & Me's philosphy: "Living, laughing and learning... Together." I'm getting the book for all of my friends with kids under 5, and those who are expecting!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I had this book when my son was younger!
I was a little skeptical when I first got Fun with Mommy and Me, thinking it might turn out to be yet another activity book. However, both the design of the book and the philosophy behind it drew me in. As a working parent whose child has always been in daycare, we don't get to participate in playgroups (tried Gymboree and just didn't like it). However, I've always been on the lookout for activities to do with my son on weekends and evenings. This book gave me a wealth of ideas that would be stimulating and fun for BOTH of us! The ideas presented in the book live up to the slogan of "Living, laughing and learning... together." I'm getting this book for all my friends who are expecting and those who have kids under 5... it's a keeper!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for all moms!... A Must Have!!
I am a single working mom and this book has been a lifesaver! It is down to earth, easy to read and understand and gives so much information and little tips to the side of pages. I don't get enough time to read in depth so this is wonderful. I love the way the author wrote in the words to childrens songs...I always forget a line or so. This will become a very important part of our play time together. I liked it so much I bought 3 more for cousins that are expecting and have young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific!
This is a terrific book and used for lots of things not just favorite activities. Put it on your shopping list for Christmas and it makes a great shower gift as well. I got it for a shower gift along with Mommy-CEO, revised edition, by Jodie Lynn, and have enjoyed them both so much! These are two must have books for all moms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dynamite!
The authors have written a book that one can read with one hand while changing a diaper with the other. This is not rocket science--you can make sense of it quickly and easily, and that's essential when you have a toddler in the house! Get it. Read it. And get on the Mommy & Me track. In a year where everything has gotten exceedingly more difficult, thanks for making my life easier. A grateful Aunt--who needs all the help she can get! ... Read more

The expertise of the author is revealed in this volume packed with ideas for readying your child for kindergarten. The ideas are simple, fun, and speak to the whole child. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book!!! Highly recommend it!
I bought the Disney FamilyFun Craft book and enjoyed it so Itried this one. It is EXTREMELY impressive!! I am known for throwinglavish, creative (casual) parties, and this book is a treasure!! If you have parties for children, it's a must-have. The Cinderella party is worth buying the book for itself, with ideas of a handsome duke delivering invitations to a ball, girls losing their slippers, and more! I thought this book was so great, that I came in to the computer just to recommend it in a review. It provides GREAT ideas for every aspect of the party, all inexpensively, and age-appropriate. It is a GREAT gift idea for moms with young children, but the ideas are very applicable to adult parties too. I will definitely do lots of these parties when my family gets together. Adults and children will enjoy these festive ideas. What a blast!

Full of colourful photos, I always end up referring back to this book while planning events, as the ideas are so fresh and creative and very manageable. This is definatley a book worth owning!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I use this book for every birthday party I throw. I take their ideas and adapt them to fit my parties. So far all my parties have been a huge success and are often referred to as the parties you don't want to miss!

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative!!
What a fun and original book!
The ideas are great and it was not at all what I expected by the title. There are really creative and original ideas for everyday celebration and fun. This book is really creative and you can branch off to your own ideas. You will use this book often so keep it close at hand! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book packed with wonderful party ideas!
When I first saw this book in a store, I was very impressed. The ideas are original and fun and the accompanying pictures really help spark the imagination. I am sure I will be using this book often. What I appreciated most was the "everyday" party themes, i.e. "rainy day." Every day is worthy of a celebration and this wonderful book will help. ... Book Description

Has science shoved parents out of the nursery? Judging from the steady stream of headlines, one would think biologists have discovered a gene for every aspect of behavior. Now, Winifred Conkling reassures us that there's still room to help our children reach their personal best. In clear, compassionate language, Conkling tells parents how to make practical use of the latest research on early brain development, offering invaluable advice on how to:

    • Create a nurturing environment in which you child can grow cognitively
    • Encourage movement and motor development
    • Stimulate speech and language development
    • Foster a child's emotional health and personal identity
    • Make toy and food choices appropriate to each stage of development

With specific, sound advice; readable charts and timetables; and clear, easy-to-understand language, Winifred Conkling translates the latest scientific discoveries into useful ways to help your child live up to his or her fullest potential. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!
I had such high hopes for this book, but found myself sorely disappointed. Yes, it's a quick read (as one of the other reviews noted) -- that's because there's hardly any information in it! It basically offers the information one could find in just about any issue of just about any mainstream baby or parenting magazine: that children's intelligence is a combination of nature and nurture and that to maximize your child's brain development you should offer them a loving, stimulating environment. ... I find it difficult to imagine that any parent motivated enough to buy this book doesn't already know all that. There seemed to be very little practical advice (certainly almost nothing beyond what one could glean from common sense and a cursory reading of a few elementary magazine articles).

In short, spend your money on something else. Maybe a book to read with your baby...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for all new parents
This book is terrific! A very quick read (especially important for new parents!) and full of very valuable information. This book is great because of the clear cut advice and practical, specific suggestions for enriching your child's early development.

Many of the suggestions are simple and easy to do, but will make a big difference in the lives of your children. Written with a respect for children that is often lacking in the way people tend to treat young children. This book is not about pushing your child to get perfect test scores. It shows how raise a child that is happy and secure who will want to pursue knowledge and creativity on their own.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Starter Book
This book is a quick read and wonderful for getting started on learning how to help your child develop into the best person they can be.

This book deals with the first three years of your child's life. It gives you ideas from playing with your children to sending your child to music classes. It breaks down the types of learning and how best to incorporate all into your child's daily activity. It also helps to break down the activities that are best for you child at certain ages.

I definitely suggest this book for parents beginning guide to the development of a child's learning processes.

This is also a great book for the parent who says they do not have enough time to read anything regarding their new baby. It is a quick read and very educational. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Laid out but some good exercises
Most of the exercises are good and one usually comes to them naturally. It's a good reference to get a base set of things to do with your child. The only problem is it's poorly laid out meaning some of the sets are birth - 3 months with another set being birth to 6 months. Why not have them birth, 3 months, 6 months etc. The pictures are somewhat useless as well in that they show a guy and a child smiling. Diagrams with how the exercises should be performed might be a bit better.

My husband is going to be a first time Dad this September.
For Father's day I chose this book as a little guide for him to enjoy.I know he is going to be a fantastic Father but wanted to give him some fun games to enjoy with the baby.I love the way the book explains all the exercises incorporating the whole sporting theme. The pictures are also fantastic.I just know my husband is going to gain so much from this book in turn enjoying his time with our child.I am pleased I chose this book for his first.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must buy
If you are looking for a book with tons of fun games and excercises to do with your infant, this is the book. I swear by it. We were trying to help my daughter crawl and I found an excercise/game in the book that had her crawling in days!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not just for Dads
Using the sports theme, the author presents dozens of games to play with your baby to build their physical and mental development, as well as to promote bonding. My husband and I found that we just "naturally" did some of the games suggested before we even had the book, but it offers a wide variety of things to choose from and gives and interesting background on what benefits the activity offers.

This is a great book for a new dad OR mom and offers games from birth until about 2 years old. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars very dissapointing
i am a card-carrying girlfiend ... loved iovine's previous books (i have all the guides from pregnancy to getting your grrove back and LOVE them all!). i really wanted to love this book.

instead, it was a huge dissapointment. it had none of the chatty, witty dialougue or cute anecdotes that made iovine's earlier books fun to read, and so different from every other parenting book.

this book read like a very tedious magazine article. the author occasionally tried to sprinkle in some vicki-like humor or language but it was sporatic, awkward and always fell painfully short. and as far as the content -- even the slightly experienced mom will find the ideas redundant.

4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of help!
As a person who enjoys cooking and entertaining at the drop of a hat, when it came time to throw a birthday party for a 3-year-old, I was clueless. I bought this book in anticipation of my daughter's 3rd birthday party. I followed the directions to the T and the party went off without a hitch. I have since used it to plan activities for playdates and for gift ideas for other kids' birthday parties. No, Vicki didn't write this all by herself, but hey, she's got a lot going on in her life with 4 kids, etc. I still found the information to be enlightening and helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment to Girlfriends
How disappointing to discover that this Girlfriend's Guide isn't written by Vicki Iovine (her name is on the book, with another author, but it just doesn't sound like her). This volume reads more like a tedious magazine article, replacing those terrific anecdotes with reminders about choking hazards. The party ideas are presented in fairly bland description, and were not really very creative. The playdate information was covered better in other volumes. The gift-giving section was poorly though out (this is supposed to be for moms as they relate to their kids' friends, but extravagant, "grandparent" items were listed (instead of general guidelines about choosing how much to spend). Many of the ideas for play with children just sounded like lists in a magazine article. Most of the things I loved about the other Girlfriend's Guide books are absent from this volume--it just doesn't ring true. It does, however, have enough decent information to warrant a glance--but it could've been in any parenting magazine. The book just lacks the magical quality that made the other books such treasures to moms.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Written By Iovine
Having loved Iovine's previous books, I felt betrayed to learn early in the book that Iovine was not the primary author of "her" book. Although the content is helpful, it does read like someone trying to write like Iovine which I found distracting. Also, I couldn't help feeling like girlfriends don't false advertise to other girlfriends--just couldn't get past that. Fine if Iovine wants to support the primary author, but apparently she is now just a brand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute book
This is a cute book with all the typical Iovine humor. Alot of cute stories about her own personal experiences, and those of her friends. Some cute suggestions too, about parties and toys! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars not what I expected
There wasn't as much in this book as I was hoping for. The games that are suggested are mainly things I would do with my baby anyway. I guess I was hoping for a little more creativity and insight about development. Also, some of the games did not seem safe to me. One game suggests putting down a wooden ladder for a toddler to walk through like an obstacle course and sitting at the other end to encourage him/her to walk through. That just sounded like a trip hazard with a parent too far away to catch.

5-0 out of 5 stars So many ideas for a clueless mother!
I absolutely adore this book and highly recommend it to parents everywhere. I think of myself as a fairly creative person but got tired of the same old games that I knew from my childhood. This book gives wonderful ideas and separates them into age appropriate groups - a must for me since I have a 10 month and 27 month old! The ideas are also simple and does not take many or any materials to do, which is great for those on a limited budget. I suggest you get this book if you like spending time with your baby/toddler and teaching them without them knowing it! Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas for Activities to Do With Baby
This book gave me tons of ideas for things to do with my baby. I was nervous about being a first-time-dad. Not knowing how to handle a baby or how to play with a baby was wearing on my nerves. Penny's book helped calm me down, and now I'm totally comfortable playing with my son.

    Book Description

    What's a palooza?

An activity that keeps kids from uttering those terrifying words, "I'm bored!"

You may know John Lithgow as star of stage, screen, and television or even as a bestselling children's book author. But his most important role -- parent -- was also the most fun. Whether building cardboard castles or putting on a King and I puppet show or conducting a treasure hunt in the National Gallery of Art, John has spent years perfecting the art of the palooza.

A palooza is easy to do!

    • A palooza doesn't cost much (some cost absolutely nothing)

    • A palooza is instigated or organized by parents but is quickly taken over by children

    • A palooza may involve a computer but never the TV

    • A palooza may use all varieties of arts and crafts

    • A palooza may secretly teach children (and parents!) a thing or two

    • A palooza is entertaining for the entire family

    • A palooza depends entirely on the inexhaustible creativity, ingenuity, imagination, and sense of fun of young minds

This book contains 101 ideas for creating paloozas for children ages 3 to 12 wherever you are. Grouped according to interests and themes -- like art, drama, music, vacations, and birthdays -- and incorporating lots of extrapaloozas, fun facts for parent and child, and suggested additional reading for all ages, John's paloozas range from adopting your own soup can for a day to inventing your own secret language to establishing left-handed day or creating a self-portrait. A Lithgow Palooza! is an utterly unique collection of original activities guaranteed to transform any household from bored to bubbling with fun. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars is not enough!
Creative, innovative, superlative, outstanding. I just received my copy today and have read through one half of the book so far, but am very impressed. Every new parent should be given this book at baby showers. Lightow writes in an understandable, friendly conversation manner which is easy to understand.

As a left hander in my middle years who has struggled with the challenges and redicule of being "different", I especially appreciated the chapter relating to lefties. Creaping/galloping degeneration in usefulness of my left hand is forcing me to become ambidextrous in performing the simplest daily activities.

Thanks to a very literate and intelligent person for this great resource for parents.

My advise: Throw away the coloring books and remote controls and, buy this book.

Thanks to you Mr. Lightow for this enlighting and entertainig book. By the way, we loved Third Rock also.

5-0 out of 5 stars a delightful surprise
I'm a grade school teacher and I picked up this book looking (as ever) for a few new ideas for activities for my students. I hit the mother lode. This is as creative and refreshing a presentation of activities for kids that I have ever come across. These activities show a tremendous respect for the inherent creativity in children and prove that if you give them the time and inspire them with smart ideas, they'll create. And learn.

For example, "Bibliomancy" is a whimsical little "fortune-telling" game that asks the child to randomly choose a word from the dictionary to answer his own question about the future. So he has to read and understand the word, and then use some mighty creative logic to prove how the word points to his optimum outcome. "Color Concentration" adapts the classic memory game by using paint chips from the hardware store. So at once, kids are playing a familiar and fun memory game, becoming aware of the nuance of color, and reading those evocative paint color names. I loved "Museum Hunt," which gives adults a great way to thoroughly involve a child in the museum experience-or even replicate the experience from your own home using online art resources. And I will absolutely do "Palio" with my class next year, when they'll invent their own adaptation of the wild horserace that takes place in Siena, Italy every summer.

For the most part, the activities, or "paloozas," just require the adult to set it up and let the kids have at it. This book is a terrific resource for getting kids genuinely engaged in their own creative possibilities. It is also, by the way, a wonderfully enjoyable read for grownups, who are tossed rich and tasty tidbits on art and literature and culture that remind them of why they want to expose their kids to this stuff in the first place. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Quality Family Time
I received this book as a gift from a teacher girlfriend. At first I was overwhelmed-it's a big book. My friend told me to trust her, pick a page (any page), gather my kids and start. I am glad I did.

I started with an interview titled "All the Senses". As an introduction, my 5 and 7 year olds and I talked about what our senses were. Then I interviewed them, writing down both of their answers to questions about their favorites smells, sounds, sensations, the same book. The kids liked having this "talking time" with me. After a few minutes, my husband, overhearing us, stopped doing the dishes and joined us so he could listen too.

In our family, the temptation is to just get things done in the evening. This book helps my husband and me spend just 10 or 20 precious minutes really talking and communicating with the kids. It's easy. It's fun and together we're creating a keepsake treasure. I recommend it to parents everywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Showcases nature studies and appreciation activities
Joseph Cornell is the author of Sharing Nature With Children and Sharing Nature With Children II . This two volume set showcase nature studies and appreciation activities that any parent, teacher, or child care provider can readily engage in with children. Ann appreciation for the complex and interrelated life forms that comprise the exosphere of their environments is a solid basis to establish a life-long enthusiasm for nature and the out-of-doors, as well as a lasting commitment to environmental issues and concerns. Each volume is available independently, but school and community libraries are urged to acquire them both for the nature activities and environmental reference collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cornell's book for children
I had no idea that Joseph Cornell had written a book for children. This is a rare find. (It ranks up there with Robert Walser's little-known treatise on horse-grooming, or Arthur Brand's book of stock quotes.) There are stories here of hope and joy. You really get a sense of Cornell's engagement with a visionary romanticism when he encourages the reader to "let the child see into the world of nature, for there they will find a balm for their sorrows, a calm for their heart, and a palm against time." Cornell filled his boxes with the doodads of youth, and it's wonderful to find him speaking to children without any form of mediation. A must.

4-0 out of 5 stars Old activities
I have worked in outdoor environmental education, so many of the activities suggested in this book were known to me prior to reading it. Therefore, I was a little disappointed in the book b/c I had hoped to get fresh ideas. I would reccommend this book to any and all parents/teachers who have not worked in EE. These activities are the standard in teaching kids/adults about nature. I look forward to reading Sharing Nature with Children II, which I have also purchased. I feel it will have new activities to inspire me and many others who love nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nature study made easy!
Thanks to this book, I have embarked on a new career in environmental education. I always dreamed about it but never realized that I could do it until I was introduced to this book. It is a must have for anyone who works with kids: teachers, parents, youth leaders, babysitters, etc. This book was so instrumental to me, that I gave a copy of it to two of my professors who were most influential in making my first year back in college to persue this new career a success. I know it has had an impact on one of these professors! Even after being introduced to some of the major environmental education programs (i.e.: Project Wild, etc) I still return to this simple book again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clasic guide to outdoor education games for children

5-0 out of 5 stars Must reading for every parent, grandparent and teacher.
Wouldn't it be great if we could make those often frustrating car trips with the kids into an exciting and fun experience or turn that boring walk in the park with the kids into a journy in ecology. Read Mary Budren's fascinating and fun book and they will be. "Travel Wise with Children" is a must reading for every parent, grandparent and young children's teacher. This book not only grew out of author's experience as a mother but also drew on the experiences of others to devise an endless variety of approaches to recreating everyday events with children into fun with learning. The lists of resources that accompany each chapter serve to enhance the value of this book. The practical ideas and examples encourage immediate application of the creative ideas presented. As a recent grandparent, I devoured this book and gave a copy to my children. I only wish I had this book when my children were growing. This is a book you will read and reread. Soon you will be creating fun learning experiences on your own. Read this book today and tomorrow your children's lives will become more enriched. As a Doctor of Education at The George Washington University, I strongly recommend that every grade school and middle school make this important new book an addition to his or her library. It is of the best books on creating learning experiences for children I have ever read. As a teacher and educator you will find this book invaluable in turning your classroom into a fun learning environment. ... Read more
