5-0 out of 5 stars Overflowing with great ideas!
Brimming with stories, poems, songs, and things to make and cook, this book offers itself as a friendly guide to the seasonal round of festivals. Arranged by season, each chapter includes a calendar of holidays to celebrate and, believe me, there are enough to keep you partying all year long! Some of my favorites are the more obscure ones that have fallen out of favor in our modern world, such as Shrove Tuesday celebrated prior to Lent, Whitsunday, and St. Nicholas Day. This book has so many ideas, you can't possibly do them in one year and that's why it's such a value. As I have, you will return to it again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the back cover:
Brimming with stories, poems, and activities, things to make and songs, "All Year Round" offers a friendly guide to the seasonal round of festivals. Helpful drawings and diagrams illustrate this practical book. It contains a wealth of experience that can help families find their own way around the year. Parents are encouraged to develop their traditions and family ways using this as a springboard. As the authors say, "The words are ours, the festivals are yours." "All Year Round" arose from the families of the authors, who also have run festivals workshops for years at "Lifeways" conferences. Whilst many parents they worked with still had living, festive, seasonal and family traditions, an increasing number of people lacked these and asked, "Why bother with festivals?" The authors believe that observing a round of festivals is an enjoyable way of bringing rhythm into children's lives, a way of providing meaningful landmarks to look forward to. Experiencing the unfolding year through stories, poems, and making seasonal tables encourages a love of nature. Each festival has a character of its own, bringing a special gift to family life. Celebrating together is important for families in all kinds of ways. This book offers suggestions about how to get going and helps all those who wish to deepen their understanding of festivals. Marije Rowling is a painter and art teacher, and also illustrated "The Children's Year". This was co-authored by Christine Fynes-Clinton who teaches music and crafts. Ann Druitt trained as an artist and teaches adult education. Her twelve stories round off the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great ideas!
The authors discuss various ways celebrating festivals throughout the year. What I found interesting was that this book was written from a British/European perspective so, it was easy for me to get new ideas for celebrating the holidays. There are songs and stories and patterns you can use to make the crafts in the book. I wish that they had color pictures though. The authors commented on this in the book saying it had something to do with a budget. The pictures were easy to interpret, I would just have liked to see them in color. The authors' ideas about a seasonal table were interesting and I plan on using this book as a starter for planning holidays and a seasonal table with my family. ... Read more

Like its sister holiday, Christmas, Easter has become a cultural event as well as a religious holiday. And because traditional Easter customs also represent pagan celebrations of spring and renewal, there is much information for children to digest this time of year. Recognizing and sorting these diverse and fascinating elements in an Easter anthology is quite an ambitious task. Fortunately, renowned illustrator Michael Hague (of The Velveteen Rabbit, The Teddy Bears' Picnic, and The Wizard of Oz) pulls it off with great success. In fact, there are three key reasons why this anthology will become a lifetime keeper. First, the anthology is sensibly divided into four sections: "A Time of Faith" speaks to spiritual belief in a time of death and darkness; "A Time of Rebirth" celebrates the themes of resurrection and renewal; "A Time of Celebration" explores the traditions of eggs, baskets, and bunnies; and "A Time of Love" glorifies nature's wonders and the renewal of a season. Second, the selections are exquisite, with beloved classics such as Oscar Wilde's "The Selfish Giant," William Blake's "Spring," and F.E. Corne's "Whythe Easter Bunny Lays Eggs." Third, Hague's generous pastel-and-watercolor illustrations are child-pleasing and versatile--shadowy and somber as Mary mourns the death of her son, and joyfully sunny for stories such as"The Boy Who Discovered Spring." This fine treasury is a wonderful resource for any family that celebrates Easter. (All ages) --Gail Hudson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great For a Family Tradition
...This one caught my eye for several reasons. Michael Hague is a British illustrator who usually illustrates fairy tales and classics like Peter Pan. He's not my "all-time favorite" in terms of style, but he does a good, quality job.

What really got my attention was the table of contents. The book is divided into four sections, each one starting with one of the four resurrection accounts (note: the "sacred art" is not that great on some of the pictures - a little scary!). Then there are stories, hymns and poems grouped according to four themes: "A Time of Faith," "...Rebirth", "...Celebration," and "...Love."Stories include "The Selfish Giant" by Oscar Wilde, "The Maid of Emmaus," "The Boy Who Discovered Spring," "Why The Easter Bunny Lays Eggs," "Bramble and Buckwheat' by Ethel Pochocki (note: who also wrote "Once Upon A Time Saints," a book we had growing up), "The White Blackbird" by Padraic Colum (great author), and "The Rat-Catcher's Daughter." Lots of poems by William Blake, Rossetti, Hopkins, and Aileen Fisher. Well, I bought the book this Christmas...I remembered to bring it out this Easter. It's about the size of a kid's picture book, but thicker (133 pp), and the cover is beautiful! So are the title pages and contents. We started reading it on Easter afternoon (I always cry at "The Selfish Giant's" ending...note: my kids (age 7-down) really liked the "Selfish Giant!") I really liked the hymns and poems. And most of the illustrations were really good (like I said, the resurrection ones weren't that great). The kids have been looking through it over and over. Even though they can't read the stories, they love the pictures. Oh, there's also a section on Easter customs from around the world that I look forward to reading.

So we'll be looking forward to bringing out this book in our home as an Easter tradition, and I recommend it for other families who are in the market for the same kind of book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not-too-happy Easter
I was hoping from its description that this book would offer a sort of Unitarian Universalist explanation of Easter and its symbols - one my young children would be able to understand and appreciate, without being scared. Unfortunately we started with the Oscar Wilde tale of the scary giant who eventually meets a boy with big holes in his wrists and immediately dies. Uh...what? Not good bedtime material. We tried some others that were more factual, but unfortunately they either completely blew the cover off the Easter bunny or read like dry essays. The illustrations are pretty, but I'm sending this one back.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful stories, beautiful artwork
The stunning illustrations will draw you and your children in to this book, where you'll find wonderful stories -- some of which have overtly spiritual themes, some which explain Easter traditions, and others which are just fun. The shorter poems can be read to younger children. I would have given this book 5 stars except that it quotes from the King James Version of the Bible - please, authors, give us more kids books that use age-appropriate versions of the Bible. ... Creating lasting impressions for the next generation!
These ideas and activities have been tried and tested by families like yours. They are designed to make lasting impressions on children of all ages.

Have fun with these simple science experiments that use items commonly found in the home to teach important truths from God's Word. For example:

• Attempt to crush a raw egg to learn about God's protection.
• Make candies "spark" and learn how to be a light in the world.
• Watch how peas fall out of a glass and learn to follow God, not the world.
• Make a rainbow and be reminded how God kept His promise to Noah.
• See how a hard-boiled egg can be sucked into a glass bottle and discover that nothing is impossible with God.

Jim Weidmann founded the Family Night movement several years ago and now teaches and leads dads in creativity teams where ideas are developed and shared. He also serves as the Executive Director of the National Day of Prayer. Jim and his wife, Janet, have four children.

Mark DeNooy has been involved in Christian Education for the past 15 years and has taught Science and Bible at Denver Christian Middle School for the past 10 years. He and his wife, Nancy, have three children.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Little More Effort.....
I enjoyed this book for the most part, having read it several years ago. I was not only disappointed but surprised at the lack of research that resulted in the remark that in the United States, Southerners evidently believed that shooting at a tree with mistletoe would cause the plant to fall to the ground. In the most exact sense that is true: mistletoe grows at the top of tall oak trees, and actually shooting it down is the easiest and safest way to obtain it; not some "whammy" ignorant people use to obtain a desired object. I think a little more work would have resulted in a little less disdain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Very complete with history and lore as well as activites. Two thumbs up on this one. Great pictures too. Information is presented in a very straight-forward way. I love this book - made for a much more meaningful christmas for me this year. The table of contents has:

1) The Solstice Dream (this chapter talks to Solstice celebrations and lore across the world and across the ages - from egypt to china to Rome. Poetry and prose from other sources are included.) All chapters end with celebration activites

2) Child of Wonder (this chapter talks to the birth of different gods across the ages - such as apollo, mabon, jesus)

3) The Green Bough (this chapter talks to the symbolism of the tree, the use of evergreens versus cherry tree etc. Green man is also discussed)

4) Old Sir Christmas (this chapter talks to the jolly old elf as well as the Shaman in the Tree and others across the cultures)

5) The Solstice Animals (this is about the slaughter of animals - 'nough said there - go vegetarian!)

6) The 12 days of Christmas

At the end of the book is a few pages on additional resources/references which is pretty good.

Great book! Most complete I've found and I like how it looks across cultures.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful and informative book
The Winter Solstice (as with the solstices and equinoxes) hold a special place in our world because anyone can celebrate them. So many cultures and religions have customs, beliefs, rituals that occur on or around the Solstice.

This book highlights some well known and not so well know European Solstice and Yule customs. It also delves quite a bit into Christmas customs that were influenced by eariler Pagan ones. But the information in this book is extended outside the Euro realm and reaches many cultures - really emphasising a common bond between all people.

The book is nice enough to offer as a gift or a coffetable treasure. It has a wonderful layout and lots of beautiful pictures, drawings, and poems. In the back of the book it has a couple of Rituals/ Plays that are suitable for public Ritual or a seasonal play.

This book can be enjoyed by anyone but definitely appeals to Pagans or curious/ liberal Christians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on Yule
I almost didn't buy this book because it had Christmas in the title and I supposed it would not have much in the way of the pagan holiday. I was very wrong. This is the best book I have ever read on the solstice. It tells of celebrating Yule before Christianity abducted it. "The Winter Solstice" has the look of an arty, coffee table book but it is definitely worth the read. It offers a couple of small rituals and some great phrases for ceremonies. It is more of a scholary history than a magickal book. I cannot wait to read it again next December to get me in the Yule spirit!

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent text on the history of winter
One of the better books I have seen when it comes bringing religion and folklore together - from the origin of the Christmas tree to the meaning behind the Twelve Days of Christmas. A must buy to the pagan as well as the Christian. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly the best!
It's truly the best book I own! The author is an expert! As the editor and publisher of a monthly, nanny trade publication I refer to this book, and get the best expert advice from, the author. It covers everything and anything I could imagine a nanny would need to know. It's a must-have for anyone in the nanny industry.

4-0 out of 5 stars a classic
The information is very straightforword. What struck me right away was the statement "neither the parent or the nanny is the more valuable human being". I was a believer from then on. This is an excellent book. The contents reflect that the writer has a through understanding of the basic fundementals of the nanny career and how the Professional nanny should function. Although I understand that the author was an aquaintance of Dr. Ben Spock, Debbie Davis, Jay Belskay, Fran Herman as well as other early childhood education pioneers, the work in this text is original and you get the sense when reading it that there are no pretenses. The only problem I have with this book is that the workbooks that go along with it need to be purchased separately. I think it should be complete package.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Nanny Textbook
I feel that this text is a great guide for any nanny or childcare provider. I am a nanny and I feel that all the information that I need is covered here in this text, I am extreemly pleased with it. This would also be a great reference for parents looking to hire a nanny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Underscores a wonderful online training course for nannies
This author is dedicated to providing information through classes and textbooks to give you the best in childcare providers. The online course educates and stimulates and prepares the potential provider. Understanding issues and emotions of a family care setting is very important, and this book and course gives answers and solutions not more questions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Much more than just games
We just got this book and we are already playing these games all of the time! The design of the book makes each game simple to understand, most of them don't need any special set up or props, and the activities are divided into age groups (2-7, 8-12, 13-15, 16+ and adult) But the book is about much more than fun activities, it is about a whole way of approaching life to find the joy in everyday situation (she includes activities to deal with getting dumped by a teenage boyfriend, on how to make important carrer choices, and on how to avoid the blues, even when they are the result of something very sad). One game I especially like is for ages 2-7, called "young ones" in the book. It is called Grouchy Food. The game is for when your child is grouchy or sad or in some other unplesant mood you say to them "Hmm, you look like you are in a grouchy mood today, I better adjust the lunch menu so you can eat what grouchy people eat. What do grouchy people eat, anyway? Worms, probably." Then you make spagehetti (we added food die until it was brown). The author notes that sad people sometimes need a little blue food coloring in their eggs, "lots of water to drink so they have extra for their tears," and "gental" pudding for dessert. How could any kid stay upset after that?! According to Barbara Sher laughter is an "organic, free, all-natural blues buster" and you and your kids will find plenty to laugh about with this book on hand. ... Read more

Several years ago, Cynthia Copeland shared the wisdom of her three children in Really Important Stuff My Kids Have Taught Me, which has 356,000 copies in print. Now she's written a parents' survival guide for those times when kids seem more at wit's end than wise. In the car? Try Red Car, Blue Car, Old Car, New Car; How Far, How Fast?; Raindrop Race; or I Heard It!, where the first one to hear the secret word on the radio wins. 5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun Ideas!
The ideas in this book are easy to do, not very expensive and for the most part, don't require anything exotic. There are suggestions for trips to take, things to do on trips, holidays, and more. There are ideas for making every day special, seasons, games for the whole family and more.

If you can remember to look over this book at times, you will find a wealth of ideas for just about anytime (hospital stays, new baby, hot days, rainy days etc.) Our family will probably not even come close to doing half of the things in this book. However, everything we have done has been fun.

We made the sugar eggs for some of the kids in the playgroup and they were a big hit.

This book is sure to help you enjoy the time you have with your children. IT has helped our family to explore new things and try new ideas.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is a family favorite!
I have three sons, ages 6, 4, and 2. We have all enjoyed the ideas and games in this book so well that I've started giving this book as a gift to new mothers. We've used all the recipes in here countless times, especially those for the various forms of play doh, bubble soap, and paint. I still turn to this book for inspiration on rainy, and sunny, days. I do think an improvement would be a spiral binding, as one reviewer suggested, so that the book would lay flat while in use, and I also agree with several of the reviewers who suggested that many of the song lyrics aren't very helpful without music. Having said that, the reason why I love this book best is that it helps me to foster the kind of homelife I envision for our family. My personal philosophy is that, as a society, we place too much emphasis on doing rather than being. Our young children are often signed up for multiple activities, from baby gymnastics to music class and swimming lessons, from the time they're 12 months old or even younger. Sometimes, for me, the tendency to "sign 'em up" comes from a feeling that they'll be "behind" all the other kids if they don't start T-ball by age 4; it also comes from a sense that I'll have fewer endless hours to fill for them, if they've got scheduled activities to attend. But I've come to realize that children need those endless hours of "down time" more than the activities. They need moments of spontaneous play, songs, giggles, rhymes, and cuddles. They need messy art projects, play dough and cookie cutters. And I've found that I enjoy our family life more when I spend the time playing with them at home, rather than arguing with each of them about getting into the car so we won't be late. Sometimes I skim through this book just to remind myself how quickly childhood passes, and to find one or two new inspirations (or even old, familiar inspirations)to try out during the day. Yes, there are ways in which it could be improved. But even as it is, it's an old friend our family wouldn't do without.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice for first-time parents
I received this book as a gift when my first child was born and still refer to it occassionally for those "what can we do today?" times. Chapters are arranged according to appropriate activities ranging from birth to age 3 years. Most important to us were the ideas of what to do with your newborn. Topics in each chapter include MOVEMENT, MUSIC, WORD PLAY, OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES, QUIET TIMES AND INDOOR GAMES. There are also chapters on various entertainment media, toys and parties. This book is full of FUN things you can do with your baby. The only minus is that if you don't know the tunes to some of the songs, you'll have a hard time singing to your little bumpkin. ... Book Description

Fathering is one of the most basic and profound human activities. Yet in addition to its many joys, fatherhood is often freighted with longing, sadness, anger, and misunderstanding. Most of us, men and women alike, are acutely aware of how difficult it is to father well, year after year, until, and even after, children are grown.

At the same time, the essential relationships between men and women and their children are under stress these days as never before, subject to the pressures of work, money, divorce, remarriage, and adoption. As a result, many fathers struggle with deep uncertainties about their parenting abilities. Meanwhile, society's definitions of masculinity appear ever more fluid, negotiable, and unreachable in today's media-saturated culture, which endlessly exposes men (and women) to a stream of images celebrating violence, war, hypermasculinity, athletic ability, corporate competition, alternative life-styles, "metrosexuality," and triumphant materialism.

Who, men might rightfully ask, are we expected to be? Do various pop-cultural definitions of masculinity really reflect what it is to be a man? What in men's true natures helps them be good fathers? Can aggression be useful? What masculine traits do fathers need to guard -- and guard against? How do men love their children, and how is being a father very different from and no less essential than being a mother? And how can women understand how men experience fatherhood?

This is the rich social reality that Dr. Mark O'Connell, a psychotherapist and father of three, addresses in his provocative, brilliant, and wise book. Drawing on both his professional case histories and personal experience, O'Connell describes the internal conflicts that many men feel about the difficulties of being a father but which they are often unable to discuss easily. Such issues include questions about authority, discipline, intimacy, physical contact, and sexuality.

In ways that are distinctly masculine, O'Connell says, fathers communicate standards, insist on respect for others, instigate necessary confrontations, and even engage in the kind of rough-and-tumble play that enlivens the developing neural structures in a child's brain. O'Connell contends that fathers play a crucial role in conveying the rules, expectations, and inevitabilities of life, and he describes how men can help their families by understanding and embracing their own masculinity. Men are different from women and must be allowed to parent differently as well.

The Good Father, however, is not just a very readable book for fathers struggling to find their best selves in relation to their spouses and children. Women will want to read The Good Father as well. All men and women have complex and important relationships with their fathers, whether or not those men were good fathers. Dr. O'Connell reveals how men and women alike bring these relationships to their parenting, and how we so often need to untangle these generational knots.

Filled with reassuring common sense, The Good Father opens a path toward happier, more satisfying relationships for the entire family while helping men become the good fathers they deeply want to be. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Moving here with kids? Skim it all, then reference as needed
If you're moving here with kids, take the time to skim this book all the way through to get an idea of what sort of things you can find here. Then when you want a particular activity, you can look it up again.

4-0 out of 5 stars older book, but still quite useful
Lots of good ideas, even if now slightly out of date (there's an entry for the now-demolished Kingdome, for example). Includes reviews and lists of zoos, u-pick berry and pumpkin farms, parks and outdoor sporting areas, indoor attractions (good for the dreary winter days), museums, shops and restaurants, seasonal festivals, and nearby out-of-town excursions.

3-0 out of 5 stars A reasonably good book on doing Seattle with kids
Generally good content on fun things do with children in the Seattle area. Few overall maps make it less practical for "in-car" use and for non-Seattle natives who aren't terribly familiar with the regions. Organized by type of activity, so it doesn't answer the question of "what's interesting to do around here or nearby?" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, Easy Crafts Using Things I Have at Home
I really liked this book.I purchased it after seeing the show "Donna's Day" on tv and I love it.The crafts are easy to do and use simple things I usually already have at home - often things I would otherwise throw away or recycle. The food recipes are unusual and easy and tasty!I think the drawings or illustrations are fun and colorful. I also like the Quick Tip section at the end of each craft.Everyone from babysitters to grandparents will have fun with kids if they have this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated, complicated projects put a damper on Donna's book.
I was very excited when I ordered this book. However, the excitment did not last for long. The projects seem to be unoriginal and so out dated that I can't imagine today's children would be entertained. Some projects alsorequire hard to find materials. The book was a good concept but was poorlyexecuted by the author. For fun easy to do arts and crafts for the familytry one of the following books: MudWorks, Disney's Family Fun Crafts, TheUltimate Book of Kid Concoctions (my favorite) or Kids' Crazy Arts andCrafts.

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding book-my whole family loves it and uses it
I have watched Donna Erickson on the Donna's Day television program on PBS and I think she is great.I was very excited to see that she now has a book based on the show.Donna is great- her enthusiasm for kids and families is contagious. Her book is as good as the show with great illustrations and easy to follow directions for activities. I have used her first book, Prime Time Together With Kids, until it almost wore out. I am glad there is another one. I have already given Donna's Day to my kids' teachers and they love it as well. I hope the show goes to a daily broadcast(its on once a week in my town) and that there are more books coming from Donna.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just like the show
