3-0 out of 5 stars This is a must read for campfire entertainment
We kept reading this book looking for how to have fun on a camp trip, and before long we were laughing at the content that we realized we were having fun. While this book offered little practical advice about having fun with kids during camping, reading the book aloud with your children certainly provided comic relief.Very entertaining book, but we're sure the author meant well.

5-0 out of 5 stars a lifesaver
I am a mom of 3 children, ages 8, 4, and 7 months. When my husband purchased a camper for our family, I was full of questions. "How can we go camping with 3 kids and have a great time?" I'm so glad I foundthe book "A Guide to Happy Family Camping." This book was alifesaver. It answered all my questions. And gave me valuable advice onplanning, food and play. This book also has great resource information on-planning, packing, and preparing -magazines, catalogs, and great web sites- lists of parks with addresses and phone numbers. Thanks to this book ourfirst camping trip was a great success. This book is a must not just forinexperienced campers but for all camping families ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ideas to entertain your two year old
The many activities are divided into language, running and jumping, animal, car, art, counting, teddy bear, imagination, nursery rhyme, singing, cooking, nature and quiet games. Within each of these headings the games are subdivided into games for the young, middle and older two year old child Many of the ideas require no or basic household materials. The book is especially valuable in giving ideas that work in the car, doctor's office, etc. I rated this book 4 stars because (in my opinion) some of the activities presented are not new or imaginative (ie sing You Are My Sunshine to your child, or do the Itsy Bitsy Spider with your child and his teddy bear) Overall the book is good and helpful however, and will introduce new ideas and remind you of some tried and true activities for the young ones. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent-Both Fun and Educational
This is a fantastic book by 2 very dedicated professional educators. It is very worthwhile both for its 'fun' interactive activities with your children, and as an extremely valuable educational tool for 'stealth teaching'! (Your child thinks they are just playing, while they are secretly being educated!) We have also found it very useful in helping your child with any learning 'issues', (reading, math, etc.) using enjoyable, interactive activities.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is just for me.....
My daughter just started second grade. I am very uncreative, and have ahard time thinking much beyond flash cards. When my daughter's teacher toldme last year that she had to work on phonics, I had no idea what to do.(The Hooked on Phonics program costs almost $300!) This book addressesphonics, math, and more, for a lot less money. The ideas really are fun -this is as painless as it gets. A good investment. I'm going to buy the 1stgrade book for my son.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a Thrilled Second Grade Teacher
As a second grade teacher, I am extremely excited about A+ Activities forSecond Grade.FINALLY, a developmentally aprropriate resource for parentsthat is "user friendly," and FUN!Miller and Singer havedeveloped a sequence of activites that allow learners to celebrate activelearning at home.I will be utilizing this book in my own classroom tocompliment my existing curriculum with hands-on learning experiences.Iwill be recommending this book, HIGHLY, to the families of my 2nd graders,as well as my colleagues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for novice and experienced outdoor cooks
As an outdoor trainer, I find this (and other Dian Thomas books) invaluable parts of my personal training library. She offers many simple yet intriguing ideas for outdoor cooking fun, suitable for novices or experienced cooks who want to add flair to their outdoor cooking experiences. My particular favorites are the wheelbarrow grills (great when the local ordinances will not allow us to build a fire on the ground) and the turkey cooked hung from a tripod (We fed 15 people with a "bird" done this way. It took a lot of work to set it up, but we were paid off in oohs & ahs for our inventiveness!)

5-0 out of 5 stars "Roughing It Easy" is da bomb!!!!
Roughing it easy was problably the best camping book I have ever read. It had lots of inovative ideas that made my camping experience very memroable. Another book I might recomend is Roughing it Easy 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the few down to earth fun camping/cooking books ever!
I have over 35 years experience in camping, hiking, survival training and having fun and a great experience in the back yard and the wilderness. This book offers a smile and easy fun for enjoying the rough aspects of the outdoors. I am sincerely disappointed that it is out of print. It must be that the publishers has his/her toenails done daily, because he/she has no clue as to what enjoyment this book can bring away from their overdomestication. I have worn out my first copy (the one with the colored pics), but smiled doing so. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you don't have it, GET IT!
This is the best of the best for new and old parents. I didn't read this until my 3rd and still found out all kinds of new things. The book is well thought out and planned. Easy to understand but most of all PRACTICAL. The ideas presented in this book don't require you to have a PH.D to apply. Nor does it require a six digit income to supply the items suggested for use. The women who wrote this book are obviously mothers. Which doesn't seem to be a requirement anymore for giving advice. (ha ha). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful child-rearing advice
I loved this book. I read it when I was working as a nanny. It inspired me. The author believes that it is the primary role of a caregiver to stimulate the child's creativity. The book tells you how to do this. The chapters are arranged by age, starting from infancy. She gives advice about encouraging creative behavior through movement, music, art, language, etc. The baby I was taking care of at the time also loved the activities. Believe me, this book is worth the money. ... Read more

Stacy DeBroff offers hope and help for parents with a child whose schedule resembles a Stanley Kaplan cram course. Sign Me Up offers a sane alternative, urging parents to use extracurricular activities to find a child’s "sweet spot--and unlock their true potential." Her first step is nailing parent peer pressure. As she explains,"the question what do you do for work? has been replaced by asking what activities does your child do?"DeBroff offers wise counsel for holding your ground and choosing activities to help your child develop and mature, rather than packaging them for college applications. She establishes a balance between the goals of activity (discipline, self-discovery) and the value of downtime (spontaneity, self-motivation). Her advice features quotes from parents and coaches, and focuses on the details of hundreds of family friendly choices including lacrosse, chess, ballet, archery, drumming, and cartooning. Each activity is explored in terms of time, cost, competition and fit with a child’s temperament and skills. Debroff also includes smart ideas about thorny issues such as how to be a spectator and what to do when your child wants to quit. This excellent book would have been strengthened with more details about volunteering and community activities outside of scouting. If after-school activity is about enriching maturity, DeBroff might encourage parents to sign up their children to help repair the world. --Barbara Mackoff ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A parent's bible for building a healthy activity schedule fo
In today's busy world, how do parents know when they should cut back on their child's extra-curricular activities? Not wanting to disappoint their children, many parents sign them up for more activities than they can handle. How can parents choose which activities are best suited for their children, and how can they find out more about each one?

The book, "Sign Me Up!" by Stacy DeBroff, is a wonderful place for parents to begin familiarizing themselves with all the programs that exist today. This book is more than a guide -- it's a bible! Parents should refer to this book often before making a decision to sign their children up for any activity. From this book readers will learn what an activity is about, what costs are usually involved, what to look for in a good coach or teacher, and many more answers to other important questions. highly recommends this book -- parents will feel like they are getting advice from a good friend...important advice that will enable them to set up a healthy activity schedule for their children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super guide for all moms with more than one kid
This book is a marvelous reference for any parent who is going through the activity/sports craze with their children. As a teacher and a parent of two boys I am well aware of the increased amount of activities and sports kids are getting involved with at a young age. With my boys, I have gone through the sign up process, only to find my house filled with moans and complaints when practices and game days come along. Not only is this book a helpful reference to finding out more about specific sports and activities, but it has useful information about dealing with kids wanting to quit and positive ways to get to the bottom of it. This book has been a great help to me in dealing with both my sons, finding out what they like best, and what I can expect as a parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps you know what you're getting yourself in to!
Sign Me Up! is a great guide for parents for looking to find out more about after-school sports and activities. As a mother of three it is not always easy to balance everyone's schedules. My 10 year old daughter as already joined two different sports and quit because the physical demands where too much for her, and she was clearly not having fun. With her I have realized she needs more one on one time, and I have been looking for sports and activities that could offer her this. This kind of information is exactly what I have been finding in Sign Me Up! Not only do I feel like I know more about what each sport and activity will entail, but I can tell my kids more about what they can expect and help them make their decision before signing up. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone! It's wonderful for parents with kids of all ages!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource! Makes life easier for busy moms
What a wonderful resource! I'm a mother of 9 year old twin boys, and I've had a hard time figuring out good sports and activities for them to join, and which ones to avoid. I feel like everyday the boys come home with a different sport they want to join and it's so hard to pick. This book was a GREAT way to help us all figure out what would be the best for them to do. It's so easy to use and so easy to find what you are looking for right away. It has outlined notes and information about each sport that is extremely helpful in selecting the right sport for your kids. Both my boys are in baseball, but one of my sons has talked a lot lately about karate. After reading the section on Karate I talked to him about it, so he would know more about what to expect. Overall, I think this book is a helpful tool for parents to have, and I am sure I will use it over and over again in the next few years as the boys try out new activities and sports. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me
I don't feel that I'm that creative of a person, so I thought this book would be helpful.I didn't find it full of suggestions for games; a better title might be "what to do with your life each month."The book had sections recommending that I buy a new outfit, tweeze my brows or other suggestions for mothers (inspirational, but not what I bought the book for).It also recommends chocolate pudding, peanut butter and other allergy/choking hazards for games with 6-9 month olds.IMHO the book wasn't helpful: it wasn't aimed at games, it was an oddly written "what to expect the first year."

5-0 out of 5 stars A million ideas
I love this book.It is separated into each month of your child's first 24 months and has creative ideas for play (and the best part is that you don't have to buy things; the ideas use items you usually already have in the home); short recipes (e.g. make your own baby wipes); developmental information; mom time ideas; poems or short songs.I am not a creative mom, so this book is wonderful. It gives me easy ideas each month. For example, the book recommends saving holiday card fronts that you can put together as a picture book for your baby to explore. What easy, inexpexensive ideas!I highly recommend this. The only slightly negative comment I have is that there is no index, so sometimes it's hard to remember where I saw some of the great ideas and I have to look page by page. But it's worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun with young toddlers
When the same-ol', same-ol' gets boring to even your repetition-loving young toddler, this book will get the fun rolling again. My 13-month old adores the sticker game (I've used the stickers game to teach her the parts of her face -- and mine), and we've used other games from the book to the delight of the whole family.I'd definitely recommend this if you're in need of more ideas to entertain and engage your child.

1-0 out of 5 stars Can be dangerous
Overall the activities are good, but some pose a hazard to your children-for example, the book mentions that helium balloons are a great way to entertain your 4 month old baby. Balloons are one of the number one killers amoung children. Another suggestion was to put stickers on the child's hands, my baby would be able to remove them and swallow those. Use this book cautiously and beware if your childcare provider uses it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great selection of fun things to do for a young child!!
This book provides some really great (and inexpensive) methods of entertaining a young child.I first had "Games Babies Play" which was great for the first nine months, but then didn't have as much to do for an older baby. After purchasing this book, I wish I had had it from the start.

Each month has a list of activities, as well as helpful hints that are great for first time parents. It has some nice journal notations for development also. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Candymaker's Gift provided very worthwhile reading.
The Candymaker's Gift put spiritual truths into a charming story of the origin of the candy cane. It focuses on the importance of Jesus, the one whose birth we celebrate at Christmas. The scripture that is presented is challenging and possibly life-changing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new way to look at the birth of Jesus!
All of us are looking for new traditions we can start at holiday time. Helen Haidle has given us a look at the candy cane that can bring the full meaning of Christmas into our homes every Christmas. It is the story of the candymaker who wanted to be able to give to his customers a candy that would represent the birth of Jesus. Between the candymaker and his granddaughter, we now have a sweet treat to help us remember. I will read this book every year to both my children and grandchildren. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource book
Contains great activities for the preschool classroom and the explaination of why you should use them. This is a wonderful resource for the classroom or at home. It helps explain why the activities are developmentally appropriate for the specified ages. This book is very well put together. This book stands at the forfront of my teacher resource collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure trove of great ideas
This book is terrific. It's packed with fun and inspiring ideas that work just as well at home as in a preschool setting. I find that I turn to this helpful book time and time again when researching my own parenting articles and books. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource and Guide for Planning
I have had this book for only one week and love it. It helps me plan by month and breaking the month down to week by week. I teach 3 year olds and they have enjoyed the items I have selected. These children are very challenging and to keep them occupied in "learning fun' is a challenge. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book chock-full of ideas
Outstanding book...something for everyone, and most items that need to be purchased can be had at the dollar store.Rock-Solid book full of well-thought out parties.

5-0 out of 5 stars great resource
This an excellent book with a number of party ideas for all ages.I especially like that this books gives suggestions for older kids parties.Packed with recipes, decoration, invitation, and favor ideas to go along with your theme.I will be using this for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource Book!
This book was easy to follow and had ideas in it which were easy to adapt to other themes.I loved the information about how much activity each different age group should be able to handle. My three-year-old's party went off without a hitch thanks to this book.It will get used many more times in years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful, Comprehensive Guide for Parents
I find this book to be very helpful for prents planning a party for their children. It's completely foolproof, from deciding on the number of guests appropriate for your childs age to making clever invitations, food, activites and take home gifts...all falling into one of several themes. There is a theme for any child's interest. The instructions are simple and very adptable to many different situations. I have had this book for years and used it many, many times with 4 kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for all ages
I used this book, and it's follow up (The Penny Whistle Birthday PartyBook) to plan my son's 3rd birthday party. Both books are excellant...andyou just need one of them. They both start with a good overview of theparty segments: arrivals, active games, wind-down/food, leaving. They alsogive good time lines for organizing and purchasing things (best to start 6weeks in advance, but can be condensed to two if you put it off).

All ofthe chapters have a different "theme", and include: how to make acool invitation, decorations, fun party favors, thematic foods to serve, thematic games to play

What I liked most was that they have a specialsection on parties for kids 4 and they differ from olderchildren. They also encourage you to take their party plans and adapt themfor your own situation.

My case: my son wanted a bug theme. There is notbug-theme party in either book.I took the basic principles for partiesfor toddlers, adapted games from some of the other parties (there is adinosaur party, a teddy bear party) and added some things of my owninvention.

I read several of their party themes just to get myimagination rolling.I enjoyed them all thoroughly.

In a nutshell:Easy to read, very well organized, the only book you need to planchildren's parties! ... Read more
