5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Transformed our Family
We discovered this book after being introduced to Stephen Covey's work through business (7 Habits of Highly Successful People.) We were delighted that he and his wife have applied these principles to family life, and we set to work on applying what we learned to our family.
For example, we have made a concerted effort at changing the way we listen to each other in our family. Now we truly have adopted the culture of listening first to understand, and what a gift that has been to our relationships. Time after time, we catch ourselves from going down the old useless and hurtful path of arguing/debating/proving who's experience is right, and instead stop and listen with empathy to understand.
We also recommend the picture book If I Ran The Family, for sharing these insights with kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars A set of tools for building and strengthening families
In introducing "7 Habits for Highly Effective Families," Covey writes that societal forces have changed, and that we can no longer rely on a family-friendly society to help us with our families. That approach, which he termed the "outside-in" approach was useful in the middle of the 20th century. But at the turn of the century, when societal forces are combining to undermine the family, Covey argues that we need an "inside-out" approach, where we take greater care as parents to create a family culture that encourages goodness, morality and love.

With that premise in mind, Covey applies the 7 Habits to family life. I'm not familiar with the 7 Habits as they are applied to individuals, but as I've tried to apply them in my family I've been impressed by the results. As a husband and father, I feel as if I now have a set of tools to build and strengthen my family, and an understanding of how to use them.

4-0 out of 5 stars More good advice on how you manage your family life.
After reading about Highly Effective People, Covey gives more sound advice on how effective families function. I think Covey does a good job in describing how effective family structures place all members in a win/win situation. This reading is rather light on how to tackle issues with family members in difficulties and/or problems situations. Covey just feels that all members are in the family to work together. In most circumstances, there is always one or more family members battling difficulties such as drug abuse, depression, uncontrollable behavior. Covey would probably argue that good family structures would prevent/minimize such problems. However all families face some difficulties and the book is rather light on facing these problems.
A good read on how to structure a family and make each member a contributor to the team. This book is not a cure all, but it has some sound advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on Families Available
Do yourself and your family a favor and order this book and/or the tapes/cd. It will be one of the best investments you can make for yourself and your loved ones.

The entire family should read and absorb it's concepts and principles for a happier, healthier, family life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will help you become a better parent
I read just about every parenting book that I can get my hands on and this one is a must read. No matter your background, no matter whether you had good role models or not you too can learn how to be that parent that you have always dreamed of being. It just takes some practical tools and some motivation on your part.

Every parent should read this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy read w/ valid points//Excerts are from Workbook
First off, the excerpts (table of contents, page and backcover) above are from the workbook, not the book.

The book was a very easy and quick read. I have suggested it to a number of friends as I feel it brings up some valid points and can be used as a spring board to further discussion. Too many people marry without talking about what they are getting into and expecting. The book talks about the myths of marriage, the ebb and flow of relationships, expectations, and ends with a discussion on faith and religion in marriage. That is in the last chapter and can be skipped if you are not religeous and/or shy away from "Christian" stuff. The rest of the book only touches on faith as it relates to the authors description of an event.

The book was written in '95 and mentions much of the relationship self help stuff from that era. The authors are married, and they give examples from thier own marriage, as well as from other couples they have counseled. There are out-quotes, places to pause for discussion, and a few diagrams.

As someone else mentioned, the book does make you feel as if you have to get the workbooks to get a complete picture. You don't. I thought they were overpriced for what they are, although they too can help in discussion, especially if you aren't doing any other than what color flowers to get and what kind of limo you want. The excercises range from really simple ratings (on a scale of 1 to 5, how improtant is the following to you, do alone and compare and discuss) to more time consuming stuff (what unwritten rules do you have?). I found out in one excercie that my honey expects me to do 80% of the childrearing, while I expected we'd be closer to 60/40.

Part of it is intuitive stuff, part of it is stuff that you might think, "I hadn't thought of it that way". If you're reading about this book, congrats and Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST read for couples planning to marry!
This book is fabulous. My husband I read it as part of our pre-marital preparation, and we return to the principles taught in it frequently. It gives a solid look at relationships and the things that make a marriage tick. Having the perspectives of the two married authors gives this book an advantage over other pre-marital books because it accurately portrays both the male and female perspectives, emotions, and needs in a marriage. This book is a must read, whether you're just engaged or have been married for 10 years!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for marriage problem prevention
As an Author, Coach, and Motivational Speaker I read a lot of books about people, their motivations, and their relationships. Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts is an honest, straight forward, and personal journey to a healthy marriage. It's an excellent relationship book and I give it an A+.

The Parrott's share their personal relationship journey with all the challenges, confusion, and celebration that a relationship can bring. They ask and explore seven powerful questions and illustrate them with their experiences with each. They then provide practical solutions that you can implement to help you create, improve, and enhance your marriage.

The seven questions are:

1. Have you faced the myths of marriage with honesty?
Happily ever after only comes with working on your marriage.

2. Can you identify your love style?
We each give and receive love differently. Is your partner actually hearing the I Love You's you send their way?

3. Have you developed the habit of happiness?
I loved their line about the right attitude in spite of atmospheric conditions.

4. Can you say what you mean and understand what you hear?
Too many times we talk around the problem and then only hear our preconceived notions about the responses we receive.

5. Have you bridged the gender gap?
Men and Women are different! If you don't get a clue about how and why you're in for a hard, hard time of it.

6. Do you know how to fight a good fight?
Skip the theatrics, defensiveness, and low-blows. Conflict in a relationship is natural and you can deal with it positively by being honest and respectful with your mate.

7. Are you and your partner soulmates?
"Tending to the spiritual dimension of marriage is what unites couples in unbreakable bonds."

I recommend you get a copy of Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts whether you're single, engaged, or married. It will prepare you for a great relationship that lasts a lifetime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Helpful
This is by far one of the best marriage preparation books I have read. I urge every engaged couple to read it and if possible to also go through 1000 Questions for Couples by Michael Webb. I tell all my clients to get those two.

4-0 out of 5 stars Loved the book
I really enjoyed the book. It helped me realize that the problems I was facing in my marriage were similar to the problems other couples face.

I think this book will be very helpful for men. My fiance had tried to explain many of the topics in the book, but for some reason I failed to grasp her explanation until the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Up-to-date and concise resource, Excellent
This book is FABULOUS - it's written in a concise manner, is the most up-to-date baby book available, and is filled with logical medical advise. It really "empowers" parents and I found the language to be friendly and not at all condescending. As a medical professional and 1st time mother, the data-based approach is fabulous. In contrast to other readers, I thought the sleep section reflects other resources I have read on the subject (Babywise is not safe, etc). The quantity of material is immense and this is my favorite reference on my infant.

5-0 out of 5 stars The parenting book I have wanted
If you are a new parent like me, you have probably spent a small fortune on parenting books. I was completely clueless about having a newborn in the house! I was desperate for the information I needed to make informed and educated decisions about everything from diaper wipes to spit up and beyond. None of the books I had bought previously helped as much as Baby 411.
This book is organized in a way I can the info I need quickly-which is a real lifesaver when I hardly have time to take a shower with my 11 week old! I also appreciate the fact that the authors want me to understand the nitty gritty details of my child's health. I am sure my pediatrician would be happy to explain all this stuff to me if I asked, but I simply don't feel there is enough time in my well baby checks to get this level of information. I realize that there is no one size fits all here, but I think Baby 411 is the most helpful book I have read and many other parents will benefit from the information, humor, and practical advice that this book offers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource!
This book is great for new parents. Good tips, easy to look up topics, and lots of practical advice and medical information. We have found it very useful with our newborn and now buy it for all of our friends who are expecting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good advice
Lots of info in an easy to read package. Liked the conversational style. Highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars SO helpful
I bought Baby 411 because several of my friends recommended it. I took it to the hospital with me when I delivered my baby and have carried it wiuth me since then. It has been SO helpful I can't even begin to say how many times the information in it was more clearly written and easily found compared to all the other books I had on newborns.
The majority of the book is about the medical topics that we all face with our babies and how to handle them. It has helped me learn when I need to panic and when I can relax.
I think that any book that discusses controversial parenting topics like family beds and discipline is sure to make somebody who disagrees with them upset. But I think the book does a great job of taking its position and telling parents make their own choices. I know that when my baby was first born, I doubted all of my decisions and felt wrong if I did not follow what friends and family suggested was the right thing to do. Their message is that it is okay to do what works for you, but if there is a medical reason not to do something it's explained. My pedi also advised against the parent directed feedings that the Babywise people like because it is not good for the baby's growth, especially for breastfeeding.
I think my favorite chapter was the one devoted to poop and pee. The info on introducing solid food was also great.
This book has helped alot. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great For Men and Women
This book is great for those that cannot grasp an understanding for the opposite sex. Updated and different from the modest and older books, this one is very straight forward while being fun and easy to read. Both Men and Women can benefit from this book. Great for couples, even better for the single life. It cannot be beat for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book ever writen!!!
If you have any questions about your sexual performance then you need to get this book. This book tells you everything you need to know about your sex life. Where to touch a women/man, how to touch a women/man, where thier secret spots are and how to make them "sream". I know this all sounds odd but I own this book, it is more like my bible then a guide. You will find everything you need to know about the "unknown" when it comes to sex. :)

3-0 out of 5 stars sort-of super
This is a great book to look at. The text and color are fabulous and the pictures are photos of the pretties people Mr. Davis could find. But I ended up feeling like I was reading a compilation of Cosmo articles. I'd heard all the advice before, and felt like I was comstantly waiting for something new and unusual. This is a great book for the younger audience (I wouldv'e had great fun with it at slumber parties circa ninth-tenth grade), but for mature adults who need some good, honest, smart advice, this book falls a little short!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book -- great to read together!
Thanks to this book my partner and I have had some of the best sex you can possibly imagine. And it's been with each other!

This book is a truly excellent manual on how to get more out of a sexual relationship. The pictures are erotic without being dirty, and the text is helpful without being lewd. It's fun to read on its own, but it's been instructive and enjoyable to read it together with my partner. It's opened conversations on topics she couldn't address on her own, and made us both more imaginative and willing to try new things.

The passages on "what he's really thinking" and "what she's really thinking" [during sex] are so funny--and true--that they brought tears to our eyes, and are worth the cost of the book alone.

Let me quickly put to rest the idea that this book can be a turn-on in and of itself, like a dirty magazine but with better text and higher quality photos. It's not that kind of book. Well okay, maybe it can be a turn-on. But the focus of the text is not on the act of sex in isolation, but on sex within a relationship. That reduces its value to those whose only plan is to hold it in their left hand in the bathroom. The author articulately explains the value of monogamy and the drawbacks of casual relationships and/or cheating.

Final note: this manual is for practitioners of hetrosexual sex only. There is nothing in here for lesbians or homosexuals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very seductive massage tips.
The readers who rated this book low, must have only got to the table of contents and not much further, because anyone who reads this great book on sensual massaging is going to come out of this very content and with a smile on their face. The book offers very good, unique, seductive, and stimulating advise. One day after work, I was tired and totally stressed out. At night, my girlfriend told me to lay down and relax, she started massaging my scalp, neck, face, back, legs and feet. I felt soooo good, I could have fallen asleep, but she asked me to turn on my back. She started massaging the front of my legs, stomach and she gently and seductively started massaging .... I was errotically charged! The whole massage was very relaxing, yet her touch was smooth, sexy and a major turn on. She had given me massages before, but never like that one. Of course i had to read the book for myself. From time to time, we give each other the best sensual massages we can ever imagine. Don't take my word for it, go out and get the book. ....

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful and seductive
Just like all of ann Hoopers other books, this one is a real winner!!! I found this book to contain many romantic and seductive ideas on how to rub my lover in certain ways that will definately satisfy him and me. A massage is a massage, but after reading this erotic massage manuel, all your massages are going to be sensually pleasing for both of you, especially if you read this book together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Erotically educational. I loved it.
I just finished reading this book and I immediately put what I learned from it to use. This great book is filled with erotic and seductive ways to massage and rub your partner in ways he or she will not only like, but love. This great book will teach you how to massage in different ways and where to apply more pressure or less pressure. This informative and practical guide is loaded with extensive full-color illustration. It surely taught me a thing or two about erotic massage.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT INSTRUCTIONAL BOOK.
Anne Hooper writes another great book. This is a dynamic guide to understanding not only your body, but the body of your significant other. This wonderful book contains erotic massage techniques. It contains easy to read instruction on sensual touch which can be used for a variety of benefits including enhanced sexuality, pregnancy relief, and reduced stress. Sensual massage can contribute to a more satisfactory relationship and this book really helps with questions and answers, real-life case histories, practical help and extensive full-color illustration.

After reading this book, I've began eroctically massaging my boyfriend. Not only does it relax him and helps him relieve stress, it also puts him in the mood and he's always more than willing to return the favor. Great book, I highly recommend it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best book on ADHD
This book is a very basic handbook. If you dont know anything about ADHD, it will be helpful, as it answers most of your questions. For more experienced ADHD parents, this book will not tell you anything you already know.

I have some basic knowledge on ADHD, so this book didnt tell me anything new.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
As a parent of a six-year-old with ADHD, I highly recommend this book to all parents of children up to age 10 that have ADHD. It's easy for a doctor, social worker, etc., to tell you how to raise a child with ADHD, but there is nothing like getting tips and suggestions from other parents who live with an ADHD child. Ms. Alexander-Roberts has written a marvelous, infomative book that should be read by ALL parents struggling to raise a child with ADHD.

This book, written by Colleen Alexander-Roberts, is based on her actual parenting experiences--both what works and what doesn't work. Not only does she give the reader many tips and suggestions that work, she also gives the readers tips and advice from other parents.

The book "The ADHD Parenting Handbook" should be on the shelve in every parents home. Yes, it's that good. In fact, I saw it on the bookshelve in the office of my son's therapist. When I asked about the book, the therapist said that she highly recommended that my wife and I read it. We're so glad she did because it has became OUR BIBLE on ADHD and parenting.

Thank you, Colleen, for taking the time to share your real life experience with readers such as myself. It's obvious that you wrote this book for parents just like my wife and myself.

This is one book every parent should read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The author must have spent a day with my kid
If you don't believe that ADHD exists or that your kid could actually have it read this book! Through hundreds of interviews of parents coping with the agonizing and frustrating task of raising a difficult child it becomes easy to recognize and understand the universal symptoms and challenges of ADHD.

For myself this book is truly the BIBLE of parenting. There is advice to help with school mornings, bedtime, and bathtime, eating out at restaurants, tantrums, travelling with your child and trying to talk on the phone when your son or daughter is in the house.

In the chapter Problems That Drive You Wild, some of the case studies and references were described with such clarity that I had to ask myself, "Did these people spend an afternoon with my daughter?" What is very important, is that the author encourages each parent to modify the suggestions for their own particular child and family situation. I have found Books by many Professionals who have not had the experience of dealing with an ADHD child to be very limited in scope.

There are extensive resources for interfacing with your child's school and advocating for their academic success. You are actually helped walk through the maze of educational bureaucracy.

This is probably the ONLY book that I myself have read that gives you strategies for feeding your child while they are taking medication for ADHD. If your child has shown a dramatic improvement while on medication this will be very important to you.

I only wish that I had found this book three years ago, when I realized that my child had special needs. Yet one can not look back; I hope that those of you who are reading this review will benefit by the knowledge it can provide you.

I used to be an advice columnist, and if I wrote this clearly and amusingly, I'd probably still be in the business. 10 Secrets doesn't float all over the place or get lost in heavy-breathing or New Agey mumbo julumbo. It offers a clear, delightful path to sexual fulfillment. My only concern now is keeping my husband from trying to meet Felicia Zopol.

5-0 out of 5 stars The bedroom is now my favorite room in the house!
I've read it. My husband's read it. I even gave it to my 24-year-old daughter to read and she loved it. We all loved it. I know it's really helped my husband and me. The bedroom is now my favorite room in the house. It didn't use to be that way. We had lots of trouble getting on the same page in that department, let me tell you. But not anymore. Great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is such an excellent book
Since reading this, my husband and I have gotten so much closer and happier, not to mention sexier. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Still giggling with delight
This book still has me giggling with delight. I feel like a teenager again. I feel better than a teenager because now I'm finally getting it all right and not groping around in the proverbial dark back seat of a Chevy. I had my first genuine, mind blowing orgasm after reading this book and trying out some of the techniques. Then I got my husband to give me one (another first). Thank you, thank you, thank you. I don't know how I lived without this book for so long.

5-0 out of 5 stars Movin' on Up!!
I thought my bedroom career was definitely on the downside of the hill. But after reading this book, I was inspired to start climbing again, and lure my husband along for the ride. What a ride it's been! We're happier than ever, not to mention sexier. There was some really great points in the book and they were presented in a logical progression that helped us move step by step to a better sex life. Here's hoping for a sequel. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Help for the Hillbilly
Social Graces was a big help in knowing how to tip waitresses, bell boys, ect... Working in a tourist town and knowing who to tip or not can sometimes be a concern for most people. Especially for those of us that don't get out of the hills much, so the book was very helpful. I would like to see more manner books on social conversation and answering gracefully in difficult situations. So keep writing Aunts! (You will understand that statement when you read the book!) Buy it today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Social Graces
Once upon a time, children learned social skills around the family dining table. With today's busy schedules and often so many mothers working, families find less time for such traditions. Experts on hospitality and warm sociability, Ann Platz and Susan Wales provide readers with an easy-to-follow how-to manual of social graces. Learning the rules of etiquette is possible with Social Graces. This charming book makes life easier and more fun, and also helps instill a sense of self-confidence. Life is like a game, if you don't know the rules, you can't succeed in life. It's important to remember, however, that the rules of etiquette are of the book; manners are of the heart. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars simply life-changing
I bought this book at a homeschool conference about 15 years ago. It literally changed my life. I have fond memories of sitting down at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee and my "Bonnie" book. Bonnie became like a friend, offering great advice and encouragement. Her writing style is warm and uplifting. She made me want to succeed at organizing my home. I learned how to organize my kitchen cabinets, and ever since my mom has recommended ME to organize the kitchen when someone in the family moves! And I was the family "messy!" Her suggestion on implementing Minimum Maintenance made the difference for me in keeping my house clean and presentable. I highly recommend this book for anyone who struggles as I did with managing all the STUFF/CHORES in her home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Helpful for the Disorganised Homemaker
I just loved this book. I would give it ten stars if I could. It was so full of down to earth and helpful advice and very entertaining to read. There were hints on clutter clearing and how to tackle a home that has got a bit out of control. Lists of daily jobs and what Bonnie calls minimum maintenance were a great help. If you find it hard to keep on top of the house and it seems forever in a cluttered mess (like mine) this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars It'll Change Your Life
I first read this book about fifteen years ago, and it had such an impact, I re-read it about once a year. It's almost time to buy one that's not so dog-eared. Bonnie's way of doing things are down-to-earth and fit into real life. Her knack for organizing things shows in the way she has organized her thoughts and methods. This book will make a difference in your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
Bonnie's books are all great! This was the first one I ever read and it changed how I did things around the house. I got so organized that I eventually wrote my own book - Marnie's Kitchen Shortcuts.

Thanks, Bonnie, for the excellent tips and for the help with the kids, too (401 Ways to Get Your Kids to Work at Home)! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A good book for yuppie moms w/ babies& toddlers
This is a good book if you have a toddler or younger child.
and also it is good if you have NO experience being frugal and have never heard of discounts, etc...
I suspect the author is married to a guy with a good job and he makes a lot more money than my husband does, I also suspect that they own a nice home, and aren't struggling to come up with a downpayment on a home.
Its easy to be a stay at home mom when Dad earns a lot.
maybe her idea of cutting back means on the dinner parties and expensive jewelry
a good book for the yuppie set.

I really read this book, unlike the authors friends who posted here and clogged up the true review space with false praise

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book - Practical Advice
I really like this book - it gives you the knowledge you need to know to make changes in your budget, expectations, etc. Topolnicki really knows her stuff, and delivers the message in a user-friendly manner. I recommend this book to all parents who want to cut back to one income.

4-0 out of 5 stars Managing your Money and Time
The purpose of this very readable book is to allow a parent to spend more time with their children. The author used her experience in financial journalism to calculate expenses. After surveying more than 100 mothers, she then wrote this book to help other families with young children survive on one income. Most mothers are at home when their children are young. Whatever your reason, this book can help you to spend less on living expenses without pain.

This book has four parts. One) to help you analyze your present financial situation and plan for the future. Two) has hundreds of tips to help you cut spending. Three) shows how to save more while earning less. Four) tells you about work: quitting & keeping benefits, part-time work, and how to resume full-time work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real-Life Strategies for Cutting Back One Income
I've been doing a lot of research on whether or not it will be feasible for me to either quit my job or cut back to part-time. And while I truly appreciate all the books out there about how to clip coupons and make my own granola, this book is different. Ms. Topolnicki gives financial advice on cutting back from two incomes, starting with tax savings and going all the way through to saving on groceries and entertainment. This is serious, real-life stuff. Her chapter on investing alone is worth the price of the book. Taxes, investments, savings, insurance, groceries, vacations, entertainment -- they're all covered and MORE! This is the first book I've read on the subject that gives me REAL hope that I can plan a budget on less than the two incomes we've gotten used to in the past ten years. I can't say enough about this book and the strategies that are outlined therein. Buy it, or borrow it from the library today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, practical advice
Denise has hit the nail on the head. Although everyone will find much they already knew (but might have forgotten), almost everyone will find new insights as well. Denise's straightforward and personal writing style communicates that she's not just making this up, she's telling what she knows from experience. Few people are as well qualified to discuss this subject. If this topic is even slightly of interest to you, you'll want to read this book. ... Read more

Book Description

Drawing on her decades of work with troubled youth and her wide experience with conflict resolution and reconciliatory justice, bestselling parenting educator Barbara Coloroso offers a unique, practical, and compassionate book destined to become a groundbreaking guide to this escalating problem.

Coloroso helps readers recognize the characteristic triad of bullying: the bully who perpetrates the harm; the bullied who is the target (and who may become a bully); and the bystander -- the peers, siblings, or adults who don’t act to defuse the situation.

Readers learn:

  • What bullying is and what it isn’t; the three kinds of bullying; and the differences and similarities between boy and girl bullies
  • Why contempt, not anger, drives bullying
  • Why hazing is a form of bullying and how cliques feed the problem
  • The differences between teasing and taunting and between flirting and sexual bullying
  • How to read the subtle clues that a child is being bullied
  • Four abilities that protect your child from succumbing to a bully
  • Seven steps to take if your child is a bully
  • How to help the bullied child heal; effectively discipline rather than punish the bully; and increase a child’s ability to take positive action
  • Why teaching a "code of compassion" is a more powerful antidote to bullying than conflict resolution techniques
  • Why zero tolerance policies can equal zero thinking
  • How to evaluate a school’s antibullying policy and much more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have book for Manhattan Mothers
I received this book from a friend after having my first baby. I have found the book to be very helpful. I only wish I would have had the book before my baby was born to take advantage of some of the furniture and maternity boutiques listed. This book has been so helpful in finding local clothing/accessories and toy stores as well as child friendly restaurants and activities and parks for me to take my baby. The most important benefit of this book to me has been putting me in touch with a new mothers luncheon in the area where I went on to meet some of my best friends I think I'll ever meet. I would recommend this to any mother and I will definitely buy this for any new mothers that I know in the city. I only wish there was an edition for my friends in Washington DC and San Francisco. Being a new mother is an overwhelming experience and we need all of the help we can get. I think this book is a great resource for everything baby related including nourishing the spirit of the mother.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect baby shower gift
I received City Baby as a gift at my baby shower. It has become an essential part of my backpack. It helped me when I was looking for furniture, selecting a Lamaze class and so much more. It introduced me to playgrounds in my area as well as child-friendly restaurants. I have met new friends at a new mother's group. I would recommend this book to native New Yorkers as well as newcomers like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's like talking to a good friend
Reading City Baby is like talking to a good friend who has already had a baby in New York City and lived to tell about it. The authors of City Baby really did a great job by not just writing a typical list book. They provided the little bits of information that can actually help a new parent be a smart parent. Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for city parents
As someone who is new to New York with a baby, this book has shown me all that I need to know about what to do in NY with a baby. I found all the places to buy a stroller, crib and all. I also was turned on to the New Mothers Luncheons through the book. I also found a really great babysitter through an agency that was listed in City Baby. I think this book is a must have for all New York parents.

1-0 out of 5 stars You can find more info doing research on the internet
I was considering buying this book at the bookstore, but after thumbing through the pages, I could see that there wasn't any information that you couldn't find on the internet by yourself, particularly on urbanbaby.com.
I was most interested in buying this book particularly for the hospital delivery and preschool section (I'm expecting my second one Dec. '03). So I wrote down the website info for one of the hospitals listed, and went home to check it out - no web address found. Also, the preschool section is about 2 pages long - it gave very little advice and guidance on looking for a preschool. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick easy-to-use guide to writing ethical wills
Dr. Barry Baines provides a thoughtful explanation of ethical wills, describing for readers the historical context of the practice and outlining how people today can leave a lasting legacy for their loved ones by putting their values on paper. The guidance he provides in this handbook makes it possible for anyone to write an ethical will, whether they've just learned of the practice or grown up reading ethical legacies of their ancestors. This is an excellent guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview of Ethical Wills
Ethical Wills: Putting Your Values on Paper provides a terrific introduction to ethical wills, with historical background, specific guidelines for writing an ethical will, and a variety of samples. With its reader-friendly tone and clear suggestions, Ethical Wills makes a useful handbook for anyone interested in creating such a document. I especially appreciated the sample wills to show a range of approaches.
This book was a great help to me when I started writing ethical wills. As a member of the Association of Personal Historians, I help others record their own ethical wills and family stories. I keep this book in my professional library and recommend it often.
My only beef? It's too short! I wanted more samples and more history. Guess I'll have to wait for Dr. Baines' next book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to ethical wills.
I found this to be a wonderful guide to ethical wills. As a video biographer I often find that clients wish to speak about their values and beliefs, and tell their loved ones how important they are. This book enabled me to aid my clients with this aspect. The time spent on values is often one of the most touching and commented on parts of the final video. I found out about this book through the Association of Personal Historians, as a member of this group the author has contributed greatly to our knowledge in this area.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Written Legacy
As the creator of a product ... designed specifically for assisting in writing an ethical will, I share the same mission as Dr. Baines. In our world of materialistic accumulation, this book helps an individual realize that the most valuable thing that can be left to heirs is a "love letter." It is heart touching to read the samples of ethical wills which Dr. Baines shares with his readers; especially emotional is the one that the author's own father wrote when he knew he was dying. The book shows that creating a written legacy is a treasure from one's heart, an intangible gift, and can be done by anyone whether rich or poor.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Guide for People of All Ages
While most of us at some time in our lives have thought about the kind of legacy we would like to leave behind, few of us have actually written the words down. How do we want to be remembered? What messages do we want to leave for our families, and the significant people in our lives? Dr. Barry Baines has written an excellent guidebook on how to put these words and thoughts on paper. His writing is straightforward, understandable and filled with humor. More importantly, the book is rich with examples. Dr. Baines has collected "ethical" wills from people of all ages and stages of life. As Dr. Dan Tobin writes in the foreword, ". . .you will find that this book is not only about creating such documents, but about living and aging well." Buy the book today and start putting your values on paper. Your words will be one of the greatest gifts you can bestow on those you love. ... Read more

BOOKS THAT WILL MAKE BOYS WANT TO READ!

Parents, grandparents, teachers, and librarians--we need a tool that guides us to the books that will inspire boys to read and keep them coming back for more. Now Kathleen Odean, a former member of the Caldecott and Newbery Award committees and author of the groundbreaking bestseller Great Books for Girls has compiled and annotated a unique collection of more than six hundred books--picture books, novels, mysteries, biographies, sports books, and more--that will fascinate and educate boys. Here are classic characters such as Frog and Toad, Bilbo Baggins, and Encyclopedia Brown; new favorites such as Bingo Brown, Martin the Warrior, and Harry the Dirty Dog; and real-life inspirations such as the Wright brothers, Jackie Robinson, and Jacques Cousteau.

The boys who discover reading from the books in this invaluable volume will witness a wide range of role models--and embark upon an adventure that will fuel their dreams for the rest of their lives.

1-0 out of 5 stars Some good suggstions, but not boy-centered
Some good recommendations, but I was hoping for more books that would provide great role models for my son. Instead I found many books that seemed to be aimed at teaching diversity - a worthy goal, but surely not the only goal for our sons. I was also disappointed by the number of books about boys with absent or downright rotten fathers.

It's easy today to find poor male role models - they seem to get media coverage at every turn. Ms Odean is right that boys face special challenges; one is being allowed to feel good about being boys and eventually being men. Our sons deserve better...

5-0 out of 5 stars Real boys READ!
According to essay writer Bruce Brooks, he believes that society makes it hard for boys who like to read, especially as they get older. His interpretation is that if boys are reading, they are questioned as to why? and coaxed to engage in other things instead of reading. He doesn't see society treating girls this way when they are reading.

He also states that boys see athletic excellence as widely admired while the love of reading is not. The message to boys is that "real boys don't read."

    The boys' manhood!
Along with her companion book "Great Books for Girls", author Kathleen Odean has compiled an impressive list of suggested reading for boys ages 2 to 14. Odean also feels that as young boys get older they lose their ability to express a wide range of emotions.

    Take Heed Here
She says that "just the way girls are expanding into realms reserved for males, boys need to become competent in long undervalued realms such as creating a warm home, nurturing children and taking responsibility for relationships." Now, I like that statement!

I like the quote she uses from popular writer, educator and author Zinssner. "No other writing lodges itself so deeply in our memory echoing there for the rest of our lives as the books we met in our childhood." . ...MzRizz.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Guide
As a parent and school librarian, I consider this a great guide for boys (and girls). It has the books my son knew and loves--Hatchet, Redwall, Frindle, Matt Christopher--but, best of all, ones he didn't know--Weasel, Dog Friday, Dealing with Dragons, Confess-o-rama. I have to disagree with the review below. You can tell the author of Great Books for Boys is a librarian; her age ranges are right on target, and she gives useful, fairly long descriptions. There's nothing else like this available, so I'm glad this is so good, although I hope she'll bring out a new edition soon like Great Books for Girls has.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Odean doesn't seem to be abreast of the literature for boys -- many of my sons' favorites (and school librarian's picks) were notably absent. In addition, Odean seems to consistently mis-evaluate the reading level of the books she covers. In all, a disappointing resource for parents. I'd like to see a more consistent, researched effort.

4-0 out of 5 stars Misleading
First, I found the book to be valuable and it lists books that boys would benefit from by reading.

But the title "Great Books for Boys" is misleading. Even the introduction, which states that the criteria for selecting books was the books cover "topics that particularly appeal to boys" or they "capture the complexity of boys' lives," is misleading

I was expecting a book analogous to the author's "Great Books for Girls" which included a good number of books where the main character was a female role model. Unfortunately the present book includes relatively few books where the main character was a male role model.

Instead it lists books that would be appropriate for teaching both boys and girls about diversity. (There is also a heavy dose of books covering boys' feeling.) A more accurate title would be "Great Books for Boys and Girls to Learn about Diversity in our World." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For Couples Only
I would agree with the reviews below. This is intended for couples to use together and discuss. That is where the real bonding and intimacy is. I can't say I'm confortable with everything they ask...just one of those quiet unemotional types.

This is good for any couple, but I think the intended audience are for beginning couples, and even better when you are thinking about marriage.

There are many chapters dealing with a relationship topic. It would be good to cover 1-2 a week. This would be a very good couple devotional book to work through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christian Newlyweds: a devotional you'll have time to read!
The pastor who performed our ceremony gave us this book as a wedding gift, and has been a real blessing to us. Newlyweds often face so much change and upheaval that it may be hard to find time to work on the marriage. This book presents a year's worth of content, arranged by topic and meant to be read once a week. The chapters are brief but engaging, and each provides with discussion questions, a verse from scripture, and a story from a couple that relates to the theme. Once readers have finished talking about the content, they are encouraged to think about the week ahead and make plans to help each other in concrete ways.

We've found it to be a nice follow-up to our pre-marital counseling; this book provides on-going discussion and strategies for honoring and loving your spouse.

Note: this book assumes a Christian audience. While the discussions would be helpful for any couple, non-Christian readers should be aware of this orientation before buying the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Discussion Guide
This is the only marriage/relationship book I've been able to make it through - and I look forward to it every week! We take turns reading a chapter to each other weekly, and in addition to the topics being very real to life/couple issues, the discussion questions give you an opportunity to better understand and learn about your spouse. We also like how each week it asks you to select a particular upcoming challenge we'd like our spouse to pray for us about, and a concrete kindness they can offer us - this really gets us in touch with what is going on with the other. Highly recommended!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for every couple who wants to grow spiritually.
This is one of the best devotional books for couples I have come across. It deals with couples beginning their lives together, but it would be beneficial to any couple whose spirituality is important to them. It would make a perfect wedding gift!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great guide to growing together in spiritual intimacy
As a newly married Christian couple, we had trouble finding a devotional for younger couples that dealt with issues we face. This book took a look at the first steps together as a couple in Christ and helped to blend us together into a team. Yet, the book helped us to remember that we are each individuals and to celebrate these differences. We are busy, and creating a time once a week was perfect for this book and our lifestyle. I would RECOMEND this book to anyone, but especially couples in the first ten years of marriage. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A mixed resource
Lots of quotations in this book -- many too short or of dubious distinction to include in a wedding ceremony (do you really want to quote a TV or movie character in your wedding?? I don't). The material unique to this volume seemed as if it would be much more useful as humorous or thoughtful snippets to use in the wedding program or toasts. The poetry and short readings are largely selections that you can find elsewhere (many of them the usual suspects), so the real contribution of this book is in the more popular cultural references mentioned above, if your sensibility tends that way.

The thematic/contextual organization is strong and fairly comprehensive -- covering not only the ceremony, but also other kinds of "words" performed at a wedding, such as toasts. I'd suggest using this book with a more substantive and original anthology, such as Into the Garden.

4-0 out of 5 stars From Romantic to Raucous...
After I read a lot of these type of books in preparation for my own wedding, I selected this one because of its wide range of time periods, subjects, and types of quotes and selections. Words for the Wedding is perfect if you're interested in a good read with lots of fun, inspiring, or romantic shorter selections for incorporating into other places such as programs, favors, personal vows and toasts. I will admit though, that I did not like many of the longer pieces as much as the shorter ones.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really useful
This is a great book; packed with a huge variety of quotes, poems, excerpts. Perhaps my one complaint is that many of the quotes are too short to be used as readings, if that's what you're looking for. But overall the book uses a wide range of creative sources (movies, love letters, poetry, plays, etc.) and will give you lots of ideas and starting points for elements of your own wedding. ... Book Description

This one-of-a-kind primer explains to new parents, in a clear and comforting tone, precisely what is happening inside their new baby's body, the reasons behind various standard post-delivery hospital procedures, and, once baby is at home, what parents can and should do before they call the doctor. In the age of managed care, many pediatricians are unable to find the time to impart even basic medical information--the very information that might reassure parents and help them understand the difference between danger signs and normal development. At the same time, many parents are unable to distill the information they get from the pediatrician, because, even when baby is perfectly healthy, visits to the doctor's office tend to be chaotic and parents may not have their wits about them, may fail to ask the very questions that are on their mind, or may feel reluctant to waste a doctor's time. For any new parent who has left a delivery room or a pediatrician's office with unanswered (and perhaps even unasked) questions, YOUR NEWBORN: HEAD TO TOE will be an essential resource. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best thing you can give to a new or expecting parent!
Boy or girl, first-born or fifth-born, tall or short, twin, triplet, or single, chubby or skinny, whatever ... the parents of newborns will repeatedly themselves, their friends, and their doctor: "Is this something I should worry about? Is this normal? Is s/he healthy?" Finally a pediatrician with experience answering these questions and more has come up with a resource that everyone I know can use to understand if their baby is HEALTHY. Thank you to Doctor Natterson for answering the perennial questions, and for the best book you can give to new or expecting parents, even if they already have a baby (or more). Their family will eventually outgrow it, but only after many consultations, lots of highlighted sections, and scores of marked pages. This book will truly help parents sleep a little better at night during their baby's first year. As much as I hate to share my best gift secrets -- this is the best baby gift ever!

3-0 out of 5 stars Just the basics, very quickly
Although seemingly comprehensive from a glance at the contents, "Your Newborn Head to Toe" presents just the very basics. For example, a discussion of breast- versus bottle-feeding (one of the most critical and controversial questions parents face) uses less than 200 words.

Still, I would recommend the book for those who have neither the time nor the patience to sift through more thorough sources, as Dr. Natterson does give enough information to make quick decisions about paths of action or when to call a physician. Parents who like to feel as informed as possible may wish to turn to another source.

4-0 out of 5 stars A helpful book
This is a straightforward guide that provides information on a vast array of topics. Written by a doctor it covers mainly practical medical facts (the kinds of things that new parents call the pediatrician about, and it actually tells you when you should be calling your doctor or not.) Also helps you figure out the basics of baby care. Includes website references too. I'd recommend a companion to this one called Gentle Baby Care by Pantley (the baby sleep guru) which covers many of the same topics in an A to Z format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Resource
This book is better than any of the other baby books on the market. If you have a question, concern or issue regarding your baby's health, don't panic. This book can help you understand what is going on and what to do about it. It is a must for first time mothers, and a great resource for mothers of toddlers. A perfect gift for all new parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Next Generation What To Expect
Great, lively, well-organized and elegantly structured introduction to fertility, pregnancy and the first year of life. More prescriptive and intuitive than "What To Expect"--less of the kitchen sink and more of the key issues, plus how to deal with them and what to look out for. Author has a stronger feel for the fears and anxieties of new parents. My other favorite baby book is "I Sleep At Red Lights: A True Story of Life After Triplets," by Bruce Stockler, an incredibly fresh, provacative and honest look inside a man's soul when he decides his kids are more important than his career. Hilarious and touching and insightful. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars beautiful wedding decorations and gifts on a small budget
Lots of tips on everything from the engagement party thru wedding party gifts on to the getaway vehicle. There are plenty of nice line drawings which should help the do-it-yourselfer. This book was a bit to frilly(lots of ribbons and bows)for my taste, but if thats your kind of thing, it would be great.

4-0 out of 5 stars You can do it, cheaply
After a lot of research on weddings, I bought this book about a year before my 1996 wedding, and although I never used it for that wedding I kept it because of the ideas that can be used for occasions other than weddings. Biscotti was "hot" at that time, and she has an easy recipe for it to bag and give as gifts. Gift baskets are included as well as something called a "crazy quilt," which looks easy and I hope to attempt one day (mostly to use up all my fabric scraps.)

While some of the other reviewers called it "girly," and I agree, but there are more ideas than most people would use. Mrs. Warner's other books also contain the same types of ideas.

The overblown bridal "industry" will have you believe that if you want a "proper" wedding, spending $10K to $20K is reasonable. It's not. It is NOT necessary to mortgage your future on a one-day event. That kind of money is a degree! Enjoy your day, of course, but don't blow it on a party. Reasonably priced weddings with all the trimmings are possible. I did it, and it was because I did research before I spent a dime.

1-0 out of 5 stars Small budget, HAH!! Maybe for Bill Gates
I don't know where the writer of this book comes from, but it must be from money. There is nothing in this book for a normal bride trying to save money. I would NOT recommend this book for anyone on a budget. It was a total waste of time and money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much hearts and flowers
I have to agree with the previous review; I found the book to be more girly than upscale. Fortunately, I bought the book used, so it wasn't much of an investment. But, yes, if you're looking for "Cinderella", you might find tons of romantic ideas that can keep you within a budget. This book is useful as a starting point, to get your creative juices going. If you're looking for truly unique, memorable, and modern, this book is not for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars I found the book to be a great help for the reception
We created the tulle gazebo that is in the book. Other than adding a few extra touches, we did extacly how it was described. We received many compliments on it. I also did some of the favors, and incorporated some of the idea themes into our ceremony and reception. This book may not be for the "Modern Bride", but it is worth looking at if you are wanting to have a "Cinderella Wedding" without the expense. ... Read more
