5-0 out of 5 stars 49 states are now adopting this Code
Better learn this code. Local codes are being swept away by one standard. Here is Colorado each town had its own test, amendments and licensing system. California is the only state, having revamped its code 2 years ago, to keep its system.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good all-around reference
I primarily work as a structural-architectural engineer and am becoming more and more involved in civil-site work. This handbook is exactly what I was looking for in terms of something that would quickly get me "up to speed" in the fundamentals of civil-site design.
Of course, no single book could (or should) be thought of as a substitute for the experience and mentoring received from seasoned professionals in a design office, but this one has enough technical explanation and details to get you going with confidence.
I choose this one over the Colley book (reviewed both before making purchase) as Land Development Handbook has more of the technical info that engineers would seek.

1-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to follow!
I am in a class at Community College of Baltimore County and we are using this book at this time. Our whole class along with the Professor find this book to be very difficult to follow. The book constantly repeats itself making it extremely boring to read and is not fluent at all. They have examples that reference charts that are 3-5 pages apart from the problem being discussed the formulas you almost have to figure out for yourself how they are used and there are alot of typos.
    I recomend burning this book!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Pub
Ever since I purchased this publication I can't stop using it. Every civil engineer should have this as part of their reference library, regardless of your area of specialty. It provides macro to micro scale explanations of general processes, design applications, etc in a very readable format. More times than I can remember I have looked to this book for an answer or at least for some guidance and was throuroughly satisfied. No it is not a definitive reference for civil engineers but its' breadth and usability overshadows any technical shortcomings. If I had to have just one reference book for my area of practice (general civil), this would be it. Yeah, yeah, the "Standard Handbook for Civil Engineers" is a more definitive reference, but I usually find out what I need in this pub.

ps - Almost everyone of my fellow employees that has used the book has purchased their own, find someone you know who has a copy and check it out for yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, very thourough book
This book covers it all. Although I've never used it for actual design, it covers quite a lot as far as verious issues you may encounter during design. It seems to be geared towards the East Coast. Highly recommended book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Book for the Project Engineer Engaged in Land Development
This book is the first book that really reflects and addresses most of the "everyday" issues encountered in site design and land development. It has a practical application and includes most of the charts, tables and nomographs that are necessary to complete a given design procedure. It also provides very appropriate and helpful examples. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for professionals in disability law and medicine
The 5th Edition is the Rosetta Stone for evaluating permanent impairment. It is invaluable in workers' compensation, where many states, provinces and several countries either mandate its use or treat this work as an authorativie source of impairment evaluation. It may also come to have utility in ADA cases, especially with its emphasis on activities of daily living, and as a predicate to demonstrating the significance or insignificance of an impairment's effect on major life activities after Toyota vs Williams. The vision chapter represents the AMA's first major, published revision to the science and knowledge of eye impairments since the early 1900's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Charts
Although my copy came with 10 pages of errata sheets stuck in the front of it (presumably cured in the 5th version), I still got a lot out of reading through this book. The descriptions of impairment are de regeur reading for coming up with convincing settlement demands for soft tissue injuries. Someone's shoulder hurts? How do you say they have lost 20% of their upper body use as a result? Why not 90% of one finger, 50% of one hand, and 80% of one arm? Multiple impairments like these can be descriptively segmented to more fully elaborate what a patient is feeling, and how they are limited in daily activities. Both the plaintiff bar and the insurance community are well-served by this book. As for the medical accuracy of it, I'll take the AMA's word for it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT INTRODUCTION
Relatively up to date (September 11 and law enforcement reactions, USA PATRIOT Act, etc.), and very informative, this textbook provides an excellent survey of the Criminal Justice System. The prose is streamlined, clear, and somewhat non-biased. Minor corrections may need to be made (e.g. the textbook states that the majority of female sexual assault victims do not know their attacker. . .), but these flaws are minor for a textbook of this scope. The book is extensively source documented, making it perfect for anyone interested in expanding their knowledge of the Criminal Justice System. The CD-ROM and online tools are comprehensive, and give the reader/student a more intimate view of the author's vision.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful text that is very readible
Some texts can be so completely dry, and this one has the potential to be so. Yet this book reads easily, and is kind enough to emphasize much of the text with highlights, boldings, and other wonderful devices to help draw your attention to important details. This book also has a fantastic variety of cases to point out certain aspects of the law. I would definately recommend this one if you are studing the law!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine textbook and great home reference
This book is even better than the excellent business law textbook I used (but no longer have) in college in the late 1960's. It has all the utilitarian features necessary for a textbook but likewise has enough depth and user-friendliness for a home reference tome.

The only significant criticism I can offer is that, for a book in this very high price range, it should have a more durable binding. It does have full cloth-covered hardback covers *but* the page section is only "perfect-bound" (i.e., pages held together merely with glue) rather than having a sewn binding. It seems to me that a ... book should have a sewn binding! I've noticed how most books classified as "textbooks" have such very high prices yet have rather cheap bindings. It's no wonder a college education costs a small fortune these days--- the textbook price alone is enough to drive one into penury, and even then the book(s) will eventually fall apart under very heavy use.

Anyhow, this book is wonderfully useful in its content and for that reason I recommend it highly.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's difficult for self-studying person
I am using several business law textbooks for my self-study.Comparing to others, this book is difficult to understand. The selection of the Cases differs from others which makes me confused.Structure of the content differs too. It's a complicated book to understand for a self-studying person.

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate for the undergraduate college student
After 21 years of teaching, both in private college and law school, and as a 23-year legal practitioner, licensed in Hawaii and New York, I perhaps have too much technical knowledge of the law to pass judgment on a text meant clearly to cover, in an almost glib and obsessively-current fashion, virtually the entire spectrum of the law.

That being said, the text is useful in plowing through the sometimes grandiloquent excesses of law terms and concepts in mostly plain English. Its major flaw is trying to accomplish too much with too little. The multitudinous case decisions are often so short as to reveal little of the policy reasoning behind the law, certainly a key to a would-be manager or businessman. Concepts, when explained, are often truncated, leaving students somewhat bewildered. Coverage of products liability is a case in point -- the question constantly arises: why hold a manufacturer liable without fault? There are correct answers given, to be sure, but they are not fully explained and college students often tend to look at fault rather than economic analysis when a product injures a consumer; the economic concept of strict products liability is hardly an intuitive one, but it is crucial to those students who enter into products manufacture and distribution.

One also wonders why the constitution, criminal law, torts, and such are placed in a business law text. They have minimal relation to the real-world of business and there is just too much information already, even for 2 terms, to cover adequately. I would exclude or minimize these kinds of topics.

Properly the authors have cut back on certain areas which in prior editions constititued perhaps 5+ chapters each. But this is the flip side of the coin. The book is at once too much and too little. At least in our college, this text is used for a course in business law for managers. I'm afraid it is not quite that. Managers need to know what to do when a legal problem, from sexual harassment allegations to a regulatory complaint, comes before them. There is precious little "how" to the practical question of "what do I do now?". In fact, there should be answers to that practical question in every chapter.

There are far too many federal trial court opinions which, frankly, are so new and of so little legal weight (binding only in the particular district), that I wonder why they are included at all in text form, when they can be footnoted, if cited at all. Internet law and "cyberlaw" are cases in point. I realize this is an emerging area in the law, but precisely for that reason, these cases largely have no business being placed in text form until appellate courts have given us broader guidance.

Perhaps I have been too harsh on the text. It is well-written, understandable, generally clear to the college student, and may well be the best general text for undergraduates. But I would like to see much more progress made in the areas I have discussed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Law Textbook - Very Useful Out of School as Well
West's Business Law is amazing for the student of business law. It presents complicated subject matter in a way that can be understood. After reading it, I felt "everyone should read this book," because it applies to so many situations we could face in everyday life. It provides a more in-depth and overall law presentation than most college text books. If you hunger for knowledge of the law (whether you want to be a lawyer or not), you will be filled by the material in West's Business Law. My husband has a business law class right now which uses another textbook and there is no comparison. I only regret that I lost my West's Business Law when I was moving, because it is one textbook I had wanted to keep forever. ... Read more

Bennett-Alexander and Hartman's, Employment Law for Business, 4/e, addresses law and employment decisions from a managerial perspective. It is intended to instruct students on how to manage effectively and efficiently with full comprehension of the legal ramifications of their decisions.Students are shown how to think and analyze employment law facts using concrete examples of management-related legal dilemmas without clear-cut solutions. The methods of arriving at resolutions are emphasized, so that when the facts of the workplace problem are not quite the same, the student can still reach a good decision based on the legal considerations required by law, which remain relevant. ... As an attorney, manager, and teacher of human resources professionals, I recommend this book. I found that thie information was thoroughly researched. I also appreciated that the legal information was presented in a business context so that managers who are not lawyers could understand the information and readily appy it to real life workplace problems.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useful Book.
This is an interesting, informative and useful book. I used it for school and it will be one book that I keep. Great case studies.

2-0 out of 5 stars Employment Law
I think the book is so liberal and it advocate large government. Freedom is not through following the forced laws like affirmative action, ADA, etc. but having a choice especially in employment. Employer should have the say on what they want and who they want to work and not work. The book pretty much tells you that this is the law and its good for you ,so follow or else.
    That is socialistic.
We are giving more power to the government to tie us down with more laws and regulation. Their responsibility is to protect the citizens and not to do business. That's for the private sector.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for in the class and in the office
This book gives a good comprehensive look at the mountain of law and regulations encountering employees in both the public and private sector. The examples in the beginning of each chapter are very useful as well as the actual cases used to exemplify how the law has been applied to real-world situations.

1-0 out of 5 stars So much for objectional literature
The author of this book had a clear agenda, and made it very clear what her opinions were. I for one am tired of having liberal agenda's crammed down our throats no matter what school I attend. As for the material in the book, well she did a good job if putting every case in the world into one book, but there was no substance in between, just opinion, which I for one do not care for, expecially this politically correct one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not Only For Students
I am using this textbook in several of my classes, and let me just say- it has everything I could have hoped for. The chapters are laid out well, many cases are cited, and the student is given actual cases to figure out, with the citations given at the end so he can find the actual outcome. I've found this to be among the best textbooks. It is so good, in fact that I've reccomended it to several of my friends who are going into business for themselves. This covers nearly everything they'll need to know regarding contracts, secured transactions, warranties, etc.
    Love the law!

5-0 out of 5 stars Business Law Today by Jentz et al.
This is an excellent text. It incorporates the law, as well as
legal research methodologies. For instance, a standard chapter
contains an outline, common law sources, constitutional,
statutory and administrative laws/rule-making. The work cites
computerized legal research in WESTLAW and LEXIS. Relevant
international legal citations are listed. The applicable
United States Code is cited by Title and specific paragraph.
In some cases, individual state legal codes are cited. There
are exhaustic sets of historical and statutory notes, cross
references and federal practice notes. Each chapter has a
comprehensive case study with a brief synopsis, cited case
and final disposition. There are teaching suggestions at the
end of the instructor's manual together with discussion
questions, research assignments and an explanation of footnotes.
In addition, there is an exhaustive section on essay question

    Here is a model answer:
Stare decisis is a doctrine that prescribes following earlier
judicial decisions in deciding a current case if the facts and
questions are similar. Courts attempt to be consistent with their
own prior decisions and with the decisions of courts superior
to them. Stare decisis is important because part of the function
of law is to maintain stability. If the application of the law
was unpredictable, there would be no consistent rules to follow
    and no stability.

The volume has detailed coverage of the following areas:
    o Business Ethics o Int'l Business Law
o Employee Rights o Employment law
o Occupational safety o Accounting and the law
o Securities o Mergers and acquisitions
    o Insurance o Real Estate
o Financial institutions o Unfair competition
    o Advertising o Environmental law
o Health Care o Sports and entertainment
    o Hospitality management o Communications

    5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd edition
I found Carolyn Buppert's second edition of Business Practice and Legal Guide to be very helpful. The additional chapters are useful for my practice and for research on a state wide level. I would recommend this book to nurse practitioners and students of the profession. It is proving to be a valuable resource for improving NP practice in Alabama. Be sure to get the second edition (2003/2004)as the first was published in 1995.

1-0 out of 5 stars Information is outdated
As a grad student interested in starting my own practice upon graduation, I found this book to be useless. It has been reprinted by another publishing company and its original copyright date is 1999. Between then and now - 2004 - a lot of things have changed. Therefore, I would recommend that anyone who requires current information should look elsewhere. This is a very expensive book as is not helpful at all!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for any nurse practitioner
I had the pleasure of reading this book while finishing my last year in nurse practitioner school.

Ms. Buppert is a master in defining how to negotiate business contracts.

I met the author at a nurse practioner conference in Nashville Tn and she was very down to earth and truly magnificent in her knowledge of laws affecting nurse practioners.

    I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, helpful
This book is a great way to access state-by-state information related to NP practice. I do recommend that readers not solely rely on its information. They should still contact each state's board of nursing. I found discrepancies between Ms. Buppert's requirements for practice in Ohio and actual law.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to both NP students and clinicians. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Iannone ranks #1 on list of police stressors.
Ugh! This book is awful. I also don't know anyone else who feels differently. It is required reading for Lt/Sgt. exams even though there are usually only a few questions related to the material. I think whoever writes the exams that way after requiring this book must be a sadist who hates cops. Or maybe is just concerned about insomnia from rotating shifts because this book can put you to sleep in a half a page. Who needs a doctor? Just read Iannone. I am sure there must be some very good factual or theoretical information in the book - otherwise it wouldn't be as well known as it is. (I sure hope so and its not simply that Iannone married the sister of some official who has sway over these things. Gotta love law enforcement.) Then again, there are also things in the book that are impractical at best. I can't tell you how to score high on the exam and it doesn't matter because a high score doesn't mean you will be a good supervisor and that is what is most important - will your cops follow you - happily? Read Iannone but start studying profiles in great leaders and look within your own department to those supervisors who hold the respect and confidence of the cops and just as you did while a rookie, cultivate these examples and merge your own style into them. Look to present leadership but don't fashion yourself as a clone - so much of the success of our work depends on our authenticity as people, try to be someone else and everyone will detect that immediately. #1 rule of success and safety - have an unwavering respect for yourself and unwavering belief in yourself. So, I think that Ianonne should grab a successful writer and let them form the concepts into sentences. Then we would have the best of him without the droning. But if they have to pay this person - what would the price go to then? Good luck on the test. Stay safe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally made it
Can't believe some of the comments on this book. This book was great but you must get the HLC Study Guide for it. I took the Sergeant's test 3 times before I score well (93)and got my stripes. The study guide made all the difference. It puts all the material in the book into your memory banks so it all makes sense at test time. Do yourself a favor, and get the study guide to go with this book.(I'am currently re-reading this book and guide for the Lieutenants test in the morning). GOOD LUCK

2-0 out of 5 stars Cliffs notes
Any one who has to read this book for a class or promotional exam; please call the Cliffs Notes company and ask them to write a Cliffs notes booklet for this book. The authors should take their own advice found on pg 83 and avoid aimlessness in the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good... But not that good
This book is yet another one in the annals and the pursuit of spending an inordinate of of money for promotion. It is definetely full of information. However, it is hard to read and seems to possess a never ending amount of run-on sentences. It is not black and white, as a promotional book should be.
The book is put together better than its predecessor and is somewhat easier to read. I would suggest purchasing the study guide that is available. It will more than prepare you for a test that includes this book as part of the reading list.
Good Luck and always remember where you came from, once you get promoted!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Just a horribly boring book.....
The author takes a 100 page book and turns it into a 350 page novel. Most of the information given is dry and oversimplified. The author constantly rehashes everything he can to make the book longer than it needs to be. As a long time supervisor, there was nothing at all I gained in knowledge that applies to the job. Urge your Chief or civil service board to NOT use this book on any supervision test. ... Read more

Pozgar's book is organized by legal topic and cites relevant case law in all instances. It is an excellent overview of American law as it applies to the health care practitioner or organization. He has taken a topic that it difficult to communicate and made it very enjoyable reading. Students will find it much easier reading than most graduate level texts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great information for those new to health care law.
This book was very useful to me. I am a health information management student planning to enter a graduate health administration program. I took the class and this particular book was the text. Our instructor is a lawyer and runs risk management at our university hospital. The text further explained basic legal priciples and related them to health care. The text is easy to read and gives several references to actual documents. ... Read more

    Book Description

Professors Fischl and Paul explain law school exams in ways no one has before, all with an eye toward improving the reader's performance. The book begins by describing the difference between educational cultures that praise students for "right answers," and the law school culture that rewards nuanced analysis of ambiguous situations in which more than one approach may be correct. Enormous care is devoted to explaining precisely how and why legal analysis frequently produces such perplexing situations.

But the authors don't stop with mere description. Instead, Getting to Maybe teaches how to excel on law school exams by showing the reader how legal analysis can be brought to bear on examination problems. The book contains hints on studying and preparation that go well beyond conventional advice. The authors also illustrate how to argue both sides of a legal issue without appearing wishy-washy or indecisive. Above all, the book explains why exam questions may generate feelings of uncertainty or doubt about correct legal outcomes and how the student can turn these feelings to his or her advantage.

In sum, although the authors believe that no exam guide can substitute for a firm grasp of substantive material, readers who devote the necessary time to learning the law will find this book an invaluable guide to translating learning into better exam performance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book on law school test taking and legal thinking
What most surprised me about this book was that I found it fascinating reading. It is doubtless extremely helpful for anyone facing a law school exam, particularly in the first year, but it is equally valuable, perhaps more valuable, for anyone CONSIDERING GOING TO LAW SCHOOL. I would be surprised if anyone reading this book didn't gain both an advantage on their law school exams and a better understanding of what the legal system is all about. I learned a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading for All Law Students!!
Getting to Maybe should be required reading on every law student's list! The authors take the mystery out of writing great law school exams. They tell you what the professor wants, and how to deliver that message. I wish I had had this book in law school. I spent the better part of 3 years wondering which coins the professors flipped to give grades. This book also is helpful for anyone taking a bar examination. The investment of $19.95 is a great deal!

5-0 out of 5 stars The way to pass the law school exam.
This book saved my law school carreer. law school tests are notoriously ambigous. There are no right answers. Unfortunatly, there seems to be no help for students. One of the proscribed methods is the IRAC method (when you get to school you will learn this and this is not the time to write about it). This book gives you a different way of acheving success in the test. The book does criticize IRAC and offers its own way of handling the testing questions. "Getting To Maybe" is written by law professors and who would know more about passing their tests as well as how a professor thinks? The book is a well written philosophy on the test and the mistakes. The authors spend a great deal of time explaining their philosophy and it is helpfull for the second half of the book. The book shows the common test question mistakes and how to fix them. The book also provides sample tests with sample answers and explanations of why they are good answers. This is the best part of the book, a side by side comparison of good and bad answers which makes this book invaluable. Highly reccommended.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A Blessing
Who better to get advice on law exams from than two law professors, who also graduated at the top of Harvard Law's class? My grades have gone up and up since reading (and re-reading) this book. Anyone who goes to law school, especially where competition for grades is tight will benefit. The more you read it, the more you grasp the strategy. So don't get discouraged if you're a bit confused the first time. I'd recommend reading through this before you enter law school and at least once (maybe twice) a semester as you can squeeze in a few extra minutes. I've looked at every book about legal reasoning and taking law exams that I've been able to get my hands on and this book has the best system by far. It might not be the easiest system to understand (after all the easy road isn't always the best road in law school), but once you grasp it you'll be thankful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Maybe may not be enough
I gave this book two stars for its discussion on addressing policy issues on the exam--this was helpful, indeed. It also gives good tips and provides answers to frequently asked questions on how to prepare--but this is standard advice you'll hear in any law school. Does this book provide a concrete strategy on handling a law school exam? No. In sum, it describes what is wanted on an exam, but doesn't come close to adequately showing students how to get to this "maybe." You are on your own... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book of Business Law
I bought this book a week ago. I am a foreign-educated lawyer and I have decided to compare Business Law of my country with Business Law in USA (learned at the US colleges and universities). I was pleasently suprised and also very satisfied with this buy. I appreciate very much the complete coverage of business law topics - especially integration of ethics, social responsibility, economics, historic issues into the presentation of business law topics as well as international topics. The book is written using clear language without problems of understanding as well as for non-native English readers. It was a perfect idea to include TOTALAW CD-ROM which provides access to 30 updated acts and statutes. I appreciate it. I would say the book worth its price and I highly recommend it to everybody who is in any connection with business law. I thank the author for unbelievable excellent work on this third edition of Contemporary business law book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes me feel smarter!
I am desk jockey who does electrical design work. I have little in-the-field electrical experience. I use the NEC codes frequently to make sure what I design is code-compliant. I have a copy of the standard 1999 NEC book and found many parts of it difficult to interpret. This new "handbook" version has answered all of the questions and uncertainties I had about the code. It has an illustration and explanation for just about every question I could think of. Even when I don't need a certain thing, I have found myself leafing through the book just to learn more.

I would recommend this to anyone, but especially engineer types or those who are inexperienced. I feel much more confident about my job and I don't have to ask electricans those questions that make you feel stupid anymore. Even master electricians will appreciate the explanations of code changes from the 1999 version. Overall, I can't recommend this book more, well worth the $50 or so more than the standard NEC book.

If you hang around with fellow homeowners, there's a lot of water cooler conversation about various things, including the electrical code. Want to figure what gauge of cable to use to supply it? Want to know how to calculate the in^3 fill of a box? How deep to bury an underground cable? How to use raceways? That information totals about 1/4 of 1% of the contents of this book. ... Read more
