2-0 out of 5 stars Messy tapes on easy subject
At first, I was afraid of agency & partnership, then later I realized that these subjects are covered already in torts and corporations courses. This lecture series is long even though the material is quite simple. I have two problems with this product. There are four tapes on agency and partnership, respectively. First, for each subject the professor spend three tapes telling the rules and then the last tape saying, "Okay, now here are the rules from the new Restatement." They should have said the most updated rules from the start. Second, (and please forgive the age-ism here), the back cover shows the Munch is an older gentleman. When you listen to the tapes, you will learn that he has an old man's voice. Whereas other tapes have younger people cracking jokes because they know many of these law subjects are tedious, here you have the kind of old professor that will make you go to sleep. Again, please forgive the unintended courseness of that observation. But honestly, his voice will be an impediment to listening to this series. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars disapointing
The book was disapointing. Material is not organized by the level of difficulty. Very simple sentences and phrases are placed next to gramaticly advanced ones.
"Grammar notes" provide a few very basic grammar rules and are inadequate for the level of gramatical dificulty of many sentences.
The majority of the patient interview questions and recomended phrases are either irrelevant or simply inappropriate.
Buy this book if you want to learn the names of the body parts in Spanish, but do not expect much else of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book/cassette crash course for health workers
There are at least three books on the market for health care workers who wish to learn enough spanish to help their Latino patients. I have all three and think that this is the best one. The others have many dialogues and phrases that are simply unrealistic and would never need to be known by a nurse or a doctor. You end up wasting your time learning phrases that you will never use. This book (be sure to get the cassettes also as they have all of the essential phrases so you can practice your pronunciation) has words and phrases which mirror reality. This is information you can really use. It is amazing how much you can pick up with just a few hours of study. Well worth the price!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Spanish for HealthCare
The book, casette, and pocket guide, as a set provide above basic Spanish language available to study and use at work. I have had 2 years of spanish at the college level, this book is advanced enough to be helpful. The pocket guide is portable, and you can quickly look up the area of the body the person is having trouble with. Unfortunately, it cannot keep stressed out parents and children from speaking so rapidly or excitedly to always catch what they are communicating back. If you know some spanish, this set helps as a crutch to get through an initial assessment. ... Read more

    Book Description

The words you use say a lot about you. Some words say that you are smart, persuasive, and informed. Others say that you don't know what you're talking about. Knowing which words to use and how to use them are keys to getting the most from your mind and to communicating effectively.

Based on the best-selling book, Word Smarton cassette will help you learn the words you absolutely need to know. To find these words, the Princeton Review researched the vocabularies of educated adults. It analyzed newspapers like the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, books from best-sellers to the classics, and standardized tests like the SAT and GRE. The words included in this interactive program are those that appear most frequently and are often misused or misunderstood.

    Here's what Word Smart includes:

  • words grouped by subject
  • concise, accurate definitions
  • lively, humorous examples and stories to illustrate meanings
  • mnemonics (memory devices) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good source of must-know words
As always Word Smart is a great way to study for the SAT, GRE, and standardized tests. These 800+ words not only help you do good on standardized tests but also enrich your vocabulary for everyday conversations. I especially found the pronunciation keys for every word very useful. It doesn't really make you look very smart if you mispronounce a word does it? I found it really funny that books never gave you pronunciations and was so pleased when I finally saw them in Word Smart. The sentence examples are also a great way to learn how to use these words and Adam's humor definitely shows up in some of them:) The word root list and GRE hit parade were also very helpful.

I recently got a score of 700 on my verbal section of the SATs. A large part of the reason was Word Smart. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was because I feel that you need to also purchase Word Smart II to get all the words that you absolutely need to know for the SATs. There are also some words in this book that are way too easy. Come on, ironic? Who doesn't know what that means. Otherwise this book is a must-buy for anyone taking the SATs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for SAT, GRE or TOEFL Preparation
This book contains 800+ words, which may not seem like a high number, but, those words will very likely appear on the GRE, SAT or TOEFL. Why? Because the testmakers test words that are commonly misused. For example, many people do not know the distinction between 'libel' (false written statements) and 'slander' (false spoken statements). Without knowing the subtle distinctions of words, you'll lose points on standardized tests which test vocabulary. Word Smart points out the commonly misused words and how those words are misused. Word Smart also provides interesting sample sentences to help you understand the context in which a word should be used, unlike the boring, somewhat useless sample sentences often found in dictionaries.

If you purchase this book, do all the matching quizzes which will greatly assist your vocab memorization.

4-0 out of 5 stars I prefer IPA symbols.
One thing I personally don't like about this book is that they use their own pronunciation keys instead of IPA symbols.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective
Very good book for International students preparing for TOEFL/GMAT/GRE
I used when I was taking my GMAT. I knew about 25% of the words that it had such as prolific or excentric but there were some good ones that I still remember such as vociferous and verdant. I found it very helpful to use during short periods of time when I would have a few minutes between meetings or in the public transportation on the way home. Generally, a very pleasant book. It has good white paper and each words has a full page. Remebering was easy too, but forgetting was not hard. Sometimes I caught myself that I would remember the picture but would not remember the definition. In any case, this is a much faster way to learn words than mere memorizing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Make use of your commute time
If you are like me, then you have a significant commute in addition to your normal work day. If you also happen to be studying for the CCNA test, then you should definitely get yourself a copy of this set of audio tapes, and listen to them in the car while you ride to work and back. These tapes (4 of them, lasting about 4 hours) cover all of the main points on the test. Topics parallel the CCNA Exam Cram book, and cross-references are offered when useful. The last tape of the set has a short topic review followed by 60 or so questions and answers that are typical of the CCNA 640-507 test.

Please note: do not expect this set of tapes to be the only material that you will need to pass the test. Cisco tests are significantly more difficult than any Novell or Microsoft test that you may have taken in the past. You will need to read and understand all of the material in the Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices (ICND) book, as well as all of the material in the Internetworking Technology Handbook to have any hope of passing. Think of this set of tapes as a good use of otherwise wasted time that you will spend in the car commuting to work. Used properly, these tapes are a valuable addition to your other study material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent companion to Exam Cram CCNA Book
This is a must have if your studying for the CCNA exam and work long hours. Great to use in the car or working out. The information helps reinforce what you already have learned and helps to tie in certain subjects that are vague. Great learning tool. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should listen to the tape! (or read the book)
I've listened to 2 of the six tapes of Emotional Genius: How Emotions Can Save Your Life & it's wonderful.

She says we are made up of 4 "parts" that should all be equal: intelligence, feelings, body, spirit. (She calls them fire, water, earth & air which bothers me a little but not too much.) The four parts form a fifth, You. After the second tape, I kept trying to picture my four parts forming one. I now see me as a 4-headed, 4-bodied conjoined quad! But it loosened up my feelings a bunch. Had terrible nightmares, but they didn't make my heart pound & sweat. Just like she says, the other parts help process the feelings.

She's religious in that she believes in God, but doesn't preach. Also referred to other names.

If you don't think people can communicate with animals, the beginning might bother you.

She is a "survivor" (I prefer the word "Victor") of child sexual molestation. Makes me feel good as to how Whole she has become.

She compares what she believes with other "systems" and she says they are trying to make you just feel the "good" feelings, not the "bad" feelings, but both type can be and are healthy for you in some instances. And that contrary to some spiritual teachings, Judgment IS good. Not Judgment of others, but Judgment if something or someone or some belief is good for you, ie don't let someone else tell you to only believe what they say. Think & feel for yourself.

And that's only in two tapes! Actually, 1 1/2 since I haven't listened to the second part of the second tape.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST i've EVER LISTENED TO ON EMOTIONS
I've read so many non-fiction books that this past year when I was searching for a fiction book, I had to ask a clerk what section they were in! (Literature, how was I to know?!)

I started out with the two tape series "Becoming an Empath", then bought these tapes along with every book Karla has written.

So did both of my friends!

This is THE best book and tapes series from every angle. It is sequenced just right, you feel like you're covering the material without feeling lost or bored. It's written in laymen's terms, like your best friend is describing the confusing world of emotions. I was so impressed with Karla's work that I flew to Colorado to attend her workshop, and no I've never done that before! (especially two months after 9-11)

Now I can't wait for Karla to come to the East Coast. Karla is just like your friend next door. She will not allow you to put her on a pedestal and she truly shares her 'emotional genius' like a best friend...

5-0 out of 5 stars Emotional Genius: How Your Emotions Can Save Your Life
We all have emotional genius...the question is: How do we access and use it to balance and center ourselves in our day to day life? Karla McLaren has an amazing gift for answering that question. Her answer...and ours...comes from her own experience of trauma and loss. These tapes clearly explain not only the importance of balancing our four elements of being--physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional--but also teach us to be the "essential fifth element" that sits in the middle of this "quaternity," ready to bring back health, logic, stability and faith in place of fear and anxiety.

Karla tells the story of her own she developed the tools from her own experience for deliverance from anxiety, fear, and even suicidal urges. She teaches us to use these tools to find wholeness through balance, centering, and groundedness.

Because we see emotional people as weaklings and almost useless, it's important to understand that these tapes take us through every emotion and show us how to gain strength and self-awareness from acknowledging each emotion as it appears in our lives. Each emotion has a purpose in expressing itself, and Karla gives us a way to find out its purpose and its saving property. Balanced with the other parts of our being, it's a guideline for finding and keeping our true selves alive.

Because I find these tapes the most powerful and the clearest in comparison to all the many tapes and books I've read over 30 years, I would like to follow the "Tape Contents" to give a rundown of the topics discussed. If I could buy only one set of tapes, I would definitely choose these, as they have given me a way to access my total self, and to check in each morning and throughout the day to see if I'm staying balanced and protected with my aura in place and my grounding cords attached.I can feel my energy being restored when I get grounded and centered. At the end of the day, there's a way to rid myself of stored up tension. I've probably made a simple process sound difficult, but whether you've had trauma in your life or just feel that something is missing, awaken your whole and true self by working with these tapes....

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and evocative--PURE GENIUS!
This tape series is packed with powerful and evocative wisdom about the emotions and the healing energies they carry within them.

I used to hide from my dark emotions like anger and suicidal urges. But McLaren's words have given me the ability to work with those emotional states and to find their inherent healing power. Her process of "channeling" the emotions rather than relying on repressing or violently expressing them, has indeed changed my perspective on life and how I relate to those around me.

As always, I found the quality of Sounds True's production to be excellent. They always seem to showcase the most brilliant and dynamic speakers and topics. This series is a tremendous example of their craft. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the cash
Great tool for studying for the MCAT. I listened to the tapes over and over and I actually could recall all of it while I was taking the exam, (especially the physics). It is a little expensive but after taking the exam I realize it was money very well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars MCAT Audiolearn is the best tool for getting into Med School
These tapes are the best way to really understand the information needed to excel on the MCAT. I was amazed with the amount of information I was able to retain and understand by just listening to these tapes. They are very well organized too. I think this is a great way to solidify the information needed to do really well on the MCAT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Way more useful than the other MCAT audio program!
I own this and another MCAT audio review and to be perfectly honest, you will learn and retain alot more useful information from this one. It highlights the things that actually appeared on the exam. It is more focused, to the point and without a lot of distracting noises and korny jokes that only aggitate an inquisitive mind. The disadvantage of this package is the fact that its on cassette tapes, but visitng their website I noticed that a CD version is on the way. My advice to all premeds is dont waist your money on an MCAT course, you'll get more than you bargained with this package.

2-0 out of 5 stars A pseudo-learning tool that is behind the modern technology.
For the amount of money you pay, it isn't really worth it. There is no booklet to go along with the tapes, and they cover very shallow level of the subjects. Plus, in this age of CD's and DVD's, these audio tapes are archaic, and if you want to focus your study on certain sections, you will spend most of your time fast forwarding or rewiding the tapes.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Get What You Pay For!!!!
Great product, especially if you don't have enough time to sit down and read. A little pricey but well worth a high score on the MCAT. My advice is listen to it a couple of times and you'll see the amazing results. BEST OF LUCK!! UCLA Class of 2002 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for All Americans--not just history buffs
This is the very best audio tape I've ever listened to. While some interviews are better (Stephen Ambrose) than others (Richard White), each one offers important insight and perspective on the most important events of our time. Through the eyes of these men, our nation's history is told so clearly and succinctly, and with such passion, that you can't help but be changed and moved by the experience. I guarantee you'll come away with a better grasp of who we are and where we're headed as a nation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy U.S. History on the Ears
This audiobook is an excellent addition to the U.S. history-buff's glove compartment. There are basically four tapes of interviews by Roger Mudd done for the History Channel. Mudd asks questions to the featured historians and they respond with stories and factoids to keep you thinking. I can listen to them many times and still learn things that I didn't catch the last time around. This is also a great way to brush up on your U.S. history while enriching what you already know. ... I have been teaching ESL for 15 years, and Barron's How to Prepare for the TOEFL test is not only the best book for students planning to take the TOEFL, but also for intermediate level students who need to add structure to their learning of grammar, and develop their vocabulary. A very interesting text to work with.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE NUMBER ONE
I've already read the book How to prepare for the new toefl test by Pamela Sharpe, I've not found a better book of toefl preparation until now. at the begining of the book it looks difficult to adapt to the way it is structured but as the days are passing by you notice that the way in which She made the book is the best to have a quick reference while you're answering the excercises of "structure and writen expression", I dont know the author but in my opinion is a person extremely intelligent. The excercises are ordered on a methodic way that I've never seen before in other toefl books that present their teachings so clear. I never before had taken classes of grammar but I feel that the book has help me very much. I've read a 70% of the book and in my opinion is the best.

I think i got everything from this book.I learnt test tactics to get good score and the book helps me to take model tests and to improve my score. Got confidence that definitely i get good score. REALLY GREAT BOOK !!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For talking to Spanish speaking patients
A blurb on the front of William Harvey's _Spanish for Health Care Professionals_ notes that this book is designed for communicating with people whose only language is Spanish. This book is also designed for people who have little or no skills in Spanish to learn something of that language.

The first chapter, which is entitled "Basic Information," introduces the reader to the Spanish alphabet, so that the reader may learn how to pronounce Spanish words, and to some basic expressions such as "Good morning" and "How are you?"

In subsequent chapters the reader learns the names for the parts of the body, some terms/phrases for admission into a hospital, some terms/phrases for an accident scene, and some terms/phrases for a pregnancy. These chapters are followed by three more which teach terms/phrases according to three hypothetical patients of varied ages. At the end of the book is what the writer called a word/expression finder,an English/Spanish and a Spanish/English dictionary.

However the reader should be aware that the terminology discussed is limited in its depth. A quick comparison of this book with _First Responder_ by David Schottke and others shows that terms such as "abdomen" and "anaphylactic shock" are not covered by William Harvey's book. Even so, as the front cover blurb said, this book should be very useful to people who have little or no skills in Spanish when speaking to Spanish speaking patients.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just okay
Reviewed by one of the professional Spanish-language interpreters at a major medical facility. Not organized very well; too confusing. There are better products, so this one is not recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the student in you
I am a medical resident and recently bought William Harvey's "Spanish for Health Care Professionals". A wonderful way to learn phrases and basic Spanish skills to communicate with a Spanish-speaking patient. I would recommend this tutorial for anyone willing to put in the time to begin learning another language. It will help you be a better health care provider for a sometimes-underserved patient population.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Self-Learning Resource for Health Care Providers
This book is not intended to be a quick reference guide - it's meant to be an instructional tool, and is a very good one. If you're a motivated learner and you have some time to devote to studying Spanish, this is a great way to start. I started off a few years ago using William Harvey's First Edition of this book, which was really helpful, but this updated version is even better. It addresses several different types of diagnoses, treatments, and procedures, and uses gender/age-specific scenarios to teach vocabulary and new tearms. Beside each new Spanish word, you get the phonetic pronunciation in English, which is very helpful to keep you from botching the pronunciation of Spanish words. The author goes the extra mile in giving you little "Notas" about Hispanic culture and how it impacts health care. This book has been incredibly helpful to me as a health care provider. I highly recommend it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for quick reference.
This book is very good for assessment and admission questions. It goes system by system and gives you translations.

It is not for quick reference when speaking to a patient. I find it frustrating to look through the book when I want to ask a simple question, or need to give a bit of information. I have found myself using translation software on the WWW when communicating with Spanish speaking patients and their families as opposed to using this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
I thought this book was fantastic!!! It has clear explanations of the sometimes complex and confusing facets of English pronunciation. It gives a lot of ideas on how to present phonology in an interesting, communicative, and meaningful way. It is one of the best books in the ESL field that I have ever read. The 17 appendices included in the book are very useful. I commend the authors and highly recommend this book to any teacher of pronunciation.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected
This book is definatly not what I expected. I wanted to increase my awareness of the English pronunciation rules in order to help me to be able to teach the subject more effectively. However, the book seems to be designed for students of speech pathology. It is more concerned with explaining complicated linguistical terms, which are of little or relevance to a regular ESL/EFL classroom teacher. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best cassette tape
This is the fourth tape I had, but it is the only one that I like. The tape explains words and presents several usages. The other tapes were (1) very annoying because they containing too much useless, annoying dialogue and few new words or (2) not helpful because the definition and usage were poorly crafted.

If you prefer useless chatting between annoying people, try Word Smart II; you will spend very long time listening to their uninformative conversation. If you simply want to learn as much words in a short period of time, get this set of tape.

2-0 out of 5 stars Informative but boring
After the first 10 min or so, I can no longer give my full attention to what I hear. Not possible to really remember all the words while many words are not used in the real world.Nice to know but will forget soon enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Education Value
I found the Verbal Advantage tapes extremely interesting and fascinating. The author includes the etymology (a word I learned) with many of the words. This teaches many interesting historical facts most people are unaware of. He also does much more than "read from the dictionary".He explains the correct pronunciation, correct usage, synonyms, antonyms, and etymology.Over and above the fascinating vocabulary discussions, he talks about common errors people make in day-to-day conversation. He talks about redunancy, overused words and incorrectly used words.Mr Elster has a very good, interesting voice that he uses with great enthusiasm for the subject. So if you are interested in becoming "erudite", and want your writing to be more "perspicacious", these are the best tapes you can buy!

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
From their advertisement pitch ("a program that feeds words effortlessly into your memory... you'll be able to use hundreds of new words in hours..."), one would think that they'd used some cutting edge psychology techniques (such as NLP, conditioning, etc) to aid your learning. But you'll be disappointed when you discover that the author did little more than reading from the dictionary.

Here's the format for every word on the tape:1) author reads the vocabulary2) he spells it3) reads the definition and sometimes the origin of the word4) reads the synonyms and sometimes antonyms (which he did not bother to spell. So if you didn't know the synonyms to being with, you can't even look them up in a dictionary)5) often he gives some example of usage.

With exception of #5 above, there's nothing you can't get from reading the dictionary like Rain Man does.At least, when you read from a dictionary, you don't have to keep rewinding the damn thing to catch the synonyms you missed.

Each verbal advantage set comes with 2 tapes. The author spent half of the 1st tape introducing the program, telling you why you should learn vocabularies. He then spent half of the 2nd tape explaining how to read from a dictionary.Okay, so you say "I don't know why I should learn more words and I never used a dictionary before."You'll be surprised when you open Verbal Advantage level 2, and discovers the EXACT same repetition of the introduction and how to read dictionaries.

You might learn a lot of other things from these tapes... but you definitely will not learn a lot of new words. ... Read more

Millions of adults and children are discovering that the reason they can't seem to get organized, stop procrastinating, sit still, pay attention, and finish what they started is not a lack of self-discipline but, rather, an inborn neurological condition: Attention Deficit Disorder, or ADD.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first book to be included in your ADHD library
Dr. Hallowell & Dr. Ratey have written two books that are considered the gold standard of material on the subject of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This book, and its predescessor Driven To Distraction, share equally in providing the basics about the disorder in children, and adults. The format is easy to read and gives people who are new to understanding the disorder an overview of what it feels like to be ADHD. The chapter on Anger, "The gemlike flame", will take you step by step on how the ADD mind processes an incident that results in frustration and temper outbursts. Only from working with hundreds of people could Hallowell & Ratey detail this information in such an understandable format. In fact, this is the book that allowed me to be diagnosed with ADHD as a 36 year old adult, even though I had been diagnosed "hyperactive" as a young child back in the seventies when it was assumed the disorder went away with the onset of puberty!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Step in the Right Direction
This tape along with it's predecessor Driven To Distraction are must "reads". Like many others that are faced with the fact that they have ADHD or ADD, I too have difficulty getting through an entire book that is so full of information. But this audio version was a savior for me. I am a firm believer in books on tape and these ones helped me learn about myself so fully that it brought tears to my eyes (thankfully I wasn't driving at the time). I have two sons that have been diagnosed with ADD and have made marked improvement in school since we found out and started treating them. But these tapes helped me focus on the fact that I too suffer from the disorder and how it has channelled my life through the years. I would whole heartedly reccommend these tapes for anyone that has an interest in these disorders, from teachers to parents to sufferers like myself. Also the books by Russell A Barkley, he is a VERY thoughtful man that also has tapes available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great AD/HD Resource
This a great AD/HD resource. The book is written in a very ADD friendly Q & A format. This book will anser many commonly asked AD/HD related questions. Many of the questioned answered are ones that you may have always wanted to know but were afried to ask.

This a great book to add your AD/HD Library.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'll show you my disease if you show me yours! Respond
That made me laugh. I have to ask do you believe in AIDS? Do you believe in cancer? Do you think people in wheel chairs can walk? If so way? Have you had any of them? Do you really know what they are like? How do you know they are real? How because science tells you and that same science also has done brain scans on people with AD/HD and has proven that it is real.

So I know people without ADD can have some traits of ADD like forgetting things, sure some people can be just like that but when you forget your own birthday, always lose your keys etc, never organised, can't concentrate for more then about 2 minutes, never on time for anything, poor sleeping habits, trouble learning what others find easy etc would you like me to go on?

If they sound like normal people to me god help us all.

3-0 out of 5 stars Answers to Review
Please disregard the top statement about ADHD being a medical fad. Obviously, he/she has never gone through a day of having ADHD. If this ADHD thing is such a fad, as he/she claims, then explain why studies have shown that well over 50% of those diagnosed with ADHD report major improvements after medication. ADHD research is not perfect, but it has benefited way too many people in this world to pass it off as just an excuse to sell pills.

I guarantee that the reviewer would not be diagnosed with ADHD, as he/she suggests. Doctors go through a series of questioning, and you will only be diagnosed unless your symptoms go over a certain threshold. You don't just get labeled with ADHD because you're forgetful or sometimes hyper; you have to display a certain level of symptoms. In extreme cases, it's almost impossible to deny: blurting out comments for no apparent reason, complete inability to sit still, etc....

ADHD research is not perfect. But just because it doesn't work for you or your family does not mean it applies to everyone. I'm sorry that your child was misdiagnosed, but a lot of people are diagnosed and helped. But for those who want to find information, I have (and most psychologists I know) recommended "Driven to Distraction". It's pretty much the most basic book you can find on the subject. If you are one of the fairly small percentage of adults who are constantly frustrated by a brain malfunction that makes you feel stupid (even though you know you're not), then please at least do the research. It couldn't hurt you to arm yourself with more information. ... Read more

    Book Description

Can a woman become more powerful without becoming a man?

Women who triumph don't follow the rules; they flaunt them.

Harriet Rubin has studied the great female heroes in the wars of intimacy and public life, and distilled their behavior into a plan of action.Whether confronting lovers, mothers, bosses, or competitors, The Princessa is a guide for the woman who feels she deserves far more than she has gotten through compromise. While women have been socialized to avoid conflict, to be peacemakers, caretakers, and nurturers, Rubin shows how those very skills--sensitivity, emotional depth, and selflessness--can be codified into a new strategy of power. The Princessa imparts inspiration and wisdom from history's great divas, poets, saints, sinners, and artists, as well as from leaders of the most important social movements in our time--women who, with the Furies inside them, in a spirit of justice and outrageousness, established their own rules of power.

Just as Machiavelli showed the prince how to use conflict in order to establish control, Rubin shows why women must act more like women."Think of mothers risking everything to defend their young," writes Rubin."Think of women overcoming all odds for love."She shows how women, playing by men's rules, have only reinforced their own weakness. So long as the gender wars are waged on male turf, women will always be fighting a losing battle. It's time to win. 4-0 out of 5 stars Yikes! Y'all either love it or hate it, don't you?
While reading The Princessa, I found certain ideas about power made me very uncomfortable, which is usually a sign that something is hitting a nerve. I absolutely adored this little book, and like another reader, keep picking it up to go over pieces of it. Obviously, you can't please all of the people all of the time, but I'm amazed at the vehemence with which certain reviews wrote. I thought Rubin's expression of ideas was fascinating, and I think she's a fine writer. I also liked the manner in which she presented these ideas about women and power; like a myth, like a story, like a fairy tale. Seductive but deadly.

I'd save my griping for the drivel John Gray writes; I mean, how many times is he going back to his word processor to "fix up" Mars and Venus?

I loved it. Harriet Rubin is a visionary for those of us that still believe (or wish to believe) that the path of the heart (combined with the good sense of a skillful mind) has the potential to be the most winning combination in business, as in life. Not for the faint-hearted or those who cannot think outside the box.

I enjoyed this book. Although the author takes too long to get to most of her points, it is a very insightful book and has ideas about power tips to use in the jobplace such as how to act in meetings, where to sit to attract attention, and dealing with staff. I would recommend it to a reader interested in advancing her place in business with the warning that a lot of "skim reading" is needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is not a how-to book
I, too, am amazed at the differences in the reviews. I go with the "read-4-times-a-year" group. This is not a how-to book with step-by-step instructions on how to get and keep power. Perhaps that is why people are so violently opposed to it: they think Rubin is telling women to cry to get their way. I read it more like: it is okay to cry, if you have tried everything else and that has failed.

I find it quite meditative and like to read a chapter here and there at night. I usually sets me off analyzing situations I have recently encountered. And I must say, many of her insights are quite helpful.

I recommend this book to every woman I encounter who had just taken a step up the power ladder!

An affirming little tome, Rubin continues to bolster those of us who just want to do good business - and are surprised when our best intentions don't speak for themselves. With wit, character studies and a bit of mystery, she continues in this writ to draw our best selves out of us - the ones that want to win at the boys' game but have a little girl's sense of play about the rules.

I find myself bringing this book out when I have been broadsided and need to regain my bearings in this mannish world of business-as-baseball ethics and practices. And I bring it out to add to the underlines already there, because with each re-read there are more messages, more thought-provoking phrases and more challenges to the greater good that I have missed in readings past.

It's a mysterious book; don't think you'll get all the illustrations and diatribes with the first read. But know that it was written just for you, wherever you find yourself having to 'best' instead of 'win' for the sake of good business. ... Read more
