I purchased this book expecting it to cater to someone beyond University level. However, the contents clearly cater for high school level learning and therefore provided little value to me. If you are looking to strengthen your technical and analytical skills look somewhere else. If you want basic training, give it a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Comedy!
Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding were a pair of brilliant and all too little-known comedians who came out of the golden age of radio. Their comedy was quite simply an endless satire of radio broadcasting itself. Actually, "comedians" sounds two obvious for their deadpan, parodistic humor - I think perhaps "comic artists" is more approriate. Instead of telling jokes, this comedic duo performed little plays where humor is created through characterization, irony, and word-play. This is verbal wit and high comedy at its best. Bob and Ray were too subtle to ever become really popular, but they always had a small and devoted following. Their dry, offbeat humor is impossible to adequately describe - you have to experience it to understand it. This award-winning compilation comes from the twilight of their long career - the 1980's. These particular performances come from Bob and Ray's Public Radio Show, and were recorded in front of a live audience, which only adds to the fun. There are dozens of B & R sketches here, including numerous installments of their hilarious mock-soap opera, "Garish Summit". Many classic B & R characters make apperances. Buy these cassettes and be prepared to become delirious with laughter!

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Best of Bob & Ray" Is Simply the Best!
Bob and Ray's low-key humor is perfect for long drives. I have the four volumes of "The Best of Bob & Ray." Each volume has four audiocassettes, each audiocassette with two 30-minute shows that will keep you in stitches and make the miles fly. "Garish Summit" is without a doubt the greatest soap opera ever to make you laugh so hard your nose runs.Volume 1 will have you longing for Wing Po, Traveling Philosopher, to come by and read your woodpile. ... Book Description

Healthful sleep has been empirically proven to be the single most important factor in predicting longevity, more influential than diet, exercise, or heredity. And yet we are a sleep-sick society, ignorant of the facts of sleep -- and the price of sleep deprivation. Dr. William Dement, founder and director of the Stanford University Sleep Research Center, takes us on a fascinating tour of the sleeping body and mind, revealing the price we pay for ignoring sleep -- an epidemic of heart disease, 33 percent of traffic-fatigue-related accidents and immeasurable mental and psychological disadvantages.

Dr. Dement offers a hands-on prescription for vibrant good health and longevity, including: self-tests to determine how much sleep you really need; information on the role of prescription and over-the-counter sleeping aids; the latest research on how sleep affects the immune system; how to combat insomnia, snoring, jet-lag; and much more. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Good information but a lot of editing needed!
As you read this tome you realize that it being written by somebody with the odd balance of ego and humility that comes with being both a tenured professor and leading expert in a specific field.

To be sure, you'll learn everything there is about sleep that you never knew who to ask. There is a lot of good information that is written in layman's terms. The problem is you're going to have to [rummage]through a lot to read the important information.

The book is 540 pages long and could have been at least 200 pages shorter with better editing. There is way too much information about the author that isn't necessary. I really don't care about his love of Jazz music--unless it's going to help me sleep! He spends a lot of time lambasting the medical community for not knowing enough about sleep--some of it well deserved. One excellent point that Dement makes is regarding the use of sleeping pills. They have been demonized by the medical community when they could do a lot of people good with little actual downside. He recounts a story of one college student who was in desperate need of sleep. He tells about trying to get the school's infirmary to write a prescription for sleeping pills, which they flatly refused. I kept wondering why Dement himself didn't simply write the script?

Also, while sleep disorders make life miserable for a lot of people and lead to a lot of problems (such as Dement's accurate description of the cause of the Exxon Valdez) the whole world isn't about to die from sleep depravation. There's too much "the sky is falling" in the book.

With a good editor this could have been the definitive book on the subject of sleep. As it is you'll just have to skim through it to find the relevant information.

5-0 out of 5 stars There are lessons for everyone
I picked up this book at the Stanford bookstore because I suspected my daughter and my husband may be suffering from a sleeping disorder. After reading the book, I found out that I may have one too! Dr. Dement destroys many of the myths surrounding sleep including the myth that sleeping pills are bad. I was particularly struck by the dangers of driving drowsy, something I do quite often as a consultant who travels to clients. I now know there are actions that I can take to minimize the risk, including scheduling meeting times more in tune with the low energy points during the day. The book is written in a style that is clear, concise, and easy to read. Though I do not think all his recommendations are necessarily practical, you can pick and choose those that will work for you. I highly recommend this book for everyone, but particularly if someone in your family is having trouble sleeping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentals of Sleep
Before I read this book, I slept so poorly that I usually woke up with a headache. Now I'm getting really good sleep.

I don't think I would have done it if it hadn't been for this book, which I read after I first met Dr. Dement at a book signing.
Dement himself coined the term "sleep apnea" and started working for better research into sleep disorders -- kind of as a byproduct of his observations as a doctor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Only dummies would find it boring
This is a clear, authoritative, thorough book on the basics of sleep, sleep disorders, and the serious and subtle consequences of sleep deprivation. By reading it, I learned how to deal with my own sleep problems more effectively because I now have a better understanding of how sleep works and why sleep fails.

Although I agree that the author is leisurely and a bit indulgent with his personal anecdotes, I found his tone to be thoughtful, committed, and proud of his work rather than self-aggrandizing. Anyone who complains about "wading" should stick to large-type self-help books with lots of bulleted lists.

I also find it ironic that so many reviewers found the book "useless" and "uninformative"--it should be to Dr. Dement's credit that the fruits of much of his work have made it far enough into the mainstream to be considered "common knowledge." If a good, well-justified explanation of the research and reasoning behind this "common knowledge" is not your idea of "getting to the point," then this is not the book for you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good info. but a painful read
I find myself weeding through the book trying to pick out the actual informative content regarding sleep because so much of the content is autobiographical and self-laudatory -- not so much about sleep but about the good doctor himself; and even when he is discussing sleep, he never fails to point out how he and no other discovered this or that. If the doctor simply stuck with the subject at hand -- sleep, I would have given more stars. Rather, I feel as if I am reading the CV of an egomaniac. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Leaders Are Not Born But Made--It Begins Here!!
It's an easy read and can be applied immediately to you situation. The book brings the basics of leadership traits and principles to the reader similar to the military leadership books I've read in the USMC. So many times have I held jobs where a manager, although excellent in managing projects, through some lack of sensitity or judgement created an uproar that cause moral to fall and people to become resentful and leave. There are many stories in the press of managers and CEOs restricting "bathroom breaks", playing favorites, freezing wages and laying off employees while taking huge "bonuses" like American Airlines and ENRON. What's present here is basic but essential information for anyone in a leadership roll whether at work, church functions, or managing a family trip. This should be required reading for everyone BEFORE you find yourself in a situation as leader. The boss could be out for a whole month tommorrow. Can you keep the team working smoothly while the boss is out or is it party time?

1-0 out of 5 stars Leadship for the Dumb
This is a remarkably barren book, perhaps the worst I have ever read. The author considers the epitome of leadership to be a left wing american-football-quarterback save-the-whale ban-the-bomb activist. If you are not athletic nor overly sentimental with the obsessions of nanny-state socialism you will find this book patronozing and offensive.

It is also without content - the discourse within being bluff, baffle, waffle, twaddle and blag. There is no inspiration or insight to be gleaned, not even to the degree of a crude platitude.

A better book for leadership is Henry V with its lessons in luminous articulation and its ideal of the noble spirit. It doesnt pretend to have the breadth of Leadership for Dummies, but then what use is an ocean of salt water when you are begging for a cup of tea. ;oD

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Managing, but Leading
The authors do a great good of presenting leadership principles and not managing theories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Leadership for Dummies
Having just completed a "Leadership" MBA program at at local University, I was pleased to find this "Dummies" book.

The book introduces many different aspects leadership, in a interesting manner, similar to all of the other "Dummies" series.

The book tells us what it takes to be a leader, the leadership process, the art of leadership, vision and team building.

at 358 pages the book provides an good understanding of what it takes to be a leader, and how we can develop our own skills to develop into effective leaders.

The book was exteremely effective in reinforcing the same leadership principles discussed in my MBA program...but for those of you who don't want to spend the $5K on an MBA leadershiop course..thsi book will get you there!

Strong recommendation...does that mean I am a Dummy? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll Never Be at a Loss for Words Again!
Out of seven word power cassettes I bought, this audio book is the best. It starts off elementary level and quickly goes to collegiate level. I was astounded by the way the book is organized. The material is presented in such a way you WILL learn it. Since the words you use say a lot about who you are and where you're headed, I fully recommend this book!

Whether you want to express yourself clearly to impress a prospective employer during a job interview, take an entrance test, or just brush up on those pesky words you encounter every so often reading the newspaper, Kaplan Word Power® is the essential tool to help you expand your daily vocabulary.

In this audio book, you will energize Your Vocabulary with must-know everyday words that are the essentials of a good vocabulary! You'll also receive engaging lessons to help you utilize words in context, "hot" words often found on standardized tests like the SAT and GRE, and tips to help you figure out new words, roots, and more!

This book is the best. Get this audio book. You won't be sorry!

1-0 out of 5 stars elementary, boring, unorganized, not worth buying
Of all the vocabulary building audio cassettes that I bought, Kaplan Word Power is absolutely the worst. It not only is unorganized, but it also assumes that you have a junior high level education. The first 15 minute of this 60 minute cassette is wasted on a boring outline of the rest of the cassette material. I couldn't believe that I actually listened to the entire tape filled with crap such as "Do you know what prefix and suffix are?" "Do you know good methods to memorizing new words?" "Do you know that many words have multiple meanings?" After 5 minutes listening to the tape, you will also realized that this cassette is 100% trash.

I have bought Princeton Word Smart, Princeton Word Smart Genius, Word Builder, and others, and all of them are superior over Kaplan's Word Power. If possible, I would not hesitate giving this cassette negative stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! Need more like this for all Public Safety Pros!
I have been buying this book for myself since it's first publishing, then end up giving it to someone who needs this more than I do (I speak Spanish). This is a well planned and layed out book for all medical professionals who come in contact with Spanish speaking people whether all day long or infrequently. Rarely is there a translation tool that gets to the point quickly without leaving the medical professional in the dark. In 1999, I went with a relief team to Nicaragua in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch. We managed to treat more than 140 patients in three days with the help of this little book! It is easy to understand and to use. You can use the pronunciation or just point to the sentence and you get a straight forward answer. It's that simple! I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a medical question that needs to be answered quickly regardless of the profession. We need more books like these for all professions in the public and private sector. Buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
This is a great book for any medical professional who feels the frustration of trying to help a Spanish-only speaking patient and fells "tied", and helpless. You don't need to study this book to learn Spanish but rather start using it for history and physical and by time the language will be automatically embedded in your head. I love this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Funniest thing in print!
This book makes regular appearences at our house every holiday. Sooner or later someone pulls it off the shelf and starts reading choice bits aloud, and shortly the whole room is rolling on the floor. It's great fun to read by yourself, but for best effect try reading aloud to someone. Our rule is that when someone can't complete a quote because they're laughing too hard, they pass the book to the next reader, and it's rare for one person to keep the book more than about five minutes. Especially recommended for pun lovers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Any book that makes me laugh THIS hard ...
I picked this one up at Borders and started to read at ramdom. Within seconds I was laughing out loud right there in the book aisle. I had to buy it. When I read it at home, I had to do it in short hops because my stomach would hurt from laughing. It's a keeper. Definitely a great one for all who love our language - and having fun with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
great book by the father of high stakes poker pro howard lederer

1-0 out of 5 stars More of the same
This book was as disappointing as the author's other books I have tried to read. I seem to be continuously fooled by what these books seem to be, or what they cold have been, and am brought up short by what they actually are. In this case, a pedantic jaunt through junk e-mail type one-liners. I hold a college degree, studied English and creative writing, and am not illiterate, as another reviewer claims those who dislike this book must be. Perhaps my expectations are too high...a book should be entertaining?

4-0 out of 5 stars Loads of Linguistic Levity
Too often those of us who love the English Language put its lexicon up on a pedestal isolated from the world of irreverence or revelry. We view even the most good-natured mocking of it as a sacrilege. Richard Lederer has produced the perfect antidote to such sacrosanct pomposity with his laugh-out-loud collection of confused usage examples.

The wise underlining message of this risible read is that the richness of out mother tongue is greatly enhanced by its propensity for malapropisms, mispronunciations, misspeaks, and the melange of other maladies that can and regularly do befall it.

His chapter on rewritten history--a compilation of actual student papers' errors--reads like a much more amusing version of the revisionist rants that get taught in too many public schools these days. Lines such as "The Pilgrims crossed the ocean, and this was called Pilgrim's Progress...Many people died and many babies were born; Captain John Smith were responsible for all this" should rightly make us shutter when found in a post-modern textbook, but merely cause guffaws when taken from student essays.

While much can be lost in translation, priceless gems can sometimes be found in inter-linguistic exchanges as this gallimaufry of goofs from other languages amply proves. Cited nuggets include a Roman laundry that blatantly announced, "ladies, leave your clothes here and spend the afternoon having a good time," or the French hotel--presumably a hangout for swingers--that requests all guests, "please leave your values at the front desk." None seem to top the Japanese motel tailor-made for former President Clinton advising all visitors that "you are invited to take advantage of the chambermaid."

Perhaps no aspect of our revered English is as hallowed as the rules of grammar. Violating certain principles (What do yous guys want?) earn automatic and well-deserved odium. Yet even among these dogmatic deficiencies, Mr. Lederer found fodder for merriment. Sometimes the ambiguity of a pronoun can have an unintended, but uproarious impact on the perceived meaning of a sentence. Authentic selections include, "according to the report, a vehicle struck the mailbox as it attempted to get back on the roadway." Pity that the mailbox was so slow moving. Regarding ravenous politicians, we read "after Governor Baldwin watched the lion perform he was taken to Main Street and fed 25 pound of raw meat." Spelling errors and wrong words often go undetected, but in certain instances they can truly change a sentence's intended message. The book quotes an article that read, "during peek season the beach is covered with hundreds of bikini-clad beauties;" people are probably "peeking' during all seasons. Bug spray would be a minor concern to a garden where "the pistol of a flower is the only protection against insects," and it's best to have a holiday dinner out when one hears that "on Thanksgiving morning we could smell the foul cooking."

The referenced items above are random choices representative of the many inadvertently funny linguistic mistakes that comprise this rousing work. After finishing "Anguished English" readers should have a duplicitous glow--one part for the mirth that always stimulates a tired soul and the other a renewed respect for our glorious English--a majestic language that is not afraid to laugh at itself. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A good aide for English & Tagalog speakers.
Vocabulearn Tagalog comes with two audio-cassette tapes and a booklet. What you will hear is the voice of the English speaker and then the Tagalog one. The sections mostly contain one words, however there are sections devoted to short phrases. One drawback to this is that somewhere in the tape, the voices change order and that make things really confusing. Keep in mind that you cannot learn the language alone with this, but this should supplement your studies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightfully informative and interesting! A must for all.
A wonderfully informative audio read by Letitia Baldrige herself, the queen of etiquette. She manages to pack the tape with all the etiquette knowlege one needs for a lifetime--and does it with a very amusing and relaxed manner! At long last I know how to indulge in the remaining sauce on my plate without offending and what to when I bite into something that just isn't edible! My husband and I both found the tape very interesting, especially because many of the tidbits of information proferred have made for excellent banter! Because the audio tape is packed with such a broad range of etiquette information, I continue to find it worthwhile listening (After all, I'm bound to get my manners together eventually... ) I give Tish the Dish and A+. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Education Value
These tapes are the most interesting educational tapes I have ever listened to. Mr Elster does much more than read from the dictionary. He gives you the correct pronunciation, correct usage, and the etymology of many of the words. The tapes are excellently produced and should be mandatory for all college freshman. If you want to open up a whole new world to yourself listen to these tapes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Reading from dictionary
From their advertisement pitch ("a program that feeds words effortlessly into your memory... you'll be able to use hundreds of new words in hours..."), one would think that they'd used some cutting edge psychology techniques (such as NLP, conditioning, etc) to aid your learning. But you'll be disappointed when you discover that the author did little more than reading from the dictionary.

Here's the format for every word on the tape: 1) author reads the vocabulary 2) he spells it 3) reads the definition and sometimes the origin of the word 4) reads the synonyms and sometimes antonyms (which he did not bother to spell. So if you didn't know the synonyms to being with, you can't even look them up in a dictionary) 5) often he gives some example of usage.

With exception of #5 above, there's nothing you can't get from reading the dictionary like Rain Man does. At least, when you read from a dictionary, you don't have to keep rewinding the damn thing to catch the synonyms you missed.

Each verbal advantage set comes with 2 tapes. The author spent half of the 1st tape introducing the program, telling you why you should learn vocabularies. He then spent half of the 2nd tape explaining how to read from a dictionary. Okay, so you say "I don't know why I should learn more words and I never used a dictionary before." You'll be surprised when you open Verbal Advantage level 2, and discovers the EXACT same repetition of the introduction and how to read dictionaries.

You might learn a lot of other things from these tapes... but you definitely will not learn a lot of new words.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good vocab learning
The author is very excited about his love of vocabulary and a person's vocabulary having an effect on their success. This helps to motivate you along with the host of new words you'll learn. The exercises are good but there could be more of them. Overall, its very informative and a worth the cost. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice paperweight
I read this book because it claimed to help increase reading by 50%. I thought that I was a strong reader. I read about 230 words per minute. Well, after reading this book, I read about 250 words per minute. 20 words wasn't worth it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Skip this, get Breakthrough Rapid Reading by Peter Kump
Reading this book feels like talking to a used car salesman. Stanley Frank spends as much time in this (very thin) volume giving anecdotes on how wonderful Evelyn Wood speed reading is as he does giving any useful information about how to read faster. The book does give some rapid reading techniques, but fails to link them into a curriculum for actually training oneself to increase reading speed.

By contrast, I found Peter Kump's "Breakthrough Rapid Reading" (recommended by another Amazon Reviewer) to be quite helpful. Kump's book mixes the theory of Evelyn wood with comprehensive exercises to put these ideas into practice. Kump also gives the reader a way to record and track progress through the course.

The concepts of rapid reading are not difficult, the challenge lies in putting them into practice. Save your $7, skip Frank, and buy a book that will actually help you learn to read faster.

1-0 out of 5 stars Shame on Amazon
Amazon as sells this book under the title "Remember Everything You Read", it is the exact same book word for word. This one is hardcover and the other is paperback. From reading the description for the one about it being adapted from "Remember Everything You Read", I thought I was getting two different books.

Unfortunately, returning it isn't worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable, but vauge
My reading speed shot up from 143 words per minute to 450 in the first 10 minutes of doing the program. This book offers valuable tools on time manegement and note taking useful to any student in any realm. In order to reach supersonic speeds when reading, the book claims you must take information out of order. Unfortunately, it never explains how you should go about conditioning yourself to do so. However, this book is worth investing in even if only for its study skills section alone! 4 stars!

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of unrealated Content
There are only about 20 pages in this book that have to do with Speed Reading. Most of the book is success stories and how to improve your study habits which would be fine if the book was titled "Improve Your Study Habits and Get a Brief Introduction to Speed Reading" but it's not. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource
This book is simple and elegant - you can judge it by its cover. It takes the wedding planning process step-by-step, helping you decide each aspect of your wedding by offering the full range of choices, down to veil styles.

The vendor questions were extremely helpful, and due to the color and size of this book I did not feel silly taking it with me to appointments. It has adequate space to write but is more of a workbook style, with lists and notes throughout instead of all in one place.

I did not use this book all the way through my engagement because I needed more detailed, personalized information. It was excellent for planning. It was definitely our number one resource for etiquette and formality questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brief and to the point
I used this book as a reference and kept all my reciepts, etc in a 3-ring binder.(No book will have everything.)Also, I could read the chapters in the 20+ minutes I had to devote to reading about them! The best part of this book was it didn't let you forget that you're throwing a party for everyone else to come and celebrate with you.I've been to so many weddings where folks sat with their chin in their hands and I felt this helped me give my guests a good time by focussing my spending on what really mattered- the ceremony for us, the reception for our guests.Folks responded so well to our party too- looking around, I saw NO chins in hand! Some great cost cutting tips too!

2-0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed
Even though this book has etiquette pointers, it doesn't have enough space to write down things.Sometimes you are directed to make a copy of a page so you will have enough pages. There is only two pockets to keep receipts, etc. Each section does have very detailed questions to ask vendors, photographers, etc.Instead of putting theses within the chapter, they should have been in an appendix so you can easily locate all the questions. My advice is to buy the Emily Post Wedding Etiquette book (which I did) and find another planner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like "FINE WINE" Books
The best things in life are often imitated, but hardly duplicated. Such is the case with two of the finest and most helpful wedding books I've read: "Emily Post's Wedding Planner" by Peggy Post, and "With These Words...I Thee Wed: Contemporary Wedding Vows For Today's Couples" by Barbara Eklof. Both books set the standard for today's perfect wedding. Post brings the same superb and tried & trusted approach to weddings that she has in every etiquette arena. And I've been a fan and gift giver of Eklof's "With These Words" ever since it's beautiful debut excerpts were published in "Brides Magazine"--imagine, the 1st of all wedding vow books. So if you have high standards for your wedding day, don't settle for second best. Stick with the pros and expect excellence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than a hired consultant
This is an excellent wedding planner. Its a good balance of etiquette, advice, information and a planning workbook. The only drawback was that I could not record the complete guest list in the planner itself, but considering how often my guest list changed during planning this was not such a bad thing. The organization is excellent - everything you need to know about flowers plus space for your notes is in one place so you don't have to flip back and forth when you're at the florist. If you want the most proper wedding, this book will tell you how.If you want something less formal, this is still the best book out there. ...
