Book Description

In her 93 remarkable years, veteran freelance writer, memoirist, and writing teacher Brenda Ueland published some six million words. She once said there were two simple rules that she followed absolutely: to tell the truth, and not do anything she didn't want to do. Such integrity both distinguishes and defines If You Want to Write, her bestselling classic that first appeared in the late 1930s and has inspired thousands to find their own creative center. As Carl Sandburg once remarked, Ueland's primer is "the best book ever written on how to write."

4-0 out of 5 stars A mystical treatise on the practical aspects of good writing
Brenda Ueland's treatise on writing, "If You Want to Write," is a valuable addition to the library of those who want to do just that. While the language can seem a bit dated at times, the meaning shines clearly through; clearly she has taken her own advice or writing truly and focusing on the things one cares about or is passionate about. To read it is almost to become hypnotized by her major themes: you are talented, you have a story or an observation to tell, you can write really well if you are true (not trying to be writerly), you need to enjoy the act of writing and be lazy about it, you need to relax and enjoy the beginnings in hazy territory. This is a good book to read to get you back into old habits, or to help writers re-assess their long-held and perhaps erroneous beliefs about what it actually takes to be a good writer. Ueland excerpts student writing to show examples, and the pieces she uses are very compelling, strong and true. I recommend this to writers and as gifts for writers. But I wouldn't suggest it for someone younger than 25. There is something in it that would be offputting for someone too youthful, too inexperienced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Inspiration
A timeless collection of inspirational essays filled with down to earth advice on creativity, art, writing, and life from a noble soul. I've read and re-read this book many times since it was first given to me many years ago by a special friend and it's always rekindled my artistic fires when I was in deepest need of them. Brenda Ueland uses Vincent Van Gogh, William Blake, Shakespeare, de Musset, Mozart, and other artists as examples of hard work, devotion, and passion. No matter how down and out you may be, wherever you may be in your life, "If You Want to Write" will bring you back to your higher self, reminding you that "you have talent, are original, and have something important to say." Sometimes that's all one needs to hear (or realize all over again) in order to take the next step in their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE most well written and interesting book about writing!
This book is just fantastic! I was looking for a book to give me inspiration on my writing and this is it! I wasn't so sure at first, I was afraid of yet another fusty, musty textbook-twin that would give helpful hints but bore me to tears. But from the first page I was hooked! "...most people must break through a shell of timidity and strain." What encouragement! This book proved to me that there are other downtrodden creative people out there, people who have had "contructive criticism" shoved down their throats until it nearly killed them. Plus, the strain of being pressured to "make a living" from your writing. Instead, Brenda Ueland encourages in the most enlivening way to write because you love to! And in her mind this applies to anyone, this is not just a book about writing. It is inspiration for ANYONE who is afraid to follow their true creative spirit.

She says that Van Gogh painted not because it was expected of him or because he wanted to make a profit from it, rather he painted the stars in the sky because he loved them and wanted to show other people how beautiful they are, he wanted them to be seen from his perspective so that others might share in his wonder! How can that fail to inspire all downtrodden sensitive creators?

In this book, Ueland shows how to bypass all negative feedback from others, how to search inside ourselves to find our true motives for creating literature, artwork, whatever we love the most! She is able to bring out the unique creative nature in everyone (for if everyone is different, then everyone IS original!) and in the process make us happy with what we find inside.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great against writer's block, you can't wait to start after
You can't wait to start writing after this one. I like the allover approach of the writer.
Writing as an art of living. Very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Number One
In my advanced writers workshop, I recommend Brenda Ueland's book above all others.

Book Description

An American legend rewrites a remarkably contemporary Adam and Eve. In tackling the first three chapters of Genesis, Twain creates a story of The First Couple who are psychologically familiar to even 21st Century Americans. He wrote the Diaries as a tribute to his own marriage, so they are also his most heartfelt and personal work.Between 1893 and 1906, he attempted six versions; only these satisfied him and were published in his lifetime.

This expanded edition is • beautifully illustrated • faithful to Twain's final rewrites • faithful to Twain's wish that the two tales be "bound together" • and includes passages published for the first time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A tender, moving love story!
Although Mark Twain uses the story of Adam and Eve in the Book of Genesis as the framework for these "diaries," the biblical couple and his are two entirely different stories. Having said that, Twain's version is such a touching love story, especially as it is rendered in this recording, it is worth hearing (or reading) without making any comparisons to the first Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

I mention this because a high school student recently inquired with me about Twain's views on religion, and thought that these diaries might shed some light in his beliefs. While I encouraged her to read or listen to Twain's account, simply because of the beauty of the story, I don't think they shed much light on Twain's religious views.

I did find it interesting that Twain's Adam and Eve barely mention God at all. Perhaps that is a notable observation on his views of religion after all.

Twain's tender observations on the nature of men, women and love is what makes this a moving tale. Walter Cronkite's commentary at the end makes one appreciate the story even more.

5-0 out of 5 stars A loving good heart
Twain long had an interest in Adam and Eve. His renewed focus on Adam and Eve in 1893 was touched off by his writing calendar maxims for Pudd'nhead Wilson, in which the Edenic couple appear. After that novel, he began Extracts from Adam's Diary, and followed that with Eve's Diary. Now Don E. Roberts has collected these writings along with four others by Twain that concern the Edenic pair in one narrative. For many readers familiar only with Twain's tales about mischievous boys or cranky characters, this work, one of the great love stories of all time, will come as a real surprise. Whether you're interested in Twain or not, if your heart hasn't atrophied, you will love The Diaries of Adam and Eve. Roberts's profound love of the art of the book is evident in every detail, from the illustrated dust jacket, which features a rare 1902 Thomas Marr photograph of Twain at Quarry Farm on the back; to the Smythe sewn binding in gold-stamped Kennett cloth; to the high-quality printing on acid-free paper; to the eight beautiful illustrations commissioned specifically for this volume. I have the book and the CD. If you are just going to get one I would suggest the CD because of Betty Buckley's superb performance reading Eve's part. Twain translated Eve as saying "a loving good heart is riches, and riches enough". After reading this fine volume I'm inclined to agree with her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Had me laughing out loud.
This book is so funny! Put yourself in Adam's shoes: you have been alone on Paradise for some time, and suddenly appears this talking creature that follows you around. Adam's thoughts on Eve and the world are hillarious. And then comes the tale from Eve - who loves Adam very much-, which is tender and still fun.

I read this book with my wife and she was laughing too. Then I lent it to a friend. He read it and passed it on to his wife.

I read Mark Twain on high school, and time only makes it better.

Now I'm after "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn".

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely book!
The Diaries of Adam and Eve is one of my favorite books. It's so gentle, funny, and deeply true I find myself loaning it to friends and giving it as a gift whenever I can. If you've not read Twain since Huckleberry Finn was forced upon you in junior high, this is a wonderful way to start reading Mark Twain's work again. If you've been looking for something to restore your faith in the worth of that whole man-woman thing, treat yourself to this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and enchanting.
The Diaries of Adam & Eve is an incredible representation of both sides of Mark Twain. The cynical side that most people seem to know, as well as a softer side that has largely been kept hidden.

From the unflinching stubborn "maleness" of Adam to the innocent yet knowing Eve, this book is an amazing testement of Twain's love for his ailing wife. It was her persuasion that led him to write the sweetly naive character of Eve. The gentleness of the work is very touching and may be a surprise for people who think that Twain was just a tetchy grown-up Tom Sawyer. Adam and Eve both have equal say in various "experiments" in their new world and their wonderful differing interpretations of shared events make the characters pop off of the page and into your soul.

I would also recommend the audio version of this book as read by Mandy Patinkin, Betty Buckley, and Walter Cronkite. The true musical nature of the text and the spirit of Twain's words really come to life in a spoken format and may move you to tears. ... Read more

Book Description

Journey Through Pet Loss is a soulful outreach to those who lose an animal companion through death or other circumstances. Deborah Antinori, MA has woven a tapestry of personal and professional elements throughout these audiotapes creating a balance between helpful suggestions from her professional experience as a therapist and pet loss counselor, and her personal experience as a pet owner.

This double cassette album features a variety of topics on pet loss including the reasons why one can experience such a deep sense of loss, memorial tributes for animals, the value of reminiscence, grief phases and tasks, issues of illness and death of a pet, euthanasia, burial and cremation issues, complicated mourning, associations to other losses, and other forms of pet loss such as lost pets and animals who must be given away.

Deborah tells her story of the love and loss of her dog of nearly fifteen years, Yoko, whose bright spirit still lives on in her heart. Deb! orah's poetry collection "All of a Sudden" was written at various times throughout the first year without Yoko to h elp her to cope with the void she experienced in Yoko's absence. This poetry is interlaced with the stages of grief, highlighting in a poignant way the many levels of feeling pet owners may experience when their animal is no longer around. Underscored w ith poignant music written by Marcos Estebez, the poetry contains timeless themes and can be used by pet owners for personal reflection time or a commemorative service for their pet, by therapists in pet loss and general grief therapy groups, and by veter inarian and human society staff for memorial services for animals.

This tape series provides a psycho-educational, personal and artistic look at a subject that affects anyone who owns a pet, since we will most likely outlive our charges. Written for the general public, "Journey Through Pet Loss" covers many topics that can benefit mental health counselors, ve! terinarians and vet support staff in the area of pet bereav! ement. Also appropriate for pet loss counselors with group and individual clients, portions of the tapes can be used in conjunction with ongoing therapy pr actices.

Animal lovers' feelings are honored and explored by remembering their pets which is encouraged by Deborah's reminiscences of life with and without Yoko. Listeners are given a precious opportunity to join in the honoring of one's special friend and the fe elings we experience in their absence in this "Journey Through Pet Loss".

The two cassettes have a total running time of 3 hours and 26 minutes. A 15-page Pet Loss Resource Booklet accompanies the tape series and cites any references Deborah makes to a pet loss specialist, organization, article, book or other pet loss resourc e mentioned by her on the tape. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very moving and useful in my time of loss anf grief.
A friend sent me a copy of Journey Through Pet Loss a few months after my 17 yr old terrior passed away. I took off the afternoon and went to bed to listen to the tape. Deborah spoke of many of the feelings I'd been having, including holding on to the grief as a way of keeping my terrior with me. While listening to the tape I realized that I had forgotten some of my most precious memories as a way of protecting myself. And while listening to the tape those memories came back. Journey Through Pet Loss helped me get through this very difficult time. Thanks to Deborah and to my friend who thoughtfully sent me the tape.

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful resource for counselors as well as loving friends
As a Hospice Social Worker of l5 years, I listened to Journey Through Pet Loss with great interest. For many people, the loss of a beloved pet was the first true experience of loss and grief. The way in which a first experience with death is dealt with often lays the foundation for dealing with future losses. I now keep two copies of this wonderful set to share with children and adults alike. I also have found it useful and healing to adapt the recommended exercises to use with clients who are dealing with the loss of a beloved human companion. Journey Through Pet Loss is carefully thought out- I expect that listeners will laugh through their tears, as I have, while listening.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ways To Work Through Your Grief
Sometimes losing a dear animal friend can seem more overwhelming than the loss of a human in our lives. This is one of the many things that complicate the grieving process. The author explains that there are many bounds set by society and our own inner voice that attempt to dictate how long and how much we should mourn a beloved companion's passing. She explains why the loss of an animal can be a much more raw experience than the loss of a family member, friend or relative because of the mixed feelings and complicated relationships that we have with other humans. That simple, loving animal spirit that was so close to you is suddenly gone. There is no buffering element, no memories of a heated exchange that soured your relationship - nothing to blunt the pain. This can bring feelings of confusion and guilt, or painful memories of the loss of a child or spouse, and many other emotions. The author does an excellent job of explaining the reasons for these feelings, and suggests many different ways of working through them. She explains the phases of the grieving process and where to find help if serious emotional states are triggered. She also explains that we frequently project a part of our own psyche onto our pets, which can unleash unexpected effects on their passing.

Despite the fact that I might have made this sound rather technical, it is not. The author puts forth a very gentle and concerned effort to do what the title implies - help you through the journey of pet loss.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book
I recommend this book to anyone who needs help through the stages of grief. It is practical and insightful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sensitive help from one who has been there herself
The author uses moving vignettes from the death of her own pet to help others review their own feelings of grief. After each topic, she encourages the listener to turn off the tape and reflect on his or her own memories and feelings.

She discusses pet memorials, stages of grief, euthanasia and hospice options. She emphasizes that each person has his or her own unique feelings. Different individuals might make different, equally valid choices for the beloved pet.

I liked the sections on complicated grief. Pet loss can often reactivate deeper feelings about past losses. The pet's death may be a chance to work through other life experiences.

Many of her general suggestions for dealing with pet loss could be useful for the entire family.

The section on children's reactions to pet loss could have been stronger. I had a sense that the author was more comfortable dealing with adults and their animals. However, she did bolster her section on children with quotes from other authors and gave useful references.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the Best!
I have always described myself as a "writer who never writes." I kid you not when I tell you that I have barely drafted so much as a shopping list in the last 20 years. Before reading this book, I attributed my problem to "writer's block." After reading the book, I know it is not a case of writer's block, but instead a case of "perfectionist's block." In other words, I've known what to write all along, I've just been terrified of how to translate the thoughts in my head onto paper. This book teaches you how to overcome the myth that anything you write has to be absolutely perfect, or it's not worth writing in the first place. It gives you the freedom to express yourself without the fear of rejection. It was absolutely a god-send for me. Since completing the book last weekend I've filled an entire journal with stories on a variety of subjects, with a long list of topics I have not even befun to explore. If you want to write but think of every reason under the sun to start tomorrow rather than today, this is the book for you. It will absolutely change your life!

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! Joel Saltzman is the greatest!
Fabulous! This book finally pulled me out of several years of procrastination, and gave me the kick in the ass that I needed to get myself writing again! Thank you, thank you, thank you, Joel! This is a book that I return to again and again, and I never come away disappointed. I recommend this book for every struggling student, writer, public speaker, and timid soul who wants to write or needs to write. Most of all, I recommend this book to those who are aspiring authors, but are pinned to the ground by fear. Read this book and set your imagination free

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT (if you write non-fiction)
Joel is an engaging and entertaining instructor who can help you eliminate writer's block. This book is WELL worth the money and time, and is a good, laugh-out-loud read. As much as I love this book, I write fiction, and this book would be of the most value to a non-fiction writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best writing book I've ever read
This is the book that got me really started writing. The principle is simple enough: if you really want to write something, you have to go ahead and start writing it, and keep on writing even though it's nowhere close to perfect. What keeps most people from writing is thinking that it has to be perfect the first time around. Saltzman says "writer's block" is really "perfectionist's block". This may sound like a simple concept, but the way Saltzman presents it is really unique; it's a real kick in the rear. And if you have any doubts as to the effectiveness of his writing method, just read even one chapter of the book. It's _thoroughly_ entertaining all the way through - and very informative. I never thought a book on writing would strike me as a "page-turner", but . . . this one is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
It was a very interesting book. This book really helps you to overcome fear of writing and helps you to understand that writing stories is not so difficult. If you can talk, you can write, that is very true and this book will help you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars At Last! A Vocabulary Tape I Enjoyed!
This one's fun! Great vocabulary;entertaining stories with good acting; and the best format for reinforcing words I've heard so far. (I just ordered a copy for my niece and nephews.) Find out about the capricious, dilettante mechanic; what Appalachian Clem fears will be proscribed;whether the diamond cutter is venal... What a find! I'm as sanguine as thearcheologist in volume 1. Congratulations Audio Univ/Bantum AudioPublishing! You've bested Princeton Review (Word Smart), Peter Funk of Funkand Wagnall (Word Power), Paul Altman (600 Words You Need to Know) and allthe others I've listened to. My only concern is that buyers intendingto purchase another volume will erroneously select one of the other vocabtapes that begin with 'Word'. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK
these tapes are wonderful!!!u would be surprised at the amount of information u'll be able to remember after listening to these.i took the PCAT 2 times and the first time i didnt have the tapes, and i didnt do as well as i wanted and then i bought these and my scores jumped up incredibly. These tapes are really informative and covers evrything u need to know in biology and chemistry. I recommend these tapes to anyone who's taking PCAT, u dont need any other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Biology Review
I used these tapes to help me prepare for the recent March 2003 PCAT and scored in the 94th percentile. I found the tapes to be a definite help as it has been like 6 years since I had College Biology. Like mentioned in other reviews, I found the Biology portion to be most helpful. The Chemistry section is kind of weak and you should order additional review materials like the Cliffs Quick Notes. $... is steep but consider it an investment in what hopefully is a successful pharmacy career.

2-0 out of 5 stars Matt KC Missouri
I thought these taps would be an easy way out. But how is hearing a guy ramble off facts about biology and chem going to help you do the math, chem, and vocab problems. These tapes did not help me at all. If you struggle with Biology this tapes would be great but otherwise they are no help. ...

3-0 out of 5 stars A good addition
I used these tapes to prepare for October's PCAT exam. I probably listened to each section about 5 times. I found the biology review the most helpful, while the general chemistry section was very short. On the other hand, 2 of 6 sides are devoted to organic chemistry, which gets less attention on the exam. The organic chemistry section was not useful until I went back to my text books and did a thorough review. Unless organic chemistry is fresh in your head, the tape will be useless. I wouldn't depend on these tapes alone to prepare for the PCAT, but buy them if you can listen while you do somthing else, like commute, for additional review when you otherwise wouldn't be sitting at your desk studying. I scored great, but I think I probably could have done so without the tapes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not that great!
I bought the AudioLearn:PCAT in order to prepare for the upcomming PCAT in March. The pack contains 3 cassette tapes which are divided into 3 parts: biology, general chemistry and organic chemistry. The price of the product is not [inexpensive] and I expected to learn a lot from it. However, what I got was far lower than my expectation. The tapes only contain very brief reviews of all the materials in those three courses and the voice of the narrator is quite dull. Moreover, the product did not emphasize a lot on general chemistry (it only has 1 tape side for general chemistry) while general chemistry is the main theme in the chemistry part in PCAT. In biology, the cell is very brieftly introduced and the anatomy and physiology of all the organelles in the cell are not fully explained.... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The book is pregnant with motivating examples
The books quotes numerous examples. That's what the book is all about.

Readers may use these as foundation point for implementing best practises in their own companies. Different companies have different situations.

These ideas motivate one to perform well, often to surge ahead of the competition. Gives you the adrenaline pump to come out with the best.

The importance of value-chain is emphasized by quoting examples of companies such as Lexus which managed continuity of service despite problems in plants of its suppliers.

Readers have to be cautioned that this book is not a panacea to customer-service problems.

Customer Service is not a mere toll-free number. A reader will realise this and much more by reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent insight into winning company formulas
No it doesn't take major working capital to build a successful marketing machine. It does require a focus on the details that are important to your customers. Before you squander working capital on fancy advertising campaigns, read this book. Then you will learn that spending your money on product formulation, service and support are the cornerstones to successful marketing. This book provides exceptional real world examples of how to grow a business by focusing on customer service solutions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed With Knowledge!
Arthur Andersen executives Robert Hiebeler, Thomas B. Kelly, and Charles Ketteman have brought the company's "Global Best Practices" program to book format. They tell you how to adapt any company's best practices to your business. They highlight dozens of examples from the thousands that they have collected for Andersen's popular database. The authors take a direct, no-frills approach to presenting their ideas and information, and concentrate on case histories that give you plenty of details. This makes the book highly useful, clear, and free of useless jargon, so we [...] recommend it to people at all levels in any business. You are bound to find some useful gems.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book of Ideas for Creativity & Innovation
A useful text with numerous examples to motivate and encourage your team to get creative and innovative. Useful to owners of small businesses and entrepreneurs to understand how the big organisations succeed. It is little things that could be done for big returns. With the focus on simple things like benchmarking and audit, understanding markets, products and services, it brings all together on winning customers. I have often trawled this book for best practices from time to time and without fail, I have found often new insight and ideas each time I flipped through it. Its a kind of book you may want to read and dip into from time to time for ideas to spark your creativity! The best practice agenda & top ten diagnostic questions at the end of each chapter are useful tools to develop your own best practices.

3-0 out of 5 stars old stuff
This book should have been titled "Best Practices,as Understood by AA". While there's good information on how others have focused on giving customers what they want, when they want it, where they want it and how they want; there's little new ground covered. Rather than looking inward to AA people for "Best Practices" the authors should have sought out cutting edge solutions and provided ways to implement. The promblem with corporate inbreeding is that you limit the intellectual gene pool. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, But Here's How To Make It Better!
I was thrilled to find this vocabulary building tool. All words and phrases are spoken clearly and distinctly, with no regional dialects. However, in it's present form, it is not as useful as it could be. In a cassette format, it is fairly impossible to repeat a small section of words over and over without risk of damaging your cassettes (or tape player). Listening to the tape straight through isn't going to help you memorize much either. Since there's not really a substitute on the market for what this product offers, I rolled up my sleeves and recorded my cassettes onto MiniDisc. After recording, I inserted track indices on the MD at the start of each page in the accompanying booklet. Now I can drill one page at a time repeatedly until those words are well-memorised, and then move onto the next page. This could be done with a CD burner as well, but would require a little more effort. However, if you are determined to increase your Dutch vocabulary, it would be well worth the time and effort. (PS: If you're just travelling to the Netherlands for a vacation, don't waste your time with language courses - 99.9% of Dutch people speak English fluently. Just get the Rough Guide phrasebook to help you with menus and signs, and that will suffice for a short-term visit.)

3-0 out of 5 stars Dutch/English: Level 1: VocabuLearn: Original Format
I bought some Dutch conversation cassettes. They are useful if you plan to visit the Netherlands as tourist. This is third which I bought. I think I prefer last one rather than previous ones. Because there are lots of vocabulary include expressions not only for tourist but also for daily use. it's enough for me in this moment to be familiar Dutch sound and increase vocabulary. So this is good cassette for beginner like me. but later I have to buy another books because there is no explanation of grammar in this book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The World's Most Annoyer Lecturer!
I purchased this with the intent of getting a quick and easy method of reviewing basic antitrust laws. While the content of these tapes is okay, the speaker's monotone voice is undeniably irritating. Throughout all 10.5 hours of tape, he repeatedly clears his voice, stutters, shuffles paperwork, pauses to collect his thoughts and notes, and every few seconds, exhales as if he is bored out of his wits giving this audio lecture. The materials is dry enough without his lack of enthusiasm. Tape also has portions where it is obvious that they cut and edited it, as you can hear the tape being stopped. At one point, they repeated a few lines using the same recording. Unfortunately, once opened, it cannot be returned. I only wish West's had a refund policy. Find an alternative source. This doesn't deserve your money until they retape the lecture. ... Read more
