2-0 out of 5 stars Too few tapes for such a long subject
The professor giving this lecture freely admits that if you don't study CP in a law class or for the bar, you will never get it in practice. Still, this tape series has only 3 tapes when your typical sum & substance subject has between 4 and 6. The professor crams cp rules into 3 tapes sides and article 4 payment rules in the last 3 sides. These tapes didn't become useful until I had read and made flash cards from his Gilberts law summary text. I can't believe the most difficult bar subject has so few study aids out there. This is very frustrating. I can't even say Whaley did a bad job here; it's just that these tapes alone won't do it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Spirit Of Youth
I think that this is a fabulous childrens book about the life of a young child an how she grows up through life. Her vibrant youth starts in New York City where her father is a wealthy man and builds them a nice house. The book then continues to follow her childhood until she is at marrying age. I feel this book is a perfect childrens book and shows what life and spirit that children can have. Hattie's almost non-stop spunk characterizes how children lived back then and how important childhood is. The main theme in this story is the spirit and vibrance of youth. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Let's Get Moving!
If you've been rather inactive in the recent past, this book will help you to get moving. It not only helped me to plan a well-rounded fitness program, but it really helped me to get motivated. The writing is clear and simple, and the authors do a good job at cutting through the jargon fog and giving you the essentials. and, of course, there's that "For Dummies" humor throughout. Best of all, it's cheaper than a personal trainer. In fact, if you need a personal trainer, this book has great advice on chooding a trainer that's right for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exemplary fitness book
If only all Dummies books were as good as this one. Extremely well-written with the most clear language one could ever hope for. Full of anecdotes, definitions, and plenty of myth busters. The personalization from the authors gets tiring ("Suzanne thinks that...", "Liz's grandmother once..."), but it is tolerable. Many, many aspects of fitness are covered in remarkable thoroughness. General weight lifting (both at home and the gym), supplements, gym etiquette, trainer tips, aerobic machines and classes, and fitness video buying are all covered with impressive detail. (If buying this book used, be sure to get the 2nd edition as it covers many topics that didn't exist with the first edition: Pilates, Physio balls, elliptical trainers, Bikram Yoga, and more.)

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best beginner fitness book.
I've read several beginner fitness books and I feel this is the most complete and best organized of them all. This has gotten me motivated and started on the right fitness program for me (I've since confirmed with a personal trainer). Honest and accurate fitness information is laid out in an easily understood way (without any questionable product endorsements). No "summary" style book is going to have everything, but they have enough information that you feel like everything else is fine tuning.

To address the concerns of another reviewer, the 2nd edition of this book does discuss common fitness injuries.

3-0 out of 5 stars Idiots 4, Dummies 3
I need an intro book on fitness that covers all the basis well, and in the bookstore it quickly came down to the Dummies book vs. the Idiots.

Similar quality contents on both sides, and the Dummies has a cleaner layout. But I ultimately chose the Idiots for the following reasons:

* The Idiots has a whole chapter on Martial Arts, where Dummies has no coverage at all. It also goes over jazz and a few other dance forms. This is very important to me as I consider the usual machine-based workout too soulless.

* I did not notice this myself, but the editorial pointed out a very important area - how to prevent injuries. The topic is not addressed in the Dummies as far as I can tell from the online TOC.

2-0 out of 5 stars AKA "Fitness-Related Consumerism for Dummies"
These authors love to shop as much as they love to exercise.

As a fitness neophyte, I turned once again to the Dummies series for its comprehensive, unbiased coverage of broad topics. What disappointed me about this selection is its enthusiasm for expensive gadgetry, club memberships, and professional consultation.

Admittedly, a healthy lifestyle isn't without a price tag, but this is ridiculous. In almost every chapter of this book (including a couple devoted entirely to the subject), you can expect to find one or more words of advice encouraging the reader to go shell out some more dough for one thing or another - a heart monitor, a personal trainer, a water pack, a dietician, a special mat for stretching exercises, etc. If you bought every item they recommended throughout the course of this book, you'd spend a full year's salary and fill a bedroom with all your new junk!

While they do advise against some of the more foolish purchases, such as those fat-zapping electrodes sold on infomercials, they spend little time extolling the virtues of those invaluable exercises you can do for free - stair walking, push ups, pull ups, etc. The chapter on exercising at home is a veritable catalog of the fanciest equipment money can buy, rather than suggestions of exercises you can do on a bare floor with your own body weight.

The authors also go a little skimpy on such topics as nutrition and weight training, but make darn sure to point you in the direction of other related titles in the "for Dummies" series.

If you generally like the Dummies books, do a little more shopping before you put your faith in this one. ... Read more

Susan Isaac's seventh novel is the first story of Lee White, a criminal lawyer on Long Island ensnared with a con man accused of murder. Lee is a privileged, Jewish baby-boomer, whose parents changed their name to White before her birth and then named her Lily. Her family's rise to unhappiness is directly related to their rise to affluence, and Lily tries repeatedly to liberate herself to prove herself as a wife, a daughter, a parent, and a lawyer. Though she struggles with self-doubt, Lily's strength comes from her ability to acknowledge vulnerability and overcome it. As she unravels the truth, she faces some difficult family truths and solidifies her belief in herself. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Con Artists and Lee White
I picked this book because I thought it sounded like a murder mystery -- a female defense attorney trying to prove her client -- who is probably guilty -- innocent.I thought this book might be comparable to Ed McBain.

This book, however, was more character study than murder mystery, in my opinion. The mystery was still there -- with lots of great twists and turns -- some guessable and some not.

But the thing about Lily White, the book and the person, that made me give the novel 4 stars is that I identified with Lee (AKA Lily White).Sure, Lee is an ambitious attorney. Her family (at first I felt I knew too much about them, but this only made the end that much more heartfelt) is nothing like my own (thankfully loving family). The differences are night and day.And yet, there is something there, some part of Lee, that I would bet is in all of us.By the end of the book, I was cursing those who had wronged and conned Lee White, cheering her new beginning at the end and every struggle she had won.

As this book drew toward the end, I could not put it down! And then, when it ended, I wanted to know what was next for Lee White.I could have read another 500 pages. She had become a real person to me, someone I thought of as a friend.

And that, to me, is the mark of a good book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Almost Paradise
After reading Almost Paradise, I wanted to read more of Susan Isaacs right away.Lily White was the first book I chose. It really was hard for me to get through this one.It dealt with way too much specifics on the law and such and not enough on developing the charachters like she did in Almost Paradise.

I made myself finish it, but was disappointed. It just didn't do that much for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous
This was my second Isaacs book. This and "After All These Years" are the best as far as I am concerned.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2 interesting, 2 heartbreaking, 2 books in 1
I read Isaacs' Compromising Positions a fews years back and stumbled across Lily White in the library.(incidentally, i found Compromising to be excellent.) Lily has it all.Suspense, intrique, emotion, laughs. The first time I read this book, I read it like it's written, starting with Lee White as a lawyer who is handling an interesting case while ex-DA office coworkers give her dirty looks for going to "bat for the bad guys".All the goings on of looking into the lives of some very strange people who will con their way out of a paper bag. This storyline gets swapped back and forth every chapter with Lee's parent's marriage, her childhood, her marriage (and ultimately it's demise), leading up to the moment she finds herself secure enough to live a happy-ending life. The style of this book was different and Isaacs takes care to not make it confusing to the reader. Her words are intelligent and the story kept me going til I put it down. A while after I read it through the first time, I picked it up and read every other chapter to follow that story, then went back and read all the opposite chapters.Different tone, but just as delicious. You get more for your money with Lily White.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
I read this book over a long weekend.I didn't want anyone to talk to me because I couldn't put it down.I did not realize until a few chapters into it that there were two parallel story lines, both so interesting thatI wanted to finish each chapter as soon as possible.Everyone will lovethis book.

Sometimes I had to reread lines when she uses a few cutesyterms but that is my only criticism. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars AudioLearn : DAT
This is not a good product for DAT prep. It is EXTREMELY basic. If you got a C or better in freshman Biology, these tapes have nothing more to add. Spend your money on the kaplan book and the topscore tests. Good luck on the test!
P.S. Instead of selling my used tapes I threw them out. I felt that if I sold them I would be taking advantage of someone.

4-0 out of 5 stars expensive but worth it
Don't expect to learn all the science you need from these tapes. However, they are useful. I listen to them in the car on my way to and from work. Then when I see the material in a textbook I already know about the topic and it makes it much easier to learn and remember.

The cost is high for what you get, but I couldn't find any substitutes and it is worth what you pay for it. I would buy it again and recommend it. Good luck on the DAT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review for the DAT, probably the best there is....
Very thorough review of the science questions covered on the DAT. I listened to it a couple of times and was able to recall a lot of information when I took the test. Don't use this as your only source of review, but definitely get it and listen to it a few times. One bad thing is that they don't have it on CD's yet. Hope this review helps all future dentists. good luck...

2-0 out of 5 stars Over rated in my opinion
I felt a little deceived by what this product claims and after listening to the tapes, I was right. I feel it is not a "comprehensive" review of the sciences at all. Only a brief overview. It does not cover "every fact, formula,..." etc. like they say. I should have guessed this when I only got 4 audio tapes that are suppose to cover 3 major college courses. Too good to be true I guess.

Specifically, I noticed that some of the organic chemistry topics on the audio tapes are NOT actually on the DAT (probably because they used the MCAT audio tapes for the DAT, they are different TESTS!) I wasted my time listening and taking notes at times. When I matched up my notes from these tapes to the actual DAT topics, I didn't need these, and could have spent more time on actual DAT topics.

Secondly, I ended up referring to my text books a lot. Sure, audio tapes are ok, like a lecture, but I gained the most from studying (by DAT topic) my nice color text books and actually DOING chemistry and organic chemistry questions. The audio tapes were not that helpful here.

Bottom line, for me, the best review and study material for the DAT was 1) my college text books, 2) the list of topics provided by the ADA in the Test Application packet and 3)lots of sample DATs including PAT tests in the computer format.

Focusing on these 3 things got me a 22 average after about 2 months of evenings and weekend studying.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a way to review!!
These tapes were SO helpful! I got 20 in academic average and 20 in overall science! Must have if you want to do well on your next DAT!! ... Read more

All of Stevan Thayer's transformational work is imbued with love and understanding. The angelic messages he brings forth in the "Ask an Angel"audio program offer a higher, broader perspective that pierces the veils of personality and conditioning that can limit one's experience of freedom and joy. The powerful insights you will gain through Ariel's loving wisdom are catalytic in the soul's evolutionary process.

4-0 out of 5 stars Your Instruction Made a Difference
Thanks for the great audio tapes. I had been searching long and hard for anyway to improve my mental game. I figured that was the biggest part of my game that could improve. I play at most twice a month so my play has been quite erratic. After listening to your tapes, I have improved my consistency and also shot the lowest scores in four or five years. Last weekend I had three birdies on the back nine and rolled in six long putts. I could not miss. I was truly "in the zone." The only glaring error of the round occurred after a playing partner reminded me I was one over par. My mind went everywhere but hitting that next shot. I ended up in the deep rough and got a triple bogey. The following hole I collected myself and rolled inthe birdie. Thanks again. Your instruction made a great difference in my game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Golf in the Zone can help succeed at any sport.
I recently purchased the Golf in the Zone tape. I do not play golf, but am a pool player. I found that your tape was wonderfully effective in cleaning up all the demons that I carry in my head that affect my level of play. I am a "scratch golfer" in the pool world, and I have found my game has increased by about 10-20% with my new found mental skills. And, perhaps the most exciting part is that I believe I have just begun to scratch the surface. Everyday when I wake up, I do a mental tune up. I use the same tools that you did, and during the day, I continually try to visualize my ideal game. So far this mental training seems to work. Thank you for a great product, and if you have any other suggestions please let me know. ... Read more

The Berlitz cassette pack with phrase book series comes in several languages, including some harder-to-find language programs like Thai and Hebrew. The series lives up to its claim of letting listeners hear the language "as it's really spoken"--which means fast and slightly indecipherable, just like being in a foreign country and not knowing the language. For anyone who's learned the hard way that trying to understand the local language is nothing like high school language class, that's a real blessing. But true beginners may struggle to memorize the longish phrases like "I want something just like that, only smaller and cheaper."The 90-minute cassette comes with a color-coded phrasebook containing over 400 essential expressions, plus travel tips, dictionary, and a pronunciation guide that reads like another foreign language altogether. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, the Greatest Novel Ever Written
I have read a lot of books and so I've scrabbled together a fairly intelligent idea of what a great book is; the definition has always been complicated and hard to explain, but I really needn't have bothered. The concept can be summed up in only three words: "War and Peace".
This is, simply, what all novels want to be when they grow up. The novel format is as varied as the writers who attempt it---to call "War and Peace" and "Ulysses" examples of the same art form seems ridiculous, but it's true---but ultimately a novel is a story about humans that explains what humanity is, or might be, or could have been; through these characters whose adventures you're following, you might learn something about what it means to be a human being. Every art form is about this experience, but only the novel can really hunker down and explore humanity in all its billions of shapes. You can learn not only facts and feelings but you can learn TIME by spending it in these pages. You can learn GROWTH. You can learn LIFE.
The main characters in "War and Peace" are Pierre Bezuhov, Prince Andrey Bolkonsky, and Natasha Rostov, three Russians caught in the middle of the war between their country and France in the years 1805 to 1813. Through them we meet dozens if not hundreds more characters, and through those dozens or hundreds we simply meet humanity itself. There's no other way to express it. The way Tolstoy tells us about his characters shows us ourselves; the identification is that strong. When a character falls, in battle or from old age, we feel that someone we know personally is gone, and we mourn them as though we couldn't simply flip back a few pages and resurrect them. The mass of life in this book is overwhelming: the story, like the title, is so big it seems impossible that you could find a moment of intimacy, but in fact there are hours here, even days. There is so much contained in the book, battles and weddings, parties and firestorms, evacuations and reunions, military history and moral philosophy, yet Tolstoy never loses track of his characters and how they are evolving while they watch the world tear itself apart and try, almost pitifully, to put itself back together again. It's an absolutely superhuman performance, one no writer could have dared hope for. Only one writer in history ever did it, and no writer ever will again.
"War and Peace" gets its reputation not from dusty old college professors, but from the sheer power of its story and the awesome scope of its understanding, and its ability to impart that understanding to the reader in the guise of a riveting tale of adventure and romance. The novel survives not because it's A CLASSIC, but because it is impossible to pick it up and not be sucked into its hurricane of humanity.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Eye of God
Ever since I was a teen (I'm 51) I tried reading War and Peace. The furthest I ever got was something like Page 80. Six summers ago, I thought, what the heck, give it another shot. After Page 100 or so, the book picked up steam, and I was absolutely awed as I've seldom been by all the great books I've read in my life. That's what I want to share with potential readers of this great book. Stick with it. It's like a trickling stream that grows and grows from many tributaries into a grand wide raging river. It's got everything in it, as if it were written by God. Tolstoy saw everything. There are so many, many unforgettable scenes in it. My favorite two are the costume party at the country estate (pure magic!) and the great wolf-hunting scene in which the wolf actually takes on a personality under the all-knowing skill of Tolstoy's great pen. In just a line or two, Tolstoy could actually get inside the "soul" of even an animal! I can only imagine how great this book is in the original Russian. After War and Peace, I devoured Anna Karenina, which is in many ways an even greater book. I'd recommend people read War and Peace with Cliff's Notes, as I did, because you get a sense of the historical background and it helps you from getting the hundreds of characters mixed up. War and Peace is more than a novel. It's an Everest of creation. Please stick with it!

5-0 out of 5 stars WRONG TITLE!!!
Unbelievable, simply unbelievable that the geniuses at the American Literary Society, or wherever the hell they translated the title of this novel, that they would do it incorrectly. The title is actually suppose to be War and World, which makes more sense anyway, since the book is not really about war and peace, but more about the war and the world during the war. The problem is that the word for peace and world is the exact same one in russian. However, when originally written by Tolstoy, the two words were pronounced the same, but were spelled differently. This fact is not well known, but to all russian speakers who are willing to investigate, look at the original title of the novel. It was spelled with an i(ukrainian e) instead of the (russian e). That word actually meant world and that is what Tolstoy meant when he wrote the novel. This is simply unacceptable and should not be allowed to go on any longer. The title should be changed to what it originally meant, without the stupid mistakes misguiding readers all over the world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Long as heck, but a good read!
What is Power? What is the power which moves nations? This is the ultimate question of War and Peace. The growth of the characters is amazing. Totally recomended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life Changing Experience!!!
I first read War and Peace with Anna Karenina during a course in the fall of 2002. I had always aspired to read Karenina but not necessarily War and Peace. I was very much surprised. War and Peace is a cultural gem, not necessariy a novel but an exprerience.

What I liked about War and Peace was Tolstoy's incredible means of developing his characters. In essence, we see his characters as adolescents and twenty-somethings develop into middle-aged people who have gone through child-rearing and career development. The key figures to watch are Pierre Bezukhov and Prince Andrei as they seek out the quest for fulfillment. We see them as young people trying to figure out questions of religion and love interests. We see them lose people they love, get divorced and do the wrong things sometimes. We read their letters, diaries, find out their secrets, and watch them fight out duels. We experience the characters becoming parents, nursing their babies, and fighting petty arguments.

Tolstoy wrote this work during a happy time in his life, and this is especially evident through his portrayal of Pierre and Natasha. The other characters are memorable -- through Tolstoy's vivid use of visual imagery -- Helene's white shoulders, Princess Mary's heavy walk, etc. etc. The cities are characterized -- Moscow is good Russia, St. Petersburg has been corrupted by too many European influences. The Rostovs are admirable Russians whereas the Kuragins tend towards corruption.

The historial tracts and the portrayals of the historical characters are interesting -- I can't say enough things about this work. It was life-changing, and it inspired me more than any other book that I have ever read.

Try to get this Maude translation -- it is the best one and it has wonderful explanations and background information! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars VERY CONFUSING!
This is by far the worst language instruction book I have ever used. The format is very confusing. For whatever reason, you are instructed to read the end of the chapter first before attempting to follow the dialogues and exercises at the beginning of the Unit. By the middle of the first chapter, full articles are written in Spanish without any translation. I was completely lost. While many of the students loved our Spanish instructor, they dropped the class because of this textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book
I have finally finished this semester in college and I can honestly say that Spanish with ¡Dímelo Tú! has been wonderful. It is a very good book - definitely one that I will keep and not sell back to the book store. I love it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good for lower level courses

1-0 out of 5 stars This book was very unhelpful.
I am a student of Spanish. This textbook contains a number of errors, jumbled phrases. The glossary is terrible. I have to recommend going with another textbook if you are thinking about teaching Spanish or learning Spanish.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dimelo tu has abundance and variety of materials, inc. web
I just completed my first semester teaching from Dimelo tu and am pleased. The textbook and workbook include web sites and internet search words pertaining to the countries highlighted in each chapter. The nice, big accompanying workbook is divided into two halves, one with lots of written practice exercises, and the other entirely devoted to listening exercises (with accompanying cassettes or CD's). The instructor video is so-so. The testing workbooks have some good material. As for the textbook, there seem to be abundant activities and exercises. All of the main grammar is explained on green pages at the end of each chapter, following the vocabulary. Each chapter treats one country, with brief passages on that country, past and present, and a famous personage from there. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor audiobook
The first side of the tape tells the listener how important a good vocabulary is, how the brain continues learning as we age, what this tape is going to do for you, etc.The second side introduces you to about 15 words! That's about 75 cents/word, a very low return on investment with very little meat.A decent tape should cover 100 words.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well...
Consider "Word Smart II" from Princeton Review or "Verbal Advantage" if you want to learn new words.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too few words.
It's not for learning new words by listening to the tape. The primary purpose of this tape is not to introduce you to this tape. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A scary subject was made understandable.
When I went to law school, I was told to avoid conflicts like the plague. This lecture series helped alleve (sp?) my fears. If you have an understanding of civil procedure, you can get the gist of this subject. The lecturer has a dead-pan voice that may turn off some listeners. Also, so many of the most exemplary cases involve out-of-state car fatalities and divorce cases, so be prepared to be depressed. Still, I found these tapes useful. I'm a little concerned that the professor could have added more material. Still, I found his lecture to be a valuable study aid. ... Read more
