5-0 out of 5 stars Say what?
Students who use Lucas' book are presented not simply with an excellent text for preparation and delivery of speeches, but also with a website full of information, examples and tips. While this is intended for a classroom setting (the teacher's edition comes with a lot of supplements to help enhance the learning experience for the students), those who want to learn about the mechanics and processes of public speaking on their own would not be ill served by using this text.

There are some signature features that make this a very good text for students, both independent and classroom based. The internet connection is but one, not only the website associated with the book, but also tips on using the vast resources of the internet wisely and efficiently. There is a strong coverage of ethics, to help students avoid the problems of plagiarism (intentional and inadvertent), as well as how to listen properly (without attaching personal agenda or false meaning to interpretation). The book is very visually interesting, with colourful pages, pictures, charts, and examples of things that might be used to make speeches more interesting. The text is written with the student in mind - it is not a book by experts for experts, and thus keeps the language at a basic level without sacrificing clarity.

The book itself is organised into broad sections: Speaking and Listening; Getting Started; Organising and Outlining; Speech Presentation; and finally Varieties of Public Speaking. There are few things that inspire more fear in many people than the prospect of having to deliver a public speech - the first chapter deals with some of this anxiety issue, as well as helping the students to understand the role of the listener (a role that most of us assume far more often than we realise). The sections on Speech Preparation cover the range from selecting the idea, understanding the audience and doing research to organising the speech from beginning to end in a logical, meaningful, and interesting manner.

While the section on preparation might be consider by many to be the most important, the section on speech delivery is perhaps the most vital, for a good speech poorly delivered will likely not have much impact, whereas a poor speech delivered with great power can often have great influence. This section deals with issues of language, delivery, body language, personal presentation, as well as the use of visual aids (when they are and are not appropriate).

There are different types of speeches, and these are covered in the final section. Speeches can be used to inform (like lectures), to persuade (much of political speech is like this, as are sermons), or in special occasions such as introducing people, presenting awards, accepting honours, or speeches of commemoration and memorial. There is also a section on small-group speaking - most people don't attribute the idea of 'giving a speech' to speaking in board rooms, committees, etc., but this requires a special kind of rhetorical skill.

Overall, this is an excellent text for coming to understand the art of public speaking from beginning to end. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Text Book to Keep
I have taught from this book for almost five years now; it is in its seventh edition, has a CD Rom now that includes video clips. The book is comprehensive, and no single semester course can cover everything in it; but I think it is a great book to teach from. First, it is WELL WRITTEN. Next, it is organized well. Finally, the speeches it contains are great examples---both student speeches, and those from the public sector. I recommend to all my students NOT to sell it, but to keep it for reference later.

3-0 out of 5 stars Remind me to sell this one back
From the inauspiciously multicultural front cover to the very last page, this book definitely has not-so-subtle politically correct overtones; most notable is the section on avoiding overtly masculine language. Its political bent is unabashedly left-wing. As a speech book, however, there are actually some very helpful tips; I found the section on overcoming nervousness well-designed and thought out. The CD is little more than meretricious fluff. Overall, there is really little more than you could find in any serious speech book or even website; it is simply dumbed down for modern college students.

1-0 out of 5 stars Total garbage
I cannot stress the point that if this were not required for many college public speaking courses, Stephen E. Lucas would probably be writing greeting cards at best and at worst, the ingredient label on a tube of toothpaste!
The author uses examples of persuasive speeches (with a liberal agenda) to a receptive (liberal) audience as his evidence that a well written, well delivered speech will influence the audience to the speakers view. Total cr^p!

I wouldnt have bought this if it wasnt a required text and I am happy to be selling this liberal trash to some other poor unsuspecting student. I wonder if the college gets kickbacks from the publishing houses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Reference and Well Constructed
For both beginning and advanced speakers -- really, anyone seeking to persuade others -- this is a FINE reference. The work is loaded with URLs and reference sources for research purposes. You'll definitely want to keep this book on the shelf within handy reach. The chapter on "Speaking to Persuade" is especially useful for getting commitment from others. I recommend the work particularly to business professionals who want good, solid advice on how to construct and deliver effective communications. In addition, the author has provided exceptionally well-integrated support materials to ensure proper understanding of the concepts. Teachers and trainers will find the bank of test materials and workshop exercises extremely helpful. Also, the CD presents highlights from such outstanding speakers as Barbara Bush, John F. Kennedy, Elizabeth Dole and Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

5-0 out of 5 stars the almost perfect public speaking textbook
College bookstores do a brisk "buy back" business at the end of each term. Since I started using "Naked" in my basic public speaking classes, the bookstore has to regularly order new editions because so many students want to keep this book! Hoff captures vividly the sense of public speaking as a MUTUAL RELATIONSHIP, not a one-way autocracy. His coverage of communication apprehension/speech fright is excellent as is his coverage of first impressions, delivery, and audience analysis (which includes language use and setting analysis). His coverage of organization is less developed, but it is a treat to see his use of classical Roman rhetoric in establishing a basic organizational pattern (although he is incorrect in claiming that Cicero wrote the first manual of oratory---that credit goes to the earlier Greeks, Corax and Tisias). This book moves basic public speaking out of an artificial classroom setting to the larger world in which students will spend their professional and personal lives. Hoff's enthusiasm and experience go a long way to convincing readers that they too can achieve "the perfect moment" in connecting with an audience. Bravo!

    5-0 out of 5 stars Trainer's Bible
I've been training trainers for five years and I consider this book my bible. It's the best investment I've ever made. I had fun reading it and was able to apply what I learned immediately in my training. Ron Hoff addresses just about everything one should know before speaking in front of a group and he does it with humor and heart. He is my training hero! I try to re-read it every few months for fresh inspiration and motivation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great, funny book easily makes your presentations smooth
This easy-to-read book helps you to calm your nerves about presenting your work in public. It is written with great good humor and style. The author has clearly "been there" and knows how to give terrific tips on how you can be the best speaker/presenter possible.

If you are going to get one book on how to prepare and present the best speech or presentation, this is the one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for bringing your presentations to life.
I selected this book as the primary text for a train the trainer program I facilitate in my organization because it's got great tips, and because it's easy to read, understand, and apply. I would recommend it to other trainers who want to capture and keep the attention of of people they train.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and humorous
I used to be a nervous wreck. Making my oral presentation for my undergraduate honors thesis almost did me in. My sister gave me this book to be funny, but I read it to learn.

I found this book helpful, not only for letting me see group presentations in a different light, but also for the insights it gave me for other social situations. ... Read more

    Book Description

Give Powerful Speeches to Audiences of Five or Five Hundred

There are several universal truths about public speaking. Most people hate doing it, and most don’t do it well. And not surprisingly, most audiences retain just a fraction of a typical speech’s content. Given these obstacles, why—in an age of telecommunications tools such as videoconferencing and e-mail—do we continue with "live" presentations at all?

Communications expert Nick Morgan says we do so because speeches remain the most powerful way of connecting with audiences since ancient Greek times. But as television has ushered us toward a more informal, conversational mode of public speaking, we have forgotten much of what the Greeks taught us about the importance of form and structure in speech giving. Even more crucial, we’ve lost the physical connection with an audience that does more than grab attention; it impels action.

Morgan says this "kinesthetic connection" comes from listening to your audience with your whole body, through everything from eye contact to facial expressions to gestures. In Working the Room, he draws from nearly twenty years of experience as a speech coach and consultant to offer a new, audience-centered approach to public speaking that combines the best of ancient Greek oratory with modern communications research.

Through entertaining and insightful examples, Morgan illustrates a practical, three-part process—focusing on content development, rehearsal, and delivery—geared toward engaging an audience on every level: emotional, intellectual, and physical. Presenters from novices to seasoned orators will learn how to:

    • Craft an "elevator speech" that concisely nails the key message.
    • Prepare a compelling "story line."
    • Rehearse effectively.
    • Involve the audience.
    • Choreograph body language to reinforce the core idea.
    • Channel nervousness into positive energy and passion.
    • Master the technical details of voice, posture, gesture, and motion during delivery.

Whether speaking to a handful of employees or a keynote audience of hundreds, anyone can use these principles to give speeches that challenge minds, impassion hearts, and empower audiences to change the world, one idea at a time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Working the Room
This should be a 'must' reading, studying, practicing, emulating, in short - the bible for those who do presentations.

The author introduces the idea of developing a kinesthetic connection with the audience by using opportunities for making intellectual, emotional, and even physical contact. The book provides specific strategies to help presenters prepare, rehearse, and master the art of giving speeches that challenge thinking and spark action. STERN'S MANAGEMENT REVIEW finds this a stimulating, insightful and valuable work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Turbo Charging Your Presetation Skills
Finally, a truly great book concerning the art/craft of public speaking. If you heard advice like "picture the audience in their underwear", then you owe it to yourself to read "Working the Room". In this insightful and eminently useful text, Nick Morgan explodes the myths of bad speech-making and crafts a better mousetrap.

Morgan's central theme is that the the only reason to give a speeach is to "change the world". According to the author, a speech is not a collection of information rather it is a forum to showcase the unique passion of the speaker to sway hearts and minds in the audience. Morgan takes the reader through a thorough process of crafting a speech, rehearsing it, and rendering it to an audience in an entirely new and effective way. I guarantee that you will never think of giving a presentation the same way again. Hint: It has nothing to do with the quality of your PowerPoint.

Morgan's style is first rate. Filled with useful insights and stories, the book is lazer precise, witty, and absolutely right on time. No fuzzy thinking here. Just solid advice from a unique perspective. It's also an excellent length. It isn't too short and at the end, like many great reads, it leaves you wanting more!

If you are a person who presents on a regular basis or even if you are a neophyte looking to hone your speaking skills, there is only one book to buy and that's "Working the Room."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Valuable Read
I tend to hate business related books. They are usually boring and trite. Someone whom I respect and who had hired Nick Morgan gave me this book. To my surprise, I found it insightful, easy to read and very thought provoking. I am about to buy it for two friends who need it and who I hope will find it as useful as I did.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Long
Great points made but the author takes the long road to get to every point. This book should have been about 100 pages. You get the feeling while reading this that the author had to reach a certain word quota. If you have the time or like "wordiness", this book is for you. Otherwise, stay away. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Beginner or Refresher Source
This comprehensive guide to the legal office offers much to those who are just starting their careers as legal secretaries or for those who have been away from the field for a few years and need a refresher. In addition, secretaries in general law offices may find the specialty sections helpful when preparing documents for unusual situations. The information is more current than not and is clearly presented, including short glossaries of Latin and English legal terms. However, Ms. DeVries omitted criminal law practice from her areas of specialty section and neglected to discuss the various legal-specific software programs available.

    Recommended as a general source.

Informative, however it lacked several vocabulary items and court documents I was in need of. Also spent too much time on how to set up your office when my office had already been established. Overall though, a good reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone contemplating a career in MT!
As a medical transcription educator, I was thrilled to see this new book from George Morton. It is a realistic look at what the field of medical transcription has to offer ... the good and the bad. It's a worthwhile investment for anyone who is considering a career change to MT!

5-0 out of 5 stars A excellent, comprehensive, user friendly resource guide!
George Morton's HOW TO BECOME A MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTIONIST is a comprehensive, user friendly resource guide for all readers interested in pursuing a career in medical transcription. The book presents both the challenges and excitement of medical transcription and answers any questions the reader may have about this career choice. Morton, a nationally known expert in the field, gives an unbiased picture of the world of medical transcription, so the pros and cons of this career are discussed at length. He also provides a description of the necessary skills needed to become a successful transcriptionist and how to obtain those skills whether one chooses to work at home or in an office or hospital. This book is highly recommended for those people thinking about becoming a medical transcriptionist and for seasoned professionals interested in a well written book with extensive information and data about their field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cuts to the chase
George Morton did MT education a great service by writing this book. I was a perspective student, tired of trudging through all the commercial hype available on the internet regarding a career in MT. What I needed was a concise description of the day-to-day reality of transcription work. Morton provided it! He dispells the romantic visions of the perfect work-at-home-over-a-cup-of-coffee job; he describes the commitment required in obtaining an excellent foundation in medical terminology and pharmacology in order to perform transcription professionally and responsibly. He comments on the challenges of obtaining your first job when your resume is devoid of experience. He explains the grueling hours that can be involved in keeping up with private contracts to maintain happy customers. But he reinforces the truisms behind the IT-hype as well. You can work part-time. You can work from home. You can start your own profitable business - just be prepared to work. I loved this book for its impartial description of MT work - Thanks George!

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest Writing
I am just starting a medical transcription training course and this was one of the first books I bought. The book is very honest and straigh-forward and he doesn't try to sugar coat the aspects of the job. Gave me an honest look at what to expect.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Decent Review of Medical Transcription
This book is not "what you'll need to become a medical transcriptionist", as in books and equipment. Rather, it is a general "What is Medical Transcription?" along with things to think about while studying to be one.

I bought this book expecting the former but I'm not disapointed I read it. It explains the current situation in Medical Transcription as a job and answers questions like, "Is Medical Transcription right for me?" It also talks about the job itself and what one should expect - where does one work? are people paid well?

However, I am looking for a book that helps one study on their own to be a Medical Transcriptionst. Most courses seem pricey so I decided to just begin studying on my own. There are tapes of Medcial Dictation (with their transcripts) available on eBay. Unfortunatly, this book did not help too much in this regard except to ephasize the necessity of being competent with Medical Terminology and the importance of being certified by the AAMT.

If you're thinking about being a medical transcriptionst and want to read a gentle introduction to the field then this book is great but don't expect to read the exact steps to take for completing your own education. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A potent concoction of surefire tips and techniques
This is certainly one of the best books on public speaking I've read. The only other work that deserves special mention is Jack Valenti's Speak Up with Confidence. Walters gives surefire tips and techniques that are recipe for a successful presentation that may inspire for years.

Her crisp advice on the main requirements of a speech of "passion and compassion with a purpose" is very potent and often leaps off my mind each time I prepare to instruct or make a speech. Walters has carefully drawn from the "secrets" of public speaking pros and concocted them into a surefire formula for success. What's more, her anectdotes and quotes are both entertaining and memorable.

I found myself a better speaker even after reading and applying steps 1 and 2. Wait till I conquer step 11! Thank you Lilly Walters for an absolutely inspiring and terrific book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best public speaking books out there!
Excellent book for anyone who plans to do public speaking - whether it be for business, school, family reunions, or the like!

The author is the head of a major speaking bureau, so she knows what works and what doesn't. Otherwise, she wouldn't have any business. To improve on her perspective, she also interviewed 60 of the top paid speakers in the country and liberally quoted them in the text to this book. These quotes and examples are fascinating.

She assumes that you are not a famous paid speaker now, so builds her points as simply and clearly as possible -- as a top speaker would.

The book has one chapter that is worth 10 times the cost of the book -- how to overcome hostile audiences and problems that occur. I have never seen so many witty lines and fun things to do in an otherwise stressful situation! Mastering the material in this chapter would be enough to turn anyone into a confident speaker.

Ms. Walters uses the analogy of planting, nurturing and caring for a tree to explain her concepts of public speaking. That makes everything much more tangible and familiar.

At the end, she summarizes the most important points into four areas -- just in case you missed the punch line along the way.

I especially liked the way she used counterexamples to make her point. She describes and quotes Stew Leonard, Jr. who often does just the opposite of what the book suggests. But he is successful because he is authentic, cares for his audience, and is sincere.

Although I know a lot of public speakers, do paid public speaking myself, and read a lot about public speaking, I found that more than half of the material in this book was new to me. And it all made good common sense. So I'm converted!

Learn to enjoy speaking to others and to better serve them in grasping things you care about that will help them. It can be very rewarding personally and financially for them and you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lilly takes you by the hand tells you how to do it right.
This dynamite book is for every speaker; The beginner and the pro. Easy to read, easy to digest and follow tips for organization and delivery; she boils things down to the bottom line, the important takeaways from her own experience and the experiences of others. I began taking notes the minute I began to read. I wrote down things like: Make love to your audience. Stay green and growing for each new audience. Make fear your slave not your master. Turn every presentation over to the Lord. Watch our for ad libbing under stress. Approach each audience with an attitude of generous love. Replace fearful self worries with audience benefits. What do you want your listeners to do differently after they hear you? Tell yourself, "Today I get to do what I love to do." Now I take Lilly Walters wisdom with me every time I speak. It goes before me, stays with me helping and guiding me all along the way. Every time I am hit with 'dry mouth' before a speech, I think of Lilly and her lemon story. She showed me how to develop my own three important takeaways. Comments from my last presentation included words like 'she captivated her audience,' 'left them spellbound,' ''her message of help and hope was heard loud and clear' etc. Thanks Lilly. You helped me grow, you helped me conquer my fear, you helped me organize my material and most importantly, I will always remember your words, "Lord, let me be a channel of your love." That's what it is really all about. ... Read more

I love this book! Reading how the greatest motivational speakers motivate themselves--gets me motivated!

Zev Saftlas, Author of Motivation That Works: How to Get Motivated and Stay Motivated

PS I am a big fan of Jack Canfield. There is a lot of stuff from him and Mark V Hanson in this book. For example, here is a little excerpt from Jack:

"At my seminar I do a section on 'discovering your life's purpose'. We start off by hitting it from the external, then we eventually approach it from the inside. We get them to answer questions like: Who are you envious of?

I was envious of Kenny Rogers, the singer. I had to ask myself, what is it I am envious of? One, he brings pro-athletes down to his ranch in Virginia. He's got a football field, a baseball diamond, a basketball court, tennis court, all built in. He brings in John McEnroe from the tennis world, Larry Byrd from the Pacers, football players. They divide up into teams and have a mini Olympics type event all week. They play all day, then at night they get massages and have gourmet meals. Kenny is also a great portrait photographer, so he takes pictures of everyone. I thought, what is it that I envy about that? I realized it is that I love hanging out with people who are the best at what they do. It helped me realize my passion is for information, for sharing, for generosity, for making a difference.

I start with the envy question, then I ask, 'Think back in your life, when did you feel most alive? When did you feel most happy? When did you feel most loved? What was your greatest success? What was it about that success that made it a success?' As they answer these, people start to see some patterns
Finally, we ask, 'Who do you admire most on the planet alive or dead? If you could be anyone on the planet, who would you be?' If someone says Tony Robbins, that is a real different statement than Mother Teresa. It helps define what they want to express.

With their eyes closed I have them imagine they are climbing a mountain, they go into a temple, and this wise person comes and brings them a gift. As they open the gift, it will symbolically represent their life's purpose. People open it and get things like a children's book, this because they are supposed to write a children's book. Some get little poor kids looking up a them with hope, this because they are supposed to go empower those kids. People get in touch with their passion and their purpose." --Jack Canfield

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Book
Book has great ideas and ways to become a better public speaker. Very good overall.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read!
Lilly Walters focuses on the success stories of 19 top speakers and their hints for speaking well. She highlights their backgrounds, turning points and key sayings, and then provides tips on becoming a top speaker using their methods for developing and giving effective presentations. Hearing what these speakers say about the principles of good speechmaking is interesting, but their "insider" tips are pretty obvious, even to an outsider. Most of their advice is widely known within the speaking industry and is presented here repetitively. Don't be put off by the "read this resume" nature of the initial introductions, because they put the speakers in context and show their success. We [...] recommend this book to virgin public speakers or those who want a refreshing booster, to those who book big-name talkers, or to those who like to read recreationally about celebrities and their ideas.

This book is a gem that is filled with ideas from many of THE BEST speakers in the world. What a great resource! 5-0 out of 5 stars New #1On Speaking: Battle Tested Stuff
I have read and reviewed 30+ books on public speaking. It is the best. This can be read as a success motivational book or as the best ways to develop public speaking skills. Either way it is a spectacular book. It may be a long time before I find a better book on public speaking.

The game plan for this book is profoundly astute. These interviews(the best motivational speakers) are brilliant and well done. Mr. Jeffreys does not brag about his access to the super successful-he just goes after the meat and delivers it in a very direct style. The author commits to only interview motivational speakers famous through speaking. Bravo! He excludes anybody becoming famous and then becoming a motivational speaker. This assures you: The book is battle tested stuff. Each (30 page + or -) chapter on the fifteen speakers are standalone pieces that can be read in any order. Each chapter has an excellent summary list of secrets for review or rereading.

A layout technique that greatly improves the books readability is: Mr. Jeffreys comments are the full width of the page, but when he is paraphrasing or quoting one of the interviewed Superstars the left and right margins are slightly smaller. If you don't care, it does not slowdown the reading, but when you do care just check the margins. Not being a slave to an exact quote and telling the story as Jeffreys sees it makes this book very readable. Jeffreys appears constantly faithful to the intent of the superstar. Not once does he preach or challenge the superstar's thoughts. I found no author clues to his favorite speaker or preferred techniques.

Book is full of speech improvement techniques. It encourages a high level of enthusiasm and to aggressively experiment with audience participation. Book provides a convincing case for being exactly the person and speaker you want to be and not compare yourself to other successful speakers as there is lots of room for new speakers that are authentic and original. Excellent advice on finding coaching that helps you be you and not someone else even if they do not have strong speaking experience.

It shows persistence in providing motivation without being preachy. The critical role of self esteem-a major problem for Americans-is discussed. Great advice on creating and maintaining your personality on and off the podium. It is full of business advice for the speaking for money person. The strongest point for me was market your topic not you as a person.

The first chapter on Tony Robbins is surprisingly good. Apparently Robbins is the most financially successful motivational speaker of all time, Jeffreys strips away all the clutter and low class appeal of Tony Robbins to give the secrets of success that can be applied more broadly with out becoming like the shop worn, over exposed Tony Robbins. But this is a great chapter.

Some superstars have been so over exposed that their enthusiasm seems shallow and insincere, yet enthusiasm and humor are so critical to successful speaking there is still a lot to be learned from each of these superstar speakers. Their most commonly sighted defense against the over exposed speaker being a turn off is to know your subject better than anybody else and be current and relevant to the audience. Many of the superstars have examples to constantly test yourself for being the same person before and after a speech as you are in the speech. Many make the point that: While you may perform with the benefit of acting techniques, you must be only one character-- the real you.

The second chapter on Dyer. He borrows from the Eastern religions with out any reference. Dyer seems afraid he will alienate the Western religion oriented person. Why be concerned? Eastern religions are twice as old as Christianity and contributed richly. Dyer may want to give the impression they are Dyer generated insights but the reader could be alerted that he is drawing on a vast amount of revered literature from the East. It was one of my favorite chapters.

Brian Tracy reveals a fanatic for a detailed plan, and think positive no mater what. Tracy takes positive thinking to an obsessive level. He would replace positive thinking by positive knowing.

Art Linkletter was famous before he started relying on speaking as his dominant source of income. Why he violates the rule of only writing on those that first became famous through speaking is never explained. It is clear that he likes Linkletter and shows him to be on of the down to earth famous people of all time. Linkletter confesses fame is the easiest way to be a full time money making speaker. Second to fame the most important factor is to practice and practice. Third is to take an intense interest in each individual when ever possible.

Leo Buscaglia different than many other speakers cares so much about making a personalized connection that he is uniquely approachable after a speech. It is noted that his 13 books have sold 18 million copies and "Loving Each Other" was one of the better selling books of the 1980's. It is interesting that the last chapter is on this great contributor to the study of: "how to be a better you."
