2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing learned. A bit of pronunciation gleened perhaps.
This thankfully brief lesson in Latin offers very little in the way of actual instruction. The pauses between speakers is too short to repeat the phrases they are purportedly trying to teach you.

The cassettes do give the listener a simplistic language lesson in the applications of Latin and you can pick up on some aspects of both classic and modern church Latin pronunciation through the rapid attempts to repeat the phrases offered.

My biggest complaint is that many of the phrases are far too long to be repeated all at once, yet the speaker does not pause in the middle to let you repeat portions of it.

Overall, i would say these lessons are not actually for learning Latin, rather for picking out bits and pieces of Latin that you already know.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better resources.
This is a good tool for learning about Latin phrases used in English. However, I have found more comprehensive tools for learning Latin pronunciation for free on the Web.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misrepresentation
This is not very helpful in learning Latin. It is helpful in learning latin phrases used sparaticly thoughout english.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for pronunciation, but not much else...
Though Latin is usually thought of as a written language rather than a spoken one, learning to pronounce a language is a very helpful tool for learning. If this is all you are looking for, you are in the right place. Many examples are given of both secular and church prounciation, but don't expect to find any kind of grammar or other language instruction. This is a resource soley for those that are learning Latin from a book and want to know more about how it should be pronounced. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good way to start out with a second language for kids
I bought this set for my 5 year-old and 8 year-old. For the most part, they and I like it, but I must admit it takes a wee bit of getting used to. You won't be able to just put the tape on and walk away with this set, you'll need to sit with your kids and go through it together. But if you're willing to do that you'll reap some very real benefits, and your kids will too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Learning for the Young
This is a great set to introduce Spanish to young kids. I have been using it with my four year old with great success. The book and cassette compliment each other well and really hold his attention. Each chapter contains several simple yet creative games to help reinforce the vocabulary and phrases being taught and ends with an on-going story in the form of a cartoon. I enjoy the program too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Spanish for Children (Passport Books)
This is a wonderful program that I have successfully used with children from kindergarten through grade three. The kids love the songs and games. It's lively and a lot of fun. Just what learning should be!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Effective!
This is a great way to introduce your children (and yourself) to Spanish. The book is colorful with lots of songs and games. The cassette recordings are very clear and the instructor is warm and cheerful. My 5-year-old daughter and I absolutely loved this! The only problem is, now that we have finished it we are looking for the next step. Highly recommended. P.S. My daughter often serenades us in the morning with her Spanish songs. ... Read more

This set is a decent value. For your money, you get a fairly broad range of phrases and vocabulary. However, the organization of information assumes that you can keep interest listening to a bunch of discrete phrases repeated one after the other with no conversations or anything remotely natural. If you can, in fact, maintain interest while listening to these tapes repeatedly, then you'll do well with this set. If, on the other hand, you need something more dynamic, you might do well to look elsewhere. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars NICE SONGS FOR KIDS BUT TITLE IS MISLEADING
I recently ordered this book/CD combo. Good news first. The nice part about this product is the fact that you get 19 kids songs in English, which is quite a good value for the price that one pays. Now the bad news. Problem is that there is really no real teaching of English vocabulary anywhere. Although letters of the alphabet and numbers are recited in English (and this part only lasts a few seconds), nowhere on the book or on the CD can one find recited or written English on organized subjects such as animals, colors, basic pronouns (I, you, he, she) etc. (Well to be fair one dog and one cat are each mentioned once in the book). But no such thing as "This is a dog" or "This is a mouse" or This is a frog" kind of list is available. So, summing up, if you want a nice collection of English children songs, you may want to try this. However, if you want to teach your child basic English words and vocabulary, go somewhere else. ... My kids in class LOVED these chants and were always ready to learn more. I had tryed everything in my ESL classes to get my youngest ones to speak more. These chants gave them confidence and FUN. This material can be used with any program and will add lots of spice!

3-0 out of 5 stars Songs That Stay With You...and Don't Go Away
Jazz Chants for Children's content stays with you for a long time. It simply does not go away. A person could be walking down the street, then suddenly start singing..."Shh, shh, baby's sleeping." They're good tools for teaching ESL, but the content of the chants would drive an English speaker insane. Although many of the chants are happy and cheerful, many of them seem hostile. When purchasing for your child, use caution. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ideal source if you need to quickly learn Italian.
This resource guide (including two audio cassettes) is ideal if you are going to be traveling to Italy and you need to learn/brush up on some general expressions, but if you want to learn the language (in-depth) and form your own sentences, then this is not the best source. In it you will find basic phrases needed for communicating in a foreign country. The topics covered include the alphabet, numbers, time, general expressions, hotel and restaurant needs, transportation, communications, and emergency situations. The tapes are very clear and each phrase is spoken once in English and then translated twice in Italian. Overall, for not knowing any Italian, it has provided me with a "window view" (if you will) of the langauge, however I will be searching for something alittle more detailed on sentence structure and forming my own sentences in the future. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Little Women
LITTLE WOMEN.

Very good reading, fiction romantic and interesting, sad at times, exciting and enjoyable.

It is all about four sisters in the March family, growing up in the U.S.A., about a hundred and fifty years ago, during the American Civil War.

Louisa May Alcott Authoress was born in Pennsylvania 1832. Little Women was published in 1868 and was a huge success.

The book reflects of the personal experiences of her own family. It reads better than we expected and is a real classic of American children's literature.

The book was made first into a black and white silent film in 1918 and most recently in 1994 into a colour film with Wionona Rayder as Jo.

It is not a bit sensational but simple and true.
Lets hope all of you people over the world will enjoy "Little Women" as much as we did. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Teach your toddlers to talk (in other languages)
I purchased this lovely introductory tape and played it for my son, who was then about 18 months old. He adored it, and sang along with it, and asked me questions about it - so much so that the tape just plum wore out! So I am now ordering another one in Hebrew, and one in Russian, too. I believe that learning language arts through song and interesting narrative is an effective tool - it's enjoyable rather than tedious for the child. The fact that the narratives are voiced by children is also very important, as I think children prefer to hear young voices just like theirs. Teach Me Tapes are a job well done! Wish I'd thought of doing it myself! ... Read more

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

Look ma, no textbooks! The Learn in Your Car series treats you like a child--in the best possible way--starting with one-word phrases ("please," "good-by"), counting exercises, and simple nouns ("bus," "train") designed to imitate a child's learning process. First you hear the words in English, then they are repeated slowly in clear, unaccented pronunciations. The method is extremely effective for those who don't know a thing, or for those who want to brush up by testing themselves when the English words are spoken. The tapes emphasize the building blocks of communicating in a foreign country rather than rote phrases that only apply on the tape and not in real-life exchanges. Level 1 painlessly covers basic verb forms, essential prepositions, near future and past tenses, as well as shopping, hotel reservations, and other travel-related situations. The series includes French, German, Italian, Russian, Japanese, and Spanish in three levels that can be purchased individually or in boxed sets. Each level contains two 90-minute cassettes (or CDs) and an accompanying booklet (not for use behind the wheel) with helpful explanations and scripts for the lessons. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad for beginners
I'm preparing for my trip back to Japan, and thought these tapes would help me remember what I was fluent in as a child, so I skipped the first edition.

I listened to level 2 tapes a few times, and after not recognizing the words they were saying, and then realizing they were using phrases I'd never use, for example "i am not your friend", I figured out I bought the wrong tapes.

The phrases are said in English first, and then in Japanese, but the Japanese is so fast that you don't have a chance to mimic the sentence, and if you do, you don't know how to break down the meaning of each part of the sentence.Maybe I should have bought level 1, but I really don't think I need to learn how to say things they were trying to teach.

I bought the 1993 version of Henry N. Raymond's cassettes, but I'm not sure the current version is any different!

I've since found a great book for beginners called Japanese in 10 Minutes a Day.It is easy to learn, fun, and really does take 10 minutes a day! ... Read more

This is a fantastic course on Japanese pronunciation. All of the relevant features of the phonology of the language are covered. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not fantastic - but it entertained my kids!
Contrary to other opinions, my girls loved this tape! The songs are difficult to interpret -- at first -- but with careful listening (and French ears hear some slips into English) & reinforcement by an adult, children CAN learn French words & phrases with this music. The "Days of the Week" song is one of our favorites. As with any language, perseverance pays off --...

1-0 out of 5 stars Dreadful
I borrowed this from the library before buying, and am I ever glad I didn't shell out the money for this program. The music is tinny and the singing tuneless. The words are more often shouted than sung. The children's pronunciation is awful, even to my non-native ear. Finally, the constant back-and-forth between French and English only confuses; immersion in the target language is the better choice, particularly for children. ...

2-0 out of 5 stars My 3-year-old daughter did not like it.
I purchased this audio book to have fun with my daughter, listening to the songs in another language.First, the pronunciation is not clear.I believe that a language audio tape must have extra crystal clear pronunciation. The voice of the boy who sings in this tape is not as clean as the ones from any of the Barney tapes.I would not know it is because of the recording, but when the songs are in chorus, the pronunciation gets worse.I have zero idea about French, but I do not think it is entirely my fault that I cannot sing any part along when I try to pronounce any words.A girl or a woman who can sing like a little girl would have been a better choice.Second, the songs are neither popular nor easy ones.I do not know whether they are popular in France, or just I never heard of the songs. In any case, my daughter instantly lost interest even though I made her listen to the tape twice.(It was her first non-English tape.)Third, the way of how the songs are sung is not as fun.The songs are sung in English and French alternatively, and I think it reduces the fun.My daughter loves the songs like the Barney songs and Miss Mary Mac that are organized in a way that keeps children interested. In this tape, mostly one boy or the chorus of boys sings in a similar way throughout. It may be suitable for who already know French. ... This is an excellent way to start learning Russian, even if you don't spend that much time in your car.
