Not worthy of the Berlitz name
I love most Berlitz courses. This one, however, really stinks. The book is fine, but the cassette is geared toward the first time traveler. There are NO business terms discussed. NONE. It is fine if you want a hotel room or if you want to order dinner, but your [lost] if you want to learn how to say graph, PC, marketing, production, ect... There are other tapes out there that handle this topic MUCH better. ... Read more

A good start
This book was used as the text for a "Conversational Italian" class I took. There are a few small errors in the book, typos and such, which the teacher was aware of. (Nothing that will get you in trouble.) Its big selling point is that it is mostly aimed at tourists, making it a good choice for people whose main purpose in learning Italian is to get along while traveling.

A good course
It`s a pretty clear and informative Italian course for beginners - a good combination of basic grammar and useful vocabulary. Though it`s still better to use some audio course I would still recommend this one.

Well, that`s a pretty good course - pretty clear and informative. I would recommend it as one of the best ones.

Great
This is broken down really well for you and is basically part book- part workbook. There are plenty of activities to take part in to help you learn this language. However it doesn't get a five because it doesn't come with a tape, though 4 are available to go with it for over 30 dollars. Also, you only learn present and imperative tenses, which may have been more complicated to learn but it should be in there if you want to concern yourself with it. It is really informative and amusing and holds your attention. It does this by keeping the lessons quick and to the point with a little humor here and there. Remember that Learning Italian and learning Italian for sake of a quick bout of tourism ''just enough'' to get by... very different things. As for just the bout of tourism, this is more than enough to get you by and would work great. As for grasping the whole language, if you really feel you need to... you'd not only need the past tense and so on, but you'd definetely need alot of cassettes for example and the ability to read whole paragraphs with ease. This won't get you there, but it'll teach you the basic language.

Finally, a language book with clear pronunciations!
I gave "Learn Italian..." five stars not because it's absolutely the best beginner's language book I've ever seen (though it's up there), but because it is that rare find in low-priced foreign language aids that explains how to pronounce words phoenetically (eg, come = KOH-meh). This feature may seem unnecessary to some, but I learn faster reading a word correctly, and hearing myself say it correctly. I also realize this feature does not supplant listening to tapes of native Italian speakers, but I enjoy being able to look at the text and see the word broken down, and then repeatedly work on my pronunciation from there. Call me crazy.

The book is very well organized, broken up into numerous 15-minute lessons, allowing you to clearly see your progress as you work at any pace you choose. Additionally, this book provides a cool set of removable vocabulary "flash cards" in the back, organized by subject (family, travel, food), w/ Italian on one side & English on the back. I've truly enjoyed learning with this book. All in all, I feel it is a solid, entertaining tool for the beginner, and well worth the small investment. ... Read more

A challenge
This book needs some work if it's going to be useful to anyone just beginning Greek.I gave up after about 5 lessons...and I'm fairly adept at learning languages.

really awful
I guess this book would rate one star because the cover is pretty.Otherwise it is so sloppily written and disorganized as to be unusable.Not only do words appear in the exercises that are not in the glossary in back,there are English to Greek exercises where the necessary Greek words have not been provided. More than once an English-to-Greek translation requires a grammatical construction (i.e., different case endings or different tense/mood) that hasnot been introduced. The tapes devote about four times as much airtime as necessary to the Greek alphabet (which is not at all difficult to learn) before they, too, wander off into the ozone. Many important questions of usage and grammar are dismissed as being "beyond the scope of this book."Almost anything beyond the Greek alphabet seems to be beyond the scope of this book.

I know this is harsh, but this book could be a real confidence-destroyer for some who hasn't had much experience withlanguages.

OK if have Greek bckgrd
Personally, I purchased this book & cassettes because I am going to Greece this summer and wanted to brush up on my skills. (I already know Greek somewhat well) I found the book to be useful for some things butquite disorganized in others. I bought this book primarilly because of thetapes. However, sometimes the lessons aren't very informative or helpful. Ithink the only reason I am understanding the book is because I already knowGreek a little. If I was just starting out with Greek I would have no ideawhat was going on...

Needs a teacher
I was baffled by the way the vocabulary for the reading pasaages was arranged.A list at the beginning and list at the end in no particular order. Not all the words are glossed, even in the vocabulary at the back ofthe book. The book gives no indication which passages are on the cassette.The cassette contains too much irrelevant English filler.

Look for updated version
There is a later edition of this fine book/audio combination that came out in January of 1995.Ms. Watts has been around the Greek language and its instruction for quite awhile under different publishing houses and hasconsistenly produced fine instructional material.The Colloquial series byRoutledge and the Greek in Three Months by Hugo series are both done by Ms.Watts.If you can, go to your local bookstore and compare the Colloquial,the Greek in Three Months and the Teach Yourself Series.While each isfairly comprehensive, one may be more suited to your liking.The Hugoseries was updated in 1998, so at the time of this writing, Nov. '99, it isMs. Watts' most recent offering.Whatever you do, always get the audiocompanion to the book. ... Read more

Must get it with the cassette tapes
This book is quite basic and should give the reader a good introduction to the slovene language, but it is only that.The small glossary at the end of the book helps with gender and conjugation, and most of the general rules for grammar are introduced.If you really want to learn Slovene, I suggest you start with this book, then get a dictionary like Komac's (which wont tell you anything about conjugation or gender) and finally an extensive grammar guide like Peter Harrity's book (which fills in the complex gaps left behind by the other two books).I suppose if you don't want to spend so much money, just buy this book, but do get the audio tapes so you can understand the pronunciation and get some good practice in.

The book is very readable, but contains exercises at the end of each lesson (with answers at the end of the book).It is set up much like a textbook and includes some penned illustrations to keep the mood light.Don't expect it to take you long to make it entirely through the book, though.Actually this book will get you through all of the essentials for a ski trip or a short holiday.Enjoy! ... A very good reference if you plan to visit Israel.
I found the cassette and phrase book well organized and easy to use, and especially appreciated the fact that the people on the cassette speak everyday Hebrew. It is a "phrase book," but I would have liked a little more in the way of grammar, and a more extensive dictionary, but overall I found it to be very useful. A word of caution: if you don't know any Hebrew at all, you need to put in a bit of time familiarizing yourself with the pronunciation guide and the way the book works, and memorizing the most common phrases, rather than just taking it with you and expecting to be able to use it in Israel with no preparation. ... Poor coordination
It was very difficult to follow along in the book while listening to the CDs. The activities often times did not match what was shown in the book at all. This was very frustrating! The book could have done a much better job at explaining what you were hearing on the CD.

Very well elaborated, but does not make you think in french
This is an excellent book, especially for the beginner. It is richly illustrated, and there are a lot of situations and topics explained. But, personally, I think this kind of method helps you only to a certain extent. I prefer the books like Langenscheidt's French in 30 hours or French without Toil by Assimil, which make you think in the language, by means of repetition and extensive use of grammar structures and vocabulary, in humorous and interesting situation lessons. I was a little disappointed since I intended to improve my French and I though this one would be more advanced. All I managed to get was a brush-up on a few topics. It is a pity...

The most complete French study guide for any level!
It doesn't matter whether you're a beginner, who has not spoken a work of French, or an advanced learner, who can manage to throw bits of conversation in the language here and there, the techniques employed in this study guide set prove to be invaluable in your study of French. Guided by four of Berlitz's French books (learner's guide, course book, verb handbook, and phrase book), you can easily breeze your way through the four 60-minute cassettes. It works best for me when I listen to the tapes per lesson unit twice before going through the same lesson with the study guides. Once I finish the lesson (with tapes and books together), I listen to the tapes again until I master--repeat, master--the lesson. Then I go to the next.
