Step-Up is designed as a single-volume, concise yet comprehensive review book for 2nd year medical students preparing for the USMLE Step 1. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible
This book is the bible of basic medical science. It incorporates everything you need to know into a concise, systems-based format. It is easy to read, and is great to use as you go through the systems in your first two years. Don't wait until board prep to buy this book! Use it all along to see what information is truly "high-yield".

4-0 out of 5 stars A better review than First Aid
The great advantage of this book is the system-based approach. First Aid is merely a list of facts to memorize out of context, which will not help you on the vignettes in the actual test. Step up reviews the anatomy, embryology, physio, and path of each major system -- which will help you to see the big picture and be able to take a unified approach to each boards question instead of trying to remember individual pearls. It does, however, lack a great review in terms of Biochem, Behavioral Science, and Pharm, so I would supplement with the High Yield series.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice diagrams & layout but....Be careful!
Since i'm a relatively old IMG I was delighted when I discovered this book, so I bought it and I personally used it for my step 1 preparation, FORTUNATELY I discovered it late.....since if I'd have trusted just in this book (I mean without First Aid)..I'd have failed....so b VERY careful....if u use this book for specific clinical situations (their tables in anemia, different cancer types etc) its great...but eventhough u will need first aid as a guide for the remainder. In my exam physiology and pharmacology were heavily tested and these guys almost forgot these subjects, on the other hand their pathology is excellent. Their pharmacology is quite poor, they ignored mechanisms of action of the different drugs (quite HY in USMLE). So if u use this book being aware of these problems and especially as a quick review only before the exam it should be OK.

5-0 out of 5 stars High Yield
I used this book in addition to the Kaplan series. I felt this was ideal in the week prior to the exam, and was superior to first aid. There are several mistakes in the text, but between this text and kaplan I crushed the exam. I would not recommend this text to anyone who is weak in pharmacology!

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes
While this book actually does represent a major step up
in terms of detail compared to the "Gold Standard" First Aid for Usmle, the current print seems little premature to me (even though it states to be a "Revised Reprint", since I could find a substantial number of significant mistakes while just going through it ONCE. Since I am not really an expert, I would bet
that someone with a more thorough background knowledge in Pathology, Biochemistry and Behavioral Sciences for example

would find countless more mistakes than I did.

Generally I would recommend this book only to people, who are VERY advanced in their studies for the Step 1, so that they can be sure to filter out these substantial mistakes and do not attempt to memorize wrong stuff. But then again : why would you buy a review book, if you knew already everything so perfectly that you could immediately recognize these mistakes ?

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I am taking Stat 244 after taking the first class 5 years ago. I needed a review to catch up, but I am finding that this is much more comprehensible than the textbook and the instructor. Nice and straight forward... Makes you wonder why you need to spend $80+ for a used textbook in college when you can learn it more efficiently from this little guy... THANK YOU!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Cliff's Quick Review of Statistics
Cliff's Quick Review of Statistics is a good supplement
to any Stat course, and should be kept as a reference.
Good intro text. It ought to be required.

For non-quantitative concepts, presented for the layman,
get the classic "How to Lie With Statistics" by Huff.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good condensed review
This book is a condensed review of statistics, without laborious examples. It can be used as a refresher or supplement to a more verbose introductory primer. It is perfect for a high school or a one semester introductory stats course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Statistics Made Comfortable
One of the best summaries of basic statistics: this is how I see this brief book. It gets straight to the point without unnecessary verbiage and irrelevant exercises cooked up by authors of some enormous volumes on statistics that serve to confuse and intimidate rather than teach. This book won't give you detailed explanations of statistical concepts, but there is enough here to supply any beginner with a lot of good understanding of basic statistical techniques, and the book will give an intermediate user a nicre refresher course.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for a partial review
This book reviews the basics of "descriptive" statistics very well. Because of this, it is great for the intro stats student. Although it touches on regression, it does not cover the analytical areas very well.

So, if you only have that high school or one semester stats course to get through, buy this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for USMLE 3
I bought this book and took the exam. The proof is in the outcome- I did great. The book is well written and covers all of the topics well. The questions are not impossibly hard and seem to mimic the exam format well--in fact, some of the questions were similar to the ones on the actual exam. I would HIGHLY recommend this book. I think it is far more useful than the Crush step 3 book.

3-0 out of 5 stars NMS Review for the USMLE Step 3 (Book with CD-ROM)
this book is well written but not good enough for the step 3. the management part is not enough. questions are easy and more look like step 2 and not the step 3. I think it is very good for the step 2 preparetion. I compared this book with crush step 3, kaplan Q BANK, passfirst MCQ, Mosbey's ACE the board and step 3 instant. in one word as a prepared student for the step 3 I do not recommend this book for the step 3 preparation as long as there are better sources.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's enough
Great!!!
I used this book as the sole source for step 3 (sometimes a little bit of Crush Step 3) and was more than enough. Use it if you as myself were exposed to peds, gyn, psych and other stuff some years ago. The book is most current and well written with good pictures but does not get 5 stars because the questions do not reflect the actual USMLE-MCQ style but it was not a major problem.
It is written in 5 practice test with total 750 questions that cover most of the topics tested in step 3; it is coming with a company CD ROM that to be honest I never used, has the same questions as in the book.
In summary a great buy and was really good for me. You do not need anything else.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need
I am an internal medicine resident at Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia and our program is very busy. I have very time to read but Dr. Rosner, whom I work with in the past, gave me a copy of his book to review prior to taking Step 3. I went over the questions and awnsers over two weeks and passed the test easily. It is very complete, easy to read, and the format is very similar in nature to the test itself. The book is very much like the man himself, perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF ALL
I used this book and CRUSH step 3 and found that the NMS review was far superior. The proof is in the outcome and I passed the exam with >90 percentile. Some of the material in this book is nearly identical to that seen on the exam. The answers are up to date, thorough and educational (even for internship in general). I highly recommend. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Breathing New Life into Ancient History
As a history major, I have always prided myself on the fact that I could find fascinating a subject that left many bored. However, when we began my daughter's first grade history lessons using the "Usbourne Book of World History" (using the lesson plan laid out in the excellent "Well Trained Mind" by Susan Wise Bauer and Jessie Wise), even I found the material a bit dry; it is, after all, an encyclopedia. Apparently, Susan Wise Bauer felt similarly about its limitations, as she went out and wrote her own history tome. "The Story of the World" is so fantastic, it takes my breath away! The read aloud text on ancient times presents history in small chunks, and is written in an engaging, story-like manner that delights my children, who are 4 and 6 years old. This delightful manner in no way means that the subject matter is "watered down"; Bauer still introduces children to the facts and terminology that are relevant to the subject. For instance, the chapter on "The First Writing" explains the origins and meanings of "hierolglyphics", "Mesopatamia", "cuneiform", and "papyrus".
After listening in rapt pleasure to the text, children will delve into the accompanying curriculum guide and activity book. The guide provides thought provoking questions on the text, and offers an example of the type narration that the child should give (the child is expected to briefly narrate back to the parent what they just read about in the text). The guide book provides map work, coloring pages, puzzles, and review cards which can be copied from the book for use, and also includes wonderful craft ideas (most of which, as an inherently lazy person, I found very "do-able" without undue effort). This week, we carved a cuneiform monogram into clay, made a hieroglyphic scroll on paper, and left them outside to see which will prove to be more durable over time; this will illustrate to the children why the papyrus documents of Egypt did not survive the centuries, but the older cuneiform tablets of Sumer did. For our next project, we plan on mummifying a chicken from the grocery store using the directions from the guide.
I love this history program, and history is now my daughter's favorite subject. I can't wait for Ms. Bauer to write the next volume (this volume covers earliest nomads to the fall of the Roman Empire). The only downside is that the cirriculum guide comes as a thick packet of pages, rather than being bound into a book. However, the pages have pre-cut holes and are easily stored a binder, and this makes it very easy to copy pages from the guide. ... I feel that this course would be a bargain at twice the price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Simplistic Language - Not Suitable for Bright Students
What a disappointment! My lower elementary children do not need the detail in this book and my older children find the tone condescending. I'd be embarrassed to read this to my children. Classical education implies a higher standard. Latin, Greek and the very best books from homeschooling are our inheritance from the best-selling book, The Well-Trained Mind. Unfortunately, the author disappoints us with simplistic language. If you are familiar with Christian Liberty Press' lower elementary science and history readers, you'll recognize the dumbed-down writing. Example from page 158: "Here are some Greek letters: A This is called an 'alpha.' If you think it looks like an A - you're right! It sound like and A too. The alphabet that we use today borrowed many of its letters from the ancient Greeks!" For older elementary students or bright children, these books are unsuitable because of excessive reliance on conjuntions and fragmented conversational tone. The detail is too thick for younger children. A Child's History of the World by Hillyer is much better for early elementary students. Save your money, skip this book and its sister activity guide and do unit studies like those from Christian Cottage Curriculum or do KONOS. Another idea: go to a Junior College and get a world history book on the used table, or get the history books with student notebooks from from Bob Jones Press. I had high hopes and am saddened to have wasted our money on this and the activity guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Story of the World, Part 1 on CD
My children couldn't wait for the car to start, and the Story of the World to come on. For my older son, it reminded him of history that he had learned in school. For my younger son, it has developed a sense of curiosity and interest in history. I just ordered "part 2" to be enjoyed during a long car trip this summer. We all appreciated the way that each continent was represented at the same period of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Book!
My children and I absolutely loved this book and the activity guide. We homeschool (1st grade and K) and the length of each story and the content kept my kids entranced. Granted, some of the material was beyond their comprehension, but we plan on coming back in a couple of years and doing all the time periods again and more in-depth. Ancient history has become a favorite subject around here. My oldest ran in breathlessly yesterday that he saw a commercial about the Trojan War, and my kindergartener loves to point out all the Ionic, Doric, and Corinthian columns he sees around town. I loved having a chance to learn all the world history I missed in school (I was an A-student in an excellent school district and got a bachelor's degree) and being able to spark an interest in history for my children. I also enjoyed learning about the other civilizations that don't get very much coverage in the textbooks, like African, Indian, and Central and South American. The activity guide was wonderful in that it had so many creative and fun ideas for each chapter that you were not stuck with just mapwork and a coloring page. My boys loved acting out the stories in the book: making "fur" nomad bags and collecting lizards for lizard stew; creating a living Nile river; building their own giant pyramid; creating a Red Sea diorama with a shoebox, army men, and plastic ocean figures; building a labrinyth and minotaur; hosting the Olympic Games and having a Greek feast; building an aquaduct; having a tiger hunt, and we're still not finished with the book! I feel like I finally have a better grip on the whole picture of ancient history. Bravo, Susan, we can't wait for the next one!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and engaging!
I was unsure at first how I would like the audiobooks since the cornerstone of our education at home is reading aloud. I was pleasantly surprised, however, at how entranced my oldest child, the fidgety one, became as she listened. I didn't even ask her to listen, she joined me in the kitchen as I was reviewing the audiobooks, and this speaks mountains about the product.

The audio CDs are individually stored in plastic slide-in sleeves, which are packed in a durable plastic binder-type case. The discs are well-labeled with the chapter number and title. The track listing on the CDs don't match with the chapter numbers, which can be confusing; for example, chapter 1 is covered on tracks 4, 5 and 6 of disc 1. The insert, however, has a complete listing of the chapters and track numbers to facilitate programming.

The insert also contains two indexes which are extrememly helpful. The first lists the exact location you can find the chapters about individuals (example: the lesson on Alexander the Great is on CD 4, tracks 8-10.) The second index is a quick reference of stories (example: the story of Romulus and Remus is found on CD 4, track 14.)

The audiobooks feature an engaging and energizing musical score as a break between chapters. Listening to the narrator is like having a professional storyteller in your home. The narrator speaks with a natural, even tone.

The audiobook version of SOTW is pleasant enough for daily use and is interesting enough not to drive you crazy on a long drive. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best wireless books I've read
Planet3 Wireless does a great job keeping this vendor neutral. It's everything you'll need to pass the CWNA test. Even if you don't want to go through the certification process, you'll find this book covers wireless LAN's from A-Z. I've had the pleasure of meeting one of the writers of this book and was very impressed by his knowledge of the wireless industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book for Wireless Networking!
Why limit yourself to vendor specific wireless networking certifications? This book covers all aspects of wireless networking not just specific vendor specifications and protocalls. This is the book to read to prepare yourself for the CWNA exam. This book will cover all areas on the CWNA exam as well as provide you with complete practice questions. The CWNA is quickly becoming the industry standard certification for wireless networking, because it encompasses all aspects of wireless networking and is one of the first networking certification that is not vendor specific. So why limit yourself to vendor specific training and certification when the CWNA can help you prepare for all aspects of the rapidly growing wireless networking industry. I would greatly recomend this book to anyone thinking about entering or expanding into wireless networking. I would also recomend that anyone thinking of entering the Networking industry highly consider training in wireless networking because it is a constantly and rapidly growing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Passed Exam on First Attempt
This is an excellent book; informative and easy to read. I used the book, several practice exams and hands-on experience to prepare for the exam.

Although I passed with the first try, about 75% of the questions were very difficult (for me). After reading remarks posted on the Internet from other test-takers, I figured that I needed to review this book a few more times.

It turned out to be a valuable resource, but should be supplemented with additional reading materials and practice exams. I agree with a previous review that the book should have included the chapter questions on a CD based practice exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Guide for PW0-100
I've had the opportunity to correspond with Devin Akin on a couple of technical issues and he really knows his stuff. This book only touches on the knowledge at Planet3 but prepares you well for exam PW0-100. I've read a number of technical study guides and unlike some, this one cuts to the heart of the subject. It's 541 pages of wireless fundamentals, theory and practices in nothing short of a clear presentation. It covers everything from WLAN architecture and security to governing organizations and standards. The book does an excellent job of putting the comprehensive (relatively new) technologies of wireless networking into a concise but very informative perspective. I actually sat for CWNA last year but I studied this book then read through the online practice tests and it was enough to pass the exam. I look forward to hearing more from Devin and Planet3 Wireless.

5-0 out of 5 stars You rock Devin!
After being in the IT business for 9 years I have read a lot of books. I can honestly say this is the best IT book I have ever read. Mr. Akin definitely knows how to write a book! I just ordered the CWSP book and hope it is as well written as this book. Much thanks to Devin for finally writing an IT book that didn't put me asleep and helping me pass the test the first time!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not complete
I bought these books thinking I could use them to supplement my existing knowlege of Microsoft Products so that I could take my certification tets and pass them on my first try. After taking three the three certification tests I have discovered that the exams test you on material that is not even mentioned in the book. When the exam is made up of as few as 35 questions, not being prepared for even one makes a big difference. I would recommend that people preparing for Microsoft certifications try the books from Microsoft Press instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great books...and Eval version of 2003 to boot
I have to admit I was truely impressed with these books. I used these study guides to get my MCSE in NT, but skipped getting my 2000 certification. Now that my employeer has decided to upgrade to 2003, I thought now was the time for me to upgrade as well.

I just picked up these books, and was truely impressed. Not only do they provide me with the background, as well as the hands on needed, they come with some excellent tools on the CD includeing an invaluable network simulator and an evaluation version of the Windows 2003 OS.

What I truley like about these titles is that they don't leave you hanging. Far too often, a book does not go as in depth as necessary. Not these book. Each topic is reinforced with hands on exercises, so you can practice what you learn. A tremendous resource for anybody, beginner to experience, if you ask me. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Cliff's Review
I disagree with the poster who was giving the Cliff's CSET book such a glowing review. A CSET test taker knows a bad study guide after having taken and seen a real exam.

As with the majority of the posters here, I agree that the content of the Cliff's Notes fell short of meeting the contents for subtest I, II, and III. The material presented in the Cliff's Notes, is either based on a loosely outline format, or will contain sporadic information that is basically a rehash of the contents of its previous edition (MSAT). If you really need to study for these tests, you CAN include the Cliff's Notes, but only use it as a last minute review. The sample tests in the Cliffs Notes are just exercises, and do not reflect the real CSET multiple subject test in question format or content. Hirsch's book (and yes, this is the correct spelling, not the one made by the previous poster) is a good reference, and you can find this book here on amazon. I also agree with the previous poster who said that you should save your money and not purchase the Teaching Solutions CD. All in all, just study, make flash cards, use other resources, and you should be fine.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment and waste of money
This book was the biggest disappointment ever. Not only is the CSET a stupid test to begin with but this book does everything but give you an idea of what to expect on the test. I walked into the test confident and feeling very well prepared, when I left I knew I was doomed! Do everything you can to avoid buying this book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Read the Reviews
I've taken the test for the CSET multiple subject, and I can honestly say that the Cliff's book is really poorly edited and drafted for the CSET multiple subject. I'm not sure where the poster who was hyping about the book is coming from, but you really need to look into other resources to study from. The practice tests in the Cliff's is NOT representative of the actual test. The official CSET website is a good way to go. Keep your chin up, save your money, and do well on the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Helped Me Pass the CSET On My First Try
I just received my scores for the CSET exam, and I passed ALL THREE subtests on my first try, and all taken on the same day, thanks in large part to Cliff's CSET test prep book by Jerry Bobrow and Stephen Fisher.

There was a test prep workshop that I enrolled in that recommended the MSAT book by Research & Education Association. However, the CSET exam replaces the MSAT exam; the reason given for using the older MSAT book was because it contained more detail in the history and literature sections. To this day, I never opened the MSAT book; rather, I used the Cliff's CSET book extensively.

Here is how the Cliff's CSET book worked for me:

First, I studied the CSET Web site (URL: http://www.cset.nesinc.com/) to find out exactly what the exam was all about. There is a link that provides you with a comprehensive outline of the subject matter requirements that you are responsible for on the CSET. Print this out and study it! THEN, I started reviewing Cliff's CSET book and saw how closely it mirrored the official CSET Web site's content requirements that would be tested for on the exam. It was this organization, and additional detail not found on the CSET official Web site, that helped me tremendously in preparing for the exam.

Second, after reviewing each section in the Cliff's CSET book, I referred to a series of books that provided additional detail. I have read complaints about this book not having enough detail from other reviews of this book. I also read reviews that recommended supplementing this lack of detail with a series of books by Hirsch: "What Your 4th (or 5th or 6th) Grader Needs to Know." When I took a look at these books, I said to myself, they are good resources if you have the time to sift through them all by grade. But I am a busy mom raising gradeschool children, trying to maximize my time studying in order to work towards obtaining my teaching credential. I am also 40-something with a several-year period break in my career to raise kids, and I don't remember a thing about what I learned in gradeschool. I referred to a series of books that were a TREMENDOUS help to me, and moreso in a shorter period of time: the "Everything You Need to Know About (World History, American History, Science, English, Geography, and Math) Homework" series by Anne Zeman and Kate Kelly. I purchased all six (there are more, but I focused only on the key subject areas). You can either buy them new or used, or check your local library. If you are a visual learner like I am, these books are for you.

Third, having reviewed the CSET Web site, reviewing all sections of the Cliff's CSET test prep book, reviewing content areas in more detail using the homework series of books, I then took the entire Practice Test 1 in the Cliff's book. For those that I missed, I read the detailed analysis of what the correct answers were, and why. The Cliff's book does an EXCELLENT job of explaining the answers to each question. Once I reviewed my mistakes, and tallied my scores, which the book tells you how to do, I then took Practice Test 2. I also made sure that I answered all of the practice essay exam questions. Again, the book does an EXCELLENT job of describing to you how to approach answering the essay questions. When you review the breakdown of the entire CSET exam, you will see that the essay questions are worth a lot of your score. But if you practice the ones in the book, you will realize that you do not have to write perfectly written prose to answer the question correctly. You can make a list of your answers or draw diagrams with labels if you want to, so long as you get the main points identified.

Finally, I then had two days to go before exam time - all five hours of it on an early Saturday morning. There were no surprises. And I had 10 minutes to spare to double check my exam booklets that I had answered every question.

The Cliff's CSET book guided my overall test taking strategy: I focused more on those content areas that were worth the most points (e.g., history, science, math, and language arts comprising Subtests I and II) and less on those areas that were worth less points (e.g., human development and the arts in Subtest III). But I did not ignore any of these subject areas.

I also kept reminding myself that this is an exam of what I should know as a future teacher of gradeschool kids, and NOT as a single subject high school teacher or college professor (those require different exams [grin]). This is why I found the homework series of books I mentioned above helpful; they kept me focused on what my appropriate level of understanding should be. And it made my studying actually quite fun. Otherwise, it is very easy to get overwhlemed with too much information. I only needed to pass the exam, not get 100%. Perfection was not my goal here; a passing score that demonstrated my basic level of competency was; and I achieved that.

I believe that if you focus your study around this book, you can easily test for what you know, identify what you don't know, list and prioritize the additional resources you need to refer to to get the additional content detail you require. Further, if you continue to work through the book's practice tests, it is highly probable that you will be well prepared, and with minimal surprises, when you take the actual exam.

Thank you Cliff's, and thank you Jerry Bobrow and Stephen Fisher for a very effective study guide. This book definitely took the "anxiety" out of the test for me.

1-0 out of 5 stars not good
Read the previous reviews and did not use Cliffs Test Prep but instead used everything need to know 4, 5, 6th grades. I also went to the cset website and did the practice test over and over again. This was very helpful!!! I passed my tests on the first try. The test was very long and draining took all 5 hours for the three subtests. Good luck! ... Read more

In the certification craze of 1999-2001, tens of thousands of people earned their Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) ratings. Those certifications are expiring now, just as Microsoft is coming out with Windows Server 2003 to replace the Windows 2000 family of operating systems. There may be a real opportunity for those who earn the Windows Server 2003 certification--and that's where MCSE Self-Paced Training Kit: Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Core Requirements comes in. This four-book set (which comes with quiz software and a 180-day laboratory version of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, plus a coupon for 15 percent off the cost of each of the four exams), combined with some hands-on practical work, should be all you need to earn the new MCSE rating or the Microsoft Certified System Administrator (MCSA) certification.

Each of the four books (each with a separate author) covers the published requirements of a single exam. Coverage tends to be text-heavy--even procedures rely mostly on text and use few screen shots. This goes to reinforce the fact that these are serious books for people with a pretty good idea of what they're doing already. Chapters typically begin with conceptual coverage of their subjects (using diagrams to illustrate the relationships among network entities in many cases) and move on to illustrative procedures to try. Chapters then conclude with carefully considered discussion questions. The answers to the questions appear in an appendix, complete with explanations of why the correct answers are what they are. --David Wall

Topics covered: The published exam requirements for the MCSE/MCSA core exams: "Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows 2003 Server Environment" (70-290), "Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure" (70-294), "Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure" (70-291), and "Planning and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure" (70-293). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 1500 practice questions and 15% off exam fee discounts!
Just the sheer number of practice questions alone makes it worthwhile to buy this set from Microsoft but adding the 15% off exam fee discount voucher makes it really hard to resist buying this set. If you actually take all 4 exams and buy this set from Amazon, your cost is 60% off the list price! But after comparing the number of practice questions from other vendors, I found that it is definitely worth buying this set.

Even though these books are intended to train you in the Windows Server 2003 Operating System, I found that it is better to have either 'Windows Server 2003 Administrator's Companion' from Microsoft or 'Mastering Windows Server 2003' from Sybex as a reference guide and use this set mostly for review and exam preparation. After comparing the two reference books, I found the book from Sybex to be better as its coverage is more extensive than the book from Microsoft.

The four exams covered in this set are 'Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Environment', 'Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure', 'Planning and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure', and 'Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure'. They are exams 70-290, 70-291, 70-293, and 70-294 respectively.

The books are made of very thin paper and are all paperback editions. This makes it easy to carry the individual books around. This is especially important considering that there are 4000 pages in the whole set and imagine what the hardcover editions with heavy paper would feel like! There are 2 CDs that come with the set. One has a 180 day trial version of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition and the other has the 1500 practice exam questions and several good ebooks. All four books are in searchable and printable electronic formats that are supposed to be Pocket PC-ready. The extra ebooks are 'Microsoft Encyclopedia of Security', 'Microsoft Encyclopedia of Networking, Second Edition', and 'Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Sampler'. This last ebook contains excerpts from other Microsoft reference books. But the first two are worth quite a few dollars if you purchase them separately! There are several white papers and miscellaneous software on the second CD-ROM on top of what I already described above.

This training kit assumes that the readers have a minimum of 12 to 18 months of administering Windows technologies in a networked environment and an understanding of Active Directory. I am still looking for a good book on Active Directory Infrastructure.

Each book has its own unique and specific hardware requirements but to illustrate, they recommend that you have two computers to learn from the 70-290 book. One computer needs to have the server installed with a specific name (Server01) and the domain controller in a specific domain. This may make it difficult to use a work computer for training purposes unless your boss lets you have a dedicated computer or these requirements don't affect what's already on the server. The other computer should ideally have a Windows XP client for the optional hands-on exercises.

Each book follows a lesson style format with each chapter having several lessons. Every lesson has an estimated time at the beginning that may not be that accurate depending on your level of experience. Each lesson has several tasks with the concepts and the step by step instructions explained in a easy to understand manner.

Beginners may be able to do okay with the 70-290 book but intermediate to advanced users will definitely be more comfortable with the other three books. I am finding the 70-291 and 70-293 the hardest probably due to my background.

Overall, I think this set is definitely worth purchasing as I haven't run into any good competing books yet. But the price and the number of questions included make it extremely WORTHWHILE to purchase this set. Not to mention the additional free ebooks that you would have to pay for otherwise! If you are planning on taking the MCSA/MCSE exams, definitely get this set. If you are just trying to learn Windows Server 2003 from this set, I believe that there are better books out there. Good luck with your training and exams!

2-0 out of 5 stars Very briefly
They just can't call it self-preparement guides - maybe exam-review or something like that. I saw many self-prep guides, these are the worst. For example, 70-290 is ~350 pages long. Book is split onto two parts. Only half of the book has been dedicated to well structured but very brief concepts. Another half is just hardcopy of the same questions that included in the CD. This is what I cant understand. Seems like somebody was so lazy that day and just wanted to puff up the book's size, fill it with something. Although test quesions is ok and there are some nice case studies, the overall picture is poor.

The test if pretty hard and you'll never pass it only with this book - you'll have to buy something additional or spend time and tons of paper finding and printing appropriate topics from help and Technet - keep it in mind when buying these books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much improved--great buy!
Earlier editions of the Microsoft Training Kits were not particularly thorough, well written, or real world. The three volumes I've used in these new editions, though, 290, 291, 294, are 100% IMPROVED. First, they are EXCELLENT as learning tools (I really wonder why others believe that they're too brief. And they include real-world case studies that did not exist in the earlier editions. But the best part of this new series is the extras, especially the exam practice and test prep information, READINESS REVEIW. This gives you the value of a "study guide" plus an entire "exam cram" type book. With the 10% exam discount vouchers and the eval software, this is a great package!

2-0 out of 5 stars Software
The only good thing about Microsoft Press is the trial software provided. It gives you the opportunity to get some hands on practice on your home computer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much better than i thought
The usfulness of this libary has beaten my expectations. As i ordered this libary, i thought that this books is extremely technical and that the topics are discussed more difficult that they really are, so that i would be more confused instead of trained after reading. I thought first that i therfore would use it only as a reference instead of a training kit in the case that i can't find the answer to a technical question in other books.

After i read a few pages in these books, i was suprised of the high quality as a training book. The different, rather difficult topics are explained in a very easy, good understandable and easy to follow manner. The learning process is very well-balanced. After i've realized that, i had used this books as my primary training kit and successfully passed the exams mainly with the help of this books.

I can highly recommend this libary to anyone who is learning for the MCSE Server 2003. Of course, to sucessfully pass the exams, there is also the need for a lot of practical experience. You cannot just read the books and then think that you can pass the exams without problems if you do not have the appropriate experience.

For me, this libary was one of the key parts to successfully pass the exams. And if i can do it - you can do it too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent study tool
The book delivers what it promises: real SAT II tests that have been administered in recent years. Real SAT II: Subject Tests is great as a score predictor for the actual exams. The brief review for each subject included is trivial, so I would highly recommend using a study book specialized for the particular subject(s) you are taking in conjunction with this book. The price is a bit steep for only one test per subject, but I believe it is worth it, especially if you plan on taking multiple SAT IIs.

Note: A full SAT II Biology E/M exam is now included along with the book. It comes shrinkwrapped with the actual book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not enough number of examples
This book contains 22 past actual SAT II administrations in all of the 18 subjects. It is unequivocally a must source for those studying for the SAT II; very useful for timed, full-length mock tests to conduct on your own.

2-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't live up to 10 Real SATS
This book while providing one example of each SAT II subject test is not nearly as comprehensive nor as useful as 10 Real SATs. With so many tests in one edition, there is little information on each test. Also, with only one practice test per subject, after you familiarize yourself with the types of questions you're already out of practice material. I don't recommend buying it, but if you're going to take the regular SATs I definately reccommend 10 Real SATs for your review.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's exactly what they say it is
This book delivers what it promises -- real SAT IIs. It was helpful to take a real test to gauge how I would do on the real test. The questions were similar but there is so much material in each subject that some of the content was different. However on the bio, I found a few questions that were almost exactly the same.

The main problem I had with this book was that it only has 1 test for each subject. Since I only took 3 tests, most of the book was wasted. This book cannot be used alone to review. Its only purpose is to give you an idea of what the test is gonna be like.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this.
Since the 10 Real SAT I was really great, i decided this book must be the same, right? WRONG. It's nothing like the Real SAT I. It's poop, don't buy it. Yes, it has practice tests with real SAT 2 questions, but unlike its predecessor, there is only ONE test for EACH SUBJECT. The reason the book is so thick looking isn't because it has a whole bunch of honking information or tests, but because it literally covers EVERY STINKING SUBJECT offered by the SAT 2. For each subject, there is basic (and i mean BASIC) info like how long the test is, how many questions etc.. But there is almost NO information on the actual CONTENT of the tests. There's a couple of shoddy practice questions in the beginning of the section, and no detailed explanation of the answers. Then there is a total of...drum roll...ONE stinking practice test for your chosen subject. At the end, you don't even get half-assed answer explanations like before. In fact, you get NO explanations at all. They don't even really tell you how hard the questions are. In short, this book is really great if you are taking ALL 20+ SAT 2 SUBJECTS. If, like most people, you are not, then don't buy the book. Collegeboard is evil. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More than just a study guide.
The rise of Red Hat has been marvelous to watch. Starting with a 'free' operating system, they have produced an integrated software system that rivals the big kid on the block. With this kind of success, comes more success. Now you see job ads for people who know Red Hat. And with this comes certifications. How do you prove that you've even typed 'ls' into your system.

This book is at once a study guide and a detailed overview of the Enterprise version of Linux. Yes, it will tell you what is going to be on the test, and the title and cover copy emphasises this. But the book is more than that, it also explains the why and wherefores of the operating system. It has real world exercises and instructions that cover what the serious user needs to know. The book could easily have been rewritten slightly and called something like "Everything you Need to know." It is not a beginners book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great place to learn about the RHCE!
I've toyed for years with taking the RHCE, but one problem I've had is that most of the study materials (and classes) I've researched seem to have traded in clarify for complexity. Fortunately Jang's book doesn't fall into that category, and it's a very good balance of technical depth and clear, logical explanations that I think will help you grok the RHCE exam and pass it.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Book to have for RHCE exam preparation
The Red Hat Certified Engineer is one of the most respected of the Linux certifications. Part of the reason is because of the difficulty of the exam. "Red Hat Certified Engineer Linux Study Guide, 4th Edition" covers all the points of the exam very well and includes the information you need to work with Red Hat in the real world. In addition to all the information you need to pass the exam, the book contains over 50 lab exercises and two complete RHCE exams and the entire book on CD. If you plan on taking the exam do the labs, don't just read over them.

Michael Jang has consistently produced high quality books and this is one of his best. The book is strongly slanted toward passing the exam, which is okay since that is exactly what it purports to be. Throughout the book there are short comments marked off from the rest of the test which points to tips for real world items (called "on the job") and tips for the exam (called "exam watch"). Each chapter ends with a short summary, a "two-minute drill", self-test questions, and lab questions. The "two-minute drill" is great for exam preparation the day of the exam since it is pretty much the type of thing that you would put on note cards for a quick review anyway.

This is real-life advice and is full or tips and troubleshooting problems. In the installation section it covers disk partitioning, swap space, bios limits, multiple controllers, and RAID. Some good solid advice and information about things like problems with a computer with both a SCSI drive controller and IDE drive controller in the same system. The installation troubleshooting section includes boot loaders, RAID, logical volumes, kickstart automated installation and pretty much everything you might run across. It even includes how to boot up into single user mode, a very important ability for some administrative tasks and gaining root level access (full access to everything) to the system. For some reason, although this is used in real-life for a lot of reasons, it seems to be left out of most books. They will tell you to switch to single user mode to fix a problem or gain root access, but don't tell you how to do it. This book tells you everything you need to know. It includes not only the graphical and utility methods to do things but also includes the information for how it changes the configuration. The information is so detailed that you can hand add the lines and/or configuration files and do it all by hand if you would prefer. This way you understand exactly what each item does and it is much easier to troubleshoot problems.

The authors have included everything you need to know to install, troubleshoot, and administer a real-world server - shell configuration, kernel information, automation, X Windows installation and configuration, GNOME and KDE desktops, Apache server including security and virtual hosts, Squid proxy server configuration, secure FTP server, mail services including SMTP, sendmail, postfix, POP, and IMAP, Samba installation and configuration, printing services, DNS, BIND, DHCP, LDAP client configuration, firewall policies, network address translation, and the Linux rescue environment are examples of the breadth of coverage.

It even includes how to work with the automounter, another item that is left out of most other books. The only error I found was on page 11, Table 1-2, where it has "First IDE drive = /dev/had" when it should be "/dev/hda". For that to be the only problem I found in a book of this size shows the care with which it was edited.

This is simply the best book I have seen if you want to become a general Linux "guru". Not only does it have everything you need to pass the exam, it has everything you need to install and administer a Linux network. There are better books available on specific areas of Linux, for example a single chapter on Apache obviously cannot compete with a 600 page book on Apache server. Then again, this the best book around if you want an understanding of Linux that is general enough to provide a complete overview of how Linux works in the real world and is also detailed enough to provide everything you need to get everything you want up and running. "Red Hat Certified Engineer Linux Study Guide, 4th Edition" gets the highest recommendation I can give.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Guide
This is one of the best study guides I've read. Some people expect that a book should take you from novice to master simply by reading it. The truth is you only get out of it the effort you put into it. Some of the examples in the book were remedial for me, others not so much. I think this book provides good information for those that will take the time to use it and learn from it. I will be taking my RHCE exam in a few months, and look forward to passing it. This book is a good resource for anyone serious about taking the RHCE exam. ... Read more
