would find countless more mistakes than I did. Generally I would recommend this book only to people, who are VERY advanced in their studies for the Step 1, so that they can be sure to filter out these substantial mistakes and do not attempt to memorize wrong stuff. But then again : why would you buy a review book, if you knew already everything so perfectly that you could immediately recognize these mistakes ? Ömer Gök ... Read more

The audio CDs are individually stored in plastic slide-in sleeves, which are packed in a durable plastic binder-type case. The discs are well-labeled with the chapter number and title. The track listing on the CDs don't match with the chapter numbers, which can be confusing; for example, chapter 1 is covered on tracks 4, 5 and 6 of disc 1. The insert, however, has a complete listing of the chapters and track numbers to facilitate programming. The insert also contains two indexes which are extrememly helpful. The first lists the exact location you can find the chapters about individuals (example: the lesson on Alexander the Great is on CD 4, tracks 8-10.) The second index is a quick reference of stories (example: the story of Romulus and Remus is found on CD 4, track 14.) The audiobooks feature an engaging and energizing musical score as a break between chapters. Listening to the narrator is like having a professional storyteller in your home. The narrator speaks with a natural, even tone. The audiobook version of SOTW is pleasant enough for daily use and is interesting enough not to drive you crazy on a long drive. ... Read more

Book Description Reviews (21)
Although I passed with the first try, about 75% of the questions were very difficult (for me). After reading remarks posted on the Internet from other test-takers, I figured that I needed to review this book a few more times. It turned out to be a valuable resource, but should be supplemented with additional reading materials and practice exams. I agree with a previous review that the book should have included the chapter questions on a CD based practice exam.

I just picked up these books, and was truely impressed. Not only do they provide me with the background, as well as the hands on needed, they come with some excellent tools on the CD includeing an invaluable network simulator and an evaluation version of the Windows 2003 OS. What I truley like about these titles is that they don't leave you hanging. Far too often, a book does not go as in depth as necessary. Not these book. Each topic is reinforced with hands on exercises, so you can practice what you learn. A tremendous resource for anybody, beginner to experience, if you ask me. ... Read more

Book Description Why CliffsTestPrep Guides? Go with the name you know and trust About the contents: Introduction Part I Analysis of Exam Areas Part II Review of Exam Areas Part III Two Full-Length Practice Examinations with Answers and Explanations Test Prep Essentials from the Experts at CliffsNotes Reviews (19)
As with the majority of the posters here, I agree that the content of the Cliff's Notes fell short of meeting the contents for subtest I, II, and III. The material presented in the Cliff's Notes, is either based on a loosely outline format, or will contain sporadic information that is basically a rehash of the contents of its previous edition (MSAT). If you really need to study for these tests, you CAN include the Cliff's Notes, but only use it as a last minute review. The sample tests in the Cliffs Notes are just exercises, and do not reflect the real CSET multiple subject test in question format or content. Hirsch's book (and yes, this is the correct spelling, not the one made by the previous poster) is a good reference, and you can find this book here on amazon. I also agree with the previous poster who said that you should save your money and not purchase the Teaching Solutions CD. All in all, just study, make flash cards, use other resources, and you should be fine.
There was a test prep workshop that I enrolled in that recommended the MSAT book by Research & Education Association. However, the CSET exam replaces the MSAT exam; the reason given for using the older MSAT book was because it contained more detail in the history and literature sections. To this day, I never opened the MSAT book; rather, I used the Cliff's CSET book extensively. Here is how the Cliff's CSET book worked for me: First, I studied the CSET Web site (URL: http://www.cset.nesinc.com/) to find out exactly what the exam was all about. There is a link that provides you with a comprehensive outline of the subject matter requirements that you are responsible for on the CSET. Print this out and study it! THEN, I started reviewing Cliff's CSET book and saw how closely it mirrored the official CSET Web site's content requirements that would be tested for on the exam. It was this organization, and additional detail not found on the CSET official Web site, that helped me tremendously in preparing for the exam. Second, after reviewing each section in the Cliff's CSET book, I referred to a series of books that provided additional detail. I have read complaints about this book not having enough detail from other reviews of this book. I also read reviews that recommended supplementing this lack of detail with a series of books by Hirsch: "What Your 4th (or 5th or 6th) Grader Needs to Know." When I took a look at these books, I said to myself, they are good resources if you have the time to sift through them all by grade. But I am a busy mom raising gradeschool children, trying to maximize my time studying in order to work towards obtaining my teaching credential. I am also 40-something with a several-year period break in my career to raise kids, and I don't remember a thing about what I learned in gradeschool. I referred to a series of books that were a TREMENDOUS help to me, and moreso in a shorter period of time: the "Everything You Need to Know About (World History, American History, Science, English, Geography, and Math) Homework" series by Anne Zeman and Kate Kelly. I purchased all six (there are more, but I focused only on the key subject areas). You can either buy them new or used, or check your local library. If you are a visual learner like I am, these books are for you. Third, having reviewed the CSET Web site, reviewing all sections of the Cliff's CSET test prep book, reviewing content areas in more detail using the homework series of books, I then took the entire Practice Test 1 in the Cliff's book. For those that I missed, I read the detailed analysis of what the correct answers were, and why. The Cliff's book does an EXCELLENT job of explaining the answers to each question. Once I reviewed my mistakes, and tallied my scores, which the book tells you how to do, I then took Practice Test 2. I also made sure that I answered all of the practice essay exam questions. Again, the book does an EXCELLENT job of describing to you how to approach answering the essay questions. When you review the breakdown of the entire CSET exam, you will see that the essay questions are worth a lot of your score. But if you practice the ones in the book, you will realize that you do not have to write perfectly written prose to answer the question correctly. You can make a list of your answers or draw diagrams with labels if you want to, so long as you get the main points identified. Finally, I then had two days to go before exam time - all five hours of it on an early Saturday morning. There were no surprises. And I had 10 minutes to spare to double check my exam booklets that I had answered every question. The Cliff's CSET book guided my overall test taking strategy: I focused more on those content areas that were worth the most points (e.g., history, science, math, and language arts comprising Subtests I and II) and less on those areas that were worth less points (e.g., human development and the arts in Subtest III). But I did not ignore any of these subject areas. I also kept reminding myself that this is an exam of what I should know as a future teacher of gradeschool kids, and NOT as a single subject high school teacher or college professor (those require different exams [grin]). This is why I found the homework series of books I mentioned above helpful; they kept me focused on what my appropriate level of understanding should be. And it made my studying actually quite fun. Otherwise, it is very easy to get overwhlemed with too much information. I only needed to pass the exam, not get 100%. Perfection was not my goal here; a passing score that demonstrated my basic level of competency was; and I achieved that. I believe that if you focus your study around this book, you can easily test for what you know, identify what you don't know, list and prioritize the additional resources you need to refer to to get the additional content detail you require. Further, if you continue to work through the book's practice tests, it is highly probable that you will be well prepared, and with minimal surprises, when you take the actual exam. Thank you Cliff's, and thank you Jerry Bobrow and Stephen Fisher for a very effective study guide. This book definitely took the "anxiety" out of the test for me.

Amazon.com Each of the four books (each with a separate author) covers the published requirements of a single exam. Coverage tends to be text-heavy--even procedures rely mostly on text and use few screen shots. This goes to reinforce the fact that these are serious books for people with a pretty good idea of what they're doing already. Chapters typically begin with conceptual coverage of their subjects (using diagrams to illustrate the relationships among network entities in many cases) and move on to illustrative procedures to try. Chapters then conclude with carefully considered discussion questions. The answers to the questions appear in an appendix, complete with explanations of why the correct answers are what they are. --David Wall Topics covered: The published exam requirements for the MCSE/MCSA core exams: "Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows 2003 Server Environment" (70-290), "Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure" (70-294), "Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure" (70-291), and "Planning and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure" (70-293). Reviews (12)
Even though these books are intended to train you in the Windows Server 2003 Operating System, I found that it is better to have either 'Windows Server 2003 Administrator's Companion' from Microsoft or 'Mastering Windows Server 2003' from Sybex as a reference guide and use this set mostly for review and exam preparation. After comparing the two reference books, I found the book from Sybex to be better as its coverage is more extensive than the book from Microsoft. The four exams covered in this set are 'Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Environment', 'Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure', 'Planning and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure', and 'Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure'. They are exams 70-290, 70-291, 70-293, and 70-294 respectively. The books are made of very thin paper and are all paperback editions. This makes it easy to carry the individual books around. This is especially important considering that there are 4000 pages in the whole set and imagine what the hardcover editions with heavy paper would feel like! There are 2 CDs that come with the set. One has a 180 day trial version of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition and the other has the 1500 practice exam questions and several good ebooks. All four books are in searchable and printable electronic formats that are supposed to be Pocket PC-ready. The extra ebooks are 'Microsoft Encyclopedia of Security', 'Microsoft Encyclopedia of Networking, Second Edition', and 'Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Sampler'. This last ebook contains excerpts from other Microsoft reference books. But the first two are worth quite a few dollars if you purchase them separately! There are several white papers and miscellaneous software on the second CD-ROM on top of what I already described above. This training kit assumes that the readers have a minimum of 12 to 18 months of administering Windows technologies in a networked environment and an understanding of Active Directory. I am still looking for a good book on Active Directory Infrastructure. Each book has its own unique and specific hardware requirements but to illustrate, they recommend that you have two computers to learn from the 70-290 book. One computer needs to have the server installed with a specific name (Server01) and the domain controller in a specific domain. This may make it difficult to use a work computer for training purposes unless your boss lets you have a dedicated computer or these requirements don't affect what's already on the server. The other computer should ideally have a Windows XP client for the optional hands-on exercises. Each book follows a lesson style format with each chapter having several lessons. Every lesson has an estimated time at the beginning that may not be that accurate depending on your level of experience. Each lesson has several tasks with the concepts and the step by step instructions explained in a easy to understand manner. Beginners may be able to do okay with the 70-290 book but intermediate to advanced users will definitely be more comfortable with the other three books. I am finding the 70-291 and 70-293 the hardest probably due to my background. Overall, I think this set is definitely worth purchasing as I haven't run into any good competing books yet. But the price and the number of questions included make it extremely WORTHWHILE to purchase this set. Not to mention the additional free ebooks that you would have to pay for otherwise! If you are planning on taking the MCSA/MCSE exams, definitely get this set. If you are just trying to learn Windows Server 2003 from this set, I believe that there are better books out there. Good luck with your training and exams!
The test if pretty hard and you'll never pass it only with this book - you'll have to buy something additional or spend time and tons of paper finding and printing appropriate topics from help and Technet - keep it in mind when buying these books.
After i read a few pages in these books, i was suprised of the high quality as a training book. The different, rather difficult topics are explained in a very easy, good understandable and easy to follow manner. The learning process is very well-balanced. After i've realized that, i had used this books as my primary training kit and successfully passed the exams mainly with the help of this books. I can highly recommend this libary to anyone who is learning for the MCSE Server 2003. Of course, to sucessfully pass the exams, there is also the need for a lot of practical experience. You cannot just read the books and then think that you can pass the exams without problems if you do not have the appropriate experience. For me, this libary was one of the key parts to successfully pass the exams. And if i can do it - you can do it too. ... Read more

The main problem I had with this book was that it only has 1 test for each subject. Since I only took 3 tests, most of the book was wasted. This book cannot be used alone to review. Its only purpose is to give you an idea of what the test is gonna be like.

Book Description Reviews (4)
This book is at once a study guide and a detailed overview of the Enterprise version of Linux. Yes, it will tell you what is going to be on the test, and the title and cover copy emphasises this. But the book is more than that, it also explains the why and wherefores of the operating system. It has real world exercises and instructions that cover what the serious user needs to know. The book could easily have been rewritten slightly and called something like "Everything you Need to know." It is not a beginners book.
Michael Jang has consistently produced high quality books and this is one of his best. The book is strongly slanted toward passing the exam, which is okay since that is exactly what it purports to be. Throughout the book there are short comments marked off from the rest of the test which points to tips for real world items (called "on the job") and tips for the exam (called "exam watch"). Each chapter ends with a short summary, a "two-minute drill", self-test questions, and lab questions. The "two-minute drill" is great for exam preparation the day of the exam since it is pretty much the type of thing that you would put on note cards for a quick review anyway. This is real-life advice and is full or tips and troubleshooting problems. In the installation section it covers disk partitioning, swap space, bios limits, multiple controllers, and RAID. Some good solid advice and information about things like problems with a computer with both a SCSI drive controller and IDE drive controller in the same system. The installation troubleshooting section includes boot loaders, RAID, logical volumes, kickstart automated installation and pretty much everything you might run across. It even includes how to boot up into single user mode, a very important ability for some administrative tasks and gaining root level access (full access to everything) to the system. For some reason, although this is used in real-life for a lot of reasons, it seems to be left out of most books. They will tell you to switch to single user mode to fix a problem or gain root access, but don't tell you how to do it. This book tells you everything you need to know. It includes not only the graphical and utility methods to do things but also includes the information for how it changes the configuration. The information is so detailed that you can hand add the lines and/or configuration files and do it all by hand if you would prefer. This way you understand exactly what each item does and it is much easier to troubleshoot problems. The authors have included everything you need to know to install, troubleshoot, and administer a real-world server - shell configuration, kernel information, automation, X Windows installation and configuration, GNOME and KDE desktops, Apache server including security and virtual hosts, Squid proxy server configuration, secure FTP server, mail services including SMTP, sendmail, postfix, POP, and IMAP, Samba installation and configuration, printing services, DNS, BIND, DHCP, LDAP client configuration, firewall policies, network address translation, and the Linux rescue environment are examples of the breadth of coverage. It even includes how to work with the automounter, another item that is left out of most other books. The only error I found was on page 11, Table 1-2, where it has "First IDE drive = /dev/had" when it should be "/dev/hda". For that to be the only problem I found in a book of this size shows the care with which it was edited. This is simply the best book I have seen if you want to become a general Linux "guru". Not only does it have everything you need to pass the exam, it has everything you need to install and administer a Linux network. There are better books available on specific areas of Linux, for example a single chapter on Apache obviously cannot compete with a 600 page book on Apache server. Then again, this the best book around if you want an understanding of Linux that is general enough to provide a complete overview of how Linux works in the real world and is also detailed enough to provide everything you need to get everything you want up and running. "Red Hat Certified Engineer Linux Study Guide, 4th Edition" gets the highest recommendation I can give.
