3-0 out of 5 stars Don't forget the Tapes !!!
This book is well laid out and easy to follow. However, I made a big mistake and ordered the version without the Audio Tapes. If you are beginning to learn Polish DONT FORGET THE TAPES!! Without the tapes, it's easy to become intimidated by the pronunciation, and then become disheartned, like I did..... :(

4-0 out of 5 stars Recommended if You're Not Easily Overwhelmed
Teach Yourself has been revising its language books lately, and the improvements have been remarkable. You are now given practical vocabulary and dialogues with which to learn the language, and the series is especially good for tourists or business persons intending to visit the countries where the language is spoken.

Truth be told, however, Polish can be intimidating at first with its unique orthography and pronunciation. The first unit of Teach Yourself Polish will definitely be a challenge unless you've had some Polish before. But, if you're patient, what seems insurmountable at first will eventually become second nature.

The grammar notes are excellent, introducing points in a logical and consistent fashion. Certain points are introduced early and developed more thoroughly later. However, it is sometimes difficult to locate a point that was covered early in the text without thumbing page-by-page through the book since it contains NO index. If you order this book, you should try to obtain the version containing cassettes. Though they are fairly Spartan (presenting, as it were, only half the dialogues covered in the text), they are helpful for pronunciation and intonation.

By the way, this book contains twenty units, not eighteen, as the editorial review indicates.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
This book is probly the worst Polish book in existance. It includes very little grammer and has a very confusing format. It's simply bad, bad, bad, bad. Dont make the same mistake I did. DONT BUY THIS BOOK.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average book
this was the first book for polish that i purchased but not the last. i got by with the book for a period of time and found it to be a quality book but nothing special. i guess what sort of slowed my progress is the fact that from day one they just threw you into the conversations. while some people might actually like this, it was a pain for me to have to be checking the word/expression list over and over for every single expression. i have found other books to be more helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy-to-read modern book on Polish for beginners
This book is clearly written, and easy to understand. Instead of overwhelming you with huge amounts of grammar to MEMORIZE, it takes a more conversational approach, and explains cases and conjugations as they come up. The chapters are short enough and varying. If you haven't already noticed, there are few decent books on Polish. This is a beginner course, but I am pleased with it so far. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent place to start
I purchased this comprehensive Pimsleur after having little to no success with Teach yourself Polish book and CD and Colloquial Polish book, cd and cassettes.I found that the later two, while inexpensive, were too difficult for an absolute beginner, such as myself, with no idea of Polish pronunciation or how to read and say the written words.

The Pimsleur, while very expensive, will definately have you speaking and understanding the language. Each lesson consists of thirty minutes of audio to listen and repeat.By the end of the series of 30 lessons, I am able to communicate simple needs in Polish, such as where to find places, simple directions, paying for items; and to engage in simple conversations such as how many children do you have, where do you live, where do you work, what to eat, drink, etc.I'm also able to to communicate what time it is, and how to communicate when I don't understand what someone is saying in Polish.

The main thing missing from the Pimsleur program, in my opinion, is the lack of written materials. There is a small book included with the alphabet and pronunciation guide, but that is not enough to make the leap to actually reading or even recognizing the written form of the words you are speaking in Polish. The other drawback is that once you finish the Comprehensive Polish, there is no next level to go on to with Pimsleur.I am left at this place where I can converse somewhat, but I cannot read or write any Polish.

Overall, I would rate Pimsleur Comprehensive Polish I as excellent for developing basic pronunciation and conversation skills.Currently I'm searching for the next step.If anyone else out there knows any useful programs to follow Pimsleur maybe they can post them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Consider something else
I purchased this program and found it to be annoying in it's redundancy. The Pimsleur method may work for some, but it didn't work very well for me. Your mileage may vary.

The more expensive Pimsleur versions contain readings which enhance the experience, but not much. For similar money consider Eurotalk's Talk Now! Polish which is a computer application using picture, written word, and spoken word association. I found it to be superior to Pimsleur and Rosetta Stone in every regard. See my review of that title. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars yes, sounds familiar.....
This is a good slang-type of dictionary. The phrases or words are colorful because ordinary terms are used in a vulgar meaning. Hence, most of the entries are translated into the English 'F-word.' But are funny if you think about the literal meaning of the words. It makes American vulgar-slang look so boring and limited to a few words. I don't know why the other reviewer thought there should be religious references because the book seems to be thorough (I'm not sure that any cultures have religious obscenities for that matter).

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, accurate, and nasty
This book is full of deliciously vulgar phrases. I wouldn't recommend actually using them unless you want a black eye, but as far as I can tell, having spent a summer in Poland, they're mostly accurate and up to date. The author also provides many literal translations, which are usually the funniest phrases in the book.

I was surprised to find that the book has almost no religious profanity. This seems strange, given that Poland is about 95% Catholic, and the author doesn't indicate if it's an omission or if there simply aren't any such curses. I also would have liked a scale of some sort to indicate which phrases were obscene and which were merely naughty. Still, it's a fun book, and if you've ever been ripped off by a Warsaw cab driver it's a useful one too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!
THIS IS A WONDERFUL BOOK FOR HELP ON CONJUGATION OF POLISH VERBS. EVRYTHING YOU COULD WANT TO KNOW IS IN THIS BOOK. THE SEMI-LARGE PRINT IS ALSO A VERY NICE FEATURE. IT IS EASY TO READ AND THERE IS NO CONFUSION BETWEEN LETTERS THAT CAN LOOK ALIKE. 301 POLISH VERBS IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough
Dating a Polish guy with a family who doesn't speak english very well is frustrating. Entire hours can be spent without hearing your own language except in short translations. I found this book to be very helpful in my language expanding efforts. One thing especially helped: the short Polish to English aproximations of vowel and letter grouping sounds in the beginning of the book. However, it is neccesary to know someone Polish or have a tape of native speakers in order to get a couple of these down accurately. We just don't have these sounds in English. I couldn't find this in many beginning Polish books and used it often as a reference when I first started. It's a great addition to a beginning speaker's library for building vocab.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relieves Conjugation Stress
After searching high and low for a book that could facilitate the sometimes arduous task of conjugating Polish verbs, I think the search is over. 301 Polish Verbs, by Klara Janecki, offers a logical and clear approach to learning the Polish verb. Simply by turning the first few pages you get the immediate immpression that this is a quality book. Written with wonderful attention to detail, and with explanations that are presented in clear effective English, success with the Polish verb is not too far around the corner. In addition, the contextualized examples give you a reasonable insight into how the verb can become an active part of your Polish vocabulary. For anyone who wants to increase the speed and effectiveness of their learning, this is a book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good reference
this is obviously not a book to be used on it's own. but accompanied by a quality instructional text, this book is great. for example, once in a while you'll encounter a word in an instructional book that doesn't look like the infinitive to any verb. this book will help you to figure those words out. in addition, it allows you to compare various verbs by presenting a verb and all of the ones that are similar. if you spend time learning maybe 5 verbs a day, you'll see that your vocabulary and knowledge of polish increasing tremendously.

5-0 out of 5 stars 301 Polish Verbs
The 301 Polish Verbs is a great advancement over the 201 Polish Verbs. In addition to getting an extra 100 verbs, all the verbs are fully conjugated, in all tenses, and the introduction is much more informative and easier to understand. Each verb now has at least one example sentence to help ensure proper usage. In addition, this book contains 42 sample tests with answer keys. The verb index in the back of the text is easier to read; however, it still lacks an alphabetical listing of perfective verbs. So if you don't know the imperfective verb a lot of time can still be spent searching for it. This is a great reference and I highly recommend it for all levels. I can't wait for 501 Polish Verbs? ... Read more

"You must understand that I did not become a resistance fighter, a smuggler of Jews, a defier of the SS and the Nazis all at once. One's first steps are always small:I had begun by hiding food under a fence."

Through this intimate and compelling memoir, we are witness to the growth of a hero. Irene Gut was just a girl when the war began:seventeen, a Polish patriot, a student nurse, a good Catholic girl.As the war progressed, the soldiers of two countries stripped her of all she loved—her family, her home, her innocence—but the degradations only strengthened her will.

She began to fight back.Irene was forced to work for the German army, but her blond hair, her blue eyes, and her youth bought her the relatively safe job of waitress in an officer's dining room. She would use this Aryan mask as both a shield and a sword:She picked up snatches of conversation along with the Nazis' dirty dishes and passed the information to Jews in the ghetto. She raided the German Warenhaus for food and blankets. She smuggled people fron the work camp into the forest. And, when she was made the housekeeper of a Nazi major, she successfully hid twelve Jews in the basement of his home until the Germans' defeat.

This young woman was determined to deliver her friends from evil.It was as simple and as impossible as that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truth is beauty
I have read many books about the Second World War, and the Holocaust. This is one of the best. For those who ever read Diary of A Young Girl by Anne Frank, and wondered what life might be like for a Gentile girl at the same time, this book answers that question.Irene Gut's strong faith, and loving family led her to make the right, if very difficult, choices. The contributions by Jennifer Armstrong are seamless, the true voice of Irene never falters.I have only a few slight quibbles. I wish that there had been more followup on Irene's post-war life, and on the post-war lives of those she saved.Irene Gut Opdyke's faith is as clearly presented as the late Corrie Ten Boom's (The Hiding Place), however, I found In My Hands to be a much more gratifying book.I deeply hope that this book becomes part of the standard curriculum in schools worldwide. However, adults who have any interest in the Second World War and the Holocaust will find this to be a well-written, encouraging book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A True "Profile of Courage"
I am so grateful for having read this book. It was deeply moving. I am a seventeen year old girl, as Irene was when the war began, and I cannot even imagine having to experience all of things she did....being raped, a mistress, etc. I admire this woman so much, her courage and determination are one in a billion. It's incomprehensible to know what she went through during those dreadful years, yet through it all her faith is what helped her to survive. I will never forget this book for as long as live...I've read so many books, and I have to admit that I think this one has truly moved me the most. I've read many Holocaust stories as well, but this had a profound effect on me. Please read this book--you'll gain not only a better insight of World War II and the Holocaust, but also how to appreciate life more and realize how much you take for granted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I just finished listening to this book on tape. It was extremely well done from Irene's recollection of events. The Holocaust was an atrocity to society, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't study the topic. Hitler and his regime need to be understood to prevent similar occurences in the future. I can't image what she was going through during those times and I wonder how many of us could even begin to imagine her anguish.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING READ!
This book was awesome! I've read it numerous times and each time it gets me hooked. The plot is heartwrenching and the bravery Irene shows is inspiring. Anyone interested in reading about WWII/Holocaust should read this book! You won't be disappointed!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Irene Guts Memories of the Holocaust
I enjoyed this book very much. It gave me a better understanding of what the Holocaust was really all about. I couldn't believe some of the scenes that she described about what was happeing to the Jews. The courage of what Irene did to protect people that she didnt even know amazed me. She never gave up on herself and believed that one person could make a difference. I was touched by the way Germans could treat such innocent people and was amazed at the scenes that she described in the book. Irene knew what she was doing was right and the more she saw such behavior the more determined she became to fight. One of the things I did not like about this book was that they focused more on what was happening to her and the people she was protecting then all the Jews in general and what was really happening in the concentration camps. Also it was hard trying to follow up on what was happing in the war. I got confused on when they were being helped out by other forces or when Germany was in complete power. I also would have liked to hear more about Hitler and the evil that he aroused. Over all I believed this was a very good book to others interested in the Holocaust. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Frustrating to use if one is looking for words in Polish. Words found in the English-Polish section are not always contained in the Polish-English section, and some of the more common roots or infinitives simply aren't there. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good starting point
I bought this book a few days ago knowing zero Polish. I like this book as it does a great job with phonetical spelling, making it very easy to figure out how to pronounce the words. It's also a good pocket size that you can take with you anywhere if you have a few extra moments to practice on the bus or eating a burrito or something. My goal with this book is to get something that was useful and just allow me to just get an initial foothold in the language that I'll supplement with a more in-depth course. In that regard, it's been great. I already have the basic phrases down. Plus, it's cheap!

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the Stupid Tourist
I brought this book to Poland with me, and it proved invaluable to someone like me who only spoke "stupid tourist" Polish. I went to the country knowing virtually nothing about the language, and the book proved invaluable in making simple, stilted communication. Without the book I would have been completely lost. The phonetic pronunciation proves invaluable for a language like Polish where the words don't sound like they look (to a stupid tourist like me).

My one complaint was the occasional presentation of very important words with supplemental information about why the word is important, but without any phonetic pronunciation. The words are essentially useless if you don't know how to say them, and in Polish, that's pretty much all the time. Other than these occasional oversights, the book does a pretty good job of guiding you through the language for basic survival. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A confusing way to learn a language
This book is ok if you're a tourist wanting to learn some quick phrases or if you have a prior knowledge of the polish language, but if you actually want to learn and understand the language then this book is not for you. It starts off with a dialogue, but they don't tell you the meaning of any of the words. It tells you a phrase and has it's english equivalent, it may be used the same way but if you look up the words in a dictionary, not a single word is the same as in the english equivalent. I like to be told what it really means. Plus the layout of the book is confusing and takes some getting used to. Overall this book was not worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars totally awesome
I've been learning Polish for almost two years, but most of the courses I've gone through have been keeping the vocabulary and grammar below the intermediate level and not going beyond that point. Of all the courses I've gotten so far, this is the absolute best. It keeps the language at a level of simplicity that almost everybody who uses it will be able to understand. If you have a sufficient knowledge of how Polish pronunciation works, you might be able to use just the book only. If you don't know the sounds of Polish or are unsure about certain sounds, I'd recommend getting the cassettes that accompany the textbook. (I already had some cassettes for Polish when I bought this course, and I also have a Polish friend who helps me with speaking the language, so I didn't buy the cassettes and can't tell you about their content.) The pronunciation, though at times difficult to enunciate clearly and often frustrating to those who aren't used to the frequent combinations of consonants, is mercifully straightforward and has few exceptions. Once you know how Polish pronunciation works, you can read Polish right off a page. The books details the common exceptions (very few words are read differently than they're spelt orthographically. One tense has a switch of stress, from the penultimate to the antepenultimate), and the grammar is explained clearly. It speaks from a "native-English" point of view so that all native speakers of English can relate the information through the idioms and logic they naturally use. Overall, this is the best book you can buy for learning how to both write and speak Polish. Speaking what you read or hear is the absolute best way to keep your knowledge fresh in your memory. Langenscheidt offers an awesome dictionary which can be used to further your Polish after completing the course. With this dictionary and the course, you should be able to converse with Poles is a short time. ... Read more
