2-0 out of 5 stars GO WITH BARRONS PCAT REVIEW
Go with Barrons books... they're much more cost effective, and not to mention more helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars It brought me success...
I just got my score from the PCAT I took in March 2004 and I scored in the 99th percentile. This was the only book that I used to review. I studied it cover-to-cover and took the pre-test seriously. I've been out of school for a bit and hadn't seen chemistry like that in 5 years. Biology on the test was easier than the content in the book. Same with math, but speed is the key to doing well in that section.
    Good Luck!

4-0 out of 5 stars By far, the best prep. book in the market...believe me
I took the March 27th, 04 PCAT, and I prepared for it by literally getting my hands on every PCAT prep. book the university book store had in stock. Lemme tell ya, by FAR, this book best represents the material you'll encounter on the test. Firstly, verbal section: waaaaaay more difficult that the actual words and analogies you'll have to understand, so don't panic if you don't understand what "dawdry" means. Next, bio: this book provides the BEST bio12 coverage compared to other review books that only give you a rough guide (outline) of what to expect (don't spend so much time on taxonomy). Reading Comp: expect these kinds of questions on the exam instead of the elementary level questions you find in Barron's or PCATSuccess. Quantitative: Most representative - content and difficulty wise (UNDERSTAND YOUR FRACTIONS MAN!!!!) (not so much on the trig tho). Lastly, Chem: actually, I think you're better off to go with Barron's actual practice exam for this one since the material in the Kaplan is a little higher (but hey, better it being harder than easier right?) The study content in the Kaplan Chem is pretty inclusive of all the material you'll need to know. Well, that's it. Hope this helps and wish ME luck when I get my results back. Later

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Study Guide
I thought this book was great. If you know the content and the concepts covered in this book you will do well on the test. The chemistry, biology, verbal, and reading comprehension sections in the Kaplan book are a little harder that the actual test which I thought was helpful to be fully prepared. The math section is pretty accurate to the actual test. I just took the March PCAT and every question on the test was covered in this book. Anyone who says this book isn't helpful probably just wasn't prepared enough! Yes, this book is similar to Kaplan's MCAT book, however the PCAT and the MCAT have similar content in some sections. I used a lot of my old MCAT study materials to prepare for the PCAT. I don't know why other reviewers see this as a problem. The only complaint I have is that there were some typos in the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars An Exact Copy of DAT
This book is a word by word copy of DAT. It's sily to say this book is designed for PCAT. The Verbal part is also a copy from other Kaplan books, not directly related to PCAT. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Organized
French grammar is hard to learn because although there are rules there are more exceptions than rules. This book does a great job of organizing things in a way to deal with all the expections. I especially like the way it presents the verbs. I own quite a few books on French grammar but the way this book groups the verbs is really much better. In terms of reviewing for a test (or for real life if you live in France) a book like this is essential, since most normal French text book are just too disorganized to find what you are looking for. Also it helps me to see all the rules about a certain topic in one place at one time. There are lots of exercises and the answers are in the back of the book to check yourself. Learning French grammar isn't ever going to be easy, but if you use this book it will be a lot easier than if you don't. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have French learning companion
I don't have to describe the content in detail as the self-explanatory nature of the title. I studied French in L'Alliance Francais for some time. Their communicative approach almost makes me paralysed until I have this book. I can't imagine how a middle age person can learn a new language by merely listening and imitating the sound of teachers. On the contrary the grammatical approach in this book systematically illustrate every single bit of grammar detail for beginner (and intermediate level student). By reading and reviewing the explanation as well as practising the exercise, I can make a lot sense in French now. And I am not just fantizing it. The most exciting piece of news is that my progress is noticed by both my French teacher and my classmates. The mastering of basic is so satisfying and giving me advancement and enjoyment.

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring - A story of French Grammar

    Monotonous black on newsprint white,
When I open it, it gives me a fright

No-one knows how to pronounce its name,
The book is so boring and oh so plain

French grammar could be much more fun,
    Number of interesting exercises: none

    The word 'boring' doesn't apply,
    The exercises make me cry

I never need to count sheep,
Open Schaum's and I'm already asleep

You'd think by the fourth edition they would've got it,
I can't believe stores actually stock it

The places to write answers are tiny,
    Truth be I try,
But if the next edition isn't better,
Out the window it will fly

    The publisher is a crook,
The only thing less interesting is a phone book

A novel gets better with time,
For Schaum's I would not pay a dime

If you see this book run!
    Toothache is more fun

And as for Mary E. Coffman Crocker,
People who use her book mock her

This book is a real flop,
    Use it as a doorstop.

    David Carr, July 2002.

P.S. This book is useful, but not interesting. If that's what you're looking for, buy it! But if you value things in life other than French grammar, perhaps look for another title.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good supplemental material for beginners
This outline helped me studying for exams for college French I and II classes. My textbook was not organized well and it took me a long time to find informations I needed. This outline is so well organized that I could find the info quickly. The textbook did not provide any answers to the excercises, but the outline has the answers for all of its excercise problems so I worked on the excercise problems of the outline instead of the ones on the textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars For anyone interested in the French language
This book is great in that it can be used by a beginner or someone who is familiar with French but wants to improve their French grammar. Organized in coherent sections, you can easily find your area of concern, such as the imparfait tense, articles, etc. There are also exercises you can do, and (the major advantage) there are also answers in the back. Definitely worth your money! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Seems to be a good book, but more is needed
I am about to take the test and have not taken a prep course. I have outlined this book and it is an easy read. However, if you go to and take a look at the sample questions they provide, the test questions in this book do not seem like the real deal. This concerned me so I bought the Exam Cram2 book which is an easier read (but not as detailed as this book is) and it provides another set of questions which has seemed to help. Now, after reading both of the books PMBOK was an easy read which has made me comfortable enough to schedule the test. I have read the book a few times and suggest continual drilling on the review tests provided on the CD that accompanies this book. So, I think the compilation of this book and at least one other will be sufficient to pass.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't use it alone, but a GREAT reference!
First off, don't think you can get away with passing the PMP exam by just reading this review book. I acquired this book the weekend before I took the PMP exam at a local chapter's all-day exam review session and threw myself into it. The book is a very easy read and my favorite element was the "case study" that you followed throughout the entire project life cycle so you could see what you've learned "put to work."

I passed the PMP exam two days ago with 165/200 and this book definitely helped. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Used This Book To Pass The CFP Exam
I found this book to be an accurate and concise review of the 101 topics covered on the CFP cerfifcation exam. This book was written in a great "review notes" format, much like I would take notes on a complex subject. I would highly recommend this book as a great CFP certification exam review. It is filled with only what you need to know- no extraneous commentary.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful book
This book is an incredibly detailed outline covering the vast selection of topics included on the CFP exam. Because of the outline format, I wouldn't recommend trying to use this book as a way to learn material for the first time. What it is ideal for is as a reminder of details and distinctions, improving your recall of topics learned in some prior class or self-study, but in much more detail. Because this book is updated each year, it references up-to-date tax dollar amounts you'll need for the exam. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Passed the exam with this book
I used this book and some separate practice questions to study for the exam, and I passed on my first try. The practice questions i bought were ok, but they didn't really explain any of the topics very well. This book covers all of the exam objectives very thoroughly, with lots of theory AND practical information. It also includes what they call "real world scenarios" that do a good job of adding some context to the rest of the information in the chapters. The extra CD content could have been better, but I bought the book for the book, not the CD. The chapters are clearly laid out, explaining the exam objective coverage at the beginning of each one. This book has everything you need to pass the exam and actually learn the material. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone studying for the exam. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Biology Reference!
This is a fantastic reference for everyone interested in biology from laymen to graduate students.

Despite being mercifully thin and portable (as compared to those massive textbooks), this book manages to cover all of the key topics in biology ranging from biochemistry and molecular biology to ecology. Moreover, the treatment is sometimes surprisingly sophisticated; this is indeed a real science book, not pop science.

At the same time, the writing style is very simple and clear, and therefore easy to understand, yet also concise, so you don't have to waste your time reading a lot of fluff. The format of the book is also pedagogically very effective because it mixes standard narrative text with solved example problems, questions which are posed and then answered in essay format, and problems for the reader to solve.

Finally, the price of the book is so ridiculously low that you might even feel a little guilty that you are getting so much while paying so little!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the student!
I am a biology student that is going to take my master's entrance exam in biology. I am using this book to help me review some of the important topics. This book is great. Not only does it offer good information, but also it has sample problems and answers to help quiz yourself. If you want to know everything about biology, get this book. It is also great as a handy reference guide.

I am a chemistry/pre-medical student at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University; therefore, biology is a very integral part of my curriculum. I didn't have a strong biology foundation before my matriculation to college. However, at the suggestion of my academic advisor, I purchased this book. Thus far, it has been on target with my biology textbook. It's almost as if the authors of my text collaborated with the authors of this installment of the Schaum's Outline Series. Without this book, I would be lost. It is a must-buy for any and all college students aspiring to pass biology with a healthy understanding of the course. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for anyone taking a tough Algebra course!
I took Algebra over the summer and before taking the class I read this book. It helped me alot. This book gets down to the facts and helps you understand them with practice and examples. For me this book was better than a teacher teaching me Algebra. It was great and helped me alot. I think this should be a required material for all algebra classes; it is better than any textbook. I am taking Geometry next year and I am soon to order Geometry Success in 20 Minutes a Day!

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost 5 stars
This is indeed a good algebra primer, though not without its failings. First the positive. The authors avoid the use of math jargon and long winded explanations that many other academic types use primarily for self-aggrandizement purposes. There are plenty of practice problems, and the lessons are laid out in a logical order. Now the negative. Some of the more difficult concepts are given little attention, while the very simple are given far too much attention. Also, the book should have been edited more closely (there are several typos and at least one repeated paragraph, but these errors are, for the most part, easily recognizable). I have found that books written by teachers are quite often rubberstamped by the people checking for accuracy, but this book avoids one of the worst failings of teacher/authors--the apparent practice of an author simply handing class notes to a publisher, believing their work is infallible. The authors of this book obviously put much thought into this work, and have succeeded admirably. Oh, by the way, "...In 20 Minutes A Day" means absolutely nothing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I am planning to go to College as a mature student in Spring and really and truly needed to fully understand Algebra. Well this book is perfect. Step by Step. If you don't understand Algebra after studying this book, you really weren't paying attention.

That and it's actually enjoyable. I also bought learn Geometry in 20 minutes a day. And I also feel the same way about that book.

This book along with practical algebra have helped me become a great math student.

5-0 out of 5 stars written from a students perspective
stumbled on this book in a book store after searching for a book for my brother. he just cannot understand the concept well enough because the text he uses in school is written in a fashion that assumes you know some stuff i think a good book is written when an author explains to you like a "dummy" that helps alot i know that because i'm a math tutor. i have spent 6 hours reviewing the style of this book and it really impresses me of how simple and understanding can an author make algebra. I dont quiet remember if there were any big emphasis on exponentials which i think are important, but if i over look this i stand correction. Any way great book it has taught me alot of easier way to do problems. its also great for those who have taken algebra years ago and need a brush up. GO GET IT I'M SERIOUS ... Read more

This book is awesome. It contains a ton of word problems, perfect for AP Test Prep and HW!

1-0 out of 5 stars a little light
This book is probably good for high school physics. I am in a physics for non-majors course in college and I found the material in the book to be not in-depth enough. To be honest I found it relatively useless to consult when I had a tough question and needed some help. There are better books out there. I just ordered 3 books that were recommended to me: "The Physics Problem Solver" by James Ogden, "How To Solve Physics Problems and Make The Grade" by Robert M. Oman and Daniel M. Oman and "3,000 Solved Problems in Physics" by Alvin Halpern.

Don't bother with this book if you feel lost in physics because it won't really help you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Your entire college textbook in outline form
I found this book to be a great review for my college physics class. Rather than a large chapter of dry reading, this book keeps everything simple, and to the point. Rather than a large discussion of Newton's Laws, they are simply listed for your reference.

The topics covered in the book are much too numerous to list out. I compared this with my physics textbook for science and engineering students. If you are having trouble understanding your textbook, use this text as a supplement. It does walk through problems and has problems you can try.

Regarding the practice problems, the answers are there, but they are right there. I would prefer to have the answers on another page, but this is still a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Explanation and lots of practice problems
I am currently taking the first year of the Physics Avanced Placement class at my high school and this was one of the books that we needed for the class. Our teacher said that it was very good because of the problems and he is exactly right.

There are 46 chapters in the book covering many topics, starting from a beginner's standpoint. I must admit that the explanation in the beginning of each chapter is a little dry but it is concise and to the point. The most useful part of this book or guide is the many problems it has for each chapter. After the explanation part of the chapter, the chapter then goes on to show you problems and the solutions to them. It shows you how to solve them, each step of the way. After these problems, it then gives you many, many practice problems that you can do yourself, it also gives you the answers so that you can check to see if you were right in your calculations. There are so many problems for you to do that it is great practice and after all of them, you feel as if you have truly mastered the concept because the problems build off one another, starting with the easiest then getting progressively harder at the end.

I think this is a great book and a great supplement to a Physics course. However, there is one drawback in that this is not really a textbook, it does have some explanation at the beginning of the chapter which is good but it is not like your usual textbook which has more in-depth explanation. But, if you are using this book as a supplement or in connection with another book, then this is all you have to ask for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple explanation, good practice problems.
Useful book with clear, simple explanations of subject material. Physics is all about solving problems so the illustrated and clearly solved problems increasing in difficulty were indispensable. (I wish I had used it more to study...) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple & Straightforward
Probability is a hard subject to understand for many and I am no exception. There is no one book that can present the subject matter in clear and precise way. This Schaum's outline as the title suggests is a good outline. It sums up the various topics and like other Schaum's texts solves a huge number of relevent problems. But it cannot be used as a substitute for a text. I cannot suggest any one text (Papoulis, Garcia, Gharamani etc.)either because I haven't found a satisfactory one so far. I have taken probability at different levels of education and the one thing that I have come to realize is that an understanding of the subject only develops over time. There is no magic solution except that you have be it for a while until your mind begins to think along the same lines. But I'd definitely suggest this book as a supplement to any text. In fact, call it a mandatory supplement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
Why can't textbooks be like this? I want to learn and actually do the problems. Textbooks seem to have obscure problems that have little explanation. This book has real problems professors assign, and this book demonstrates how to solve these problems! I want to do well in my classes, and this book helps me do just that.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very clear and compact
I had to use a book written by the professor teaching me probability. His book being very poor quality I decided to try this one instead. With success, it is a very clear and compact book. The only thing I found is that it does not cover enough distributions, and that there are quite a few typos.

5-0 out of 5 stars better than books many times its price
I purchased around $200 worth of textbooks on Probability and Random Processes for a graduate level course I took. Of those books, this one got the most use. It summed up topics concisely and provided adequate examples with enough detail to actually show me how to get an answer. If you are getting regular textbooks on this topic, it would be well worth your while to pay the extra small price for this handy guide. It will be well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Increasing the probability of solving probability problems
After being out of school for ten years, this book proved to be essential for my M.S.E.E. course in Random Signals. This book concisely summed my undergraduate engineering Signals class with solved problems. In addition, the solved problems acted as a guideline for my Master's class. I felt that I could not have gotten through my class without this book.

The reason why I ordered this book in the first place was the advice of my professor. My professor is a Ph.D. in the telecommunications workplace, acting as an adjunct professor. This working Ph.D. continues to use his well-worn Schaum's as a reference. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study aid for Grad/Undergrad course
The book is LOADED with examples, and has an excellent index. It supplies the examples that many texts leave out to make way for the theory. I bet that you will find more than one answer to a homework problem in this volume if you are taking either Grad or Undergrad Linear Algebra. It really helps you to find detailed information and solve specific problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive overview of linear algebra
This book is an incredible value! It covers all major topics in the field of linear algebra, in fact, many more topics than some more expensive texts. This book has many theorems with proofs as well as example problems and applications. My only complaints about this book are that the coverage of theory is a bit terse, and the proofs to many of the theorems are found in the exercises section at the end of the chapter, rather than immediately after the theorem. The terseness means that, without prior exposure to linear algebra, it would be a bit difficult to teach yourself strictly from this book. But with a little bit of background, this book should be no trouble at all. A "real" textbook would get a lower rating for these types of complaints, but since this book costs less than $13, there is no reason not to get it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice book for theory review
I would say that the structure of this book pleased me. I used it as a theory review for my qualifying exam in Linear Algebra. For that purpose it served quite well. It has a nice, constructive structure. It will make your knowledge organized and will not overload you with too much abstractions. Especially I enjoyed the fact that definitions and key theorems are situated separately from their proofs, that allow you to familiarize yourself with theory in general and after you know everything there, you may concentrate on the proofs to make your knowledge more sophisticated. At least this is the way how I did work with this book. As for exercises, they are not very difficult, I would say undergraduate level only, so that it is good for those who has a weak knowledge in this subject. For those who want to go beyond Linear Algebra I would suggest Kostrykin, 3 volumes, but it is in Russian ;-)

3-0 out of 5 stars easy to learn with this book, but too many mistakes
i'm currently taking linear algebra from one of the authors of this book. the first day of class the instructor passed out a corrections sheet for the book. even with the corrections sheet, i found many wrong answers in the answer sections.

    the pros
    - low cost compared to a normal textbook
    - easy to understand explanations
    - concise
    - lots of problems

    the cons
    - many, many wrong answers in the answer key means that you'll spend a lot of time checking your math with a calculator.

2-0 out of 5 stars ERRORS
After reading the first chapter I found 6 errors within the first 14 pages. These are simple equation errors. For example, page 6, the distance equation has a1-b1 and it should be an-bn. These Phd's should have had a student(may be several) review their work for the simple errors. ... Read more

    Book Description

The words people use say a lot about them. Some words say that they are smart, persuasive, and informed. Others say that they don't know what they're talking about. Knowing which words to use and how to use them are keys to getting the most from one's mind and to communicating effectively.

To find out which words readers absolutely need to know, The Princeton Review researched the vocabularies of educated adults. The Princeton Review analyzed newspapers from The New York Times to The Wall Street Journal, magazines from Time to Scientific American, and books from current bestsellers to classics.Editors threw out words that most people know and focused on the words that people misunderstand or misuse.

TPR also combed through the SAT and other standardized tests to determine which words are tested most frequently. In this updated third edition, editors give readers the most important words they need to know to score higher.

    Includes special lists covering:

    • Common usage errors
    • Most frequently tested words on standardized tests

4-0 out of 5 stars A good source of must-know words
As always Word Smart is a great way to study for the SAT, GRE, and standardized tests. These 800+ words not only help you do good on standardized tests but also enrich your vocabulary for everyday conversations. I especially found the pronunciation keys for every word very useful. It doesn't really make you look very smart if you mispronounce a word does it? I found it really funny that books never gave you pronunciations and was so pleased when I finally saw them in Word Smart. The sentence examples are also a great way to learn how to use these words and Adam's humor definitely shows up in some of them:) The word root list and GRE hit parade were also very helpful.

I recently got a score of 700 on my verbal section of the SATs. A large part of the reason was Word Smart. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was because I feel that you need to also purchase Word Smart II to get all the words that you absolutely need to know for the SATs. There are also some words in this book that are way too easy. Come on, ironic? Who doesn't know what that means. Otherwise this book is a must-buy for anyone taking the SATs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for SAT, GRE or TOEFL Preparation
This book contains 800+ words, which may not seem like a high number, but, those words will very likely appear on the GRE, SAT or TOEFL. Why? Because the testmakers test words that are commonly misused. For example, many people do not know the distinction between 'libel' (false written statements) and 'slander' (false spoken statements). Without knowing the subtle distinctions of words, you'll lose points on standardized tests which test vocabulary. Word Smart points out the commonly misused words and how those words are misused. Word Smart also provides interesting sample sentences to help you understand the context in which a word should be used, unlike the boring, somewhat useless sample sentences often found in dictionaries.

If you purchase this book, do all the matching quizzes which will greatly assist your vocab memorization.

4-0 out of 5 stars I prefer IPA symbols.
One thing I personally don't like about this book is that they use their own pronunciation keys instead of IPA symbols.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective
Very good book for International students preparing for TOEFL/GMAT/GRE
I used when I was taking my GMAT. I knew about 25% of the words that it had such as prolific or excentric but there were some good ones that I still remember such as vociferous and verdant. I found it very helpful to use during short periods of time when I would have a few minutes between meetings or in the public transportation on the way home. Generally, a very pleasant book. It has good white paper and each words has a full page. Remebering was easy too, but forgetting was not hard. Sometimes I caught myself that I would remember the picture but would not remember the definition. In any case, this is a much faster way to learn words than mere memorizing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage.
I used this book in preparation for the upgrade exam (since I already have my Win2K cert.) I've used a lot of Sybex books, and now rely on them pretty-much for all of my studying. This one provided solid coverage in direct, straightforward style. I don't like books that beat around the bush, and so this one met my needs well in terms of updating my knowledge of Windows 2000 Server to Server 2003.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great study guide for the exam
I used this book in conjunction with some practice exams that I bought separately and passed the exam on my first try without any problems. This book is great for learning about a lot of the theory and hands-on type of stuff you need to know for the exam, but it is not an exam simulator. That's what practice tests are for. The previous reviewer must not have understood this. I thought this book did a great job of addressing the exam objectives. Like with the other Sybex books, it follows a standard formula with lots of explanations, screenshots, and exercises that are mapped to the exam objectives on the Microsoft web site. I'd recommend this book to anyone looking to pass this exam.

2-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Book - Lacking content, very monotone, worthless CD
I took the 70-291 test twice and failed both times (I was 7-points shy from the pass mark the 2nd time). Although I heard the passing rate for 70-291 is somewhat low, I can't help but putting the blame on this book. The other 3 (2 core, 1 elective) Windows 2003 exams were a breeze and on all occasions I studied using Sybex books (I highly reccomend the Sybex 70-290 book), but this book is a different story.

The content in the book is good... if you want to know a lot of theory. However, the actual exam places more emphasis on practical knowledge, and some topics on the test were not covered in the book. Also, the practice tests that come on the CD are absolutely worthless. It tests mainly theoretical knowledge. Chapter tests are also lacking - some of the questions are downright dumb and the answers are very brief and cryptic.

The structure of the chapters are also confusing; it jumps around a lot (be prepared to see "later in the chapter" a whole lot and it gets annoying after the 1,000th time).

I would have liked to see more real-world examples incorporated into the text, and not just maybe 2 or 3 "real world scenarios" that don't actually relate to the technical stuff covered in the chapter. The 70-290 Sybex book (written by a different author) is completely opposite: the real-world scenarios incorporate the meat of the chapter into itself.

I just placed an order for the 70-291 book offered by Shinder and I'm hoping that will have better content than this book. ... Read more

    Book Description

For years, college students in pre-med courses, or majoring in biology, chemical engineering, and many other science courses have searched for a study aid of this kind, but have come up empty-handed. Now, Barron's has precisely what they've been seeking! OrgoCards is a set of more than 160 5 1/2" x 7" cards that summarize reactions and reaction mechanisms in organic chemistry. A sophisticated variation on the time-proven "flashcard" method of study, the cards summarize organic reactions in 21 functional groups, such as alcohols and alkenes. Card number-one in each group outlines the group's physical and chemical properties. Each subsequent card explains a specific reaction, starting with a diagram of the reaction, and followed by a Keys section that summarizes the most important data related to this reaction. Following the list of Keys is a Notes section giving miscellaneous information. The back of each card contains a detailed reaction Mechanism, in both text and diagram forms. OrgoCards emphasize repetition and serve as aids to memorization to prepare students for examinations. These flashcard-style summaries highlight organic chemistry data that is vital for success on tests, fostering the student's comprehension in ways that standard textbooks cannot do. Organic chemistry is a required course in most college-level science programs, and knowledge of the subject is a requirement for success in admissions tests for medical, dental, and veterinary schools everywhere. Here is the learning tool that successful students will be turning to! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Overall, there is no need to purchase this card set
The main problem with OrgoCards is that it is not really a set of two sided flash cards. It is simply a shortened text book in card form. The cards are not 3 X 5 index cards and they contain a lot of information on them, much of which is not really necessary. You are better off making your own flashcards.

1-0 out of 5 stars not very helpful
I purchased these cards hoping to improve my understanding and also to use them for reviewing before tests in my organic chem 2 class. The cards were not useful for either task. If you don't already understand the material from class the cards won't help clarify material. In addition, many of the reactions were not even covered by my instructor, particularly in the aldehyde/ketone section of the cards. This could confuse the heck out of someone. These cards might help you review but won't help you learn or understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars A GOOD ALTERNATIVE TO CLASS-NOTES
The portable cards which constitute this 'book' are well-designed. They will assist any student who is taking undergraduate organic chemistry course prepare for revisions. Although that they lacked details in some respects, their coverage did embrace wide areas.
They are particularly useful in learning about the various nomenclature, as well as the physical and chemical properties of a functional group in a given homologous series.
"OrgoCards" impressed me with the way it handled those nucleophilic substitution reactions that members of Carbonyl group undergo. Despite its haphazard lessons on Acylation, its efforts on Alcohols, Aldehydes, Ketones, Esters, and Carboxylic acids are quite commendable.
This "OrgoCards: Organic Chemistry Review" should be seen either as a textbook complement, or a notebook alternative. I will suggest that you consider buying it if your lecturer is the type that is not enthusiastic about giving class-notes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!
These Orgocards were extremely useful not only while studying for my organic chemistry course but especially for the MCAT.

I tried making my own flashcards but I found them immediately obsolete after I got Orgocards which contain the critical information in a very understandable and easy to read format. They were also really a critical part of my studying for the bio section of the MCAT since a lot of the detailed info from o-chem had become a bit fuzzy by that point.

    A definite must buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, It is GREAT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Breathes life and energy into a potentially dry subject.
This book starts teaching before chapter one even gets under way by setting the expectation that you really can learn (and better, apply) finance no matter what you're trying to do.

The sample situation that follows all the way through the book really helps focus on the concepts being taught. Some of the examples are humorous and some make you want to share what you're reading with a loved one.

I bought this book because I'm just starting to deal with the budget aspects of network management, and needed to figure out how to lay out what I want to do technically to non-technical folks who have the company checkbook. I already know what I want to do, how much it will cost - demonstrating benefits and describing it in language the "C" team - CEO, CFO - speaks really helps.

One of the best discoveries for me while reading this book is that in addition to helping me achieve the goal above, I found the concepts are applicable to budgeting for the home as well.

    It's definitely worth a read!

4-0 out of 5 stars Finance made easy
I'd definately recommend this book to anyone who feels phased by finance. Either as a refresher course to revamp finance skills long gone or for newcomers to the subject. The material is very relevant and extremely readable which makes an otherwise droll subject quite lively and interesting. I would have given this book 5 stars but being the pedantic reader that I am, I discovered that some of the calculations were actually inaccurate and, even worse, the answers to the review questions were wrong too. This doesn't help when you're not a natural number cruncher and need solid accuracy to assist in the learning process. Needless to say, its still a fundamentally good book and I know I'll be referring to it over again to make sure the basic concepts stick.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'd give it six stars if I could! Fun To Read
OK. You're reading about this book because some brilliant mind at your company decided you should head up the financial decision-making department of your company. Never mind that you majored in Italian and never studied finance! Or, you are new to business and want to start your own company, and you know you need to know a bit about bookkeeping and financial management. Congratulations! You've found the right book.

"The McGraw-Hill 36-Hour Course In Finance For Nonfinancial Managers" is a great little book. Every small business owner who hasn't formally studied finance should read it.

Robert A. Cooke covers it all-- sales, cost of sales, expenses, buying, leasing or doing without, the balance sheet and income statement, and much more. This is not a bookkeeping text per se. "The McGraw-Hill 36-Hour Course In Finance For Nonfinancial Managers" teaches finance which is a broader topic. A strategic topic needed for successful growth of a company.

Unlike many introductory small business books, "The McGraw-Hill 36-Hour Course In Finance For Nonfinancial Managers" does a really good job discussing budgeting and long-range planning. Using the numbers to plan rather than just recording them for the sake of tax-reporting purposes is what finance and financial decision-making is all about.

Further, Cooke makes financial business planning, which is considered by many to be a boring topic, rather fun to read. He follows the new fictional start-up company, The Spouse House Company. The company makes little sheds, Spouse Houses, for spouses who are in the dog house and who need a little shed in the backyard to hang out in until trouble blows over and domestic tranquility is restored.

The book ends with a short self-test you can take to see if you have retained the information covered in the book. But, hey, this is real life and not school. You don't have to take the short little test if you don't want to. Nor do you have to work out the short review questions. But, I'd recommend you do.

"The McGraw-Hill 36-Hour Course In Finance For Nonfinancial Managers" is not only very readable, but reads quickly at only about 270 pages. That means you will be able to read it twice.

In addition to "The McGraw-Hill 36-Hour Course In Finance For Nonfinancial Managers," if you are starting your own business, you should also pick up a copy of "Small Time Operator," which covers taxation dates and issues, and a copy of my own "Thinking Like An Entrepreneur." These three books will give you a strong tripod base upon which to build your small business and entrepreneurial finance knowledge.

Peter Hupalo, Author of "Thinking Like An Entrepreneur."

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent use of Humor to teach Finance
Robert Cooke use humor throughout the book to help nonfinancial manager understand financial reports. The use of the Spouse House Firm throughout the book allows you to see the develop of financial reports as they apply to a small growing firm. Robert writes as he is right in front of you talking to someone he has known for a long time. He uses humor to help you understand the difficult concepts of the book. If you are looking to learn financial statements or just refresh your skills this is the book I recommend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love O. Chem... what's wrong with you?!
I have found the Schaum's Review series very helpful both in review and in independent study, especially for Organic Chemistry. Many times, chemistry students fail to learn key concepts not because they are incomprehensible (thankfully) but rather because they were either explained badly or simply explained in a way that does not make sense to a student. This book explains all the key concepts and includes almost 2000 problems to make sure you understand O. Chem. clearly even if you're so sick of it you're comtemplating shoving an Erlenmyer full of benzene down your professor's Organic throat. Buy it, and save your sanity. ... Read more

    4-0 out of 5 stars A good self-study course, if you're interested
I am the reader from Montezuma, NM, and after taking a few more chemistry courses and re-reading the outline, I feel that I should add a few observations to my enthusiastic review from above, which I wrote over 3 years ago.

I own many, many Schaum's Outlines, and am satisfied with all of them. However, before you buy this outline of college chemistry or any of the other Schaum's Outlines, you need to ask yourself what your needs are. If you are looking for a brief review of a subject, you should look elsewhere. If you are taking a course in general chemistry and need a little help with some areas of it, you should look elsewhere--preferably, ask someone with a thorough grasp of the subject to explain those areas to you.

The Schaum's Outlines are best used as a self-study tool. Let's face it, reviewing an entire subject and solving all the problems to gain a solid grasp on the material is difficult and time-consuming, and I suspect few students already enrolled in a course will have the extra time to rehash what they've already been told by reading through a Schaum's Outline, and even fewer will want to go through so many problems--at least in my courses, the problems we are provided are too much to begin with.

For review purposes, Schaum's may help some students, especially if you are reviewing years of material such as I did for my IB exam. However, since you need to know what your course will test you on specifically, you would need to go through the outline along with your notes. Therefore, spending more time reviewing your course notes might be a better use of your time.

Schaum's Outlines are essentially cheaply made textbooks, and, as with other texts, the writing varies widely from one book in the series to another. If a cheap self-study course is what you seek, or you'd like to preview a course you plan to take, by all means go with Schaum's. If you are a student looking for help with a subject, seek it elsewhere.

For help with grades, I suggest you try the Scham's "How to Study" guide and follow their suggestions.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Study Aid
This book is concise and complete. The reviews are great, and the problems aren't just busywork--they actually will help you understand the material. For the higher level International Baccalaureate chemistry exam, I have had to review 2 years worth of general chemistry, and this book has helped me immensely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can be used as a informative supplement to class room text.
I am a chemistry major and found a lot of informative material included. The book explained the ideas thoroughly and the problems at the end of each section were a good source of review and practice. Everything was straight forward and easy to comprehend. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good concept, but missed the target.
Grammar is boring, frustrating, and complex. At least, that's the impression I got from taking it in school. This book attempts to take a fun (well, not-so-boring) approach to explain it all... And for the most part it does well. It's concise, and the examples are good. Where things fall apart is when the book refers to parts of grammar that haven't been explained yet. For example, starting with Quick Quiz #8 (page 25), the reader is asked to identify prepositional phrases, but phrases and clauses aren't covered until page 59. Naturally, you'll miss a lot of the questions. The answers to the quizzes seldom have explanations. If an answer seems to contradict a grammar rule or just not make sense, you're left hanging. Discouraging? You bet. If you were confused by grammar in school, this book may help -- but don't expect it to answer all your questions or eliminate frustration with the topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT
This is book is great. It is well organized, complete, and simply written. The exercises provide great practice. It also highlights common grammatical mistakes that always show up on examinations. You can read this book in one day and understand what you've read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple Grammar Instruction
A very good no-frills book that is an instant cure for all sorts of grammar problems. Don't expect the flashy, "cute" approach that many modern grammar books have adopted, but rather just sit back and enjoy a straightforward no-nonsense approach to grammar that is understandable to even the most hardened grammarphobe. A great read for those interested in grammar or those wishing to polish up their everyday speech and writing. ... Read more
