2-0 out of 5 stars Full of errors!
This book is full of errors and does not reflect the changes in the new exam. I teach GED students, and I am extremely disappointed with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelente textbook for the Hispanics GED Students
The importance of this textbook, GED en Español 2004, by Gines Serran-Pagan et al, (Arco, 2004), is basically the dedication of its authors to create a material addressed to the Hispanic population in the United States. Other textbooks on Ged in Spanish published by Barron's and MacGrow Hill are mere translations from Ged English textbooks which were written and conceived for the Angloamerican student without any consideration to the Hispanics.

The Arco's GED en Español 2004 is the pioneer material, the first ever published on this area of adult education. The authors have created the infrastructure of the GED material in Spanish and they made history creating this textbook. Their merit radicates in their devotion to help the Hispanic adult student in the United States, reinforcing the Hispanic culture and history, and at the same time serving as a guide to help teachers and students to cover all the areas of the new 2004 GED test. More than one million Hispanics have used this textbook in the United States. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars More Social Support Than Information
If you are the kind of parent who believes your children can be wonderful hood ornaments on the vehicle of your personal success, this is the book for you.

The author abhors public schools because, as he says, they have to accept EVERYBODY (ugh!). He favors and supports boarding school education for children as young as first grade (only about five years old) so that they can live in a warm, morally consistent (but unloving) environment all year long, and because he feels that the child and his parents will then share only happy memories of carefree summers and holidays, with none of that messy and mutually irritating go-clean-up-your-room-and-do-your-homework fuss and muss.

In other words, he seems to believe that children are better raised by goal-oriented institutions, who see their students as a product being readied for the marketplace, than by their parents rearing their own offspring as a gesture of love and tenderness.

As a teacher, and as aparent of private-school kids, I found the author's attitude completely offensive, and I have to say that this is the kind of material that gives private-school families a bad name. I would have given it a "1" rating -- especially because the author supports his point of view with speciously derived and manipulated statistics -- but undoubtedly there are parents who do subscribe to his point of view, and will benefit from this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Biased, but somewhat helpful
Despite a virulent anti-public school bias, Unger's guide to picking a private school has some helpful information and tips on choosing a private school. Frankly, however, anyone who needs this type of hand-holding to get through the private school application process, is probably not private school material. Unger's best tip is to buy the Peterson's guide to secondary schools.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything A Parent or Student Would Want To Know...
The perfect mannual for any parent considering sending their child to a private school. The book will be especially useful to families with older children who are considering going to baording school. The book covers issues concerning the application process, questions parents should ask, visting the school, and different types of schools including military school, schools for the gifted, and schools for the learning disabled. There's also a short listing of schools in the back listed by state grade, whether or not their coeducational, boarding schools, schools for the disabled, military schools, etc. However, you'll need a private school directory such as Peterson's in order to find out any info. about the schools. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Other books are better!
While it is true that this book does contain some sample questions, so do other books available on Amazon. Several other books are much, much better than this one. The sample computer test information is free at collegeboard.com. If you are well versed in your area of study, then this book may help with sample questions.

However, if you need to study and can not afford to waste money with every clep book, that this is the wrong book for you.

If you have limited funds, and want a better study guide, purchase "Cracking the Clep" Princeton Review. You get alot more information for your money.

Other books that are better than this one are the Comex books and the study books from REA.

All of these books are available on Amazon, and will do you better than this book. If you can afford to buy every book, and need a comfort zone, than by all means, get this one too.

Just don't expect any of the questions in this book to actually be on the test. They won't. You need to either know or learn the concepts that the questions represent.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless CD - Why Did They Bother?
While this book does a good job of covering the questions and subject matter of the 34 CLEP examinations, the fact that the administration of the exam is now computer-based creates a desire for practice experience that simulates the actual test environment. Students who select this book expecting that the accompanying CD-ROM will include such simulated practice exams will be in for a major disappointment, however, because the CD contains little more than a canned orientation to the computer interface. The publishers don't help much by adding a somewhat vague description of the CD's content in the text; and on the actual CD there are menus that go through subject areas and subject exam titles, but they all lead to the same generic tutorial that has nothing to do with the subject content!! It's like you're being conned. For the 2004 edition, the College Board should make a simple choice: omit the CD (and drop the price of the book) or put real practice exams on it.

3-0 out of 5 stars CLEP 2003
I found this CLEP guide to be somewhat helpful. One good point is that it prepared me for the actual test format. The CD is not very useful - it basically just shows you how to navigate the computer-based CLEP exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars CD was a disappointment
While the tests appear to be comprehensive in the book, the CD was a total disappointment. There are no sample questions on the CD at all, only a tutorial for taking a multiple choice test on the computer.

Another disappointment was the lack of relation between the results on the practice tests and what is necessary to pass the tests. While the book has shown me a couple of areas I need to study, I don't feel it is preparing me to take the tests.

Wish me luck!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful for the CLEP Subject Exams
If you are going to take any of the CLEP subject exams, and especially the CLEP exam Info Systems and Computer Applications, then you might want to consider getting this book. While it does cover the CLEP general exams, there are several very good guides out there that would probably be better. However, there are no decent guides for the Info Systems exam and just a few for the other various subject exams.

Having taken the CLEP Info Systems exam and using this book as my only source of study questions, I can attest that the sample test in the book is very close to what you can expect on the exam. Incidentally, I passed.

I have taken other CLEP subject exams and while there are some very good study guides out there, this book should also be used as a source of sample test questions as they all seem to be very close to the actual exam.

Overall, this book gives an accurate representation on what you can expect if you are going to take any of the CLEP exams. ... Read more

Book Description

Twenty-five years before the Manhattan Project created the town of Los Alamos, the Pajarito Plateau was home to an elite prep school for boys, ages twelve to eighteen. The Los Alamos Ranch School combined a robust outdoor life and a carefully cultivated wilderness experience with a rigorous academic program and the structured discipline of a Boy Scout troop, perfectly mirroring the Progressive Era's quest for perfection.

John Wirth's father, Cecil, taught at the school and directed its summer camp. John spent his early childhood at the school along with his brother Tim, later a U.S. Senator from Colorado. Drawing on oral accounts, memoirs, and archival documents, as well as John's firsthand knowledge and family lore, the authors situate the school within the educational trends of the day and New Mexico's cultural milieu.

Wirth and Aldrich examine the influence of the school's controversial director, Albert J. Connell, who was roundly disliked by two of the best-known students, Gore Vidal and William S. Burroughs. Many other students reported their time at the school to be a profoundly positive, often life-changing, experience. Additional chapters recount the growing-up experiences of ranch workers' children and the role the school played in their lives and those of area residents. ... Read more

This book is just fine if all you want is the private school closest to you, or want very cut and dry facts which you can find for free at the schools websites or in their prospectus. If you are looking for insider information, or anything to tell you what the school is really like, look elsewhere. I recommend saving your money for your kid's education.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Informative
On returning to live in the DC area with two small children after having lived in another part of the country, I picked up this book and found a wealth of useful information about schools. The book not only gives practical information, but provides thoughtful and rare insight into the various strengths and weaknesses of each school, as well as valuable guidance on how to pick the best school for a particular child. I recommend this book highly.
