Book Description

Getting a good score on the Miller Analogies Test is often a prerequisite for academic postgraduate study, or for high-level placement in some prominent business firms. It is a 100-question, 50-minute exam that presents verbal analogies in the form of multiple-choice questions in a way that measures both the test taker's analytical skills and his or her general knowledge of history, culture, and world events. This newly updated manual presents a diagnostic pretest and 10 complete practice MAT exams with answers explained plus approximately 1100 additional practice questions with answers. There is also extensive advice on solving analogy problems, short-entry definitions of terms that often appear on the MAT, and tips on coping with test anxiety. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Study Guide
I used this book to prepare for the M.A.T. and it really helped me. I can directly attribute 5 points of my raw score to using this guide. One of the questions was exactly the same as on one of the pretests and the others were things that I wouldn't have refreshed my memory on if I hadn't seen them on the practice exams(Roman numerals and the Greek alphabet). I can't calculate how much better I did as a result of being familiar with the test format and types of word play questions that were on the test but this also undoubtably improved my grade. I ended up in the 94 percentile and I think this book got me into the 90th percentiles. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great help
I used this as one of two books to help me prepare for the test. I found this book to be useful with its lists and practice tests. I scored an 83 raw score with a 98 percentile rank for my degree category. This book was a great help.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Prep -- If you take all the practice tests!
This book provides a good overview of the MAT, how it is structured and what to expect in the way of questions. True, this same information can be downloaded for free from the MAT home site, but this book offers 10 complete practice tests -- more than I could find in any other MAT prep book. Sitting down and taking a practice test properly (100 questions in 50 minutes; no distractions; no cheating) every other day or so in the weeks leading up to the real MAT is the best way to prepare for the test and feel comfortable with the format.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good preparation but not a replacement for education
I just received by score back and so now feel as though I am qualified to say something about what this book really does. When I got the book I sat down and took the pretest. I scored a 61 on the pretest. I needed 47 to be competitive in my school. Despite my exceeding the pretest handily I chose to spend time studying the book and taking more sample tests.
One of the best things about it is explaining the rationale and the typical "common mistakes" section. After concentrating on the "common mistakes" I found probably about 4-5 of my wrong answers were common mistakes in analogies or just failing to fully comprehend the question.
I took the test again and scored an 81. I was shocked. With a background in psychological testing I was more dismayed than happy at the huge discrepancy between first and second tests. Obviously I was better prepared the second time but not THAT much better.
I studied more and went over some of the tables in the back which act as a refresher tutorial for various types of information such as Greek and Roman mythology, etc.
On my second sample test I scored a 73. To be honest I was really questioning the validity of the whole thing given that my scores were so divergent. In general I was doing far better than I needed so I quit worrying and took the test. I scored an 80.
That being said I have to say that while it helped and it made a difference I question whether it would make much of a difference for someone without the same background. I had a strong humanities element to my education and continue to read a wide variety of materials. The MAT to me is a test of a diverse educational background. Those who slept through english and history probably would be helped very little by this book. I have a friend who once said "Paris, that's in France, isn't it?". She could probably read this book for a year and only increase her score by 5 points. For those with a similar background to me you can probably make a big jump up. For ones less so it may buy another 5-10 points. That alone may be worth the price of admission.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book ¿ The Best Value
I've been helping college students prepare for PRAXIS tests for many years. This third edition is the very best, and the most cost effective preparation for Praxis tests.

There is a complete, updated, PPST mathematics, reading and writing review with hundreds of practice questions. There are two realistic practice PPSTs with fully explained answers. If you are taking the computerized PPST, or you are JUST taking the PPST, I recommend Barron's How to Prepare for Praxis I.

The revised PLT section has a thorough review, and a realistic practice test with fully explained answers, along with a review quiz and extra targeted questions. The Listening section reflects the new test with a realistic practice listening test and explained answers.

The all-new Elementary Education sections feature full-length Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, and Content Knowledge tests. Each test has extensive answer explanations. There is also a full length Content Area Exercises test with useful examples of constructed response answers.

The overview of other subject assessments describes many secondary assessments and gives between ten and twenty questions, without answer explanations, for each area. This is just a partial overview, and you should not get the book JUST for this section. My students like it because it is an additional source of often scarce sample questions for these tests.

My students appreciate the multiple choice and constructed response test strategies, the extra help about required state test scores, becoming certified as a teacher, writing a resume, and finding a teaching position.

I recommend this book to every student who will take a Praxis test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practice Test for test #0014 worth the price of the book
Preparing for PraxisII test #0014 is an exercise in futility. Not much is around to help. But Barron's How to Prepare for Praxis" is an excellent beginning. The practice test was more difficult than the one I took (I scored 183 out of 200 qualifying for the ETS Recognition of Excellence and I've been out of school a long time). If math is a problem, I recommend Cliff's Math Review for Standardized Tests by Jerry Bobrow. This book could be renamed "math for dummies" so excellent it is. A must have for the mathematically challenged. I got both at Amazon; quick delivery and no shipping charge!!

Also recommend an online course (Praxis Secrets is excellent) to cut through all the obfuscation test preparers try to throw at you. Historically I was getting in the mid 400's on my SAT because I had no preparation. What a difference a few books make!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Include Barron's in Your Preparation
After trying to franctically prepare for the praxis, I found this study guide especially helpful. This study guide is a must buy! Try to include the offical study guides and tests from ETS and you should be fine. What you should never purchase are any of the CDs from a praxis company called "teaching solutions." Talk about getting had! Watch out for these internet companies! Stick to the best and you'll do the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Absolutely excellent. I aced it because of this book. It is exactly like the test. Worth every penny. Don't take the test without using this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Saved Me!
I haven't taken a math class in 15 years, but passed with a 184 (top 25 percent) because I studied from this book every day for more than a month (you do have to study for an hour a day or so). It is such a relief not to have to take the test a second time! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unparalleled in LSAT Preparation!
I admit it. The LSAT scared me. After countless hours studying Kaplan's LSAT book, I cannot express how relieved I was to discover "The LSAT Advantage." I quickly forgot the headache and heartache of the previous three weeks as Professor Dave demystified the infamous LSAT. His questions and explanations were thorough, yet concise. With a warmhearted tone and in a clever, refreshing style, Professor Dave tackled the LSAT one "day" at a time. "The LSAT Advantage" approaches the LSAT akin to a weekend crash-course, which, in itself, makes this book worthwhile.

The real winner here, however, is the CD-ROM. Whereas other books provide CD-ROMs consisting solely of additional questions, "The LSAT Advantage" CD-ROM contains practical knowledge of the test, law school, and the law itself, through entertaining voice tracks.

Although other LSAT prep books provide tips and tricks, "The LSAT Advantage" provides genuine understanding. So, to anyone who considers purchasing an LSAT preparation book, even if you have another, pick up "The LSAT Advantage." Make a weekend out of it. You won't be disappointed; in fact, you might even find yourself having fun!

UPDATE: "The LSAT Advantage" not only helped me, but it helped two of my friends improve their scores over 10 points after I recommended it to them! I'm finishing up my first year at USC in Los Angeles, and I wouldn't have been here without Professor Dave. Thanks for the great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Professor Dave!
Taking the LSAT was a breeze, with Professor Dave's LSAT Advantage. This book gave me a clear understanding of the flow of the test, the types of questions that would be asked, but most importantly, the STRATEGY to use in answering the questions. The practice tests and questions paralleled the LSAT in an uncanny way. I used only Professor Dave's book, and read through it only once, and got a full 5 points higher than my goal!! Thank you Professor Dave!

5-0 out of 5 stars The materials matched the exam perfectly
This book has a comfortable, casual style despite the strong academic aproach to the exam.
The tips for the Reading Comprehention section were most helpful to me because I was having trouble finishing thre section.
I had looked at several other books my friends were carrying around, and none compares to The LSAT Advantage.

5-0 out of 5 stars 15 Point Gain
THE LSAT Advantage helped me in numerous ways... The "Logical Reasoning" materials were most helpful for me. The detailed strategies, helpful exercises, and numerous practice sets allowed me to fully understand these questions; which are important because "Logical Reasoning" is half the test. Also, the "Reading Comprehension" section provided me with the material and instruction/strategy to tackle these tedious passages. In addition to this, the "Logic Games" section of the book helped map out multiple approaches to each type of game. The LSAT Advantage. It helped ME a ton (rasied my score 15 points), and made me feel very comfortable on test day.

I would like to THANK YOU for your review materials. I recently took the LSAT exam, and I studied using materials from other companies. My preparation was lacking and I had to cancel my score. After the exam, I was thinking of signing up for a live course, however with a full-time job, a wife, two sons, and finishing my Masters in Taxation, it is quite difficult
to find time for a live course. However, since I am determined to continue my pursuit in becoming a tax attorney I decided to buy your book. Within just a couple of weeks, I feel so much more confident for the upcoming December LSAT exam. Thank you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING
This book is a must-have for anyone interested in linguistics, and particularly the social aspects of linguistics. Written by a true expert in the field, the book covers a wide area of its topic and yet still has enough detail (with examples) to back up all the ideas and theories. Includes incorporation of gender preconceptions in speech, power roles in speech, and language construction as it relates to social issues, as well as information on media bias using linguistic techniques.

In this book were many ideas that I'd never even thought about before - it was used as the textbook for what I consider to be the most interesting, engaging course I've taken at the undergraduate level (and it's not even in my major). This is the type of textbook that I would read for personal enjoyment even if I hadn't taken the class - and probably wouldn't be able to put down until I'd finished. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best prep book for the TOEFL
This is the most complete up-to-date preparation book for the new TOEFL Computer Based Test, in fact, it has all the information that you need about the new questions in the CBT. I have the chance to study with Barron's, Peterson's and the Preparation Kit frome ETS, but this prep book is far away from any other I have seen, it is written for the CBT!. It has a lot of practice exercises alike the ones in the TOEFL in 54 units covering Listening, Structure, Reading and Writing. I found very helpful the diagnostic test at the beginning of the book, the 32 quizes and the charts for recording your progress, the thorough description of all the skills that are tested in the TOEFL but above all the friendly approach that makes you feel confortable studying with this book. It comes with 5 cassetes that gives the chance to practice all the type of questions that appear in the tricky Listening section. Of course it takes time, at least two months for using all the material covered in this book. It has four practice tests, but if you want more practice tests it would be recomendable to use it along with the official practice tests of ETS, specially those that comes with the POWERPREP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Content!
This is an excellent piece of art for Toefl test! Especially 10 tests in CD are extremely well-organized and thought provoking. I highly recommend this book and CD. I got help a lot through this book. I am sure that this one is the best book for Toefl test as compared with many other books. Of course, the sound, picture quality of 10 tests is better than that of Toefl and the question level seems to be more difficult than that of Toefl especially in reading section. So if you practice toefl test only with this, you will be embarrassed because the picture and sould in the real toefl test is not that good qualitatively. Neverthless, it is helpful and excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well organized, good level of questions, 10 sample tests
I don't really think you can expect to achieve a great score suddenly just because you have done a prep book or two like this on a test of this kind. I still believe a good way to learn English is watch movies and memorize all the lines, read as many books as possible, and have actual conversations with native speakers as much as possible.

Having said that, it is also true that you need to get used to types of questions you see on the test and by taking the test many times or practice a decent number of questions, you can get your score a little higher (sometimes way higher) than you would without any practices. In this sence, this book is excellent. The level of questions, 10 prep tests that look very similar to the actual test.

But mind you though, the audio quality of the tapes that accompany the book is way better than that of TOEFL. The audio quality of TOEFL is terrible. It's almost like 8 bit recording VS. 24 bit recording. So it's a good idea to at least lower the volume when you practice. POWEPREP is downloadable from the TOEFL website. You need to do this to experience this "wow, what a bad quality" shock before you take an actual test.

I got 220-280 on the first practice, 210-260 on the second test, I only did one prep test on this book and got a similar score. The real test turn out to be in the same range (216-275 or something, although I don't know my real score yet.) I thought the real test was so much easier than the practices you get on the book. I don't really know what I missed. But it's always a good idea to practice a little harder questions.

This book will well prepare you for the test and could possibly bring you a way better score than you would get without any preperation. To get used to the test, I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best guide to TOEFL
I found this book very helpful. It has a lot of tests and very close to the real TOEFL. If one can do all the practice of this book, the person is sure to get good scores.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Introductory Guide to Law School
I picked up Jeff Deaver's guide shortly before I started law school as a One L (first year law student for the uninitiated). Largely, I was looking for information on how to 'brief' a case, which is essential to surviving the case study method Socratic technique that most law schools employeed. The chapter on briefing was concise and easy to read. It was a good starting point. That is also a good way to describe this book: 'a good starting point.'

Deaver attempts to describe everything from why you might want to become a lawyer, taking the LSAT, studying in school, taking a law exam, and finding employment. It is a great overview. On top of that, Deaver doesn't sugar coat anything. When discussing motives for going to school, he discusses the potential wealth to be gained from the profession without reservation or apology. He makes sure to mention the work involved as well, and warns that law school is not the place for the uncommitted.

Anyone who reads this book will probably realize that Deaver has laid out a comprehensive plan for studying and getting through classes. As some other reviewers have mentioned, the method is a bit out dated with advent and rise of computers, but his methods can easily be adapted. After having have completed a couple of weeks of my first year, I have found his ideas to be helpful. However, I have had to manipulate his method to suit my studying method, which I am sure he would approve of.

I would recommend this book for anyone thinking of going to school. It provides plenty of things to think about and other things to research before making the commitment. For the studend that has already been accepted, this is a decent primer for the upcoming school year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Law School Students
I can see why this book is still in print so long after it was first published, because it's advice is invaluable. This book is not just another "what law school is really like" type of thing (although some of that is in there), but focuses mainly on helping you understand those elements of law school which are vital to excelling.

I found four things to be extremely useful. First, this book explains clearly and simply how to write a coherent brief. It gives you a basic outline to follow and tells you how to identify the relevant information in a given case. Second, this book gives a strategy for outlining class notes, textbook material, and other sources in such a way that if you follow the author's advice, you will always be on top of your classwork and will have a huge advantage come crunch time. Third, this book shows how to do well on exams using the outline mentioned above. And fourth, this book gives some good advice on writing papers.

In addition to this, the beginning of the book is a pretty good introduction to preparing for law school, and the end of the book has some good stuff for law school students. I don't regret having bought this book, because now I feel I have a sound strategy for entering law school which I think will help me hit the ground running.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - 3Ls should see Common Sense Rules of Advocacy
Deaver's book is excellent. But if you want to learn how a persuasive lawyer thinks, you should also read Keith Evan's "Common Sense Rules of Advocacy for Lawyers."

Mr. Evans tried hundreds of jury trials as a trial lawyer in California for many years, after a decade as a barrister in England. He also taught as an adjunct law professor and gave many presentations to American Inns of Court.

More information about Evans' book is available on its web site: or search Amazon for ISBN 1587330059

If you want to know what law school is about, buy "The Complete Law School Companion". When you are a 3L, or after law school, get "Common Sense Rules of Advocacy for Lawyers."

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Powerful, Like a Fine Deodorant
Granted, I haven't had the opportunity yet to implement Jeff Deaver's LCM (Legal Concept Management) system, but I am very impressed by its rigor and comprehensiveness, and am confident that it will be an indispensable asset in my quest for success in the study of law.

In short, I strongly recommend this book for any one considering going to law school.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad But Don't Even Think About It If...
You haven't read "Law School Confidential" - LSC is far and away better all comparable aspects plus contains plenty that this book does not. LSC also draws on the experiences and advice of many fresh perspectives rather than just one. Also consider that 1992 is rapidly becoming outdated. Don't go with this one unless you have to. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my school career!
All through high school and college nobody ever teaches you how to learn. Some students may have older siblings or parents who have excelled in school and can let them in on the secrets, but I, unfortunately, wasn't one of them. I couldn't figure out why I had to study so much and didn't do well on tests when others seemed to be doing much better than I was. I rarely aced a test. Then this book was recommended to me by another student and it has totally changed the way think about my classes and mostly how to take notes and actually learn and do well on tests. It also increases your self-esteem because you don't feel like beating yourself up or dropping a class when you do poorly on a test. This is the best money you will spend in school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Robinson knows what he is talking about
"What Smart Students Know" is a five star book because it is a ground breaking book. Robinson has two remarkable qualities as a writer and thinker: he knows how things REALLY work, and is NOT AFRAID to tell you. He used theses two abilities to crack open the SAT in his book "Cracking the SAT", and now he has blown wide open our educational system in "What Smart Students Know". I have been through the educational system, from high school through graduate school, and can only say that Robinson has it all nailed down. From the personal biases of teachers to the incorrect model of learning that all schools embrace. It may be controversial, it may be upsetting, but Robinson is going to tell you how schools really work and how you can use this knowledge to take control of your education and succeed. Through my years of schooling I saw over and over and over again examples of the author's discoveries. Many times after seeing something crazy or hearing something hard to believe (like a student that a teacher liked begin given an "A" after getting half the questions wrong) I would think "Wow, Robinson mentioned that kind of bias in his book!".

As a side note, there is another wonderful book out there that helped me as much as Adam Robinson's in terms of learning and getting good grades. It is Tony Buzan's book "Use Both Sides of Your Brain". It is equally groundbreaking, but it concentrates more on how we understand and process information. It is a fun, slim book that will change your life.

To conclude, Adam Robinson should be in charge of overhauling our education system. He is THAT good. When he speaks, our educational system must listen.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Smart Students Know by Adam Robinson
I have received this book on March 2004 from my father. When I got it, I started to read the book through the school year. I found out many helpful hints and strategies that I can use in school to excell more. I really thank Adam for this book,

2-0 out of 5 stars NO SIR I DIDN'T LIKE IT
I didn't like it. The note writing seemed to complicated for me (don't know if i'm just lazy or dumn or it just too too much time) i just didn't find it that helpful. But it sounds like others did, diff'rent strokes..

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning, Not Studying, are the Means and the Goal
This book could reshape a student's thinking about education, for example, blaming a teacher or a school for not teaching still does not help students learn. The student must learn to want and find learning. This book shows the student several ways to put knowledge in the student's head as part of the student's day. What the teacher or school board is doing or not doing may help or hinder the student but at the end of the day, what matters is what the student put in his or her head as an act of the student's responsibility for himself or herself.

My guess is the author (perhaps he has a touch of Luddite as expressed in his take on computers in the last part of the book) prefers verbal to math subjects. That is why the math suggestions may touch a responsive chord for math haters. The book provides concrete techniques. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book you want to see before the test.
This book neither tells you how to solve the problems nor what knowledge you are expected to have before the test. This book contains only problems and answers. When you think you are ready for the test, this is the book you want to use. This book contains four actual tests and helps you time your exam and get used to the style of the exam. I found "Physics: The Easy Way by Robert L. Lehrman" a good book to review the kind of things asked in GRE physics test. In GRE physics test you are asked a hundred small questions which can be solved almost without calculation. You want to review the essentials and get used to the style of the exam for high score.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just the tests
Sadly, this publication by ETS contains nothing but 3 old GRE physics exams of (presumably) retired questions. The correct answers and the scoring statistics are given, but there is nothing in the way of explanation or discussion or strategies for attacking the test. Still, you should probably get this because its the only place you can get your hands on ETS's actual problems. Other books that purport to train you for the GRE often disturbingly misunderstand what kind of things ETS expects you to know and do on the exam. This book is only helpful if you invest a lot of time in it, but I still reccommend it highly if you plan on taking the physics GRE.

3-0 out of 5 stars not the greatest
This book wasn't very helpful, and the organization was confusing. This book is only good for its practice tests - I did a couple of those and got a 750.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, Typical of Barron's in Many Ways
This is the best preparation for the Literature SAT II that one can hope for, given the nature of the test; that is, improving your score in Literature is not a simple matter of learning new vocabulary words or memorizing formulas.

It's very much akin to the Critical Reading Section of the SAT I, with a few key difference: Poetry makes up half of the test, Prose selections are usually shorter, and literary definitions beyond the ubiquitous "metaphor" and "similie" are (infrequently) required. Beyond learning the extra literary definitions needed for the test, there's not much you can do (short-term) to improve your score.

HOWEVER, to ensure you know all of these terms, Ms. Myers-Shaffer gives you all of them and more in this book. In fact, the number of literary concepts, and examples of these concepts in literature, make this book an invaluable resource for English courses. Not to mention the fact that the 2 Diagnostic tests and 7 practice tests give you TONS of practice, with a body of lit that is representative of what you'll see on the test.

Keep in mind that the questions on the sample tests are more difficult than the real thing (typical of Barron's)... I took it on 12/00 and got a 710 by answering only 50/60 questions, which is a Raw Score of about 44 according to "Real SAT II: Subject Tests." On the other hand, I got this book afterwards and consistently got a 40-42/60 while taking 70 minutes. For both tests I need to work on my speed, but you can tell that your scores in this book will tend to be 50-100 points lower when taken under test-like conditions.

And yes, without the extra familiarity with format and concepts you'll get from this book, the Literature test is hard.... that 710 came after I got an 800 on the Verbal SAT I and an 800 on the Writing SAT II. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful learning aid for A and P students
My study group and I used this book for our anatomy and physiology class in our undergrad. We are all visual learners and found it quite useful for learning the various muscles, bones
and organs in the body. We are found the following very helpful which is also on amazon:

5-0 out of 5 stars Get a pencil and learn well
Studying grammar is something most people prefer to avoid. We all know it can help us write better, but we cringe at the thought of "going back to school." I happen to be different: I am a bit of a nerd, and I make my living teaching people to write better at work. After teaching one of my courses, I am often asked by students to name a few good books they can read to continue to improve their writing. This book is the only book I recommend for learning or reviewing grammar.

I tell them the truth: I sat down with a pencil and worked through every lesson and exercise in the book. And I (re)learned a ton. I also tell them that I wrote lightly, because I think I will do it again every few years, just as I do with The Elements of Style. Unfortunately, grammar is a subject that requires periodic review if you are serious about staying sharp in your writing at work. This workbook makes it as painless as possible and costs almost nothing.

I rated this book 5 stars because I think it is superior in all categories for a workbook: comprehensive content, structured lessons, abundant exercises, authoritative author, and low price.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ideal Self-study Text
I wholeheartedly agree with the previous review of this textbook. I have been searching a long time for a self-study textbook on English grammar with the features mentioned in the previous review. Besides adult self-study learners, I daresay that this textbook would serve as an excellent companion for students in secondary schools.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just right!
I have read upto page 42 out of total 147 pages (excluding answers to Practice Exercises). I like the book very much and I find it easy to read, logically organised and the coverage and approach is just right! Besides, the book is handy to carry around (smaller than A4 size and not thicker than 200 pages - this is important for non full-time students). Moreover, the practice exercises are realistic enough to test your understanding of what you've read. I highly recommend this book to students, adult learners and really anyone who would like to review ESSENTIAL grammar. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pick it up!
Any student intimidated by the increased demands of the college curriculum should immediately read this book. The material is well-organized, focused, and always practical in its approach. In addition, many of the book's recommendations are equally relevent to developing a successful approach to life and career in the "real world" after college.Highly recommended for students and non-students alike!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Graduation Gift!
I bought many copies of Cal's book for friends, relatives, people I know who are graduating, and, of course, myself. To put it simply: This book is life-changing! Every single person I've given the book to has loved it (even 'unmotivated' students who I thought wouldn't read it). As a gift or for your own reading pleasure, this book will not disappoint!

5-0 out of 5 stars By Far The Best College Guide Available
There are plenty of books about how to get IN to college, but this is the only one about how to stand out once you're there. This book easy to use (you can jump in at any of the "rules" and still follow along), the advice is extremely helpful, and it doesn't talk down to students.I especially liked the pointers on writing papers and studying for exams while avoiding all-nighters."How to Win" should be a mandatory part of any college orientation.

my little brother is going to st. andrews next fall.he asked me, a recent nyu graduate, if i had any sage advice on how to do well.i told him 'nope.i did it the hard way.all nighters & pestilence."but there's a better way.this alleged 23 year old 'cal newport' seems to have writtenprecisely the book i should have had back in 2000 when i still had a shot at doing things right.i regret nothing but like i told my bro, read this book and take advantage of the tips you'll learn, cause you won't get them from your professors or your peers.a book for that rare kid willing to seek out advice on how to succeed in college.this book won't disappoint.

5-0 out of 5 stars A College Guide Actually About College...
I wish I'd had this book in college. There seem to be a million breezy, humorous books about college life on the shelves, but they're all about cooking, cleaning, reducing stress and buying futons. This one is better than most at breezy humor, but it gets five stars because it's about COLLEGE: the core tasks of getting good grades, an employable resume, and the critical thinking skills necessary for a richer appreciation of life. My little brother is starting Harvard next year, and I've bought him a copy. Hard to believe the college-survival genre has been around so long and this book is just being published now. ...
