Very reflective of the real test
This book is the best of its kind. The questions are extremely similar to the ones one will see during the actual test.

Give a Glimpse of the Actual Test
Being published by ETS, this book will give you a look of what the actual test looks like. This workbook comes with 5 (five) practice tests, all with reviews and explanations. I use all the practice tests, before I work with the ETS PowerPrep. Combined with PowerPrep, this workbook should give us some predictions of our actual score might end up.

Although, this workbook is packed with practice test, it doesn't have thorough explanations on how to attack specific questions. So, you have to buy other books as a companion. I use Barron's as well as Cliffs, to be my companion.

very good but no explination
I have read this book and I found it very helpful for me to improve my score. However, if you want a book that will expalin how you should deal with toefl and has grammer, reading explination, this is not the book. This is only tests.

The book you want to go through before the test.
This is definitely the book all TOEFL test takers need to go through before the test to be familiar with the type of questions you will see in the actual exam. This book tells you the direction to prepare for the exam to get a high score. As today's TOEFL is computer based attached CD-ROM is very helpful to get used to the style of the actual CBT TOEFL.

Although this book itself is a great preparation book for TOEFL, for higher scores test takers want to have a strong English language background together with the specific test taking skills presented in this book. Frequently asked English idioms in TOEFL are nicely summarized in a concise book, "Handy Book Of Commonly Used American Idioms, Revised" and I found it very helpful even in listening comprehension section.

The test taking skills from "TOEFL Test Preparation Kit" and idiomatic knowledge from "Handy Book Of Commonly Used American Idioms, Revised" provide the most efficient way to get high score in TOEFL.

The best resource of TOEFL practice questions
I've reviewed this edition before, and you should be able to see my review below. I'm writing now to complement my previous review.

This edition is essentially a re-packaged version of the previous edition, even if the cover and the graphics look different.

This set is one of the most important sets of practice tests available on the market and is the second most important TOEFL volume to buy after the PowerPrep!! In other words, buy the PowerPrep first, then buy this edition for more practice.

A couple of important points: First, the TOEFL is supposed to undergo major changes in 2004, so if you're not planning to take the test before then, you might not want to get this book. Second, this book contains very few explanations; one of the practice sections of this book has explanations, but TOEFL has used this same "explained test" in all of their publications since 1995. Finally, this publication does NOT contain any computer practice tests--you'll need the PowerPrep for that. The CD-ROM that comes with this set is only a tutorial--the practice is only a few minutes long for each section, and you will NOT get a score. ... Read more

quite good BUT
Listening section does not contain Audio CD, why are not these excersises on the CDROM?! The attached CDROM has less than 300MB and typical cdrom can contain more than 600MB!!!
The Structure section does not contain enough exercises. Some parts are easy for me and I need just 4-5 sentences to see if I understand the problem. Others are more tricky and they contain only 8 examples?! I am taking the test in four weeks, so I will see how much helpful the book was.

It definately help!!
I've went through this book and worked on all the practice test on the disk, it really helped me to understand the test format in real test condition and provided concentrated review material in different sections.The only drawback will be the tapes included are too clear, which is really different from the real test (it's a bit muffle in the real test)lucky I went through the free toefl practice test material available on the toefl website on the day I took the test and realise that.Anyway, I got 280 points with the help of the book..really satisfy with the result!It's worth to try.

"Best in show"
A work of art. This book is worth every penny. It costs so much because of the smooth & thick expensive-looking paper.Well written, I found it to have the best essay writing section. But does not include CD's to listen to native english speakers, you must buy them seperate.

The best Essay section explanation ever.
1) The best Essay section. After doing all excercises you will able to map out a very good essay within 30 minutes. I had Kaplan, Princenton, Cliff's, Barrons, and Delta, but this essay section is much much better. Any one who would like to have good score for essay needs the book.
2) Grammar section does not reflect real exam. Make no sense to practice problems you won't meet on the test. There is a lot of junk information which has never been used on the test. I took the test twice so did friends of mine. Remarkably enough, ETS and authors of the book have different perspective for English grammar. Problems heavily emphasized in the book will most likely completely ignored on an actual exam.
3) Reading section is very good.
4) Listening comprehension is good, particularly in terms of phrasal verbs and idioms.
5) There are 7 full lenght tests on the CD Rom.
For more practice with real full scale computer tests I can recommend you to buy Delta's Key for Toefl Tests (10 tests) or Cliff's (6 tests). In addition, Cliff's has very useful grammar section.

Best prep book for the TOEFL
This is the most complete up-to-date preparation book for the new TOEFL Computer Based Test, in fact, it has all the information that you need about the new questions in the CBT. I have the chance to study with Barron's, Peterson's and the Preparation Kit frome ETS, but this prep book is far away from any other I have seen, it is written for the CBT!. It has a lot of practice exercises alike the ones in the TOEFL in 54 units covering Listening, Structure, Reading and Writing. I found very helpful the diagnostic test at the beginning of the book, the 32 quizes and the charts for recording your progress, the thorough description of all the skills that are tested in the TOEFL but above all the friendly approach that makes you feel confortable studying with this book. It comes with 5 cassetes that gives the chance to practice all the type of questions that appear in the tricky Listening section. Of course it takes time, at least two months for using all the material covered in this book. It has four practice tests, but if you want more practice tests it would be recomendable to use it along with the official practice tests of ETS, specially those that comes with the POWERPREP.

Excellent Content!
This is an excellent piece of art for Toefl test! Especially 10 tests in CD are extremely well-organized and thought provoking. I highly recommend this book and CD. I got help a lot through this book. I am sure that this one is the best book for Toefl test as compared with many other books. Of course, the sound, picture quality of 10 tests is better than that of Toefl and the question level seems to be more difficult than that of Toefl especially in reading section. So if you practice toefl test only with this, you will be embarrassed because the picture and sould in the real toefl test is not that good qualitatively. Neverthless, it is helpful and excellent!

Well organized, good level of questions, 10 sample tests
I don't really think you can expect to achieve a great score suddenly just because you have done a prep book or two like this on a test of this kind. I still believe a good way to learn English is watch movies and memorize all the lines, read as many books as possible, and have actual conversations with native speakers as much as possible.

Having said that, it is also true that you need to get used to types of questions you see on the test and by taking the test many times or practice a decent number of questions, you can get your score a little higher (sometimes way higher) than you would without any practices. In this sence, this book is excellent. The level of questions, 10 prep tests that look very similar to the actual test.

But mind you though, the audio quality of the tapes that accompany the book is way better than that of TOEFL. The audio quality of TOEFL is terrible. It's almost like 8 bit recording VS. 24 bit recording. So it's a good idea to at least lower the volume when you practice. POWEPREP is downloadable from the TOEFL website. You need to do this to experience this "wow, what a bad quality" shock before you take an actual test.

I got 220-280 on the first practice, 210-260 on the second test, I only did one prep test on this book and got a similar score. The real test turn out to be in the same range (216-275 or something, although I don't know my real score yet.) I thought the real test was so much easier than the practices you get on the book. I don't really know what I missed. But it's always a good idea to practice a little harder questions.

This book will well prepare you for the test and could possibly bring you a way better score than you would get without any preperation. To get used to the test, I highly recommend it.

Best guide to TOEFL
I found this book very helpful. It has a lot of tests and very close to the real TOEFL. If one can do all the practice of this book, the person is sure to get good scores.

Good practice, a newer version is available
The ISBN of the new version is 0886852056. You should buy that instead of this package.

This is the second best source of TOEFL practice questions now available. This set is a great resource for TOEFL practice. It has practice, answers, scoring tables, scripts for the listening sections, and a demo version of the computer TOEFL.

If you cannot find the 1998 Kit, this kit is also very good. However, just like all other TOEFL materials, this book does NOT include explanations.

The big problem, though, is that these questions are a little outdated. Most of my students can score higher on these tests than they can on the real TOEFL.

Same tests as previous edition, different cover!!
Why does TOEFL always do this? They change the cover, and they even change the ISBN, but inside, they're still the same tests as the previous edition, ISBN 0446396427.

A good practice tests book to work for TOEFL
This book was helpful for practice. It has a lot of exercises that let you get closer to the high score of TOEFL. As the saying goes "Practice makes it perfect".

Helpful Book!
By the time I bought this book, I already use Barron's TOEFL Preparation book. I bought it just to make comparison, perhaps there are something that are not covered by Barron's. In the end I find that in short ammount of time, I couldn't read and memorize all the patterns explain in Barron's. So about one or more weeks before the test I switch to this book.

This book is quite simple. The writer give you a brief explanation on how to attack some questions, then give you some exercises on how to do it. I like the vocabulary exercise. Although they're not part of the test, but it helps me alot in reading comprehension.

In the end, this book... is helpful enough for you who are already advanced in English. But the questions on structure in my humble opinion is quite easy. I correctly answers, almost all of the structure questions., eventhough I am not an advanced English user.

Great book
Not as beautiful a book as the CAMBRIDGE test book but has a better section on grammar and includes an audio CD. All this for less money than most toefl books.

USEFUL BOOK
The book is really very useful.
1) Comprehensive grammar. I have hardly ever seen so broad and full grammar section although I had Kaplan, Barrons, Cambridge, and Princenton. If you have problem with grammar review buy this book. Moreover, mini tests after each grammar subsection reinforce you memory. In addition, the grammar looks like very close to that in real test.
2) Reading section is also very good. The book presents a lof of helpful techniques how to approach to reading section of the test. This section also can be qualified as the best among Toefl tests books.
3) Listening section is fair. Listening comprehension section is much better in Kaplan and Delta Key for the Toefl test.
4) Book is very effective in terms of practicing the test. 6 full scale test included in the book allowe you get used to toefl pacing and timing.
Generally, there is no single book for the Toefl. As I mentioned, Kaplan is better for listening comprehension part while Cambridge Preparation for the Toefl Test is definitely the best for Essay section. If you know English well and need only practice I recommend you buy Delta Key for the Toefl Test with CD Rom. The Delta's CD has 10 !!! tests.

The best Toefl grammar book, but....
The only worth section of this book is the Grammar section. Even if you were at intermediate English-level, you'll improve up to Advanced student. The small details are very helpful to determine test tricks, and common rules - to correct them. So, if you want 600 and more, read it carefully and then review it one more time. But, you'll need another source for practice. Its tests are easier than on actual test( I did 100% on Barron's grammar, but scored 630 on actual test).Not worth to spend time on listening or reading. It would be better to do listening on TOEFL Preparation Kit and reading on Cambridge's or Peterson's TOEFL.

Second-best resource
This book is the second-best book on TOEFL after Educational Testing Services' (ETS) TOEFL book.

Boring Book
The first time I read this book, I look at the study plan to master this whole book. It said it took about 12 weeks to master all material there, which is not adequate for me, because I need to take TOEFL in about a month. So I begin to do accelerated read of this book. Unfortunately it's not an experience that I would like to do again. This book bored me, especially the grammar part.

The grammar part actually is very concise. A number of patterns and styles were given there. But they organized this book in a boringly style. About 140 patterns and 30 styles were there for us to memorize, but only few exercises to be done. For the other parts, this book is not the right book. Besides that, the model test, which consists of 8 models, is quite easy.

OUTDATED
1)The problems in the book are very outdated. (for grammar section buy Cliff's or Longman)
2)The problems in the book are less difficult than those on a real exam.
3)The problems in the book were arranged in very boring manner.
4)The CD-Rom is only for Listening. (for more computer practice buy Delta's Key for Toefl Test with CD, which has 10 tests or Cambridge Preparation for Toefl Test, which has 7 tests. Both books have CD-Rom simulated CBT.)
5) The Essay section is fair. (for the best essay section buy Cambridge Preparation for the Toefl Test)
Generally, there is no one book for the preparation for the TOEFL. Most likely you will need some combination of them.
For instance,
a) Delta for practice and reading. Moreover, you may wish to buy just Delta CD Rom without book and cassets for practice only;
b)Cliff's or Longman for grammar;
c)Cambridge for essay and for practice.

A lot of my friends recommended this book for me, but I didn't really appreciate their advice until I took the test. The book leads you step-by-step into establishing a good base of English for the test, or at least refresh the knowledge that you already have. I believe that I owe a significant portion of my 287 CBT (660 paper based equivalent) score to this book. With it's eight model tests on the CD, which are far more difficult than that in the actual test, you'll be well prepared. There seems to be a problem with the Adaptive Test in the CD though, it gives quite strange scores at the end, but overall, this book is the best book that you can buy to get the score that you want in TOEFL. ... Good as an Additional Text
The attractive thing about "How to Prepare for the Toeic Test : Test of English for International Communication" is that it's good value for money. You get six full TOEIC practice tests, as well as some mini-tests, and a full coverage of every section of the test. Unlike some other reviewers, I found the explanation section quite good and well-detailed, but most of my students have complained about the ease of the practice tests in comparison to the real TOEIC test -- this does not have to be a big problem. I teach a TOEIC preparation program at Cambridge International College in Melbourne, Australia, and, as a result of my students' feedback, I now use this book during the first and part of the second week into the course to drill my students for harder tests. By the time the students have finished the six practice tests in this book, they are ready to move to harder tests that reflect more the level of difficulty in the real TOEIC test. Some of the answers at the back of the book have errors in them, but no so many that you should be too concerned. Overall, it's a great tool for low-level to intermediate TOEIC students, or advanced students who want to start low and build up from there with other text books. It is a great teacher's tool, but it might be a little difficult for some students if used as a self-teaching book.

Overall it's a useful book
I am an ESL teacher using this book with students in Japan. I most like the large number of sample questions, including several full-length tests and accompanying CD's. One problem, though, is that Loughheed's explanations are difficult for even my advanced-level non-native speakers to understand. However, they are very helpful to me as a teacher in explaining how to solve problems. What I do is review his explanations myself before class, then use them as a tool to help teach things to my students as they work through the sample problems. The test section does not include a table giving a model TOEIC score. I wrote the author about this, and he said a conversion chart would be included in the next edition. He also kindly sent me a conversion chart.
Overall, it was a useful book and I will continue using it with future students.

Not terrible, but mostly confusing, unenligtening
Barron’s How to Prepare for the TOEIC Test has both positive and negative points, but the negatives outweigh the positives. First off, the positives. (...) You get six complete TOEIC practice tests and a fair number of practice exercises for each of the seven sections. All of these exercises somewhat approximate an actual ETS TOEIC test. In addition, the author gives explanatory answers to the practice tests and exercises. However, this is where the positives of Barron’s book end. On the negative side, the author’s analysis of the construction of the TOEIC is very confusing. For example, his presentation of the material in the listening comprehension sections is less than helpful. It attempts to mix all four sections together which, in my opinion, doesn’t work well. Peterson’s TOEIC Success presents this listening material in a much clearer manner. In addition, the author’s analysis of Parts 5 and 6 (grammar) of the reading section leaves much to be desired. Simply put, the grammar points reviewed in the Barron’s book are not an exact reflection of the grammar you will find an actual TOEIC test. I do feel that the author’s analysis of Part 7, the reading comprehension section, is the stronger than his analysis of Parts 1-6. For Part 7, he provides a useful “question type chart” and realistic TOEIC-style reading passages. However, even here, there are problems: The reading passages are on the short side and there is an overabundance of chart-type passages. Overall, Barron’s How to Prepare for the TOEIC Test is not terrible, but mostly confusing and unenlightening. Buy this book if you want a lot of practice tests, but not as a way of giving you a full understanding of the construction of the TOEIC exam.

Super TOEFL Help!
This book is a wonderful tool for anyone studying for the TOEFL. Teachers of English as a Second Language can also use this as a resource in planning lessons when helping students prepare for the test.

The CD-ROM is especially helpful since so many students are taking the CBT these days. The hints and tips included in the book will give students guidance and help them feel more at ease when they encounter the real test. The language in the book is not too complicated, but is not condescending either. The writers really seem to understand their readers.

All of the information in the book, along with studying, can help students achieve better scores on their TOEFLs. The realistic practice guides and practical suggestions are the best available.

Much thought has gone into the organization and content of this study guide, and students will find it most helpful! This book is highly recommended!

Very Helpful Book
I am a student from Nagoya, Japan. I was shopping for a good TOEFL book and my friend recommended this book to me. Like he said, I also found this book very helpful. This book had everything - grammar, listening, reading, etc. It has study sections as well as practice test sections. I liked the book's CD-ROM. It was very easy to use and very realistic. When I went to take the actual TOEFL test, I wasn't worried about using the computer so much because I had already practiced with this CD-ROM. This is a very nice book. It is very much worth your money. I recommend this book to all students who are studying English. Thank you.

Lingua TOEFL CBT Insider:The Super Guide
This book is actually "The Super Guide". It has everything you need to prepare for the TOEFL test. The grammar tips are clear and easy to understand. Reading and Listening sections are both very realistic. I think this book is more like the actual test than any other TOEFL prep books. I especially enjoyed the helpful tips on how to score high on the test. My English actually improved after studying this book. I strongly recommened it to everybody who's studying for the TOEFL.

This is a very well organized book.

The book contains very useful information on not only how to prepare but also on how to score high on the actual test.

The structure section gives clear and detailed explanations on confusing grammar points. The listening section of the book is fantastic, too, with realistic pages and helpful hints and tips for the actual test. The reading section also contains useful tips and prepares you well for a high score on the TOEFL CBT.

The CD-rom included in the book was very useful. It was just like taking the actual TOEFL test at the center. If you are not so comfortable with or worried about using the computer at the center, you MUST practice using this CD-rom.

One of the best for TOEFL!
I used this book as a sole source for my TOEFL preparation and I've got a 627. Extremely useful especially if you don't have much time to prepare for the exam.

Waste of time and money
I bought this book because my teacher recommended me and i thought that the real toefl test would be easy. I took the test and i couldn't believe how different it was from the book. Now i changed my teacher and i do not recommend the longman prep to anyone. If you really want to be prepared for the test, practice with the ETS and see the difference.

A book that increases the score and shortens the time
I have been preparing students for TOEFL examinations for over 2 years and this is my number one book. Compared to Barron's , Peterson's or other preparation materials, Deborah Phillips' book gives the student the chance to actually improve their scores by focusing on how to think and approach the test. In the case of "Structure and written expression" section, for instance,the results were amazing. When doing the preliminary test most of my students not only got wrong more than half of the exercices, but they were also unable to finish in time, which meant even more mistaken answers. Time is of crucial importance! After having completed the preparation in this book, first, all of them managed to finish in time and second, the number of errors dropped dramatically (from 20 out of 40 to 10 and even 5). All my students have used this book and all have scored above 550 in the TOEFL examination. It's been a valuable and indispensable instument for me and I highly reccomend it.

The course is a lot easier than the actual TOEFL test!
What a waste of money! After finishing the course, I was sure to get the 600 I needed, but to my astonishment, the actual test was a lot more difficult than the course!

An average TOEFL prep book with glaring weaknesses.
This TOEFL prep book does not adequately prepare advanced students for listening, grammar, or reading problems. The content in the listening and grammar sections is off-base. Worse is the reading section which contains readings which are often less than one half the length of actual readings on the test.
