5-0 out of 5 stars Spritual weight lifting!
If you are looking for a tool to build some spiritual muscle- the inductive study method is one heck of a workout! Kay Arthur trancends denomination and gets you into the meat of the word with a challenging and detailed series of steps. If you really put the time and effort into learning this method, no other study will seem quite enough. You will learn to let scripture interpret scripture and learn the rule of context (which is that "context rules!"). Like any fitness goal, with time and persistance you will attain such a level of spiritual fitness that you will be able to dicern whether the pastors you hear, and the commentaries you read, are grounded in the truth of God's word or not. It will help you filter whatever teaching you encounter through the eyes of personally learned truth. Kay Arthur isn't self promoting, she's bible promoting. And as far as spiritual fitness goes- in my opinion she's the Arnold Schwartzenager of bible study!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study tool...
I've been a Precept student for over a decade now, and there's nothing like this. In fact, this tool is so good (as are Precept's study courses) that seminarys across NA recognize it as solid... some will even transfer Precept courses for accreditation towards a degree. If you want to get serious about your time in the Word and want to find meat instead of fluff, then this is the best place you could start - learning how to interpret and apply the Scriptures for yourself. The methods that Precept Ministries teach are solid and true - the novice to the scholar can can benefit from this form of study method. This book shows you how to do everything from word studies to structured analysis of text. Excellent stuff through and through and highly rewarding for the serious Bible student. Get a copy and dig in!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good study guide
Looking to get in-depth with your Bible Study? This is the book for you. The inductive method is perhaps the most intense type of Bible study. It also requires the most amount of work.

Arthur's book does an excellent job of providing an introduction to inductive study. I say introduction because this is not a long book and does not go into extensive detail on any one point. Listed below are some of the pros and cons I saw in this book:

Pros:
1) The book is very easy to follow. The language is plain and simple. A degree in theology is not necesary to understand what is being taught.

2) The appendixes and examples given are very well thought out and helpful. I've no doubt I'll be referring to this in the future.

3) This book teaches you how to study the Bible for yourself. You are given all the tools necessary. The author is obviously not a fan of commentaries as a first stop in Bible study but she does recommend you refer to them after you have done your own investigation.

Cons:
1) This book is short. It does not go into great detail in any one of its topics. This could be a problem for someone trying to use the inductive method just from reading this book. It's possible but could be difficult. It almost seems necessary to seek out one of the seminars on inductive study offered by the author. This gets to the second con.....

2) The constant referrals to other works by this author (In particular the New Inductive Study Bible) gets a little out of hand. After the first couple chapters I had had quite enough of the advertisements. Granted this was directing you to resources that could help but the repetition was very annoying. No doubt these are fine works. I was just tired of hearing about them.....

All in all I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a more in-depth Bible study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Bible Study Aid!
Arthur's title is an excellent supplement for anyone who wishes to know more about the Holy Bible.

Among the many points covered in the book include:

1. Basic principles of observation, interpretation, and application.
2. Be sure to understand the context of a Bible passage.
3. 7 principles for accurate Bible interpretation.
4. Word study tools.
5. Principles in overviewing a book of the Bible.
6. Different literary devices (parable, allegory, etc.).
7. Different ways writers of the Bible presented their thoughts.
8. Outlining a book of the Bible.

All in all, an excellent supplement for helping you learn more about the Bible!

Read and enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple techniques for serious study
Arthur's Inductive Method of Bible study is a wonderful technique for probing the depths of Scripture and discovering truth for oneself. This guide coaches you through observation, interpretation, and application of the Word of God. It's a little weak in the application section, but the heart of inductive study is the observation: what exactly does it say?
Many helpful appendices are included, particularly how to use Greek study tools to gain deeper meaning from the text.
The only drawback to this method is that some people may want more surfactory and less time-consuming method. But then again, as Arthur notes in the book's introduction, "Greatness is never achieved nor dreams realized apart from great discipline."
If you want to do the inductive method, I recommend the New Inductive Study Bible (NASB translation) or one of the new ESV Deluxe Reference Bibles because of their thicker pages, wide margins, large font, cross-references, and literal translation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wounded Healer
Henri Nouwen has been blessed with true vision of the human condition. Mr. Nouwen has also been gifted with the answers to solve the condition of "Nuclear Man" and isolation. Anyone who is a minister or healer of any kind should read this book. It is a "must read". I appreciated Mr. Nouwen's synopsis' at the end of each chapter. This truly helped me to "drive the point home". I thank Mr. Nouwen for writing this book. I am presently reading his "Return of the Prodigal Son" book. Another "must read" book if one is interested in reaching the center of man.

Gratefully, Teri Lynn Schons

4-0 out of 5 stars A paradigm for ministry in the modern world
What does it mean to be a minister (a healer, if you will) in the world of today, to a rootless generation, to people who suffer loneliness and alienation? Henri Nouwen proposed that the wounds of the "wounded healer" can be a source of healing for others. Although this is a short book, it is very profound, and I'm not sure I totally grasped everything Nouwen was trying to say. He moves from the very practical third chapter (a case study of a one-on-one encounter between a clinical pastoral trainee and a lonely dying patient) to the rather esoteric fourth chapter (focusing on the wounded healer) which could have used more practical illustrations. This is a book that probably needs to be read several times, but it can be extremely valuable for the minister, and for everyone else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Confronting the 'Essentials' of Ministry
As a young person seeking meaning in a difficult world, I have found Nouwen's work (every book I've read of his, actually) to clearly confront the ills of society, incorporating them into authentic Christian discipleship.
Every priest, minister, layperson or questioning individual should pick up this brief - yet poignant - account of what it is to relate to others in the modern world. Nouwen consistently cultivates the meaning of authentic relationships one must have between him/herself, God, and those met in life.
This is a must-read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy it, read it, and live it...
I found myself not agreeing with all of Henri's cultural analysis, but I don't have to. His work is still inspiring while at the same time not entertaining any moral high ground arrogance. Nouwen is down to earth and spiritually minded at the same time, he cares about people and you can't go wrong with that. Open and honesty, loving and kind, the book will encourage you to treat people the way they want to be treated---as human beings. Buy it, read it, and live it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A welcomed guide through the wild
Nouwen offers a deep challenge to those who would minister the Love of Christ in this world. Using his characteristically insightful prose Nouwen articulates the post-modern dilema (he calls post-modernity the dilema of "nuclear man"). From there he proceeds to challenge traditional models of ministry, preaching and healing. Nouwen, I would argue through his own expierence, teaches those who would minister to lead others towards the healing love of Christ. He creatively suggests that ministers should change hats, leading people to freedom by articulating empathetically their own woundedness. In essence he is both challenging and inviting the Church to be a fellow wounded traveler in and through the darkness of our wounded world. It is a brilliant work that rewards re-reading. ... Inside are pictures of Thomas Kinkade's work which are absolutely gorgous and inspiritational. If you are in the market to buy a new bible this is one I highly recommending purchasing. I was lucky enough to receive this as a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Illuminating the Message
I can think of no finer artist to illustrate the Message than Thomas Kinkade! This magnificent volume is generously filled with his heart warming illustrations. Appropriately, his talent with a brush conveys his ability to capture the light and illuminate from within. I feel a stronger connection reading God's word with this Bible than I do with the one I have had for three decades. Indeed, worthy of being an heirloom!

5-0 out of 5 stars NKJV Family Bible Review
This is a great Bible, even if you buy it for just yourself. It is a New King James version, so it still has a definite poetic ring to it, yet it is fairly easy to understand. It also has beautiful illustrations that I sometimes spend hours looking at. This is a great Bible for anyone! The whole thing is flawless. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
This book is a study of the names of God. However, I found some of the commentary and discussion points a stretch - discussing sexual abuse when studying the account of Hagar.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study
Studying the names of God is a great way to increase your love and devotion to Him, and this easy workbook will help you. Kay style of teaching allows you to discover the truth from Scripture for yourself instead of taking her word for it. The result is an exciting, multi-week focus on the God who gives us life and peace. He is worth knowing intimately!

There's also a beautiful coffee table version of this book, re-edited for crisper text and illustrated by Timothy Botts. If it's still in print, it's worth seeking out.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Study
I would recommend this study for a Christian of any level. In the western world, names are not as significant as they are in the middle eastern culture. Consequently, names don't mean as much to us as they possibly should.

This study takes you through, not only the names that God has been given by Himself and others, but WHY those particular names are used. Kay Arthur's books do not just tell you why, she has questions that are designed for you to go and learn for yourself. This is a great study method for both individual and group study. This way the knowledge actually becomes part of you. For the beginning Christian, this study helps you to learn more of God, His faithfulness, His characteristics, and such. This makes your personal relationship with Him all the richer. This also holds true for the more mature Christian. This is a study that does take some time, thought, research, and reading. But the most important part of this study (and any study that a Christian does) is prayer. Then you are inviting God to make Himself better known to you.

This study does take a commitment of time and energy. If you are looking for a study that makes you dig into your Bible in a deeper manner, get this one. You will be richly rewarded for the effort that you put into it. By the time that you are prayerfully done, God will be even more personal to you. Christ's words of John 15:15, "...I call you friends." will be even more of a reality of your life with Him.

5-0 out of 5 stars to know Him is to love him
This book helped me to come to know God more intimately. Such an intense study of the character, nature and attributes of God...that help those who want to know God up close and personal. Kay Arthur gave us the means to know that God is more than just a name, but His omnipotence is real, His omnipresence beyong what can be fathomed. In the Old Testament His people called on Him by His many names and it helped to understand how God is there in every aspect and every detail of our lives. This study was well written and delivers one into an arena that leaves you wanting to know more about the One True God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will greatly enhance your understanding of God...
Studying what God says about Himself, based on the names He uses for Himself in the Bible, is not only very enlightening, but also really helps you to know that you are not putting your faith in an abstract God, but in a multi-dimensional God of great power and love, who is completely worthy of our love and devotion and is fully capable of caring for those He created, us. ... Rising divorce rates inspired Dr. James Dobson, founder and president ofFocus on the Family, and his wife, Shirley, to author a devotional for couplesin an attempt to strengthen the marriages of younger generations. NightLight: A Devotional for Couples contains six months of daily devotionsstemming from the Dobsons' 40 years of marriage experience. Beginning on Sunday,an inspirational story addresses a relevant theme, such as communication, money, forgiveness, or conflict resolution, which is expounded upon throughout thedevotions for that week. Scripture, probing questions, and short anecdotesencourage intimacy between the couple in an attempt to ward off stagnation andhabitual laziness in spiritual growth. While the questions and suggestions willaffect every couple differently, this devotional stimulates conversation aboutweighty issues of the heart and turns the head toward what matters for eternity.Knowing that most couples are too exhausted by the end of the day to analyzeevery facet of their marriage, however, the Dobson's have crafted the devotionsto be completed within 10 minutes. One would expect this to be most helpful fornewlyweds, but it is a revitalizing aide for those who have had poorcommunication throughout their marriage or are looking to refocus their marriageon Christ. Night Light is a wonderful way to set your mind on the Lordbefore turning out the light and for drawing closer to your mate in the process.--Jill Heatherly ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for new or troubled couples
I bought this book for my friend who is about to get married. This devotional has a lot of value for new couples. What I like the fact that it covers a lot of topics, short, and straight to the point. It will help couples open discussion started in this book. I think this book is great for newlyweds.

This book covers topics such as true love, husbands role, wife's role, the gift of sex, how trust happens, money, forgiveness, encouragement, divorce, seeing with Gods eyes, and many more.

In conclusion I think this book is great for couples about to get married, newlyweds, or married in trouble marriage. After all, marriage is the highest step of maturity, and it shouldn't be taken lightly!

4-0 out of 5 stars Night Light:A Devotional for Couples
This book is just what the couple on the go needs. I never would have believed that my husband would actually enjoy reading with me, but this book includes something for the husband and the wife. It takes less than 10 minutes each night and it makes a lasting impression on each of you. It is based on the bible, but puts the ideas into ways that they may be implemented in daily life. We are in the early stages in the book and we can both tell a difference in our attitudes toward our marriage and our family. I can't wait to get further into the book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Every Christian Couple Should Read This
But they need to read it together. The beauty of this book isn't really the messages in the devotionals, it's the questions the book includes to ask yourself and your mate. The conversations this book inspired are worth every penny of the cost of the book, and the time it took to read it :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent devotional for couples
We both enjoyed this devotional book. It forced us to think about important issues and drew us closer to God and to each other. It is one of the best devotional books for couples we have found. I would definitely recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the Best Study Bible
I really love my Max Lucado Inspirational NKJV Study Bible. It's a wonderful study bible with many sidebars of life lessons of Lucado's teaching guides. This the only one I use because it helps me to have a better understanding of the Scriptures. Each Book of the Old and New Testaments are laid out in an instruction manual style. All chapters are boldly titled to explain the situation for each one. The Life Lessons examines more closely the situation, makes observations, gives inspiration, makes application and gives further explorations of other scriptures throughout the Bible. It's chalkful of footnotes of many reliable references. Throughout this study gem are more inspirational ancedotes from Grace, Forgiveness, Suffering and Victory to God's Love, Hope, Prayer and Faith. And many more worthwhile inspirations that will bless your life. Even more, it has one hundred greatest thoughts, an index to selected readings, a dictionary with topical concordance, acknowledgments from many great references from the most notable names in Christianity. There's even a place in the back to add your own notes. I'm sure this is the only study bible you'll ever use. I find it to be the most comprehensive, enriching masterpiece of the Holy Bible yet. I would definitely give this as a nice gift.

I love the Inspirational Study Bible, mine is NKJV. It has truly opened the word up to me as never before. I love reading and studying from it. It helps me understand a lot more of what was going on at the times the books were written. Mostly it helps me apply the Word to my own life. It has spoiled me, I have hunted several times for it in leather bound, I sure wish they would make it. I would get 1 for every member of my family.

Max Lucado is such a gifted writer. He is truly blessed by God. This bible made such a difference in my life when I needed it the most. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent explanation of the essence of Hinduism
Sri Eknath Eswaran's book has beautifully described the core meaning and essence of the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita. He has made it possible even for non-hindus and non-religious people to understand and answer the philosophical questions that haunt us, like why are we born on earth? what is each man's mission in life? how does the whole political and social system of the universe work? To me it has reinforced the faith and belief in the Supreme spirit that govers and rules this world and courage to stand for what I believe is Truth.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Lords Gita
This is a great accessable gita for all type of seekers. This translation is written in a very understandable form and flows very well.
It begins every chapter with a short analysis and detailed explanation of Sanskrit terms, spiritual principles and science behind them. It is also a nice size that makes for carrying it around with convenience.
This particular translation is will be appreciated by those open minded spiritual seekers since it is written as more of a spiritual guide than a religious text. Although religious types can also appreciate it.
The wisdom of the Gita is eternal and this one really does it justice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to live by
"A great book to live by" could be applied to 90% of Easwaran's work, but this was the first work of his that I was exposed to.. and it was one that had a profound effect.

Easwaran has taken an ancient tale and translated it into more than just English; Rather, he's translated into our daily lives. For those who find religious traditions other than their own to be too foreign, this edition of the Gita, with commentary, opens up the tradition of Krishna to the West.

This particular translation, however, doesn't focus heavily on Krishna, Arjuna, or the traditions of Hinduism. Instead, it paints a picture of a human being, like any of us, in a moral dilemna. Few of us have an advisor like Krishna to call upon, but we do have Easwaran.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gracious and precious description of the human condition
This review is being written by one whose life has been deeply moved by Christ Jesus, but who knows only little about yoga or other religions.

Eknath Easwaran has succeeded in capturing the essence of life the Bhagavad Gita embraces and continues on to describe who we really are and where our strength lies.
The revelation that we are strangers and aliens in the world, that we are (in the deepest sense) not mortal human beings but eternal spiritual beings and belong to and are one with Him and one another can come only to Arjuna from Krishna.
The reliance on and obedience to this inner voice is Action.
There are many paths, but only one journey.
This is one of the most beautiful descriptions of Jesus Christ I have ever read.
If you live in the world, you would do well to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, clear, and enlightening translation
Eknath Easwaran's translation is poetic and beautiful making it readable and inspiring and managing at the same time to clearly state Krishna' spiritual message. Easwaran's translation manages to prove its merit for both spiritual and scholarly study. Many of the other translations are very dry coming from scholars who just know how to translate Sanskrit to English mechanically.Whereas Easwaran was a professor of English and now a spiritual guru; so he has a grasp on both worlds. They do not properly help explain the various yogas Krishna tells Arjuna; reading this translation has been the best explanation of yoga I have ever read before. Each chapter has an introduction to it and there is a glossary of terms in the back. The other translations I think fail also to understand and clearly explain the heart of Krishnia's message which is essentially that one's atman, soul, higher self etc. is one with brahman, the divine, the universe, the source of everything etc and that this liberation can be discovered through the path of yoga. There is not just one path of yoga but many like Karma Yoga(path of selfless service) and Raja Yoga(path of meditation.) The beauty of the Bhagavad Gita is that it explains a way to enter the path to liberation, no matter what stage of spiritual awareness you are it. The Bhagavad Gita manages to explain and apply esoteric and mystical practices to ones everyday life. This is why I think The Bhagavad Gita is the most popular text from India's spiritual texts. Also according to our karma and dharma, we will die and be born again and again until he are liberated. The Bhagavad Gita is a text that I believe should be read by anyone on the "spiritual" path. It is by far one of the greatest "spiritual" text ever written and we are fortunate to share this gift because of Easwaran's brilliant translation. ... Read more

This book features 366 essays penned from a woman's perspective. Sample topics include gratitude, harmony, self-nurturing, positive body image, the importance of scented linen closets, and many others. Each essay sports a pithy quote from (surprise!) the likes of Kahlil Gibran. Viewed uncritically, it's hard to argue with Simple Abundance's earnest admonitions to appreciate life, in all its messy imperfect excellence. And the fact that serenity and happiness are each in dreadfully short supply can excuse some of the treacly writing. But Breathnach sometimes lapses into what can only be described as her "Martha Stewart on Prozac" voice, and the results are aggravating to the extreme: "If you've been hesitant to strike up a reciprocal relationship with your guardian angel, don't be." Fans of guardian angels will greet these feel-good essays every morning with the rising sun, a cup of mint tea, and a bluebird chirping on the windowsill, and be happy. Skeptics will prefer their coffee very black. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Daily Dose of Happiness and Insight
This book is a must! It has and is helping me through my soul searching. Ms. Breathnach talks about the common sense in a women's life. It's so simple that you yourself are sometimes blind to the simple pleasures. It's straightforward and enjoyable to read. I sometimes find myself reading a day ahead. I feel it's a big step towards being a better woman/human. She helps you find peace within you. I consider myself a good Christian & this book does not dismiss Christianity. The mix of Christianity and this book have made me more spiritual. I've given this book many times as a gift. I strongly recommend this book to any woman that feels she's missing something in her life.

5-0 out of 5 stars I enjoy habitually expressing my authentic self. Thanks!!!
I am in the process of reading this book. It caught my attention on the Oprah Show, several months ago, so I waited to buy it, to make sure that I wasn't buying on impulse.

This is a great book. As someone who is going through a job change, moving, and breaking free from a shame-based, hateful family, I am reading this book, and experiencing a serenity, through doing things, everyday, simple things, that don't cost much, that add value to my spirit.

I am so excited, everyday to get up and read the day's lessonns, and to discover new joys in my heart.

Others around me are catching on to my authentic self shining through.

I am looking at this book, from this point as something that is helping me to bring out things in me, habits that enhance who I am, that I had given up on, prior to this book.

Thank you so much, Sarah Ban Breathnach.

I look forward to my journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars still solid
Altho the author has exhibited "flaky" behaviour lately, this book remains a daily companion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding one self and fulfilling a dream
After being in an abusive relationship for ten years, I had feelings of hopelessness. I had no positive outlook about anything and the thought of a 'future' was slim to none in my eyes. I have always wanted to be a writer, but the misery that I was living in kept me from having a clear mind and my thoughts were jumbled and disoriented. In 1997, my parents bought me Simple Abundance. I read it, reread it, and read it again. I followed Sarah's suggestions and participated in all that she suggested with the wonderful inspiring activites she offered in the book. My book was published in May 2003! I have a wonderful marriage with my 'new' husband and am living my life as it is suppose to be. I am living the life God intended me to live. Thanks to Sarah Banbreathnach for sharing her insights and taking the time to write such a wonderful book that has changed a lot of lives for the better.

4-0 out of 5 stars For those with Clutter
I was recommended this book by a therapist. Because of this book, I now live a life of non-clutter. It's amazing how clutter can make you feel miserable, and you don't even know it!

If you're the type of person who has so much "stuff", and would feel incredibly guilty discarding this sutff, you will learn the three questions to ask yourself as whether to keep this item or not--without feeling guilty.

This book also helps you understand how the simplist things in life can make you feel so good.

You'll be glad you read this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a gem!
the old print takes some getting used to, but the side notes are invaluable! This is the one Bible I turn to most!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Bible; awful preface
This is a well made and readable reprint of the 1599 edition of the Geneva Bible. Instead of the 1560 commentary on Revelation, it has the rather vehement and anti-Catholic, but historically interesting. commentary of Junius on that book. The Apocrypha are listed on the table of contents, but were apparently not reproduced, either in the facsimile or in the edition this is copied from.

This Bible would be interesting and useful to people interested in the history of Protestant thought in England, and students of the literature of the period.

The edition is flawed, though, by the [...] prefaces added by the publisher. They seem to have little to do with this edition of the Bible or its historical significance. Indeed, they seem to misconstrue the doctrine of Grace that is expounded in the pages of the Bible itself. They are instead filled with amateur lawyering, bizarre political commentary, paranoid conspiracy theories, and attacks on the Authorized Version based on the character of King James [who, of course, didn't write it]. The prefaces are so disturbing that you may have qualms about supporting the operation responsible for this reprint.
Great Bible. Lousy introduction. -- This review refers to a previous edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fair copy of the original
This is a good photocopy of the 1599 Geneva bible. The type style and spelling are original to the period which makes reading this version difficult for the average student. However, the margin notes are excellent and are vital to understanding reformed theology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The First Bible I REALLY Read
I love this Bible and a year later am still very excited with it. It's easy to read, and even includes in the beginning of each book/chapter HOW you should read that particular book with things to look for. People you'll meet in reading that book are introduced and you're given references for where to find more about them. There are lots of little features where a verse will be disected and explained and many extra stories that give you the interesting details behind some of the Biblical characters. It's a million times easier to understand than a KJV. This is the first Bible I've been able to sit down and read and don't want to put it down. It's just much easier to understand. If you have had a hard time reading the Bible, try this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for teens and adults
My wife and I bought this for our teenage son last year. It has quickly become the family bible. Im buying one for my wife this year for Christmas. At the start of each book it gives a brief history and gives suggestions on how to get the most of the reading. I would recomend this bible for teens and adults

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners!
As an adult who has never read the entire Bible or spent much time in Bible study, I was looking for something that would help guide me through the Bible. This Bible was my answer! It has wonderful features that help you understand what you are reading and why it is important. Each book has an introduction that helps define the overall focus of the particular book and gives ways that help you relate the chapter/book to your personal life as a Christian.
If you are just beginning your study of the Bible this is a must have! You will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Bible for teenagers and adults new to Bible study.
This is the best study Bible for young people we have been able to locate. The NRSV translation is easy to read and is accurate to the original text. I highly recommend this Bible to anyone working with teenagers or for anyone new to Bible study. p.s. A previous review says this Bible is out of print. That is not correct.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best edition to use for teaching children.
This is the very best edition of the Bible to use for teaching children and young people. It has a very helpful format, excellent notes and well-done summary sections. Unfortunately, Zondervan is not going to continue to publish this version of the Bible. If you do not have a copy of this translation/edition yet, get one soon before they are gone. There is no way any publishing house can do better than this! It is a first class edition and will be a loss to those who teach Bible when it is gone. ... Read more

Book Description

Two years before he died, St. Thomas Aquinas - probably the greatest teacher the Church has ever known - was asked by his assistant, Brother Reginald, to write a simple summary of the Faith of the Catholic Church for those who lacked the time or the stamina to tackle his massive Summa Theologica.

In response, the great saint quickly set down - in language that non-scholars can understand - his peerless insights into the major topics of theology: the Trinity, Divine Providence, the Incarnation of Christ, the Last Judgment, and much more.

Here, then, is not only St. Thomas's concise statement of the key elements of his thought, but a handy reference source for the essential truths of the Catholic Faith. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK !!!
A great book ! A great explanation of the Faith.
I recommend to any person that wants more and more of God.

Highly recommended ! Solid great book by St. Thomas Aquinas.

Who can refute truth ?

5-0 out of 5 stars Aquinas summs up his Summa
I am an admirer of Thomas Aquinas, even though I am not Roman Catholic. He is powerful enough to cross the denominational bridges, and that is quite a compliment! This book is the Angelic Doctor's last written work. In fact, he died in the midst of writing the book, so it is incomplete, which is our loss. A mind like his comes once in a Millennium, so we are all worse off to not have more of his writings.

This book was intended to be a literal "hand book," a one -volume summation of Aquinas' rather bulky Summa Theologica. It follows a deceptively simple format of three parts: Faith, Hope, and Charity. At first blush, this seems to roughly correspond to II-II of the Summa. However, Aquinas restated his arguments for God's existence, and covers in a nutshell the main points of the entire I-I and I-II of the Summa.

It is a rare thing to find someone who can sum up a complex idea, or a string of complex ideas and concepts, but "The Dumb Ox" characteristically pulls it off. I wish more public speakers and politicians could develop this talent, since we get off on so many intellectual rabbit trails, and miss the great Yellow Brick Road. He does have a point to what he says, and he does stick on topic. Hence, his enduring power.

The translation is an easy read, and nothing really spectacular jumps out pro or con. As is stated in the introduction, this translation was to be a crutch, and the true student is encouraged to go to the original Latin for any hair-splitting nuances and so forth. The standard numeration is followed, so we can easily compare the translations. I hate translators/publishers who play God and reinvent the wheel in these matters.

I feel that this book should be used in conjunction with Kreeft's "Summa of the Summa." They are about the same size, but each book has its strengths and weaknesses. "The Shorter Summa" has the benefit of being Aquinas speaking for himself, and him telling you what he thinks is important, with the only disadvantage being that it is incomplete. The "Summa of the Summa" has the benefit of Kreeft's commentary and illustrations, and is (mostly) a good summery of Thomism, but it is Kreeft's-and I say this will an infinity of charity and respect for a great man-"spin" on Aquinas. So my advice is to split the difference and to get both books.

The only real objection I have is that the picture of Aquinas is rather unusual. He looks like one of the extra-terrestrial "Greys" that Art Bell talks about. Aquinas is a genius, and a human computer, but he isn't a Vulcan, and he never made a crop circle. G. K. Chesterton speaks of a portrait of Aquinas with piercing eyes. The only clue we have is the starburst design, but it would be nice for a Chesterton scholar to try and track down this portrait, and start using it. Or at least stick with the traditional Medieval sketch that graces the covers of most of the current Aquinas Anthologies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Intro to Thomism
In my opinion, there is no better introduction to the writing and thought of Thomas Aquinas than this book. The translation is excellent. This book covers many of The Angelic Doctor's primary theological and philosophical tenents in shorter, more comprehensive language than in the Summa Theologica. As with the Summa, the pity is that the work was left incomplete at the saint's death. This work will give the beginning Thomist an invaluable preparation to exploring the Summa Contra Gentiles, and ultimately, the Summa Theologica. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another in a great series...
After putting my wife off for several months to read 'Left Behind,' I have quickly raced through the first four books in the series, ending recently with Soul Harvest.

This book matches the intensity and excitment of the prior three installments, using the environment outlined in the Book of Revelations to tell the continuing story of Rayford Steele, Buck Williams and the rest of the Tribulation Force.

Without giving anything away, this installment has enough twists and turns to keep the reader interested from start to finish. Oddly, being a Christian and knowing where all of this is going, does nothing to dull the excitement of following the story as it develops.

The vivid writing of Lahaye and Jenkins makes it possible to visually put yourself into the scene and almost experience the subject matter firsthand.

If you are a believer and have not read any of these books, you are not doing yourself justice. These are great writings and do a great job of bringing the Word of God to life in a new and vibrant manner.

2-0 out of 5 stars A failure
I am an ardent believer in Christ, but that does not mean that anything written about Christianity should be endorsed and embraced regardless of its quality. I have read all 12 of these novels and they simply aren't very good. The writing is poor, the plot unimaginative, and there certainly isn't anything in these books that will cause a Christian to re-examine and thus more fully embrace our beliefs. Look, I don't doubt that the authors had the best intentions with these books, but quality has to count for something. There are better alternatives out there. Try We All Fall Down by Caldwell. It's well-written and extreimly intelligent. If you're going to read about Christianity, read something that is worth your time.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd best book
this is a fablous book and it teaches what might happen some day. so read it . it is a grat book and the way it is writen is by 2 authors and each writes a part for each caharactor and it is really neat, even to the detail and the dialog of the story is great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Earthquake survivors seek to destroy the Antichrist.
Having written the stunning article "The Wrath of the Lamb" in the previous book, Antichrist Nicolae Carpathia suspects that Buck Williams is a Christian. Buck searches for Chloe while Rayford Steel tries to locate his new bride Amanda. Lahaye and Jenkins show the emotional chaos and worldwide destruction through excellent descriptions.

This book begins during the 21st month (halfway through) Nicolae Carpathia's reign. We see the fulfillment of more prophecies as we travel to Iraq, Israel, America, and other world communities. Life is now comprised of living in underground shelters, evangelism through direct contact and web sites, finding enough to eat, clean water to drink, and other Christians with whom to work.

As prophesized, Nicolae knows that his time to rule the world is half-over. His hunger to devour the souls of those still on earth is his driving force. The general populace still sees him as a benevolent ruler, but we see behind the scenes where murder and anger rule the man-the Antichrist.

Lahaye and Jenkins show more character development than in previous books and the action is fast paced and demanding. Some familiar characters are dead, but new ones take prominence in The Tribulation Force.

By this point in the series, I was completely hooked. I had a hard time putting the book down, especially since I knew I had seven more on the bookshelf. As soon as I finished this book, I grabbed the next one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Responce to Literature
I'm reading The Left Behind Series. The book I'm on now is book four Soul Harvest. The main characters in this book are Chloe, Buck, Ken, Rayford, Mac, Tsion Ben Judah, Amanda, Hattie, and Loretta. This book takes place after the Rapture of God. They are trying to get as many people as possible to find Christ before the Glorious Appearing of God. At the beginning of the book Rayford and Buck are trying to find their family. They can't find Chloe, Amanda, Tsion, or Loretta. Loretta and Amanda both die. Buck finally finds Tsion, and later he finds Chloe with the help of Ken and Tsion. They get a call from Hattie, a non-believer, saying she is trying to get to them. They go to find her and find out that she is going to be kidnapped by Carpathia. They rescue her before he finds her. At the end of the book the next judgment comes. It is hail stones and balls of fire that come from the heavens. These books always are very good. They show you how much God loves you and it makes you feel good.

One thing I didn't like about this book was that they made Amanda and Loretta die. Amanda died in a plane crash during the earthquake. Loretta had been leaving the church and her car flipped over on top of her. They were both one of my favorite people in this book. The worst part is that now they are making Amanda a possible bad person. They are saying she was a spy working for the Antichrist, Carpathia. Rayford and Mac find the airplane and get Amanda's laptop. The plane had landed in a river though so the computer is water-logged. They have another believer who is also a computer wiz try to find any information. They find some that may connect her to Carpathia. "The lists of encrypted files from Amanda's hard drive are evidence extensive correspondence between her and Nicolae Carpathia," (LaHaye, 422).

My favorite part of this book was when Buck and Den dressed up as doctors. They were trying to get Chloe out of the hospital because Nicolae was trying to take her away. Ken was called Dr. Airplane because he is a pilot. "Excuse us Doctor, ah-'and Chloe says,' "Doctor Airplane"' I had to bite my tongue," (LaHaye, 265). It was funny because they made up a disease. They were trying to sound like they knew what they were talking about, but really they had no clue!

One thing I wonder abut is Hattie. A girl in the book is pregnant with the Antichrist child, or Nicolae child. I wonder if she will keep it or not. Also she is very sick and hasn't came to Christ yet. Will she die and if she does will she become a believer in time? "She sleeps too much," Chloe said. "And she is so pale," (LaHaye, 407).

This book is really about telling people that Gods loves you. The authors don't want anyone to live through this period of time. It is very devastating and dangerous. They want everyone to have the chance to accept Jesus as their Savior, so when the rapture does come you will go to heaven. I like this book and it has made me realize how important it really is to have a relationship with God. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great before an interview!!!!
I purchased and read this book a couple of years ago, only a few days before interviewing for a promotion at work. It caught my attention from the beginning and I couldn't put it down. During the interviewing process I answered many of the questions from info. that I had read out of (Becoming a Person of Influence.) I feel it was a major part of my getting the promotion. There were two others being interviewed that already had titles above mine and later ended up working for me. I have since purchased a number of copies of this book. I give one out to every new employee I hire, in which I'm putting in a supervisory role. It is an inspirational book along with educatinal. I would recommend it to anyone in a leadership role, work or otherwise. It is also a good rescource to go back & review now and then. It helps you stay on track as a supervisor or manager in business.

5-0 out of 5 stars Influence of Leaders
This book was incredible and very insightful. It was written by two of today's premier leaders: John Maxwell, world renouned minister, and Jim Dornan, international business leader. These two authors not only provide an excellent model for bringing out the best in people around you and people that you hold dear to you in your life, but they also provide the individual reader with a great way for them to improve their life. They stress many principles that can not only help you influence people in a positive way, but also help you as a person to become a better citizen. If you would apply these basic principles to your every day life, you could not only improve your professional life, but your personal life as well. Both of the authors have been very successful in their professional lives, as well as their personal lives. They have chosen to share the knowledge they have acquired over the years of their successful careers with us, the readers. They have done a great job conveying their message to the readers. I would highly recommend purchasing this book because it lays out an excellent model for anyone who is looking to get an edge in the business world of today. It would also be a great book for anyone who is just starting a business and is learning how to manage their employees for the first time. 5-0 out of 5 stars Another Maxwell masterpiece!
How will you impact the lives of others?

For anyone who works with groups of people (and especially youth) you will find this book to be a great addition to your library. I especially enjoyed the worksheets at the end of each chapter as they were tangible ways of putting theory into practice.

This book is very easy to read, but as with most good books in this category, take notes or be willing to re-read chapters as there is almost too much good information. Most books offer nuggets--this one is a serious gold rush.

The leadership team I work with spent two weeks on Chapter 3 (A person of influence has Faith in People). I thought this was one of the best chapters in any of Maxwell's books and this will become a permanent part of our leadership program.

A great gift for graduating college students or folks newly elected to positions of leadership.

2-0 out of 5 stars Look for his other books, don't buy this one
Please consider my suggestion before you decide to buy this book.
I recommend you consider buying his other two books instead of this one.
"The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership"
"The 21 Most Powerful Minutes In A Leader's Day"

|-POSITIVE-|
I can't say anything positive about this book, I was shocked to see this author repeat same information written in other Maxwell books.

|-NEGATIVE-|
I read 5 of his books on leadership, and they all share very similar information. If you read his other books, you will not find any new ideas here. This book badly repeats what's in his other books, and its written by some guy Jim. The writing style of his other books are much better as well. I advice that you don't buy it, just look into his other books I mentioned above.

4-0 out of 5 stars Irresistibe Approach!
Maxwell's Book is a no doubt a unique approach towards creating an irresistible personality empowering impact on others through Influence. The author offers ready reckoner tips with simple ways to influence others through positive interaction and attitude to boost up the image. Worksheets at the end of the book are great insights to put theory into practice. It sure has leadership tactics of nurturing others and having faith in people who are on the roll. Understanding is the key towards healthy relations and developing leaders. Listenening method has a proven effect of influencing others. The author suggests serving sub-ordinates and impressing them with influence to get the better results and become a person of integrity. Influencing is an art and no wonder, this comes with a positive attitude and a positive approach, anyways. A good pick. ... Read more

Book Description

As elegant as his bestselling How to Know God and as practical as his phenomenal The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, this groundbreaking new book from Deepak Chopra contains a dramatic premise: Not only are everyday coincidences meaningful, they actually provide us with glimpses of the field of infinite possibilities that lies at the heart of all things. By gaining access to this wellspring of creation, we can literally rewrite our destinies in any way we wish.

From this realm of pure potential we are connected to everything that exists and everything that is yet to come. “Coincidences” can then be recognized as containing precious clues about particular facets of our lives that require our attention. As you become more aware of coincidences and their meanings, you begin to connect more and more with the underlying field of infinite possibilities. This is when the magic begins. This is when you achieve the spontaneous fulfillment of desire.

At a time when world events may leave us feeling especially insignificant and vulnerable, Deepak Chopra restores our awareness of the awesome powers within us. And through specific principles and exercises he provides the tools with which to create the magnificent, miraculous life that is our birthright.

2-0 out of 5 stars Try Another Book - This One is Flat
I agree (now) with the editorial review, but I had to see for myself, since I am a Chopra fan. Editor said "Although Chopra's theories are expressed in a confusing and repetitive manner, the techniques he advocates may prove interesting to those who enjoy his humanistic, if convoluted, approach to self-help." Yep.

There are better books on the market, including one I just finished from a NDE survivor who educates without the confusion, and theres two chapters on technique that humans can understand! Psychic Gifts in the Christian life by Tiffany Snow. Other books you should look at is the (not kidding) "Idiot" series, which lay a good foundation for several disciplines, like "Meditation for Idiots" or "Psychic Awareness for Idiots," etc. The Power of Coincidence is a bit flat. You expect an author to generate a shift in consciousness, and excitment and method of beneficial change. This book didn't do it. I hope his next one is better. I see him on TV, etc, and I know he's getting better at marketing, but what about the writing? Maybe he's just too busy now for us regular people. Where is the old Chopra I knew? I want him back!

5-0 out of 5 stars ENLIGHTENING!
I purchased this and the "Celestine Prophecy" by James Redfield the same day. Great companions! The "Celestine" is a parable story of the stuff Deepok is speaking about. Each gives you a deeper understanding of the other. I purchased Deepok's on tape and listen to it in my car and the "Celestine" in bookform and therefore am studying both, slowly, together. This was not planned, but, may I say, a coincidence. These were the only two items I picked up in the bookstore that day, one audio and the other in bookform, perfect!

If you are concerned of Deepok's book being too dry, buy the "Celestine" first. If it sparks an interest, then go on to buy Deepok's for a deeper and more complete understanding of the why's, mechanics and science behind coincidences.

5-0 out of 5 stars A PERFECT fit ... for me.
No book is for everyone ... no book can reach every person in the infinite variety of lives we live. But THIS book was precisely what I was looking for when I found it. I've referred to it over and over and over again and it has proven to be of invaluable assistance to me as I've worked to change my life from the inside out.

As I first read the book, and was blown away by how perfectly it filled in the gaps in the picture of life that was forming within me, I also realized "this book isn't for everybody". Read the other reviews and follow your instincts. If it sounds like something that you've been searching for but haven't been able to find ... then I think you'll be delightfully pleased. If it sounds like smoke and mirrors to you, then look for something else. If you're in the mood for an apple, why eat an orange and blame the orange when you're done?

2-0 out of 5 stars I think it's flat too
Wayne Dyer is better(most of his books). Tiffany Snow is better (all of her books). Some of Chopra's earlier works are better. Many books are better than this, this one just repeats most of what we already know, so why bother?

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth reading
A worthy insight into probable meaning of daily happenings. It is absolutely fantastic. Dr. Chopra has done it again. It can change your thinking.........and your life. If you find the book flat (as an earlier reviewer did), all you need to do is actually read the book and you will find the treasure that it is. 5 stars all the way. ... Read more
