Book Description

The Urantia Book boldly claims to be a revelation of truth to our world from a friendly and well-ordered universe.A revelation, in book form, intended to help guide humankind into a new era of evolutionary progress. It provides a deeper appreciation and understanding of our own planetary family while disclosing our place in the great cosmic family of freewill intelligent beings. It reveals as never before an infinite circle of creation, at the center of which reigns a beneficent and loving creator.

First published in 1955, The Urantia Book is a literary masterpiece that harmonizes science, religion, and philosophy, while illuminating the origin, history and destiny of mankind. The last third of the book contains the most sublimely beautiful account of Jesus' life and teachings ever told. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Urantia Book Ever
This edition of The Urantia Book is the best ever! For the first time the book includes a complete index!!! It's an indispensable resource for a book of this size and complexity. It also contains a universal referencing system that allows for greater ease of study. Whether you currently read The Urantia Book or are just looking into it for the first time, this edition is the one to buy because it allows you to explore the book topically.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Very Useful
This book is the pits. The text is in two columns on each page and has an extemely annoying numbering system that just gets in the way and screws up your concentration, and gives it a cult/bible look and feel. They say two columns on each page was "TESTED" but I think the persons evaluating it said it was "COOL" just because it is different, not better. After reading it a while you'd swear you were playing a video game from the constant eye motion, 4x more than normal. The worst thing about this Uversa text is the lame picture of Christ on the cover. In the 19th century it was a good painting but today anyone would think Christ is presented as looking kind of odd. I am no fan of the competion, The Urantia Foundation, but their book is better for practical reading and can live with their well known editing "woes".

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Index
An earlier reviewer referred to the text as "God given," and I agree. One feels gifted by God in the reading of this book, something I can still say after 30 years of making this cherished text my companion. Many who are spiritually alive (or seeking to be so) will find their inner "truth resonators" vibrating soundly when they read this text, no matter which edition they read. A beautiful quality of this book is that no one needs to "tell" you if it is true or not. You will recognize its truth on a soul level, or not.

The same reviewer, however, referred to this text as "stolen" from the Foundation, the group which performed the valuable task of putting these revelatory pages into book form. With this, I disagree. Foundation members sought a copyright on this text, but their efforts legally failed. Many (who were equally sincere) disagreed with the Foundation's methods of distribution, and were relieved by the suit outcome so that distribution could be managed more freely, including the creation of translations.

The fact is that this text was given to all of humanity for the benefit of all of humanity. It is a text which has the potential to change lives, and even nations, if sincerely applied. Book distribution by both publishers is a sincere act of service toward all those who have "eyes to see and ears to hear" what these pages have to offer. A unique aspect of these two publishers is that no one is looking to earn profit from making these books available. As non-profits, they are run by those who wish to be of service to all, and therefore any proceeds are funneled back into making the book widely available. It is exciting that people from many nations are now clamoring for translations of the book into their own languages.

Serious students of the book will find that the index included with this version is invaluable. This is the first time that the index and the text have expediently appeared in one volume. Furthermore, this index is more versatile in its cross-referencing than any earlier indexes which had been published separately. Curious browsers will likewise appreciate that the index allows topics of particular interest to be quickly located. All in all, this publication is more user friendly than prior editions.

However, the particular edition is not nearly as important as the content, which is the same in all editions. As a general resource, this text uplifts the paths of religionists from many perspectives. Its contents are not designed to promote or start a new religion, but rather are intended to support one's search for a life of transcendent meaning (including a personal connection to our Creator). No matter which edition is preferred, this profound book needs to be discovered (and likely will be) by those who are hungry for spiritual liberation

5-0 out of 5 stars New Features
As a long time student of the Urantia papers, this new edition published by Uversa Press is a welcome addition. Both publishers (The Foundation and The Uversa Press) have maintained the highest standards possible in remaining true to the original text. The only significant difference between these publications is in the formatting and referencing. This new edition by The Uversa Press is printed with two columns for easier reading. More importantly, this edition includes the long awaited and much needed INDEX to the Urantia papers. Now readers can easily search the papers by Word, Name or Topic. In addition, the text is now numbered by Chapter, Section and Paragraph for faster referencing. And for scholars, an Appendix has been included citing word or punctuation modification from the original 1955 text to this new edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars The URANTIA Book is a breathtakingly replete religious work.
The URANTIA Book published by URANTIA Foundation is the most consistent and inspiring book on religion I have found in over four decades of searching. The effect on the reader is to increase one's certainty about God. For me, Part III on the "History of Urantia" which is the book's name for our planet was most persuasive. It speaks about things we can see in the world and discusses their causes. The effect is breathtaking. Part IV on the life of Jesus then shows how spiritual values are able to be actually lived as they were two thousand years ago in the life of Jesus. There is a wide range of topics covered such as astronomy, marriage, geography, the equality of women, and government, to name a few. The URANTIA Book is a work so replete that it may be read in a matter of months, but additional readings result in added understandings. For those who like religion to be spoon-fed, The URANTIA Book may not be for them. But for those who hunger to know God better, want to know God as a living reality, and translate this love into lives of practical service filled with truth, beauty, and goodness, this book is a roadmap for living spiritually and joyfully in this world

5-0 out of 5 stars On the journey in quest of spiritual freedom, a must read.
Buddha's son once said after trying to comprehend his father's teaching of the freedom of salvation through faith, "Work out your own salvation." and be your own teacher, "It's not TRUTH until its YOUR TRUTH." The Urantia Book is not for everybody, just yet. It should be read as a personal, subjective document of immense importance for the sincere truth seeker. The continuity of content, harmony of values and beauty of insight profoundly impressed me. If you have discovered the Urantia Book, you must seriously consider that you are NOW ready for an expansion of your cosmic understandings, an enlargement of your spiritual values, and an acceptance of greater peace. DON'T RESIST. By its own admission, the Urantia Book does not have all the answers. Truth is always dependent on cultural context in time and space. However, if you are looking for relative answers to fill in the gaps of information in such topics as: "The life, times and teachings of Jesus", or the cultural connection between humans and angels, or the eternal connection between the human spirit and the eternal spirit, or maybe the physical connections of ETs and terrestials here on Urantia or in our local cosmic neighborhood. You will be pleased with the revealed information in the Urantia Book. How about possible answers to the "Crop Circle " phenomenon, or the mythology behind the "fall of man" or the apocalypse? You may derive answers from the Urantia Book. The Urantia Book states, "It's not so much what you learn or do here in this Earth life but rather that you have the experience. This is paramount." Regardless of our origin of race, cultural beliefs or family background, and no matter how much material wealth, health or happiness we achieve, the overwhelming message for me in the Urantia Book during these past 25 years has been: "Its not that you win or loose but HOW YOU PLAY THE GAME," or "It's not how many times you fall down BUT how many times you get ! up that matters in this life experience." The greatest realization for me from the Urantia Book was that we are all just starting out on our own eternal adventure of achieving ever expanding and increasing levels of: comprehending wisdom; experiencing universal truths; realizing greater cosmic insights; and living expanded spiritual values in a nearly endless progression of advancing lives. Perfection is our destiny, service is our goal, and Love is our reward. Happy journey, see you on the path. -Robert Linnell

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing Book
By the time I was 16 I decided that God could not possibly exist. I became an atheist. After studing philosophy, I realized that God could neither be proved or disproved, so I became a reluctant agnostic. I turned to science for answers, but science can only describe "how" and not "why"; science does not and can not address the question of meaning.

Why is there something rather than nothing? Are we all just atoms in the void? I spent more than two decades seaching for some kind of answer. I read anything and everything..... so much that I sometimes felt that my brain simply could not absorb any more input. But I was utterly unable to take that leap of faith without feeling that I would somehow have to sacrifice my intelligence - a choice I could not and would not make.

On February 11, 1984 I was given a copy of The Urantia Book. A new revelation? Yeah, right. I flipped through it from time to time, but it was several years before I actually read it from cover to cover.

It changed my life. I subsequently read it many times and continue to read it on almost a daily basis. It the single most important book I have ever read. Period.

I suspect I would still be an unhappy agnostic if this book had not come my way. I know now that God does exist, that there is a purpose to the universe and a purpose to my life. And I know this with my heart and my mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Super critic relents
I first came into contact with the UB in 1974. After a few hours of reading, I said,"This is too good to be true!". After a few more hours, I said," If this is not true, it should be!" During all of my years since, I literally wore out my first UB- It fell to pieces. I have detected only one "fact" difficulty. This is the UB contention of 48 chromosomes instead of the widely held contention of 46. I have recently satisfied-to my mind- this seeming difficulty. I believe that the "missing" chromosomes are MORONTIAL, and therefore not detectable by any scientific method. These invisible chromosomes probably help form the sites in the physical reception areas for mind, personality, and the contact and lodgement of Thought Adjusters. I would welcome any comment on this theory. Thank You, Roger Fuller

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Theology Book
Urantia Book is a very advanced and solid religion book I ever found, theologically. Theology of a new cosmic religion, where we are all brothers and sisters, family of God under God as our Father.

I am a lecturer in a Christian theological school an I am active in discussion among different religions, and I can say that this is the book that can answer almost every question with very good logical explanation. Questions from secularists, from atheists, from agnostics, from moslems, from buddhists, from hindus, and especially from critical christians like myself.
As an active Christian inside moslems and buddhist country, I know very well about Christianity's dogma weaknesses, especially when stand in dialogue with other beliefs.

If we want to understand this book, please let us open and expand our point of view. This book contain so much information, arranged in a very systematic way. The easiest way to approach this book is to ask questions, and let the book answers. List several very difficult questions which nobody in this world can answer, and search the book. For example: where is the God if he exists? If God exist, why I cannot see him? which is true: evolution or creation? Is Jesus a human or God? Which is true: trinity (Christian), tauhid-monotheism (Islam), polytheism (Hindu), God is not exist and you can become God (Buddha), or I don't know ?

I approach this book using this practical way. Then I read throughout the book, crosschecking its teachings and information. Should this book fails to answer, or there is a single fatal contradiction or inconsistencies, then you may suspect this is not a revelation, or this is just a fiction.

We all know moslems are one point six billion people in this world, and they weren't and wouldn't accept Christianity because of several causes. They accept Jesus (as special prophet), but not Christianity. Urantia Book even explains the causes very well and true. I know it from bitter dialogue with moslems. ... Read more

Book Description

Are we children of God, or simply complex animals? Will we survive death, or are we doomed to extinction?

Is humankind an accident, or are we part of a grand universe plan?

The Urantia Papers give persuasive answers to these questions. Nearly 500,000 copies of The Urantia Book are now in print. But, who wrote it, and by what authority? More intriguing and thrilling than any science fiction or mystery story are the actual events that were set into motion in Chicago nearly 100 years ago and eventually resulted in one of the most astounding publications ever printed. However, until now, a carefully documented history of these Papers, explaining where they came from, how they became published as The Urantia Book, and exactly what happened to them after their 1955 publication has not been available. In A History of the Urantia Papers, Larry Mullins and Dr. Meredith Sprunger have collaborated to strip away prejudice and superstition and unfold the facts about the origin and history of the Urantia Papers. Whether you are familiar with the Urantia Papers or simply curious about them, you will find A History of the Urantia Papers a captivating and challenging story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive History of the Fifth Epochal Revelation
The Urantia Papers, published as "The Urantia Book," constitute an epochal revelation of spiritual truth to our beleaguered planet ("Urantia"). There is a mystery associated with the origin of the Papers, a mystery which has given rise to much controversy, confusion, and misinformation, both innocent and scurrilous. In "A History of the Urantia Papers," Larry Mullins, assisted by Dr. Meredith Sprunger, presents the most complete, thoroughly researched, well-documented, cogently-structured, and intelligently-argued account of the Urantia Papers and what people have done with them that we are likely to get in this world. This History is a must for students of The Urantia Book and a great service to Urantia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great secondary work
Mr. Mullins has finally provided the world with a much needed history of the Urantia Papers. His writing is clear and straightforward, but has enough personality and wit to make the history come alive with excitement. I was enabled to share the emotions of the early readers as they waited for the release of the book, and wondered at its future. The story of how Dr. Sadler was introduced to the one mystery he couldn't solve, and how he eventually became a full believer in the revelation, is a thrilling ride through human psychology and spirituality. Mr. Mullins has made a great contribution to my historical understanding of the greatest book in the world.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Disease Continues
This book and all others in the genre are cult orientated and promoting. The custodian of the Urantia Book, Dr. Sadler, did his best to avoid and prevent any historical documentation which would lead to the development of a human tainted record of the papers, and it was also the mandate for all orgainizations he founded. The Urantia Book was meant to stand on it own and speak for itself. If someone wants a 'history' of the book they can look at the authors in the book index, then simply read it. After many of the founding members died there was an upswell of vain-glorious groupies seeking self promotion. They and their work is not worth a bucket of warm spit.

1-0 out of 5 stars PREACHING TO THE CONVERTED
The front flap cover of A History of the Urantia Papers (AHOTUP) provides the following advertence to the reader: "With the publication of this new history, for the first time a serious reader can examine the complete, documented story of the Urantia Papers and weigh the credibility of the individuals who were somehow involved with the work's publication as a book." Unfortunately, AHOTUP does not live up to this claim. It falls woefully short of anything that could be considered an objective historic account, and is nothing more (or less) than the latest attempt at damage control by spinning the old yarn of how the mighty words of the alleged celestial revelators were made book (i.e., The Urantia Book), for those who want to hear it. AHOTUP first tips us off regarding its slanted approach in an endnote on page 57: "I developed the dialogue between the various individuals in the seminal contact with some artistic license. It . . . is a plausible dramatization that fits the known facts." Artistic license? Plausible dramatization? Are these disclaimers the cornerstones of objectivity, or are they the earmarks of subjectivity? And read how AHOTUP blatantly blows its cover by exposing its true purpose: "Future readers, whether we prefer it or not, may learn of the origins before they have the opportunity to ponder the message. We should strive to see that a reader has enough information to establish informed conclusions. We should also aspire to a quality of analytical thinking about such questions that is consistent with the philosophy of the Urantia Papers" (75). In other words, let's indoctrinate the novice readers before anybody else can get to them! AHOTUP reluctantly relies heavily on information provided by outcast Harold Sherman's How to Know What to Believe to give a first-hand account of the Forum days. (The only other available primary sources are scant reports provided by William Sadler, founder of the movement and self-ascribed "custodian" of the "revelation.") And yet, when convenient, information Sherman provides that might lead the reader to draw conclusions that are not in concert with the revelatory paradigm is virtually ignored. Despite the fact that Martin Gardner's was the first book-length treatise to provide heretofore unpublished information regarding the Urantia movement, said reference is given scant mention.... Your copy of the "inviolate" fifth epochal revelation, supposedly indited by celestial minds, has been revised by mere mortals who apparently took issue with the angelic authors! Or were those errors of human origin to begin with? Either way, it looks as though we have a conundrum on our hands, folks.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any student, or new reader of the Urantia Papers!
I first discovered the Urantia Book over 30 years ago while in New York. I was only 19 years old, and there was much mystery about both what the book was, and where it came from. Even though the mystery was there, I still read the book and if you'll pardon a much used cliché, "It changed my life."

After about four years of studying the book on my own, I contacted Christy in Chicago to hopefully, "solve the mystery." From there I began to meet and study with many Urantia Book students throughout the world. By stories I heard from many of the older readers, (many who were around when the "Papers" first starting coming), I was eventually able to get an idea of how the "Papers" came to be. Although there was still "some" mystery, most of the ridiculous rumors were dispelled.

Now, 30 years later, a group of highly respected, and scholarly students of the Urantia Papers, have lovingly put together the history for all to know. What a wonderful service they have provided future students and this planet! How I wish that this book, "A History of the Urantia Papers," had been available when I first found the book.

I highly recommend this book for all new readers, seasoned students and curious seekers. It's a fantastic piece of work! Thank you Larry Mullins, and Dr. Meredith Sprunger! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must-read guide to the Fifth Epochal Revelation.
This is an excellent reference tool for those who are first exploring the gigantic contents of this epochal book. Due to the extent of the contents of THE URANTIA BOOK, a guide like this is essential to prevent frustration and failure to locate and comprehend vital information. It also provides an invaluable concept coordination for new or seasoned readers. We owe the author a debt of gratitude for creating an accurate and helpful companion to the "Big Blue Book".

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read about the Urantia Book & your spiritual destiny.
This book is beautifully written. It captures the essence of the Urantia Book revelation and presents it in a "reader friendly" format which greatly increases the potential for spreading the word about the Urantia Book and it's message. I have initially ordered 10 copies for distribution to my family and friends and expect them to be so well received that I will soon be back for more. Thank you, David Bradley, for this loving service to your fellow humans. I believe that in writing this book you were truly "following God's will". ... Read more

Book Description

From the formation of the galaxies and earth itself, through the birth of Adam and Eve, to the present time of epochal change, The Fifth Revelation: Key Passages from The Urantia Book encapsulates millennia in three hundred fascinating pages. In 1971, when author Kelly Elstrott discovered The Urantia Book his life was changed forever. Almost thirty years later, as a successful chemical engineer, father of six children, including eight-year-old triplets, he compiled The Fifth Revelation in gratitude for the way The Urantia Book has guided and enriched his life. Seekers of spiritual truth and students of comparative religion will be familiar with The Urantia Book as an epic 2,000-page anthology first published in 1955 from papers indited by superhuman personalities in the 1930s.

Now The Fifth Revelation - so called because The Urantia Book was the fifth time the Word of God was given to the people of earth - offers readers an illuminating sneak preview of the uplifting life teachings recorded in the original text, as well as a stand-alone volume of spiritual strength and beauty. Illustrating the book are sixty black-and-white prints of the world's greatest art, including Mary Cassatt's The Bath in a chapter about family love. Elstrott's personality and sensibility further enliven the reading experience with introductions to each chapter and careful notations guiding the reader to the original text. The wise reader will turn early on to the series of appendices at the back of the book, including an excellent glossary and index.

From the beginning, the reader is drawn into a universe startlingly reminiscent of George Lucas' "Star Wars" with countless inhabited planets. The good guys of earthalso known as Urantiaforge their way to perfection through the path of love and beauty and integrity, while the bad guys, who have rejected God's plan of brotherhood, perennially try to sabotage the way back to God, unwittingly serving as testers of faith. Spiritual Oscar winners Melchizedek, Ikhnaton, Isaiah, and Jesus himself, known as the Creator Son, cheer every member of the human race as we step slowly and steadily toward freedom under the watchful eye of a benevolent God.

The Fifth Revelation is a perfect introduction to The Urantia Book, and will fill a long-overdue place on bookshelves of all spiritually committed inhabitants of this sector of the galaxy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The fifth revelation
I really enjoyed the book by Kelly Elstrott. I listened to Kelly on a talk show one night and his insights inspired me to read the book and I'm glad I did. The book is a nice primer for the Urantia Book and I plan on abtaining a copy asap. My definition of a good book is one that inspires thought, reflection and the thirst for more. The fifth revelation falls into this category nicely.

1-0 out of 5 stars More middlemen!
Haven't we humans suffered enough at the hands of middlemen, those who presume to stand between us and God. Those who want to explain things to us because we're too lazy, stupid, etc., to get it own our own. I don't need anyone to tell me what I can get from The Urantia Book, and neither should you. Are you going to have a personal religious experience with someone else's ideas about a book? I don't think so, and if you did, just think what the real thing would do for you. The Urantia Book presents so many new and challenging ideas and concepts and information about so many things, how are you going to judge its validity? The only way to be 100% convinced of ANYTHING is through a personal experience of it. Unless of course, your the kind of person not likely to believe in or to be committed to anything, in which case nothing much really matters at all, does it. Yes, the book is long. Get over it and get on with it. It's long because there's so much to tell. You never know where your own personal religious experience is going to come from. At least give yourself the experience of experiencing the real thing. Read The Urantia Book first. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Doorway to Cosmic Citizenship
If you truly seek, then you shall find. If you have your mind truly open, then God will provide.
JANR is an edition taken from the 4th section of the Urantia Book, a mind-blowing cosmic journey of faith and hope.
This book is suitable for those who have been intimidated by the wording and size of the Urantia Book. There have been many souls brought into the Light by starting with Part 4 and later reading other parts.
Not everyone will agree with me here. That is fine. But, those folks must realize that there are many paths to the same Source.
The Life and Teachings of Jesus represents the finest account of our Master ever recorded. Read it and you will never be the same again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Personally Transforming!
This book, the fourth part of the book called, The URANTIA Book,
stands on its own in linguistic merit, and epochal content. This restatement of the life and teachings of Jesus will appeal to ANY sincere truth-seeker. Safe in its presentation since it does not seek to solicit support for any dogmatic nor religious affiliation, in fact, it steepens your own personal convictions, this work has incredible mind and character enhancing ability, according to the personal willingness of the reader. Your own spirit of truthfulness will cause you to fall in love with the Jesus which is wonderfully and powerfully portrayed in this book, if that is your desire. This is the only book I have EVER read over and over and over! Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you know of a more inspiring book, please tell me of if!
Jesus: A New Revelation is the most amazing book I have ever read, and I consider myself an avid reader. I used to think all religious people needed some crutch to get through life, couldn't face reality and were just hooked into conventional traditions without much contimplation of alternatives. I had no faith before I read this book. Not that I was looking very hard, but I never found anything else in the vast sea of new age offerings, nor in the traditional scriptures to turn me away from the practical, scientific, intellectual, humanistic atheism I had evolved in my life. That is, until I read this book which tells the fascinating day to day story of Jesus' life and teaching.

This is a living story, wonderfully captivating, thrilling, and real. Jesus was born, raised, and died a Jew, but he gives hope, joy and inspiration to peoples of all faiths. Christians may have traditionalized him past the point of recognition...I dare say, this book may not even appeal to fundamentalist Christians who have no room in their hearts for growth. This is a book for people who are evolving (or discovering) their multi-facited faith...for whom faith is living.

Don't believe me, read it for yourself and decide for yourself. This is not a 5 star book, it is a 10 star book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Without Urantia?
I am an ardent supporter of The Urantia Book and love just about anything pertaining to this wonderful revelation! However, the book, "Jesus: A Rew Revelation" will make little sense to someone who is not already familiar with the concepts and vocabulary of The Urantia Book.

As a piece of the complete Urantia text, I must say that the "Jesus Papers" as they are so known by Urantia students, are simply wonderful! But standing alone without the complete revelation, this book may be a futile undertaking for some readers. At least the publishers could have done was publish a glossay of terms for the new reader!

I suggest passing this little mistake aside and delving into the complete and authorized text of The Urantia Book.

I give this book high marks because within it are words of truth, but I can't give the publication my full support.

5-0 out of 5 stars A message to mankind
As a radio astronomer I consider The Urantia Papers to be a genuine message to mankind from personalities of the Universe. This conviction has only become stronger over time as I have seen more and more facts from various fields of Human knowledge become confirmed by science. I have made research concerning a multitude of facts contained in the Papers since the 1960:ies. Nobody seems to be fully aware of the method by which these Papers originated in the 1930:ies, but there are different theories in existence. No human author has been found. Perhaps the following sentence from the Papers is significant:

"But revelation originates neither a science nor a religion; its function is to co-ordinate both science and religion with the truth of reality."

To those interested in a wider view I recommend the full revelation containing 2097 pages. The text is highly intellectual, well written and contains large amounts of information in matters of a fundamental nature. You might however need several years to penetrate and assimilate the contents.

4-0 out of 5 stars A gift to the world
I purchased the Urantia book over 30 years ago, I have also looked into many other spiritual books and related subjects and spent countless hours reading them, nothing can compare with the Urantia book, it is in a class all by it's self. If you have that desire to find God and understand what your purpose on Earth (Urantia) is then read the Urantia book, you'll understand more than you ever expected. I know this sounds over stated but in actuality it is an understatement.

This is the best Christmas gift I ever found.

Sincerely,

Donald L Christy

5-0 out of 5 stars A Personal and World Guide to Survival
The Urantia Book is quite simply the most amazing book on Earth. Its power to inspire love and brotherhood among people is and has been unequaled since it was possible to actually interact with Jesus of Nazareth 2000 years ago.

It is the complete synthesis of science, history, philosophy and religion that the world has long needed. It is the single most transformational event in my life of 63 years. It is the message that will begin the transformation of our planet into the place it was intended to be - a world dominated by love, peace, and brotherhood under the Fatherhood of God.

1-0 out of 5 stars More bureacracy under Heaven than you can shake a stick at
Buy this if you want something to flip open to at random for amusement and rare insights. Also, a wide number of the ideas contained therein were gleaned from '30s notions and various religions without reference, but (and you know it's a classic because) other small groups have since gleaned ideas (such as Thought Adjusters) from this book. So for some obscure reference possibilities, sure, maybe.

For a basis of belief, though? If the universe is actually as crammed packed with such a tediously granular and rigid bureaucracy and hierarchy as this book claims, I'll side with the Rebellion. No, wait, the Rebellion Urantia style was too boring (involving comminiques and diplomats and lengthy debates, all of which was somehow cause to disintegrate Lucifer, simply for expressing and discussing his opinion). I think I'll just go solo.

5-0 out of 5 stars All encompassing and complete
I found the Urantia Book a couple of years ago and have found it has changed me completely. It answers most questions about religion, sceince, philosophy and life on a backwards planet as viewed by a common mortal creature with little intellegence. Truly is faith inspiring and thought provoking. This book will eventually transform the world from an internal spirit leading truth, teach us how to live in peace, and show us the way to love our brother and sister mortals. Looking forward to an eventual era of light and life with the return of a universe ruler. Life on this planet can be changed by our individual actions as demonstrated by a true leader while among us. The life of this universe ruler while in the flesh has given us all an example to live by.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love of the Father and the brotherhood of man.
The most powerful spiritual writing to be currently found on our planet. Reading this book from cover to cover will impact your life beyond anything except living personal communion with God and the loving service of your fellow men. Study, enjoy it and use it to learn how to become closer to God and to love your brothers more on a daily basis. Inside these pages you will find insight into cosmic reality. The truth, beauty and goodness of the Fifth Epochal Revelation will in you create a living messenger of the love of God and our Creator-Master Son if you so will it to be. Not your will but the Father's will be done, ever so. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't deprive yourself of this message!
When I was first introduced to The Urantia Book a number of years ago, I was encouraged to look beyond the obstacle of authorship and judge the validity of it's message on it's content. The idea that the truth would "ring true" deep within my being was often expressed. I took this advice to heart, and as I immersed myself in it's pages, I was rewarded by a whole choir of bells ringing true within me. It pains me to think how many people out there are depriving themselves of this amazing message just because they can't deal with the possibility that the papers were authored by "superhuman beings". It really doesn't matter who wrote the papers at all, what matters is the message. I, for example, am writing this review. Very few people who read this actually know me, so the majority of you will have to ponder what I have written and take from it what you will. Why should any other message be any different?

That many people will choose not to read The Center Within because of the source of it's teachings pains me as well. Many of the same Urantians who will encourage those reading The Urantia Book to look at the message and not judge the book by it's authorship will do exactly the opposite to this book. And as with The Urantia Book, those who choose to ignore this book are depriving themselves of a beautiful, uplifting, and even practical message. I would encourage everyone, Urantian or not, to open themselves to this message. I know that you will not be dissappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing the Teachings of The Urantia Book to Life.
This is a wonderful addition to the Urantia Book. It gets down to the nitty-gritty of some of the teachings and adds practical advice to each of those teachings. You may not agree with all of its advice or with all of its explanations of the teachings, however, you will agree that it is a must have for anyone on a spiritual journey.

The Urantia Book is one of the most inspiring books in print today. It's teachings are timeless and life giving. The Center Within takes a look at these teachings and brings them to the practical level of experience. From meditation (stillness) to social interaction, The Center Within is complete and full of loving insight!

5-0 out of 5 stars the last book
I had to post a review before I even read it, I just looked over the first chapter descriptions, read the back cover, and have to tell you I am shaking, over a period of many years of intensive reading, i know this book is the last one I need to read......it ties all of the pieces together, "know thyself", this book is soaked in TRUTH and LOVE, or should I say TRUTH IS LOVE!

5-0 out of 5 stars Uplifting, inspired, a guiding light - I can't say enough!
This "must have" book is a guide post to spiritual living. It ignores dogma and religionists while championing the living faith of Jesus. Those who find no home in organized religion will find comfort and a friend in these pages. Compelling, encouraging, thoughtful; yet easy to read and understand. Offers great hope for these troubled times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lessons for Personal Enlightenment - check it out!
Religious dogma and ritual have, at times, obscured the unifying fact that we are all children of God. This book is an attempt to focus our attention to one of the most basic aspects of our brief life here on earth - sharing God's love. With a Urantia book backdrop, The Center Within reminds us that God resides in each of us and encourages us to communicate with God through daily meditative "stillness" practice. It gives practical suggestions on how best to accomplish that connection with God and describes the fruits of the spirit that will emerge from that practice. Check it out, folks. I think you'll like it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book of the Millenium
I have been reading Le Livre d'Urantia for eighteen years. It has changed my life completly. This is THE answer we have all been looking for. It makes so much sense.

If you are looking for a book on UFOs with little green guys using their mind power to journey through space and time, or if you believe that painting your house front door yellow will bring you hapiness and health, and other similar stuff, then this book is NOT for you.

But, if you are looking for intelligent, no non-sense spiritual reflections on our universe, our world, our past and our future, if you believe in God, if you believe that Jesus is the Son of God, without judging or rejecting other religious beliefs, if you can keep an open mind, without going to the opposite and not be able to discriminate between common sense and absurdity, if you are at that stage in your life where you feel emptiness and dissatisfied with traditional belief systems, or with the so-called "New Age" aberrations, then maybe you are ready for the Urantia Book.

But don't worry, if you're not ready yet, the Book will wait for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is best in its class on spiritual excellence!
I have read this book many times over twenty five years. It gave added dimensions to my life as a Buddhist monk, and to my current life as a Christian minister. The book details a simple message of human sonship withGod, as lived and taught by Jesus of Nazareth, and sets it against abackdrop of the enormous spiritual potentials that exist throughout allexistence. I recommend it to anyone who wants more out of Christiantheology, and more of what is beyond Buddhist enlightenment experience. Atfirst the Urantia papers may be hard going, but if the reader persists andfinds their own pace, the spiritual fruits will absolutely astonish andfulfil.

1-0 out of 5 stars this book does not explain the truth, if there is one
This book is quite dogmatic, gives a structure to the world that is not open-minding and tolerant... There are some good points, well explained, but most of the historical things are more inventions than reality. Moreover write that such beautiful beings as archange and others go down onthe earth to write such things so stupidily is amazing... These beings arein other plans and if the authors of such a book could really feel them, this book would be completely different... ... Read more

The media has temporarily turned its large but constantly blinking eye away from cult-of-the-day reportage after the Waco conflagration, but such organizations continue to collect adherents. Martin Gardner, best known as mathematical-games-meister for Scientific American, turns his refreshingly unblinking gaze on the origin and continuing growth of the Urantian cult.It is a marvellous study of the ways in which ideas can be propagated through society. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Reading - Even for Urantians!
Given that Martin Gardner is a skeptic, and that the Urantia book is a so-called "revealed" Bible-like text which mixes Christianity, philosophy, history, and many strange, wild, and often nutty ideas, Gardner's book is primarily worth reading for the history and background of the Urantia Book and movement based upon it. Gardner's opinions are condescending and nasty at times, but one expects that from so harsh a critic of spirituality as he. I am a liberal Christian and an open-minded skeptic, not a "Urantian", yet I have read much of the Urantia Book and know many Urantians, good people all of them. While I am generally skeptical of any claims of spiritual revelation, I have found the Urantia movement peaceful and positive in nature, not worthy of being labeled "cult" and lumped in with Waco, Heaven's Gate, etc. I do not buy most of what the Urantia Book claims as reality, but that does not mean I do not respect much of what the readers stand for. I do believe Martin Gardner has done us all a service in tracking the cloudy history of the Urantia movement and how "the book" came to be, and I believe as he that the U Book is simply a creation of human minds. Educated human minds, but human minds, nonetheless. Yet that does not lessen my appreciation for the merits of the U Book, it's devoted readers, and the message it tries to get across. I would recommend this book with very few reservations, to all Urantia readers and believers, and anyone interested in the real history of the movement. It not only enhanced my understanding of the U Book, it filled in most of the blanks on the creation of that mammoth text. To Urantians afraid of reading this book or critical of Gardner, I believe you do yourselves and your movement a disservice. I would invite you to open the windows a bit. Start with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An eye opening expose' of gross religous manipulations
Martin Gardner has clearly done extensive and scholarlyresearch in preparing this book. It was fairly easy to read and quiteto the point. I found it very interesting that the Urantia book found it's origin with a group of dis-gruntled ex Seventh Day Adventists. As Martin Gardner points out so clearly E.G. White who founded the S.D.A. church is well known for her blatant plagerisms and her hypocrisy. What a foundation to build another elaborate religious manipulation upon. And this is just what Dr. William Sadler did, he master minded the creation of a compromised Bible filled with outright lies and fiction mixed with stolen truths for those who are unwilling to accept the God of the Holy Bible.

I believe that Martin Gardner showed beyond the shadow of a doubt that the Urantia book and the entire Urantia movement which has followed is built on a foundation of shifting sand. The Urantia book is quite clearly not the product of pure divine inspiriation but rather a clever and intricate web of fantasy and deception mixed with faulty S.D.A. doctrines and plagerized truths. I would highly recommend this book especially to those who have believed the lie that the Urantia book was inspired by 'higher beings'. No The Urantia book was inspired and compiled by dishonest, arrogant and power hungry indivduals.

1-0 out of 5 stars An Angry Man with an Angry Agenda
Martin Gardner ia an angry man with an angry agenda.

Interestingly,The Urantia Book is a beautiful book based on unlifting hope for all of God's children.

5-0 out of 5 stars If possible, read this book before reading the Urantia Book.
Even though Gardner's book is fairly formidable (445 pages; 1.7 pounds), do yourself a favor and read it before you buy and read the Urantia Book (2,097 pages; 4.3 pounds, per Gardner). By doing so, you will hopefully save the cost of buying, the time spent reading, and, most importantly, avoid a possible commitment to the Urantia Book.
I first ran across the Urantia Book (UB) in 1973, bought it and spent months of careful reading before finishing it in early 1974. At that time I got rid of the UB because I felt that, although unconventional, it was essentially Christian and capable of only producing yet another Christian sect, and was therefore limited in perspective and usefulness. The racial and religious prejudices, spread throughout the book but concentrated especially in the Jesus papers, were obvious, and likely not the product of those with a comprehensive view of the world, as assumed by the UB's purported cosmic authors. Because of the UB's complexity and obviously Christian focus, I concluded at the time that the source must be, say, a very cynical Christian mathematician.
Although I have not paid much attention to the UB for the last 30 years, I was very interested to recently run across Gardner's book in the library and to find that my initial reaction to the UB had some elements of truth. From Gardner's book, I learned that the authors of the UB, or at least its editors/compilers, were from a strong Christian (Seventh Day Adventist) background. Also, to date, approximately 50% of the UB has been shown to be directly copied or summarized from a variety of early 20th century religious, scientific, sociological, and historical publications that were available to UB authors prior to its publication in 1955. Of course this fact runs counter to the extraterrestrial origin claimed by the UB's naturally very secretive human sources. Whether their motivation was to create a special aura around the book, or to shield themselves from public accountability, in the short term it is clear that the miraculous origin gathered more attention than would have the open acknowledgement of its copyrighted human origin. Who would have given any attention to this eclectic mishmash if the sources had been duly cited? The fact that much of the material was illegally plagiarized is not in doubt, and is clearly presented by Gardner. This is not just his opinion, as stated by some UB devotees, because Gardner's book contains multiple instances of, and references to, identical passages copied word for word from identified, copyrighted sources into the UB. This activity has been shown, to date, to account for approximately half the UB; perhaps the remaining 50% of the UB is also plagiarized, or portions of it may have been authored by its editors/compilers. The complexity of some of the UB can be attributed in part to the complexity of some of its sources; at least one of the sources noted was a physics publication by an acknowledged expert of the day. Some of the testable scientific assertions presented in the UB were generally accepted in the early 1900's, but have since been discredited. However, to non-scientists unaware of the plagiarized sources, the complexity of the UB can be dazzling. This is understandable, because even though the accuracy of science increases over time, the complexity of any particular scientific theory is more likely a function of the individual author than its era.
If one wishes to be dazzled by complexity, why not simply pick up any college textbook of higher mathematics, particle physics, or astronomy and attempt to read that? If one doesn't understand it, or is amazed, confused, or dazzled by it, does that make the source extraterrestrial? No, because the authors don't claim such a source. Instead, they rely on their own effort, expertise, and availability as well as the honesty and testability of their work. The UB authors eliminate these sources of true credibility, and rely instead on the dazzle factor of the UB, as well as the significant credulity factor expected to be supplied by disenfranchised Christian readers, who are eager to see Jesus again at the top, even if in an unusual way.
As any potential readers of the UB have their resources, their time, and perhaps their very futures to consider, I think a skeptical attitude should definitely be taken before reading the UB. Fortunately, Gardner's book now makes the information available to apply this reasonable skepticism, and perhaps prevent some gullible individuals from being conned by undeserving charlatans.
If you have already read the UB, reading Gardner's book may help you achieve a new perspective. However, as Gardner notes in his book, in many instances this does not occur. It seems that the weaknesses of the UB, resulting from its particular human sources, tend to fit those of its devotees, resulting in a kind of symbiotic fit. To me this seems unfortunate, but not surprising. As these individuals are adults, they are obviously free to choose what they wish, and are ultimately responsible for themselves.

1-0 out of 5 stars To Correct the Record: Gardner's misquotes and distortions
Half Truths (Suppressed Evidence): Any statement usually intended to deceive that omits some of the facts necessary for an accurate description.

I agree it is good to debunk bogus pseudo-science. At the same time, I think most people would agree that in any critique being factually accurate, fair, and honest to context is important; and therefore, when quoting, summarizing, and paraphrasing from an original source one should do so accurately, fairly, and in context to assure one does not distort the original sources meaning in any way by adding or subtracting from it.

In Did Adam and Eve Have Navels on page 42 Gardner states (my emphasis):

"On page 1352 of the Urantia Book we learn that the Jupiter-Saturn encounter of May 29, 7 B.C., gave the appearance of a single star, which we know it didn't, and this accounts for what the supermortals call the "beautiful legend" that grew up about the "Star.""

Later Gardner refers to the Star of Bethlehem as a legend or beautiful myth, and states on page 44:

"In my not-so-humble opinion, the story of the Star is pure myth, similar to many ancient legends about the miraculous appearance of a star to herald a great event, such as the birth of Caesar, Pythagoras, Krishna (the Hindu savior), and other famous persons and deities."

As the full quotation of the paragraph below shows, this is essentially what the paragraph in question in the Urantia Book is saying; that there was no Star of Bethlehem, it was only a myth, a legend, albeit a beautiful one, and that ancient man was "continually spinning such beautiful myths about the lives of their religious leaders and political heroes."

The actual and complete paragraph in the Urantia Book states:

"These wise men saw no star to guide them to Bethlehem. The beautiful legend of the star of Bethlehem originated in this way: Jesus was born August 21 at noon, 7 B.C. On May 29, 7 B.C., there occurred an extraordinary conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in the constellation of Pisces. And it is a remarkable astronomic fact that similar conjunctions occurred on September 29 and December 5 of the same year. Upon the basis of these extraordinary but wholly natural events the well-meaning zealots of the succeeding generation constructed the appealing legend of the star of Bethlehem and the adoring Magi led thereby to the manger, where they beheld and worshiped the newborn babe. Oriental and near-Oriental minds delight in fairy stories, and they are continually spinning such beautiful myths about the lives of their religious leaders and political heroes. In the absence of printing, when most human knowledge was passed by word of mouth from one generation to another, it was very easy for myths to become traditions and for traditions eventually to become accepted as facts." (Urantia Book 1352)

Gardner's statement above implies that the Urantia Book claims "the Jupiter-Saturn encounter of May 29, 7 B.C., gave the appearance of a single star..." This is false and a distortion of the actual paragraph's meaning. The first sentence in the paragraph states clearly "These wise men saw no star to guide them to Bethlehem." Nowhere in the paragraph in question is it stated that the Jupiter-Saturn encounter gave the appearance of a single star. I searched the online version of the Urantia Book and could find no statement that the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction "gave the appearance of a single star." This appears to indicate that Gardner has misquoted the Urantia Book by adding information that was not in the original source and omitting information, the first sentence of the paragraph in question, which contradicts his own fallacious statement. Gardner then goes on to use his own false statement as a basis upon which to criticize the Urantia Book, by stating "which we know it didn't." I fail to see how this erroneous quotation, which falls short of even minimal accuracy and fairness, furthers the cause of reason or science.

In Gardner's "not-so-humble opinion" the story of the Star of Bethlehem is only a myth similar to many ancient legends about famous persons and deities. This is essentially what the Urantia Book is saying in the paragraph in question, which leads me to ask, why would Gardner overlook this and instead distort the paragraph's meaning by misquoting it and then go on to make the same point? Did he simply repeat the story of some over zealous reader without checking the facts? Whatever the reason, perhaps Gardner should exercise a little more caution by actually reading the source he is quoting, and at a minimum attempt to quote it fairly, accurately, and in context. ... Book Description

The Tao of God restates the Chinese philosopher Lao Tsu's Tao Te Ching using insights from a contemporary revelatory work called The Urantia Book. In verse, it expresses a philosophy of living that harmonizes logic and intuition, science and religion, Eastern thought and Western thought, existence and non-existence, the material and the spiritual, action and non-action, peace and conflict, stillness and movement, and light and darkness. The Tao of God is an embellishment to the original Tao Te Ching, adding 20 extra chapters to present the idea that spiritual insight is infinite.

5-0 out of 5 stars East Meets West
If you like the message of Taoism ("man's eternal destiny is everlasting union with Tao, Supreme God and Universal King"), and can accept the possibility of current revelation as presented in the Urantia Book, then you will like this book, a mixture of Eastern spiritual thought and current revelatory insight, crafted by a master storyteller and poet, Richard Omura. Easy reading and to the point, Richard takes Lao-tse's original 81 chapters, embellishes them, and adds twenty additional chapters to present poetic enlightenment for seekers of all faiths. From today to eternity, the rules will not change, as we traverse the myriad experiences in a journey that will ultimately lead us back to our Creator, the First Source and Center, to Tao. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. My hat is off to Mr. Omura for this fine work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Concordex brings the Urantia Book alive!
Yesterday my copy of the Concordex arrived and this morning I read the 50 page introduction in it. This book is incredible!

First of all Clyde was on the original forum and is also, IMO, an outstanding writer. One quick quote can give you an idea of this: "If you are earnestly seeking truth, the Urantia Book would provide you the thrills of your life. If you are a metaphysical "bar hopper", simply seeking to sip psychic samples proffered anywhere, expect little. For the Urantia Book is to drink deeply, to live with and by. It is not a diversionary shot-in-the-arm, or a spiritual incidental."

I had heard of the Concordex years ago, but had not looked into it seriously because I felt that the Urantia Book search engines could do a better job. This could not be farther from the truth. I really think that it will provide me with several years of new, insightful, UB reading. The 50 page intro also provides some excellent suggestions and ideas. One is a list of 803 interesting topics with corresponding page numbers. It suggests that if you read the selection and really like it, you put vertical bars in the margin of the UB and next to it you write in the previous related article page number and the following related page number. During subsequent trips through the UB, you will be attracted by the bars and then reread it. This is an excellent idea. I previously had used a yellow highlighter, but will now use a red ball point for the Concordex suggestions. It got me to wonder what Clyde's UB must have looked like and what happened to it.

I could go on and on about the interesting topics, but I'll just give one more. One topic is "numbers", you know, things like how many inhabitable worlds in a system. Two that caught my eye are 1) there are 3 inhabitable planets in our solar system of 12 planets, and 2) there are 7 super universes in the Grand Universe but about 70,000 in the Master Universe. Wow!

If you have a computer the electronic CD-ROM version will give you greater flexibility and enhance you use. If not, this book is a great price, and much cheaper than the official one published by the Urantia Fountation.
If you have questions about Urantia, write to me.
