    Book Description

You might have heard about a wonderful little yarn store in downtown Seattle. Debbie Macomber can take you there! Thousands of women discovered it when they read her bestselling novelThe Shop on Blossom Street.

Whether this is a return visit or your very first, you'll find that A Good Yarn is a place of welcome and warmth. A place where women feel at home. Where they're among friends, old and new:

The first person you'll meet is Lydia Hoffman, who owns the shop. In the year since it opened, A Good Yarn has thrived -- and so has Lydia. A lot of that is due to Brad Goetz. But when Brad's ex-wife reappears, Lydia is suddenly afraid to trust her newfound happiness.

Elise Beaumont, a retired librarian, joins one of Lydia's popular knitting classes. Since losing her life savings, Elise has been living with her daughter, Aurora -- the only positive legacy from her brief marriage to professional gambler Marvin "Maverick" Beaumont. Now she learns that her onetime husband plans to visit and that Aurora wants a relationship with her father, regardless of how Elise feels about him.

Bethanne Hamlin, like Elise, is facing the fallout from a divorce. But her husband, Grant, left her for another woman -- not a pack of cards -- and she's still struggling to reshape her life. She joins the knitting class at her children's urging; it's the first step in her effort to recover a sense of dignity and hope. Then she starts a small business and meets a man with whom she has something surprising in common!

Courtney Pulanski is a depressed and overweight teenager. She's staying with her grandmother, who's trying to help her . . . help that takes the form of dragging her to seniors' swim sessions -- and to the knitting class at A Good Yarn.

Like so many women, these four find companionship and comfort in each other and in this age-old craft. Who would've thought that knitting socks could change your life?

Debbie Macomber, the author of The Shop on Blossom Street, Changing Habits, Between Friends and Thursdays at Eight, has become a leading voice in women's fiction worldwide. Her work has appeared on every major bestseller list, including those of the New York Times, USA TODAY, and Publishers Weekly. She is a multiple award winner, and there are more than sixty million copies of her books in print. ... Read more

What a sweet and delightful novel this one is. Very romantic, full of love and generosity....as well as the women in the knitting class. Debbie Macomber has given us a delightful read. One in which i did not want to put down

4-0 out of 5 stars No one does Women's Fiction better!
Debbie Macomber is one my favorite authors. No one can write about women, for women better (in my opinion!!).A GOOD YARN is no different from any of her other books on this subject. It's not her best novel (BETWEEN FRIENDS has that honor!), but it's certainly a pleasant read, and would make the perfect "beach companion"or poolside read this summer.

The book is a sequel (or follow-up) to last year's SHOP ON BLOSSOM STREET, with the story revolving aroud the main character and shop's owner, Lydia. This year's knitting class teaches us how to make a pair of socks (an actual pattern is included inside the book), while Lydia meets and becomes friends with a new group of three women. The three characters from last year's book (students from her first knitting class) make"cameo" appearances, but the story focuses on Lydia and her three new students.

Written from the point of view of all four characters, the chapters once again alternate between narrators (which is actually typical for a Debbie Macomber novel). While this can become confusing or even a nuisance under the pen of other writers, Debbie Macomber does it flawlessly and effortlessly, so that readers get to know each character on an intimate level, and can actually see themselves becoming with friends with one or all of all of the book's main characters.

Lydia is the shop owner and the one who brings these women together (through her knitting classes which she offers at her shop). After battling illness for most of her life, she's given a clean bill of health and finally found, what she believes is true love with Brad (the handsome UPS guy!) and has made a connection with & become much closer to her sister, whom she has battled with for nearly as long as she's battled her illness.

Bethane is a recently divorced mother of two, who is learning how to live life on her own, discovering who she is, and what it is she can offer to those around her, all the while trying to deal with the emotional roller coster her children are on due to the divorce.Elise is also divorced, whose gambling ex-husband comes to town to re-accquainthimself with their now grown and married daughter, while trying to mend the fences with the one & only woman he's ever really truly loved.Courtney is a teen-aged girl who is new in town and has recently come to stay with her grandmother. After losing her mother in a car accident, her father to his work, and her siblings to marriage, Courtney must deal with a new school, making new friends, and all the other trials & tribulations that all teens go through, all without the guidance of a parent close by to lead the way. Each character has their own individual story to tell, while at the same time, we see how their paths cross and how each affects one another's life and help each other along.

The stories are fairly predictable, yet the familarity of each character with their trimumphs and tragedies makes this a comfortable, enjoyable read that most readers will certainly identify with and feel like one of the friends in the book.I'm sure many will be wishing that a similar shop existed in their own neighborhood!

My only "negative" thought about this book, and the reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5, is that I felt the characters & stories were too similar and parallel to the characters & stories of last year's SHOP ON BLOSSOM STREET.While most of Debie Macomber's books have a familar feeling to them, since most deal with the friendships of women and are often told in a similar way, I'd prefer to meet new charcters with new stories and go on a new journey. It didn't make this book any less enjoyable, it just left me with a feeling of "been there, done that."

I still think Debbie Macomber is one of the best authors of women's fiction today, and her stories and characters feel very real with many true-to-life experiences. If you enjoy stories about the love of friends and family with a little romance thrown in, you're certain to enjoy any one of Debbie Macomber's HC releases.

You don't have to have read SHOP ON BLOSSOM STREET to enjoy this book, but it will certainly help fill in some of the blanks.Once you've finished this book, if you're left wanting more, I highly recommend BETWEEN FRIENDS, which was written by Debbie Macomber and released about two years ago - it remains one of my favorite books of all time!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Page-Turner and an Inspiration to knit socks!
This novel kept me up all night last night! Debbie Macomber teases you into reading just one more page all the way through, so don't start it until you have time to read it all at once! And now that I am done I feel like the characters are real people.

I think anyone who reads this book is going to walk into the first yarn store they see and ask to have a class like the characters in the book do. The only thing missing for me was that no men were knitting. Sometimes it seemed like the author was about to have a man or boy knit but she never did.

I learned to knit socks on two circular needles three years ago from Cat Bordhi's excellent book, Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles. A Good Yarn starts right out with a sock pattern by Nancy Bush (she is the matriarch of sock knitting books!) done on double pointed needles, and then the same pattern is given again by Cat Bordhi for two circular needles. The story is about a group of women who learn to knit socks as taught in Cat's book and so I felt like I was right in the room with them, because I knew exactly what they were knitting!

This second knitting novel by Debbie Macomber (the first is Blossom Street) is a wonderful gift for any knitter or even for any woman who appreciates true friends. There's a bunch of knitting novels now, from mysteries to Debbie's wonderful books. I read Knitting: a Novel recently and it is very good too, but not as easy to follow as this one. Cat Bordhi also wrote a novel that has sock knitting in it and even tree house knitting (no kidding). The book is called Treasure Forest. It kept me up all night too turning the next page until the very end.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Yarn
Another class is about to start at A Good Yarn, and with it, more lives that are in need of repair have the opportunity to come together and be reknit. There is Elise, a retired librarian who lost her heart and savings to Maverick Beaumont, a professional gambler, or more aptly, loser. Then comes Bethane, a woman whose husband ditched her for a younger model, leaving her to raise two teens who are in the throes of acting out. Finally, there is Courtney, a teen with a weight problem who does not want to be in that town, much less the class. Together with their teacher, Lydia Hoffman and her sister Margaret, these women will begin to weave new lives, ones that interlock with each others' in new and inspirational ways.

*** Although the shifting perspective between first and third person, as well as the changing point of view between characters takes a while to get the hang of, in the end it is worthwhile to do so. This book is not billed as inspirational, per se, but you would not be wrong to look for inspiration herein. ***

2-0 out of 5 stars Predictable and Bland
I found the characters in A Good Yarn rather cliché: the divorcee who is still in love with her gambling ex-husband; the gambling ex-husband with a heart of gold; the woman who finds courage to start a career when her husband of 20-odd years dumps her for a younger woman; the rebellious teenager; the wise grandmother, ad nauseum. The plot was predictable: of course the teenager loses the weight and ends up going to the homecoming dance with the football teem quarterback/Homecoming King; of course the goodhearted ex-husband gambler is dying of cancer and mostly reformed. The best that can be said of the writing was that it was redundant; for example, Macomber writes how the gambler's luck at the casinos influenced his moods, and then tells us in the very next sentence that he was happy when he won and depressed when he lost, as if it would have been the other way around.I didn't particularly sympathize with any of the characters or their situations. ... Book Description

With the dazzling blend of romance, humor, and poignant storytelling that has made her one of the world's best-loved authors, Johanna Lindsey presents the passionate Regency-era tale of an earl's daughter who dares to pose as the wife of a deadly mercenary in order to save her former guardian.

Lady Margaret Landor first met Sebastian Townshend as a child, when he caught her peeking into her older sister's engagement ball. Tall, dashing, and charming, Sebastian was one of the most sought-after bachelors in Kent and cut a romantic figure she would not soon forget. Never did she dream that one day she would be living at his family's magnificent estate with Sebastian's father, the eighth Earl of Edgewood, as her guardian--while Sebastian is banished from his family due to the tragic results of a duel.

When life at Edgewood takes a sinister turn with the earl suffering a suspicious number of life-threatening accidents, Margaret wonders if Sebastian's younger brother and his wife have grown impatient to inherit the earldom. Setting out to find the one man she believes can set the situation to rights, she discovers that Sebastian Townshend has forged a new identity for himself on the continent.

Now known as The Raven, a deadly mercenary, notorious for accomplishing any mission no matter how seemingly impossible, he has vowed never to return to England. Not until Margaret meets his outrageous monetary demands does Sebastian agree to return home, reluctantly posing as her husband in order to facilitate his return to society. When he learns she cannot afford to pay his fee, he suggests a scandalous trade.

As Margaret and Sebastian work to uncover the intrigue at his father's estate, a fierce passion blooms that neither of them anticipated and neither can resist. But can Margaret persuade Sebastian to abandon the dark path he believes is his fate and claim the life--and love--he deserves? Breathtaking in scope and wondrously passionate, Marriage Most Scandalous is Johanna Lindsey at her finest.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Yarn!!
Debbie Macomber does a superb job of weaving together a tale of women from different age groups and backgrounds. Each of the women shows moments of courage, fear, turmoil, truimph, and love. If you were a fan of Thursday's at Eight, you'll love this book too.
The group starts out knitting a baby blanklet and ends up creating a friendship. I loved the way each of the characters relates to each other in their struggles (health, infertility, broken relationsips, etc.). In both little and large ways, the friendship that is created is stronger and more lasting then any of the blankets knitted.

5-0 out of 5 stars deep character study
Lydia Hoffman has defeated cancer twice. To celebrate life, Lydia opens A Good Yarn, a knitting supplies store in Seattle. She also teaches a class on knitting. The first lesson is "How to Knit a Baby Blanket".

Jacqueline Donovan reacts poorly to her son's news that she is to be a grandmother for the first time. She does not like her daughter-in-law Tammie Lee. Maybe her bitterness is because she knows her marriage to Reese, a partner in an architectural firm, is dying. She must make amends with her son Paul so she joins A Good Yarn knitting class.

Desperate to become pregnant, Carol Girard joins the class seeking hope that her and her husband Doug's final attempt with in vitro pregnancy succeeds. This is her last chance to have the child she craves.

The court ordered Alix Townsend to do community service as part of her sentencing. She decides that knitting for the Linus Project should satisfy her case worker. However, she needs to first learn to knit so she joins the class too.

This four diverse women bond in friendship and love as they work on the baby blanket. Though their individual dreams may not be answered, a group dream forges as each learns the meaning of life.

THE SHOP ON BLOSSOM STREET is a fabulous deep character study that rotates the narration between the women so that the audience has four subplots that cleverly knit together into a powerful look at the ups and downs of modern day living. Though not all dreams are fulfilled and some change for instance to cooking, fans will enjoy Debbie Macomber's strong tale of four females struggling to overcome different setbacks.

WOW! Another one from Debbie. You can never go wrong in one of her books. When you are reading it, it makes you feel like you are there. Heart warming. Get this book. When you do get two. Share one. I did.
    Thanks again Debbie

4-0 out of 5 stars A Heartwarming Yarn
The shop in THE SHOP ON BLOSSOM STREET is a yarn shop on a quiet Seattle street that is just on the cusp of gentrification. The shop itself is not merely a backdrop for the plot of Debbie Macomber's sweet new novel; it's also the catalyst that brings together four dissimilar women and helps them weave together a friendship out of the different-colored threads of their lives.

For each of the four women, knitting represents the fulfillment of a wish or dream. For Carol Girard, it's the overwhelming desire to have a child. When Carol hears about the new yarn shop on Blossom Street and learns that the beginning knitting class will be knitting a baby blanket, she knows it's a sign. Carol and her husband have tried for years to conceive a child; now, about to undergo their third in vitro procedure, their time and insurance dollars are running out. Carol has given up so much to have a child --- her normal fast-paced routine, even the high-stress job she loves --- and she hopes that knitting can also fill empty hours in her new slower-paced lifestyle.

For Jacqueline Donovan, it's the hope that she can be a good grandmother despite her loathing for her daughter-in-law. Jacqueline, a fixture at the country club and charity events, has been in a loveless marriage for years. She claims to despise Tammie Lee because she's southern, blonde and ditzy --- in reality, though, Jacqueline is jealous of the obvious love that exists between her son and Tammie Lee. At her husband's request, Jacqueline enrolls in the beginning knitting class, hoping she can knit a baby blanket as a peace offering.

Alix Townsend, the youngest member of the group, also seems the least likely knitter. She signs up for the beginning knitting class in the hopes that donating her baby blanket for charity can knock off some of her court-mandated community service hours; secretly, though, knitting is part of Alix's fantasy of a mother she never had. She hopes that by taking up knitting she can recapture some of the nurturing she missed out on as a child. Rebellious and bitter, Alix rubs just about everyone the wrong way until they discover her vulnerability and kindness, hidden under her dyed hair and black leather.

Most poignant of the four women in THE SHOP ON BLOSSOM STREET is Lydia Hoffman, the owner of the yarn shop. For Lydia, knitting in general and owning a yarn shop in particular symbolizes life, a life she couldn't imagine just a few years ago. Having survived two bouts of brain cancer, Lydia never expected to live to thirty, let alone to open her own business. Lydia says, "The shop was my affirmation of life." Although Lydia has taken a leap of faith by opening her yarn shop, she is less courageous when it comes to romance.

With their varying backgrounds and different agendas, it's not surprising that these four women clash when they come together for their first knitting class. Jacqueline and Alix, in particular, are at each other's throats from the start. It's also no surprise that over the course of the summer, these four women form a close bond of friendship that is tested when tragedy threatens one of their own. The characters, despite their emotional development, are not really developed beyond their initial preoccupations. However, it's a rare novel that manages to be sweet without becoming syrupy, and THE SHOP ON BLOSSOM STREET achieves that balance.

Both knitters and non-knitters will find much to enjoy here. Knitters have a bonus: a free baby blanket pattern (the same one the characters learn to knit) is included at the start of the novel, and quotes from well-known knitters are scattered throughout. Non-knitters can still find many pleasures in this satisfying, if somewhat predictable, tale. And who knows --- maybe Lydia and her friends will inspire readers to take up needles themselves!

    Book Description

Lunacy was Nate Burke's last chance. As a Baltimore cop, he'd watched his partner die on the street-and the guilt still haunts him. With nowhere else to go, he accepts the job as Chief of Police in this tiny, remote Alaskan town. Aside from sorting out a run-in between a couple of motor vehicles and a moose, he finds his first weeks on the job are relatively quiet. But just as he wonders whether this has been all a big mistake, an unexpected kiss on New Year's Eve under the brilliant Northern Lights of the Alaska sky lifts his spirit and convinces him to stay just a little longer.

Meg Galloway, born and raised in Lunacy, is used to being alone. She was a young girl when her father disappeared, and she has learned to be independent, flying her small plane, living on the outskirts of town with just her huskies for company. After her New Year's kiss with the Chief of Police, she allows herself to give in to passion-while remaining determined to keep things as simple as possible. But there's something about Nate's sad eyes that gets under her skin and warms her frozen heart.

And now, things in Lunacy are heating up. Years ago, on one of the majestic mountains shadowing the town, a crime occurred that is unsolved to this day-and Nate suspects that a killer still walks the snowy streets. His investigation will unearth the secrets and suspicions that lurk beneath the placid surface, as well as bring out the big-city survival instincts that made him a cop in the first place. And his discovery will threaten the new life-and the new love-that he has finally found for himself.

This was a great conclusion to the series. Each book can stand on his own but Nora Robert threads the grandmother lost jewels throughout the series. It was great -- couldn't put the book it down!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love those Calhoun women!!!!
"Megan's Mate" was my favorite story in this set. While all of the Calhouns are great..this story was a bit different since Megan wasn't one of the 4 sisters.Great reading....and Kevin was such a little sweetie!

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable sequel and conclusion to The Calhouns
I enjoy light romance mixed with some mystery/adventure and with well developed secondary characters. These last two stories of the 4 Calhoun sisters and their sister-in-law were very touching as both women, Suzanna and Megan, were single moms.Suzanna through divorce and Megan as a never married and left-in-the-lurch innocent.Suzanna particulary had a rough time trusting herself and her feelings after a very rough marriage and had so much concern for her sons that as a mom myself I could empathize.Megan was so young when she trusted innocently (here is another reason that abstinence before marriage is not a bad idea) and was so hurt and ignored by the father of her child.

The secondary characters of Dutch and Aunt Coco were lots of fun and you could feel how Dutch was nervous about the whole thing but couldn't fight it.And then you add in the mystery of the emeralds and Bianca and Christian's relationship and that was very touching as well.

I recommend it -- not as a heavy serious mystery but as a light, touchingly funny and sensitive set of stories. ... Read more

    Book Description

#1 New York Times bestselling author Johanna Lindsey sweeps readers into the privileged world of English aristocrats as she presents a new novel of passion, intrigue, and romantic pleasures featuring the incomparable Malorys -- a family of dashing rogues, rakehell adventurers, and spirited ladies. Now Jeremy, the son of gentleman pirate James Malory, falls in love....

When Danny, a young woman who grew up on the streets of London with no memory of her real family, is banished from her gang because she helped handsome rakehell Jeremy Malory steal back the jewels his friend lost in a card game, Danny demands that Jeremy give her a job. She is determined to become respectable in order to fulfill her dream of marrying and starting a family. Intrigued by her beauty and spunk, Jeremy hires Danny as his upstairs maid, although he wants her as his mistress.

Under the tutelage of Jeremy and his cousin Regina, Danny blossoms into a lady. Although she is drawn to Jeremy by passionate feelings she has never experienced before, she refuses to be anything more than a servant to him because she knows he is not the marrying kind. When Danny undergoes a Cinderella-like transformation and poses as Jeremy's new love in an attempt to help him avert a scandal, a few highly placed members of the ton remark on how familiar Danny looks. Now tongues are wagging, raising the question of her true identity, which threatens not only Danny's chances of capturing Jeremy's heart but her very life.

With the humor, lovable characters, and romantic intensity that have placed Johanna Lindsey's six previous Malory novels in the ranks of the best-loved and most widely read romantic novels of our time, Johanna Lindsey delights readers with an emotionally powerful tale of an irresistible scoundrel who meets his match in a brave, strong-minded young woman and can't help but fall in love. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally
I have been waiting forever, like many other Malory family fans for Jeremy Malory's story. I was so surprised, and delighted to have stumbled upon it a few weeks ago. I read many of the reviews and was a little disappointed because though most liked it, most had something negative to say about it. I thought that it was great. I thought it was funny, very sexy, and I highly recommend it. I thought that Danny was the perfect match for the charming Jeremy. And it was great how Mrs. Lindsey revisited the history of the Malory family, and most of its members to give new readers a taste but not too much to cause boredom for the old. Yet to be a little hypocritical, I do wish that it had contained more love scenes, instead of glossing over most. There have been some comments about Jeremy taking advantage of the fact that Danny was drunk. It's a historical romance novel. The female lead is usually seduced during some state of vulnerability or extreme circumstance to justify their fall from virginal grace and show their difference from the females of loose morals. If it had been a modern romance novel then I agree it would have been a little inappropriate but in a age where teenage girls have a season to search out a husband and are expect to do nothing but shop and beautify themselves all day, I think the seduction should be view in a different light. In the end, I thought the book was great and I give it two thumbs, with my sincerest thank you to Mrs. Lindsey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it.
Jeremy Malory's book is finally here! As an avid fan of Ms. Lindsey's work, I've been disappointed in her more recent work, but this book lives up to every expectation. Jeremy Malory has all the charm of Anthony and James but has an added depth and compassion which work to make him a very appealing character. Johanna Lindsey does an excellent job of creating Jeremy's perfect mate. Danny, as a pickpocket who grew up in the London slums, fits Jeremy and his own childhood to perfection. It's such a treat to read a book about two people with such a capacity to love! It is my favorite book of Ms. Lindsey's since Tender Rebel and Gentle Rogue!

3-0 out of 5 stars The Malory clan continues
I had fallen in love with the Malory clan from the beginning (Love Only Once)and loved each and every book that came out. When Jeremey's story came out, I was so excited. I fell for him when we met him and laughed as he grew in the following stories. I was a little disappointed with his story. This story could have been more for another Malory (one of Eddie's boys) then for Jeremey. However, I am glad that he finally found love. I wish we saw more of his family epescially James and Tony. They were always there for the others it only seem to make since that James would have been around to help his son through his time of love. I do hope that Lindsey continues on with more of the Malory clan. This family is the most loving and the funniest family I have ever met.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Wonderful Malory Tale
A Loving Scoundrel by Johanna Lindsey is another marvelous Malory novel.

Jeremy Malory sets up a trap to catch a thief. He needs this thief to help a friend retrieve jewels lost in a fixed card game. He gets more then he bargained for when he enlists Danny in his scheme.

Danny had no memory of her life before she joined the street gang at the age of 5. She had disguised herself as a boy to fit in. By helping Jeremy she is kicked out of her gang. Danny figures Jeremy owes her. So, she strikes a bargain with him. Danny will work as his upstairs maid if he will help her refine herself.

What comes to pass is a battle of wills. Jeremy to bed her and Danny to stay out of his bed.

When trouble from her past comes to harm Danny, Jeremy will do anything to protect her.

This is a wonderful continuation of the Malory clan, the witty conversations, smoldering passions and the interfering family.

You can not go wrong with a Johanna Lindsey novel.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrifying
I could not believe this book. First Jeremy had absolutely no charm whatsoever. He relied solely on his looks and he was just as bad as Emily in this book by doing whatever he deemed nevessary to get what he wanted. The heroine even though she wanted him had morals and since she wouldn't give into him he deliberately waited unti she was drunk to sleep with her which in my book is the same thing as date rape. I expected so much more from Lindsey but after reading this and A Man to Call My Own too I'm taking her off my list. I just could not believe that the 'hero' would resort to date rape to get Danny to sleep with him. This book was flat and nothing up the Lindsey's usally caliber. The only good parts in the book are when James and Anthony are sparing which unfortunately isn't very often. ... Read more

    Book Description

With her trademark electrifying storytelling and razor-sharp tension, New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Lowell proves once again why she is one of today's top masters of suspense -- in a riveting tale of dark family secrets ready to explode with the devastating force of a Southwestern earthquake.

The powerful Quintrell family of New Mexico has spent decades in the public eye. Now the recent death of the clan's patriarch, a former U.S. senator, has placed his son, Governor Josh Quintrell, squarely in the spotlight as he prepares his run for the highest political office in the land. It is not a good time to be rattling skeletons in the family's closets.

Researching personal histories isn't just Carolina "Carly" May's profession, it's her passion. When the governor's eccentric Aunt Winifred invites Carly into the Quintrells' private Taos compound to compile a genealogical record of the illustrious residents, she can hardly believe her good luck. But digging into the past is raising troubling questions about the would-be president's private life, his late father and catatonic mother, and the grisly street crime that left his notorious drug-addicted sister dead. And it soon becomes frighteningly apparent that the motivation of the dotty old woman who hired Carly might be something more akin to revenge -- and that someone is determined to remove the inquisitive genealogist from the picture by any means necessary.

As a dark world of twisted passions and depraved crimes slowly opens up before Carly, she realizes that there is no one whom she dares to trust -- perhaps least of all Dan Duran, a dangerous and haunted mystery man who's somehow tied to the Quintrells' past. But she will need an ally to survive the terrible secrets a father carried to the grave and an even more devastating evil that lurks among the living -- because following the bloodlines of the wealthy and power-hungry can be a bloody business ... and some dead secrets can kill.

    Book Description

If you sense someone's watching you from afar, or if you feel a shadow other than your own at your back, I might as well pack it up and call it a day.

It's a job that makes a killing. Efficient, professional, and without apology, Lily Mansfield is a hired assassin, working as a contract agent for the CIA. Her targets are the powerful and corrupt, those who can't be touched by the law.

Now, after nineteen years of service, Lily has been drawn into a dangerous game that hasn't been sanctioned, seeking vengeance for her own reasons. Each move bolder than the next, she is compromising her superiors, drawing unwanted attention, and endangering her very life. Though stress and shock have made her feel somewhat invincible and a little cocky, Lily knows that she too can be taken out in an instant. And if it's her time, so be it. She intends to go down fighting.

A CIA agent himself, Lucas Swain recognizes the signs of trauma in the line of fire. His orders: either bring her in or bring her down. Yet he too is drawn into the game with Lily Mansfield, dancing on a tightrope as he tries to avoid a major international incident while still battling a tenacious foe who is dogging their every step. Keeping laser focus on the task at hand while vigilantly watching her back, Mansfield never sees the lethal peril that lies directly in her path . . . and how loyalty has a price.

Chock-full of the intrigue, breathless action, and sensuality that have made Linda Howard the master of romantic suspense, Kiss Me While I Sleep is a daring thriller of passion, sudden twists, and richly imagined characters who live and breathe in reader's hearts. It is the most gripping and complex novel of Linda Howard's career. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Romance with suspence
This story had some good suspense when the characters weren't in down time waiting for their informants to give more information. Of course during those times, they were busy as bunnies. My only qualm with this story is that there were not enough red herrings to throw you off. It could have been very surprising, but I wasn't fooled because I had no one else to suspect. It did make me cry at the end though, so I gave it 4 stars for the raw emotion.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Howard
This is one of Linda Howard's Finest. The plot centers around Lily an ex-agent who kills us the man responsible for the death of her friends and daughter. She is on the run from the CIA and others. Lucas Swain is the operative sent after her. This has plenty of twists and turns. The ending is great as well. If you are looking for great action this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!
Lily and Lucas were a great couple.I love Linda Howard and thought this was up there with her better works.Poor Lily had been used and abused by the CIA and was naturally a little messed up.However, her big heart was just waiting for a chance to settle down and love someone. And what a someone!Good looking, competent and what a sense of humor!I actually laughed out loud a few times. Highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kiss me anytime Swain
I loved this book! Lately I ahve been getting into watching strong female movies like Kill Bill, GI Jane, Alias, La Femme Nikita. And actually this book is riminiscent of all but GI Jane to give you an idea. The heroine is tough, ruthless, smart, no nonsense with a good heart. However, Swain the hero may just be the star in the story (think Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon) He was funny, care free, sexy,an Alpha Male but lovable. He doesnt say things that make him sound jerkish at all. I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A thriller with a twist!!
Lily is a much scarier female protagonist that many in other of Ms. Howard's books. She is a hired contract killer - mostly hired by the CIA.Without giving away the plot, which I hate when reviewers tell almost the whole story, Lily is going to meet her match in Lucas Swain who is even trickier than she is.Swain is more tender-hearted and feels that Lily has lost out on a lot of life. However, he was sent to take her out of the game and so falling for her is not a good plan.

How Swain and Lily wrestle with their personal lives and relationship and how the mystery they are solving unfolds and is resolved provides close calls, ingenuity and many plots twists that for me make this a very fun read!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Decent Read
When i bought this book, I knew it was a reprint.I would say that this book is enjoyable but it does not compare with her newer work. The book has the usual Laurens flare, yet it still is lacking in some areas. I would suggest you read this if you are a die hard fan. if you are new to Stephanie Laurens i would suggest you read her Cynsters novels first.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
Yuck.I really dislike it when an author's old work is published as if it were new.I unfortunately did not notice that the book was ten years old until after I bought it and started reading. This book is tedious and does not compare to her later works at all.It should at least have gotten a fresh edit or re-write before this publication.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a the first time in print.
Stephanie Laurens is one of my favorite romantic authors. I was excited when I saw this on the shelf, I though it would pick-up where the previous book in the series, The Reasons For Marriage, left off. While it does pick up where the preivous book left off, it is not of the quality we the readers have come to expect from Ms. Laurens. The Reasons For Marriage, though a MIRA reprint is more what we have come to expect from Ms. Laurens, but I digress. This is indeed a reprint of a previously issued book. While a pleasant read, it is not anywhere near the quality of Ms. Laurens Cynster series nor her Bastion Club series. Fortunately for us the readers Ms. Laurens style has greatly improved since the days when she wrote this book. I would definitely suggest that you read the authors Cynster series and her Bastion club series, both are excellent.

3-0 out of 5 stars Check it out carefully
I am a big fan of Stephanie Laurens and eagerly await her new books. I was very pleased to see this one on the shelf. Unfortunately when I got it home I saw that it was published by Mira (aka Harlequine). This is usually a clue that it is a reissue of an old book. I checked the copy write date and this book was originally issued in 1995. If you have not read it before it's worth a read. Not up to the standards of her Cynster novels or the Bastion Club but okay. Her style has matured since this book was written. If you have been reading Ms. Laurens' books for a while you should make sure you have not already read this one. I believe this particular book has been reissued more than once. It was enjoyable but not really a keeper. I will now have to return to the bookstore and wait for Stephanie's next New book. ... Read more
