3-0 out of 5 stars Not As Bad As Previously Reviewed
People should really keep in mind that this is a re-print of an earlier title by Ms. Hoag and as the saying goes practice makes perfect. Although it does not measure up to her later titles (Ashes to Ashes for example) it is still not a waste of time to pick this book up and read it.

Yes, there is romance involved and personally I feel that it was an added benefit to the story. It by no means overshadowed the storyline of murder in a small town where the Amish live together with the English.

This is really a multi-layer story about the main characters Dane and Elizabeth, the secondary characters, and changes that happen when the worst is seen in a town where everyone knows everyons business.

Murder is unheard of in the last thirty-three years in Still Water. Now one of the leaders of this small community is found dead in his car. The reasons behind this murder are many and the finger points at several people and at no one. Elizabeth who just moved from Atlanta with her good looks, southern accent, troubled son, and has purchases the local news paper finds the body of the local money man and finds herself in the center of the investigatation.

Dane the local sheriff is a ex-football player turned law officer. He is carrying around some old hurts from his past that color the way he looks at women like Elizabeth but he still can't avoid the attraction that he feels for her. To make matters worse she is a suspect to the murder or at the very least a unsuspected witness. Dane needs to solve the murder and at the same time protect his heart and the woman that threatnes his peacful existance.

Don't pick up this book thinking that it is only a suspense, but at the same time don't avoid it because of the romance involved. At times it is slow going but it is still a well written story by an author that I feel has proven herself in later works.

1-0 out of 5 stars You've got to be kidding me
I believe this book belongs in the teenage romance section of the bookstore. Through the course of one week, six different people fall in love with each other. A few other semi-interesting events are scattered around that general idea. But how many times must we read the line- "She needed him badly.." Somebody shoot me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Are We Reading the Same Book?
I'm truly surprised by all the negative comments, as this book, which I read years ago, remains my all-time favorite Tami Hoag book. I'm a very picky reader, and don't give praise easily, so I'm puzzled as to why so many readers absolutely hated this book. Was it rewritten prior to its re-release? Or are most readers looking for straight suspense (which is what Hoag writes now) and disappointed to discover that this book is a romantic suspense?

I'll admit that I wasn't crazy about the hero. He was a little flat. But I have to disagree with some people's estimation of the heroine. Anybody who believes that Elizabeth Stuart is a typical romance heroine hasn't read much romance. As a matter of fact, I think the heroine is why I liked the book so much. She was flawed, in-your-face bold, and not afraid to call a spade a spade. She might have been beautiful, but she was far from pristine. Elizabeth was all raw edges and false bravado that covered an inner vulnerability, and she was what kept me reading.

My two cents worth. Just wanted to point out that not everybody hated this book...some of us loved it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Was this Mills & Boon?
This was truly appalling! All the characters were two dimensional and the plot was completely transparent. This is in fact a cheap romance masquerading as a thriller. Very disappointing and I would not recommend that anyone buy this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Waters
This was the first book I read of Tami Hoag's. I got it when it first came out, it is still the best thing that she has ever written. A great who-done it, single parents with teenaged children and a hot romance. Elizabeth and Dane are great. Dane even gets a mention in Guilty as Sin. ... Read more

Book Description

Zoe is an interior designer with a unique sense of style. But even more uncanny is her sense of what's going on under the surface, the secrets a house can hold.

At the moment, though, Zoe isn't concerned about a client's space. She's more worried about what's going on in her own house in Whispering Springs, Arizona, where she lives with her new husband, private investigator Ethan Truax. After a whirlwind courtship, and a dangerous adventure, they've gambled on commitment, hoping that their powerful attraction can help them learn to live together despite their utterly opposite personalities.

But newlywed life is suddenly interrupted when a shadowy figure from Zoe's past shows up in Whispering Springs, and her closest friend is put at terrible risk. For Zoe and Arcadia Ames share a shocking secret. And as they seek to protect the truth, they must join together, and with Ethan's help, accept a very dan-gerous dare.

4-0 out of 5 stars lighter Light and Shadow - not enough romance
I adored JAK's Light in Shadow - the first in the Whispering Springs Novels. The characters were crisp, witty and it was JAK at her best.

This is not.

Not that it is bad. It's just this is in the pattern of her recent trilogies of books. One really good and then two weaker continuation of the same story. I really hoped since Light and Shadow was so strong that she would break that curse. I love JAK - she is one of my favourite writers, but I do feel let down by these weaker part 2 and 3 of her JAK and Quick efforts of late. Only the Eclipse Bay books were as good all the way through. In paperback, maybe you would grump less, but at hardback prices her fans deserver a little bit more.

When we last saw the Whispering Hills gang, it was just a month early. Ethan Truax, PI, had married Zoe Luce to stop Zoe's brother-in-law from trying to pop her back in to the high-priced Candle Lake Manor Psychiatric Hospital. The bluff had worked and the mystery - who killed Zoe's husband - was solved. Zoe's fellow escapee from Crystal Lake - Arcadia was now living with Harry, Ethan's PI friend. Neither Zoe or Arcadia had mental problems, but Crystal Lake specialised in hiding rich people's "embarrassments" - for enough money they quietly keep the problemsome relative away from prying eyes. However, in Arcadia's case, she was actually hiding from a husband, and deliberately checked herself into Crystal Lake. Grant Loring tried to kill her. She figured her husband would never look for her at an institute for the mentally ill.

Arcadia suddenly fears, Grant's still alive - not dead from a skiing accident as reported - and that he has now decided to come after his wife who has too much information on him. She fears her "new" identity has been compromised.

But the whole gang, for one reason or another is uneasy. It's November, the month Ethan's brother was murdered, leaving Ethan, Bonnie, his sister-in-law, and his two nephews dealing with the grief. Ethan also is concerned about his marriage. He jumped at the chance to use the excuse of protecting Zoe, when he really wanted to marry her. Now, he fears she may be having second thoughts. Zoe is having seconds thoughts, but not because of love. She loves Ethan, but he refuses to believe Zoe is psychic, just chalks up her "gift" to good intuition. She feels if he cannot accept WHAT she is how can he love her? This is a sticking point, especially when she starts running into "spider webs" of dark emotions somehow connected to Crystal Lake. But those worries, take a back seat when someone tries to kill Ethan. Is it connected to his brother's death? Connected to Zoe's stay at Crystal Lake? Or the con man that Ethan exposed?

Frankly, this books is a pleasant read, with some really fine JAK's humour, but on the whole, she once again has too many story lines going all at once - to hide there is not much of a mystery (Smoke and Mirrors problem). The romance between Zoe and Ethan gets pushed aside as it become the "Gang's" Story. It's like JAK has lost the heart to write romance, so she covers it with food, food and more food (Quick's Don't Look Back's Problem).

This is enjoyable, diverting, and will please fans, but they would do well to wait for paperback. Then you won't feel so let down.

The same complaints I see from other readers concerning her last half dozen books - thin mysteries, too many story threads and not enough romance on the leads - seems to be a trap JAK is falling into over and over again.

2-0 out of 5 stars better books
I know this is supposed to be intellectual fluff. The book equivilent of TV to be read when you don't want to be challenged, and I accept it as such. I don't know if she has just gotten complacent, ran our of time, or what?

I have read several of her books under one of her other pseudonyms Jayne Castle, and I expect better writting and story development. If you like this type of book try reading Orchid, After Glow, or After Dark, published under that "other" name instead.

1-0 out of 5 stars PURE TORTURE!!
I elected to listen to the unabridged audio version of this book. Boy, it was full of fluffy dialogue that had nothing to do with the "plots". A few action scenes squeezed in between boring interaction between the characters. It got painful to listen to every detail the character did while speaking. Do we really need to know that she opened the car door, took the grocery bag out, closed the car door, walked 3 steps to the green gate, etc. It went on and on. Maybe actually reading the book wouldn't have been so bad.

Or maybe I should have listened to the abridged version. It could have been condensed to 2 discs!

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Quick Read
Truth or Dare is a good quick read--a pefect companion for a boring waiting room or plane ride. Jayne Ann Krentz picks up right where she left off in Light in Shadow. Zoe and Ethan Truax are still trying to see if their experimental marriage will work, all the while working on their respective careers as interior designer and private investigator. Zoe's friend Arcadia begins to ge the feeling she's being watched and the romantic thriller takes off. The pacing in this novel is a little off--the main conflict is resolved with about 50 pages left of the novel, and suddenly, there is another conflict that wasn't really hinted at earlier. That, though is my only complaint about this enjoyable read.

2-0 out of 5 stars The center cannot hold
... because there IS no center. The plot wanders, the characters talk too much about nothing important, and they all seem dead from the neck in both directions. Very disappoinging. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An OK Read
I read the book in two sittings. Easy read. Not the most profound book I have ever read but I think I would have enjoyed it much better if it did not have the "cajun" talk and the "baby" talk. It was just plain silly. I know children cannot pronounce many words but give me a break. And when the adults talked like the baby, especially the mother, that just killed me. I don't think it's a memorable book. But I enjoyed it none the less. I would recommend it "IF" there was nothing else around to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Silly Favorite
My favorite romances always have an element that makes me laugh, and this book definitely delivers. It is one of my all time favorites. I've re-read this book so many times that the cover is falling apart. I can hear Emma's southern drawl as I read it, and the characters are wacky and funny as they fall in love. It has a little suspence tying the story together. If you want a light hearted romance to spend a few fun hours with, consider this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars New "Awlins" Drawl + Excessive Baby Talk = Gritted Teeth
This had the potential to be a good book. I like that the hero is not perfect. He had scars on the outside as well as the inside. However, I just couldn't finish reading it because of the excessive focus on Emma's baby. Pages of dialogue were taken up by baby talk. I've got nothing against children in a romance novel, but they shouldn't take up as much space in the dialogue as the hero & heroine do. Also, Andersen paints Gracie (the 3-year-old) as an ideal child, much in the same vein as a Disney character. It's totally unrealistic.

Besides this annoyance, there's also the heroine's accent. I notice that Andersen has a tendency of overkill on the accent thing. She did this in one of her other novels (I think it's PRESENT DANGER, but I can't be sure). I come from down south and, unless New Orleans is drastically different, I don't know anyone who says "y'all" to someone's face when they mean you. Y'all is when you're addressing or discussing a group of people. Andersen would have been better off just throwing in a few words with regularity that hint at the southern accent. Instead, every other word out of the heroine's mouth is spelled in a way that screams "I'm a southern stereotype."

In fact, these two things bothered me so much that I didn't finish reading the novel. I guess that says a lot too. If it was really edge-of-my-seat interesting, I would have overlooked those two annoyances and finished it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even Elvis fans will like this book!
This is the first book I've read by Susan Andersen and I was NOT disappointed. Emma and Grace Melina ("Baby Beans") are on the run from an overbearing guardian who has a dark secret. Emma's car breaks down outside of Port Flanery and inside the town, Emma and Grace meet Sheriff Elvis ("Elbis"), their soon-to-be protector. And then the adventure, and yes, a little fun begins. The climax - when the guardian, Grant, catches up with Emma and Grace, will keep you glued to the pages!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read!
This was an excellent story! The hero's name, Elvis, was a bit of a turn off for me as I'm not a big fan of "The King" but I soon found myself not caring what he was called. The story was fast-paced and exciting. The heroine was smart and assertive, the daughter was cute as a button, and the hero (even with a few scars) was definitely someone I wouldn't mind meeting! Susan Andersen has many other good books, so check out some of her other titles! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars fine Athena Academy graduate thriller
Athena Academy graduate Kim Valenti of NSA is terrific in breaking codes and has helped other agencies' staff like FBI bomb expert Alexander Tanner with her skills.Though they never met, Kim and Alex have a thriving email repertoire with hopes that one day Windtalker2 and Lex Luther as they respectively sign their electronic correspondence will meet.

That day occurs when both are assigned to a joint task force looking into Q'rajn terrorist group activities tied to Berzhaan. They are to work together to determine whether known terrorist Fathi bin Amen Mansour or apparently clean Professor Hafiz abu Malik Abd-Humam is planning an attack on western soil.Though Fathi has used his Oxford educated chemical engineering skills to enact revenge for the deaths of his mother and brothers, he holds the west culpable and Hafiz has only written articles demanding the west leave his country, the two Federal agents know either or both could be the suspect and are assigned to take out the right one.

The Athena Academy graduates continue to provide action-packed romantic suspense thrillers that grip the audience from start to finish.Kim is a fabulous alumni as she works with and falls in love with Alex, who reciprocates having been three quarters in love just on their email exchanges. The terrorist aspects are handled with dexterity so that the audience receives a fast-paced tale in which a mistake could cost more than your life; it could cost the lives of numerous innocents.Fans will want to know which way the wind is blowing during the COUNTDOWN to a terrorist attack with Kim and Alex trying to abort it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adventure and Romance all in one............................
Eli is looking for a rough and tumble mercenary who can rescue his brother out of Central America before they kill his brother. He never expected Ray to walk in the door, a beautiful couldn't get her confused with a mercenary even if you tried woman. She had millitary experience and had done this before; rescuing americans from kidnappers.

Ray wants to keep things very business like since she can sense the chemistry between Eli and herself and she doesn't need any complications but Eli has other ideas. Once in the jungle one thing leads to another.

Now that they have taken care of all their business in Central America something unexpected has happened and Ray and Eli have to work it out.

I really liked this book. It definitly lives up to a Lori Foster novel. The characters are very well developed and have lots of depth. This book has several twists and turns once the rescue and sex takes place. Romance waites for them in the states read the book and find out what.

Very warm book with lots of things to keep you going..

5-0 out of 5 stars Unexpected Is Fantastic
Eli Conners has requested for the meanest mercenary that the agency has available. He needs help in rescuing his younger brother from a dangerous situation in Central America. The merc he gets literally takes his breath away. Ray Vereker is not your ordinary mercenary, for one thing, she is a woman. Her looks and delicate features are deceiving. Ray has sharp skills and knowledge to take on any man or woman. Ray can handle any situation but she didn't plan on this amazing attraction to Eli. Eli makes her feel and see things that she has never let into her life before and it scares her more then any mission.

Eli realizes a woman like Ray comes along once in a lifetime. He really has his work cut out for him trying to convince her that they have what it takes to make it as a couple. Add to that mix, now there is a baby on the way, which really makes their situation more interesting.

Lori Foster has another hit on her hands. This story has such depth and passion. It sizzles and will make you laugh out loud. This book is a must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Fun,
I thought Unexpected by Lori Foster was really fun to read. Actually, it was so much fun I have read it two times already! This Book Is A Keeper!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally... a heroine just as tough as a hero
For once there's a female lead who can stand toe to toe with the male lead and not come off as obnoxious or unlikable. I love reading romance and it isn't always easy to keep myself from wanting to throttle a wimpy, foolish female "heroine." Lori Foster's Ray is no simpering, weak fool. She can definately hold her own in any situation and that's what I loved most about this book, not to mention the steamy love scenes! Ray is a nice mix of strong and vulnerable. I highly recommend this book because it's not often you find a strong female protagonist who can throw-down in a fight or in the bedroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars I liked it!
I don't know why so many people didn't like this book??? I enjoyed the heck out of it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars terrific romantic suspense
After being court-martialed and receiving a bad conduct discharge from the navy for striking a superior officer, Kai returns to her grandmother's home on the Qualloah Eastern Cherokee Nation in North Carolina to lick her wounds. She is bitter that the navy didn't believe she was defending herself from a sexual assault. Her grandmother has her go on a vision quest and she dreams she must find one of the secret totems that were stolen from the tribe. The dream shows her she must go to the Australian Outback to meet with an aborigine shaman.

Her grandmother convinces her that she was chosen to return one of the totems and she must go to Australia because her dreams are a method of communication between shamans. Morgan Trayhern's organization Perseus agrees to fund her mission provided she partners with her childhood friend Jake Carter. Although she is turned off by men, she has no choice but to agree to the condition. The two fly to the outback where they find adventure, danger and the possibility of a lasting love.

Lindsay McKenna is a brilliant author who writes romances that are action packed and character driven. In DAUGHTER OF DESTINY the audience will empathize with the heroine who had a physically abusive father and grew up determined to be strong so that no man would hurt her again. The hero, who has loved her since he was a child, tries to prove to her that not all men are predators and he is deserving of her trust and love. If this book is any indication, the Bombshell line is going to be a smashing success.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Way To Start A Series!!!
This read which happens to be the first in the "Moonstruck Series" deftly combines, suspense, romance, humor, and a strong spiritual message into a well rounded story that will have readers anticipating the next in the series.

Ms. Windsor has penned a very good character driven read.Caroline and Blaine are truly wonderful characters and her use of wit and humor helped to make them very real for the reader. These are not "perfect people" and as a result it was easy to see and believe that these two people were able to find love a second time around with each other. This is a read that I highly recommend you not miss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful tale of second love!
Linda Windsor has a winner in "Paper Moon," Book One of the Moonstruck Series from WestBow Press.

Caroline Spencer is the divorced mother of 16 year-old Annie who, along with her best friend, Karen, want to take a school trip to Mexico. Naturally, they need chaperones, and Caroline joins them on the trip designed to promote family togetherness.

Blaine Madison barely makes the plane to join the school sponsored trip.Traveling with a group of Christian teenagers and their parents to Mexico makes Blaine feel uncomfortable. After all, he lost his faith in God after his wife died. But it will give him an opportunity to spend time with his daughter, Karen.

When he's seated next to Caroline on the plane, her natural humor has the stressed out Blaine smiling for the first time in ages. Then, the night of their arrival in Acapulco, the kids visit the disco club, Banditos, where no liquor is served. There his daughter Karen meets John Chandler, a senior at the University of California in Mexico City, and Blaine's parental instincts get into high gear. It's not only the difference in ages between his daughter and the college student that make him suspicious. There's something about John just doesn't sit right with him.

Unbeknownst to the travelers, John is involved in a ring of thieves who steal priceless stamp collections, meant to be sold abroad. John's goal is to find a naïve target: someone to mail the card carrying the stolen property from the States. Despite the rule of not accepting packages, Karen falls prey to John's request.

As the school group tours Mexico, Blaine finds himself turning to Caroline for help in understanding his daughter. The spiritual depth behind Caroline's words eases the guilt Blaine feels over the loss of his wife, and also helps bridge the gap between father and daughter. And Caroline finds herself attracted to the handsome, lonely widower. As the days pass, her attraction for Blaine continues to grow.

But when John discovers that Karen has lost the envelope he gave her, and then Karen and Annie disappear, Blaine blames Caroline. Caroline trusts in God to keep the girls safe. But is Blaine ready to give God - and Caroline - a second chance?

Linda Windsor has won numerous awards for her novels, including historical and contemporary romances, and after reading "Paper Moon," I can see why."Paper Moon" is filled with adventure, suspense, marvelous humor and great sensitivity. To say I eagerly look forward to her next release is an understatement. This is definitely a not-to-be missed book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hot, hot, hot!
Hot desert locale, hot scenes fraught with excitement, and lovemaking hot enough to warm my blood as I read. Spike is a delicious hero. An ultra-masculine operative of the SDDU Defense Unit, who puts his life on the line to keep America safe. Talk about high stakes--no less than the fate of the world rests on Spike's muscular shoulders. At first, he sees Abigail as an extra burden, but in her own way, she's as strong as he. She has sacrificed comfort and safety in order to teach life skills to the orphans of a small desert village.

Sacrificing her singlehood is another matter, but she does it when she realizes it's the only way she can continue her life's work. The sudden marriage is just the start of a rollicking adventure yarn full of excitement and passion. Together, the couple fight the elements and terrorists, but they can't fight their attraction for each other.
