A Deep Solution to a Wider Problem
Ms. Shamblin's food research has turned up a real answer to an age-old question. Not too amazingly, God has quite an opinion on this topic. Those who desire to live "by the Book" (and to be free of excess poundage once and for all) will find great hope and much help in her textbook. A "thinking person" cannot miss the depth and clarity of God's heart in this matter. The reality of her findings closely mirror most Biblical teachings--too simple of an approach to be taken seriously by the proud. After managing fitness centers for years, watching people struggle with weight problems, and battling with it myself, I cannot express how grateful I am to Ms. Shamblin for taking the time to search out every passage in the Bible that deals with food, eating, and God's wonderful plan for making it work in the real world. What a refreshing and sound approach to keeping weight in check in a society where being "on a diet" FOREVER is both depressing and unrealistic. Super book!

Why aren't Christian's healthier????
Must be all the pot lucks? We need to keep our inheritance and keep good care of our temples. this book will help. I also like Jordan Rubin's "Maker's Diet" and Pastor Henry Wright's "A More Excellent way", which talks also about the spiritual casues for weight gain.

Cults are as Cults do
If you could take the diet principles away from Gwen Shamblin and the Remnant church, then you might have something worth supporting. Unfortunately - she has become the idol of the church - and the church lives a cultish existence. Best not to get involved.

It Works!
The title of my review is true! I am a former Weigh Down coordinater and a number of years back lost all my weight on this program! I loved Gwen's teachings and they brought me so much closer to God. Now a few years later I find she has left her church and started her own(The Remnant)It clearly states on her website that if you are not obediant to God you will not be saved.There is no Grace in her message.We are saved by grace not by works lest any man should boast.I am saddened by this change because this program had the capacity to help lots of people but due to her blatant twisting of the Word of God I must and with profound sadness no longer support her book, teachings or program. The better alternative is Judy Halliday's Thin Within. I've tried every diet and always come back to this one
I started this diet in 1997 and went to the classes in addition to reading the book. I lost 5 lbs that time,but every time I would try other diets such as pills, shakes, etc I always came back to Gwen's teachings. Most recently I have lost 15 lbs from eatting when hungry and stopping when full and reading Gwen's book about praying to God for my needs when I want to overeat or eat when not hungry. I've had a weight problem all my life and I'll be 35 this year. I've been on anti depressants off and on thru out my life and those contributed to my weight gain. I couldn't lose the weight until I was off of Paxil. Most recently I tried Slimfast once again and I was so hungry and miserable I finally decided that there is no quick fix and go back to the teachings of Weigh Down because it does work. It's really up to you. It can work quicker if you are faithful to your own hunger cues. Like Gwen had said on one of her tapes, you may not win every battle, but you have to fight it. ... Read more

The Undergrad E&M Standard for Greatness.
Interesting. Insightful. Conceptually Complete. Great Mathematical Notation. Great Explanations. All of these and more could be said about David Griffiths' incredible book on Introductory E&M. David's writing style is next to none, the text is never boring and extremely insightful. The various chapters are structured extremely well. It "flows" extrodinarily well from section to section. He conveys very well the enormous and far reaching applicability of the science of E&M.
Griffiths often uses physical arguments by analogy instead of mathematical rigour to convey many physical ideas. He treats the math like it should be treated in physics, as a language to work with ideas, not as a hindrance blocking their meaning. His mathematical notation is so completely natural and reader friendly, you get used to it very quickly. The examples are insightful and the problems, while challenging, are well thought out.

Every diamond has its fault, and this textbook's fault is its lack of a student solutions manual and answers in the back. However, the quality of writing GREATLY overwealms this fault, hence the 5 star rating. With this textbook, a good instructor, and a little hard work, you WILL learn E&M.

Cool and informal
This introductory book on Electrodynamics is one of the coolest and informal books I have ever read in my student life. I have used the book as an undergraduate and I still use it even now in my post-graduate study. The physical insights offered by the author in almost all the chapters are invaluable and interesting.Problems in Electrodynamics can be mathematically very demanding, but the book stands on it's own feet and the mathematical background required to use the book is more or less sufficient. The exercises are well thought-out /collected,but a major source of irritation is the lack of solutions or even answers for that matter. Dr Griffiths should understand that an elementary treatise such as this is used by a good proportion of the student community (who do not always have contact with a good teacher) for self-study. Such students need someone to hold his hands and be led into such an interesting area of classical physics. Moreover, when Landau can offer offer solutions to the problems in his Course of Theoretical Physics, Dr Griffiths shouldn't mind giving hints and solutions to the problems. If the author doesn't want to share the solutions in the textbook, a solutions manual should be sold in the market. However, a solution manual is available,from the publishers, but only for teachers who should be able to solve the problems on their own. Even many teachers have privately admitted the problems are beyond their capacity without suitable hints. So, how can the author expect students to solve most of the problems on their own? I have seen many students not following the book, precisely due to lack of solutions , and due to that I can only give four stars out of five. Also, the author needs to dispense with the idea of introducing new concepts in the exercises. But if one forgets that, I would say, the book is surely raccommended to beginners and a good book to start with before graduating to Jackson.

What the hell is this?
This book sucks. Griffths, if you can spend your most time typying FREE solution manual for instructors, and let them cut and copy it and scan them on to their class website, why don't you offer students a solution manual. Why do we have to spend 100 bucks for this thing. I really don't understand the people that wrote GOOD reviews about this book. no answers in the back. skip steps in examples, the author is trying to punk you.

Positives & Negatives
I'll begin with the NEGATIVES because there are fewer:

- No solutions and difficult end-of-chapter problems for some of the chapters make it very difficult to use this outside of a class
-Examples are good but they ill-prepare you for the end-problems

POSITIVE
-Very easy to read
-Good descriptions and explanations of phenomena
-Good simple examples with straightforward solutions (would like more)

Overall, I give it a 4/5. It's the first book I've used to study E&M beyond basic physics and I was mostly happy.

The best around.
This book is wonderful. I used it for a 1 year junior-level course at UERJ and I can say it was perfect.

I really don't understand the people that wrote bad reviews about this book. First of all, they seem not to understand that this book is AN INTRODUCTION. There exist excellents books on advanced material (Jackson, Schwinger...), but I doubt anyone has begun with those.

Some of those reviewers say that the math in the book is too elementary. So what? This is a EM course, not a Mathematical Physics one. If you want to struggle with Bessel or others horribles special functions, get Griffiths problems and change them by yourself so that the eigenfunctions are those you want. If you want Green's function, go ahead, you can solve lots of Griffiths' problems with it. But this is not the point. This is a physics book, and the discussion on the fenomena are very good. In my opinion the math used is that you do need to understand the physics.

Other constant complaint is the lack of problem solutions saying that without them you cannot know if you're learning. Well, particularly, it didn't bother me. The problems are very well selected and cover a wide range of difficulty. The easy ones should tell you if you're doing well. And, despite of what others have said, the problems make this a very good book for self-studying.

Finally, I don't understand the complaints about Griffiths' colloquial style. Some other (well celebrated) authors share the same informal writing style and everybody call them genious. This book must be the most organized reference book I have ever used. Its so fulfilling to be able to find exactly what you're looking for when you need it. Includes a common name index, chemical formula index, as well as registry numbers, therapeutic categories for drugs, useful tables, and organic chemical equations. highly recommended!

While not the first reference book I would recommend for a general library, it is certainly one a library or chemist's office shouldn't be without.

This is an encyclopedia, with abstracts on zillions of chemicals. Is this the most authoritative book on the planet? No. If you want that, go read Chem Abstracts.

If you want an handy reference which will give you a pointer in the right direction for information on chemicals/drugs/biologics, then this is for you.

Got chloroform in your waste water and wondering how it might have inadvertently developed from miscellaneous stuff dumped down the drain? Wow - acetone + bleach powder catalyzed with sulfuric acid = chloroform, with citations.

Not always the most useful, but definately a good resource.

personally, I think that this index has the most innacurate information available. It never has what most people need and it's too hard to use.

Bible for chemists and chemistry students
This is the most important and useful chemistry book for chemists and advanced level organic chemistry students. It shows all the physical constants, structures, information about synthesis, toxicity and use and reference. Although there are a few sites that provides the free online Merck Index, if you are into organic chemistry, it is not a bad idea to buy this one. Not The Best, Not the Worst
I used this as a text book for three semesters of University education. Some chapters are fine and quite readable, and others are random and completely lack organization. Some chapters take one point and beat it into the ground with a large baseball bat made out of lead, others mention something once and assume you understand it completely.

The examples are fair but compared to some of the chapter end questions you'd scarcely believe that they came from the same book, the difficulty varies greatly. As for the explanations even the best in this book I did not find as well stated or helpful to understanding as those found in Tipler's "Physics for Scientists and Engineers." Buy this book if you are taking a class and they require you to use it, buy it not if you are trying to learn physics on your own, as I doubt it will help you very much unless you already know it.

Highly overrated
Alright, so of course this is the book required by just about every college in the country these days in their introductory physics courses---well, it shouldn't be. The authors certainly provide mathematical motivation for the concepts they cover, but certainly don't give adequate real-world motivation for concepts. Oh yeah, so, as one idiot reviewer who thinks he's some kind of precocious student said, this book helped him and his high school buddies get fives on the AP Test---WELL BIG DEAL IDIOT!!! GOOD FOR YOU!! I only managed to do that in my freshman year of highschool so I guess it must be really hard or something--*cough* Well, in the real world of people who actually know anything about physics or math or any field, getting a five on the AP exam in highschool isn't anything special. Basically, this book will prepare you to pass exams and standardized tests--it won't give you understanding. For that, go somewhere worthwhile---for example, the Feynman Lectures on Physics, all three volumes of which cost about half as much as Halliday and Resnick's book.

is this a money-making gimmick or what?
Our physics department decided to switch to this book last year, and I have been trying to figure out which edition to buy.. "extended enhanced problem edition", "extended", "enhanced"? How about throwing in a student's companion text that contains "chapter extensions?"? What about getting the right Solutions manual? only 30% of the solutions are in it? And now I just found out they have published (another?) new 7th edition which no doubt will have a brand new array of essential supplements and extensions. Why all these editions and supplements?

Average text, but costs too much
This is an average text, which means there are things about this book that are both good and bad. Let me begin with the good. "Fundamentals" is a fairly rigorous text. There are many topics contained in this book and each topic is covered in adequate depth and there are a large number and variety of problems to solve for each topic. Also, like any good calc-based physics text should, it introduces vectors early and sticks with the use of vectors and vector components throughout the text.

There are, however, some bad aspects to this book. The biggest problem with this text (and most others) is it's terse treatment of inertial reference frames. A more indepth examination of reference frames would probably reduce student frustration later on when solving problems.

My other big gripe with this book is its outrageous cost. $140 is just too much for a text. My suggestion is this, if you're enrolled in a physics course that requires this text, just check out an intro physics book from your library if you can. If you're autodidactic, look into Dover Thrift books. You can get a physics text there with all the same material for about 1/7th the cost of "Fundamentals".

NEGATIVE 5 STARS
This book, and it's complimenting e-grade system has made Physics the worst experience of my college life thus far. The problems are confusing, the grammar is very poor, and the book lacks organization. The worst thing is the e-grade system. Picky and ungodly slow, it has frustrated hundreds of students, as well as their professors. I found myself at the tip of anger when it took me over 5 hours to complete an assignment, simply because the pages took around 5-10 minutes to load.

Required for a semester, but keeps for a lifetime
Overall, I found this text to be chocked full of helpful knowledge. I was required to purchase this book for a course I took in beginning nutrition, but I will keep it forever because of the wealth of knowledge. The concepts are suburbly explained and illustrations make understanding the information easier. Even though most people buy this for a class, I believe it is easy to read and assimilate the information. The Appendices are chocked full of useful facts about the current diet and exchange lists, including food pyramids and such.

The only information I disagree with is the section on vegetarianism. Surely they could have done a better job and included more than four pages! However, there are plenty of books dedicated solely to vegetarians/vegans that would be more important and informative.

It would also have been nice to see more updated information on fad diets such as Atkins or South Beach with respect to health issues. Or even more recent scientific studies throughout the book would contribute significantly to the reading.

Since the 2004 edition is just coming out, if you can pick up a cheap copy of this edition it is well worth the investment.

A Very Balanced Nutrition Textbook
This is a balanced nutrition textbook that combines the concepts of nutrition with exercise, disease states that are caused by nutrition deficiencies, eating a balanced meal, glycolysis cycle and other concepts. This book also has helpful tables in the inside cover of the book and all throughout the chapters of the book.

What makes this book so good is that it goes beyond a textbook. This book can also be used by any individual looking to find ways to eat healthier, lose weight and exercise. This book goes beyond the expectations of a learning textbook and that is what makes this nutrition textbook so good. Of course its primary use is as a textbook for the professor to teach basic concepts of nutrition to its students but IMHO, it can be used for more than that.

Additonally, this book makes the concepts easy to understand to the point that any person can follow the concepts easy. The infotract CD was also helpful as well.

In all for a book that is primarily focused on the concepts of nutrition, it goes beyond its primary focus. It is a great book. Sometimes I wonder if the officials at Jenny Craig Weight Loss Centers fashion their diet plans by just using this book and charge you a ton on money. With this book anyone can eat more healthy and you won't have to spned a ton of money at Jenny Craig Weight Loss centers to do it

Easily digestible
I loved reading this book as the language used is very attractive.Information introduced in a very reader friendly way and different colours are used to stop you falling asleep.This book explains even tiny things and avoids complicated pionts by referring the in depth reader to Appendices at the back of the book.I recommend this book for any body intrested to get significant information in a short time.This book is very useful and easily digestible specially if English is not your first language.

understandable for a difficult subject!
Although I found this subject much harder than I anticipated, the manner in which Whitney wrote the subject helped me understand the material. I have learned much more than I had thought I would.

An awesome book for the above average reader.
This book is very interesting. It has extensive amount of information about everything you ever wanted to know about nutrition. From tables that display the amount of vitamins and minerals your body needs to information of various food items (ie. calories, fats, protien, etc.), this book is for you. Gaining a little to much weight? This book could be a cheaper version of a dietician. However, you may not find this interesting if your english skills are not up to par. Important work if one understands its place
This is an important work, helping to document the validity of herbal medicine. However, it is not an all-encompassing work and obviously isn't referenced. Nevertheless, the German Commission E's method of publishing monographs based on the information gathered from companies, researchers, and practitioners (but apparently kept confidential) serves a useful purpose. It is always helpful to consult this text to get some solid conformation for common traditional uses. Every practitioner and researcher should have this book, though it certainly cannot be used in a vacuum.

Huge Disappointment!
I had hoped this book could be my benchmark for herbal information. What I found was a book that was hard to use with little useful information. ... Otherwise, Facts and Comparisions' Review of Natural Products is a better choice.

The Most Solid and Dependable Work on the Market
I have worked with herbs for many decades and have shelves and shelves full of works on Herbs and Healing. The German Commission E Monographs is still an often used Reference that in my oppinion belongs on everyone's shelf who works with Herbs. True, it does not cover all that the herbs are capable of and due to lack of proof, many wonderful herbs are not approved, BUT, and this is most important, whatever you find in this book is scientifically proven and you can believe it. I VERY strongly recomend this book, and the CD as well. Whenever you explore a new herb, or need to know facts, check it out in the Commission E Monographs. Then you have a very good outline from where you can start to work with, and together with other herbals get to know and experiment to arrive at your own conclusion. And that is not to mention the inclusion of interaction with other drugs, side effects, mode of administration, active composition for each monograph and different chapters that cover all that is important. A MUST for every practitioner and professional. A MUST for Everyone involved in healing, period. If you can only buy one book on herbs, I would recomend this one. Herbs are gentle and effective healers as a rule. That does not mean that when handeled and prescribed wrong they can't be fatal and dangerous as well. Due to a long time of suppression, there's much information that is doubtful at best, plain wrong and harmful at worst. So even if it's not always approving old favorites, and not mentioning all properties of all herbs, it is an amazing work. Non Nonsense and you can count on everything it says to be true. Five Stars? No way, but that's the maximum available. I would give it many more if I could. But YOU be the judge. Check it out for yourself in a store if in doubt. But don't let this work pass you without giving it a chance. It is truly a treassure.

WHERE ARE THE REFERENCES?
The monographs lack any sort of scientific references. A true reference manual should list references so the reader can verify the conclusions made.

Wow! A Terrific Reference based on years of research
I love this book. I have yet to come across such a comprehensive manual that covers all of what we know about herbs to date. The German Commission E has been the leading group to study and report the beneficial effects and bad side effects, in some cases, of herbs since the 70's. With the explosion of alternative medicine in America, and with everybody and their brother claiming to be a nutritionist or herbalist (whatever that means) and understand herbs, we need a manual like this that tells the truth. This book also standardizes what the appropriate dosages of certain herbs are to help with certain ailments. I don't know about you, but I get a different dosage recommendation on every bottle and from every so called herbalist I meet. This is because the FDA does not require studies to be done on herbs and supplements in the US. Thus, we can only turn to what Germany has been doing for over 20 years to study these wonderful plants, because Germany does require that their use, dosage information and side effects be studied before they can be given to the public. Just because someone claims wonderful benefits from an herb or that it has been used for years does not mean there are no side effects. Marijuana and cocaine are natural and have been used for years too - I think the side effects have been well demonstrated. Surgeon's best friend
If you only have time to read one book, this is the one. Every topic is boiled down to only the pure gold. All the useless facts that you can't remember anyway are left out. Presented in an easy to understand, easy to remember format. This is really all you need. I plan on reading every new issue when available. By the way, I've read Schwartz, Norton, Sabiston, and ACS over the past few years. All are good, but I already work long enough hours for my free time to be spent reading such lengthy texts.

Good, But:
This is an easy to read surgery text with up to date techniques and tests; however, there are numerous errors in the text. For the most part they are simple ones, easily reasoned out (i.e. gastric pH decreased with PPIs); but, for a seventh edition this kind of sloppiness calls into question the integrity of rest of the text.

Excellent text overall and in details. Very helpful in everyday practice and in Board preparation.

Must have for boards
This is the book which any surgeon studying for the general surgery oral boards MUST read. It covers a broad range of practical information.

FYI -- When I took my boards, everyone told me to read Schwartz for the written and Cameron for the orals; I did that and passed (I think) easily. Although I think some of the new textbooks such as Dr. Greenfield's give Schwartz a run for the money, no other book challenges Cameron for studying for the oral boards.

A Great Textbook
I teach a university course based on this textbook and I really like it. It is full of mathematics that students can apply readily to everyday situations, without being heavily computational. The problem sets are relevant to the chapter text. Also, the problem sets are divided into three categories ("walking", "jogging", and "running") based on the level of thought that must go into them. The four chapters on statistics and probability are not quite what I'd like them to be, because in my opinion they cover too much statistical ground in hardly any depth. They would be better if they just did some basic statistics and didn't try to get students at this level into normal curves and standard deviations and all that. An excellent mini-reference guide
I am a critical care RN and have been in the business for over 21 years; there are very few critical care texts I haven't seen, and many of them I own.A colleague shared his Tarascon Int. Med. and Crit. Care Pocketbook with me, and I was hooked.In one small volume, easily fitting in a lab coat pocket are all the fun factoids you need on rounds , at the bedside, or when on the phone with the on-call or attending.It touches on all major pathologies you are likely to encounter, and outlines their treatments according to national standards and accepted protocols.For me, it has replaced carrying many of the laminated fact cards I had jammed in my pockets.

The Dark-Horse of Pocket Guides
In contrast to its ubiquitous cousin, the Tarascon Pharmacopoeia, this book is infrequently used and is a relative unknown amongst my colleagues.That's a shame, because this book provides a wealth of useful, easily accessible information.Despite the fact that I carry other databases including my own notes or "peripheral brain" on my handheld, this book provides me with answers I don't find anywhere else.

The information is broad and varied including the bread and butter differential diagnoses of mixed acid-base disorders, to ventilator weaning parameters, PIOPED data, rheumatologic autoantibodies and in what diseases a given antibody is prominent as well as the criteria for fluid analysis of any type (e.g. joint, CSF, pleural, ascites, etc.), EKG criteria et cetera ad naseum.As a quick, information packed reference, it's easily worth the small amount it costs.

One of those books you take with you on a deserted island
.....or if you had to travel back in time. I had this for my textbook in Biology back in 1987 and even then, .... well before the human genome was anywhere near being charted, let alone completed, this was a spectacular acomplishment. This book isn't riveting like say Druyan and Sagan's SHADOWS OF FORGOTTEN ANCESOTRS is, but it is as good as any biology textbook can possibly be. It has EVERYTHING you could possibly want to know about biology; from modern cell theory to ecology. All you have to do is look this over and you'll see why I highly recommend it. Does any other bio textbook even compare?

Best intro to Bio book out there
This is definitely the best intro to bio books out there. As a graduate student I got the chance to read lots of bio books and this one by far is the best. The chapters are well organized and easy to follow and gives you the depth needed to pursue any area of biology. When it was time for me to student teach this was the book of my chose. It expensive but definiely worth it to any biologist. The CD-ROM is also very good!

Outstanding introductoy text
"Biology" by Raven and Johnson is an impressive introduction into the biological sciences for undergraduates and Advanced Placement high school students. This text is particularly strong on evolution, sociobiology, ethology, and genetics, and does an outstanding job of presenting evolutionary theory as the unifying theme of all the biological sciences. Very Useful
Jordan and Jon made me think about the science the way it appears on the real MCAT. I don't know why everyone says that they're not funny. I thought they were hysterical for the most part. I hope they come out with an Audio Osmosis USMLE. By the way, some people say they are using these CDs without using books. I wouldn't go that far. I used the Examkrackers books and thought they were good too.

Excellent Test Prep
I strongly recommend the MCAT audio Osmosis CD's to anyone who is preparing ot take the MCAT. Whatever intellectual level you are on, these CD's are incredibly helpful. They are very explanatory about all the concepts that will be addressed on the MCAT, and they review them in a creative, interesting way. It is practically impossible to become bored while listening to these because they do a lot of sound effects, real life examples, give insight on the thought process behind the MCAT and how you should approach it, and they approach the hard concepts addressed on the MCAT with a more intuitive approach. In addition, by having two different people teaching it, it is so much more engaging and exciting to listen to. I have personally met Jon Orsay, and trust me, not only does he know what he's talking about, he can communicate his knowledge effectively, and is definitely worth the money.
Also, the convenience of the CD's are very valuable. I listen to them in my car, as well as sitting down and taking notes on them. they fully cover all areas of the MCAT, and I am going to use this solely as my test prep (in addition to some practice MCATS), because it covers al the topics so well. I strongly recommend this product, especially if you don't want to take and expensive prep course.

audio osmosis has only fear to thank for its business. this stuff is garbage, and if it in any way advances your understanding of anything related to the mcat, do society a favor and forget about medical school. otherwise, if you wanna drive someone insane, just tie em up and make them listen to this drivel for a few hours. theyll be beggin for you to kill em. btw, anybody wanna buy audio osmosis?

Excellent of prep for MCAT
These 12 CDs are excellent for prep for MCAT. Because of these CDs, my score went from a 22 (6v, 7ps, 9bs) to a 26 (7v,9ps,10bs). This may not seem like its that good of an improvement, but I did almost no other studying besides listening to these CDs. The physics and gem chem sections are the best because they explain the subjects conceptually, which helps enormously on the real mcat. Very highly recommended.

know your study style and beware sexist jokes
i commute several hours each week to and from school, and work 20 hours a week at a job where i can listen to music, books on tape, or whatever else i want - including these audio osmosis cds. because of that, this is the perfect study product for me, and i've been able to listen to these cds over and over to let the information sink in. if you have this sort of time - commuting or whatever - where you can listen to these cds, then they are absolute best prep material you can use. they turn wasted time into mcat study time. however, if you don't have much time like this *or* you are someone who learns better visually, the cds might not be for you.

overall, the concepts are explained clearly, the jokes (while not always funny) keep the mood light and your attention focused, and the online website is an invaluable resource.

as another reviewer mentioned, there is an undeniable thread of sexism that runs through these cds. it comes out most blatantly in repeated jokes denigrating the intelligence of supposed 'wives' and 'girlfriends', and is enforced structurally by the exclusive use of 'he' to refer to a generic person, or scientist, etc which can make women feel invisible. this may not bother some people (tho, imho, it should). for me, a woman studying for the MCAT, i found the sexist jokes disturbing enough that they throw off my concentration every time one of these sexist jokes comes up. they are unnecessary and totally contrary to jon and jordan's overall philosophy of increasing confidence for MCAT takers. without these jokes, the cds would get 5 stars from me, but as it is, they need to be removed if there ever is a next edition. ... Easy to Read and VERY INSIGHTFUL
If you want to understand some of the "big picture" issues in our society I strongly encourage you to read this book. Peter Drucker's Management Challenges for the 21st Century and Daniel Pink's Free Agent Nation are two other good reads on a knowledge-based economy.

While Mr. Enriquez spends most of the book talking about genomics (his area of expertise and knowledge) and the implications arising from developments in the area, he also tries to illustrate the impact such discoveries might have on the world economy in a very basic, easy-to-understand manner. Mr. Enriquez does an excellent job in talking about the importance of education and how the large differences among certain geographic regions may lead to a larger divergence of wealth in the next century.

In talking about genomics, Mr. Enriquez is quick to talk about cloning and the moral and ethical issues that will arise from such technology and how it will be EXTREMELY TOUGH to policy this technology due to its rapid evolution and ability to move into other countries borders. In the past the evolution of public policy was adjusted with the technologies but genomics is different in that we are talking about the potential to create human life via cloning, which stirs up all kinds of moral and social issues which affects politicians and their voting constituencies.

The one thing I know is that genomics is revolutionizing modern medicine as we breathe today. The new drugs, cures and foods that will be created and these WILL have VERY PROFOUND impacts on our standard of living in the next century and will cause tons of social implications. This book is your entrance into learning about geonomics in a very easy to read book. I highly recommend purchase of the book.

Highly Recommended!
If you read only one book about the looming genetics revolution, As the Future Catches You would be a pretty good pick. After laying a foundation with a basic introduction to DNA and the genetic sciences, Juan Enriquez takes the reader on a tour of the mystifying advances that are putting humans in greater control of their own evolutionary destiny. This book is designed as much to inspire questions as to answer them, and uses a variety of font styles and sizes and almost poetic prose to provoke the thoughtful involvement of the reader. We from getAbstract recommend this book to any reader who doesn't want to let the future catch him off guard.

This book reads like an engaging lecture. If you're looking for an extensive and scholarly work . . . you'll give it a single *. If you're looking for a well written, extended and readable Powerpoint presentation (and I mean that in all seriousness) you'll rate this book much more highly. I was surprised by how light the book was on words/$ but was pleasantly surprised that after I'd adjusted my expectations the book was readable and engaging. And it's significantly less expensive than the thousands Enriquez probably charges to deliver this presentation in person . . .

I am a librarian. We have this book in our collection only because it was given to us for free. I'm not sure what all of the praise is for. It is puzzling to me.

Good, if you like PowerPoint
The most telling phrase was in the afterword: "I apologize for simplifying so many debates and concepts." At least he knew what he was doing.

I found this to be a turbulent stream of factoids, hero worship, and incomplete ideas. The author seems not to distinguish between opening a discussion and failing to finish a thought. The quantitative statements are sometimes incorrect - his decimal points seem to wander as much as the rest of the presentation.

Visually, the text is a mess. Maybe he wanted it to look lively and creative, instead of putting the life into the text itself. His typographic "creativity" tops out around the Crayola level, though. It's what I'd expect of someone who just discovered all those cool controls over fonts, sizes, layout, etc., but has not yet discovered they don't all need to be used on any one page. In fact, this typography interferes with a good reader's perceptual habits. I actually like aggressive use of type, like some of David Carson's - but Carson brings visual competence to the page.

The one graph (p.147) is uninformative even by USA Today standards. It would probably have Tufte spinning in his grave. (As far as I know, Tufte is alive as of this writing - that graph might well kill him.)

Toffler's 'Future Shock' needs continuous replacement, because the future keeps getting here and keeps being something we didn't expect. I'm glad to see people writing about the ever-changing future. A great introductory biochemistry text!
Filled to the brim with useful, concise information, and helpful explanations. It also has very complete coverage of a broad variety of concepts and fields of study of biochemistry. While it can at times get bogged down in the details, it was extremely helpful to me during my biochemistry class, and inspired in me a desire to continue educating myself in the field. I am keeping this book rather than selling it, because I'm certain it will be of great use to me in my further studies in biology and medicine.
