Further adventures with algebra...
This book is currently being used by the community college where I tutor as a book for the internet version of Intermediate Algebra, a course that most of our two-year degree programmes require as part of the mathematics requirement, and one of the most 'popular' courses at the tutor centre. Because this book is used by the internet course, it has to be well crafted to enable students to learn from on their own, and indeed, it seems to pass muster on that account.

The organisation of the book is fairly standard for algebra texts of this level: basic number theory is introduced (which should be a refresher or review from previous basic mathematics or algebra courses), the linear equations and inequalities are introduced, with equations of one variable, some elementary set operations, and the concept of inequalities. The third chapter introduces graphs, with the x-y coordinate axis, two-variable equations introduced. The fourth chapter looks at systems of equations, both in two and three variables, and introduces matrix methodology.

The fifth chapter develops the ideas of exponents, introducing scientific notation and polynomial multiplication and division. This is a prelude to factoring, the subject of chapter six. Trinomial factors, special cases and general approaches are discussed, including the grouping method and trial-and-error.

Chapter seven looks at rational expressions, complex fractions, and applications that build upon the factoring. Chapter eight introduces roots and radicals as a prelude to the quadratic equation in chapter nine. Graphing of functions such as parabolas is developed here.

Chapter ten looks at logarithmic, inverse and exponential functions, leading to analytic geometry topics such as conic sections, nonlinear functions and nonlinear systems in chapter eleven. This include hyperbolas, circles, and ellipses. The final chapter addresses the ideas of series (arithmetic sequences, geometric sequences) and introduces the binomial theorem.

The chapters have group activities at the end of each section that set the mathematics learned in proper 'real world' context. For example, the group activity for chapter eleven on analytic geometry topics deals with finding the paths of natural satellites; other activities include figuring out investments, the progress of disease spreading, the paths of comets, and comparing long-distance charges.

Each chapter comes with a convenient summary, a set of review exercises, and a chapter text. The summaries address key concepts, terms, new symbols introduced, and basic patterns of problems. There are also cumulative review sets after each chapter that address all the previous chapters. The first appendix is an introduction to calculators (there are many types of calculators, so this section is somewhat general, addressing those calculators which use basic algebraic logic in order of operations and other important areas.

The other appendices go into more detail about matrices and determinants (Cramer's Rule) and synthetic division for polynomials, for the ambitious students who wish to understand further.

The text is generally readable and accessible, with colourful pages, well-illustrated graphs and charts as required, and pictures thrown in for good measure and visual interest. The authors employ a six-step method for problem solving (read, assign variables, write equations, solve, state answers, check) at each step in the text. There is a student's solution manual, with detailed solutions to odd-numbered problems (plus others), available; this is where they 'show the work'; the simple answers are found in the back of the book.

Very Good Precalculus Reference
With the sixth edition of this textbook, Sullivan has made significant strides since the fifth edition of the College Algebra portion. The interval notations used to indicate the regions where the value of a function is increasing or decreasing is so much more clear and concise. In contrast to the former use of frequently displaying number lines with pluses and minuses underneath, in which the readings of them were perhaps more of an exercise for the eyes than for the mind, Sullivan revised this mess using parentheses and brackets to indicate test intervals.

As a teacher, I say that this is not the most user-friendly book for an instructor who teaches one hour college algebra classes three times a week. Oftentimes, for me to quickly get the fundamentals across, I have to paraphrase what Sullivan lays out in many of the sections. The language is often too theoretical for several of my students (Many are in non-technical majors but have to complete college algebra as a last mathematics course requirement), and I have to put the symbolic logic sequences into terms that can cross over to applied mathematics. This is not meant to be a criticism, however.

Perhaps the main weaknesses lie in the shortcomings of applied problems, particularly in the sections concerning maxima and minima, and especially in the inequality segments. On a very positive note, however, I will grant that the sixth chapter, which involves logarithms and exponents is quite fascinating. For instance, you have applied problems involving the amount of interest that can be gained after so many years if, say, [money amount]is deposited into an account and accumulates interest at 6% compounded quarterly. Physics problems are also well presented. One interesting tidbit: if you wondered how long it would take for a 300-degree dish to cool down to 100 degrees in an environment that is at room temperature, the formula that can be used, namely Newton's Law of Cooling, is provided. As another example: suppose that a dead animal was discovered in a barn at midnight and its temperature was 80°F° ; the temperature of the barn is kept constant at 60°F; two hours later the temperature of the corpse dropped to 75°F; find the time of death. The formula for this type of problem is also shown.

As added kudos, I especially like the intermittent TI-83 calculator tips. The use of technology in mathematics classes is notably increasing in the community colleges. All in all, this is a finer, more updated version, and it is especially recommended for those who want to go beyond the call of duty and discover new ways of applying mathematics to their daily lives.

1)Michael Sullivan (Sr.) is one of the four or five best writers
of math textbooks on today's scene. If you can find a textbook written by him that fits whatever current math course you are in
buy the book sight unseen. You will be more than happy that you
did.
2)As far as this book is concerned, I used it from chapter 1 to the end (every section of every chapter) and did every problem in
the book. I did not have an instructor and I was not enrolled in a course. I used the book to brush up for calculus after being out of school for 20 years.
3)This book is great for a course in college algebra, trigonometry, or precalculus. It serves all three purposes. I know this because after I finished the text and began studying
calculus, on my own, I was really able to appreciate how well
Sullivan's book prepared me for calculus.
4)The explanations of each concept are clear, not more rigorous
than is appropriate for a student at the level of the textbook,
but certainly not dumbed down.
5)The problems and questions are well written, comprehensive, and
most importantly, instructive. I found that the best question I
could ask myself about every problem in the book was "now what is
Sullivan trying to get me to see by doing this problem or answering this question". I mention this because this is what Sullivan is really good at; he doesn't spoon feed you.
6)Look, we all want essentially the same things from a textbook.
We want clearly written, well illustrated worked out problems
that allow us to grasp the concept in question so that we can use
it to solve problems and answer conceptual questions. With Sullivan, you get this in great measure.
This is a wonderful textbook for both sudents and teachers. It is
a great book to learn from and a great book to learn to teach from.

Well laid out
One feature I really liked about this book was the "Now work on Problem #..." items, which give you a specific exercise to work on in that section to make sure you understand the concept just covered. Also, the author has highlighted certain exercise problems for a suggested practice test. These are great if you already know some of the material you can just breeze through these until you get stuck on something. The paperback solutions manual was also excellent, I used it a lot since I was teaching myself.

This book is NOT the textbook. It is simply the student solutions manual. The textbook is the hardcovered version. It does not come in paperback. This book you are viewing is the student solutions manual ONLY!!! Make sure it's what you want.

A MUST BUY for the future Internist
This book is the Bible of Internal Medicine. Anyone considering a career in medicine should have this book in their library. Comprehensive and well written, it is the gold standard of medical textbooks.

A HIGH QUALITY E-BOOK DENTED BY USE-RESTRICTIONS
HARRISON'S is synonymous with clinical books that worth their weights in gold. This 15th/ed CD-ROM maintained that tradition. It adds the much-needed portability to some 2700-paged heavyweight. However, the air-tight use-restrictions attached to the ...price is simply suffocating. I wish that the publisher had relaxed a bit!
Overall though, there were compensations. The CD contents are superb: far better than what the textbook versions offer. Anyone with interest in medical science should give it a try. It is elaborate and easy to understand. The excellent chapters on pharmacology and infectious diseases are particularly worth mentioning.

It's wonderful book. Keep it up.
I have been reading Harrison's Medicine right from my residency. Its a fabulous book one can refer to as an undergraduate or postgratuate student. However for a practitioner one would prefer to have little more stress on management details. Adding audio to CD of the same book will make it more useful.

excellent text for self-learners and non-freaks
Right after high school, I enrolled in a d.e. course at the local junior college (ok, I was a masochist). We used the Zill text, although not the boundary value problem edition. Needless to say, that book was a godsend b/c the instructor was horrible, so after awhile, I only showed up for class for exams, and self-studied on my own from that book. I recall that the book was fun and easy to understand.

Why is it good? It explains things in clear language. The proofs are laid out clearly. There are lots of example problems with solutions. This was critical in the portion of the book where he explains how to solve d.e.'s with variable coefficients. The book makes differential equations look interesting, which is important to capture readers. Zill also has a calc book, and mygoodness, that book was sort of repulsive b/c of the 70's style printing and the nasty brown colors. Looks are always a big thing, back then and now.

I'm not sure how applicable this text is for hard-core math majors, but definitely, if you are in engineering and don't require any weird esoteric understanding of the proofs that math people might need, this is text worth referring to. I can't comment on the BVP, though... However, it helped me to earn an A+ at Cal that first semester as a freshman, so he must be doing something right.

P's and Q's
Overall a good book; however, it is filled with small, yet significant, errors in the solutions, study manual and a few theorems. These errors though not major may cause confusion serious confusion.

Good book, for the most part.
The problem sets for each section were good. I used this book for Penn State's distance education ODE/PDE class. However, book should be supplemented with lectures, though. The chapter on Cauchy-Euler equations was lacking because it didn't tell you "why can we use this approach to solve these types of equations" (I had to ask my prof to show me why). On the plus side, it did have an intro to PDE's in the latter chapters, and was fairly thorough in the number of techniques covered for solving various types of DE's.

Classic Old Text
This is a book from the old school of ODE's. The absolute focus of this book is analytical methods and beats the algebra and integration drum to the exclusion of anything else. If you want to learn how ODE's were solved 25 years ago then this book is for you. If you are looking for a book that deals with more modern theory, or handles modeling in a constructive manner then this book is NOT a good choice.

I used this book for an online stats with ease.
I did not have the luxary of an instructor guide me through problems and have my questions clarified in class. I took the class online and I had no problem inderstanding how to wrok out the problems. It goes into detail on how to work out problems and gives examples step by step. There are also a lot of practice problems in the text with odd numbers answered for review. The CD in also a great learning advantage with some of the chapters with E-professor. Excellent to walk you through your stats course.

Get this study guide
This is an excellent study guide. It really soldifies the information of microbiology in a concise format that sticks to your brain. However, if you want to know the type of questions asked on microbiology exams, definitely get the following book:

Excellent text for microbiology.
Jacqueline Black truly has a way with with words. She has a very readable textbook. I have chosen this book for my Microbiology class. my students are primarily nursing students. The "extra" information she has included in the text adds a spark of reality to the text.

Not a good book to study with
I taught a course with this book and there are several typo's in the book.

I received my book in 2 days. It was in excellent condition, and included the instructor's cd.

Thinking Mathematically
I ordered this book, and it came faster than I expected it too. However, it was the Thinking Mathematically (Expanded 2nd Edition) Instructor's Edition CD-Rom version. I don't know if thats good or bad, but I already purchased the book from my campus bookstore and everything in this book is the same except for the CD that came with it. All and all its the service was exceptional. You should purchase it here.

Not the hardcover edition..
I needed the book "Thinking Mathematically" for a class. Since I dispise carrying hardcover books on my back, I opted for the (cheaper) paperback version. For anyone who is thinking about going a similar route, please note that the paperback version is not of the hardcover "Thinking Mathematically". This is the STUDENT SOLUTIONS MANUAL. If your class requires this too, as mine did, it's a great book for what it's intended.

This needs to be read by all women everywhere!
This is probably the most life changing book I've ever read. I wish in school as young girls we had known exactly what our body does at menstruation and ovulation. It's amazing.

Not only can this be used for TTC - it can be used to learn how to better utilize birth control methods. Being aware of your basal body temp & cervical fluid you actually know when you are ovulating and when your period is due. Like clockwork!

In addition, having your temps stay high instead of dipping down as your period approaches is indicative of pregnancy achievement. In my case this happened, (preg test to confirm) but unfortunately I wasn't able to hold the pregnancy and my temps started to go downwards -- making my period a couple of days late. If I hadn't have been charting, I would've never known I was pregnant, and just chalked it up to a late period.

This book is good for all women - empowering them to learn more about their amazing bodies!

An amazing book for EVERY woman
After announcing to a close friend of mine who was eight months pregnant that I was about to begin to try to have a baby, I was given a weathered copy of Taking Charge of Your Fertility. I direct a women's health program at a community hospital and was amazed at what I DIDN'T know about my body after reading this book. Toni Weschler is a gifted writer. A public health practitioner's dream, she is extremely clear, distilling scientific facts to manageable pieces of information. She dispels the myth that charting your fertility, traditionally referred to as "Natural Family Planning", is a method used only by a select few who choose natural methods of birth control because of religious beliefs. Moreover, she emphasizes the connection between women's empowerment and knowledge of normal biological processes that are often medicalized to the point of leaving many women mystified. I would go so far as to say this should be required reading for all young women entering high school! (NOTE: I am now in my first trimester as a result of the information provided in the pages of this book. I am very grateful!)

Got Pregnant the Second Month Using This Method!!!!!
I highly recommend this book and method for getting pregnant. I am 39 and had been trying to get pregnant for six months using an ovulation predictor kit. We already have a 2 year old daughter that was conceived the first month we tried, so I was very discouraged that we were not pregnant yet. A friend of mine recommended this book, and I thought it was worth a shot! I found the book a very easy read. I read the sections relevant to getting pregnant in one night (there are also sections on birth control, menopause, etc). I began charting immediately. I did not go crazy with charting-I just recorded my temp each day and checked the other 2 signs (cervical mucus and cervical position) starting about a week before I knew I was going to ovulate. I got pregnant the second month!! The book is super informative about all aspects of a woman's reproductive body. A great read even if you just want to get to know what's going on with your body every month. Hope this review helps!!

GREAT BOOK
Wow!! First of all - I was quite ignorant about my own body until I read this book. I will share this book with my children. I also purchased the software that goes along with it - and IT WORKED SUCCESSFULLY!! I am expecting my first child Dec. 04 !! I did "practice" charting for one month and then the first month that we tried for real - well it happened!! A friend of mine and my cousin both used this book and it helped them as well. I highly suggest this book to anyone who wants to conceive. It really helps you to understand your body. It has some medical terms - but explains them in detail. I also suggest the software - it made it MUCH easier for me!!

You HAVE to read this book
I bought this book for two reasons, to get pregnant after 35 & due to everyone else's review of this book. Now, I'm a believer. If you're a woman and think you know about your body, you don't until you read this book. My whole life I thought there was something wrong with me, and now I know I was normal all along. I wish I would have had this guidance as a teenager and just discovering the intricacies of my body. Just knowing the basics of your body and what's normal & what's not, will give you a confidence you can't imagine. If you have teenage daughters, buy this book and read it together. its a math book
not gonna do back flips for a math book

Pleasently Surprised
I am a college student and the math book that was at the bookstore was $100.00. I went onto amazon.com and found the same book in new condition (looked like)for $56.00. I was kind of weary about ordering on-line for the first time but was pleasently surprised. This was a great first experience and plan on ording all my books through amazon.com.

Fun mathematical Ideas
"Ideas" is the key here as we have calculators, computers, and what not to do any real number crunching or comparing. This book carries you from zero to the edges of most any mathematical discipline. The information in the margins ties the theories back to reality. At the appropriate locations in the margin are postage stamps from around the works are shown commemorating the individual mathematicians and scientists relating to the subject being studied. There is a section in the book with the answers to all the odd questions.

adequate for it's intended use
This book would have been much more useful had it had done a better job of providing clear examples when introducing new material. One advantage of this book was that it could be used for more than one math class, thus cutting down of the student's costs.

Excellent Foundational Text
I have the fifth edition of the text, which is now in its eight edition. This is an excellent book, and it is very entertaining to read--a description that does not fit many mathematics textbooks. Although geared for students without much math background, it is an enjoyable read for all, with its engaging sidebars, its sense of the history, and believe it or not, a sense of humor (for instance, a problem requiring you to create a Venn diagram for the topics of country songs--truckers, prison and love). A a philosopher, it is refreshing that the first 100 pages are devoted to set theory and logic--something that is not focused on often enough in basic courses. Most topics are likewise presented with a philosophical angle--for example, the first page points out the problems with defining "set." Utlimately, all definitions of set are circular--does this make "set" undisputably axiomatic? These kinds of problems are at least implied throughout the text. The effect is as deligtful as it is rare. You are not given the sense that the subject matter is complete, instead you are inspired to solve the dilemmas. While the incompleteness and conundrums are common knowledge to mathematics graduate students, they are not frequently imparted to students taking basic courses. That is a shame. When I was in high school, I felt turned off from math--as did many of my friends, because it was presented as a dry, static subject. Memorizing formulas and theorems was like memorizing the Gettysburg Address. Waiting Patiently
I'm on day 7 of the fast and I am feeling sick....weak and experiencing nausea. However, I'm sticking with it. I had a headache for a couple of days but that has subsided. My sister and her husband went on the fast,and raved over it. They did not experience any of the side effects I encountered. I think that is because they don't eat meat, have done a fast before and are more active than I. Is that telling me something? I am having several bowel movements consisting of mucous and other debris. I also had a cold (and still do) when I began the fast, so that may have made the fast a little harder on me. I haven't used the sea salt, but use the laxative tea faithfully. I have not once felt hungry and didn't even mind my husband eating a fried fish dinner with all the trimmings in front of me. I can't wait for day 10 to arrive. I just hope I feel all of the energy and relief from my sinus problems. I forgot to mention I've lost 8 lbs. as of today. I plan to adopt a healthy way of eating when I resume eating food again.

irreplaceable tool for a healthy lifestyle, it's my "Bible"
I first discovered the fast in Germany during my travels, but did not know it had a name. I was modeling & needed to lose weight. Another model gave me the formula, but only knew it "through the grapevine". In Europe, a commercialization of the fast is available in health food stores. It comes with a little pack of cayenne and directions, but the syrup is a combo of cane & grade B, which is not as good as organic dark Grade B. Several years ago, a company began marketing "Lemon Fast" in health food stores across the U.S. Again, it is the same as the European version. After researching, I discovered the Burroughs foundation in California and ordered several copies of the book from his daughter. I lost, in all, more than 30 pounds over a period of time. I now maintain a vegetarian/mostly vegan lifestyle and cleanse at least twice yearly for 10 days to 2 weeks. My energy is not decreased but instead soars. I am still a professional model. I hand out copies of the book to everyone who is interested and who questions me as to how I stay slim. I cannot tell you how many "normal people" have changed their lives following Mr. Burroughs program. And to think it was written over 50 years ago!! This is one book the drug companies would rather you not have, for sure. It cures everything, including my hypoglycemia, anemia, and cravings. It reassures one of the power of the mind and healing ability of the body. Stick with it for at least 10 days and remember, if you cheat, you're only cheating yourself. Good Luck Everyone. FYI helpful hints... *We now have great 'diet teas' available at pharmacies and health food stores that contain psyllium husk or senna. This can be drunk the night before you begin your fast and again the following night, essentially eliminating the need for the uncomfortable internal-salt-water-bath. Have a diluted version first, as the strength of these items is not regulated and some are quite strong. And leave yourself a couple of hours the first morning to, well, eliminate. The discomfort will pass...get through the first two days and you're home free. Get through the first five and you don't even want the lemonade anymore. *If you feel a wave of nausia or a dizzy spell, it is your body eliminating toxins or passing waste out of your body. DO NOT think it is because you need food. It takes a 24-hr no-food period to begin the cleansing process & eating defeats all the work you've put into it. Breathe deep, and thank yourself for finally cleansing that stuff out. The feeling will pass in a few minutes. You may need to drink an elimination tea that night. *Try the mixture with lemon/lime combos and try it hot. It's delicious. Carry a small water bottle in your purse/case of the lemonade without water[concentrate]. Add to hot water or plain water at work or restaurants if you find you must accompany others. *Herbal tea and green tea is allowed, and helps to avoid caffeine headaches from your coffee withdrawl. It also gives you an alternative to the lemonade and keeps you hydrated. *Stay strong in your mind, focussed on your goal, and don't believe others who tell you you're crazy. Tried it with moderate success
I bought this book on a whim. It was a cheap book and sounded like a fast way to reduce weight in a healthy way.

I've had moderate success with this book, which is essentially the lemonade diet. I bought the ingredients, tried it for several days, and lost about 10 pounds in 6 days. The lemonade mixture was able to satisfy my hunger adequately. I didn't feel fantastic, but I felt fine, with no problems.

The book is somewhat "New-Agey" and gets into the subject of toxins and disease and natural cleansing. I wasn't really concerned with that, and readers will have varying opinions of Burroughs' hypotheses.

This is a good system if you really want to lose weight quickly and are ready to commit. Or just try it for a while and see how long you can go.

An eclectic bunch, we are
Our reading club is an eclectic bunch. You have no idea HOW electic! We read everything from the lastest bestsellers like "Da Vinci Code" and "Bark of the Dogwood" to Hilary Clinton's book and, yes, even this one: THE MASTER CLEANSER. Open minded is the one thing we all have in common. So let me just say that this little book has completely changed our lives (and that of our husbands, wives, and kids---even the dog). Folks, this one's going to take off, and how! Highly, highly recommend for anyone interested in the quality of life!

Much easier than expected!
Reading the book almost discouraged me to try it. There were no hunger pangs, no nausea, no stomach cramping. I did experience a slight light-headed (spacey) feeling once or twice but this went away as soon as I drank the lemonade. I was able to take my medication successfully and the "cleansing" process was not as bad as it seems. If you need to be away from home you can actually skip a day of cleansing and pick up the following day. Going back to solid food was no problem for me although I do not recommend meat as your first meal, as my husband came to find out, it's very heavy, ease into that one.
We are now incorporating the lemonade by using it to skip a meal and snacks. We have not gained any weight back by doing this and recommend using it to skip meals if you can't make the real commitment to doing it 24/7. Good Luck to everyone. Life saving personal tutor
I recently took chemistry part II after not having chemistry for several years. This book was a life saver. I was able to pull many examples from it to guide me when I did my homework. Chemistry is tough enough by itself, but this book really helped. All the answers are there so you can test yourself on one part, and then see the answers with explinations on another part. Everything was easy to understand in this book. I highly recommend this Study Guide. This Study Guide will save you a lot of time at the tutor, and keep you from pulling your hair out while figuring out chemistry.

A MUST HAVE FOR ANY EDUCATED PERSON
A gem of a book. It puts at the hands of lay people the wonders of molecular biology. The best way of spending $65 I can think of.

The text is a most refined product distilled by an all-star team of leading scientists. Oriented towards the lay person or the would be specialist, it is simple, unpretentious, sometimes even funny, but always powerfully explanatory. The diagrams are exceptionally clear (a must for explaining such complex subjects) and the photographs are astounding. Love for their subject and passion for teaching are present all along. And mysticism is always around the corner...

If you have ever wondered things like "What are exactly chromosomes?", "How do exactly enzymes work in the cell?", or "How the hell does all this machinery work at a purely chemical level ?" and you are not quite satisfied with popular science books, this one is for you. It will answer these questions and much, much more.

An enjoyable, deeply satisfying tour the force through the molecular level of all living organisms.

A lively and clear introduction to cell biology
I read this book during the summer prior to me senior year in high school, and literally could not put it down. I read the whole work cover-to-cover in a week.

Going in, my background in biology was an introductory cell biology course and my background in chemistry was an introductory chemistry class. That I had little formal training in the sciences was irrelevant when reading this; it explains all the concepts so clearly that I think even a person with no background in science at all could understand it. The diagrams and photos are well-done and highly pertinent.

This is not to say that this book is only for non-scientists. Indeed, I even used knowledge gleaned from this fantastic book to teach my teachers a thing or two. Perhaps the section on muscle contraction is the best written of all - no other book I have ever seen comes close to this in clarity, and this section was one that I recommended to my Anatomy and Physiology teacher for clarification about a few concepts.

I am soon to be a sophomore in college, and this book continues to inspire me on my path to be a professor (I study chemistry with an emphasis on chemical biology). This book was invaluable even in a rigorous microbiology course, not to mention other introductory courses.

In summary, I rarely leave home for extended periods without this text (literally). If there is ONE BOOK that you should buy for studying cellular and molecular biology, let it be this one (or, if you are so inclined, its larger brother, Molecular Biology of the Cell).

A great help for a 1st year Med Student
"Essential Cell Biology" by Bruce Alberts literally saved my 1st semester. The course went hard and the lectures were long and boring. And then - I opened the Essential, started reading, and suddenly things got clear for me. I got an A on the test, and now I know my Cell Biology well - all thanks to this book. Strongly recommended!!!

A textbook that inspires you to think
This book contains essential stuff enough for medical students, although not enough for biochemistry or biology students. But this book is still useful because whenever you read the book, you will be inspired to that particular field. It is written not as tedious and complex as those "big" textbooks. Easy to read. Interesting. I highly recommend this textbook.

But if you are looking for every detail in molecular biology, this book is not satisfactory.

A fairly useful introduction to cell biology
This is a beautifully presented book. My students like it enormously, because of the conversational style, the illustrations, and the overall readibility -and this is perhaps the highest aim a textbook can aspire to achieve.

However, I find that the authors have gone too far in their attempt to abridge and simplify their previous opus -Molecular Biology of the Cell (MBOC): some topics are insufficiently or superficially discussed. Also, the style is slightly verbose at times. Finally, I think that the book could benefit from some reorganization.

The following examples illustrate my point.

*Osmosis is given a very brief mention.(p 382).
*The repulsion for anything mathematic continues the tradition started by MBOC. The Nernst equation, is given just a little box in page 393. The Donnan effect doesn't even have a walk-on part.
*The discussion of action potential contains the usual story of the voltage gated K+ channels, when these channels are not found in myelinated mammalian neurons.
*Myelin itself is not even mentioned.
*The discussion on G protein-linked receptors -a key topic- is very superficial.
*Membrane potential is introduced in a rather convoluted fashion. Furthermore, the concept is used several times before it is finally explained.
*Certain sections may leave the reader confused. For example p53 is described as a gene regulatory protein which arrests the cycle when DNA damage occurs (p 580). But when tumor suppressor genes are discussed, only retinoblastoma is given as an example, which would tend to convey the mistaken idea that p53 is not a tumor suppressor gene. ... Read more

YES, a powerful voice for Medicine with Hope and Warmth!
An inspiring doctor with a powerful but gentle voice. The more medicine opens up like this the better we are all going to be. I think everyone should read this book. Also HIGHLY RECOMMENDED is "Effortless Wellbeing: The Missing Ingredients for Authentic Wellness" by Evan Finer. Though not a medical book, it is a concise and extremely powerful guide to compliment any healing program, to induce true wellness and to help regain personal strength. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING. The Medicine of the Future
Dr. Oz is an accomplished heart surgeon in the field of cardiac transplantation. He describes how he combines complementary medicine (e.g. hypnosis, reflexology, yoga, message, acupuncture. Etc) with orthodox Western medicine. There is an excellent forward by Dr Dean Ornish, and an interesting epilogue containing an overview of the complementary medicine techniques. The bulk of the book contains stories of patients Dr. Oz treated using this revolutionary way. I am a cardiologist, and I have a great interest in combining western medicine with complementary medicine, which is the reason I bought this book. However this book was a bit boring to read and was also a bit of a disappointment. Nevertheless, those interested in this new medicine, which I think will be the medicine of the new millennium, will want to read this book.

FANTASTIC BOOK - SUPERBLY WRITTEN!
What is impressive about this book is the author's concepts of healing both heart and mind as he points out just how closely the two are interconnected. The writing style is one that will grasp the reader's attention from start to finish. The approach to holistic health is a welcome approach to healing. It is a concept that is gradually increasing in the health care field, but one that still has a long way to go before it is universally accepted by all physicians. More education and information needs to be provided in this area to all health care providers. Using the holistic approach, there can be fewer side effects from medication, less depression and a general feeling of well being during the most trying and difficult times. There is much to be said on combining Western and Eastern traditions in the process of healing. Our world can benefit dramatically from this approach and the author vividly explains why throughout the pages of this well-researched and superbly written book. It is highly recommended reading material and most deserving of a five star rating.

Best book of the year
A great book describing an insiders view of what total healing can mean in today's complex medical care system. The book has deservedly won the Books for Better America award for Best Wellness Book of the Year and should be required reading for all patients contemplating surgery.

This book was fantastic - for the sick and healthy alike.
Dr. Mehmet has given me a new perspective on holistic health and disease. As my mother is going through the breast cancer battle, I am incorporating many of his suggestions for heart patients: soothing music after the mastectomy, foot massages as she fades in and out of conciousness, arranging to have someone loved at the bedside constantly. I am looking into getting a masseuse to come in and perform foot massage as her body receives chemotherapy. As a result of this, her attitude is positive and I believe that has a grave impact on how her body reacts to all of this trauma. I'm waiting impatiently for his next book. ... Read more

This book is better than what some reviewers write!

This book is written well and is a useful tool to use when writing everything from a resume and cover letter to a complete proposal. It also give instructions on how to make a web page and scripting in html. Although I am sure that this material is very similiar to that of the previous editions, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to write better.

I wish that I had not read the previous bad reviews and ordered this book in hardcover instead of a used softcover.

Written by an expert in the marketing of textbooks!
John Lannon was a successful author of a college writing and composition textbook. He then created various spinoffs so that his publisher could cover more markets: business writing, technical writing, and so on (for both college and high school).

So he's really not a current specialist in technical writing, and he's not employed as a technical writer. He's just an English instructor who has been using essentially the same basic materials in all his books for decades.

This text is a perfect example. It has very little to do with today's field of technical communications. There are many other textbooks that have more specific and up-to-date examples and guidelines for contemporary technical writers. Any book by Hackos, for example, runs circles around this one.

In any case, he and his publisher don't need your single-copy sale. They sell thousands of these books for coursewide use at many schools across the country for use in very elementary courses. They don't care about individual users.

So save your money and buy something else!

What's new in this 9th Edtion?
The answer is nothing. This 9th edition is practically the same as 8th. This author must be the greediest man I've ever seen. Over half of the colleges in US use this book for technical writing, and he's still charging people $80 for it. Hasn't he made enough money with the 1st edition already?

Good Reference Text, But Poor Reading Material
This text book is not reader friendly. It is tedious and boring. However, it is a good reference manual. Hard to justify the price you pay for it.

Clear-Concise-Simple
The key to technical writing is best described as clear-concise-simple. The most accurate review of this book is to simply add NOT to each of these goals.It is NOT Clear - NOT Concise - Not Simple. It does boast one quality. It is vastly overpriced.
