5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Aerospace Engineering Reference
This excellent book is full of examples and equations to help students relate to the fundamental concepts in an introductory aerodynamics class.

The book is especially useful for reference, as it explains the derivations and many forms of complex equations such as the continuity equation. Furthermore, there are lots of examples of real-world design situations and historical backgrounds.

Overall, one of the best books I have used in my undergraduate aerospace engineering curriculum.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
Great book for first and second semester aerodynamics. Especially the sections on supersonics and hypersonics. Links the technical and historical aspects of aerodynamics to give a very good global perspective of the subject. Anderson also provides "roadmaps" which tend to help the reader stay on track as to where the discussion is going. Those are especially helpful for technical books such as this one.

Book Description

This outstanding hardcover text covers the interaction of aerodynamic forces and elastic structures with unusual thoroughness. It is directed to advanced undergraduates and graduate students, but it has proven highly useful as well to designers and engineers concerned with flutter, structural dynamics, flight loads and related subjects. An introductory chapter covers concepts of aerodynamics, elasticity and mechanical vibrations. Chapters 2 through 11 contain a survey of aeroelastic problems, their historical background, basic physical concepts and the principles of analysis. Chapters 12 through 15 contain the fundamentals of oscillating airfoil theory and a brief summary of experimental results. The physical assumptions involved in the mathematical formulation of a problem are always emphasized, so that the degree of approximation relative to the real physical system can be seen, facilitating the reader's realization of the direction in which future improvement may lie. Each chapter is followed by a bibliography. Republication of the 1969 Dover revised edition--containing a new Preface and Index by the author--of the work originally published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., New York, 1955. 147 illustrations. 20 tables. 3 Prefaces. Introduction. Author and Subject Indexes. 4 Appendixes. Separate bibliographies for each chapter.

Book Description

This hardcover edition of Principles of Aeroelasticity constitutes an attempt to bring order to a group of problems which have coalesced into a distinct and mature subdivision of flight-vehicle engineering. The authors have formulated a unifying philosophy of the field based on the equations of forced motion of the elastic flight vehicle. A distinction is made between static and dynamic phenomena, and beyond this the primary classification is by the number of independent space variables required to define the physical system. Following an introductory chapter on the field of aeroelasticity and its literature, the book continues in two major parts. Chapters 2 through 5 give general methods of constructing static and dynamic equations and deal specifically with the laws of mechanics for heated elastic solids, forms of aerodynamic operators, and structural operators. Chapters 6 through 10 survey the state of aeroelastic theory. The chapters proceed from simplified cases which have only a small, finite number of degrees of freedom, to one-dimensional systems (line structures), and finally to two-dimensional systems (plate- and shell-like structures). Chapter 9 combines some of the previous results by treating the unrestrained elastic vehicle in flight. All these chapters assume linear systems with properties independent of time, but Chapter 10 takes up the subject of systems which must be represented by nonlinear equations or by equations with time-varying coefficients. Unabridged, corrected republication of the original (1962) edition. Index. References.

3-0 out of 5 stars Barking up a Texas Tree ....
First I must say that this work deserves praise. It really is a good book in many respects. The photographs are good. The region/county zones within a Texas map are detailed and useful. Each tree has one to several descriptive paragraphs about the tree including uses, growth rate, height, and sometimes a snipet of history.
You'd expect that though.
What you'd also expect but is unbelievably absent, are two of the three most important identification tools for identifying any tree ... a picture or drawing of the tree itself (!) and bark identification.
The only way to identify your mystery tree is if you have a leaf from it. Count how months in Texas our trees are leaf-bearing and subrtact that number from 12. The remainder is how many months this book sits useless on the shelf.
It's a shame too, because what IS in the book is well done. This would make an excellent companion book with any other that shows the actual tree (a glaring omission) and a close-up, or even a discription of, the bark.
Buy it if you can pair it with another book that gives you the other two pieces of the puzzle .... I haven't yet found it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trees of Texas Is the Easiest of ID Books to Use
The format of this book, with its large detailed photos, makes identification easier than any plant book I've ever used. When I looked through a friend's book, I determined to get a copy for myself. The only thing I would change about the book would be to put 'native' or 'exotic' high on the page, but the information is in there.

5-0 out of 5 stars This listing is messed up.
Amazon has this listing wrong. The book, THE BIRD IS ON THE WING: AERODYNAMICS AND THE PROGRESS OF THE AMERICAN AIRPLANE, is solely authored by James R. Hansen and it deserves five stars. But this listing includes some confused information about a book dealing with birds. Perhaps the Amazon folks can fix it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Second-Most-Handled Book
Flight is a miracle; Stephen Dalton forcefully makes that case. The little boy believes him. The seasoned aviator believes him. The scholarly engineer believes him. I believe him, for I am all those people. As Chairman of a major undergraduate Aerospace Engineering department, as prior Chief Test Pilot for a developing fighter, as a boy at heart that still loves the simple joys of flight, I believe him. My students believe him, drawn by the stunning pictures, making this my second-most-handled book.

As a Aeronautics educator, I've actually looked for such a book for some time. If students are to understand the complexity and wonder of an airplane, I need to draw their attention to 'simpler' things, things they already know (though they may not know that they know them). They've seen ducks land on ponds. Through Dalton's book my students (ranging from 8 to 23) connect how in an airplane we're merely mimicking what God has already done in the design of the duck.

Dalton has done this powerfully in the most amazing nature photography I've ever seen. Spanning the smallest flying insects to the largest of flying machines, Dalton depicts the aeronautics that make flight work. Furthermore, without compromising splendidly accurate technical content, the photography still persuades you that flight is still miraculous.

Miraculous is an interesting choice of words. Is there another conclusion we're to draw? The boy in me, the pilot in me, the educator in me are compelled to marvel at the God whose fingerprint is so strikingly upon such images of flight. On one hand we assert that only by intense study and careful design can man arrive at a robust flying machine. Is it then reasonable to insist that to improve upon our best efforts, to design instead a bird, for example, you must instead forsake intent and rely instead upon chance? My most-handled-book explains how it is fitting that the boy, the warrior, and the teacher should take note of nature and then worship the God responsible. "The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech..." Psalm 19

Buy the book. Ask then if you should worship God. ... Read more

Book Description

In 1994, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and theDefense Airborne Reconnaissance Office launched a joint initiative with thegoal to overcome the impediments that had hampered past unmanned aerialvehicle (UAV) development. This effort--designated the High-AltitudeEndurance Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration(HAE UAV ACTD) program--applied an innovative acquisition strategy to thedevelopment of two UAVs: one conventionally configured (Global Hawk) and theother with a low-observable configuration (DarkStar). The report summarizesthe major research findings regarding the HAE UAV ACTD program's acquisitionstrategy. The authors conclude that despite DarkStar's cancellation--anddespite overall program cost growth and schedule slippage in basic designand test of the two HAE UAV concepts, the ACTD program did accomplish itsprimary objective by successfully demonstrating the military utility of aUAV with a continuous, all-weather, wide-area surveillance capability.Although the program's single requirement--the unit flyaway price--was notmet, it did promote cost consciousness while at the same time preventing theimposition of additional system capabilities during the basic systemdevelopment. The authors found the program's use of Other TransactionAuthority to lend considerable flexibility to the effort. While theprogram's designation as an ACTD imposed cost and schedule boundaries thatconstrained system development, it also provided a high degree offlexibility to adjust the program execution.Areas of risk were addressedas they arose, and early flight test experience was assimilated intocontinuing system development efforts.Relatively modest changes inup-front planning processes, the structured participation of operationalusers early in the program, and contract language regarding oversightprocesses and incentives would ensure successful application of theacquisition strategy to a broader range of systems. ... Book Description

The book provides a solid and unitary mathematical foundation of the basic and advanced principles of aerodynamics. The densities of the fundamental solutions are determined from singular integral equations. The fundamental solutions method in aerodynamics was considered for the first time and used by the author in over 30 papers published in prestigious journals (e.g. QAM, AIAA, ZAMM, etc) in order to develop a unitary theory. The boundary element method is used for numerical approximations in compressible aerodynamics. The text incorporates several original contributions, among other traditional mathematical methods. The book also represents a comprehensive presentation of research results since the seminal books on aerodynamics of Ashley and Landahl (1965) and Katz & Plotkin (1991).A rigorous mathematical approach is used to present and explain classic and modern results in this field of science. The author has therefore conceived several appendices on the Distribution Theory, the singular Integral Equations Theory, the Finite Part, Gauss Quadrature Formulae, etc.The book is concluded by a relevant bibliographical list which is especially useful for researchers. The book is aimed primarily at applied mathematicians, aeronautical engineers and space science researchers. The text may be used also as a comprehensive introduction to the mathematical foundations fo aerodynamics, by graduate students n engineering and fluid dynamics with a strong mathematical background. ... Book Description

Over the past three decades, a number of attempts have been madeto develop unmanned aerial vehicles, but many of these efforts have met withsuboptimal results. Recently, however, the Defense Advanced ResearchProjects Agency (DARPA), in conjunction with the Defense AirborneReconnaissance Office, launched an effort -- designated the High-AltitudeEndurance Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Advanced concept Technology Demonstration(HAE UAV ACTD) program -- whose objective was to overcome past constraintsin UAV development through the use of a new acquisition policy. This reportassesses two transitions of the HAE UAV ACTD program -- the first from DARPAto Air Force management and the second from an ACTD to a Major DefenseAcquisition Program (MDAP) -- toward the goal of determining which elementsof the program's novel acquisition strategy facilitated these transitionsand which engendered problems. The authors found that in aggregate, theinnovative acquisition strategy adopted in the HAE UAV ACTD program had apositive effect on program execution in that it successfully attained theprogram's key goals: demonstrating a new operational concept at a lower costand in a shorter time frame than would have been possible with a traditionalacquisition approach. The program's transition from the ACTD construct to anMDAP, however -- although ultimately successful -- posed a number ofchallenges, many of which stemmed directly from its acquisition strategy. Tocircumvent these problems in the future, the authors recommend that allorganizations involved in a program, particularly operational users, begiven substantive input into program planning at the earliest possiblejuncture. ... Book Description

This monograph provides a comprehensive study about how a dilute gas described by the Boltzmann equation responds under extreme nonequilibrium conditions. This response is basically characterized by nonlinear transport equations relating fluxes and hydrodynamic gradients through generalized transport coefficients that depend on the strength of the gradients. In addition, many interesting phenomena (e.g. chemical reactions or other processes with a high activation energy) are strongly influenced by the population of particles with an energy much larger than the thermal velocity, what motivates the analysis of high-degree velocity moments and the high energy tail of the distribution function. The authors have chosen to focus on shear flows with simple geometries, both for single gases and for gas mixtures. This allows them to cover the subject in great detail. Some of the topics analyzed include: + Non-Newtonian or rheological transport properties, such as the nonlinear shear viscosity and the viscometric functions.+ Asymptotic character of the Chapman-Enskog expansion.+ Divergence of high-degree velocity moments.+ Algebraic high energy tail of the distribution function.+ Shear-rate dependence of the nonequilibrium entropy.+ Long-wavelength instability of shear flows.+ Shear thickening in disparate-mass mixtures.+ Nonequilibrium phase transition in the tracer limit of a sheared binary mixture.+ Diffusion in a strongly sheared mixture. The presentation is intermediate between an extensive review article and a text. Similarities with the former are due to its exhaustive treatment of the subject but it is more like the latter in that the results are offered in a pedagogical and self-contained way and make connection with a broader context. The approach involves complementary and reinforcing methods: analytic, numerical, and simulational, so the results are controlled and unambiguous. This distinguishes the book from others that mainly emphasize mathematical methods or realistic phenomenology. The text can be read as a whole or can be used as a resource for selected topics from specific chapters. It can be useful to graduate students and researchers in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, kinetic theory of rarefied gases, irreversible thermodynamics, physical chemistry, chemical engineering, fluid mechanics, or applied mathematics. ... Book Description

Turbulence in multicomponent reacting gas mixtures is an important mechanism underlying numerous natural phenomena closely related to the study of our space environment. This book develops a new mathematical approach for modelling multicomponent gas turbulence that adequately describes the combined processes of dynamics and heat and mass transfer when chemical kinetics and turbulent mixing are equally important. The developed models include the evolutionary transfer equations for the single-point second correlation moments of turbulent fluctuations of thermohydrodynamical parameters. The phenomenological approach to the closure problem in hydrodynamic equations of mean motion at the level of the first order moments is based on the thermodynamics of irreversible processes and enables defining relationships in a more general form as compared to those conventionally deduced using the mixing path concept. Based on the developed approach, turbulent exchange factors for a planetary upper atmosphere are evaluated, and a turbulent model of a protoplanetary accretion gas-dust disk involving heat and mass transfer and coagulation is also considered. As compared to previously published books on the problem of turbulence, this book deals, for the first time, with the complicated models of reacting gas mixtures. It is intended for graduate and postgraduate students in the fields of fluid gas dynamics, astrophysics, space physics, planetary sciences, and aeronomy, and especially for those dealing with computer modelling of the processes in such natural media. The book may also be of interest to specialists in the relevant fields of ecology, engineering, and material processing. ... Read more
