Good First Textbook
I've had my copy of Aquatic Entomology for almost 15 years now. I still refer to it quite often. It's a great first text for someone wanting to learn the craft of identification of aquatic insects. This IS a technical book, but not as technical as some (Merrit and Cummings for example). If your a fisherman who only wants to know what a Mayfly, Caddisfly or Stonefly looks like, then this book is not for you. This book also assumes some basic knowledge of aquatic insects. If you want to be able to recognize the major families of these (and other) orders than this is a great book to start with. There is a lot of information for the fisherman who is willing to "read between the lines". Know the basic natural history of certain insect groups will help one to be a better fisherman. This text also gives the basics of aquatic insect collection and storage. There is a tremendous world of diversity in our streams, rivers and lakes. This is a great book to help one unlock the key to this world.

Great text for beginning Aquatic Entomlogy enthusiasts!
I have personally taken an upper level Aquatic Entomology course from Dr. McCafferty at Purdue University. McCafferty's text is very well done, and very easy to use. The 'flow-chart' style identification keys are perfect for the non formally-trained entomologist. The illustrations are by Arwin Provonsha (who is also at Purdue Universtity). Arwin is one of the best scientific illustrators I have seen. Definately top-notch work! Some taxa are a bit out of date, notably the Hydrophilidae, but that is hardly a problem. Hopefully a revision will be published in the near future to keep this wonderful text current.

Not designed for the Flyfisher.
Very little information is inserted that is of benefit to the flyfisher. Classifications are outdated and most of the text is complicated and useless. Some of the pictures (drawings) were great. It helped in identifying some of the basic insects.

A superb review of aquatic entomology in North America
McCafferty's authoritative work is directed at the nonspecialist, particularly anglers with a scientific bent and ecologists who are not entomologists. It is widely used as a basic text for aquatic entomology in universities, as well. It provides keys for insect families, detailed descriptions of orders, extensive information on life histories and habitats, and is sumptuously illustrated with line drawings, many in color, by A. V. Provonsha. It is the most complete and accessible work on the aquatic entomology of North America north of Mexico. It belongs on the shelf of every serious angler-entomologist.

A few of the taxa have changed names since the publication of the book in 1981, but this shouldn't prove to be problem for the intended audience.

Lacking general information too Technical, good graphics.
I ordered from mail service and wish I hadn't. This book should be viewed first. Classification outdated. This book was too technical and incomplete. A very small portion was intended for fly fishers. The cost of this book would be better applied to many more up to date books designed for fly fishers interested in identification. ... Read more

Still the best
This may well be the most useful one book you will ever read. Bill Mollison is the consumate intellectual wild-crafter, gathering ideas and techniques from around the globe and spinning them all into one coherent volume.

Permaculture strives to create human systems that mimic the stability of a healthy ecosystem. This book lays out the philosophy and the grounded techniques to do just that. ...

It IS possible to live on this planet without turning it into a cinder ball, but only if we use our brains to do so. Start with this book. Start soon.

An inspiring book!
For those of us searching for an ecologically responsible lifestyle amid urban and suburban insanity, Bill Mollison has a real and exciting answer. This book is full of helpful advice presented in a very readable way. (The only problem might be getting stuck in the chapters on climates that don't concern you; just skip them until later!) The groundwork philosophy of permaculture is laid first, and the book moves from there to the practical business of actually designing one. The emphasis is on letting various plant and animal species work together as much as possible, to form a basically self-sustaining system from which people can reap a continual harvest, not only of food, but of interest and self-respect. What a prospect! It is certainly a very different one from what we young people have been taught to expect from life! This volume is much more complete in both the philosophy and the practice than were the original "Permaculture One" and "Permaculture Two." It is also much less focused on the Southern Hemisphere, which is helpful for North Americans trying to visualize their own permaculture. I can only hope that more people happen upon this book as I did and are themselves inspired to create a fulfilling life for themselves and their children.

The Permaculture Bible
If ecology was the primary intellectual response to the environmental and agricultural crises of the twentieth century, permaculture (or permanent agriculture) was its practical application. Born in the mid-seventies, permaculture co-founder Bill Mollison defines this new field as "the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of landscape and people providing their food, energy, shelter, and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way. Without permaculture there is no possibility of a stable social order." In other words, permaculture is the practical science of sustainability - a whole-systems approach life in the biosphere - and this near-encyclopedic tome covers every aspect of the subject, from soil conditions to climactic factors. The only conceivable drawback of this book is that it is rather difficult to ascertain and won't come cheap. If you enjoy tracking down rare and expensive books, there are none better than Mollison's Permaculture: A Designer's Manual. Large, comprehensive and filled with helpful illustrations and explanations, it is nothing less than the permaculture bible. On the other hand, if you are on a tight budget, and do not wish to spend your time searching for an unworn copy, there are newer and more accessible titles on the subject: like the other permaculture co-founder David Holmgren's Permaculture: Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability, or the concise and slim Earth User's Guide to Permaculture, by Rosemary Morrow. Whatever book you choose, this fascinating subject is perhaps humanity's only hope for a sustainable (read livable) future. Should not be overlooked.

Practical and Inspirational !
This is one of those few books that when you've read it you wonder why arent we doing any of these things and why have'nt more people read it! It is a sizable volume, which may be one reason why it not more widely read, and it covers a range of issues such as homesite layout and design (and probably not the one's you're used to... ever consider an underground home?), getting maximum production from your garden in a minimum of space, and other ideas for designing your way of living in harmony with the climate and geography where you live. It does wax philisophical often but to me that was the best part of the book, it is truly and integrated way of considering how to live with your environment and not just simply in it.

Not just a must have for Farmers and Gardeners
If Buckminster Fuller was still alive this is the book he would have wrote. And like Bucminster Fullers work this book is an important contirbution to science, not just farming and gardening. This book is also a must have for designers and not just gardeners and farmers. While a close "cousin" of this book on designing settlements, "A Pattern Language" by Christopher Alexander is quite often a standard text for students of software design. The chapters in this book that deal with "Concepts and Themes of Design", "Methods of Design" and "Pattern Understanding", give a much better understanding of the basics of good design than any other book that you are likely to ever read. While a "Pattern Language" shows how to create a synergy between man and the archititecture of individual buildings and their collective groupings as villages suburbs and towns.This book shows how to design human settlements that create a synergy between man and nature that is incredible in its scope, and its scalabality from the micro to the macro. If you are designing a house, a farm, or even a city or state this is the most dynamic book on the planet for urban and rural design. This books also contains many metaphors for design and tools for thought (such as decision trees) that are useful for anyone interested in design. This book is a must have if you are a serious farmer or home gardener. If you are interested in infrastructure design whether it be for I.T. infrastructure such as software or hardware design or Economic and Government Infrastructure then this book will give you a competitive advantage over fellow designers of policy. As this book clearly demonstrates noone can beat Mother Nature when it comes to designing systems that maximixe the flow and interaction of energy and information. This book is quite large and is over 570 pages long, if you are not the sort of person who likes to read and absorb a lot of Material then you could find this book a bit daunting. If you are a Farmer or Gardener who just wishes to improve the yield of their crops then you will find "Introduction to Permaculture" by Bill Molllison much more useful. It summarises all the principles of design laid down in "Permaculture A Designers Manual" and its small size and volume (198 pages) is a lot easier to digest. A good companion to these two books is the Video of the Australian Telelvision series "Global Gardener" narrated by the inventor of the concept of Permaculture, Bill Mollison. This video shows examples of the principles of Permaculture Design at work in every climate and situation you are likely to encounter in both the Northern and Southern hemisphere. ..... ... Too technical
Even though the book contains alot of useful information--if you are a scientist, I found it to be frustrating for someone trying to manage a weight loss program. My mistake was to purchase this book before the program book. I am hoping it will be a better reference tool than an explanation for a diet.

Never heard of most products
I had high hopes for this glycemic index to food products. However, most items listed seem to be from Australia, Canada and South Africa and I don't recognize the brand names. The book does not have enough useful information. I am very disappointed.

Helpful information... if you're in Australia
I had searched far and wide for a good listing of foods by Glycemic LOAD (different from glycemic index). This book does have a really nice compilation that includes glycemic load and glycemic index as well as net carb count all in one chart. The frustrating part is that it is focused more on Canadian and Australian products than on United States. Many of the items that are listed are not available here. But it IS better than anything I've been able to find thus far.

More, Please
What we need is more. More specific results, more numbers for foods available in the US, more specific name-brand items, more, more, much more. Yes, I realize that research is time-consuming and expensive. I realize this is the best available resource. But we need more...

Just for fun, you should read the South Beach Diet book for contrast. This book (NGR) looks to me to have a more balanced, long term approach whereas the SBD seems to be focused on those that want fast results. A "must" for everyone who bakes!!!!

Essential of Food Safety & Sanitation
I am using your textbook for a class I teach for the Oklahoma City/County Health Department.I Love It!The class I teach is the Food Service Operator's Certification Course that is required by all food service operators in this county. I am a Registered Dietitian who is contracted by Oklahoma State University-OKC and Francis Tuttle to teach the class for the health department. It is kind of a community service offered by the two schools. I have only been teaching the class for three years now, and by far your book is the best.

Your book has made my job so easy and so much fun!Some of my students are returning to do the re-certification class and bringing managers in who have not taken the class in 20 years.In the past, they have just challenged the test every three years, because they thought the class was too boring. (and theyknew it all).
I would highly recommend this book to educators in the nutrition field. I think all nutrition majors need to know this important information. I also recommend it for a reference for my food service managers in my nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

A good read for the new or beginning beekeeper
I would highly recommend this book to the new or beginning beekeeper. It is a very good read and is not nearly as dry or flowerly as several of the books out there on the subject. It does an excellent job of walking you thru the basics of setting up a bee hive and what to look for once your bee hive is populated. It lost a star in my veiw because it does not cover well everything that an experienced beekeeper needs to know and, if you are really a "dummy" beekeeping is not for you.

Simple, Educational and Entertaining ....PERFECT!
I have been contimplating starting bees as a hobby. I ordered the book and couldn't put it down. The author shares his facination with bees and gives straight forward help on all the questions you have. He even addresses things like fear of bees and how to "sell" your neighbors. I loved it! I ordered a hive, equipment, and bees yesterday and I can't wait until they arrive.

Good for Dummies
Keep in mind this book has a "dummies" slant. It's a great beginner book and I own a copy. I recommend it. Lots of conversational plain english, funny cartoons, photographs, etc. But, buy another book as well to round out your knowledge. For example, Howland doesn't explain *why* you need an inner cover... just says it's part of the hive. He only provides *one* technique for queen introduction (a good one), when there are several others. Then he perpetuates the myth that you should scrape a bee's stinger away rather than pinch it away (Discover magazine, et. al., now dispute this), and when discussing *moving* a hive, he leaves out the "3 mile rule" and the "1 foot per day" approach, etc. He suggests using motor oil moats to prevent ants (works great), but doesn't mention that vegetable oil works great also, without being as noxious. Like I say, great book, buy it, but get some others too.

The Best for Beginners
Being a complete dummie about Bees I was looking for the basics in a how-to book. I have not always been pleased with previous "For Dummies" books but this one is good. It is complete with advice for what you need to start, what is really necessary and what is optional, and how to decide. I am up and running with my bees and owe a lot to this book. When I went to the supplier I knew enough to make educated decisions on what to buy. I bought two other books and they were a waste of time.

A Golden Start
A well-written practical book for the novice beekeeper and for those whishing to recheck their habits, good or bad. It is an easy book to read, the tips are practical, informed and work. I still have not yet found the courage to not use gloves! I would recommend this informative book to all who wish to enter the wonderful world of bee keeping. ... Read more

Essential of Food Safety & Sanitation

Excellent Book to start Biochemistry!
Mathew's Biochemistry is an excellent book to start this difficult subject! The easy diagrams and interesting notes just keeps you wanting to learn more...Read, read and read. If only it could have a more clinical focus it would be 100% perfect. Combine it with "Harper's Biochemistry" and you will soon run A+ on scores! To die for!

A really excellent Biochem book.
There are so many books out there that is really tough to choose one. This is certainly one of the best available. It combines up to date data (3rd edition - 2000) with great easy to understand writing. It may not be the best books available... but it certainly is one of the best.

I am a biochemistry major at the university of the philippines. i have several biochem books on my shelf and i just recently purchased a copy of the 2000 edition (i also have the 2nd ed). the book just keeps getting better. the book really helps a lot especially when the class lecture corresponds with how the book presents the subject matter. as a biochem major, i'd say this is a pretty good way to present biochem. it makes it seem easy and fun to read. you look at the pictures and read the caption and you learn the idea in a flash.

One of the best biochemistry book
I have not seen the 2000 edition yet, but the previous edition is very elegantly written. Compare with some other biochemistry text, this book provides another view into biochemistry. Almost (if not all) all the chapters have a special topic after the chapter text, showing you how we can turn the dry text into useful experimental tools for solving life's problem, scientifically. These special topics also give us a view into the physical chemistry world, which has become more and more important at the time.

Illustrative
It's difficult to review a book on a subject as biochemistry, when you're a student, and this is the only book I've read on the subject. This book is used by medical students at the Universty of Bergen, Norway, and as a student I find it very easy to read (if you have mind that biochemistry is not an easy subject). Invaluable resource
While this book is not the type most people curl up to read on a cold winter's night, I found it to be a very worthwhile resource for any garden. You can research any problem by either plant or by symptom. Each section is color coded along the page edge for easy use. The pages on Individual Plant Problems are separated into sections like "Garden Trees" or "Bulbs", and then alphabetically listed by common name and the name of the problem. The Gallery of Symptoms allows you to look at general problems with a particular part of the plant, such as leaves, stems, or fruits. Full color photographs accompany each symptom or pest, as well as a listing of types of plants affected and the season of affect. A short description follows with the page number for a full description and the recommended treatment.

GOOD & GROSS!
First off, if you can not stand the sight of a bug, this is not for you. I am a horticulture student who loves plants but hates pests! I got this book for a class and it is great! All gardeners shoud have this book close by at all times! It is an indespensible refrence for anyone who wants to have a happy healthy garden. I love the way the book is organized by a "Gallery of Symptoms" in the begining. This is a section of close up pictures of leafs, fruits, nuts, vegetables and flowers with all the pest (disese and bug)problems I ever (never) wanted to see. It is so disgusting that my friends will not go near the book! However, I am excited to try the various non-chemical controls the book readily provides. A holostic aproach seems to be the theme of the A-Z directory in the second half which gives me comfort in gardening... not just for me but the birds, bees and other GOOD critters in the garden. Comprehensive except for lack of Organic control methods
"The Ortho Problem Solver" is a wonderful reference book on pests, fungus', etc and controlling them with inorganic methods. Of course, Ortho is not known for organic pest control, but I still feel that maybe they should include this information considering that many that wish to control certain pests also live in wildlife areas--such as areas where there are birds, or are environmentalists or oriented towards this area when it comes to certain issues such as vegetables and fruit.

Environmentally correct methods do often work. Some will do nothing about pests no matter what because they fear any interruption in the wildlife.

I purchased the book because of the information it has in a variety of other areas--soil PH, lists of pests/fungus/other and photos of the damage they do, and overall general information. It is a very interesting and comprehensive reference book. It has a good layout with several sections.

This book is the "missing link" to solving garden problems.
Having just completed training in the Master Gardener program in our state, I found that I still needed a better visual reference to correctly identify garden problems. Recently, while shopping for a pesticide, I was able to pinpoint my exact problem because the store had prominently displayed a copy of "The Ortho Problem Solver" by Michael D. Smith! Its brilliant photographs and easy to understand narratives were surpassed only by its explicit and wonderfully cross-referenced index feature. I was unable to tear myself away - and kept calling my husband over to help me remember photos for later diagnosis at home.

As a serious photographer, I was able to appreciate the clarity and specificity of the photographs - and as a gardener, I was determined to own my own copy of this book immediately! (I will only be disappointed with this purchase if a newer version of the book is published before I receive my copy!)

Master Gardener Comments:
This book is the best source I have found to help diagnose plant problems. The fifth edition has better color pictures than previous editions, and it is wider to allow more space for the pictures and writing. Of course, since it is an Ortho book, the product recommendations are for Ortho products. However, this gives the reader a clear indication of the type of compound they should consider for control. Well worth the money for the avid gardener.

You pay for Ortho's ads
This book was a bit of a disappointment to me. The information is not as extensive as it first seems with it's 1000 plus pages. 143 pages are product labels which I see as a platform for advertisement of ortho products. Most solutions to plant problems refer the reader almost exclusively to one of it's own products. Another disappointment is the repetitive word for word descriptions of particular plant problems that many plants have in common. That may be unavoidable to some extent because there can only be a few ways to describe things that are similar but I was surprised at the exact duplicate wording throughout the book. I think it is a good reference in general but I feel that anyone who purchases such an expensive reference should know what they are paying for. Had I known ahead of time, I don't think I would have spent the money. Multiple resources such as Sunset's Western Garden Problem Solver, Rodale's Garden Insect, Disease & Weed Identification Guide, and other Complete Garden books can give you the same information with less biased solutions at a lower cost.

A wise investment for the Avid Gardener
Much more comprehensive than the book Ortho offers for the "home gardener", incorporating many more plants and their problems. I recommend this for the true avid gardener or one that has invested a lot of money into their landscaping. It includes most problems and solutions that you can encounter in your yard. Though this book is normally available for reference at many landscaping/garden stores that sell Ortho products, those visits to look at it can become very time consuming. A quick look-up in the book and treatment is complete (if I have the correct chemicals) before I'd even have a chance to get by a store. It Is Not A Textbook ! It Is A Referance Book!
The book, at least from my point of view, is not a good book to grasp the core concepts of Biochemistry from at the beginning of your biochemistry course.Actually,it is a tool by which you can get a deep understanding of the subject by the aid of other books that can give you the full picture of Biochemistry. Its advantage is in that it covers in details many of the topics that other books usually do not cover. I remember many times finding myself opening the book looking for some details that some professors mention as extra bits which are not found in the other textbooks and present in this book. I recommend it as a reference book for medical students but not a textbook.

Top-of-the-Pop reference book
I am a medical student having studied medicine and biochemistry for the past 3 years. I found the Harper's Biochemistry by a coincidence on the university library.......it is now my favored reference on biochemical and some physiological matters being very concise with more specific details than many other biochemistry textbooks. Said that, I might have more value in your last periods of biochemistry and physiology and as a reference for the rest of your study. Thats why you should go to the library to try it for a couple of months. But then again....you will not be disappointed. S. Wiedemann - Denmark.

Harper's Illustrated Biochemistry
This edition is brilliant. The authors did a fantastic job in displaying such difficult information. The chapter summaries are key for holistic understanding, and the illustrations are very simplistic and highly memorable. Indeed, a job well done. It is perfect for any medical biochemistry course, and the added molecular biology completes the biochemical literature.

The don juan for biochem books
As a Doctor of Pharmacy student, I came across this book during the beginning of the semester while taking biochemistry. This book in my opinion should be owned by all students in the medicinal field. Getting an A in the class was made alot easier to me just because of this book. I found myself using Harper's more than the original required class text book. At a great price compartively with information given..this book is a must. Ive also used Lippincotts Illustrated Biochemistry,as good as that book is, I would say spend the extra 15$ and get one that is alot more in detail.

Detailed information presented in a succinct manner
This is the best biochemistry book for medical students on the market. Medical students need a biochemistry textbook that balances detail with brevity. Harper's biochem does this very well. The chapters are well organized, well written and quite short. The brevity of each chapter makes it easy to digest in one sitting. It also allows specificity as you do not have to scan large chapters looking for information. There is a good balance of diagrams and text and the diagrams are of good quality. The 26th edition is shorter than the 25th edition and the information is more condensed, some chapters have been removed and the information incorporated into existing chapters. Best Book for Beginners
I started my backyard flock with only this book for reference. It's got really good information and is a really fun read - lots of humor mixed in with the great information. If you're thinking about starting a small flock and you're a beginner, this is the book you should buy. It's got great information including a chapter with basic poultry terminology, info on hatching chicks, chicken diseases, raising chickens for eggs or for meat, and a whole lot more. And it's all written in everyday English that even a girl from the city like me can understand. Buy this book!

It's the book that got me started
We live on a hobby farm in Minnesota, and this is the book that got me started with my flock of happy hens. It's written in plain, down-to-earth English for the rank beginner who wants to keep chickens on a small scale for eggs, meat, or just the pleasure of having them around. It's especially nice for the free-run flock, with instructions on choosing breeds, raising chicks, housing, nutrition, hatching your own chicks under broody hens or in an incubator, etc. A must-have for anybody who is thinking about keeping chickens.
