5-0 out of 5 stars Among Analytical Chemistry books this one is very good
I respect all reviews, but in my opinion, is very important the teacher in order one student can feel comfortable in a class, for this reason I think some customer reviews of this book (before 17-august-2000) are biased. In my opinion this book is very good, one of the best among several analytical chem. books, even though its CD could be improved a lot. However, if anybody wants to learn about Analytical chemistry in general, this book is an excellent reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent analytical chemistry book
One of the best written textbooks in any area of chemistry. Here is a measure of the quality of this book. When I was graduate school, most of our research group owned a copy of Harris and we kept it on our shelves for handy reference. We had all purchased it as undergraduates but kept it because we LIKED it and found it so darn useful. It is an excellent general reference for anybody whose work involves chemical analysis. The tables of acid dissociation constants and redox half-potentials are some of the most extensive you will find any textbook.

When I first started teaching, I used Skoog & West on the basis of my predecessor's recommendation. However, during my first semester, I found myself constantly referring to Harris because of its clear explainations and good examples. In the second semester, I conducted a head-to-head competition with students reading a chapter on the same material from both Harris and from Skoog. The overwhelming student preference was for Harris and I have used it in my classes ever since. Readers who don't like Harris aren't going to be happy with any analytical chemistry textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Analytical Chemistry Textbook!
When I was an undergraduate student, the reference text was Chimie Analytique Generale by Gaston Charlot (which is quite an antique, completely unexplained, but problems are OK). But when I really needed a clearly explanation, no other book could match Harris. It's clear, yet fully explained, and it's miles better than any Quantitative Chemical Analysis book (e.g. Skoog, Christian, among many others). It covers not only "classic techniques, e.g. titrimetric techniques acid-base equilibria, gravimetric methods, titrimetric analysis by complex with EDTA, among others, but it can also be adapted to Instrumental Methods courses (but, at some point, some additional material must be supplemented). Thanks to that book, I happened to learn quite a lot, and I used it for 4 semesters in Analytical Chemistry. If you don't like this one, you probably won't like any other Quantitative Chemical Analysis textbook. Now that I'm a practicing chemist, I'm still amazed that this book has never abandoned my desk because is an excellent reference work. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in Analytical Chemistry.

4-0 out of 5 stars An acceptable book
I don't particularly enjoy chemistry; but at least the author attempts to throw some random humor throughout the text. The material covered by the book is horrifically boring; (I think) but the occasional jokes make the reading marginally more bearable. It's one of the better Chemistry textbooks I've read due to the less serious tone of the author.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Defintive Book for Analytical Chemistry
This book is the definitive guide for anyone who is taking a course in Analytical Chemistry or just wants to learn about Analytical Chemistry. The language and examples are straight-forward and very easy to understand and format is easy and progressive without being intimidating to anyone who may find chemistry to be a difficult subject to understand. ... Book Description

This book provides a non-mathematical, descriptive approach to modern NMR spectroscopy, taking examples from organic, inorganic, and biological chemistry. It also contains much practical advice about the acquisition and use of spectra. Starting from the simple 'one pulse' sequence, the text employs a 'building block' approach to lead naturally to multiple pulse and two-dimensional NMR. Spectra of readily available compounds illustrate each technique. One- and two-dimensional methods are integrated in three chapters which show how to solve problems by making connections between spins through bonds, through space, or through exchange. There are also chapters on spectrum editing and solids. The final chapter contains a case history which attempts to weave the many strands of the text into a coherent strategy. This second edition reflects the progress made by NMR in the past few years: there is greater emphasis on inorganic nuclei; some two-color spectra are used; the treatment of heteronuclear experiments has moved from direct to 'inverse' detection; many new examples and spectra have been included; and the literature to early 1992 has been covered.Like the first edition, this work will be highly useful for all NMR spectroscopists: chemists, academic and industrial researchers, and advanced undergraduate and graduate students needing a clear guide to this valuable technology. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any aspiring NMR jockeys
For those studying biomolecules with NMR, the unofficial bible is of course the maroon colored Cavanagh book. Though this is an excellent book, it isn't the best suited book for beginners. This is where Levitt's book comes in: this is by far the kindest introduction to NMR that I have seen, with heavy emphasis on understanding the concepts first and the formalism later. The book is full of useful diagrams, detailed analogies, and exercises for the reader where other books only show equations. So borrows someone's Cavanagh first, and if you get stuck after 20 pages then order yourself a copy of Levitt and you won't be disappointed. If you already have studied NMR and are looking at how to apply it to proteins, then Cavanagh should suit you fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear first introduction to NMR
This book could simply be stated as an excellent attempt to introduce the foundations of NMR. It is a very good primer on all theoretical aspects that are essential to an understanding of the subject.
It offers a methodical, step-by-step approach. Useful tools and consistent terminology are the most attracting feature of this volume. It is well-illustrated; and controversial issues are highlighted in the "Notes" sections at the end of each chapter. It has illustrative problems at the end of each chapter, with solutions provided at the end.
Interestingly, the appendix covers many important aspects that are needed at a more advanced stage. Useful tools for the understanding of NMR are developed at appropriate stages. These include: the box notation for coherences, populations, density matrices and transitions; the origin of NMR spectra from individual coherence terms in the density matrix; origin of 2-D NMR signals as well as many important concepts in Fourier Transform NMR are described. The origins of relaxation enjoy a very readable and simplistic approach in the last chapter.
Whenever simplistic approximations are used, the author never claims of completeness or rigour. Distinction is made between terms that are physically correct and terms that are sometimes misleading, but enjoy widespread use in the NMR spectroscopy convention. The essential tools in quantum mechanics are outlined, product operator descriptions are used frequently and repetitively, that enhances understanding and provides more practice. Pictorial representations have been given where possible, a view-point beginners like myself find very useful.
One drawback, is a careful side-lining of the very important technique of using pulse-field gradients, although their cousin technique, named pulse-cycles is quite elaborately explained. I hope, the next issue of the book would also cover up this important technique. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book - information overload
This is a very useful reference to have if you work extensively on HPLC. I find its of more use to understand concepts ...there is a lot of information here.

Which means - if you are looking for a solution to a problem and you want to research separation theory - a great book.

If your looking for a quick fix to an HPLC problem - not as good. This is a detailed, extensive and well written text on HPLC Method development - wish there was more on validation here though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plactical and Rational method Development!
Rational Method development for HPLC is resented. Instruction of rational development of 3-solvent separation system is excellent. This book also has useful know-hows and tools in practical laboratory experiments, such as strength of hydrogen bonding of base silica and nomograph for estimation of "solvent strength" for reversed phase HPLC.

5-0 out of 5 stars Second Edition updated
The 1st edition (the 1980 version) was the gold standard of electrochemistry books, and the authors have done an excellent job of revision for the 2001 2nd edition. In particular, the sections on impedance and modern pulse methods flow nicely. The spectroscopy section has been updated as well. I have not worked many problems, but they seem useful in elucidating concepts. The mathematics is of a higher order than one expects from electrochemistry, showing the impact of kinetics on electrode processes nicely. I recommend this text for electrochemistry courses highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference
This is a very complete and thorough book, and covers all of the fundamentals. It suffers from being somewhat out-of-date (1980), so it does not cover modern techniques (e.g., x-ray, STM) or single-crystal electrodes.

It can be rough for the first-time student, but it's a must for the serious researcher. I often spend hours working on a problem, only to discover the answer is buried in here! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Lousy textbook, Chemistry students beware!
I have had nothing but problems with this book. The practice problems in the chapter do not reflect the ones at the end of the chapter, which pretty much leaves it up to you to figure out what is going on. The chapters are not well written in the first place! Very hard to follow! There is no supplemental solution manual to follow along with so you can see how the practice problems were solved. I could go on and on. In general, possibly the worst chemistry text I have ever had to use.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average
Reasonably solid text, but far to many errors. A source of frusrtration for anyone trying to learn quickly.

1-0 out of 5 stars awful textbook
Obviously I am a disgruntled chemistry student. I will be graduating Cum Laude this spring, and I just suffered through Quantitative Analysis using this book. The problems do not match the examples, there is little background given to the concepts described, and there is no study guide that shows the methods needed to solve problems. My Thermal Physics instructor finally gave up using another Saunders book for the same reasons. Saunders books are more devoted to working problems than describing or teaching the processes that occur. I urge any instructors considering this book to look for a different text!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Toatal Analytical chemistry
Indepth coverage by the author is the most creditable aspect of the book. The book is comprehensive and for any one it is like a complete motion picture(from beginning to the end) about the subject of analytical chemistry. The negative side is that the number of problems covered in certain topics as qualitative analysis is less. But it is way ahead as far as the depth of coverage is concerned.I suggest that any body interested in the subject of analytical chemistry must take a look at this book. ... Book Description

Comprehensive, up-to-date coverage of a revolutionary technique Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) has completely changed the way physicists, chemists, and biologists view the study of large molecules. The technique derives detailed information about molecular weights and structures from extremely small sample quantities. ESI-MS can create highly charged forms of very high molecular weight compounds, it is naturally compatible with many types of separation techniques, and it allows noncovalent interactions between molecules in solution to be preserved in the gas phase. But many researchers may not use the technique to its full potential because they are unfamiliar with the different perspectives of its underlying processes, the varied approaches to implementation, and the wide-ranging utility of the technique.

In this book, Richard B. Cole and an assemblage of leading researchers present a single-volume compilation of different approaches to the understanding and exploitation of ESI-MS. This comprehensive guide:
* Examines the physical and chemical aspects of the electrospray process and describes the events involved in ion formation as well as the electro-chemical phenomena that are central to charged droplet formation during the process
* Explores the coupling of electrospray ionization to various mass spectrometers, including quadrupole, magnetic, time-of-flight, quadrupole ion trap, and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance instruments
* Describes recent progress in interfacing ESI with solution-based separation techniques, including liquid chromatography and capillary electrophoresis
* Charts the rapid development of ESI applications and categorizes them by compound type: peptides and proteins, nucleic acids and their constituents, carbohydrates and lipids, small molecules related to pharmacology and drug metabolism, and organometallics and inorganic compounds

Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry is the indispensable handbook and reference for anyone who wishes to understand, implement, or apply this technique, including researchers in chemistry, metallochemistry, biochemistry, biology, pharmacology, and physics.
