Book Description

"WHAT DOES NOT NEED TO BE BIG, WILL BE SMALL", a word by an engineer at a recent conference on chips technology. This sentence is particularly true for chemistry. Microfabrication technology emerged from microelectronics into areas like mechanics and now chemistry and biology. The engineering of micron and submicron sized features on the surface of silicon, glass and polymers opens a whole new world. Micromotors smaller than human hair have been fabricated and they work fine. It is the declared goal of the authors to bring these different worlds together in this volume. Authors have been carefully chosen to guarantee for the quality of the contents. An engineer, a chemist or a biologist will find new impulses from the various chapters in this book. ... Read more

Book Description

High-resolution continuum source atomic absorption spectrometry (HR-CS AAS) is the most revolutionary innovation since the introduction of AAS in 1955. Here, the authors provide the first complete and comprehensive discussion of HR-CS AAS and its application to the analysis of a variety of difficult matrices. Published just in time with the first commercial instrument available for this new technique, the book is a must for all those who want to know more about HR-CS AAS, and in particular for all future users.
The advantages of the new technique over conventional line-source AAS are clearly demonstrated using practical examples and numerous figures, many in full color. HR-CS AAS is overcoming essentially all the remaining limitations of established AAS, particularly the notorious problem of accurate background measurement and correction. Using a continuum radiation source and a CCD array detector makes the spectral environment visible to several tenths of a nanometer on both sides of the analytical line, tremendously facilitating method development and elimination of interferences.
Conceived as a supplement to the standard reference work on AAS by B. Welz and M. Sperling, this book does not repeat such fundamentals as the principles of atomizers or atomization mechanisms. Instead, it is strictly focused on new and additional information required to profit from HR-CS AAS. It presents characteristic concentration for flame atomization and characteristic mass data for electrothermal atomization for all elements, as well as listing numerous secondary lines of lower sensitivity for the determination of higher analyte concentrations. The highly resolved molecular absorption spectra of nitric, sulfuric and phosphoric acids, observed in an air-acetylene flame, which are depicted together with the atomic lines of all elements, make it possible to predict potential spectral interferences.

Book Description

Unifies the complex welter of techniques used for chemical separations by clearly formulating the concepts that are common to them. The mass transport phenomena underlying all separation processes are developed in a simple physical-mathematical form. The limitations and optimum performance of alternative separation techniques and the factors enhancing and limiting separation power can thus be described and explored. Generously illustrated and contains numerous exercises. Long awaited in the scientific community, it breaks new ground in understanding separation processes. ... Read more

Book Description

This book offers a concise introduction to one of the most important modern analytical methods. Accordingly, its emphasis is on practical guidance. Discussion of the underlying theory is restricted to the bare minimum.

It gives practical instruction in the operation of spectrometers, sample preparation and measurement techniques. Carefully selected examples guide readers in the qualitative interpretation of spectra and in the application of computers, and provide an insight into the latest developments in the field. The book also includes sections on quantitative determination and specialist applications, plus references to the more advanced literature. It is organized such that individual chapters can be studied independently of each other.

A solid introduction to practical IR spectroscopy for both students and practitioners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Either theories or applications, the book is satisfied.
Although I have done SPE for several years, I was surprised that this book can brought me so much more ideas and concepts. This readable book shows not only how but also why to choose an approach/adsorbent. Detailed but concise descriptions of SPE theories on reversed/normal phase and ion exchange are suitable for both novices and aces. Considerations on silica- and polymer-based adsorbent are crucial to real-world situations. Updated information and critical comparisons of existing products will save readers lots of time and cost to choose a right one. The bottom line is that the book enables SPE users to solve problems systematically instead of try-and -error. ... Read more
