Book Description

This book is a must for every synthetic chemist. With didactic skill and clarity, K. C. Nicolaou and E. Sorensen present the most remarkable and ingenious total syntheses from outstanding synthetic organic chemists.

To make the complex strategies more accessible, especially to the novice, each total synthesis is analyzed retrosynthetically. The authors then carefully explain each synthetic step and give hints on alternative methods and potential pitfalls. Numerous references to useful reviews and the original literature make this book an indispensable source of further information.

Special emphasis is placed on the skillful use of graphics and schemes: Retrosynthetic analyses, reaction sequences, and stereochemically crucial steps are presented in boxed sections within the text. For easy reference, key intermediates are also shown in the margins.

Graduate students and researchers alike will find this book a gold mine of useful information essential for their daily work. Every synthetic organic chemist will want to have a copy on his or her desk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classics in Total Synthesis Revisited
The more I read and study out from the book, the more I appreciate the beauty of it. Nicolaou and Sorensen's Classics in Total Synthesis is the most widely consulted title on organic synthesis. As many have commented, this book is a must for every synthetic organic chemist, organic student and researcher.

Released in 1995, despite the advances in synthetic methodology, Nicolaou has presented some of the most remarkable and ingenious total syntheses from laboratories of the world's most prominent organic chemists. Molecules adopted include strychnine, prostaglandin, progesterone, vitamin B12, erythronolide B, monensin, endiandric acids, biotin, hirsutene, capnellene, methyl homosecodaphniphyllate, calicheamicin and more.

Nicaolaou has done an incredible favor to make the strategies more understandable and accesible. For each molecule, the total synthesis begins with a thorough retrosynthetic analysis. Sometimes more than one retrosynthetic routes are introduced in order to show the possibilities of finding the most efficient synthesis.

Nicoloau then meticulously describle each step in synthesis with referral to important named reactions such as the Noyori assymmetric reduction, Luche reaction, Johnson Claisen rearrangement, Julia olefination, etc. With such didatic skill and clarity, Nicoloau has taught the gist of synthesizing complex molecules from commercially available building blocks. A great way to use the book and learn organic synthesis would be to write down every single step on a separate piece of paper and understand what each step does in the overall total synthesis. The synthesis steps and important reactions are presented in schemes with blue background sections, with emphasis on asymmetric synthesis, catalysts, stereochemistry and mechanism. Major reaction intermediates are presented at the margin.

Chemical synthesis relies heavily on chemical literature research. Nicoloau also provides numerous references in each total synthesis for further studies and consultation. Nicoloau has made organic synthesis fun and approachable. Every synthetic chemist should own a copy of Nicolaou.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Could Be The Only Synthesis Book You Need...
A graduate student strongly recommended me to get this book and start reading. At first intimidated by the complex synthesis steps and unfamiliar reagents, the Nicolaou synthesis book is a must read for organic students and chemists. Unlike "The Logic of Chemical Synthesis" (no doubt is also well-written), Nicolaou's "Classics in Total Synthesis" is a pictorial account of some of the representative syntheses of natural products. The detailed, well-written text discusses total synthesis work of chemists such as Heathcock, Corey, Evans, and Nicolaou himself. Each synthesis is preceded with the historical background and significance. A detailed synthetic scheme is included with detailed discussion of each intemediate and inidvidual step. Reader will surely learn a great deal by working through each synthetic step with a pencil and paper. While most advanced organic texts discuss the typical traditional methods in synthetic chemistry, Nicolaou discusses practical approach to synthesizing complex stereospecific compounds. Corey's "The Logic of Chemical Syntheses" might have the similar scope in organic synthesis, yet Nicolaou will be more reader-friendly especially for beginning students in organic synthesis. Nicolaou presents not only the tactics of the subject, it also brings out the beauty of the art of total synthesis. A good read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must buy
If you are wondering whether or not you should buy this book - you should! Why? You will not find a better, more in-depth, fun-to-look-at, or interesting book about total syntheses than this one by K.C. Nicolaou at Scripps. I promise that you will really enjoy this book, especially if you are a graduate student in organic chemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for synthetic organic chemists
This is an impressive collection of 36 syntheses. Each chapter describes a different synthesis. Included are a retrosynthetic analysis(very helpful for those learning the art of total synthesis), the total synthesis(explaining key steps along the way and why the reaction gave the products it did) and then some conclusions. The appendix in chapter 22, on Catalytic Asymetric Reactions is very useful. If you bought "The Logic of Chemical Synthesis' and were dissapointed, don't let that scare you from this book. It is well worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute must for organic synthetic chemists!
If you want to do (total) synthesis yourself it is an absolute must to read this book. Not the book itself, but the synthesis described are brilliant. Even if some of them are 'old' it is great to see the progress synthetic chemistry made within the last 20-30 years. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text and reference
The Modern Electrochemistry volumes are truly excellent textbooks and references for all aspects of electrochemistry.
Whether you're dealing with corrosion, electrolytic processes, batteries, or biochemistry, the electrochemistry is fully explained here. The authors go into a great deal of detail topics while maintaining a very familiar, easy-to-read tone. There are also plenty of interesting historical footnotes which serve to lighten the text.

These books are written for electrochemists interested in the chemical mechanisms behind electrochemical processes. Applications of these processes are treated very briefly. If you are more interested in real-world applications of these processes, other texts may serve you better.

The text comes in three volumes, which is problematic. It is difficult to find all three at most booksellers. Many online booksellers (including Amazon) don't distinguish between the volumes in their catalogs; I had to go by ISBN numbers to ensure I got the complete set. But it was well worth the trouble.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bible of Electrochemistry Education

The difference of this second Ed. from the first one is huge; the author actually rewrote ca. 50% of the first volume (Ionics) and ca. 70% of the second volume (Electrodics, still in writing), covering literature up to later 90's.

For classroom use, the most important addition of the edition is the problem set, which are extremely helpful for students on introductory level.

It was a great honor of me to be invited by the author to write part of the problem sets for all chapters in Vol.1 and a few chapters in Vol.2, and I can tell you that the author and the problem writers put in a lot of effort to elucidate the fundamental electrochemistry while also help original thinkings of the students on more advanced electrochemistry issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best introductory book in Electrochemistry
This book By Bockris and Reddy, is the best book you can hope to lay your hands, if you are looking for an good introduction and thorough description of the fundamentals. This is definetely one book, or rather two books which no library should be without, including libraries of graudate students. The style of the authors is extremely simple, and reading this book is like reading a story book. you would find it quite difficult to keep the book down once you have picked it up.

An absolutely fantastic book, though slightly on the costlier side. ... Read more

Book Description

A unique practical guide to building, using, and maintaining a complete GC/MS system.

Though gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) is one of the most effective and popular methods of separating, identifying, and quantifying compounds in complex mixtures, there have been no comprehensive handbooks to date that clearly explain the setup and maintenance of a functional GC/MS system. Now Marvin and Christopher McMaster have created the hands-on resource that researchers and students need to get their own systems up and running quickly. Covering everything from necessary components to tuning, troubleshooting, and processing data, it allows even those with little prior knowledge of GC/MS to perform their own analyses and gather the data they require. GC/MS: A Practical User's Guide contains:
* Full coverage of vital equipment, including the function, costs, and advantages of both desktop and floor-standing systems
* A walkthrough of a basic GC/MS analysis and an examination of key methods of structural data interpretation
* Extensive information on GC/MS system optimization
* An exploration of the various research and environmental uses of GC/MS systems
* An extended section on liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry to enhance comprehension of the gas method.

For organic, analytical, clinical, environmental, and forensic chemists in all types of laboratories-and for students in all of these specialties -this book will be an invaluable companion for years to come.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to GC-MS
GC/MS should be helpful to the novice or student who has never used GC-MS before and who has had minimal experience with GC. It is a little disappointing that about 20% of the text covers material about GC that any experienced GC user should already know.
The book contains an easy to understand explanation about how a mass spectrometer works. Some additional details or diagrams could have clarified the description of how the DC/RF field separates the mass fragments in the quadrupole analyzer; but otherwise the text is crystal clear. Information about tuning and maintaining the mass spectrometer is well presented and the authors provide some helpful suggestions including a way to tell during the tuning process that the source needs cleaning. More information about spectral interpretation would have been appreciated but is probably outside the scope of the book.
This book belongs on the library shelves of colleges with undergraduate chemistry programs and would be helpful in industrial and environmental laboratories as an introduction for chemists and technicians new to the field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic list of tips for a GC/MS user

Hardbound. This book concentrates on industrially relevant reactions which are catalyzed by heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts. Homogeneous catalysis by metal complexes is treated jointly with heterogeneous catalysis using metallic and non-metallic solids. In both areas the high degree of sophistication of spectroscopic techniques and theoretical modelling has led to an enormous increase in our understanding at the molecular level. This holds for the kinetics of the reactions and the reactivities of the catalysts, as well as for the syntheses of the catalytic materials. The development of catalysis science since the first edition of this book has necessitated a thorough revision, including special chapters on biocatalysis, catalyst characterization and adsorption methods. The multidisciplinary nature of catalysis is reflected in the choice of a novel combination of basic disciplines which will be refreshing and inspiring to readers. ... Read more

Book Description

Chiral Chromatography Thomas E. Beesley Advanced Separation Technologies Inc., Whippany, New Jersey, USA Raymond P. W. Scott Chemistry Department, Georgetown University, Washington DC, USA and Chemistry Department, Birkbeck College, University of London, UK Analytical techniques based on separation processes, such as chromatography and electrophoresis, are finding a growing range of applications in chemical, pharmaceutical and clinical laboratories. The Wiley Separation Science Series provides the analyst in these laboratories with well-focused books covering individual techniques, so that they can be applied more efficiently and effectively to contemporary analytical problems. The different enantiomers of a drug can exhibit widely different physiological activity in degree and nature. As a result, the separation and identification of enantiomers is now a very important analytical problem and chiral chromatography is the natural technique to apply to the resolution of such mixtures. Chiral Chromatography provides the reader with a basic understanding of the nature of chromatographic separations and relates the principles specifically to the separation of enantiomers. The following information is included:
* chiral separations involving both gas and liquid chromatography
* descriptions of the apparatus used for both techniques
* detailed discussion on the retention mechanism that results in chiral selectivity
* the structure and synthesis of a wide range of chirally active stationary phases used in both gas and liquid chromatography
* preparative applications for large scale purification of enantiomers
* applications of capillary electrophoresis and capillary electrochromatography.
In addition to the above, a large number of examples of the separation of both commercially and physiologically interesting chiral mixtures are given, as is a detailed discussion on the mechanism of selectivity of each example. Thomas Beesley was founder and is the CEO for a leading manufacturer of chiral stationary phases and has published papers on TLC, HPLC and chiral separations involving cyclodextrins. He has also coauthored papers with Daniel W. Armstrong, an expert on modern cyclodextrin columns. Raymond Scott has worked in the field of separation science for over 40 years and has contributed extensively to the development of both gas and liquid chromatography publishing over 160 papers on the subjects.

The new chapter 'physical fundamentals' describes the basic principles of AAS. The development of AAS is now described in a separate chapter. Further new chapters are devoted to the latest developments in the field of flow injection and the use of computers for laboratory automation. Methodological progress e. g. speciation analysis is also covered in this new edition.

The index and the extensive bibliography make this book a unique source of information. It will prove useful not only for analytical chemists, out also spectroscopists in industry, institutes, and universities. Atomic Absorption Spectrometry will also be invaluable for clinics and research institutes in the fields of biochemistry, medicine, food technology, geology, metallurgy, petrochemistry, and mineralogy.

4-0 out of 5 stars FTIR Bible
This is a great reference for anyone designing or using FTIR instruments. This book is really intended for the advanced users and is worth the price. The only major drawback is that it is getting a little dated.

The book is really geared to the chemist, however, additional material on alignment techniques and a more complete and jointed discussion on design trade-offs and instrument characterization would make it much more useful to other users.

Bottom line: It is still a great reference

4-0 out of 5 stars The Classic Reference on FTIR
This book is the Bible of FTIR, written by the twin gods of FTIR, Griffiths and DeHaseth. It contains as complete an introduction to the theory and practice of this field as is available. Anyone who wants a detailed understanding of this field, and in particular how FTIRs work, should own this book. However...there are 2 reasons why I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5.

1. The book is written at a rather advanced level, and is full of mathematics. For doctorate level scientists and engineers this is fine, but it blows away anyone without the appropriate math and science background. As a result, beginners to the field are often times frustrated with this book. The book is more approriate for instrument designers and lab managers than it is for the average technician running spectra.

2. The book was written in 1986, and parts of it are terribly outdated. Not surprisingly, discussions of specific computers, software, and instruments were outdated years ago. Things that the book predicts will happen, have long ago come to pass. Certain important new developments, such as IR Microscopy, FT-Raman, and new applications of Step Scanning, are totally missing. Come on guys...its time for a new edition. ... Read more
