Book Description

Breakthroughs in combinatorial chemistry and molecular biology, as well as an overall industry trend toward accelerated development, mean the rate of sample generation now far exceeds the rate of sample analysis in the pursuit of producing new and better pharmaceuticals. LC/MS is an analytical tool that helps the researcher identify the most promising sample early in the selection process, effectively creating a shortcut to finding new drugs. This book is the first to describe LC/MS applications within the context of drug development, including the discovery, preclinical, clinical, and manufacturing phases.
In addition to the thorough technical analysis of this tool, LC/MS Applications in Drug Development provides perspective on the significant changes in strategies for pharmaceutical analysis. A process overview of drug development from an analytical point of view is provided along with essential data required to successfully bring a drug to market. The incorporation of LC/MS is illustrated from target to product. Chapters pertaining to the discovery process itself include:

-Proteomics
-Glycoprotein Mapping
-Natural Products Dereplication
-Lead Identification Screening
-Open-Access LC/MS
-In Vitro Drug Screening

Written for both the analytical chemist who uses LC/MS applications and the pharmaceutical scientist who works with the drugs they produce, LC/MS Applications in Drug Development is the premier reference on the subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An absorbing intermediate to advanced level chemical text
Now in an updated second edition, Chemistry Connections: The Chemical Basis Of Everyday Phenomena is an amazing volume with chapters based around answers to questions such as "What causes an egg to crack if it's boiled too rapidly?"; "Why do carbonated drinks go flat as they warm?"; "Why do lightsticks glow?"; "How does a timed-release medicine work?"; and much, much more. The collaborative effort of Kerry K. Karukstis (Professor of Chemistry, Harvey Mudd College) and Gerald R. Van Hecke (Professor of Chemistry, Harvey Mudd College), Chemistry Connections is an absorbing intermediate to advanced level chemical text that makes learning chemistry a lot of fun in some unique but quite effective ways.

2-0 out of 5 stars there are better alternatives
Overall this book and is fairly successful in its aim of explaining a selection of everyday chemical phenomena in terms accssible to most people. There are a couple of points which really let it down though.
First, the presentation of the material and the diagrams could be greatly improved. For example, there is a "3-D" structure of EDTA given. In fact, it just seems to be a 2-D Chemdraw diagram pasted in to Chem3D! It gives no sense of how the dispostion of the oxygen and nitrogen atoms allow EDTA to surround the metal centre thus making it an effective metal sequestering agent.
Second, certain sections go in to extraordinary detail concerning the physical chemistry of certain phenomena. Rather complicated equations and diagrams are presented which don't aid the reader in really understanding conceptualising the processe which are described.
Third, annoyingly, temperatures are presented only in Fahrenheit. Hello!? Did the authors not consider that they may have readers outside of the US.....

4-0 out of 5 stars Great teacher resource
I found Chemistry Connections very interesting and informative. I am a high school science teacher and I already have a strong background in chemistry. The format presents infomation on each question at multiple levels of sophistication, from introductory information accessible without much knowledge of chemistry to in-depth information on specific molecular structures and interactions. This book would be a great resource for chemistry teachers. My only critisism is that the writing style could be a bit more engaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating without forsaking the science
Chemistry Connections is an excellent, well-written book that I found extremely easy and fun to read. It is a fascinating book for both the layperson and the scientist, presenting explanations of everyday phenomena that all of us have wondered about at one time or another. Things like household cleaners, paper money, seashells, shampoo, and chili pepper are explained on a simplified chemical basis, and then on a more detailed scientific basis. Chemical structures and some reactions are presented, as well as very current references and websites on each topic. This has got to be the most entertaining chemistry book I have every read! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the basics
This book covers the basics of mass spectra, and how to interpret them by hand. While it doesn't reallly go into modern developments, its certainly a great way to get started thinking about mass spectroscopy in general. Probably most useful for an undergras course in spectroscopy, which is where I first came across it. The nice thing is it has lots of exercises for the reader that are actually alot of fun. Does not, unfortunately, address protein identification and sequencing by mass spec at al, so while I recommend this book as a starting point, a biologically oriented reader would best use this book in conjunction with a more protein-specific reference.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beginners text
A good introduction to classical mass spectrometry though most of the recent developments in the field are not covered. Most suitable for undergraduates. This edition corrects some of the organizational blunders in earlier forms ; previously a chapter on "Other Ionization Techniques" included sections on negative ions and icrs (?).

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Book for Mass Spectrometry
The book is commonly used as a text book on Mass Spectrometry at graduate or undergraduate level. Very nice for organic mass spectrometry. I even read a Chinese version back home.

The examples are good, exercises have answers at the end of book: great for self-practicing. It is too bad that this book does not cover the currently very hot biological mass spectrometry. Anyway this is a book you have to read at least twice if you want to be in the field of mass spectrometry.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good mass spec reference.
A good reference to have on your desk. Best for graduate students or undergrads. Largely irrelevant for todays working chemist. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Broad, thorough introduction
I'm not a bench chemist, but I needed a quick survey of how mass spectroscopy is used in handling proteins and other big biomolecules. This book was it.

Although brief, it is thorough and well-organized. The first two chapters are mostly an introduction. Chapter 1 mostly just states the problem being solved. The next chapter is a brief introduction to older technologies, inclduding chemical techiques and 60s-80s mass spec technique. The next two chapters summarize modern mass spec hardware, then start to show how proteins behave in the environment inside the instrument. That gives the fundamentals of protein sequencing: how the molecules break down, and how the fragments help recreate the molecule. The authors go through a few examples in detail, starting from a mass spectrogram and moving forward to sequence. I was especially impressed by the examples that fail. Mass spec analysis is not a magic wand for producing sequences, it is a deductive process, and can not complete an analysis when clues are missing or ambiguous.

The next three chapters are not about mass spec directly. Instead, they discuss how samples are prepared for analysis. This includes the clearest, most informative description of gel electrophoresis that I've seen, along with features of gel chemistry that do or do not interfere with mass spec measurements. This includes a discussion of protein digests, enzymatically produced fragments, and their place in analysis. I would have liked a little more discussion about combining information from digests produced by different enzymes, but no book can cover everything.

The last three chapters extend the discussion of analysis, working upwards from fragments to complete protein sequences. The three chapters respectively address three topics: using standard internet databases for recognizing fragments of known proteins, using combinations of strategies to analyze novel protein, and using mass spec to identify post-translational modifications. That last one suffers from brevity; perhaps it was only meant to define a problem that deserves a whole book of its own.

Despite its throughness, the authors resist the urge for boggling detail. They present detail up to the point needed for understanding the mechanism and meaning of their topics, then stop. Lots of other writing would benefit from that kind of restraint.

I came away from this book well-informed, and ready to address specific topics in greater detail. That was exactly what I wanted. I recommend this book very highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Protein Sequencing ......" a must to read
Michael Kinter has presented the topic in a scientific yet enjoyable format. I found the information to be extremely interesting and beneficial in my laboratory. Lets face it folks this isn't the easiest nor most interesting topic to write about. Job well done DR. Kinter. I only have one criticism, there should have been more photos and illustrations. Get your copies quick this will no doubt be on the NewYork times best seller list before long. ... Read more

This book presents, for the first time, a unified treatment of the quantum mechanisms of magnetic resonance, including both nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron spin resonance (ESR). Magnetic resonance is perhaps the most advanced type of spectroscopy and it is applied in biology, chemistry, physics, material science, and medicine. If applied in conjunction with spectroscopy, the imaging version of magnetic resonance has no counterpart in any type of experimental technique.

The authors present explanations and applications from fundamental to advanced levels. Additionally, they pave the way to successfully simulating magnetic resonance phenomena numerically through an accompanying CD-ROM.

5-0 out of 5 stars folks: the hype is true
I will tell you this: for those people out there who love German people's names, Volker Achim Weberruß's name will not disappoint. And his book... ach, his book-- I will just say this: it lives up to his name.

That is what I will say.

Additionally, I will say that reading this book, you feel ravished by the technical command Volker Achim Weberruß has over his computational domain-- you feel like a young child, in the hands of a brutish master. You feel like a life raft cradled in a tempest-loving sea. You are at his mercy.

Weberruß is the Mayor of Science,, folks.

I will also say this: I was a little disappointed in the appendix, though. Not quite meaty enough, for my taste, and I found several notable ommissions ("hyponautical quadraticism" was mentioned on pages 133 and 411, though the topic was apparently not substantial enough to warrant an appendixical mention). But for that I fault the editor, not Volker Achim Weberruß.

Volker Achim Weberruß is the champion of the history of science of the universe.
