5-0 out of 5 stars So brilliant that I cried--twice!
This is without a doubt the most brilliant and poignant depiction of HPLC and CE of biomolecules in modern history. My extreme hyperactivity disorder usually means that I'm not able to sit still for such weighty topics--not without large amounts of abused Ritalin; but Cunico's work was so compelling and finely wrought that I found myself spellbound, even when drunk, even when driving in the backseat of a stolen car across the Mexican border at Tecate. I am not going to recommend drinking heavily and stealing cars. But I do recommend BASIC HPLC and CE OF BIOMOLECULES by Robert L. Cunico. By the way, I am extremely drunk right now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic HPLC and CE of Biomolecules
This is a book that should be on the desk of anyone who is involved in analytical development of biomolecules and biopharmaceuticals. The content is well organized and written in a format that is easy to grasp and understand. The content covers almost all the different modalities of HPLC analyses and applications and provides real life examples of the techniques. It includes innumerable suggestions on how best to develop a validatable HPLC method and analyze the data appropriately.

I would highly recommend this book to both new and old members of biotechnology, especially the developmental, analytical, and quality assurance groups where there is frequently a need to implement a solid reliable method for analyzing biomolecules in a more rational fashion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for practising analytical chemists
This text is an excellent reference for practising analytical chemists. As the title indicates, the emphasis is on analytical chemistry, not physical chemistry. It presents the physical aspects of electrochemical phenomena lucidly, without getting bogged down in the tedium of deriving & solving diffusion equations. The text is comprehensive in treating the major electroanalytical experiments, written by leaders in their respective fields. I give this to graduate students in analytical chemistry and find that they really like it. It is well-referenced, has good figures & tables, and is reasonably priced. This text is a must for transferring your ideas for experiments to the bench.

Book Description

This work-book will guide you safely, in step-by-step descriptions, through every detail of the NMR experiments within, beginning with 1D routine experiments and ending with a series of advanced 3D experiments on a protein:

· Which experiment can best yield the desired information?
· How must the chosen experiment be performed?
· How does one read the required information from the spectrum?
· How does this particular pulse sequence work?
· Which other experiments give similar information?

This third edition of the book, following its two highly successful predecessors, has been revised and expanded to 206 experiments. They are organized in 15 chapters, covering test procedures and routine spectra, variable temperature measurements, the use of auxiliary reagents, 1D multipulse experiments, spectra of heteronuclides, and the application of selective pulses. The second and third dimensions are introduced using pulsed field gradients, and experiments on solid state materials are described. A key part describes 3D experiments on the protein ubiquitin with 76 amino acids.

What is new in this third edition?

1. 24 new experiments have been inserted into the 14 chapters that were in the 2nd edition, e.g., alpha/beta-SELINCOR-TOCSY, WET, DOSY, ct-COSY, HMSC, HSQC with adiabatic pulses, HETLOC. J-resolved HMBC, (1,1)- and (1,n)-ADEQUATE, STD, REDOR, and HR-MAS.
2. 20 new protein NMR experiments have been specially devised and are collected in the newly added Chapter 15, ProteinNMR, for which one needs a special model sample: fully 13C- and 15N-labeled human ubiquitin. Techniques used include the constant time principle, the PEP method, filters, gradient selection, and the echo/anti-echo procedure.

The guide has been written by experts in this field, following the principle of learning by doing: all the experiments have been specially performed for this book, exactly as described and shown in the spectra that are reproduced. Being a reference source and work-book for the NMR laboratory as well as a textbook, it is a must for every scientist working with NMR, as well as for students preparing for their laboratory courses

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best understandable text!
Although I am an undergraduate physics student but this is one of the best book on the vibrational spectroscopy, I used it to understand the application of the group theory and molecular vibrations.
Harris and Bertolucci wrote the text in a clear way with examples. I am only half way through the book but the way the text is presented, its evident how the rest of the book will be, Clear and to the point. Only minus point is that the character tables are not derived and are given in appendix and it also lacks the representation theory but after all it is a book on Spectroscopy and not on Group theory so I may not complain. In my openion, this book can be compared with Cotton and Bishop and if I have to understand the application of group theory and molecular vibrations I will certainly pick up Harris & Bertolucci.

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting little cookie of a book...
This is probably one of the most useful books that deals with the subject of Molecular symmetry and how it applies to the derivation of IR Spectra, Molecular Orbital Theory, and UV VIS spec. Some parts can be sparse (Term symbol section is a little confusing at first go) so it pays to have a good Quant. book next to you... Lots of problems that are all solved. Excellent reference for some basic QM problems as well... Perhaps the best thing about this book is the fact that it is not (expensive).... So if you have the dosh, then go for it and finally figure out Group Theory and how it relates to IR and everything else...

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview of Spectroscopy for Undergrads & Grads
Harris and Bertolucci have written an excellent overview of general spectroscopy theory, appropriate for both undergraduate and graduate students. As a chemist, I found it very helpful as I took introductory quantum mechanics in graduate school and later used it as a practical guide to interpreting and understanding infrared spectra as a graduate student.

For the price, this is one of the best bargains available to students. Consider other Dover publications for great prices as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good summary for the USA
Quite a short book, but it's not a huge topic. Oriented towards the forensic science arena in the USA, it doesn't offer any tips for internationalizing its summaries, so the international reader is left with little idea of the differences in the way the field is structured. That said, it does summarize the opportunities available for general criminalists, pathologists, toxicologists, crime scene managers and so on, and gives rough salary, training estimates, brief job descriptions, along with example job advertisements for each section.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great material, regular text...
The book is subdivided into only 3 of the 4 classical methods for spectrometric identification of compounds: IR, MS, and finally NMR (covering 1H, 13C and very little of 19F and 31P). UV is left out in this edition, so maybe getting a hold of the old edition's UV chapter (which is extremely well-written) might be desired. The MS and the IR chapters are also well-written and explained out. It is in the main technique (NMR) that the author fails to deliver the subject in a straightforward manner and lacks what I think is most important in this field: a large number of exercises and problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important book
This book provide a the basis of the fundamentals of Spectroscopy in many fields (IR, HNMR, CNMR, DEPT, COSY, HMBC, HMQC, TOCSY, MS, and much more) It has many real problems in an special chapter. And the most important, it has a lot of important tables and spectrums.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good in NMR Spectra analysis information, but weak elsewhere
This book lacked information in my opinion. Silverstein started a good project but just didn't give enough information about IR interpretation, mass spec, C-13 NMR, etc. He focussed on 2-D NMR a great deal, and I believe that there are much better textbooks on this subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reference that is worth it's weight in Gold
A valuable refernce for any organic chemist in the early years of a career in industry or as a graduate student. Aviods being bogged down in quantum theory and explains NMR in a clear concise manner. I have read the first 1/3 and couldn't be more pleased. I would also recommend Andrew Derome as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Start
This book is excellent for the person new to the concepts and applications of FTIR spectroscopy. Smith uses clear and concise language that is easy to interpret. Other books about the same subject are very difficult to read, and the language is too technical. This book provides an excellent base to build your knowledge of the subject on. Hats off to Dr. Smith - his book has helped me a lot.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not throw away your money!
This book use very simplistic explanation of FTIR Spectroscopy. It is oriented on non-technical person with no background in physics. At the same time the terminology used requires that background. Result: confusion and disappointment. Not to mistake an honorable reader, the word "Fundamentals" in the title should be replaced with something like " Introduction.... for technicians". ...
