Book Description

This rigorous and engaging book presents the basic theories underlying spectroscopy while incorporating modern viewpoints of practical utility in spectroscopy research. Written in a clear, jargon-free style, it covers the quantum mechanical theoretical basis of spectroscopy, modern innovations in spectroscopy theory, such as time-dependent theory, and practical applications of spectroscopy research, including the influence of condensed phases.Begins with a brief review of quantum mechanical principles, then moves on to such areas as the properties of light, bulk electric and magnetic properties of matter, fundamental theories of spectroscopic techniques, experimental arrangements, and finally applications of the electromagnetic spectrum. Studies the time-dependent theoretical approach to interpret frequency domain spectra, allowing readers to focus on the dynamic response of the system. Provides consistent and reasonable notation throughout, frequently uses thought experiments to help readers visualize a physical situation. and poses probing questions in order to stimulate independent thinking and prompt readers to consider potentially paradoxical predictions of theory. For spectroscopists, laser technicians, analytical and physical chemists, and physicists. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, well-written textbook.
One of the few textbooks I have encountered which I consider well written from a both a scientific and a stylistic perspective. Jeanne McHale provides the clearest, most coherent presentation of the book's topic that I have seen. If the reader is encountering the material for the first time, I'd suggest using this book in conjunction with another, as there are details which are skimmed over here in the interest of presenting a cohesive development. But for a clear picture of the field, I don't know a better place to turn!

4-0 out of 5 stars a good introductory text on the subject
This book is a good source for individuals trying to learn the concepts of molecular spectroscopy. It takes care to not jump over the student's head in the presentation of the material, but it does lack the in-depth treatment of subjects needed to really understand why spectra must be the way they are. For graduate level analytical course it would be great, but I think physical chemists might walk away without the understanding they need. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Dated
Standard textbook outlining most spectroscopic techniques as taught at undergraduate level. However, contains an embarrassingly dated treatment of mass spectrometry which can not have been rewritten since the 1970s. No mention of the biggest MS techniques in use today (electrospray and MALDI), a glaring oversight especially in light of Fenn & Tanaka winning Nobel Prizes in 2002 for just these developments. And time-of-flight instruments having a mass range of 5000 and resolution of 200? Several years before this book was published, commercial machines were available with mass ranges well over 100,000 Da and resolutions of 10,000+. Not only poor, but misleading. Overall, a rather derivative book that seems to have been written largely by consultation of more authoritative work (probably an early edition of Williams & Fleming).

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Good Reference on Organic Spectroscopy
The new edition of Pavis might be the twin to Crews' Organic Structural Analysis. This text discusses the fundamentals of 1H NMR, carbon-13 NMR, infrared spectroscopy, UV spectroscopy. The book also includes a section on 2D NMR. Pavia should not be missed by advanced undergraduate students who pursue research and practicing chemists who need quick reference on interpreting spectra.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Introductory Reference
This book is probably the best introductory reference on spectroscopy currently available, and I've checked out pretty much every book on the market right now. I'm a chemist, and this book got me through my senior synthesis and spectroscopy lab. Proton and carbon-13 NMR, IR, GC/MS, and UV/Vis are all covered in the book. It includes many handy tables of characteristic shifts for NMR, characteristic absorbances for IR and UV/Vis, and a nifty table on common GC/MS fragments by m/e. The chapter on 2D NMR is lousy, but that's not really introductory material anyhow. The UV/Vis chapter is kind of cursory, but UV/Vis isn't all that useful.
This is a book that I intend to hang on to for a while.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great books for students in chemistry
I have found this book to a great tool for students of organic chemistry especially those wanting to further their education in graduate school or medical school. It is eay to read and can also be used a "teach yourself" book. I recomend this book to anyone who is a bit shaky in interpreting NMR, IR, and Mass Spec. ... Read more

Techniques in Analytical Chemistry
How to evaluate and validate data from chemical measurements in biological systems-a unique overview
An understanding of chemical measurement processes in biological systems is essential to working in today's life-science and biotechnology industries. This work provides analysts and laboratory professionals with the fundamental knowledge and basic principles they need to tackle the measurement process in the real world. Rather than rehashing traditional analytical techniques, which can be problematic for biological samples, the book emphasizes the highly complex nature of biological systems through such topics as enzyme measurements, enzymes as reagents, immunochemical assays, and assay validation and quality control. It provides a complete overview of principles and methods proven useful in biological systems-from pH, buffers, and spectrophotometry to basic chromatographic techniques. With Chemical Measurements in Biological Systems as their guide, readers will understand the basic principles needed to:
* Read and evaluate an assay method description
* Choose the appropriate method from the vast array of available techniques
* Modify and evaluate an existing method for specific needs
* Set up and run biochemical assays
* Use multistep problem-solving techniques

Book Description

Factor analysis is a mathematical tool for examining a wide range of data sets, with applications especially important to the design of experiments (DOE), spectroscopy, chromatography, and chemometrics. Whereas the first two editions concentrated on standardizing the fundamentals of this emerging discipline, the Third Edition of Factor Analysis in Chemistry, the "bible" of factor analysis, proves a comprehensive handbook at a level that is consistent with the research and design of experiments today.

With the exception of updates, the introductory chapters remain unchanged. Chapter 6 has been edited to focus on evolutionary methods, including window factor analysis, transmutation, and DECRA. Selections on partial least squares and multimode analysis have been expanded and consolidated into two new chapters, 7 and 8. Some of the latest advances in a wide variety of fields, such as chromatography, NMR, biomedicine, environmental science, food, and fuels, are described in the applications chapters (chapters 9 through 12).

Other features of the book include:

  • Provides history of the discipline as well as theory, philosophy, and applications
  • Written for all readership levels: introductory, intermediate, and advanced
  • Explains complicated concepts in simple language without sacrificing mathematical rigor
  • Presents concepts and programs in a style that allows the user to develop programs in any computer language
