Book Description

The study of pharmaceuticals in the environment is a relatively new area of research, which has only just taken off in recent years. It is exceedingly difficult for the individual, in particular those not acquainted with the field to establish  trends and developments. Even specialists will appreciate  this book, as it provides the reader with a well-founded over view.

Folllowing the resounding success of the first edition, this new edition has been brought up to date and greatly extended. It includes the status of research on soil, paying particular attention to field studies in  terrestrial and aquatic environments as well as new substance categories such as tetracyline or chinolon and  the latest results concerning contamination of the environment and risk reduction. In line with the newest developments worldwide there are now many more contributions from international authors. This volume also caters for the new requirements confronting  European and American researchers since publication of the first edition.

Book Description

Clandestine lab operators are not the mad scientists whose genius keeps them pent up in the laboratory contemplating elaborate formulas and mixing exotic chemicals. In fact, their equipment is usually simple, their chemicals household products, and their education basic. Most of the time the elements at the scene are perfectly legal to sell and own. It is only in the combination of all these elements that the lab becomes the scene of a criminal operation. Forensic Investigation of Clandestine Laboratories guides you, step-by-step, through the process of recognizing these illegal manufacturing operations. Then it shows you how to prove it in the courtroom. In non-technical language this book details:How to recognize a clandestine labHow to process the site of a clandestine labHow to analyze evidence in the examination laboratory What to derive from the physical evidenceHow to present the evidence in courtThe identification and investigation a clandestine lab, and the successful prosecution the perpetrators, is a team effort. A collaboration of law enforcement, forensic experts, scientists, and criminal prosecutors is required to present a case that definitively demonstrates how a group of items with legitimate uses are being used to manufacture an illegal controlled substance. Forensic Investigation of Clandestine Laboratories provides you with the information needed to understand how the different pieces of the clandestine lab puzzle fit together and take the steps to not only identify and shut down these operations, but also successfully prosecute the perpetrators. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Still recognized as an important text
The sixth edition of "Elements" was published in 1995, and reviewers familiar with the advances in cartographic technology would be familiar with the great upheaval the field was going through at that time. Work on a seventh edition of this seminal text is currently underway, which should bring the content of the book up to par with recent changes. The book remains an important source of information for both the novice and seasoned cartographer.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is pricey and uneven.
This title is billed as the Sixth Edition, and reflects the coming and going of co-authors. It is too bad that the editor had so little influence. Sections of this book that stick to their cartographic knitting are excellent. Historical information is very intersting. Basic explanations, such as the evolution of ellipsoids is very well done. Some of the writing is so bad it could have been extracted from a sophmore term paper, sprinkled with such inept phrases as "such as", "similarly", "however" and "in fact". The most glaring deficiency is in the area of computer technology. Either this material has not been updated since some earlier edition, or the author(s) are very uncomfortable with the subject matter. As examples: "Most common procedures used by cartographers have been translated into software programs written in special computer languages such as FORTRAN and C." "Today's well-rounded cartographer is routinely involved with these 'canned' (prewritten) mapping programs..." "The professionsal cartographer should, therefor, have a working knowledge of at least one computer language." We are regaled with three pages of detailed obselescent material on computer structure, but only 23 lines of overview on current instrument technology. There is a whole chapter on fonts and lettering, but no algorithm for conversion from Lat-Long to UTM. The central meridians for the UTM zones are not provided, nor is the DoD lettering scheme. One of the responsibilities of a text book is to arrange the subject matter in a structure where it can be easily referenced. This book reads like a series of articles of varying quality published under one cover, with overlap resolution left as an exercise for the reader. ... Read more

Book Description

`In the second edition of Principles I have attempted to maintain the emphasis on basics, while updating the examples to include more recent results from the literature. There is a new chapter providing an overview of extrinisic fluorophores. The discussion of timeresolved measurements has been expanded to two chapters. Quenching has also been expanded in two chapters. Energy transfer and anisotropy have each been expanded to three chapters. There is also a new chapter on fluorescence sensing. To enhance the usefulness of this book as a textbook, most chapters are followed by a set of problems. Sections which describe advanced topics are indicated as such, to allow these sections to be skipped in an introduction course. Glossaries are provided for commonly used acronyms and mathematical symbols. For those wanting additional informtion, the final appendix contains a list of recommended books which expand on various specialized topics.'from the author's Preface ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A most worthy successor to the first edition
In the sixteen years since the appearance of the first edition of Lakowicz's Principles of Fluorescence Spectroscopy, the use of fluorescence as an analytical tool has grown remarkably, especially in instrumentation, available fluorophores, and practical applications. Therefore, it shouldn't be surprising that the second edition of the work has more than doubled in size.

The approach is the same as that in the first edition: fluorescence spectroscopy from the viewpoint of a biophysical chemist. Explanations are clear. References are profuse; they now number well over a thousand and include an additional appendix that cites many books and review articles for additional reading. Figures are also plentiful; no fancy color diagrams a la contemporary biochemistry texts, but basic line drawings, primarily adapted from journal articles.

The first three chapters ("Introduction to Fluorescence", "Instrumentation for Fluorescence Spectroscopy", and "Fluorophores") are an excellent brief (93-page) introduction to the whole field. Most of the remaining 19 chapters are organized around the kinds of photophysical processes and spectroscopic quantities that are relevant to fluorescence. These include very thorough treatments of fluorescence lifetimes, quenching, anisotropy, and energy transfer. There are many examples drawn from journal articles. In addition, the work now covers more of the technological applications of fluorescence, especially in chapters on "Fluorescence Sensing" and "DNA Technology". These give a sense of the great contributions that fluorescence has made to biotechnology.

My own work involves varied applications of fluorescence to biotechnology, and the second edition of Lakowicz is my reference book of choice. It would also be an excellent text for a graduate course on fluorescence in a chemistry or biochemistry department. All in all, this is a most worth successor to the first edition.

Joe Lakowicz has just finished a thorough revision of this classic work, which should be coming out soon. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of 21 CFR Part 11
While everyone has heard about giant companies such as Wal-Mart and General Motors, Fortune magazine occasionally runs articles about huge companies that most people don't know of. Similarly, in the information security space, many people have heard of regulations such as Common Criteria, ISO-17799 and HIPAA. Yet there is a huge regulation that many people know nothing of, namely 21 CFR Part 11.

Title 21 Part 11 of the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (also known as 21 CFR Part 11 or simply Part 11) falls under the authority of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA felt that the risks of falsification, misinterpretation and change without leaving evidence are higher with electronic records than paper records and therefore specific controls are required.

Part 11 deals with the conditions under which the FDA will accept electronic records and electronic signatures as equivalent to paper records and handwritten signatures and electronic New Drug Application (NDA) submissions as equivalent to paper submission.

With that, 21 CFR Part 11: Complete Guide to International Computer Validation is a very good overview of the topic.

The book details how organizations regulated by Part 11 can create a compliance strategy for validated systems.

Anyone needing a quick introduction to Part 11 will find this work valuable.

The only negative to this book is its price; at $180.00, it is extremely expensive. Such a price will make the book unobtainable for most readers. I believe its low Amazon.com Sales Rank of 1,810,979 is due directly to that. ... Read more

Book Description

High Resolution NMR provides a broad treatment of the principles and theory of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as it is used in the chemical sciences. It is written at an "intermediate" level, with mathematics used to augment, rather than replace, clear verbal descriptions of the phenomena. The book is intended to allow a graduate student, advanced undergraduate, or researcher to understand NMR at a fundamental level, and to see illustrations of the applications of NMR to the determination of the structure ofsmall organic molecules and macromolecules, including proteins. Emphasis is on the study of NMR in liquids, but the treatment also includes high resolution NMR in the solid state and the principles of NMR imaging and localized spectroscopy.
Careful attention is given to developing and interrelating four approaches - steady state energy levels, the rotating vector picture, the density matrix, and the product operator formalism. The presentation is based on the assumption that the reader has an acquaintance with the general principles of quantum mechanics, but no extensive background in quantum theory or proficiency in mathematics is required. Likewise, no previous background in NMR is assumed, since the book begins with a description of the basic physics, together with a brief account of the historical development of the field.
This third edition of High Resolution NMR preserves the "conversational" approach of the previous editions that has been well accepted as a teaching tool. However, more than half the material is new, and the remainder has been revised extensively. Problems are included to reinforce concepts in the book.

Key Features
* Uses mathematics to augment, not replace, verbal explanations
* Written in a clear and conversational style
* Follows the successful format and approach of two previous editions
* Revised and updated extensively--about 70 percent of the text is new
* Includes problems and references to additional reading at the end of each chapter

4-0 out of 5 stars Good text for intro, general analytical course(s)
We use this text (now in its 7th edition) for both our Analytical I (chemical analysis) and Analytical II (instrumental analysis) courses. They are both 1-semester courses at the sophomore year, and this text is just the correct level and length to cover both courses. There are a number of broad sections, each of which is divided into several chapters. Roughly the 1st half covers chemical methods and the second half covers the instrumental methods. There are also a few chapters devoted to statistical analysis.

The sections are reasonably independent and can be done in pretty much any order, giving a great degree of flexibility. The text itself is easy to read with numerous descriptive diagrams. I say this for second-year level courses - the text is too superficial for higher levels. There is a good mix of descriptive chemistry to give the student a feel for the chemistry behind the analyses. Finally, there are adequate exercises at the end of the chapters, some of which are cumulative with previous sections. There is also a very handy tutorial on the use of Microsoft's Excel for use in a course like this, including some specific exercises in using the spreadsheet. I find it very helpful, and not at all exclusive for those using Excel since Quatro-Pro (and Lotus?) is very similar and contains help files that translate from Excel parlance.

My biggest issue is lack of a section on mass spectroscopy. Skoog's own "Instrumental Analysis" text has a fine section on mass spec, but this text contains virtually no mention of the technique, in spite of the fact that it is an increasingly important technique for both quantitative and qualitative trace analysis. However, that's the only real negative point - this text is very good and useful for 2nd year level analytical courses. (P.S. students find it straightforward and clear as well.)

5-0 out of 5 stars OHP
I want to buy OHP film of this book. But I could not find the way. Please let me know to order OHP for this book. If OHP for Instrumental analysis is avaliable, I want to order that too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Alternative to Skoog and West's Fundamentals of...
This text is a worthy contender to the classic "Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry' by Skoog and West. I feel it is easier to read, and the examples given in the inserts should provide students with a "real world" need for the topics covered. The coverage is very similar to Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry. The example problems and homework problems are illustrative and challanging. The experiments presented in the final chapters are well documented. My only observations for improvement would be the use of more detailed analysis of some of the insert examples. For example, a battery technology that is discussed in a step by step fashion in terms of equilibria, balancing redox equations, and problem solving. Also, a modernization of laboratory experiments to include topics in biochemistry, food and environmental science would be helpful in any future editon. ... Read more

Book Description

Polymer Solutions: An Introduction to Physical Properties offers a fresh, inclusive approach to teaching the fundamentals of physical polymer science. Students, instructors, and professionals in polymer chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, engineering, materials, and textiles will find Iwao Teraoka’s text at once accessible and highly detailed in its treatment of the properties of polymers in the solution phase.

Teraoka’s purpose in writing Polymer Solutions is twofold: to familiarize the advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate student with basic concepts, theories, models, and experimental techniques for polymer solutions; and to provide a reference for researchers working in the area of polymer solutions as well as those in charge of chromatographic characterization of polymers. The author’s incorporation of recent advances in the instrumentation of size-exclusion chromatography, the method by which polymers are analyzed, renders the text particularly topical.
Subjects discussed include:

  • Real, ideal, Gaussian, semirigid, and branched polymer chains
  • Polymer solutions and thermodynamics
  • Static light scattering of a polymer solution
  • Dynamic light scattering and diffusion of polymers
  • Dynamics of dilute and semidilute polymer solutions

Study questions at the end of each chapter not only provide students with the opportunity to test their understanding, but also introduce topics relevant to polymer solutions not included in the main text. With over 250 geometrical model diagrams, Polymer Solutions is a necessary reference for students and for scientists pursuing a broader understanding of polymers. ... Read more

Book Description

Multivariate Calibration Harald Martens, Chemist, Norwegian Food Research Institute, Aas, Norway and Norwegian Computing Center, Oslo, Norway Tormod Næs, Statistician, Norwegian Food Research Institute, Aas, Norway The aim of this inter-disciplinary book is to present an up-to-date view of multivariate calibration of analytical instruments, for use in research, development and routine laboratory and process operation. The book is intended to show practitioners in chemistry and technology how to extract the quantitative and understandable information embedded in non-selective, overwhelming and apparently useless measurements by multivariate data analysis. Multivariate calibration is the process of learning how to combine data from several channels, in order to overcome selectivity problems, gain new insight and allow automatic outlier detection. Multivariate calibration is the basis for the present success of high-speed Near-Infrared (NIR) diffuse spectroscopy of intact samples. But the technique is very general: it has shown similar advantages in, for instance, UV, Vis, and IR spectrophotometry, (transmittance, reflectance and fluorescence), for x-ray diffraction, NMR, MS, thermal analysis, chromatography (GC, HPLC) and for electrophoresis and image analysis (tomography, microscopy), as well as other techniques. The book is written at two levels: the main level is structured as a tutorial on the practical use of multivariate calibration techniques. It is intended for university courses and self-study for chemists and technologists, giving one complete and versatile approach, based mainly on data compression methodology in self-modelling PLS regression, with considerations of experimental design, data pre-processing and model validation. A second, more methodological, level is intended for statisticians and specialists in chemometrics. It compares several alternative calibration methods, validation approaches and ways to optimize the models. The book also outlines some cognitive changes needed in analytical chemistry, and suggests ways to overcome some communication problems between statistics and chemistry and technology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book- ridiculous price
I used the previous edition of this book to teach myself the basics of mulitvariate calibration for use in my research on microfluidic biosensor systems. It is well written with a good development of concepts. It also does a good job of defining the multiplicity of redundant terms in this jargon-soaked field. It requires knowledge of basic linear algebra and assumes an analytical chemistry background. Overall I would recommend it for its content. The price of this edition, however, is criminal. The editing in the '89 edition was atrocious and the graphics very basic. I suppose this new edition could have cleaned that all up... but please! It's only 400-odd pages and it's a paperback! I'm shopping on e-bay for this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Figure out what you're looking at.
I just completed a three day course with Marty with his text as the outline. Absolutely helpful! Training in controlled substance analysis often only includes pattern recognition for comparison of unknown samples to standards. The information in this book will get you well on your way to recognizing what is going on in the spectra you already know and will help provide information when no standard matches. Thanks Marty, this book is a great reference assistant! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm very disappointed with the new version.
I'm a graduate student retaking Instrumental Analysis. Fortunately for me, I have the fouth addition to reference. As a student, I'm required to do homework from various chapters. In doing this, I've found numerous reference errors within the problem sets. This makes problem solving difficult (to say the least). It seems as though the proof readers only read the material and did not try to solve any of the problems. The written text is better than the older edition; however, I've still found equational errors. In the end, I'm forced to use both editions. Finally, I will give credit to the amount of useful information within the text. I find that portion of the book highly informative and relatively detailed.

2-0 out of 5 stars There have to be better books
First of all, this book is riddled with errors. There are typos up the wazoo! Second, a lot of the optical path diagrams of the instruments are very confusing. You cannot make heads or tales from the illustrations. Skoog has yet to enter the 21st century because everything is in black and white. The picture style is very bland and terribly out of date. Skoog also tries desperately to be pedantic. For example, he describes a computer monitor as a cathode ray tube output device. If you like Atkins, you will love Skoog, or vice versa. It's great as a reference but otherwise worthless. Trust me when I say this book is too wordy, too confusing, and way too 'Cold War' era boring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable resource.....
I am an undergrad senior majoring in math and chemistry. I noticed a majority of the reviews seemed to be somewhat negative, so I thought I would weigh in. I have found this text to be a real asset. I have used it for a one credit lab in instrumental analysis and really love the attention given to the mathematical representations of the concepts. I don't really plan on working in a lab setting, and I find the text gives a great overview of a lot of instrumentation. Very easy to read and follow. Well worth the money to have it on the bookshelf.

2-0 out of 5 stars very basic introduction to analytical chem
This book is pretty much standard for undergrad analytical chemistry but it is not a great text. It provides a very basic introduction to analytical methods in a poorly organised fashion. The information is presented in such a way that it calls for you to memorize rather than understand. The mathematics presented confuse the reader more than they help. I recommend you buy this used. If you plan on pursuing analytical chemistry, this book will quickly be shoved aside to make way for much better books, each specific to a particular instrumental method.
