Book Description

In the 1980s, capillary electrophoresis (CE) joined high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) as the most powerful separation technique available to analytical chemists and biochemists. Published research using CE grew from 48 papers in the year of commercial introduction (1988) to 1200 in 1997. While only a dozen major pharmaceutical and biotech companies have reduced CE to routine practice, the applications market is showing real or potential growth in key areas, particularly in the DNA marketplace for genomic mapping and forensic identification. For drug development involving small molecules (including chiral separations), one CE instrument can replace 10 liquid chromatographs in terms of speed of analysis. CE also uses aqueous rather than organic solvents and is thus environmentally friendlier than HPLC. The second edition of Practical Capillary Electrophoresis has been extensively reorganized and rewritten to reflect modern usage in the field, with an emphasis on commercially available apparatus and reagents. This authoritative and very comprehensible treatment builds on the author's extensive experience as an instructor of short courses for the American Chemical Society and for industry.

Book Description

Performing effective chemical separations-a step-by-step guide to the most commonly used techniques.
How do experienced analysts go about making a chemical separation work? Through precise, detailed coverage of the principles, equipment, and techniques involved, this combination laboratory manual and reference source gives readers a working knowledge of an impressive array of separation methods. In forty-two chapters, it explores all major categories of separation, including those involving phase changes, extraction, chromatography, ion-exchange resins, electric fields, flotation, membranes, and miscellaneous techniques.
With an emphasis on everyday practice rather than theory, Chemical Separations explains the principles and parameters of these methods with a minimum of mathematics, while providing 59 specific experiments to demonstrate proper procedures. Drawn from well-known commercial and academic laboratories and approved by national standard-setting organizations, these experiments feature step-by-step protocols for each separation scheme, precise instructions on setting up the apparatus, and helpful checklists for essential chemicals and supplies. With Chemical Separations as their guide, laboratory analysts and newcomers to chemical analysis will learn how to obtain quality analysis using commercial products, natural samples, and proven real-world laboratory techniques.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you're psyched to learn chemistry...
I own many, many Schaum's Outlines, and am satisfied with all of them. However, before you buy this outline of Analytical Chemistry or any of the other Schaum's Outlines, you need to ask yourself what your needs are. If you are looking for a brief review of a subject, you should look elsewhere. If you are taking a course in Analytical Chemistry and need a little help with some areas of it, you should look elsewhere--preferably, ask someone with a thorough grasp of the subject to explain those areas to you.

The Schaum's Outlines are best used as a self-study tool. Let's face it, reviewing an entire subject and solving all the problems to gain a solid grasp on the material is difficult and time-consuming, and I suspect few students already enrolled in a course will have the extra time to rehash what they've already been told by reading through a Schaum's Outline, and few will want to go through so many problems--at least in my courses, the problems we are provided are too much to begin with.

For review purposes, Schaum's may help some students. However, since you need to know what your course will test you on specifically, you would need to go through the outline along with your notes. Therefore, spending more time reviewing your course notes might be a better use of your time.

Schaum's Outlines are essentially cheaply made textbooks, and, as with other texts, the writing varies widely from one book in the series to another. If a cheap self-study of a course is what you seek, or you'd like to preview a course you plan to take, by all means go with Schaum's. If you are a student looking for help with a subject, seek it elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars Analytical Chemistry made easy
The book explains all the concepts regarding analytical chemistry in a very lucid manner, which makes it a very easy to understand book. The way in which the book deals with the problems in analytical chemistry is noteworthy. If only the coverage would have been deeper my rating would have been 5 star.Still a must read book for who want to get started and get a feel of problems related to the subject of analytical chemistry. ... Although dynamical mechanical analysis or spectroscopy has left the domain of the rheologist and has become a prevalent tool in the analytical laboratory, it is still common to hear, "What is DMA, and what will it tell me?" or "I think I could use a DMA, but I cannot justify its cost." Previously, the novice in the field had to sort through texts on thermal analysis, rheology, and materials science just to find basic information - until now. This book provides the chemist, chemical engineer, or materials scientist with a starting point to understand the applications of dynamic mechanical analysis, its workings, and its advantages and limitations.Discussions include:orheological conceptsostress-strainodata handlingoexperimental techniques and considerationsotest methods, such as frequency sweeps and time-temperature curvesodata analysis ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What I needed, when I needed it
I needed to get up to speed on DMA fast and I got what I needed. It didn't provide all the info I required for my specific application (submicron thin films) but it did provide a sound foundation for further investigation. This is truly what it claims to be, a practical introduction, many thanks to the author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! The Book That Spells Out The Answers To Questions.
I spent many hours researching for a Thermal Mechanical textbook that was packed full of "Get Down To The Point Answers". Let's face it, there are not many current Thermal Analysis textbooks for sale. The books I've seen are too scrambled with no understanding at the end. This book was VERY informative, and it answered my questions. Special Thanks to the author. Please write many more books with the same intentions in mind: "We would like to understand and learn from what we read"! Thank You!

2-0 out of 5 stars I'm hoping for an expanded second edition....
I ordered this book based on the other review here onamazon.com and was looking for a bit more. A fair bit of the contentis already covered by free application notes on the web and sales literature that the makers of DMA instrumentation pass out for free. If your looking for a solid treatment of the polymer physics of DMA testing, that's not this book; maybe it hasn't been written yet. If you just want to relate DMA testing to real world environments and effects, then there aren't enough good examples in the book or a method to make this book worth the price.

This would make an acceptable guide for a technician who was just introduced to a DMA - I was looking for more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text. Very much needed book in the field.
This is a must own book for graduate students in polymer science and is also an excellent introduction to this important materials characterization technique for professionals new to this field. To my knowledge there is not presently another book which discusses this material without a significant excursion into complex variable maths. ... Read more

Book Description

Ideal for courses in aerosol science or particle technology, Smoke, Dust, and Haze: Fundamentals of Aerosol Dynamics, 2e is the only modern text that focuses on aerosol dynamics--the study of the factors that determine changes in the distribution of aerosol properties with respect to particle size. It covers fundamental concepts, experimental methods, and a wide variety of applications. Using the aerosol dynamics approach, the author integrates a broad range of topics including stochastic processes, aerosol transport theory, coagulation, formation of agglomerates, classical nucleation theory, and the synthesis of ultrafine solid particles. The book makes extensive use of scaling concepts and dimensional analysis and emphasizes physical and physicochemical interpretations. Basic concepts are illustrated by applications to many fields including air pollution control, the atmospheric sciences, microcontamination in the semiconductor industry, and the industrial manufacture of powders, pigments, additives, and nanoparticles.

Revised and expanded, this second edition features new chapters on the kinetics of agglomeration of non-coalescing particles and the fundamentals of aerosol reactor design. It covers the effects of turbulence on coagulation and gas-to-particle conversion and also discusses the formation of primary particles by the collision-coalescence mechanism. The chapter on the atmospheric aerosol has been completely rewritten within the aerosol dynamics framework. Its basic approach and topicality make Smoke, Dust, and Haze: Fundamentals of Aerosol Dynamics, 2e an essential guide for both students and researchers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good practical book:
This book is an excellent practical approach to common problems of solving structures. I think it's really good.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's a good supplement
I had to buy this book for a Spectroscopy class, and I came to Amazon looking to see if there is an answer book too (which i don't think exists). Don't let the book discription fool you... The questions are "graded" meaning they progressively get more difficult. The questions are NOT answered, which would have been very helpful. If you are looking for a VERY BASIC explination to spectral chemistry, and a bunch of problems, get this book. If you want to really know what spectral chem is all about try "Spectrometric Identification of Organic Compounds". ... Read more
