Book Description

The main aim of this unique book is to introduce the student to spectroscopy in a clear manner which avoids, as far as possible, the mathematical aspects of the subject. It is thus intended for first or second year undergraduates, particularly those with minimal mathematics qualifications.

After explaining the theory behind spectroscopy, the book then goes on to look at the different techniques, such as rotational, vibrational and electronic spectroscopy. It encompasses both high resolution (structural) and low resolution (analytical) spectroscopy, demonstrating their close interrelationship. The many worked problems make this book particularly appealing for independent study. ... Read more

Book Description

Thousands of derivatization procedures for HPLC and CE-an essential tool for today's analytical chemist.

This valuable reference offers fast and convenient access to derivatization reactions for both HPLC and capillary electrophoresis (CE). Covering a wide variety of compounds from pharmaceutical drugs and biological products to industrial contaminants, it is organized first by functional group and then by individual reagents. Techniques for each functional group are described in sufficient detail that the researcher can replicate procedures without reference to the original publications-saving hours of tedious library research. And because detailed procedures for the same reagent are listed together, it is easy to combine features of different methods and tailor them to fit specific individual requirements.

Also available on CD-ROM, Handbook of Derivatization Reactions for HPLC contains fully abstracted and evaluated procedures from more than 1,900 papers, with descriptions of hundreds of reagents. A further 3,000 papers are referenced in bibliographies that are clearly annotated to help analysts identify those sources likely to be most useful.

This important new resource will be welcomed by chemists working in pharmaceutical, biomedical, and environmental analysis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for those involved in chromatography
Those who have been involved in chromatography for some timewill likely remember the book by Daniel Knapp, Handbook of AnalyticalDerivitization .This book is an excellent resource for exploring derivitazation reactions by GC, GC-MS and HPLC.The focus on this current volume is on HPLC and CE so those interested in GC and GC-MS should continue to refer to Knapp's book on this subject. This book by Lunn and Hellwig is an excellent addition to the literature. It is almost 1800 pages long with several appendixes including one on reagent types, formula names including a citation in the book where the particular reagent or chemical was used. There is also an appendix "Bibliography of Related References " that includes information on compound types not included in the main text. All of the appendixes are welcome additions to the book. The book is organized according to the functional group that is derivatized starting with acyl halide and ending with thiosulfate. Each entry includes the chemical structure involved in the reaction, the sample matrix, analyte, sample preparation, HPLC variables, chromatogram, key word (s) and reference(s). Additionally, should the sample be able to be analyzed by CE, that information is also provided. This books contains a wealth of information and reflects the heroic amount of work that has gone into it's preparation. In the introductory material, the authors provide the sources they used for searching the literature and indicate that the period searched was from 1978- present.A list of abbreviations and suppliers of reagents is also provided. In addition to the printed book, a searchable CD is also included. The CD provides similar information to that found in the book with search strategies straightforward and easy to execute. The entire package is excellent and highly recommended for it's breadth of coverage on this topic. This package should be available to all who are involved in this type of work. ... Read more

Book Description

A classic among NMR textbooks, this thoroughly revised and enlarged third edition includes
- new treatment of the fundamentals, focusing on pulsed FT methods
- description of recently developed techniques, such as pulsed field gradient methods
- coverage of software for spectra simulation and spin-echo experiments.

Written by an NMR expert with long-standing teaching experience, this text provides students and professionals with a lucidly written introduction to NMR spectroscopy.

From reviews of previous editions:

'This is an excellent book ... we have been using the first edition of the book in our graduate course in NMR for three years and have been very pleased with it. My opinion is that someone who began knowing nothing about NMR could become quite proficient at structure determination by simply mastering the contents of this book. I highly recommend it.'
Journal of the American Chemical Society.

'Almost every course in chemistry and biochemistry nowadays has some NMR component, and the student's interest depends on how the material is delivered. This book is a pleasure to read and if it does not arouse the student's interest, then it is difficult to see what could. It is clearly written and illustrated, with a near perfect balance of mathematics and text.'

5-0 out of 5 stars Gabrielsson's & Weiner's Pharmacokinetics & Pharmacodynamics
This excellent review of PK and PD analysis might be envisioned as a merging of Rowland and Tozer's (clinical) and Gibaldi's resepective textbooks of pharmacokinetics. Although clearly written in support of the WinNonlin (Pharsight) analysis software (the second half of the book includes example models), the text is sufficient as a stand-alone by providing up to date, yet easily understandable and well illustrated discussion of pharmacokinetics. Both modeling and noncompartmental analysis are discussed, as is application of pharmacodynamic analysis. Clinical applicability is included. The book is useful for beginners as well as individuals who have been in the PK/PD business for a while. For myself and my graduate students, the book was particularly helpful in explaining the basis for "policies" followed by many published pharmacokinetic papers. ... Read more

Book Description

The most comprehensive guide to infrared and Raman spectra of inorganic and coordination compounds-now fully revised and updated

This book has served as the definitive guide to infrared and Raman spectroscopy of inorganic and coordination compounds from the time of its first publication in 1963. The Fifth Edition consists of two self-contained volumes: Part A describes basic theories of normal vibrations and their applications to relatively simple inorganic compounds, while Part B extends them to larger and more complex systems-coordination compounds, organometallic compounds, and bioinorganic compounds.

Part B shows how one can deduce structural and bonding information from vibrational spectra. For this purpose, the compounds have been classified into each structural type, their vibrational frequencies and band assignments listed, and typical infrared/Raman spectra illustrated. Special emphasis has been placed on metal-ligand vibrations that appear in the low-frequency region. This new edition
* Incorporates new topics, including complexes of carbon dioxide and dihydrogen and metal complex-DNA interactions
* Offers many references to the latest research in the field
* Reviews all important new results obtained on the subject
* Provides many infrared and Raman spectral charts of typical compounds
* Features 156 illustrations

This is the best reference book for researchers and graduate students in this field today.

Book Description

This is the first book-length, integrated treatment of impedance spectroscopy with an emphasis on solid state electrochemical systems. Impedance spectroscopy is a method for characterizing the electrical behavior of systems in which the overall system behavior is determined by a number of coupled processes, each proceeding at a different rate. The scope of this volume is comprehensive: provides coverage of fundamental theory, illustrates applications of the technique, and discusses practical considerations in regard to data acquisition and analysis. Those with little prior experience in impedance measurements will find this an excellent introduction. Senior investigators will find that the book provides a useful summary of fundamentals as well as a survey of recent developments in the field. ... Read more

A classic work in the field of electrical impedancecharacterization. MacDonald provides a series of methodologies andmodels to characterize chemical processes and materials in general. The main contribution of this book is the introduction of the constant phase elements that formally help to match the experimental measurements with basic electrical circuits.

The book also expands on the physical meaning of the different electrical circuits that the author proposes as models to characterize materials. This book is a "must" for any researcher in the field of electrical impedance. ... Read more

Book Description

In recent years, interest in proteins has surged. This resurgence has been driven by the expansion of the post-genomic era when structural genomics and proteomics require new techniques in protein chemistry and new applications of older techniques. Protein chemistry methods are used by nearly every discipline of biomedical research. Many techniques have been used in less traditional ways with exciting results. Modern Protein Chemistry: Practical Aspects describes the practical side of advanced techniques in protein chemistry. The book gives researchers an excellent "cost-benefit" analysis of these techniques. The contributors have been selected for their prominence in their specific fields and because they run laboratories that actively collaborate with other scientists. Researchers and practitioners, both beginners and experienced, who are looking for new ideas and who are interested in applying these more advanced methods will be assisted in their work by these commentaries. This guide provides hands-on information to complement theoretical understanding. The theory behind these methods can be found in existing books and in the original literature. However, no other guide will help you make a practical evaluation of these methods and their value to your work. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars As the title says, your basic NMR spectroscopy catelog.
NMR spectroscopy is a powerful tool for chemists interested in structure, dynamics and function of molecular systems. The success of this technique has lead to a proliferation of experiments yielding a wealth of data about chemical structure ranging from small molecules to not-so-small proteins and beyond. The authors have compiled a core of NMR experiments that will serve a student new to the field or an old-hand who has forgotten the phase-cycle of a particular pulse sequence. The book is sectioned into 14 chapters with the 1st two being introductory ( What is a NMR spectrometer and why is it sitting away fromeverything else? or If I have radiation dampening do I need to get a mop?).The next 10 chapters take the reader from routine spectroscopy experiments to a variety of 1- and 2- dimensional liquid NMR experiments with and without magnetic field gradients. The last two chapters introduce the reader to some basic 3-dimensional liquid sequences and solids NMR spectroscopy. These two subjects could have been extended but I imagine we will see that in the next volume, 150 to 300 NMR experiments. There are 160 (according to my count) different experiments and measurements discussed and each is organized to familarize the experimenter with the purpose of the experiment, the procedure to perform it, and some expected results for the experiment. The authors have wisely included a readers observation area for each section. This allows the utility of the book to grow as the reader gains experience with each NMR method. This book should be in any NMR laboratory and would be an added help to any course using NMR spectroscopy.I know any undergraduate organic chemistry course should get an attendance boost from experiment 8.15 where the students would determine the alcohol content in polish vodka. (As a student I would have suggested a more hands on approach.)The final upshot is this is an great compendium and should be a staple in any NMR laboratory period.

5-0 out of 5 stars a handbook for spectroscopists
100 and more basic NMR experiments is an essential book for anyone working in an NMR lab, who occasionally has to do more than a repetitive basic 1D protocol.Braun et. al. cover everything from a brief introduction to aspectrometer, to calibrations and standard tests, right through homo andheteronuclear 1,2, and 3 dimentional nmr.

Each experiment is set out witha schematic of the pulse program, phase cycling, and processing parameters,as well as literature citations and practical examples. It isparticularily useful for users of Bruker spectrometers, as a lot of thenomenclature is identical to those of the Bruker instruments.

People whohave never done a heteronuclear 2D experiment could get an acceptablespectrum with very little other lterature. ... Read more
