Anatomy & Physiology At Its Finest
I am currently using Marieb's 6th Edition text in my introductory Anatomy & Physiology course, and I couldn't have found a better aid had I tried. From cover to cover, this book is packed with a plethora of information. Though it may seem as if the book contains too much to take in upon first glance, the key is to read an average of about 7 pages a night and to take notes as you go along since each page is filled to the brim with detail and vocabulary. To put it simply, each chapter is about 30 - 45 pages long on average. Each page contains either a sea of vocabulary, diagrams of the human body, or oftentimes both. Aside from all of this, the fact that it is so in-depth (and sometimes complex with its scientific jargon) is what makes this book suitable for any anatomy class. The CD ROMs (if available w/ purchase) are also a great aid as well since they provide explinations focused on each individual topic in the chapter. There are also provided links to internet sites and quizzes to help sharpen your memory of difficult concepts. All in all, this book is nothing short of incredible, and will surely be helpful to anyone whether it be a college student or a student of a graduate school using it as a refresher. Very strongly recommended.

Why so large?
I am a University of Minnesoota student and we use this text for our introductory Human Anatomy course. (Unfortunately they came out with a new edition and I couldn't sell it back to the bookstore.) Strictly in terms of the content this book was average because I often needed more information on certain aspects of the human anatomy. My real frustration was due to the fact that I feel the publisher should have supplied a carrying case specifically designed to carry such a large, awkward book. I realize that the size contributed to larger pictures but I feel it was a bit overboard! Finally, as I mentioned before, a new edition came out very recently. The new book resembles the previous edition too much. It's unfortunate we live in such a capitalistic society as to allow such a situation to take place.. ... Read more

The Most Practical Anatomy Book
I agreed with the comments of a previous reviewer that most anatomy books tend to be overwhelming tomes that provide little understanding to those who want to apply it to their movement discipline. As a professional martial artist, I have found that this book is by far the most practical book on anatomy I have ever read. Blandine Germain clearly explains "the how" of body movement and the relevant tissue, tendons and range of motion. It is an excellent roadmap for troubleshooting inefficient movement whether you are a bodyworker, athlete, dancer, or martial artist.

Easy to understand and very helpful
As a student of yoga and dance, I've been looking for an anatomy book to help me understand what's involved in movement. Unfortunately, most of the books I found were encyclopedic reference tomes that overwhelmed me with information. So I was delighted to run across this one: because its specific focus is movement, the drawings and descriptions cover only the relevant anatomical details. It's easy to understand and clear without being simplistic. The organization of the book makes it easy to find the information you want. And it doesn't just show joints and muscles; other relevant body parts are illustrated so the reader comprehends how everything works together (I never understood what the diaphragm really looks like until I saw this book!). This is a book that belongs in everyone's library -- it's not just for dancers or bodyworkers.

Excellent review of ... ligaments!
In all of my materials as a massage therapist, none of them covered ligaments functions, names and locations as well as this one! Beautiful illustrations and it's a book that makes you get up and move every few minutes as you're reading!

Excellent introduction to anatomy and kinesiology
As other reviewers have said, this is an excellent introduction to anatomy and kinesiology. The book strikes the perfect balance between clinical detail and practical knowledge for body-workers, athletes and dancers. We have copies of several pages up on the wall at my Pilates studio which get referred to often.

All the major skeletal muscle groups of the limbs and torso are covered. It is not a disection manual. It is organized for students of movement. Of particular value is the section on the work of the psoas and the "psoas paradox" that is somewhat controversial.

To get more in depth, one text I can recommend for the dancer/Pilates instructor is "Dance Kinesiology" by Sally Sevey Fitt.

Great for students of massage and bodywork
This is a must book for students of massage of bodywork. It is written in a clear and descriptive way that takes the boredom out of anatomy. This gives knowledge on the kinesiology of the body in a simple manner. I also would advise to buy the following which is also sold on amazon.com:

Good Book
This is a good book for college anatomy and physiology. It is very thorough and descriptive. Goes in depth into nervous, muscular, skeletal and endocrine systems to name a few. I also recommend Key Facts of Anatomy and Physiology isbn;0971999694. This last book shows you what's important to study for. Both books highly recommended.

The Mercedes of Undergraduate A&P Books
I used this book as a student, and refer to it frequently as a reference. This 1000 + page text explains the structure and function of the complicated, detailed human body in a logical, easy to understand manner. Everything about this book is user friendly including the presentation order, the writing, and the graphics. In each chapter, Marieb presents the big picture before zeroing in on the details. For the body's systems, (digestive, endocrine, respiratory, etc.) Marieb overviews the system, and then explains the gross and fine anatomy and associated physiology.

Here are a few of the many features I find impressive: * Graphics: Very impressive photographs and illustrations. The electron micrographs are spectacular. * Tables and charts - These greatly simplify the learning of complex concepts. For example, in the immune system chapter, there's a good table explaining the first and second lines of defense. * Medical applications - Common diseases are overviewed in the appropriate chapter, for example epilepsy is discussed in the neural integration chapter. There are occasional basic pharmacology and sports applications, such as diuretics and blood doping, respectively. * Making connections feature - Marieb shows how the system being studied relates to the other systems in the body.

This is an absolutely state of the art A&P book, and each edition is better than the last. It's expensive, but you get a lot for your money. It may be too detailed for some, who would be better served by her "Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology" text. If you're an A&P student, I recommended you use her workbook as well. I've found that working through the exercises really helps this information stick.

Great A&P book, written in friendly style
Elain Marieb presents a really wonderful anatomy and physiology text. It provides a colorful feast of pictures and charts for the visual learner without skimping on the important details in the text. Marieb's writing style is friendly, informal and descriptive. Her writing can get quite theoretical at times but she always comes back to earth with a common example.

This book is best suited for health sciences students (medicine, nursing, physical therapy, pharmacy etc.) as the book is littered with clinical applications. However students taking A&P at high school and undergrad level are well catered for. The book works systematically, from basic biochemistry to the organ systems and system interactions. Genetics and inheritance is also covered briefly.

What else is on offer? A large glossary (invaluable to an A&P text!)and a prefix/suffix table. There are chapter summaries and test quizzes. Some may enjoy the CD ROM computer interaction aspects, there's also access to Elain's internet site for A&P students.

Some of the material gets quite tough as the book progresses, but with re-reading and reference to other texts, students should quickly get a handle on the material. I previously owned a copy of the condensed "Essentials of human A&P" and traded it in for the full edition. I don't recommend students get the condensed version unless they are confining their A&P study to high school or 100 level college study.

In conclusion, this is good first textbook and greatly aids in one's course of study. Marieb takes the unimaginable complexity of the human body and presents it in a fun, relatively easy-to-read, lively text.

Great for A and P students, must buy
I used this book for both my Anatomy and Physiology class in undergrad. I found this book to be pretty easy to understand. Of course, at first it is overwhelming to know how much you have to remember for the test. At least, writing style of this book made A and P easier to learn. The material is presented in organized fashion. However, if you really want to know the type of questions asked on college Anatomy and Physiology Exams get the following which is on amazon: Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations Volume 1(ISBN: 0971999619) and Volume 2 (ISBN: 0971999627). These two helped me to get A's on my exams. The textbook and the two study guides are well worth the money since they helped me to pass with high grades the first time. I was recommened the study guides from my cousin who used them for his A and P class and found them to be great for test preparation. I give each book 5 stars.

Yes, but...
This book is an outstanding achievement for a single author, and I have learned a great deal from it. I like the graphics, the layout, and the wealth of information. However, I do find many paragraphs and passages in this book difficult to follow, usually because crucial details are missing. See, for example the explanations of ossification (pages 181-183) and the countercurrent mechanism in the kidneys (pages 1022-1026). It took me less time to digest a whole book on the immune system than the corresponding chapter in this book (chapter 22).

There is a web site associated with the book, which gives the student an opportunity to ask questions. I submitted a couple of simple questions several weeks ago, but have yet to receive a reply.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any A & P book at this level that would be better.

Excellent textbook and a must buy
The author of this book is an excellent writer. She makes learning anatomy and physiology easier. This book is divided into so many topics like skeletal system, nervous system, circulatory system. This book helped me as a undergraduate A and P student. It helped me form the foundation of my knowledge. However, if you want a really good study guide that focuses on key topics seen on college A and P exams, I highly recommend the following: Key Facts for Anatomy and Physiology by Patrick Leonardi

A student's opinion
This textbook is actually one that is recommended for the Nutrition course at my university. I found it very useful and informative for all aspects of the course. Information was displayed in a clear and colourful manner, which made taking it all a lot easier. The study questions at the end of each section came in very handy when revising for exams. In addition the lists of resources relating to each topic were helpful, enabling you to look at other sources for further reading. I found the 'highlights' in particular useful as they covered particular points (such as eating disorders or osteoporosis) in depth and related it to the different aspects of nutrition.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone with a more than cursory interest in nutritional science as it provides a great of information on the subject.

Outstanding Coverage of The Topic
I purchased this book with the intention on self education rather than for a course. I have found this book to be nothing short of outstanding. There is a lot of good information and it is easy for a beginner to pick it up and understand the content. The layout is very user friendly and the pictures actually make it rather enjoyable to learn.

There are many different tools that the book utilizes. There are cadaver photos, photomicrographs, histology-based art, orientation diagrams, concept statements, and other overview portions to make learning different and unique. I really enjoyed how there is lifetime development, aging, and exercise notes beside many areas to help the reader get a more complete understanding of the subject. The CD can act as a study guide. It contains about 30 questions for each chapter to make self review that much easier.

I have been looking for an anatomy and physiology text that is basic, because my foundation is limited, but also complete. I believe I have found that with this book. I actually enjoy where the anatomy is blended with the physiology. I don't know if this would be appropriate for a course, because I've never taken one and don't know the standardm but for self learning this is of the best that I have seen.

I'd highly recommend this text to those who are new to this field of study because of its easiness to use and completeness of information. I've seen some others that do have more information but are more difficult for a novice to use.

good for anatomy, but go elsewhere for physiology
As a medical student, a good anatomy and physiology text book is key to my education. At the start of 1st year, when I knew little about the subject, this book was great as it explained everything well with nice diagrams.

However, there are two main disadvantages of this book:
1. Anatomy, physiology, histology, cell biology, biochemistry, pathology are all found mixed together in this book. While some people like this, i think it just makes it more difficult to learn as you are never sure where one topic ends and the other begins.

2. Although good at the start of first year, I quickly found that this book didnt offer nearly enough detail needed for a degree course - especially about physiology, biochemistry etc.

There is a third disadvantage, in that this book was actually taken off our reading list because apparently there are some mistakes in the physiology sections (not many, only one or two, but our university felt that it couldnt recommend it to us as a text any longer).

This is a good anatomy book, but go elsewhere for other subjects.

Great book, bad seller
As a medical student I am always looking for a fair deal on textbooks so I turned to amazon. I found Tortora's A&P text from Kinson Hung, a third party seller through amazon, for $30 less than our bookstore. What I did not know was that the book was shipped from the UK and marked not for sale in the US. The book arrived damaged and it cost me $35 to return the book to England, which is where the package said to return the book if necessary. After inquiring about reimbursement for shipping the seller was only willing to cover $5 of the $35 after several email disputes. I purchased the book from our bookstore because my A&P class began and it cost me $35 extra for a valuable lesson that I felt obligated to share. While I would purchase new books again from amazon, I will never purchase from third party sellers and will be sure to share my costly experience with each of my colleagues. It is unfortunate that some sellers such as Kinson Hung give others a bad name. In this day of impersonal internet stores; buyers beware.

Excellent Anatomy and Physio text
For a new student of anatomy and physiology, this text is incredible. It's got a wealth of material, is easy to use and understand (without being simplistic), and does an excellent job integrating the principles of physiology in with the basic anatomy. It even has some small clinical asides that are both interesting and relevant. I used this book for all of my undergrad work, and have kept it as a valuable reference for my med school anatomy. I also picked up and use a copy of Moore's "Clinically Oriented Anatomy", which is also excellent, yet much more advanced/detailed....for a quick reference I find that I always check Tortora/Grabowski first, and go to a deeper text only if what I need isn't covered in sufficient depth, which rarely happens. This is an outstanding textbook for A&P.

the attached atlas - shows all parts of the skeleton. it is handy - you can drag it with you anywhere while studying for exams. atlas has also references to book. shame it has only the skeleton and all body systems.
the book has two cd-roms attached - one in fron cover - let's you prepare sample exams in order to prepare you to passing the exams.
the other cd-rom - is the foundations - first cd in a series of some. book contains only the first - the foundations part. it has animation, pivtures and interactive explanations and also a glossary part. so you can postpon buying a dictionary for the beginning until you have some knowledge and know what dictionary will be best for you.
all in all - excelent package for an affordable price.

Wynn Kapit graduated in 1955 from the University of Miami, Florida with honors in Business Administration and Law. He then attended Art Center School in Los Angeles and worked in New York as a graphic designer and advertising art director from 1960-66. He moved to California to pursue a painting career and was given a one-man show at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco in 1968. He then attended the University of California at Berkeley and received a Masters in Painting and worked as a portraitist and teacher of figure drawing.

Lawrence M. A Must Have for Students of Anatomy, Massage, etc.
Just when you thought they couldn't improve on the original, they keep making it better. The third edition contains all the strengths of the first two editions with dynamite new additions that will help all students of anatomy. Go down to your local hobby shop and buy the biggest set of felt tip pens you can find. After the book is colored, it should be kept as a quick reference book. You color the labels to match the illustrations, so it's easy to look back and spot the name of the muscle, bone, organ, etc. Make sure to read the section on HOW TO USE THIS BOOK before you begin coloring.

As the owner of a massage therapy school, we use this book and Salvo's Massage Therapy: Principles and Practice as our two main texts. It is incredible for those who are visual learners. We highly recommend it.

A Great Anatomy Aid -- A must for med students
This book is the best reference on the human body I've found! It focuses individually on each system, with large ready-to-color pages. This book list all bones and muscles in the human body (in the drawings, too) and reveals their locations. It goes into extreme detail about everything, and shows a fetal circulation diagram, which I have had trouble finding in other books. This book lists the view names (anterior, posterior, superior, ventral, etc.) and gives a diagram. It even spends some time talking about cells and tissues, with a colorable diagram of a cell. This book is a MUST for med students, and would make a great reference book for physicians. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in human anatomy, for I sure am enjoying it. think this is a kid's book? think again
I am in college-level beginning anatomy and the instructor was quizzing the class on terminology. He gave the definition or pointed to a body part and we had to shout out the answer. I knew all of the terms while my classmates struggled.

During break, my classmates asked how I knew/remembered this stuff. My answer? "The Anatomy Coloring Book." They blithely dismissed it as kid's stuff, a _coloring_ book. Well, that may be...but *I* know the material.

Great Study Aide!
This book was a life saver when I had to take anatomy! It soo saved me! I was better able to study for tests and I actually learned different sections of things such as the brain and cardiovascular system. If you are taking anatomy, I highly recommend this! It will help tremendously!

Great Addition to Any Anatomy Text
I purchased this while taking a course in Anatomy, and did much better in the class. What would take the text a chapter to explain, this book explained in a few pages - sometimes in a few paragraphs. It was much easier to understand the organ systems when you could actually see how things worked. The coloring aspect to me at first, seemed rather silly, but it was so much fun that I quickly got past that! I would definately recommend this book to anyone taking anatomy - purchase it with your other texts if you can (I waited till mid semester to buy mine), and start off using it as a study guide - it will definately help. They make many other of these types of books also, so if you are studying biology, microbiology, physiology, and so on, it might also help to get these. ... Read more

A great map to follow through the body.
I have had this book for many years now. It is a great tool for massage therapists to have when you need help on finding the origins of a problem area of your client's. It can also be helpful to use when you are studying kinesiology and anatomy. The book was published right after I gratduated and I can't tell you how I wish it was around before this. I did have the honor of having Andrew Biel as my instructor for many of my classes. For him to be able to convert his knowledge into such a great book was a great accomplishment. Five Stars!!

Where was this book when I was in massage school??
Finally someone has bridged the gap between dry anatomy textbooks and hands-on bodywork. "Trail Guide" is the next best thing to being able to see through the skin! Clear directions and illustrations enable bodyworkers to identify and locate both bony landmarks and muscles with precision. A must-have office reference for everyone who works with muscles.

Awesome book
Trail Guide to the Body is an invaluable resource for any massage therapist or body-worker wanting to know the intricacies of the body, and the correlation of the muscles and bones. The illustrations are incredible, showing wonderful detail. Written information is concise, informative, and thoroughly presented. Muscles include such information as: the action, insertion, origin, and nerves. Palpation is also shown along with instructions on "how-to".

The authors have also recently released flash cards for the muscles and another set for the bones. I absolutely loved them and carried them around with to study.

Awesome book! Great reference and one book that I refer to time and time again!

Excellent reference
I am a massage therapist and found this book very useful as a study aid for the national certification test for massage and bodywork. This book makes locating anatomical landmarks much easier. I also used the following which is on amazon:

Perfect overview book for medicine students
This book is strongly recommended in the education for medical students in the University of Lund. That's why I read it. It's perfect as a startup book for your pre-clin medical studies. It's not deep enough in the physiology part (although anatomy and especially histology is very good) but the integrated approach is really terrific and it makes you understand in a whole new way. If you want to become a good doctor, you should absolutely buy this book, or borrow it a least in your library. The first integrated anatomy & physiology book I've read that's deep enough for medical students. Good work Seeley.

Dr. Seeley makes the complex simple
I had the pleasure of not only getting to use this text in my A&P class but I was taught by Dr. Seeley at Idaho State University. Great text with great explinations. I am still using it as a resource in Physician Assistant training.

Excellent Basics of Anatomy and Physiology
I am sure that people who have read this book will agree that this product is the means of excellent basic Anatomy and Physiology. I have found figures and data tables very clear and easily understandable. Excellent Summaries at the end of each chapter beautifies this product. Clinical facts given from time to time are as interesting and knowledgeable as "Develop Your Reasoning Skills" Problems. This book deserve a chance from every Anatomy student. I conratulate the authors and highly recommend this book.

Moore's Anatomy text is a standard; rightfully so
I am a medical student at Texas A&M USHSC COM. Moore's is an excellent text for basic anatomy. They have included excellent drawings and the content is complete. Added bonuses to the text include insightful clinical correlation and appropriate embryological try-ins. The text appears wordy and most medical students will try to use a review book in its stead. This would be a mistake. Students who read Moore will retain more anatomy all the way into clinicals and will be ahead of their peers who did not. Overall this is a very fine text: best used in conjunction with Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy and Langman's Medical Embryology. *I will mention here, in fact, that the embryo text by Moore (The Developing Human: Clinically Oriented Embryology) does not meet the same high standard and is wrought with errors.

Rave review for Moore anatomy book
I thoroughly enjoyed studying anatomy with the Moore's book. The illustrations are great--I especially found the individual drawings of the leg and arm muscles helpful, and the 3-D drawings of the pelvic region helped me to better visualize this complex area. I was able to study most of the time from Moore and only had to use the Color Atlas of Anatomy as a reference.

The text was clearly written and very detailed. At times, it was more detailed than my first year anatomy class, but I was able to skip or skim these sections. I don't think I ever found Moore to be lacking in information.

I found the boxes highlighting attachments, function, or distribution for nerves, vessels, and muscles to be very helpful. They proved to be a quick reference.

Finally, the blue boxes with clinical information made anatomy so much more interesting. I learned many relevant facts and applied, clinical anatomy.

just too clincal
In fact it's usefull, mainly for a clinical aproach of anatomy, based on surface anatomy and changes in structure originated by injuries. however when performing dissection, that just does not help, the descriptive anatomy, is just to slim, and does not really contributes to understand the three dimensional structure of the human body. However for a quick reference could be an option. Personally prefer the testut-jacob topographic anatomy

Great Pre-medical Buy!!!
I thought this book was amazing!! It was my first medical school textbook. I flipped through the pages, glassy-eyed, realizing that this was what I had been working for!

Unfortunately, 2 years later, I ahve still not had the time to do more than use it as a reference book! I am hoping to read the entire thing sometime before retirement! Don't get me wrong, it is a great book, and I highly recommend it for medical students. However, looking back, I wish I had bought it BEFORE I came to medical school. Having the time to read the entire book, and learn the material would have been an incredible asset! Premedical students often wonder what they could be doing to prepare themselves for medical school. Buying this book and reading it would be high on my recommendation list!!!

Great book, excellent reference
This book is quite thorough for anatomy and although very wordy, I think it covers a lot of anatomical information that every med student should know. I used this book as a reference for learning the facts in my anatomy classes. I also found the following to be an excellent source:
