5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great way to go to help in learning physiology
This is a wonderful aid in learning physiology. Physiology is one of the hardest subjects to learn, but this visual learning aid makes it easier. I used this book to help me with my anatomy and physiology classes in college. I also highly recommend Tortora's Principles of Anatomy and Physiology. Tortora is a very good author who can explain difficult concepts in an understandable way. For direct test preparation, these are a must--- Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations (Volume 1) and (Volume 2) by Patrick Leonardi. These study guides had similar questions that were asked on my college exams. If you want to get good grades, then definitely get these four books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to study
This is a great book and I would recommend this book to anyone taking a microbiology class either in undergrad or med school. Since most people are visual learners this books is quite valuable. I also used the following book:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
ISBN: 0971999635
This book is also available. I found this study guide to be very on target on the type of questions that were on my microbiology class in med school. Definitely get both books.

5-0 out of 5 stars It makes your life very simple... and easy
Don't be fooled by the title, this book in fact will colour up your life. The diagrams are easy to read, and the explanations in each page are wonderful. You will understand difficult concepts with very good cartoons that will be flashing before your eyes, at the test (I loved the explanation about Hb). Don't wait more and buy it. Use it after you've read your big book and the facts will be kept long time in your mind. Wonderful! Hooray for it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best way to learn Physiology
This book is incredible - authors have really latched onto a great teaching technique. The information is excellent, succinct and very complete. The drawings are incredibly detailed and FUN to color (ok I'm 52 and may be in my 2nd childhood, but this is an very effective way to learn a very complex subject.) I am a vet tech student going for a second career (and possible poverty) - classic midlife crisis - and this book is great. In addition to being very informative and intellectually stimulating, it is also relaxing to do the coloring. And, there are things I have learned that I will never forget because my mind immediately recalls me coloring the particular process. Wish there were a similar Anatomy book that concentrated more on veterinary anatomy - the parallel coloring book for Anatomy is very human-centered.

Two criticisms:

1) I think the authors are trying to save you $$$ so they say you only need 10 colored pencils - save yourself frustration and buy the Crayola box of 32 at any art store - only $8.50 or so - and save yourself some grief - there are many plates that need more than 10 colors.

2) There are a few errors in the coloring notes - not too many - but they do exist, so if something seems wrong, just use your common sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review of Physiology
I found this to be an excellent self-study review of a subject whose details were becoming vague in my mind. The attention required to color each page requires that the reader attend to each aspect of the subject so that it stays with him; it is not forgotten immediately as are so many written texts. The Anatomy Coloring Book makes a good companion to this workbook. Alone, the anatomy book is a bit too elemental but it is useful in conjunction with this excellent exposition of basic physiology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best A&P books for SLPs!
This book was required reading in my graduate program and I am thrilled that it was! I have worked in both acute care as well as school settings and have found this book to be extremely helpful from both ends of the spectrum. An absolutely fantastic desk reference, especially in the acute care setting!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good friend
I knew Mr. Zemlin personally when he lived in Brimson Minnesota. I saw the first edition when he first got it off the press and I was very impressed. Sorry to say that Mr. Zemlin has since passed away in 1998. His knowledge of a&p was far greater than any other person I have ever known.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm glad my professor chose this book for the class
This book is probably the best a&p book for the speech and hearing sciences. It is difficult to read at first, I will not life to you about that, but it is comprehensive, and you will learn a lot. What I like best is the book being divided into systems: respiratory, phonatory, articulatory, etc., because that is a good way to study, in systems, and then you can relate one system to another, and so on. ... Book Description

"The Quantum Brain is an adventure in the science of ideas. It is the first book on the brain that combines a grasp of the physics of the microcosm and the technologies of artificial intelligence, neural networks, and self-organizing systems, with a recognition of the transcendant properties that define the mind and differentiate it from matter. Although the subject is inherently difficult and novel, Jeffrey Satinover is an inspired guide through the fertile areas of convergence among the pivotal sciences of the age. From such insights will emerge both new technologies and new philosophies and theologies for the twenty-first century."
–George Gilder, Editor, Gilder Technology Report

"Many authors have written about one or two of the topics covered in The Quantum Brain. Jeffrey Satinover’s book is unique in trying to tie everything together."
–Michael E. Kellman, Professor of Theoretical Chemistry, University of Oregon

"Thoroughly researched . . . and told as a gripping tale, thanks to Dr. Satinover’s . . . gift for the narrative. A marvelous introduction to the most fascinating question the human brain can address: its own working."
–R. Shankar, Professor of Physics and Applied Physics, Yale University

"A thrilling journey through the world of brain research. The author has set new standards for popular science writing by making arcane topics . . . easy to follow. A tapestry of insights."
–Jack Tuszynski, Professor of Physics, University of Alberta

"I wish I had written this visionary book."

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
Jeffrey Satinover has written a wonderful book here. What I find so impressive is the book's scope and accessibility. Satinover covers a wide variety of complex topics and explains them in ways that the lay-reader can easily understand. Essentially, the book serves as a wonderful introduction to problems in quantum physics, neural nets, computing, cellular automata, genetic algorithms, artificial intelligence, and some of the basic philosophy of mind problems.

If these kinds of topics have always interested you but you didn't know where to begin, Satinover provides a fun to read and easy to understand introduction. Readers who are already well-versed in these areas may find Satinover's approach to be a little "light-weight", but I think they could perhaps appreciate the manner in which he explains these things.

In the end, I was left somehow feeling a little skeptical of the author's contention of the brain serving to amplify quantum phenemonon to produce free will. But Satinover is weaving a complex argument and attempting to connect a lot of dots. Each of these dots is well-explained and I'm inclined to think that the failure to connect is most likely my limitation and failure and not Satinover's.

So to summarize I'd say this is a wonderful introduction to the discoveries in a broad array of fields such as mathematics, cognition, physics, and biology from the last 100 years. It's a pleasure to read and highly acessible. The index and bibliography are both extensive, giving the reader ample opportunity to further investigate these topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweeping synthesis
It takes a psychiatrist trained in physics and well versed in modern
technology to understand the impact of quantum mechanics
and neural networks first on computation and then on the human condition.
Dr. Satinover reviews the history of perceptrons, the rise and
tribulations of symbolic artificial intelligence and
related subdisciplines of psychology and biology.
This is a sweeping book, broad in scope and
provocative in its thesis: quantum phenomena are not just a
curiosity for physicists, they underlie our very thought.
It's the kind of book that will, after
a period of gestatation, lead to new research directions
and new speculations in the philosophy of mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars Profound synthesis of quantum physics to neurobiology
One of the best books I have ever read. For those of us who have not followed the cutting edge research in quantum physics, neurobiology and artificial intelligence, this book provides an elegant and well-written overview and synthesis of these topics. Although the author may have a bias towards seeing God behind the cloak of quantum randomness, he does lay out the possibilties in a balanced way that can only leave the thoughtful reader further in awe of the miracle of sentience and wondering if free will and God do indeed express themselves through "quantum wierdness". This scientific treatise is a novel path to the BIG questions. Absolutely wonderful. Beware; you'll want to read it again once you've finished.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating book
I have found this book very interesting. It is written in a readable and attractive style. A fascinating description of artificial neural network research, weird quantum phenomena, chaos theory and unexpected connection between those 3 fields... Although the relation between quantum computing and brain physiology is far from proven, the book comes with new and inspiring ideas that go beyond Penrose's suggestions. I consider this book as a prophetic one. There is much inspiration in the book also for philosophy and theology. Reading this book was for me one of my greatest intellectual experiences of the year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
What if a butterfly flapped its wings and started a chain of events that caused a tornado in kansas? This is the main idea behind this book. Except that the butterfly is the strange completely random behavior of subatomic particles and the tornado is what you and I are thinking right now. The first half of the book makes the argument that everything is deterministic in nature. For example: if I throw a ball and know how fast its going, what direction, its spin etc., then I can determine where it will end up. If this is true, why isn't the human brain any different? The second half of the book argues that this is not true. Satinover explains a wide variety of scientific discoveries that all link together to explain how our thoughts can harness the complete randomness of quantum phenomenons. Even the lay person can pick this book up and read it. He explains step by step all of the ideas. Anyone who likes learning how new things work should pick up this book. I've learned a great deal from it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent quick read
This is an excellent source for high yield anatomy review. Its clinical scenarios, CT scans and other diagnostic images are priceless for Step 1 studying. HOWEVER, this cannot be used alone. An atlas must be used with it to completely cover anatomy. For it brevity and high yield info = 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars CLINICALLY SIGNIFICANT ANATOMICAL CONCEPTS
Anatomy is a subject that might seem endless......until you get this book. When I bought it I knew finally why was anatomy useful in the everyday clinical practice. Friendly, with LOTS of excellent pictures, key essential concepts, and extremely well organized, information just diffuses toward your brain. Also, a USMLE step 1 must have....when I was answering it, I thanked God the book had fell in my hands.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good USMLE review book
This book is not sufficient for course study, but is a very good choice for Step 1 preparation. Anatomy is a fairly low yield topic on the Step 1 exam and this is a good, concise review of clinically relevant anatomy.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable anatomy review book!
This book is perfect for USMLE review. Dr. Dudek cuts through all of the fluff (and in gross anatomy, there is a LOT of fluff!), and focuses in on commonly tested concepts. I also recommend his high-yield embryology book for board review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent quick review
Prevents you from losing sight of the big picture in anatomy. Inappropriate as a primary text, but beautiful as a review book right before an exam of the USMLE. Worth the money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I used this book for Anatomy class at Stony Brook University this is one of few books that I've read and found great for preparing for exams. I would like to also recommend Netter's Altas of Human anatomy and Netter's human anatomy cards

5-0 out of 5 stars Nurse Practitioners!
This book has been recommended by two Family Nurse Practitioners.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the Better Anatomy Texts
I still have yet to find the ultimate text for use with anatomy. The Moore volume is probably the best to use as your main text when taking either undergrad anatomy or gross. As with any anatomy text - you will always need supplemental resources - esp. if you are taking gross anatomy. The selection that I had always found useful in the past was the triple combo of Moore's text, Grant's dissector, and Netter's Atlas. With these three you have essentially everything you need for taking gross anatomy - the embryology texts that are usually used for gross anatomy vary, but often contain the same exact info - I feel that is a more individual choice.

I find the Moore text to be very concise - drawings are clear and well labled - good discussion questions at the end of chapters - and the book is very well laid out, esp. in the always intense "head and neck". I highly recommend this volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars This atlas will always be a classic, must buy
I used this atlas in chiropractic school. It's the best atlas, and it's so detailed that I prefer looking at this atlas than any other one. His pictures are as clear as can be. Obviously, Dr. Netter is very talented. I used this book also for my gross anatomy classes along with the following book also sold on amazon.com:
Spinal Anatomy Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
(ISBN: 0971999600)
I got an A in my gross anatomy classes and also an A in my Spinal Anatomy class using both these books. My advice is definitely get both books. I also have friends in medical school who also used these two books and got excellent grades in their gross anatomy classes

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding even for non-medical readers
What a wonderful book. I am not a health-care professional -- just a layman -- but this book is positively captivating. I was able to use Dr. Netter's crystal-clear illustrations to understand a shoulder injury, and while there is virtually no descriptive text other than the labelling of the body parts (it's an atlas, not an anatomy book), there is much here to learn from.

Every medical professional I've spoken with knows Dr. Frank Netter's work, and it's great that he now has a single volume available to the layman.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for students!
A good anatomy atlas is invaluable in clinical practice as well!

I regularly pull out my (previous edition) atlas to (1) teach patients the anatomy involved in various problems ("this is why we need to do XYZ"), AND (2) to localize an injury (dermatome pictures, foot and hand ligaments and muscles)...

I wish this had been available when I was in medical school - it would have made anatomy a lot more accessible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite Good
Love the diagram especially it's all colour coded (but a little bit overwhelming when just start looking at it)
but the sad thing it's a "pure" atlas
the prob with it is that it doesn't hav any text or explanations at all

5-0 out of 5 stars study Osteology from another book
I'm not going to bother telling you how great this book is. To find praises just read the rest of the reviews on this book. I want to mention the problem that I found, which shouldn't stop you from purchasing this book. The only problem I found is that it doesn't concentrate enough on Osteology, particularly on cranium, bones of the hand and bones of the foot.

Pages two to 14 are devoted to the skeleton of the head. The following illustrations are available: anterior, lateral and posterior views of the whole skull; lateral and superior views of a newborn; superior view of horizontal section and lateral view of midsagittal section; calvaria, mandible and temporomandibular joint; radiographs of anteroposterior view, lateral view, and atlantoaxial joint. That's all! It would have been more helpful if this book contained some extra drawings of the cranial bones individually and rotated those bones in such angels (or cross sections) which would have given more details about some parts that aren't visible while viewing the skull as a whole with the bones articulating with each other.

Carpal bones and ligaments are between pages 435-441, and bones of the foot are between 505-510. Here are illustrated: palmar and dorsal views of carpal bones as whole; bones and movements of the writs; ligaments of the wrist, metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal; dorsal, plantar, medial and lateral views of bones of foot as whole; medial, lateral and plantar vies of ligaments and tendons of the foot; 3 radiographs of lateral and anterior views of the ankle, and anteroposterior view of the wrist and the hand. Only one bone, calcaneus, is shown individually and its articulation sites with the other bones of the foot. Only one! The rest of the bones have lost their individual importance.

Having mentioned these minor problems I want to state that this book is, by far, the best resource available for medical school students; it goes hand-in-hand with gross lab. For that reason I have given it five stars. ... Read more

Book Description

Today a brain scan reveals our thoughts, moods, and memories asclearly as an X-ray reveals our bones. We can actually observe a person's brainregistering a joke or experiencing a painful memory. Drawing on the latestimaging technology and the expertise of distinguished scientists, Rita Carterexplores the geography of the human brain. Her writing is clear, accessible, witty, and the book's 150 illustrations--most in color--present an illustratedguide to that wondrous, coconut-sized, wrinkled gray mass we carry inside ourheads.

Mapping the Mind charts the way human behavior and culture have been molded bythe landscape of the brain. Carter shows how our personalities reflect thebiological mechanisms underlying thought and emotion and how behavioraleccentricities may be traced to abnormalities in an individual brain. Obsessionsand compulsions seem to be caused by a stuck neural switch in a region thatmonitors the environment for danger. Addictions stem from dysfunction in thebrain's reward system. Even the sense of religious experience has been linked toactivity in a certain brain region. The differences between men and women'sbrains, the question of a "gay brain," and conditions such as dyslexia, autism, and mania are also explored.

Looking inside the brain, writes Carter, we see that actions follow from ourperceptions, which are due to brain activity dictated by a neuronal structureformed from the interplay between our genes and the environment. Withoutsidestepping the question of free will, Carter suggests that future generationswill use our increasing knowledge of the brain to "enhance those mentalqualities that give sweetness and meaning to our lives, and to eradicate thosethat are destructive." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent way to "catch up" on brain research
Rita Carter and Christopher Firth have put their heads together and come up with a very comprehensive yet accessible review of brain research. Carter's style, backed up with Firth's broad and deep knowledge of the field has yielded a most enjoyable and useful book.

Having followed many of the individual areas of research in the popular scientific press as they unfolded, I had a patchwork understanding of what has been done in the past ten or so years, especially since MRI and PET scans became common, but I did not have a complete and lucid picture.

Carter, with the support of Firth and many distinguished researchers in the field providing Cameo vignettes throughout, succeed in offering the layperson having little more than an interest in the field, an excellent read and a good high level reference source.

The overall design and illustrations in the large format softcover edition is very attractive and encourages reading.

I highly recommend this to anyone vaguely interested in how the mind works from a neuroelectrochemical perspective as well as from an anecdotal, human perspective. This is not a psychology book nor what I think of as a traditional cognitive science book and is much the better for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars (insert eye-caching title here)
I bought this book a while ago, thinking it would help me later with studies etc. I picked it up one night and didn't put it down until two hours later, I was enthralled! Never before had the brain so intrigued me. Mapping the Mind has enough of a balance between the scientific jargon and the anecdotes to really inspire the reader. With help from diagrams, this book explains several mental disorders (such as depression, autistic children and the split-brain phenomenon) with the appropriate physiological explanation. My knowledge of not only the physiology of the brain but also other parts of the body was greatly enhanced by this book and it has led me on to read more about the brain and psychology. I realise this review appears to have a litle too many superlatives in it but if anyone else out there has read Rita Carter's Mapping the Mind, I'd be surprised if you didn't agree with me. (oh, and by the way, it managed to arouse this much interest in me and I'm 14)
Happy reading, Katie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not what i expected but wonderful
A book by an award winning graphics artist. i figured it would be a bunch of pictures of the brain with some text. Nope, it's a ton of text with a fair number of pictures (maybe 1 per 2 pages). Wonderful illustrations but it's hardly a picture book.

i'm a graduate student who builds software that mimics the human mind. i'm not a neurologist so i can't claim to review this book the way an expert would, nor can i claim to be particularly interested in the neurology and biology. But the information in here, which explains what all these parts do and what the impact is if they get damaged was really useful to be as a computational cognitive modeler.

So what do i like about this book? Two things. First, it's pretty comprehensive and integrates the information well. It hits most of the significant parts of the brain and explains the relationships between them. Second, it's really easy to read, which is great when you have readers like me with a minimal background in this stuff. i've since read a lot of books on psychology, cognitive science and neurology. Few are as easy to understand as this one and few put all the information together as this one.

Note that this book focuses on functionality and puts relatively less emphasis on mechanism. Yes, synapses, sheathing, neurotransmitters and reuptake are covered, but don't expect in-depth coverage of the role of glial cells or calcium influx. This is not your MCAT study guide and isn't a references for neurosurgeons doing their residency. But it does have some good information for people who work in or near the field and is easy enough and enjoyable enough for anyone of practically any age to read

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book, Very Pedagogical
I started my interest in neurobiology in December 1998 after reading a discussion by Rita Carter in the FT showing that rational behavior under uncertainty and rational decision making can come from a defect in the amygdala. Since then I've had five years of reading more technical material (Gazzaniga et al is perhaps the most complete reference on cognitive neuroscience) and thought that I transcended this book.
But it was not so. I picked up this book again last weekend and was both astonished at a) the ease of reading , b) the clarity of the text and c) the breadth of the approach! I was looking for a refresher as I am trying to capture a general idea of the functioning of that black box and found exactly what I needed without the excess burden of prominent textbooks. Very pedagogical.
I read here and there comments by neuroscientists dissing the book over small details perhaps invisible even to experts. I just realize that Carter should keep updating it, as it is invaluable in my suitcase when I travel! I do not conceal my suspicion of "science writers" and journalists more trained in communicating than understanding and usually shallow babblers but Carter is an exception. Perhaps the science of the mind requires breadth of knowledge that she has. She is a thinker in her own right not just a "medical journalist".

5-0 out of 5 stars The matter that makes mind
_Mapping the Mind_ is a comfortable and engaging introduction into what is known so far about how the brain works. You will learn (or review) the different parts of the brain, their place in human evolution, and the role of each in the myriad of activities and abilities we all take for granted. Revealing case studies are cited of how damage to a particular part of the brain may impair the sufferer in a very specific and sometimes bizarre way. Carter poses pointed questions about human free will, and to what extent we really have such. This book is a good launchpad for further reading on the brain, e.g. by Damasio and Ramachandran.

The illustrations all have a surrealistic, computer-generated look about them which doesn't entirely appeal to me, but does help unify the overall page design. Most are clear, but for some it may take a while to establish the orientation - L to R, R to L, or looking up from underneath.

Actually, I would give this book four and a half stars; there are various glitches of editing, like repeated material in the same chapter, and some very minor typos and formatting quirks. And the prose takes on just a faint shade of purple here and there, in the spirit of Diane Ackerman (_A Natural History of the Senses_), though I realize this was part of Carter's effort at enhanced readability, and mostly it comes off OK.

Overall, this book is a good plunge to take if you're interested in yourself and why and how you do what you do - and who isn't? ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Principles of Human Anatomy
I only wish my teacher had chosen another book. Many times the author goes on rambling on and on where a body part is located from each other and only confuses the reader and never mentions the function of the body part or with only a simple explanation. Like for example: The greater wings of the sphenoid project laterally from the body, forming the anterolateral floor of the cranium. The greater wings also form part of the lateral wall of the skull just anterior to the temporal bone. The lesser wings, which are smaller than the greater wings, form a ridge of bone anterior and superior to the greater wings. They form part of the floor of the cranium and the posterior part of the orbit. And it ends with that. OK, so what I say! Who cares where the part is located, I can see that for myself in the picture; I want to know something relevant with the part. Also, it is very rare when the pictures is on the same page as the body part; you have to keep flipping the pages back and forth to follow the author's description. I just finished his axial skeleton section and my comment is: it is going to be torture reading the author's dry and immaterial way of writing. The author writes as if he is hiding something from you and you have to dig around to get the information. This is the 9th edition and renew every 3 years when there hasn't been a new anatomical part discovered in decades; ploy to keep the money bag flowing. I only hope that in the 10th or perhaps, the 15th edition the author will let us in on what he is trying to convey. Maybe by then Tortora can get it right.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful & Thorough Anatomy Text
I've found this textbook a useful self-study guide. It is set up logically by body system with accessible pronunciations and definitions and with each chapter building on the next. The illustrations are detailed, informative and easy to follow. Each chapter also contains practical information relating to today's medical practices as it pertains to each body system. I was not as impressed with the companion "A Photographic Atlas of the Human Body" as I prefer illustrations over cadaver photos.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very goog Human Anatomy
This is a nice Human Anatomy Book. The Structure of the book based on Systems in human body rather than zones.I believe this gives a better overall view of the human body. Much better than that author gives explanation of every name first its pronounciation and than its meaning in original language.Pictures are mostly schematic, very few photographs of cut bodies, some scanning electron pictures were very nice.Together with this book I recommend Organ and Tissue book with scanning electron pictures. I also liked the littel windows called "clinical Application; that brings you into real world. Overall I liked it very much, it is more than just parts of body. It is with information and applications. ... Read more
