Book Description

With its strong theoretical focus, this book serves as an essential resource on the functional neuroimaging of cognitive processes and on the latest discoveries obtained through positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques. It is organized into three sections. The first covers the history and methods of PET and fMRI, as well as cognitive networks, showing how the brain regions involved in the different cognitive processes interact. The second part, the book's core, covers PET and fMRI findings in specific domains: attention, visual recognition, language, semantic memory, episodic memory, and working memory. The third part covers the effects of aging on brain activity during cognitive performance and also examines research with neuropsychologically impaired patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent & comprehensive intro
This is an excellent book, focusing on fMRI and PET, that goes over in detail methodology and applications. The methodology sections includes details on the underlying physiology (it's more complicated than just blood flow and 02 extraction)and critiques the commonly used subtraction method, preferring instead event-evoked studies. Going beyond the simplistic concepts of areas "lighting up" being "for" this or that cognitive function, there is coverage of network analysis. The methodology is obviously still in an early evolutionary phase, and each chapter has closing section on controversies and future directions. The application sections cover neuroimaging of attention, visual recognition, semantic, episodic and working memory, and language. There is good critical review of the literature here, and there is no tendency towards oversimplification of conflicting results. There is also a chapter on cognitive aging that I found particularly informative, showing how the elderly utilize different neural networks than younger people to perform various cognitive tasks. The book is about 400 pages and includes 22 color plates. This is a very rich and rapidly evolving research area, and I think this is a great intro book for clinicians in neurology, psychology and psychiatry, as well as neuroradiology, to get an appreciation of what just a few years ago was a science fiction concept...taking pictures of the mind as it thinks. ... Book Description

Principles of Frontal Lobe Function provides a comprehensive review of historical and current research on the functions of the frontal lobes and frontal systems of the brain. The content covers frontal lobe functions from birth to old age, from biochemistry and anatomy to rehabilitation, from normal to disrupted function. Two introductory chapters guide, in different ways, reading of subsequent chapters.Following are a number of chapters dealing with basic science- neuroanatomy and neurochemistry. The various theoretical positions proposed reflect the diversity of approaches to the same fundamental question about the role of the frontal lobes. Some chapters deal with broad, salient issues such as functional heterogeneity versus homogeneity, while others narrow their focus on specific functions like motor control, language, memory and attention, executive functioning, and emotional and social behavior. The book concludes with chapters on applied clinical research such as frontal lobe pathology in neurological diseases and disorders, stroke, and traumatic brain injury, as well as strategies for neurorehabilitation. This book is intended to be a standard reference work on the frontal lobes for researchers, clinicians, and students in the fields of neurology, neuroscience, psychiatry, psychology, and health care. ... Book Description

Since ancient times humans have felt intuitively that emotions and health are linked, and recently there has been much popular speculation about this notion. But until now, without compelling evidence, it has been impossible to say for sure that such a connection really exists and especially how it works.

Now, that evidence has been discovered.

A thrilling scientific detective story, The Balance Within tells how researchers finally uncovered the elusive mind-body connection and what it means for our health. In this beautifully written book, Dr. Esther Sternberg, whose discoveries were pivotal in helping to solve this mystery, provides first hand accounts of the breakthrough experiments that revealed the physical mechanisms - the nerves, cells, and hormones - used by the brain and immune system to communicate with each other. She describes just how stress can make us more susceptible to all types of illnesses, and how the immune system can alter our moods. Finally, she explains how our understanding of these connections in scientific terms is helping to answer such crucial questions as "Does stress make you sick?" "Is a positive outlook the key to better health?" and "How do our personal relationships, work, and other aspects of our lives affect our health?"

A fascinating, elegantly written portrait of this rapidly emerging field with enormous potential for finding new ways to treat disease and cope with stress, The Balance Within is essential reading for anyone interested in making their body and mind whole again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solving The Mind-Body Conundrum
I am a writer who is currently at work on a book on my living through colon cancer. I was diagnosed at age 47 with Duke's C-3 colon cancer. Because of the early onset of my disease, I was three years too young to be considered for routine colon cancer screening, which doctors are supposed to offer to patients when they reach age 50. I was lucky. Even with one year of chemotherapy (due to minor lymph node involvement) medical textbooks and doctors said my chances of surviving five years (a five year colon cancer survivor is considered "cured") were about 35 percent. Now, seven years later, I can say that Esther Sternberg's work validates some key elements of the survival strategy I developed for myself that links health and wellness and emotions.

Sternberg flies in the face of conventional medical wisdom by providing proof that stress can make you sick. She provides evidence that the immune system can be trained, citing the work of Bob Ader and Nick Cohen. And she offers evidence that nerve chemicals or hormones can affect immune-cell function in a physiological way.

This is ironic considering that when you ask a psychiatrist or even a psychopharmachologist how the latest generation of SSRI anti-depression/anti-anxiety drugs (Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa etc.) work, the answer is that they are not exactly sure.

The medical establishment in the US tends to hive off the debate about health and emotions (the mind-body connection) to the area of alternative medicine. New age healing and some of the Eastern approaches tend to overlook the scientific connection. Sternberg taps history and science to frame the issue and if it were simpled down to the level of a mass market audience her book would be a best seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars Through the Eyes of a Sensitive Human Being
Brilliant scientific exploration of the mind-body connection expressed in compelling, animated realism. I enjoyed this delightful learning experience. Dr. Sternberg not only demonstrates outstanding knowledge and expertise in the field of psychoneuroimmonology, but she does so through the eyes of a sensitive, caring human being. A true inspiration to read many times over. Especially recommended for anyone who is looking for a way to enhance their health and well-being....

5-0 out of 5 stars Bold and Daring, Advanced Knowledge!
Dr. Esther Sternberg from the outset tells us that she wrote this book "out of a question" that "seemed ostracized from the rest of the scientific community." Clearly, it seems that the information in "The Body Within" is a daring challenge to present new brain-immune connection information to the lay public, and is determined to not let it stagnate only among the doctoral elite. I found all 11 chapters fascinating and richly detailed, gloriously free of slanted opinions and filled with highly intelligent questions. All 250 pages inform, with its interesting anecdotes and illustrations, and my gratitude goes out to Dr. Sternberg for ensuring that some of us, even though we do not have a "Ph.D" attached to our name, are nonetheless able to grasp concepts as the workings of the brain, the immune system and the role of various hormones and neurotransmitters.

"The Balance Within" is solidly founded in irrefutable facts "collected from rigorously performed experiments." It is a real treat to read about such things as Chapter 5, "It's a Two-Way Street: The Immune System Talks to the Brain and the Brain Talks Back" and Chapters 6 and 7, "When the Brain-Immune Communication Breaks Down" and "Can Stress Make you Sick?" I could easily spoil the conclusions of this book, which I dare not out of pure respect for Dr. Sternberg, especially when she so adeptly investigates such ideas as "Can Believing Make You Well?" Gradually the walls between the public and the scientific community are crumbling down, allowing us to make up our own minds and deciding what is right for our own bodies. This book is groundbreaking, indispensable and should not be out of your hands for another second. You may encounter resistance at first, as the author put it, "Whenever a new field comes into being, it comes up against the older dogmas. So the resistance that we felt was real and steeped in traditions going as far back as Galileo, Copernicus, and beyond...Whenever one tries to change prevailing opinion, resistance is inevitable..." Esther, I want to party with you, sister. A little less I talk, a little more I listen. I'm taking a page from your book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Reviews the science connecting health and emotions
The Balance Within reviews the science connecting health and emotions, providing a history which explains these connections and shows how the body and brain work together. There are links between the immune system and emotions: this shows how health can be affected.

5-0 out of 5 stars As inspiring as it is illuminating
I'm an academic bioscientist but not trained in the immune system. I have always been interested in the brain-immune connection (for personal as well as professional reasons), and I have always appreciated getting the history of a scientific field's evolution -- something that we find less and less time to discuss in the college classroom, much to the detriment of the next generation of scientists. I am a huge fan of this book and this year I am incorporating it into my university courses and seminars. I've recommended it highly to colleagues who also find it valuable. It's fun to read and contains fascinating historical notes about medical science in general. Sternberg discusses how the work of many people contributed bits and pieces to an important emerging story. It gave me what felt like an eyewitness perspective on the birth of neuroimmunology, as well as a fountain of information about the brain-immune connection. It is a must-read for anyone wondering how science comes up with "breakthroughs", as well as anyone interested in the topic. Thank you, Dr. Sternberg and colleagues in the field. ... Read more

Book Description

The Atlas of Functional Neuroanatomy guides the student and practitioner in visualizing and understanding the many parts of the central nervous system (CNS)-the key to knowing where diseases occur. The illustrations include photographs and drawings (some color-enhanced) which have been selectively labeled; each is accompanied by text which explains the structures named and appropriate clinically-relevant comments. The Atlas presents an overview of the nervous system, followed by the sensory and motor systems as they traverse the CNS. These features prepare students to work through the localization process. The atlas also offers a detailed look at the microanatomy, particularly of the brainstem. Radiographic images are also included, along with illustrations of the blood supply of the brain. The final section features a unique set of illustrations, and these serve as the foundation for an integrated view of the structure and function of the limbic system. The accompanying CD-ROM contains all the illustrations from the print version, with the advantage of 3-D visualization and full color. Most noteworthy are the pathways of the spinal cord and brainstem, and the detailed illustrations of the microanatomy of the brainstem, along with color sections of the human brainstem. All of this enables students to approach the diseases of the nervous system with a strong anatomical background. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent clear text
I have been hunting for a concise and clear atlas that would help me visualize the brain in 3-D. Atlases I used in medical school were 2-D, too detailed, disjointed, and left alot to the imagination as to how the brain parts fit togther as a whole. This book takes the guess work out of that and is a text as well as an atlas. It uses airbrush pictures to help with visualization. In addtion, it has the added bonus of including a CD-ROM. It is a delight to read and in only minutes a day, I am gaining a whole new understanding of the brain. The pages are printed on high quality paper and you can easily use colored markers to color in any part of the brain you wish. There is even a suggested color chart. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
I used this book as a reference for my anatomy and physiology class in college and found it be right on target. I like the way the author explains these sometimes hard to understand topics. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Anatomy review
This book is great for a review for first year exams as well as for boards - I highly recommend

3-0 out of 5 stars Not good, not bad
This book had so many rave reviews that I had to buy it. However it appears to be US centric and geared towards the USMLE not gross anatomy. It is incredibly brief and does not contain the depth of anatomical detail that is needed to pass British or Australian medical school exams. Aside from the lack of sufficient detail the diagrams are just average. There are a number of other textbooks that are better, for a book of approximate size I recommend Last's Anatomy, which is exceptional. In my opinion this is not a bad text, but it's not that great either.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great review, needs pictures
Great review for the USMLE Step 1. Good price. I think it could use more pictures. Good organization and with useful details. If you are going to get this book you should get an Atlas (Netter is the best). A good buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the boards
I found this book to be a must buy for the USMLE Step 1. It helped me focus in on key aspects of the material. The book helped me remember facts easier and with less stress. However, I also used the following book which is also on amazon.com:
Spinal Anatomy Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
by Patrick Leonardi (ISBN: 0971999600)

Book Description

In the 25 years since From Neuron to Brain was first published, the authors' aim has remained constant—to describe how nerve cells go about their business of transmitting signals, how the signals are put together, and how, out of this integration, higher functions emerge. The new Fourth Edition, while maintaining this focus, has been completely reformatted and updated.

The emphasis, as before, is on experiments, and on the way they are carried out. Using a narrative approach, the authors follow a line from the original inception of a new idea to an account of research being done today. The wealth of new facts, techniques, and concepts, however, presented a challenge in keeping the book to a manageable size. Inevitably, the authors have had to delete descriptions of certain classical experiments.

Largely in response to readers' comments, elements of format and presentation have been changed for this new edition—more headings have been introduced, the paragraphs are shorter, and the illustrations, now in full color, have been clarified. As in previous editions, references are cited throughout the text, and appendices are provided to help readers unfamiliar with the nervous system deal with essential facts and definitions.

Intended for use in upper-level undergraduate, graduate, psychology, and medical school Neuroscience courses, From Neuron to Brain will be of interest to anyone, with or without a specialized background in biological sciences, who is curious about the workings of the nervous system. It presents a readable and coherent account of how cellular and molecular approaches can provide insights into the workings of the brain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Neurophysiology (History & Evolution)
This book is similar in format and style to Principles of Neural Science by Kandel, Schwartz, & Jessell. Nicholls book is half the length of Kandel's, yet just as good. Colored drawings & diagrams are laced throughout the text. It is strongest in auditory physiology, synaptic transmission, vision physiology, & neural development. Clear graphs and line-drawings of intracellular and extracellular recordings abound. Give this book its chance. It should be on the reading list for Medical & Graduate School.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is an outstanding book - comprehensive, clearly written and beautifully produced, with many useful illustrations.
It takes a bottom up approach, starting with the structure of ion channels and their proteins, and moves on to higher levels of structure and function. Because of the current state of knowledge it is necessarily much more detailed regarding the peripheral nervous system and sensory systems than it is regarding most areas of the central nervous system.
You may be interested in "Phantoms in the Brain" by Ramachandran, a popular but very meaty book that takes the complementary top down approach - starting with the mind as we experience it and looking at medical cases to see how it is constructed by the brain.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive update of a neuroscience classic
This highly readable textbook is probably the only one that has successfully dealt with the explosive growth of research and discovery in the exciting field of neuroscience. The 4th edition of the classic by Kuffler and Nicholls maintains the clear, logical and coherent presentation of its predecessors while keeping up with the latest work involving a range of techniques, from molecular genetics to functional MRI. The book's emphasis on the experimental and intellectual basis of knowledge in the field makes it ideal for graduate and advanced graduate students, even those with limited scientific background. It is doubtless no accident that the relatively compact new edition has kept the breadth and depth of earlier editions without becoming unwieldy. Its only real shortcoming is its hefty price, although it is still below most of the competition. It would be nice to see a paperback edition.

This is not a bad book, but the thing is... the glossory sometimes don't have the word that I want. But the great thing about this book is that has good info... but sometimes is has to be more clear with discriptions. Their goal should be let the student get the info in their head not to makeso hard like if it was a brain twister. ... Read more

Book Description

The field of fingerprinting for personal identification and criminal investigation is progressing at a rapid rate. Numerous research projects are devoted to fingerprint detection techniques and identification issues, and recent debate focuses on the admissibility of fingerprint evidence in US courts. In light of these events, as well as the previous lack of one volume that brings together the scientific and legal aspects of this discipline, the time is ideal for an easily accessible resource that gathers together and analyzes the latest findings and techniques related to fingerprint science.Fingerprints and Other Ridge Skin Impressions features the insight of a recognized team of authorities, including contributors from a key institution for forensic research. Chapters cover all aspects of the subject including the formation of friction ridges on the skin, the deposition of latent prints, the detection and enhancement of such marks, recording of fingerprint evidence, and fingerprint identification itself. Recent advances in statistical interpretation, fingerprint detection techniques, and computer technology are also discussed in detail. This practical techniques manual is an ideal text for practitioners working in the field of fingerprint detection and identification, as well as anyone studying forensic science at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. There is also sufficient background material for legal professionals and police in need of an introduction to the critical subject of fingerprinting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Shaking habits
Originating from the Forensic University of Lausanne (Switzerland), the authors produced an up-to-date register of not only optico-physico-chemical skin impression developments, but also of their interpretation to produce a ridge (fingerprint, barefoot) individualization.
Their historical and scientific approach of "fingerprint science" shakes also the tree of identification dogmatism of both the anglo-saxon system (the certainty of identification is based on empiricist expert's knowledge based on ridgeology) and the more latine one (a pseudo-scientific numerical standard ascertains individualization by a mathematical "statistical" proof...).
Setting the true pillars of fingerprints identification will help criminalists to better understand the place of ridge impression as the most powerful identification tool within the whole spectrum of evidences collected at and exploited from the scene of crime, and hopefully entertain a needed critical approach to upgrade its potential. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for Nutrition Graduate Students
This book is the most comprehensive and up-to-date textbook on nutrition available! The 9th edition has 115 (one hundred fifteen) chapters and multiple sections of an Appendix, updated by 169 authors in 10 countries and from many scientific disciplines. Nutrition science has an extremely broad scope with relevance to all basic and applied biologic sciences, medicine, dentistry, dietetics, nursing, pharmacy, public health and public policy. In one very thorough edition (approx 2,000 pages), this text succeeds at integrating Nutrition science into practical knowledge. For around $100, the price equals 20 cents per page ... making it an extraordinary value! ENJOY :)

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
excellent text! Dr. Dee does a great job at explaining the integration of the body's systems. easy to read text, though not overly simplified; wonderful flow charts & diagrams (these are what got me an A in the class seeing as how i'm a visual learner); "running problems" through out the chapters that test your knowledge along the way. i also highly recommend purchasing/using the accompanying CD-ROM-- very helpful.

1-0 out of 5 stars You got to be kidding
This book has nothing intergrated in it. This woman who claims to write the best physiology textbooks around must be lying.

Her book is [not good]. It leaves out too many details, has a bunch of senseless flow charts that tell you nothing and provides no explanation. I have a copy of her book and it is thinnner the most physiology textbooks. I wonder why its thinner then most other physiology textbooks? Well its because she does not take time to explain the physiology of the human body.

She maybe a good teacher but she can't write a textbook for anything. A 10 year old child can write a better physiology textbook.

I would not buy this book at all. Bad book!

You want a good physiology and anatomy textbook? I recommend Hole's anatomy and physiology textbook. Hole's anatomy and physiology textbook makes Dr. Silverthorn's textbook look like something you clean your car windows with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing pease of work!!!
Having been studying molecular biology for 3 years, this is without a doubt the best book I have read so far! It may leave out some details yes, but the context and the easy-read of the book is truly amazing! Contains well presented diagrams, work-charts, tables and figures - makes it really easy to get a quick overview and understand the basics of human physiology.

Every student in the field of biological sciences should have a copy of this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Human Physiology: An Integrated Approach
An excellent book for a first-year physiology student. It's an easy to read text filled with colorful diagrams and flow charts. At the end of each chapter is a short summary, and review questions of varying levels of difficutly. There's even websites listed where you can learn more, as well as the Prentice Hall website which lists even more review questions. An accompanying student workbook is also available. It's the best physiology textbook I know of.
