5-0 out of 5 stars Unashamedly pro-dairy consumption
Knowledgeably written by a professor emeritus of food science, Milk: Its Remarkable Contribution To Human Health And Well-Being is a scientifically researched and presented response to modern-day claims downplaying or even attacking the health of milk as a food. Unashamedly pro-dairy consumption, Milk backs its fervent emphasis upon the importance of regularly consuming dairy products as part of a balanced diet with research, statistics, and modern scientific wisdom on everything from the nutritional benefits to the flavor of milk. Directly addressing and rebutting animal rights activist advocacy against milk - to the extent of comparing the animal rights advocacy movement to that of a religious movement driven by faith rather than reason - Milk may be passionate in its own advocacy yet its defense of a widely useful, inexpensive, and nutritious foodstuff seems to clearly be needed in the wake of so many media attacks against it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book for Everyone!
This book contains everything you ever wanted to know about milk and more. Written by someone with extensive knowledge and background, the author demystifies the myths about milk and explains its benefits in clear, easy-to-understand language. Book Description

Over the past few decades the quality of many international water bodies has deteriorated, resulting in economic losses from declines in the fishing industry and in tourism, as well as a loss of biodiversity and health impacts from contaminated water. This deterioration has been caused by many factors including nutrient run-off from agriculture, insufficiently treated sewage, drainage of wetlands, coastal erosion, introduction of exotic species, eutrophication and inadequate resource management. One of the most significant sources of degradation has been from excessive discharge of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds (nutrients), due to the poor management practices used in agricultural, domestic and industrial activities.

This publication aims to draw the attention of professionals and practitioners working in agricultural and environmental sectors to the experiences and successes of the environmentally friendly good agricultural practices being used in the Chesapeake Bay Region of the United States to reduce nutrient loads in water.

This book is released as # 7 in the World Bank Working Paper Series. These papers are published to communicate the result of the World Bank's ongoing research and to stimulate public discussion. ... Read more

Small farmers have taken note, and many more beginners are considering cattle as a viable farm commodity. Getting Started with Beef & Dairy Cattle is the essential handbook for this growing audience.

Heather Smith Thomas, a lifelong cattle rancher and author of several previous books for more experienced farmers, offers a succinct layperson’s guide to the basics of raising a small herd of cattle, whether for meat or dairy products. She outlines organic and natural farming methods and covers all the information needed to get started and be successful.

Getting Started with Beef & Dairy Cattle
encourages new and beginning farmers to start small, and start right. Thomas explains as simply as possible the basics of selecting and raising a calf, along with feeding, shelter, and care guidelines. Book Description

The water buffalo is an animal resource whose potential seems to have been barely recognized or examined outside of Asia.Throughout the world there are proponents and enthusiasts for the various breeds of cattle; the water buffalo, however, is not a cow and it has been neglected.Nevertheless, this symbol of Asian life and endurance has performed notably well in recent trials in such diverse places as the United states, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Trinidad, Costa Rica, Venezuela, and Brazil. In Italy and Egypt as well as Bulgaria and other Balkan states the water buffalo has been an important part of animal husbandry for centuries. In each of these places certain herds of water buffalo appear to have equalled or surpassed the local cattle in growth, environmental tolerance, health, and the production of meat and calves.

Although these are empirical observations lacking painstaking, detailed experimentation, they do seem to indicate that the water buffalo could become an important resource in tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate zones in developing and developed countries.

If this is the case, then it is clear that many countries should begin water buffalo research.Serious attention by scientists could help dispel the misperceptions and uncertainties surrounding the animal and encourage its true qualities to emerge.

This National Research Council report describes the water buffalo’s attributes as perceived by several animal scientists. It is designed to present the apparent strengths of buffaloes compared with those of cattle, to introduce researchers and administrators to the animal’s potential, and to identify priorities for buffalo research and testing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Vet Gift
I purchased this book for my vet, since he doesn't see a lot of whole ferrets, and it addresses a lot of breeding health issues.

He is delighted with it, and that in turn makes me very happy. Great chapter on V-hob surgery!

5-0 out of 5 stars Review from a Ferret Breeder's Point of View
This is a very informative and easy to read book even for beginning ferret owner. It presents a interesting viewpoint of ferret husbandry from a "working ferret" prospective. Many of the health problems, in particular - parasite infestation, facing a "working ferret" are not an issue in the United States. But luckily Austrialia does not have the health problems related to ECE.Neither do they have the Adrenal disease problem that the US has because of so many early spays/neuters sold by the LARGE ferret farms.Another reason to go to a private breeder for a healthier pet.

The different drawings on "ferret" environments are interesting with their pond and burrough landscaping.Much of which would not be practical in the US.The average ferret owner/breeder in the US would be much more concerned about their ferrets excellent ability to find a "wayout" and therefore loosing their much loved pet.

All in all, I would highly recommend this book to anyone breeding ferrets, running a rescue/shelter and even to the average pet owner who wants to learn more about their valued pets.

Book Description

From droving to driving, reivers to rustlers, heilan kye to long horns, Plaids and Bandanas explores the links between the two cattle cultures in music, song and dance, and folklore. The vast number of Scots who emigrated to North America has been well documented, whether through forcible eviction during the clearances of the 18th and 19th centuries or voluntarily in the hope of a better life. With them they took their culture, their language, their music and their skills. Cattle droving in Scotland was an established profession from the 16th century, and many such migrants took cowboy jobs in the American West.

The medium of music paints a vivid picture of their social and personal lives and the exchange was not all one way. The music crossed and re-crossed the Atlantic creating strong links between the old culture and the new. Lonely men in strange surroundings found comfort in songs that reminded them of home.

Rob Gibson, himself a musician, knows the power of song. It has a unique ability to evoke and capture emotion and a sense of time and place. Rob has researched the roots of the songs and the routes of the drovers, and established clear and coherent links between the Wild West and the no-less-wild Highlands.

What drew Highlanders to the cowboy life? What problems did the Scots have to overcome to set up a new life? What did Scots do at the Battle of the Little Bighorn? What differences did the Scots find in the culture of the west? How did life in the Highlands prepare them for the life as a cowboy? How did the music develop and who else influenced the development of the old songs? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A cowboy overlooked
I found this book a good read. There are few accounts which consider the European roots of the cowboy phenomenon. The cattle business was the basis of the economyin the north of Scotland for centuries; sheep weren't important until the late 18th century.

The author deals with the background of Amercian cowboys, but he left out one notable cowboy whose family emigrated to Canada from the Isle of Lewis in Scotland.

Donald Morrison is well known to Canadians as the Megantic Outlaw. As a cowboy he drove cattle from Texas to Saskatchewan. He was outlawed after returning to Quebec to help his father save the family farm. He killed a special constable in a fair gunfight, according to witness' accounts, and was hidden by Highland families in the Megantic areafor about a year. Those interested can read Clarke Wallace's 'Wanted: Donald Morrison' for all the details. ... Read more

Book Description

Over the past century American agriculture has shifted dramatically with small, commercial farms finding it increasingly difficult to compete with large-scale (mostly indoor) animal feeding operations (AFOs). In this book, Terence J. Centner investigates the environmental, social, economic, and political impact of the rise of the so-called factory farm, exposing the ramifications of the contemporary trend toward industrial-scale food production.

Just as Rachel Carson's landmark Silent Spring used the disappearance of songbirds as a jumping-off point for a work that raised public awareness of pesticides' devastating environmental impact, Empty Pastures sees the dwindling numbers of livestock in the American countryside as a symptom of a broader transformation, one with serious consequences for the rural landscape and its inhabitants--animal as well as human.

After outlining the rise of the AFO, Centner examines the troubling consequences of consolidation in animal farming and suggests a number of remedies. The issues he tackles include groundwater contamination, the loss of biodiversity, animal welfare, concentrated odors and other nuisances, soil erosion, and the economic effects of the disappearance of the small family farm.

Inspired by largely abandoned traditional practices rather than a radical and unrealistic vision of a return to an idealized past, Centner proposes a series of pragmatic reforms for regulating factory farms to halt ecological degradation and revitalize rural communities. ... Read more
