3-0 out of 5 stars haute decor for your home zoo!
Designing a home to share with your pets.

The flyleaf says: Journalist Julia Szabo is the "Pets" columnist for the Sunday NEW YORK POST & wrote the "Truth in Decorating" column for ELLE DECOR. She is also a frequent contributor to HOUSE BEAUTIFUL, the NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE & TRAVEL & LEISURE. She has written a fresh & witty encyclopedia of every chic option for housing your pets in the style to which they will become accostomed.

Julia Szabo has a lot to say about decorating & keeping pets & homes clean; feed & bath times & clean up materials; toys & dignity.

ANIMAL HOUSE STYLE is a stylish book - begging to be set on a coffee table. Julia Szabo's breathless prose, stories & gossip compliment the glossy photos of perfectly clean & visitor-ready rooms in various well-known people's homes where dogs, cats, ponies, ferrets & birds tidily hang out with a palpable air of culture, on color-coordinated, sometimes whimsical furniture.

A decadent use of your money & an invaluable book if living with your critters in a stylish, colorful & pleasing manner is a must!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's About Time
Here's my take on some of the negitive comments made about this book - it may seem idealistic, but to me it's about raising the rep of "pet owner" to a new level, a higher standard. Working in an animal shelter as I do, I have seen what the author describes about abandoned animals and how easily they are discarded for frivolous reasons. I think a book like this is very needed not only to prove to people that owning a pet doen't mean being a dirty slob but it also reminds pet owners that they need to work out problems and try to think of creative solutions to issues they may encounter with their pets before they give up on a very special member of the family or resort to mutilating their animal (cat declawing).
Not all of us can afford designer furniture, that's true, but I have enjoyed seeing the photos of these animals and their loving owners who are showing the world that Fluffy or Spot have just as much right to sit on that million dollar couch as they do. I have seen sloppy pet owners and I think we all need to be reminded that we have a responibility to keep things on a higher level for the health of the animal as well as the impression we give to others.
Any book like this that promotes adoptiong animals from shelters and giving them good, loving, healthy and above all PERMANENT homes is truly invaluble.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty, Not Practical.
Animal House Style is one beautiful coffee table book. But truely, it is only a coffee table book. It has beautiful pictures of pets on beautiful designer furniture. But not the greatest advice for caring for a home with pets.

Let's get real here, I have a yellow lab that loves to lounge on my dark gray couch. The advice the author gives for removing pet hair from your couch is to get a strong vacuum cleaner! Um yeah, I would have never thought of that without reading this book! Or you can use a roll of tape to remove pet hair from your clothes! Hmmm, that is truely a new idea!

You can tell that Julia Szabo is a true animal lover, and she does have an amazing sense of style. But most of the home decor is way over my price range, like the Gucci bet she got her pit bull. It probebly cost more than my bed! Animal House Style does make you more aware of animal sensativity to house cleaning chemicals and what are good alternatives to your Clorox cleaners. But that is about the only practical advice this book has to offer.

If you are looking for a book with some really cute dog picks Animal House Style is a great pick. But if you are looking for viable solutions to living with pets, don't get this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars not what i hoped for
This is a book about homes that have a pet in them. I wished for a book that was homes where pets were included in the design.
Pretty pictures not much use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pra-cat-ical and terrier-ific advice
The perfect gift book, for wedding, housewarming or any occasion, so long as the recipient is a pet owner. They will thank you profusely, for helping them decorate with their kitty or pup in mind. After reading this terrier-ific book, I realized my home is definitely decorated in a style I think of as classically Boston Terrier black and white. The hair blends in perfectly, so who cares? 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for novice or old timers
We have raised laying hens since the early 80's and have read and owned many a book on chickens, and this one is one of the best. It deals with everything from how to get started, equipment needs, controlling disease and managing ones flock. From egg stage and broody hens (those who sit on the nest and hatch eggs) to feed and water issues and housing and breeds. It is an all around fact book that I think any beginner chicken person should read. And I even learned some new things from the book as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars ABC of Poultry Raising
The book is good for the beginers and also for reviewed by the amature poultry keepers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Material
A great book to use as a reference for the new poultry fancier. This book is a little outdated, but the basic principles are accurately discussed and presented in an easy to read formate. It is a good read and should be in any poultry fanciers library.

3-0 out of 5 stars Did you say asbestos?
Informative, inexpensive book for the beginner, however, be aware that it was written in 1944, with the last revised edition printed in 1977, so there are some out of date suggestions like using asbestos tiles for your chicken coop. Other than that, the book is helpful, a quick read, and provides some plans for simple coops.

Of the three volumes I purchased when starting my family chicken flock this has been by far the most useful. I highly recommend it for the beginning through intermediate chicken farmer! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous photographs of magnificent animals!
Arthus-Bertrand displays the most amazing photographs of breeding quality livestock that I have ever seen. Anyone who appreciates animal husbandry, agronomy, or farm animals in general will love this book. The photographs of bulls are exceptional!

5-0 out of 5 stars A compelling book of portraits -- animals and their keepers.
This is the only photography book I've ever purchased, simply because I couldn't put it down in the bookstore. Since buying the book, I've passed it around to several friends -- some who are familiar with livestock -- and some who are not. Makes no difference. It's impossible to look at this book without going through the whole thing, page by beautiful page. The animals look strangely like their owners (or is it the other way around?). Each portrait is stark and simple, drawing your eye to the relationship between animal and handler. Buy this book. You won't regret it. Outstanding gift! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable but alarmist
This book is very valuable as a reference to a horse owner. The pictures are good, and each entry contains a description of possible symptoms and treatments (which I assume are correct). As a diagnostic, this book seems very useful and something you should have around.

However, as a new pasture owner, I found it incredibly alarmist. So much so that I almost :-) wanted to take my horses back to the boarding stable so I could stop worrying my pretty head about plants. Ha!

Practically every plant that has ever been known to harm a horse is listed, which means that the book is overwhelming. Some of the toxicities are mild and very uncommon, but the text is thick enough that it is difficult to determine whether the plant is likely to be dangerous without close reading. Clover is listed next to locoweed. In some cases, the plant listed is not itself toxic, but it tends to attract toxic fungi, as in the case of fescue. However, when reading the entries, they all have scary-sounding symptoms. It is difficult to ascertain under even a close reading whether the plant in question is really dangerous. There's a difference in my mind between "a nibble will be a life-or-death situation" and "symptoms will disappear if you remove the plant from the diet," and that difference is not readily apparent in the listings.

This book would be much improved if plants that were especially dangerous - plants that are acutely toxic in minute quantities and plants that are especially likely to be eaten in toxic quantities - were more obviously called out. I would love to have a quick icon at the top that tells me "Deadly - remove from pasture using any means necessary" or "Potential Problem" or "Not Likely to cause serious problems." This triage would allow me as an owner to concentrate my first efforts on learning to identify and eradicate the most dangerous plants, rather than being distracted by fescue and clover.

I'm glad that plants that can but usually don't cause problems, like fescue and clover, are listed. It's very useful when trying to diagnose a horse that's not quite right, and if they were omitted, the horse owner might incorrectly assume that the diet was not the issue. I would just like to see them flagged differently or perhaps included in an appendix rather than mixed in with the truly deadly plants that have no margin for error.

As it stands it is better as a reference for answering specific questions than as a book you can just read through when contemplating several acres of plants or potential plants.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for horse owners who pasture their horses
In the author's preface, she describes the reason that she wrote the book, the loss of a treasured friend. Recently (10/02), the nightmare was repeated with a friend of mine and her 18 month-old filly. The case appeared to be a simple case of colic, and the vet treated her accordingly. By the time we realized that the treatment wasn't working, I grabbed my copy of this book and we poured over the description of the symptoms. After matching the symptoms to the possible plant species that cause them, we began a systematic search of the pasture. It turned out that the filly had been poisoned by a common plant under uncommon conditions. Her symptoms were described in detail in the book, along with the treatment. Unfortunately, for us, the treatment came too late to save her.

The true strength of this book is the description of the symptoms and the treatments for the various plant toxins. The pictures and the descriptions of the plants are a starting point, but they will not make the reader an expert in plant taxonomy. They act more as a warning flag to encourage the reader to research similar looking plants in their pasture with a more detailed reference.

I am so convinced that this book is valuable, that I ordered 10 more copies that I plan to give away. I will give them to all of the 4-H horse leaders in the county plus the 4 vets who work with our young horse owners and their parents. Maybe we can, through education, give the caregivers the tools that they need to save a life. We owe them at least that.

1-0 out of 5 stars incorrect information
The idea for a handy guide of toxic plants specific to horse owners is great, however I found some of the information to be incorrect. Photographs are on one page with the description of the flower on the adjoining page. In one instance a yellow flower photo is described on the following page as producing flowers that are pink to white. I would not rely on this book to identify possible toxic plants.

5-0 out of 5 stars horse owners field guide to toxic plants
Extremely informative. Every horse owner should buy a copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for veterinarians and horse owners
This is the best and most affordable compact reference book on toxic plants that I have seen. It lists common name, scientific names & local a.k.a.s. A detailed description of the plant is given as well as geographical distribution, signs of poisoning and a 'what to do' section. The best part of all is that there are full color photos for each plant as well as a drawing. The index allows you to look the plant up by name or by clinical sign (plants that will cause the sign are listed with their page numbers). Indespensible for the veterinarian or student. Useful for large and small animals! ... Read more

Book Description

Chickens-why not? Tens of thousands of people in all areas of the country enjoy raising these birds, whether for food or companionship. You can, too, with this indispensable guide. Then again, you may want to read Living With Chickens just for the sheer joy of it.
Straightforward prose and dozens of clear, detailed illustrations gives any future chicken farmer the tools he needs to get started, from step-by-step instructions on building the coop to a brief background on chicken biology ("gizzard talk"); from hints on getting high-quality eggs from the hens, to methods for butchering. Vermonter Jay Rossier draws on his own experiences and those of his fellow poultrymen in discussing how to keep marauders from the chicken coop, the benefits of homemade grain versus commercial, and how to live (and sleep) with a rooster in your midst. Personal anecdotes, interesting facts, and lush, full-color photographs of the birds and their landscape round out this comprehensive book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book Review
I found this book to be somewhat helpful, but lacking in a lot of areas. For example they did not go into a lot of details on llama care. (i.e. worming schedules, types of wormers, shearing practices etc.) Good if you are into breeding. I am just an individual that has two llamas as pets and wanted detailed info. on their care.

4-0 out of 5 stars The essential book for new llama owners
I first got this book when I bought my first llamas a few years ago. It was the one recommended to me by the breeder. Since then, it is the book I recommend to all those just starting out with llamas. It is also the book I recommend to those who just think they might want llamas. The book has information on everything, from basic conformation to packing and showing. What it lacks in depth of information, it more than makes up for in references. I still run to this book when I have questions, and have read it through several times. If you are thinking about getting a couple of llamas or a whole herd, read this book first!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent starter book for novices
Gale Birutta has put together a well thought out book, that covers all aspects to owning llamas for a novice.

Chapters cover selection, care, feeding, training, etc., each in enough detail to cover the topic, without becoming boring or overbearing. Quirks of the animals were covered ( they are head shy as a breed trait), that alone kept us from making mistakes when visiting llama farms.

The information in this book was invaluable to us when we began visiting llama farms. We actually knew what we were looking at and could ask intelligent questions of the owners !!

Well done, write another !! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book says it all!!
Thank GOD for Ferrets for Dummies! Ms. Schilling has owned pet ferrets for many years and it shows! But what's even more helpful is that she writes about ferrets from the perspective of an adoring owner as well as a foster mom to ferrets awaiting new homes. She doesn't hold back and lets the reader know that ferrets aren't for everyone. Because of that, both the ferrets and the readers win! There's nothing sadder than a ferret in an uninformed home! On the flip side, if after reading Ferrets for Dummies you believe a ferret or two or three is for you, you will be well prepared! Bravo to the author for discussing those issues which many ferret fanatics (myself included) try to brush under the table.....such as odor, litter box woes and problem ferrets! Ms. Schilling was not only able to tackle the difficult issues with style and grace, but also with a great sense of humor - essential to any ferret owner! I can't say enough about this book! It's the best! I know many people who decided that ferrets were DEFINITELY for their household after reading Ferrets for Dummies! And there were a few that decided ferrets might not be the best pets for them! Wonderful! Matching the right pet with the right family is what it's all about! I hope Ms. Schilling keeps on writing!! She has a fan in me!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for ferret lovers and first time ferret meeters
Ferrets for Dummies is the only ferret book I have read that can be usefull to both new and old ferret owners a like. For new ferret owners and even first time ferret meeters, this book really helps the reader get to know the general personality of ferrets. Ferrets are a wonderful pet.......for the right person. Ferrets for Dummies helps you know if a ferret is the right pet for you before you go out and buy one. If first time ferret owners read this book before they went out and purchased a ferret, there may be less homeless and neglected ferrets and a smaller need for ferret shelters. This book helps explain what to expect from your ferret and how to care for it, from before your new pets arrival home until its final days!! I highly recommend this book to anyone interested or involved in ferret ownership.

5-0 out of 5 stars If ferrets could read, they would read this book!
Over the years I've had many ferrets, and have read many ferret books. And so far this is one of the best I've found.
I recommend it to everyone. (from people thinking about getting their first ferret, to people that already have a housefull)

A few cartoons, and lots of ferrety humor.

It's a must have for any ferret lover!

4-0 out of 5 stars A perfect book for beginners
True to the "...for Dummies" series philosophy, "Ferrets for Dummies" is a fine survey of all the basics you need to know in order to take care of ferrets properly. It even includes a touching chapter on how to deal with and survive the impending death of a ferret as well as the passing itself. I've read this chapter repeatedly after the death of several ferrets.

The only two changes I would make to this book are (1) more details regarding the cancers that, unfortunately, most ferrets will eventually develop (specifically adrenal gland tumors and insulinoma), and (2) overall a more serious tone. The tone of the writing veers away in a couple of spots from solidly informative towards silliness, but I've found that this is characteristic of almost all the "....for Dummies" books so I suppose that is a critique of the editor and publisher more than the author. Also, this "homespun" style probably makes the text more palatable to beginners and the curious. I volunteer for a local ferret shelter and have fostered numerous rescued ferrets, and have no hesitation recommending this book either for those getting involved in the same thing, or those who simply wish to have a single pet ferret and know nothing about how to go about it.

Until a more advanced book comes along that really delves into significant detail regarding ferret care, "Ferrets for Dummies" is pretty much the definitive book on the subject. Keep it on your bookshelf as a reference, and read it in conjunction with some of the many other ferret care books available to get a really rounded view of what is involved in taking care of ferrets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended Ferret book
I think the wide range of positive aspects of this book have already been discussed, so I won't repeat what has already been said. What I will say is that I have not spoken to a single Ferret person who has not strongly recommended this book for both first-time and veteran ferret guardians.
Such widespread positive word-of-mouth really speaks for itself. ... Read more

If you can't own them, you'll still want to read about them-witness the recent success of books such as Extraordinary Chickens and Living With Chickens. Another book is soon to hit the poultry bestseller list: This hilarious account of a rookie poultry-owner's experience raising birds in his backyard. Move over Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt (both rumored to raise chickens), Martin Gurdon has written the first "chicken memoir" of its kind. Bound to be a classic, Hen and the Art of Chicken Maintenance follows the Gurdon family through the ups and downs of this wonderful hobby. In addition to providing eggs, the hens offer distractions from everyday life-BB has terrific telephone etiquette, the spirited but weak Yvette requires Gurdon to act as a personal trainer, and Wimpy is soon renamed Psycho when she's allowed to brood three of her eggs. The book chronicles the daily life of a chicken, including dust baths, brutal pecking-order rituals, gender-bending encounters, and, for its owner, the possibility of huge vet bills. The relationship between bird and human is by turns heartwarming and bewildering, but always entertaining. In fact, readers might even learn a thing or two about raising chickens in this lively book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The book is a no-nonsense, fact-filled resource.
I have a homestead in Peru (near Cusco / Machu Picchu). I wanted to raise my own meat; thus I bought a dozen chicks. As life dictates they grew and the day came for eating. I gave the first chicken to my housekeeper to kill and clean. She smothered the poor bird by holding its beak closed and plugging the nostrils. The suffocation process took about two struggling minutes. Not a good way to kill a bird, I thought. The second chicken was given to my hired hand, and he killed the bird by stretching its neck three times. Yes, a better method, but really, what do the professionals recommend? Thus, I initially bought "Storey's Guide to Raising Poultry", to find the most humane way to kill poultry.

The book is a no-nonsense, fact-filled resource. Written for those who are serious about raising poultry (chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, game birds and other poultry). Written by a professional poultryman, the book covers nutrition, disease, immunity, housing, breeding and management in a comprehensive manner.

The writing is clear, terse and complete. The diagrams and drawings are good. The book has a superb index, along with a good glossary, a list of associations, an appendix that gives you sources of supplies and equipment, and much more.

The descriptions of the breeds of poultry could be better. The one paragraph given to various breeds is inadequate for those who are unfamiliar with breeds (Wyandottes, Australorps, Araucans etc.). The feed section is bias towards commercially packaged feeds, and gives little to no information on homemade mashes. In Peru, we must make our own mash, or go without.

All-in-all, Storey's Guide it is a lot more book than I initially needed. But, after reading through the book, I was both impressed and intrigued enough to consider raising other types of poultry. Hum, maybe turkeys are next. I did use Mercia's recommended method for killing chickens (sever the jugular and insert knife for debraining) and must confess that killing a chicken, regardless of the methodology, is not my preferred hobby. Strongly Recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars If you only get ONE book for your poultry Library, THIS ONE
I picked this up at the public library to skim over and take back but after having it for just one week, I must have my own copy. The wonderful knowledge that is presented in easy to understand directions from all aspects of poultry. The nice part is they have instructions how to build most any poultry equipment you might need and this would be great for anyone, especially home schoolers.
I am getting my copy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference and learning Tool
Goat Medicine is a MUST for folks who have goats and want to understand and learn about goat health and diseases. Don't run your veterinarian off! but this book can help the owner/manager recognize symptons, understand prevention and work out reasonable treatments...treatments that work into an already too busy day. Yes, there is theory.... Great if you like to understand and run ideas through your own head. skip that part, if it doesn't make sense, and go onto more basics-- prevention, control, treatment.

If my 75 animals aren't 100%, this is the first book I open. And the book stays on my truck seat, kitchen table, bedside until some questions are answered. There are many books with basic goat care. If that is what you want, fine. If you want to dig a little deeper, understand goat health and learn more about your animals, then THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU!! Well worth the money..just by saving/helping one animal.
P.S. Exceptional for international goat health..if that's your thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A cracking good read for old billys and young kids alike!
Never in all my years have I found such a moving and touching tale, disguised within the often dry confines of a medical textbook.

Full kudos to the authors, and to those bounders who complained about the lack of detailed information in the "poison plant" section, well, what do you think your village wise-woman is there for? Certainly not her good looks, at any rate.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's OK I guess
Having a vetinory background, I frankly think that some of the so-called 'cures' are a bit dubious, but this book really helped when our flock came down with red-scruff mange last sprong, so I guess it falls somewhere between "invaluable" and "childish scrawlings".

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent review of the field
This book is a very thorough review of the literature on goat medicine. Its bibliographies alone are worth its price. The work seems primarily intended for veterinary students, researchers, and veterinarians willing to consult the literature (Dr. Smith is on the Cornell University veterinary faculty). It isn't intended as a cookbook of treatments and will disappoint if consulted in this way. But if one needs a basic understanding of any aspect of goat medicine, this is where to start reading. The authors provide coherent, thoroughly referenced overviews of each topic that provide frameworks for evaluating individual research papers. Anyone caring for significant numbers of goats, even if not a scientist or academic, should regard this as a necessary textbook of her vocation. She should at least absorb the overviews, even if she does not consult the references. We look after 250 goats and could not navigate without this book. I only wish a new edition would be published, to take in work done during the last seven or eight years.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Goat medicine, Theory Only
This book is not for practical use. I could not find any information on real medicine. The definition of medicine to me is the corrective and preventive care for the health of the Animal. This book gave a lot of useless high flown theory. Even the section on poison plants liste all of the plants with only the botanical names of the plants. I had to check out a plant names book from the local library to identify the plants.

This book deserves no stars and does not belong in the medicine catagory. Even a Vet that I took this book to for advice said that it was useless ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My veterinarian said this is the best book she uses!
I do cat rescue and needed a detailed reference book on veterinary medications.I asked my veterinarian what book she recommended and she said that this was the best book by far.She prefers it over other medical textbooks that costs hundrends of dollars.I purchased this book and use it all the time now.It has helped me resolve medication related questions in emergency situations. This book has more than paid for itself in the $$ is has saved me in veterinary bills.I highly recommend this book for anyone who needs access to information on veterinary medications, especially when it's a night or weekend and I cannot contact my veterinarian. This is a must have book for anyone who works with animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best drug handbook on the market!
I've had every edition of this drug handbook for about 10 years now, and I use it often.I've seen lots of "other" veterinary drug handbooks, but they pale in comparison to Plumb's.There's just the right amount of information here--not too much, not too little.Other handbooks seem relatively lacking in content.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't practice without it.
This is the only book that I have that I use every single day!

5-0 out of 5 stars great for vet students
I am a senior veterinary student and use this constantly on clinics. Its very helpful to look up medications that animals are already on and possible interactions with drugs you want to prescribe.Has drugs listed by generic and manufacturers names so they are quick to look up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just more of the same excellent stuff
If you are familiar with this book, this is just the latest update, so go and buy it. If you are not, you have been missing one of the best helps that a veterinary practice may have. It is simply a collection of monographs of 90% or so of the most used drugs in a veterinary hospital (YOU will have to get the other 10% and, I assure you, it will take plenty of your time). They include everything that a conciencious veterinarian wants to now, and then a little more. The language is simply enough for any professional to understand even if one's chemistry and biochemistry is a bit rusty. What are you doing reading this? Go and get it; your patients and you need it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of class!
Third Edition: A thorough compendium on feeding most types of livestock. Nutrient needs of most classes of farm livestock can be found in many sources, but I bought the book especially because of the information dealing with feeding dogs, cats and rabbits.

I recommend the book to anybody interested in producing domestic stock or wanting to understand nutritional needs of their pet dog or cat.

I hope a future edition will include game and exotic stock, such as elk, deer, reindeer, mink, ostrich and emu.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book to supplement lectures
Truly helpful in clarifying points in the lecture of a feeds and feeding class. Could, however, use examples of ration formulations. ... Read more
