Book Description

This comprehensive, step-by-step laboratory training manual brings all the elements for a successful embryo transfer program together in a simple, organized, illustrated format. For the last several decades, artificial insemination has allowed genetic progress to be achieved relatively quickly through the widespread and efficient use of frozen semen. As a result of the advancement of embryo transfer (ET) techniques, cows can produce many offspring. A more rapid genetic gain is achieved which complements an artificial insemination program. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars amazing breadth of job paths covered
I originally thought that the main focus of this book would be about veterinarians, in fact, it covers the whole range of animal related careers, from working in a pet store to becoming a vet, and all the places you could go after you've become a vet. It has a very helpful chapter on the process of getting in to vet school. The financial aid and acceptance policies are different from those of other schools, and all fall under a single overseeing board for all the schools. All the schools are listed here along with contact info for each. All very detailed. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Domesticated Ringneck Doves
There is not enough information given on the domesticated Ringneck Dove. The book emphasizes too much on avaries and wild dove behavior and husbandry. It actually states that keeping a Dove in a cage is not a good idea when the Ringneck is a very good cage bird--but they do have specific husbandry requirements that need to be addressed.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on doves I have found
As a dove owner,I have found this book to be a very clear treatment of dove species, behavior, and health needs. The pictures are interesting and the information provided is far superior to other books on doves that I have read. My only complaint is that more information could be provided on nutrition, but since most dove are such easy keepers (mostly eating seed, millet spray, whole wheat bread, vegetables, and grit) the information on this need not be extensive. I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering adding a dove to their household.

3-0 out of 5 stars Generally well-written but really about wild species only
The major flaw in this book is that it is nearly totally devoted to the wild dove and pigeon species. It makes very little reference to the domesticated Ringneck and White Doves (Streptopelia risoria), which make excellent, tame pets and have different requirements, in terms of caging and care. Also, what references it does make to domesticated doves is somewhat confusing and inconsistent.

For example, photos of domesticated Ringneck and White Doves (Streptopelia risoria) are labeled, alternatively, "collared pigeons" on page 16, and "collared doves" on pages 37 and 40. However, on page 5, the birds labeled as "collared doves" are probably the Eurasian Collared Dove (Streptopelia deocato). I realize that both species may be described by the same common names. However. I think the author should have done a better job in describing which is which, since 'Streptopelia risoria' is extremely domesticated and suitable as a finger-tamed house pet whereas 'Streptopelia deocato' is a wild species suitable only for an outdoor aviary.

This confusion is not only in the photos but in the text as well. For example, the sections on "Housing" and "Doves as Pets" make little or no distinction between the wild and domesticated species. It implies all doves are basically untamable and require large aviaries but then also gets into a discussion about cages. Cages are really only suitable for domesticated species but the book doesn't SAY this anywhere. There is also no mention, anywhere in the book, of the great pet qualities that domesticated Ringneck and White Doves have. So, in my opinion, this book would be very confusing for someone who purchased a tame, domesticated Ringneck or White Dove and want to know how to care for their new pet.

I think this book would be fine if it just stuck to wild dove species. In fact, it should be renamed "Wild Doves". Domesticated Ringneck and White Doves (Streptopelia risoria) really deserve their own separate book but, unfortunately, there really isn't one out there yet. "Doves" by Michael Gos makes a better distinction between domesticated and wild species but his book also tries to cover both types, in one one book, and can also be similarly confusing in text and photo labeling.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books about doves
I have looked for books on doves and believe me they are hard to find. This book starts with understanding how a dove thinks and goes into breeding, behavior, feeding, handling and types of doves. This book is a keeper if you are a novice or expert. It covers all the need to know information and more. In my opionion, this is the only book you need to buy if you are interested in doves.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written, dedicated and knowledgable.
The information provided in this book is very informative. However, I would have liked to have seen a chapter dedicated to caged doves, as indoor pets and the husbandry requirements but there was more focus on wild doves and outdoor aviaries in general. Would these same principles apply to indoor caged doves? What type of dove is the one pictured on the front cover? This type is often commonly seen in pet stores. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book about Terri Crisp's devotion to saving animals
I am a 13 year old girl, and I just finished reading this book. My friend reccomended it to me and gave me the book, telling me that if I didn't enjoy the book I could just stop reading it. It never crossed my mind to stop reading it. It was a great book, one of the best I've ever read. Even if your not too into animal stories, the book tells about one amazing woman and her lifelong pursuit to save animals while still caring for a husband, 3 children, and pets of her own.

4-0 out of 5 stars review based on personal acquaintance with author
As a Dir. of Human Resources, I read a lot of resumes. When I read Terri Crisp's resume nearly 10 years ago, I knew she was right for a job as HR administrator--but what was this "cat trapping" she listed as a hobby? When I interviewed Terri, I discovered that she spent her spare time trapping and humanely relocating cats and kittens that had been abandoned and gone wild. Sometimes they were sick, sometimes they were dangerous, sometimes people just wanted them "gone." As I grew to know Terri and we worked together, I found out that there was nothing sentimental in her attitude towards animals desperately in need. She loved them, but she recognized their potential danger to other animals, to people and to the environment. Now, many years later, she devotes her time and talents to rescuing animals threatened or stranded by natural disasters. She trains volunteers, takes substantials risks herself, and has become a highly successfull professional. I know, however, that the instincts that inspired her first amateur efforts at cat trapping--a sincere and rational dedication to the rights of animals--still exist. This is her story, and an inspiration to anyone who "loves animals" and wants to put that love to practical, important use. It's also full of suspense for action lovers. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ
I truly loved this book. Staying up until midnight some nights reading, it kept me wanting to read on to the next chapter. After reading this book I have a whole new perspective on how animals are treated. It never occurred to me that animals take that big a blow during natural disasters. I sympathized with the mistreated animals, and laughed at the comical creatures. I would suggest this book to anyone, animal lover or not, it was a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
If you love animals you'll love this book. The stories are heartwarming. I laughed & cried all through the book. Terri is an amazing woman & her work continues with Noah's Wish. BR>Read the book and if it speaks to you like it did to me you will want to get involved in helping animals and their companion humans in times of disaster.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got em!!!
Because of a simple trapping tecnique Terri taught me in this book, after 2 years of trying, I FINALLY trapped a feral cat in my neighborhood. If you do rescue work, this book is for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Goatkeepers Bible
I've had a copy of this book for at least 25 years and read it over and over. It is by a Brit, but so what? Make the stretch. It covers so many aspects of the subject that transcend goats that it would be informative to anyone interested in land management and animal husbandry in general. He deals with concepts of nutrition ecology and health hardly ever dealt with today, such as alternatives to the use of mainstream comercial feeds, rearing methods and things too numerous to mention, and all from a unique perspective. A true lover of goats. It's THE Bible of goats, written back in 1957 and never equaled to my knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BIBLE for goatkeepers.
This is a highly technical treatise oriented especially for Brits. Don't let that scare you though - it is a terrific book worthy of shelf space on any serious goatkeeper's library.

I have not found a better source within one book for dairy goat information.

You'll find a lot of useful information if you're wishing to learn about dairy goat farming. If, however, you also want to learn about meat goat production, buy Raising Meat Goats For Profit by Gail Bowman.

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly technical in spots, but with a wealth of info...
This is a reference for a serious goat owner. It is not one I'd recommend for someone just getting into goats. But if you're really serious about your caprines, this book is a must-have.

The topics covered include: Control and Housing of Goats; Principles and Practice of Feeding; Selection of Breeding Stock; Breeding Problems; Disease and Accident; Milking and Dairy Produce; Meat, Leather, and Fleece; Goat Farming Systems; Crops for Goats; Goats for Export; Harness Goats; and more.

There is a thorough index, a bibliography, and several appendixes. The info is presented in a rather dry manner, but is very useful. There are lots of great diagrams, charts, and pictures. It's just a ton of good information. The only major fault I can find is that being published in Great Britain, it does use some terminology unfamiliar to most Americans, and doesn't deal with the US at all. But that's ok, we have enough other books which cover those topics.

Bottom line, if you're looking for a really good, technical reference book on goats of all types, this is an important one to add to your library.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better Suited for Brits
Lots of good anecdotal advise, even humourous at times. The chapter on goat health problems, poisons, and antidotes has proven useful, and is well organized. Genetic discussion on link between hornless goats and sexual malformity is thorough and necessary.

However, the book is written for a British reader, and lots of the medicines, practices, and even forage crop names, are different in the US. (e.g. lucerne = alfalfa) Delves heavily into dairy goats and dairy farming, but meat goat farming (Boers, Kikos, etc.) is only cursorily mentioned. The section(s) on nutrition is excessive for the average goat farmer, and the copious information about UK regulations is useless to the US reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best resource book on goats I've found.
What a gem this book is. It contains information on everything you could possible want or need to know about goats. My goats are pets and this book - although not geared toward goats as pets, but as dairy producers -- contains more information than I was able to find in days upon days of internet searches, 3 other books I purchased, and from picking the mind of people who 'know goats'. It contains many different housing situations and options, goat behavior, herd behavior, nutrition, health, disease, -- just to name a few. I highly recommend it to anyone keeping goats for any reason. ... Read more

Collaboratively written by David Congalton and Charlotte Alexander, When Your Pet Outlives You: Protecting Animal Companions After You Die is a solidly written and "user friendly" resource for pet owners wanting to ensure that their animal companions are taken care of in the event of the death of the pet owner -- especially since pets are legally classified as property under American law and as such cannot lawfully inherit money directly. Setting up a pet trusts and veterinary care contracts, and the wide variety of options to ensure one's pets are taken good care of, and more are all discussed in depth in a "must-read" book for all true pet lovers.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best ferret book I've ever seen!
This is absolutely THE BEST ferret book I have ever seen. It is a wonderful training guide and tells you exactly how to live with a pet ferret on a day-to-day basis. Not only do you get practical advice on litter training, handling, walking your ferret on a leash, food and housing, etc, there are great sections that give you step-by-step information on training techniques. I like the chapter on teaching your ferret to come when he's called by using a squeaky toy. The authors tell you exactly how to go about this, step by step. And it works! The chapter on traveling with your ferret is wonderful-- all the things you would never think about are covered. Best of all, the chapter on Ferret Proofing your house or apartment is a life saver for ferrets. You have to read it! As an added bonus, there are about 80 colored photos that range from those cute shots we ferret owners expect, to details that show you what to do in each chapter. If you're a first time ferret owner, YOU NEED THIS BOOK. If you're an experienced owner, it's still great to have-- you might find a number of things that you hadn't thought about before. As I said before, this is THE BEST ferret book I've ever seen for telling an owner how to live with their pet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some good info in there..
This isn't the best book out there for ferret information, but it does have some interesting tidbits in it and a bunch of cute pictures. I haven't been able to successfully use many of the methods talked about in the book with my ferrets, but it's possible they work for someone else. Every ferret is different! I give it four stars because some of the information is good, and the pictures are adorable. For the price, I can't complain. :)

1-0 out of 5 stars Trite, affectatious waste of ink
Do authors needing to start every thought with inane questions make you giggle more than thorazine? Do you have have commercial grade insulin handy for inoculations after every annacdote {which is on par with Elvis sightings?). Then this book is for you.
Having raised seven and now that my girlfriend has added eight and nine ferrets I feel I a qualified to comment on the usefulness of this book - nil. We added this book to qualify for free shipping while ordering Ferrets for Dummies - a much better buy. {loads of valuable info}
Read Ferrets for Dummies and if you have a bird line the bird cage with with Ms. Somerville's exercise in ferret dreaming.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best
Training Your Pet Ferret is the only book I have read that really does go in depth about how to train your ferret. It is filled with useful tips and advice on how to raise a better pet. Each page in the book has information that you can use. I have used many of the tips in this book and they all have seemed to work out perfectly for me. I am very satisifed with this book. As it says in the authors note, this is not a general care guide. This is a training guide. The only thing that I thought was bad about this book is the ferret pictures. The ferrets pictured in this book always look sad and unhappy. That is the only drawback, other than that, this is a perfect book for a new ferret owner or a ferret owner that has owned ferrets for many years.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is really great!
I bought this book and found it extremely helpful. I don't know where the reviewer from Toronto was coming from in the Oct.25, 1999 review! The plastic taped to the carpet worked wonders with my ferrets! Just because one ferret rips tape to get under the plastic mat doesn't mean every ferret will. Mine didn't. The great thing about this book is that it gives lots of options to try. The authors take into consideration that not all ferrets act the same...and that's why I love this book. The pictures are the best. I found the advice very practical and helpful. This book is much better than any other ferret book out there. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
Frankly, I didn't think this book was worth the money. There is quite a bit of misinformation in the book, and since it was originally released in Europe, the pictures of the chickens in it are identified as they would be in Europe which is pretty meaningless to folks in America. Folks here who would be looking to purchase bantam chickens using the names in this book wouldn't be able to find them, and the book does not give the equivalent American name.

On the other hand, the photography is magnificent! If you just want a book with really nice pictures of bantam chickens, this one is really great. However, the rest of the book leaves a lot to be desired.

I particularly liked the way the author tries to give an insight on behaviour, and how chickens 'tick'. I'm very pleased I bought this book! ... Read more
