I was looking through an old file cabinet in my office and found the solution manual for the 3rd edition of Mood, Graybill, and Boes. It was apparently put together by Boes and published by McGraw-Hill. It is fifty pages long and answers a lot (but not all) of the questions. Perhaps those who have expressed an interest in the manual should contact McGraw-Hill. Take care.

A beautiful text of mainstream statistics, starting from scratch and taking you clearly to a good standard. If it provided answers to exercises, it would be perfect for self-study. Nevertheless, still amazingly clear without sacrificing the rigour and precision of the maths.
This must be the first book for anyone who wants to take on probability and statistics seriously.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book; a must for engineers and scientists alike
Kalyanmoy Deb has put together a great summary of the state of affairs in multiobjective genetic algorithms. Should you be an engineer or a scientist involved in the optimization of any design of sizeable complexity, you should read this book and become familiar with the techniques that have evolved over the last decade into powerful methods of optimization. This book is in many many ways bridging the gap from Michalewicz's and Fogel's book ("How to solve it") to the more modern era of this field (eg late nineties up to now...). So whereas those two authors never really considered multiobjective genetic algorithms, Deb plows through with the great expertize of a (perhaps even "the") leading researcher in that domain. This is a great book of _receipes_ with the level of details necessary to make use of them. It's a "how to" book; this is the one you have cracked open on your desk while you're hard coding it all up. However, it's not very well written with the prose being very terse and basically quite unengaging. But so what! In some sense yes perhaps, but Michalewicz and Fogel made a point that one can write technical litterature that one can also read. Perhaps they went overboard... in any case, Deb's book is about algorithms so who cares about whether the book puts you to sleep and it can do that, unfortunately. Apart from the unengaging style and the paucity of depth in the examples scope, the real problem with the book is not with the book itself, it's with the field of multiobjective optimization based on evolutionary methods. It's fairly evident that there is not much of any sort of fundamental understanding available at this time in support of why evolutionary techniques do work well, and they do, sometimes... If this understanding is available, you won't find it in Deb's book. If you are like me though, you won't care all that much really so long as the techniques are efficient and presented in a way that make them useable, and that's done right... But on the whole, it's a little unsatisfying because one's left with a panoply of various techniques and ways to define operators and representations but there is no insight given on which one might be best or how to craft them to particular situations. There is a lot of so-'n-so in reference this and that did it like this and it seems to work well there, however... The reason for this state of affairs is, of course, that nobody has a real clue, yet... But that is _not_ Deb's fault and this is not why, as a user, I'm not rating his book a full 5 stars. In some sense it could be rated as high as that but I thought the presentation was rather unengaging and not with all the breath and depth it could have had. So it's a 4.5 stars perhaps... let's say... but Amazon does not let me select 4.5 stars so it's 4, this edition at least...

I somehow liked it's approach, mainly because it avoids a lot of descriptory jargons and talks straight in mathematics: the language of scientists and engineers! College Algebra is quite authorative on the subject matter covered and helps the student grasp the key points as well as some of the finer points of Algebra. While I was in this course I had the most difficult time trying to find certain supplements the book suggested that were put out by the publisher. Some gaffes in this book, I don't think the author has any real understanding. He even messes up the definition of expectation, and it doesn't get more elementary than that. There are many better probability books out there, don't choose this one.

This book is on the course of reading for the Society of Actuaries and Casualty Actuarial Society jointly sponsored Course 1/Exam 1. Although all the probability books listed on the course of reading are good, this text is probably the one to choose. The book seems to be designed with an actuarial student in mind, and an actuarial student would find it very useful for self study. A solution manual is also available.

The quality and level of the writing are excellent. It covers all the required probability topics, and emphasizes certain topics that are not usually emphasized in other texts. Some of these topics are conditional probability; distributional form of Law of Total Probability and Bayes Theorem; conditional expectation; limited moments; mixed probability distributions; survival distributions; hazard or mortality functions; special continuous distributions used in survival analysis (Weibull, Pareto, etc.); compound Poisson and other compound distributions. All but the last chapter on option pricing would be required reading for Exam 1, and the last chapter useful for Exam 2.

A very useful feature of this textbook is that in Chapters 5 (Special Discrete Distributions) and 6 (Special Continuous Distributions) the distribution theory is very clearly outlined. For example, relationship to other distributions, distribution of iid sums, limiting distributions, etc. are clearly stated and summarized. In addition to Exam 1, this text will also be valuable as a reference to study for Exam 4.

Students who would have difficulty with the level of this presentation will also have difficulty with SOA Exam 1. ... Read more

Horn and Johnson's MATRIX ANALYSIS AND TOPICS IN MATRIX ANALYSIS are true classics (like Knuth's Art of Computer Programming). You will find classic theorems and lemmas in matrix theory and linear algebra here along with their proofs (some of these are not found elsewhere).

TOPICS IN MATRIX ANALYSIS contains a lot of stuff including LMI's, Kronecker and Hadamard products of matrices and their properties etc. I found this book indispensible when I was studying Semidefinite Programming.

Both these books are now available in paperback (cost around 30+) dollars each. I have recently purchased both copies and can only strongly recommend them to anyone else. ... Read more

The authors state early on that this book is intended as the first book an aspiring game programmer should read, and I would agree that for the most part it lives up to that goal. Many 3D game programming books include math primers covering a chapter or two, but really, 3D math is a huge topic deserving an entire volume. This book provides a great service, then, in that it thoroughly covers most of the basic topics that graphics programmers need to know, in a tutorial style that should be accessible to all beginners. Hopefully, we'll start to see more game programming books that focus on their core material and defer coverage of 3D math to books like this one rather than trying to pack unavoidably incomplete coverage into a few dozen pages.

So, what exactly does it cover? It starts off with a couple of chapters on coordinate systems, and then spends three chapters on vectors, followed by another three chapters on matrices and transformations. It then covers orientation, comparing matrix, Euler angle, and quaternion representations (including one of most clear explanations of quaternions that I've encountered), before diving into several chapters covering geometric primitives, including detailed coverage of working with triangle meshes.

The book closes with a chapter applying 3D math to graphics in areas such as lighting, fog, coordinates spaces, LOD, culling and clipping, and so on, and another chapter on visibility determination, touching on things like quad- and octrees, BSP trees, PVS, and portal techniques. The explanations in these chapters are much less complete, taking more of an overview approach. Others have criticized the book for this, but I feel that an overview is appropriate, since it then sets the stage for these topics to be covered in detail in other game programming books.

I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone just getting started with game and graphics programming.

Our goal in writing this book was not to cover as many topics as possible, like some other books, but rather to hit the most important concepts thoroughly. If you are a beginner, or have some "holes" in your understanding of matrices, Euler angles, left-handed vs. right-handed coordinate spaces, or key graphics concepts like zoom or the lighting equation, this book is for you.

A feature of this book over other books is the extent to which we have tried to develop the reader's geometric intuition, rather than just presenting numbers and equations. We show what the geometric interpretation of each mathematical operation is, why you would ever use that operation, and, in many cases, how the equation was derived in the first place. We do not gloss over "minor details" such as row vectors versus column vectors, or left- versus right-handed coordinate spaces. These "minor details" make all the difference in the world when you are trying to use an equation out of a book.

For the more advanced reader, we offer some of the clearest and complete discussions of some more advanced topics such as quaternions and barycentric coordinates. The book can be used as a reference for many important vector and matrix operations and identities. It also has a toolkit of many important equations for geometric primitives and intersection tests.

Our focus is on theory, so the book is not a big code dump like many books. The code we have provided consists primarily of "utility" classes for vectors, quaternions, and matrices. I think you will find that our code is simpler to read and understand than most code you will find elsewhere. We also offer some unique and thoughtful advice on good class design, specifically targetted to classes for doing 3D math and getting it right the first time, without twiddling minus signs or swapping numbers experimentally until it looks right

I need to create a 3d math library for a project I was working on and wanted to take a look at some book on the subject. This one looked like one of the 14 year old 'how to make a video game' type books and I wasn't expecting much, however I was pleasantly suprised by the depth of the 3d mathematics in the book.
As an example i was unclear about how to calculate the inverse matrix correctly for an n-dimension matrix and the book goes over calculating adjucts and determinats, and inverses for a n-dimensional matrix both supplying the general math and some C code. The code i didn't find helpful, simply because I coding in the python c api and not straight c, however it could be helpful to someone writing in C.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking to brush up on quaternions, eulers, matrices, and vectors as this book is simple and to the point. I think the author did a great job balancing the complexty of the math with simplicity in the book's text. The book goes over what is really the essentials of any 3d math library. ... Read more

If a textbook has anything to deliver, it should explain, show and demonstrate to the reader the ideology, argument and conclusion of the topic at hand. I am unfortunate enough to own this book and it failed in all counts. In fact many of my college mate (at MSc level) get more confused AFTER reading this book. I would say pay less and get the Outline book series instead.

This book provides a very broad coverage of probability and stochastic processes. The problem sets require a decent amount of effort for none of them are trivial. One of the better books for probability.

I think this book is good but very difficult to read. If you are beginners of probability, I suggest read other books like Sheldon Ross's "First Course in Probability" or "Introduction to Probability Models".

3-0 out of 5 stars A Very Terse Treatment of Graduate Level Probability
I was a bit surprised that this book was so terse, given the postive comments given by others. I would recommend having at least the Schaum's outline handy when reading this book, especially if you want to really understand the more basic concepts well. The authors don't make any effort to expand/expound upon the basic concepts of probability so that the student understands how to apply the ideas in the exercises. However, it would seem that the authors enjoy spending more time writing about the less mainstream ideas and topics encountered in this book.

And the exercises....well forget it. Those exercises will take up your entire weekend as you struggle through them, and the answers given by the authors in their companion answer guide are not much help in enabling understanding of the material.

I mostly agree with the positive reviews of the 3rd edition of Grimmett & Stirzaker's *Probability and Random Processes.* I wanted to address the criticism by the previous reviewer and add some detail regarding the 3rd edition (I suspect that the prior reviews might be based on the 1st 2 editions of the book).

(1) The prior reviewer might have a point in that this book may not have as many exercises and examples that are worked out to be helpful to the learner. However, this is because there is a companion book -- *One Thousand Exercises in Probability* (2nd ed.) -- that is designed to provide those examples and exercises. That book contains the answers/solutions to each and every exercise posed in that book. That book also closely follows the topics of this book. Together, those 2 books by Grimmett & Stirzaker should meet all of the requirements for self-studiers of probability theory. [Really, the 2 books should be seen as a set.]

(2) The 3rd edition of this book (along with exercises/answer book) cover a wide range of topics from probability starting from basics and going up to applications like queueing, Monte Carlo & Markov Chain Monte Carlo, Ito's Lemma & financial option valuation, etc. In short, this set of books should enable the sufficiently motivated to go from basic probability to a point where they can approach useful problems in applied probability (rather than toy problems offered by other books which, by the way, don't usually give the answers).

This is an extremely nice introduction to Bayesian statistical methods. It takes you from the very basics - even who Thomas Bayes was (who happens to be buried in Bunhill Fields cemetery in London with William Blake (Songs of Innocence and Experience, Jerusalem), Daniel Defoe (Robinson Crusoe), John Bunyan (Pilgrim's Progress)).

Its chapters are divided into sections forming an Introduction, Foundations, Generalizations, Modeling, Inference, and Remodeling. There is also a section summarizing the basic formulae and alternative non-Bayesian approaches. A rich reference list, subject index, and author index are also provided.

If you are familiar with the math of undergraduate statistics you should not have a problem with the math notation in this book. This really is the standard text you find on most shelves of folks who are familiar with this subject. There are many books to read beyond this one, but this is a fine place to start.

Recently there have been a wealth of good books published on Bayesian methods and the Markov chain Monte Carlo approach to its implementation. For the beginner Berry's introductory book is a good place to start.

Bernardo and Smith are experts in the field who have participated in many of the Bayesian conferences held in Valencia and much of that lterature is contained in this book. They originally wrote the book in 1993 (with a publication date of January 1994). This paperback edition is not a revision but rather a reprinting with corrections. The original hardcover edition was very expensive and this paperback edition makes the text more affordable and should greatly expand the list of Bayesian specialists and other statisticians and practitioners that read it.

The authors intent was to extend the classical work of Bruno deFinetti who popularized the Bayesian approach with his two classic probability books. One of the authors was involved in translating deFinetti's books into English and they are both well familiar with it. In this book they offer an extension to the area of statistical inference.

The beauty of deFinetti is the logical and systematic nature of the presentation but he did not extend this to statistical practice. These authors maintain the systematic approach and review the probability axioms but then go on to cover statistical modelling including how models are approached through concepts of exchangeability, invariance, sufficency and partial exchangeability. The chapter on inference covers the Bayesian paradigm, the use of conjugate families, asymptotic methods, multiparameter problems and the thorny issues with nuisance parameters. It also includes a number of methods of numerical approximation including Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods.

The authors deliberately left the coverage of computational methods brief as they planned a second volume to cover it in detail. But in the preface to the new paperback edition they admit that they have abandon this plan due to the evolution of MCMC methods as the dominant numerical approach and the wealth of new texts that adequately cover the topic.

I suggest that this text is the new bible for Bayesian statistics because I think it replaces the old bibles, Lindley's two volumes (some may argue for Savage's book). This is fitting as both authors attest to being students and disciples of Dennis Lindley. The reason I think it is worthy of bible status is because it covers the foundations in systematic detail, is current and very complete. The text contains references from 1763 (Bayes' original treatise) to 1993 covering an incredible 66 pages of the text. With 20 plus references per page that means over 1320 references!

This is an intermediate level text that requires advanced calculus but not measure theory. Emphasis is on concepts and not mathematical proofs. The authors also provide an overview of the non-Bayesian forms of statistical inference in Appendix B. The authors confront the controversial issues in each chapter. Bayesian statistical methods are treated in the framework of decision theory and ideas from information theory take on a central role.

This book provides a thorough introduction to Bayesian theory and decision analysis. It presents a coherent defense of the subjective view of probability that is driving many new technologies, including probabilistic graphical models, data mining, information retrieval and machine learning, as well as, classical problems such as control and econometrics. It is therefore a must for students and practitioners in these fields. The new, reasonably priced, paper-back version makes the book suitable for university courses on model selection, conjugate analysis or Bayesian statistics in general.

I had a chance to read this book cover to cover. All I can say is "absolutely outstanding", short of calling it a historical masterpiece in the field. Very rarely do I encounter an epidemiology or biostatistic textbook that reads so well. It is optimally reader friendly; the author appears to have such a talent in explaining some most sophisticated epidemiological and statistical concepts in such a simplified language. Yet he does not sacrifice the inclusion of some very advanced epidemiological and statistical concepts. New concepts such as causal graphs and instrumental variables are also included and explained beautifully. I strongly recommend this book to all early to intermediate graduate students majoring in Epidemiology. Established epidemiologists may wish to read this book to refresh and update their knowledge. This unique book has it's good points. It attmepts to show how to use different types of statistical analyses work together and what order to use them in.

However, it is poorly written. The authors will start to use terms and ideas that may or may not be defined two or ten pages later, or maybe in a following chapter and you're never quite sure if something will be explained or whether this is something you should already know. This makes for a slow and aggrevating read to the neophyte. Sometimes it seems like a concise statement of the subjects it addresses, but maybe only after you already have mastered them.

If the authors reread the book with a fresh eye, it could be edited and rewritten into a real treasure. Excellent start

Get it now -- don't wait!

As might be expected from the title, Steele's book includes an in depth exploration of the Cauchy Schwarz. It, however, includes so much more -- for example, many, many useful inequalities are set forth in its pages. But even its richness in range and number of inequalities (and equalities) is secondary to Prof. Steele's method of explication. For the real fruit of this book is the techniques and confidence built by the exercises and exposure to the examples. The exercises feed and bolster confidence in approching or deriving familiar and more importantly, never-before-seen inequalities, a confidence which grows with each page and exercise. Techniques that might normally only accrete after years of experience in the course of undergraduate and graduate mathematics courses are set forth one after another. On top of that, this is one of that handful of mathematics books that you can read almost like a novel. It's so readable and rewarding/interesting and engaging that when people have asked me what I have been reading lately, I can answer with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: "a book on the Cauchy Schwarz inequality" -- which I never said about Royden, etc. These techniques are vital for many types of research -- applied mathematics, CS, economics, statistics, (and competitions) to name a few -- in all of these areas finding bounds can play a central role in research. This is a very good book for graduate-level courses. It is especially useful if the student took an elementary level Bayesian Statistics/Econometrics course. The organization of the chapters are different from most other books. Chapters contain between 40 and 60 "little sections," where a section can be one paragraph long. It is easy to understand what is fundamental and what is peripheral while reading the book.
However, it has a considerable number of errata. It is quite difficult to understand why the author have not prepared a list of errata and corrections. The errors are generally not conceptual, but usually mathematical typos. They also exist in some problems, which first make you think they are unsolvable. It can take some time to figure out where the error is. Moreover, errors also exist in some solutions inside chapters. The best thing the authour would do is to prepare a list of corrections on his website (this is done by many authors in the field such as Peter Lee). ... Read more

This text is more of a formula-reference with examples and is written for persons with substantial statistical / mathematical background. While I am sure that the text represents substantial value for those with substantial backgrounds in statistics / mathematics/ calculus, the rest of us may be somewhat less enlightened by the text. Make sure you have read over your Statistics 101, 102, 201, 202, 301, 302, 401, 402, 501, 502, Calculus 101, 102, 201, 202, and committed these texts to memory before reading this text. If you never met a formula you didn't like...this text is for you. The author does not hold your hand through the math and if you lack the background required, the book may have better use as a paperweight.

This is a wonderful source of information on methods for analyzing spatial data. It is still reasonably current for this rapidly developing area in statistics. You won't find some of the latest research on the joint modeling of space and time. But I expect that Cressie is working on a book that will cover it. It is an encyclopedia of references. The author covers the gamut of techniques. This explains why the book is so lengthy. I think that if he plans a revision he will be more selective and only cover those methods that have proved to be the most promising. Here you can finally learn what kriging is and even see how the bootstrap can be applied to spatial data.
