Nitric oxide (NO) is a gas that transmits signals in an organism. Signal transmission by a gas that is produced by one cell and which penetrates through membranes and regulates the function of another cell represents an entirely new principle for signaling in biological systems.

This book deserves 5 stars on the basis of its color stereo diagrams alone! Well done. I wish I had this book when I was starting out as a graduate student! A very good explanation of structural hierarchy. Plus the book also contains excellent details of structure of proteins belonging to specific families -for ex., antibodies. Even today, for my work, I find it very convenient to look into the book first for some structural information rather than into the PDB databases. And yes, I do have a very good pair of stereo glasses always on hand!

This is truly a monument to the architecture of proteins: a gorgeous tour of the structures that dwell within us. The "frozen music" of biology is clearly presented in beautiful detail. The computer-generated renderings give pause to anyone who wonders what God was up to when She thought about creating life. Proteins, as represented here, are Her finest efforts. Visually stunning is only the most obvious aspect of this amazing introduction to structural genomics (proteinomics): the systematic study of protein structures. This is a serious graduate level textbook.

The text should be considered for any introductory graduate level course in biochemistry. Beginning with sound chemical principles, the text lays a solid foundation for the concepts of secondary and tertiary structure within protein. The author builds a superstructure from which to view the motifs of cofactor binding domains and active sites in enzymes.

Each chapter concludes with exercises, problems and "weblems". The weblems underscore the fact that structural genomics, a branch of bioinformatics, is a hot topic in the biotech arena. The weblems ask the reader to pursue ideas on the world wide web. The author provides the reader with a wealth of websites ranging from browser plug-in software for viewing crystal structures, to sources of those structures, to sequence alignment servers which will allow the student to do real research. Well thought-out, the weblems posed are useful to the student in exploring the topics of each chapter.

The author sticks to protein architecture avidly, issues of how proteins fold or how structure might be predicted from amino acid sequence are presented to the reader. It is a credit to the author that he does not speculate on these very hot research topics. The bibiliography for each chapter is current to mid-2000.

A student using this text will have greater insight and understanding of the literature of protein structure, folding, and prediction of structure. This book would also be a useful reference to the veteran practitioner, summarizing an early 21st century look at this field. ... Read more

As an emerging discipline, Microarray analysis is somewhat overwhelming and this book provides an excellent overview and introduction. While it does not give the reader the ability to perform high level data analysis, it certainly provides the criteria which would be necessary to design one. I personally rather enjoyed the casual and light hearted editaorial handling of what could have been a very dry text. I am an engineer, interested in the techniques of Microarray analysis more than the actual execution, but even I found the book extremely valuable. An excellent introductory and intermediate text. Readable by and valuable to almost anyone with a basic background in and understanfding of the life sciences. Extraordinary and a great addition to any library!

The Microarray Analysis book by Dr. Mark Schena does an excellent job of taking the reader thru the multiple technologies and science disciplines required to understand and use the power of the microarray. It's interdisciplinary and broad approach allows complete understanding of the field without wasting time on aspects of the field which are sill evolving. It's elegantly written. Chapter 13, which talks about the use of microarrays in genetic screening, testing and diagnostics, is one of Schena's greatest accomplishments, in a historic and socio-economic sense. This contribution alone, makes the book a must read to prepare for the microarray revolution in medicine, agriculture, ecology and bio-threat detection. Strongly recommended reading for anyone seriously interested in Microarrays, be they students, professors expanding their horizons or CEO's hoping to mine microarrays. Hats off to Dr. Mark Schena!

Some biochemistry books proceed to describe metabolic pathways with scant reference to the physiological context in which they occur and then fill the conceptual gap by including a chapter on regulation and integration of metabolism. Not this thoughtful and cleverly designed book. From the start the authors make it clear that they are going to tell us the story in terms of one crucial unifying concept: which pathways are activated or inactivated when we eat or when we fast?

With this approach the reader never loses sight of the big picture, ie, what's going on in the body at any particular time. And then, when we do reach the chapter on integration of metabolism, most of the work has already been done for us: the chapter then operates as a useful review of what we have already been told.

The book does not miss any opportunity to make us think in terms of the big picture, and furthermore, it is never afraid of saying something more than once if it needs to. Just one example to illustrate this point: Lipoprotein lipase. Action and properties of this enzyme are detailed in the context of digestion of chylomicrons (p 497), storage of TAGs in adipocytes (p 512), integration of metabolism (p 561) and the influence of insulin levels on gene expression of the enzyme (p 564).

The early introduction of the fed and starved states is also useful in other ways. The student perceives right away what the point is of learning those endless metabolic pathways and studies them with much more enthusiasm and not just thinking that biochemistry is but an unnecessary obstacle they have to overcome to get to the more clinical stuff (at least I'd like to think so!). Inspired by this book I have organized my course in that way and I am convinced that it is the best approach.

This book is different from its contemporaries in many ways. First of all is written in a clinical approach format which is very interesting for medical students. Most of the biochemistry textbooks are dry and vast and difficult to grasp the information needed for a medico.
But the Marks helps to learn to use biochemistry in the process of Clinical Problem Solving. With a lot of diagrams and clear text it is easy understand.
The Clinical Material is presented in the form of real patients.
It is a student friendly text with which you can learn biochemistry in a funny way of solving the clinical cases.
It can be used as a main textbook for self study.
I strongly recommend the Marks for all medical students.

Texts are not easily to follow. Diagrams and help notes scatters around pages which make readers confused. If you are preparing for Step 1, I recommend you study Lippincott Biochemistry, Board Review Series.

I love this book on biochemistry simply because it was the easiest to read, with diagrams and pictures even dumb people like me can read (gg). I also found that it is very comprehensive also. Some of the other titles I've read on the subject (Lippincott, Harper's) did not go into the detail of this one. Another positive note is that this is a clinical book also; giving you case studies in each chapter to test your knowledge. I can't say enough about this book and even referred it to one of my friends. Although not required in Chiropractic College (Lippincott was), it should have been the standard. ... Read more

I'm giving this book a high rating because it fills a niche for which no other text exists: An absolute beginner's guide to patch-clamping. Yes, you could read Neher & Sakmann's hefty "Single Channel Recording" but, for the complete novice patch-clamper, it's a bit overwhelming.

So, you walk into a patch-clamp lab, there's a million different things on the rig and you're feeling very confused. The microscope is much more complex than the microscope you remember from high school, there's cabling literally everywhere, and everybody keeps mentioning how important it is not to disturb the "voodoo" shielding.

Where do you start? What do all those instruments do? Will I ever patch a cell on my own? This is the book for you.

The book does an excellent job explaining the main components on a patch-clamp rig (and advice for setting up your own if you're just starting up a lab) and gives detailed instructions on whole-cell patch clamp techniques. (I have not evaluated the single-channel techniques but they too seem quite well written.) Also, many simple "equivalent circuit" diagrams are given so that you can understand what you're measuring. You will patch successfully after reading this book!

My only criticism is that the book is a bit skimpy on what to do after you've got the cell patched. Only a few voltage-clamp techniques are explored and there is very little on experiments using dual recordings.

Otherwise, it's an excellent book. If you're new to patch-clamping, this is (literally) the only book for you. ... Read more

I am currently trying to use this book for a Biochemistry course that I am taking. Considering that I have close to "Zero" knowledge in Chemistry, this is probably the best book that I can use for a variety of reasons (see below)

1) Book is in color

2) Although best to study the book chronologically, its not impossible to skip chapters. There is a great Glossary index at the back of the page which has some definitions written into them. Furtheremore definitions seems to be clearly/concisely written throughout the book, very helpful.

3) Examples written throughout the book with soultions.

4) Parargraphs are kept to a minimum so that you wont get too bored reading through the text.

I am giving this book a 4, but from my limited experience of looking at chemistry books this is the best one thats out there.

It won't be a breeze studing this book, but there are many more books out there which makes the task of studying chemistry a lot harder then it is.

I checked this book out at my local college and kept renewing it so I could finish more chapters. Finally I ran out of renewing times and decided I really needed to own my own copy.

The book is detailed and precise. It is relatively hard yet light on math and what there is is explained well. It has great graphics and clear explanations that make the most advanced topics easy to visualize and understand. The problems at the end of the chapter are great for review.

It's the best introductory chem book I've ever seen. Better than any chem course.

This book is excellent for the Bioorganic chemistry. I went into my class terrified and overwhelmed. I was actually able to follow along better with the book than my actual teacher. The diagrams are clear cut and gives many examples. I love the factual clips in every chapter about nature or medicine and how this all relates to bioorganic chemistry. I found the clips a breather and a break from the complicated matter. I did not have any special prior knowledge in biology or genetics. I needed to quickly get up to speed in this area for a professional reason. Parts of the book were a little difficult to understand at times, especially when it used many technical terms, but overall it provided me with an excellent overview of this fascinating and rapidly evolving field. I reduced one star because of not seeing enough illustrations and diagrams which in my view are essential in any text that includes complex concepts. With this book I also read "Genomes" to complement the basics of Genomics and together these two books did the trick!! Strongly reccomended to anyone who is interested in the field.

The greatest difficulty with this field is that it is currently evolving at a rapid rate. Thus, books on the subject run the risk of being outdated before publication. I am very impressed with the breadth of subjects that Dr. Kresina covered and how he was able to relate their associations with either molecular medicine and/or gene therapy. More importantly, he draws the two disciplines together in a logical and constructive manner. The book is not only an outstanding introduction to molecular medicine and gene therapy, but will be a valued reference guide for much of the information contained in the chapters. The topics are timely and most of the authors extremely well known and respected in their respective fields. While the second section of the book is primarily the clinical application, it draws very nicely from the more basic science introductory chapters. Chapters 13-15 and the Appendix provide a discussion of issues which undoubtedly will become significantly associated with advances in molecular medicine and gene therapy. Comprehensive references of bochemical pathways are not common, especially with well described cofactors, modulators, and interactions with disparate pathways. This book could provide such a useful reference, unfortunately, the quality of the layout is so poor as to make it very difficult to read. Poor graphic quality, exceptionally small fonts, and poor color choices render what should be a most useful reference into a visually challenging document. At the price, the book is a disappointment, although the content is great. One wishes that the editors would rerelease it after completely revising the graphics and production quality, as the content is indeed very useful.

I wish there was a way to give a book more than five stars, because if there was, this book would get them! One of the most important trends in cell biology in recent years is the study of mechanics at a single molecule level. Since most of the really interesting processes in cell biology, such as division and motility, ultimately are carried out by molecules that convert energy into motion, the question of how these molecules actually move has very broad implications and impinged on everyone. However, in order to understand this, one has to understand some basic physics which of course involves some math. The biologist who is interested in this subject thus has two, and only two options. one is to bury one's head in the sand and say its just too hard to understand, and the other is to read Joe Howard's book. Although the mathematical content is readily apparent, only the basics are needed to get started. The author has thoughtfully compiled detailed derivations at the end in an appendix, so that one can see the details without becoming enmired in them on first reading. Considering the potential difficulties of taking a "hard science" approach to cell biology, the book is remarkably easy to read, which is a tribute to the thought the author has put into presenting the subject in the most logical possible way.
In addition to being an excellent entry point for biologists into this subject, this book would also be an excellent resource for engineers who become interested in cell biology (like myself) because it presents many of the current research frontiers in cell biology from an essentially engineering perspective and using quantitative reasoning. Again, the author has taken great pains to present the subject in a logical way that does not require much prior knowledge about biology on the part of the reader. Thus, either for biologists who want to learn about the quantitative/physical approach to cell biology, and for engineers or physicists who want to learn how they can apply their type of thinking to problems of cell biology, this book is highly recommended. ... Dr. Cichoke shows how every life process depends on enzymes. He covers a broad range of subjects starting with digestion, elimination, co-enzymes, how to obtain more enzymes in your diet and through supplementation. He has a 5-step program of do's and don'ts, including avoidance of aluminum cookware, refined sugars and salt, coffee, and so on. He also tells you how and what to eat and how to prepare foods for the best utilization of enzymes. Dr. Cichoke addresses a large range of health problems from extending life to AIDS and cancer. He also covers medications that affect enzymes, including OTC drugs and prescription drugs, as well as foods that contain enzyme inhibitors. This is a great book! One I believe everyone should own. I also would strongly suggest Dr. Cichoke's book "The Complete Book of Enzyme Therapy". This book is set up very much like the "Prescription for Natural Healing", however it addresses health from an enzyme point of view. I would rate them both a 5-star, must have if you care at all about your health. This book was required reading for my Enzymes class, "The Complete Book of Enzyme Therapy" was not, but after reading this one, I wanted to know more. This book is a great intro to enzymes, the complete book goes even further.
