Why so large?
I am a University of Minnesoota student and we use this text for our introductory Human Anatomy course. (Unfortunately they came out with a new edition and I couldn't sell it back to the bookstore.) Strictly in terms of the content this book was average because I often needed more information on certain aspects of the human anatomy. My real frustration was due to the fact that I feel the publisher should have supplied a carrying case specifically designed to carry such a large, awkward book. I realize that the size contributed to larger pictures but I feel it was a bit overboard! Finally, as I mentioned before, a new edition came out very recently. The new book resembles the previous edition too much. It's unfortunate we live in such a capitalistic society as to allow such a situation to take place.. ... Read more

The Mercedes of Undergraduate A&P Books
I used this book as a student, and refer to it frequently as a reference. This 1000 + page text explains the structure and function of the complicated, detailed human body in a logical, easy to understand manner. Everything about this book is user friendly including the presentation order, the writing, and the graphics. In each chapter, Marieb presents the big picture before zeroing in on the details. For the body's systems, (digestive, endocrine, respiratory, etc.) Marieb overviews the system, and then explains the gross and fine anatomy and associated physiology.

Here are a few of the many features I find impressive: * Graphics: Very impressive photographs and illustrations. The electron micrographs are spectacular. * Tables and charts - These greatly simplify the learning of complex concepts. For example, in the immune system chapter, there's a good table explaining the first and second lines of defense. * Medical applications - Common diseases are overviewed in the appropriate chapter, for example epilepsy is discussed in the neural integration chapter. There are occasional basic pharmacology and sports applications, such as diuretics and blood doping, respectively. * Making connections feature - Marieb shows how the system being studied relates to the other systems in the body.

This is an absolutely state of the art A&P book, and each edition is better than the last. It's expensive, but you get a lot for your money. It may be too detailed for some, who would be better served by her "Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology" text. If you're an A&P student, I recommended you use her workbook as well. I've found that working through the exercises really helps this information stick.

Great A&P book, written in friendly style
Elain Marieb presents a really wonderful anatomy and physiology text. It provides a colorful feast of pictures and charts for the visual learner without skimping on the important details in the text. Marieb's writing style is friendly, informal and descriptive. Her writing can get quite theoretical at times but she always comes back to earth with a common example.

This book is best suited for health sciences students (medicine, nursing, physical therapy, pharmacy etc.) as the book is littered with clinical applications. However students taking A&P at high school and undergrad level are well catered for. The book works systematically, from basic biochemistry to the organ systems and system interactions. Genetics and inheritance is also covered briefly.

What else is on offer? A large glossary (invaluable to an A&P text!)and a prefix/suffix table. There are chapter summaries and test quizzes. Some may enjoy the CD ROM computer interaction aspects, there's also access to Elain's internet site for A&P students.

Some of the material gets quite tough as the book progresses, but with re-reading and reference to other texts, students should quickly get a handle on the material. I previously owned a copy of the condensed "Essentials of human A&P" and traded it in for the full edition. I don't recommend students get the condensed version unless they are confining their A&P study to high school or 100 level college study.

In conclusion, this is good first textbook and greatly aids in one's course of study. Marieb takes the unimaginable complexity of the human body and presents it in a fun, relatively easy-to-read, lively text.

Great for A and P students, must buy
I used this book for both my Anatomy and Physiology class in undergrad. I found this book to be pretty easy to understand. Of course, at first it is overwhelming to know how much you have to remember for the test. At least, writing style of this book made A and P easier to learn. The material is presented in organized fashion. However, if you really want to know the type of questions asked on college Anatomy and Physiology Exams get the following which is on amazon: Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations Volume 1(ISBN: 0971999619) and Volume 2 (ISBN: 0971999627). These two helped me to get A's on my exams. The textbook and the two study guides are well worth the money since they helped me to pass with high grades the first time. I was recommened the study guides from my cousin who used them for his A and P class and found them to be great for test preparation. I give each book 5 stars.

Yes, but...
This book is an outstanding achievement for a single author, and I have learned a great deal from it. I like the graphics, the layout, and the wealth of information. However, I do find many paragraphs and passages in this book difficult to follow, usually because crucial details are missing. See, for example the explanations of ossification (pages 181-183) and the countercurrent mechanism in the kidneys (pages 1022-1026). It took me less time to digest a whole book on the immune system than the corresponding chapter in this book (chapter 22).

There is a web site associated with the book, which gives the student an opportunity to ask questions. I submitted a couple of simple questions several weeks ago, but have yet to receive a reply.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any A & P book at this level that would be better.

Excellent textbook and a must buy
The author of this book is an excellent writer. She makes learning anatomy and physiology easier. This book is divided into so many topics like skeletal system, nervous system, circulatory system. This book helped me as a undergraduate A and P student. It helped me form the foundation of my knowledge. Good study guide for microbiology students
I thought this book was a good source for summarizing microbiology subjects like telling the difference between staphylococcus and streptococcus in a very understandable way. It gave good summaries and served as a good source for studying for my college microbiology exams. If you really want to know the type of questions given on college microbiology exams get the following;

The latter study guide helped me to prepare more thoroughly for the kind of questions encountered on my finals and midterms. I highly recommend both books.

A work of art in the popularization of biology and medicine
If you are looking for an easy going text on such
a complicated topic as microbiology, you have just
found it.

In very accessible language, dr. Alcamo tours the
whole block, covering bacterial metabolic pathways,
describing bacterial and non-bacterial pathologies
to industrial applications such as the making of
beer. As stated in the introduction, emphasis lies
on applications of microbiology to pathology.

Each chapter ends with some student review questions
for thought and discussion, which I found particularly
interesting, as they pretty much covered all topics that
where discussed.

Margin notes explain the pronounciation of words through
phonetic notation and act as an online glossary. They
seem patronizing to those familiar with the subject matter,
but come in handy for the layman.

dr. Alcamo's writing style is entertaining and anecdotical.
As such, it is a great contribution to the popularization
of science in general and physiology and medicine in
particular.

I see only one point of possible criticism: chapter 2
on the principles of chemistry is superfluous for those
familiar with (organic) chemistry and too concise for
those who lack the background. In view of the further
covering of bacterial metabolism, I'd suggest an
extension of this chapter on the mechanics of organo-
chemical reactions.

An excellent text and reference book
This is a great introductory microbiology textbook that also serves as a good reference book. Microbiology is not my own field of study, but I developed a personal interest in learning something about bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Microbiology could be a very dry subject, but Dr. Alcamo makes learning about microorganisms very interesting and entertaining. I have found myself, on several occasions, looking something up quickly in the book, only to find myself still there reading on other stuff an hour or two later! (Wish I could say the same thing about all those textbooks I used to get my degree...)

Best Microbiology textbook available

Best entry level book
This book by Charlie Janeway is considered to be one of the best books for entry level students. His colleagues say Dr. Janeway cherished every moment that he spent in shaping this book since he took utmost joy in teaching and training students. Eventhough he is no more physically, his book will be read and remembered by almost every student in Immunology. The treatment of subject, arrangement of topics and the figures in this book are at the very best. I am sure that readers will be able to absorb the basic principles in a systematic way with sound experimental insights which will be with them forever.
You also have the advantage of seeing the immune system as a friend as well as a foe. This book beautifully explains how immune system protects us from infections as well as creates major health problems when it doesn't work properly. This way of learning Immunology helps you learn the subject with big picture in mind. I strongly recommend this book for every student who takes introductory or intermediate level course in Immunology. Accurate, clear and comprehensive immunological knowledge
Janeway's Immunobiology is probably the best immunology book that someone really interested in immunology should take to the mythical desert island. One can enjoy it by its clarity from the basic graduate courses, and then keep reading it when doing research and pursuing hypothesis on the most advanced immunological topics. Many times I have found better organized and complete information on this book (even the old editions!) than on the latest reviews on specialized journals. The intense and careful work displayed to promote the real understanding on the concepts and the relations between immune components is impressive. Even more, the success in explanation is such that the authour takes the risk to have his book neglected as "too easy" by first time readers. However, immunology researchers in contact with the often chaotic and contradictory immunological literature can really appreciate the incredible amount of critical work invested and the intellectual gift of the author (authors) to abstract complex immune phenomena into nicely designed and biologically precise "cartoons". The focus on the evolutionary and functional consequences/origins of the immune mechanisms and structures makes Janeway's book one of the most refreshing and valuable voices in a sometimes too-technically oriented discipline. An impressive accomplishment never praised enough.

a good start
This is an excellent primer for anyone wishing to learn more about immunology. For the more advenced student, Bill Paul's Fundamental Immunology is a must.

This book rocks!
This is by far the most well written immunology text I have encountered. Even the most difficult concepts are presented in the most understandable manner. This book is very extensive in the material it covers and is highly recommended for an advanced undergraduate student or as an introductory graduate text. By far the feature most appealing to me are the extensive images and cartoons used in this text, used quite effectively to elucidate even the most difficult of topics. This visual presentation style combined with the extensive and highly readble coverage of relevant material make this a must have for any serious student. The book is also updated frequently I believe a new edition is on the way slated to be publsihed in April 2004.

The Most Practical Anatomy Book
I agreed with the comments of a previous reviewer that most anatomy books tend to be overwhelming tomes that provide little understanding to those who want to apply it to their movement discipline. As a professional martial artist, I have found that this book is by far the most practical book on anatomy I have ever read. Blandine Germain clearly explains "the how" of body movement and the relevant tissue, tendons and range of motion. It is an excellent roadmap for troubleshooting inefficient movement whether you are a bodyworker, athlete, dancer, or martial artist.

Easy to understand and very helpful
As a student of yoga and dance, I've been looking for an anatomy book to help me understand what's involved in movement. Unfortunately, most of the books I found were encyclopedic reference tomes that overwhelmed me with information. So I was delighted to run across this one: because its specific focus is movement, the drawings and descriptions cover only the relevant anatomical details. It's easy to understand and clear without being simplistic. The organization of the book makes it easy to find the information you want. And it doesn't just show joints and muscles; other relevant body parts are illustrated so the reader comprehends how everything works together (I never understood what the diaphragm really looks like until I saw this book!). This is a book that belongs in everyone's library -- it's not just for dancers or bodyworkers.

Excellent review of ... ligaments!
In all of my materials as a massage therapist, none of them covered ligaments functions, names and locations as well as this one! Beautiful illustrations and it's a book that makes you get up and move every few minutes as you're reading!

Excellent introduction to anatomy and kinesiology
As other reviewers have said, this is an excellent introduction to anatomy and kinesiology. The book strikes the perfect balance between clinical detail and practical knowledge for body-workers, athletes and dancers. We have copies of several pages up on the wall at my Pilates studio which get referred to often.

All the major skeletal muscle groups of the limbs and torso are covered. It is not a disection manual. It is organized for students of movement. Of particular value is the section on the work of the psoas and the "psoas paradox" that is somewhat controversial.

To get more in depth, one text I can recommend for the dancer/Pilates instructor is "Dance Kinesiology" by Sally Sevey Fitt.

Great for students of massage and bodywork
This is a must book for students of massage of bodywork. It is written in a clear and descriptive way that takes the boredom out of anatomy. This gives knowledge on the kinesiology of the body in a simple manner. I also would advise to buy the following which is also sold on amazon.com:

Birds in Brazil
Birds in Brazil is a big book, beautifully produced on quality paper. It is exhaustive but never exhausting on the topic of Brazilian birds . The color illustrations are beautiful, but unfortunately they are separate from the text about the birds. That is the book's only fault. The text is in smooth and enticing English, and where the same birds are to be found migrating to the United States, the information is quite comparable in completion and interest to the American field guides of Roger T. Peterson. That leads me to believe that the information about birds that we don't experience will be equally accurate. This book is captivating and well worth the price. Good Book
This is a good book for college anatomy and physiology. It is very thorough and descriptive. Goes in depth into nervous, muscular, skeletal and endocrine systems to name a few. Excruciatingly detailed and esoteric at times
This book is a decent text; however, I found it to be excruciatingly detailed at times and also quite a bit esoteric. The book goes in to so much detail, that it is usually hard to find a suitable and understandable explanation for basic concepts. It is better, probably, for higher level biology classes.

Amazingly good book on cell biology and chemistry.

A great introductory biochemistry text!
Filled to the brim with useful, concise information, and helpful explanations. It also has very complete coverage of a broad variety of concepts and fields of study of biochemistry. While it can at times get bogged down in the details, it was extremely helpful to me during my biochemistry class, and inspired in me a desire to continue educating myself in the field. I am keeping this book rather than selling it, because I'm certain it will be of great use to me in my further studies in biology and medicine.

I had this for my textbook in Biology back in 1987 and even then, .... well before the human genome was anywhere near being charted, let alone completed, this was a spectacular acomplishment. This book isn't riveting like say Druyan and Sagan's SHADOWS OF FORGOTTEN ANCESOTRS is, but it is as good as any biology textbook can possibly be. It has EVERYTHING you could possibly want to know about biology; from modern cell theory to ecology. All you have to do is look this over and you'll see why I highly recommend it. Does any other bio textbook even compare?

This is by far the finest Introductory Biology textbook I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Biology teachers, do yourselves (not to mention your students) a favor--make this the required text for your Biology I (and II) Class! Best intro to Bio book out there
This is definitely the best intro to bio books out there. As a graduate student I got the chance to read lots of bio books and this one by far is the best. The chapters are well organized and easy to follow and gives you the depth needed to pursue any area of biology. When it was time for me to student teach this was the book of my chose. It expensive but definiely worth it to any biologist. The CD-ROM is also very good!

Outstanding introductoy text
"Biology" by Raven and Johnson is an impressive introduction into the biological sciences for undergraduates and Advanced Placement high school students. This text is particularly strong on evolution, sociobiology, ethology, and genetics, and does an outstanding job of presenting evolutionary theory as the unifying theme of all the biological sciences. Hard to put down!

Good book better CD-ROM
Although the material in this book is challenging, it throughly explains the material at hand. The CD-ROM is very useful and explained the material in simple terms.

doesn't get any worse
Worst bio book I have ever read (i have read about 9 different bio books). I am one of those people who never write reviews on books--I usually am the reader. This book was so bad that I actually felt obligated to to write about it so i may warn others (beleive me, I am pretty lazy). The book tries to get you to enjoy the old and cutting edge research behind all scientific data. Big emphasis on the word TRIES. It fails at accomplishing this task. The main task of a biology book is to teach you biology. Unlike most books, Biological Science's goal is to make people enjoy biology and the research behind it. People who already have somewhat of an interest in biology should turn away from this book because it fails in letting the reader discover on his/her OWN that biolgy is an exciting and an enjoyable field to study. Instead the book tries to accomplish this task for you which is its greatest mistake. To add to the trouble, the book has terrible organization (mainly when making points within each chapter). In trying to show all the cutting edge technology and important points in a fashionable way, it makes itself dizzy--it jumps from one point to the next. I would continue about the faults of Biologial Science but I am tired and hungry and I don't hate this book enough to keep writing more about it (pretty sad huh...?). So take my advice and talk to your professor about changing this book if you find out that you have to read it--chances are that won't happen but best of luck in your efforts.

Great book Great CD rom
I think this text is very well done. The writing is clear and the examples and graphics are very useful. The CD rom, although it does need some massaging to work (requires Netscape 4 or 5, and shockwave I forget which), the necessary programs are included on the CD. Once it's up and running, it's great! The tutorials and activities are very useful in clarifying the information- it even shows a movie of Mitosis and Meiosis happening side by side, to illustrate the similarities and differences- something which otherwise is difficult to envision and comprehend at the intro level. The web resources that also come with this book are very useful. The CD rom is repeated there (so you don't have to "downgrade" your software), plus it has quite a bit of extra material.

I would use this text if I were teaching an college, or even high school, intro bio course.

good book? maybe. useless cd-rom? DEFINITELY.
So far I'd had no quarrels with the quality of the Freeman book, but then, upon recommendation of my professor, I tried to install the cd.

Granted, I'm a little miffed, but I wanted to bring to your attention how phenomenally useless this product is. Now, I hear the content of the cd is really helpful, and I hope it is, but when a textbook is updated every two years, a consumer ought not to have to downgrade her computer in order for an enclosed (and supposedly updated) piece of software to work. Such trouble either renders the CD-ROM useless or a royal pain in the @$$.

Let me explain: The cd works with no web browser but Netscape. Not only that, but it works with no Netscape other than Netscape 4 or 5. (Your computer probably has Netscape 6 or higher.) The cd also requires Shockwave 8.50 and will use NOTHING ELSE.

The installation software for these very specific needs are included on the cd, however, you'll have to scrap your previous (and probably newer) Shockwave.

So, if you don't mind the hassle, or luck out and have Netscape 4.7 and Shockwave 8.50, by all means, let us know how you like it. I, for one, will be living the experience vicariously. ... Read more

Outstanding Coverage of The Topic
I purchased this book with the intention on self education rather than for a course. I have found this book to be nothing short of outstanding. There is a lot of good information and it is easy for a beginner to pick it up and understand the content. The layout is very user friendly and the pictures actually make it rather enjoyable to learn.

There are many different tools that the book utilizes. There are cadaver photos, photomicrographs, histology-based art, orientation diagrams, concept statements, and other overview portions to make learning different and unique. I really enjoyed how there is lifetime development, aging, and exercise notes beside many areas to help the reader get a more complete understanding of the subject. The CD can act as a study guide. It contains about 30 questions for each chapter to make self review that much easier.

I have been looking for an anatomy and physiology text that is basic, because my foundation is limited, but also complete. I believe I have found that with this book. I actually enjoy where the anatomy is blended with the physiology. I don't know if this would be appropriate for a course, because I've never taken one and don't know the standardm but for self learning this is of the best that I have seen.

I'd highly recommend this text to those who are new to this field of study because of its easiness to use and completeness of information. I've seen some others that do have more information but are more difficult for a novice to use.

good for anatomy, but go elsewhere for physiology
As a medical student, a good anatomy and physiology text book is key to my education. At the start of 1st year, when I knew little about the subject, this book was great as it explained everything well with nice diagrams.

However, there are two main disadvantages of this book:
1. Anatomy, physiology, histology, cell biology, biochemistry, pathology are all found mixed together in this book. While some people like this, i think it just makes it more difficult to learn as you are never sure where one topic ends and the other begins.

2. Although good at the start of first year, I quickly found that this book didnt offer nearly enough detail needed for a degree course - especially about physiology, biochemistry etc.

There is a third disadvantage, in that this book was actually taken off our reading list because apparently there are some mistakes in the physiology sections (not many, only one or two, but our university felt that it couldnt recommend it to us as a text any longer).

This is a good anatomy book, but go elsewhere for other subjects.

Great book, bad seller
As a medical student I am always looking for a fair deal on textbooks so I turned to amazon. I found Tortora's A&P text from Kinson Hung, a third party seller through amazon, for $30 less than our bookstore. What I did not know was that the book was shipped from the UK and marked not for sale in the US. The book arrived damaged and it cost me $35 to return the book to England, which is where the package said to return the book if necessary. After inquiring about reimbursement for shipping the seller was only willing to cover $5 of the $35 after several email disputes. I purchased the book from our bookstore because my A&P class began and it cost me $35 extra for a valuable lesson that I felt obligated to share. While I would purchase new books again from amazon, I will never purchase from third party sellers and will be sure to share my costly experience with each of my colleagues. It is unfortunate that some sellers such as Kinson Hung give others a bad name. In this day of impersonal internet stores; buyers beware.

Excellent Anatomy and Physio text
For a new student of anatomy and physiology, this text is incredible. It's got a wealth of material, is easy to use and understand (without being simplistic), and does an excellent job integrating the principles of physiology in with the basic anatomy. It even has some small clinical asides that are both interesting and relevant. I used this book for all of my undergrad work, and have kept it as a valuable reference for my med school anatomy. I also picked up and use a copy of Moore's "Clinically Oriented Anatomy", which is also excellent, yet much more advanced/detailed....for a quick reference I find that I always check Tortora/Grabowski first, and go to a deeper text only if what I need isn't covered in sufficient depth, which rarely happens. This is an outstanding textbook for A&P.

book is thorough and explains all aspects there. it contains a glossary and new terminology is explained after every part of body and system exploration.
the attached atlas - shows all parts of the skeleton. it is handy - you can drag it with you anywhere while studying for exams. atlas has also references to book. shame it has only the skeleton and all body systems.
the book has two cd-roms attached - one in fron cover - let's you prepare sample exams in order to prepare you to passing the exams.
the other cd-rom - is the foundations - first cd in a series of some. book contains only the first - the foundations part. it has animation, pivtures and interactive explanations and also a glossary part. so you can postpon buying a dictionary for the beginning until you have some knowledge and know what dictionary will be best for you.
all in all - excelent package for an affordable price.
