5-0 out of 5 stars Authoritative
Authoritative guide on how to write. I have never seen a more comprehensive book on how to write clearly and write well. I would give it 6 stars if I could. Even non-scientists should read this. (Having said that, though, scientists IN PARTICULAR should read this - hint, hint.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great methods for improving your medical writing
Mimi Zeiger has written a truly useful book about medical writing. Many specialized writing books are just collections of general writing rules in disguise.

This books focuses on mechanics and methods of writing specifically for the medical sciences. Full of hands-on techniques, methods, and exercises geared to analyzing and improving your writing.

I'm an experienced technical writer yet still found this book quite useful.
Five stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book - Best of its kind.
This is an exceptional book. It walks the reader through all stages of writing a biomedical paper, and exemplifies the saying that "clear writing means clear thinking". Even after having written or co-written perhaps 40 biomedical papers and grants, I found this book an eye-opener. I've worked with some excellent writers and re-writers on biomed papers, but Zeiger's book lays out for all of us what some top writers may do by instinct. She starts with word choice, sentence structure, then alternative paragraph structures. She practically shows you the nature of language and thought. She goes through the right way to produce biomed papers - if you ever thought the great, efficient writers had a rule book -you- never got, THIS is the rule book. If you ever had an introduction that sounded like the abstract, or a results sections that was unwieldy, or a discussion section that seemed to repeat the introduction - Zeiger lays out the hidden rules that most people would want to follow. Following her rules, from sentence to paragraph to section, creates a paper that invokes an instinctive sense of clarity in the reader. Many times I had the "Aha!" feeling. The book should be very useful for all kinds of clear writing, including research grants. I never took one of those "scientific writing" classes because I felt smart and fluent and the classes seemed pedestrian. If those classes had used this book, I would have been way ahead to have discovered this information twenty years ago. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fairly up to date and great teaching tool
As you can imagine, no text book is a must read, but it certainly is a must own for any student of cell biology or biological scientists, from undergraduate, graduate, medical student, to the graduated faculty member. A useful text with great figures and an excellent accompanying CD.

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs Improvement
I agree with an earlier reviewer that the book is a good reference and the overwhelming details contained in it make it difficult to get the basic fundamentals. The authors need to trim it down and focus more on fundamental principles. I feel at times the book is somewhat convoluted and hard to follow. This is sometimes the case with books that have multiple authors.

Another reviewer pointed out the over abundance of yeast molecular biology contained in he book. I again agree with this person. I realize yeast is where we learned a lot about eukaryotic molecular biology. But I wish the book focused less on yeast and more mammalian cell biology. People using this book are likely to be looking at careers in biomedical research or medicine. I think more mammalian biology would be more beneficial.

Why do all these textbooks have to have a CD to run the price of the book up ?

2-0 out of 5 stars Too many authors undermine coherence
This text is excellent in the coverage of its subject matter, but, like typical texts and journal articles written by a myriad of authors, it lacks coherence. Thus, separating the wheat from the chaff is tedious. The book, if well written, could be much shorter and more readable than it currently is.

1-0 out of 5 stars Scicchitano undermines Lodish's brilliance
I have read snippets of this book as Scicchitano was my professor of molecular cell biology at NYU, therefore I'm naturally curious. He was quite well-spoken about the basics behind the subject - even, at times, verbose - yet he elevated that lucid core knowledge of the subject to such a great pomp that I cannot dissociate my experience of his fluff from this publication. Forgive me Harvey Lodish, but you would have done better not to collaberate with him, and you did do better by indeed discluding him from your molecular cell biology textbooks. (In class, David's jealousy at Dr. Lodish's superior intellect was obvious, as he took time out of every class to slam Lodish's molec cell 4th edition)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book gave me a real appreciation for cell biology! I love the figures and micrographs. I've had to read a lot of other books and this is hands-down my favorite bio book yet. ... Read more

Book Description

The splendor and beauty of a child’s growth and development in the womb--seen through unforgettable images made possible by revolutionary advances in visualization technology

What’s happening with the baby now?
All expectant parents ask this question throughout the exhilirating months of pregnancy.Fuzzy sonograms and doctor’s explanations can provide basic information, but through Alexander Tsiaras’ remarkable achievements in medical imaging technology, parents can see, for the first time, the awe-inspiring process of a new life unfolding, in stunning, vivid detail.

The milestones of pregnancy which before could only be described can now be witnessed:the heart’s first beats; the appearance of color in the eye; the emergence of toes and teeth; the brain and nervous system directing development; the first movement of tiny legs and arms; the first indications of gender; the wondrous symbiosis of mother and child; the symphony of the body’s systems coming into being and working in concert. The book tracks the development of a baby from the moment of conception, through the explosively complex early stages of development and the amazing stages of growth as the baby is nurtured by the mother, ending with the joy of birth.

All this is made possible by revolutions in two sciences. As biologists have decoded the molecular basis of life, computer scientists have developed non-invasive, three-dimensional techniques for visualizing the body.Alexander Tsiaras has been a pioneer in merging these explorations and discoveries. He has created a virtual camera studio that enables him to view a human body or any part of it individually, scan it, enlarge it, rotate it, adjust its transparency so that we can view inside a living being, and light it from any angle. The result is an ability to illuminate the unseen elements that make us who we are, and the miraculous images in From Conception to Birth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Stunning
I just wanted to write my own review and say how absolutely amazing this book really is. It's not so scientific that it bored me nor is it just pictures- it's the perfect mix of information and pictures.
It clearly states that most of the pictures are not actual photographs, but a mix of pictures and art. Some of the reviewers are so bothered by this. I don't think the author is trying to trick anyone into thinking that these are actual photographs. The author is simply trying to let the reader better visualize the amazing process that occurs in a mothers' womb. Since it's almost impossible to get actual pictures of a fetus, this is the closest that we can get. They are still amazing picures. I look through it everyday and it makes me appreciate even more the miracle of birth and life. This is a must have book for all expecting mothers. It can also make a perfect gift for a mother-to-be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing
After reading the article in Time Magazine, I purchased 'From Conception To Birth' for a friend of mine who'd just had a child. After flipping through the book, I bought a second copy for myself. It's truly an Awesome work. The pictures are mesmerizing. And, you don't have to have children to enjoy it. This is all of our story. How can anyone with two eyes and a heart not be moved by these incredible images.I really recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful coffee table book
If you are looking for a shower gift for an expectant couple, this would make a lovely gift. It's full of photos of the developing baby. It would also make a wonderful gift for a very excited set of grandparents! My husband and I had a copy of this book during my pregnancy and enjoyed it thoroughly. The writing is beautiful and the photos are amazing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs Up from a veteren mom
I am reviewing from a "hands on" opinion. I have gone through this process four times and I am currently beginning the journey of bringing a 5th child into the world.

I think this book is beautiful. I first saw it on Oprah, where everyone was raving about it. I had to go to the book store and take a peek. The pictures are beautiful. The book is somewhat similar to A Child Is Born, but each book offers its own unique stand point.

Since my first encounter with this book, I have seen it in OB/GYN waiting rooms. I even saw a copy in our hospital waiting room. I have read various good reviews. (even from PHD doctors) Regardless of the rave from doctors and the media, I found it to be quite impressive on my own. Life is one of the most amazing things. To see it visually, is just a marvel. I am so happy to see such detailed books on this beautiful process. I can't believe all that stuff goes on inside of me!!!

It's worth a look!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awe-inspiring book!
Pregnant couples will love this book, there are sections of the book that show exactly how big the baby is and what it looks like at different stages of development. I found myself referring to this book almost every day while I was pregnant. This is an excellent book to share with children. I also found the text fascinating. This book is not as in-depth as the book "A Child is Born", which is the classic "from-conception-to-birth" book. Though I prefer this book for it's format and because it is less graphic. I would recommend this book for anyone curious about the birth process and definately for anyone expecting a child. ... Read more

Book Description

Jeffrey Glassberg's acclaimed Butterflies through Binoculars guides have revolutionized the way we view butterflies. Now there's a field guide in the same practical format, and with the same emphasis on conservation, to identify caterpillars. Caterpillars are as varied, fascinating, and often as colorful as the adult butterflies they become. This is the most comprehensive guide to these creatures available. It contains all the information necessary to find and identify the caterpillars of North America--from Two-tailed Swallowtails, some of the largest butterfly caterpillars at just over two inches when fully grown, to tiny Western Pygmy-Blues. Caterpillar seekers will learn how to distinguish between butterfly caterpillars and moth caterpillars, where and how to find caterpillars, and the visual differences between young and older caterpillars. Each species section describes how to identify the caterpillar, complete with brilliant photos--many published here for the first time. To make for easy field use, each caterpillar's key physical features, abundance, habitat, and major hostplants are listed on the same page as its photo. The book also contains a special section on butterfly gardening, offering valuable information on how to set up a butterfly garden and raise healthy butterfly caterpillars, and provides a thorough list of the plants butterflies most like to feast on. From the concerned gardener who wishes not to kill caterpillars that may one day become beautiful butterflies to the serious butterflier wishing to take the hobby to the next level, this remarkable guide will provide all of the information necessary for an enriching caterpillar experience. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for test review, etc
My AP Biology course uses Campbell's Biology as its main text. I ordered the study guide to help me study for tests. When I do the reading, I use this study guide to read the short summary, then read the section in the book. So far, this strategy has been very effective. In addition, the multiple choice study questions at the end of each chapter is very helpful. This book presents the information in a very organized, logical, and concise way. I would recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this guide
I used this book to help study for a very fast paced class at the University of Minnesota. I improved my grade from about 70% on the first exam, to over 90% on the second and about 95% on the final by using the book.

The text is simply too filled with information. I found it difficult to know what to focus on in my studying. And there are just too few sample questions in the back.

The study guide provides worksheet style exercizes to focus the student.

I think would be especially helpful for courses where they use a "test bank of questions to generate the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars University High School @ Irvine CA!
Very Good Book. Recommended by Mr. Knight.

A very very very good book. I personally enjoyed this book so much that I was never able to stop reading this book. Reading one chapter only takes you about 10 minutes if you are an avid Biology student like me. It's impossible to not get a 5 on the AP exam if you studied with this book + textbook + review book + Mr. Knight's notes + thoughts + advices + discussion + reviews + essays + AP CD + practice AP exams + studying 3 hours a day for bio + tutor. Easy, huh? But it really is possible; I got a 5!

Book Description

Cecie Starr is the most successful author in non-majors biology because of her clear and engaging writing, trend-setting art, and unparalleled student and instructor media. Now in her brief NEW text, Starr creates in fewer than 600 pages a friendly, issues-oriented book with enormous instructional power. Integrating visuals from the book and accompanying media, Starr supports student mastery throughout and encourages students to make judgments about biology-related issues just as they will as citizens, voters, parents, employees, and consumers. The pedagogical focal points of each chapter are "Read Me First!" diagrams that introduce concepts before students read the longer text discussions. These visual previews, featuring annotated art presented in clearly numbered steps, make the subsequent text discussions more accessible. To solidify understanding, a narrated animation of each diagram appears on the free Student CD-ROM. "The Big Picture" on every chapter-opening page is a visual overview of the chapter's key concepts and is enhanced by a fully narrated, "mini-lecture" movie on the CD-ROM.The free Student CD-ROM provides access to BiologyNow, a powerful diagnostic learning tool that helps students assess their unique study needs through pretests and personalized learning plans. An "Impacts and Issues" opens each chapter focusing students on a key biology-related societal issue. Revisited throughout the chapter, this unfolding case study illustrates the chapter's biological concepts. Each chapter's "How Would You Vote?" feature asks students to consider biology-related news topics, gather and evaluate pro/con information, apply knowledge, then cast a vote on the Web. Students can see how peers in their state and across the nation voted. For additional facts and perspectives on each side of the issue, instructors can assign readings from the online Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simplifing A Complex Field Through A Consistent Approach
Having read the reviews thus far, I can't find anything I disagree with. It's the best technical text I've ever read. Many of the strengths have been mentioned already: intuitive approach, clear and concise, wide range of interesting illustrative examples, etc.

In addition, the consistent use and discussion of trajectories, phase space, stable points, etc. throughout the entire text allows the reader to incrementally build from each previous lesson. Though other books on nonlinear dynamics use these same tools, the vivid explanations and repetitions with incremental differences greatly enhanced the comprehensibility of these topics. I especially appreciate these consistent methods applied to the consolidation of the material in this text after reading books and papers from various authors using different jargon and methods of illustrating the same concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect introduction to Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos
If you have read about Chaos and Nonlinear Dynamics and you wish to delve deeper into the mathematics behind the theories then this is the book for you. Strogatz is an excellent writer with an uncanny ability to make advanced concepts seem amazingly simple. The exercises and examples make this book perfect for the motivated self-learner. I must warn you however that you had better be at least somewhat familiar with ODE before you dive into this text. I strongly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Chaos on a plate
Strogatz's approach to Nonlinear Dynamics is suitable for anyone equipped with a good basic understanding of ordinary differential equations. He allows the reader to gradually build-up their understanding through a series of illustrations and examples - this is the sort of book that will be indispensable the night before a final year undergraduate Chaos and Nonlinear Dynamics exam. Not excessively mathematical, contains solid explanations and encourages the reader to learn more about this fantastic area of physics.

5-0 out of 5 stars thanks to Dr. Strogatz!
It is an essential book for everybody who wants to learn nonlinear dynamics. It is writen by the master in the field in a very clear and understandable language.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book but...
This is a great book - clear explanations, lots of examples and exercises and helpful references and index. However, answers to selected exercises is really annoying - when will publishers insist on a full set of solutions?

Having programs to plot the figures in the book would have helped in understanding the material. If you want Mathematica programs - see Wolframs "The Mathematica Book". For Maple and MATLAB programs, see Lynch's Dynamical Systems books.

Strogatz's Sync book is a marvelous read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Precise
I am a dental student and at my school the Descriptive Anatomy course is infamously difficult. This book has made it much easier to conceptualize human anatomy in 3-dimension as well as demonstrate how each part relates to one another, by region and layer-by-layer. The cadavers have been dissected with superb precision, which provides clarity as to how all of the anatomical structures relate. The photographs are of excellent quality with nonintrusive lines and numbers to easily identify each anatomical part. You get a realistic experience of human anatomy in its true physical form and spatial dimension. This is an excellent book for those who are visual learners as well as those who desire a deeper understanding of human anatomy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Atlas
Rohen provides crystal clear pictures of the human body. This is a must have book to help you get through anatomy and for later reference throughout your medical career! It is particularly helpful for anatomy students because it illustrates precise dissections that can be reviewed on those days/nights when you don't want be in the pungent lab.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is AWESOME
I can not believe the quality of this books or the photos it is full of. I will start medical school next fall and wanted to start learning human anatomy and preparing myself for gross anatomy lab. This book is a great resource and exactly what I was looking for, plus it is used at my school for the MSI lab so I will use it during school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Best Book for Anatomy
I'm a medical student at the University of Michigan and in my experience this is the best atlas for anatomy. Many of the pictures are taken and arranged just like a typical anatomy dissection, which is perfect for pre-labbing and for studying for practicals. The labels are numbered, which make it ideal for self-quizzing, and the pointers aren't extremely long, which makes it easy to see what is being pointed at. (This is a problem with Netter's which has extremely long lines that are hard to follow.) I do not usually use textbooks (I rely mostly on class notes and online resources), but this atlas has been invaluable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Condition!
I received this book tonight and it looks just amazing!
It is in excellent condition and thus motivates me to open it and want to read it. I am sure I will enjoy it:)

Jared Diamond states the theme of his book up-front: "How the human species changed, within a short time, from just another species of big mammal to a world conqueror; and how we acquired the capacity to reverse all that progress overnight." The Third Chimpanzee is, in many ways, a prequel to Diamond's prize-winning Guns, Germs, and Steel. While Guns examines "the fates of human societies," this work surveys the longer sweep of human evolution, from our origin as just another chimpanzee a few million years ago. Diamond writes:

It's obvious that humans are unlike all animals. It's also obvious that we're a species of big mammal down to the minutest details of our anatomy and our molecules. That contradiction is the most fascinating feature of the human species.

The chapters in The Third Chimpanzee on the oddities of human reproductive biology were later expanded in Why Is Sex Fun? Here, they're linked to Diamond's views of human psychology and history.

Diamond is officially a physiologist at UCLA medical school, but he's also one of the best birdwatchers in the world. The current scientific consensus that "primitive" humans created ecological catastrophes in the Pacific islands, Australia, and the New World owes a great deal to his fieldwork and insight. In Diamond's view, the current global ecological crisis isn't due to modern technology per se, but to basic weaknesses in human nature. But, he says, "I'm cautiously optimistic. If we will learn from our past that I have traced, our own future may yet prove brighter than that of the other two chimpanzees."--Mary Ellen Curtin ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating and important book...
After trying to read _Guns, Germs, and Steel_, I found this book, surprisingly, easier to get interested in and understand. Not that it's simpler or dumbed-down!

The book tries to answer the questions of what it means to be human, and how we are different from other life forms. This might sound like a cliché, but as Diamond delves into ethics, sex, history, evolution, and drug abuse, and comes out with his grim but guardedly optimistic conclusions, it seems apparent to me, at least, that what he is saying is of utmost importance to everyone in the world.

Having read the book _Ishmael_, by Daniel Quinn, a few years ago, I wonder if Diamond's thinking could actually be improved by being combined with Quinn's. Diamond suggests that, when prehistoric societies drove certain animals to extinction, they were acting out a human tendency to be destructive to our local environments that is simply horribly intensified today. Quinn suggests that some of those prehistoric societies were not particularly more destructive than other animals, and for the same reasons; while other, more civilized societies had the tendency to be destructive because of their cultures' inclinations, and passed this tendency on to us, their cultural descendants.

Of course, if Quinn is correct, our culture must be changed, a daunting task; while if Diamond is correct, the solution is unclear. He suggests that we may in fact be learning to change our behavior, in our own self-interest. I don't see much evidence of this offhand. (Although recent books by Paul Hawken and Ray C. Anderson suggest that business can be reformed in a way that's good both economically and ecologically; they're next on my reading list!) Quinn and Diamond alike offer a very cautious hope for our ecological future: that we may learn from the errors of the past and change our behavior accordingly.

But how easy it is to sit and type platitudes about the fate of all human life! Read the book; I'm going to reread it myself, in order to thoroughly take in its meaning. If anyone is interested in discussing these topics, please email me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Captivating Work
I read this book just after I finished GGS and at some aspects, I liked it even more than the much celebrated GGS.

At each chapter of the Third Chimpanzee we learn a totally new subject in the Jared Diamond style: a well-thought synthesis, a simple and organized presentation. Every other twenty pages was a new adventure for me.

Obviously, this might not be the case for other readers that are more acquainted with evolution readings, and obviously I need a lot to learn before I can decide their authenticity but I found his ideas on subjects like extraterrestrial life and evolution of drug abuse very original and provoking. I also found his narration of the issues of Indo-European Languages spreading, mate selection, animal art and genocide very moving and comprehensive.

A surprise for me was that this book tells the main concept of GGS thoroughly in just two chapters. Given the occasionally criticized redundancy and large volume of GGS, I might humbly suggest a prospective reader of Diamond who has limited time to read this book instead of GGS. For sure, GGS gives a much better and extensive treatise of the concept and it is also a must read book for anybody who wants to put a perspective to human history. Third Chimpanzee also gives a perspective to human psychology and I sincerely recommend it to anybody interested in these two subjects.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking
This is a very worthwhile read for anyone interested in how man differs and does not differ from the rest of the animal kingdom (particularly the great apes). Since the book is already over ten years old, it is a bit weak on new advances in genetics and does not seem to be up-to-date on the Clovis debate about the peopling of the Americas (new genetic data showing that the entrance was probably earlier than the assumed 12,000 years ago). However, the bulk of the book is a very mind-broadening, timeless view of homo sapiens and this species conquest of the entire planet. The history that Diamond portrays does not augur well for mankind: habitual destruction of the environment; mass extinctions of other species; increasingly limited genetic diversity in the human species; the propensity for genocide. In short, Diamond shows that man has a history of selfishly expanding its population to the detriment of the very environment upon which he depends and that this proclivity could someday spell the end of the species as our numbers continue to rise. Some sobering facts are offered here; and open minds should recognize them and heed them.

I only give the book four stars for two reasons:
1) As mentioned, the part on genetics is partially out of date and should be made current in a further edition.
2) Diamond has a number of annoying tendencies that are sometimes frustrating: I grew weary of his "Outer Space" perspectives (i.e., the paleontologist from Outer Space, the archaeologist from Outer Space, the biologist from Outer Space), as if the reader were incapable of standing back and gaining perspective on his own species without this trick. Also, he piqued my curiosity on a number of subjects that he promised to cover in detail later. When thse subjects finally came, there were often more questions than answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely FASCINATING!!!
Jared Diamond has to be one of my favorite authors. I could hardly put this book down! After reading "Guns, Germs and Steel," and "Why is Sex Fun?", "The Third Chimpanzee" has also proven to be yet another brilliant work by the author. He asks questions and looks at angles that are fascinating and provide almost endless food-for-thought. He approaches his subjects with open-mindedness and a true desire to uncover the truth.
Human evolution and early human history is a mysterious subject with much of the pieces missing, simply because of how long ago it happened and the lifestyle of those early humans. Yet it is such an important subject-- to understand WHAT homo sapiens really are, how we fit in with the other members of our family tree, how we got to be the way we are. Mr. Diamond applies his experience with hunter-gatherer New Guinian peoples to try to fill in these gaping holes. For thousands of years, all humans lived as hunter-gatherers, yet today it is a lifestyle that is becoming increasingly rare. He also provides insight into our physical evolution, sexual and reproductive evolution, the evolution of language and communication, and how our closest current relatives --the chimps and gorillas-- differ from and are similar to us. He also discusses what he terms "our Great Leap Forward"-- the point were we stopped being pre-human and started being (mentally and behaviorly) modern.
If you are at all interested in early human history and the "whys" and "hows" of many of our "human" characteristics, then this book is for you. You'll find Mr. Diamond's open, honest approach refreshing and easy to follow. Excellent book on understanding what it means to be human, and how we got that way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best immunology book!
This is the best immunology book out there for the aspiring medical student. Well written, easy read, concise. During the first years of medical school you need sources that deliver information in a quick, organized manner and this book delivers! Don't think about any other immunology textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read textbook
I borrowed this book from a prof who was reviewing it for the next time he taught immunology. I used it to gear myself up for two presentations and papers in biochem and cell/molecular biology. Having no experience in immunology but a solid backgroudn in biochem and biology, I found it incredibly easy to read, yet has all the details and mechanisms necessary for one to read and understand research papers in immunology. The picture and graphics are fantastic. It is concise without skipping so much detail as to lose the reader. I wish all my textbooks were written this well. It ties in material from biochemisty and cell biology as well as genetics. It would be a wonderful text for an upper level undergraduate immunology course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than most immunology textbooks
Excellent text that includes the most current information on a subject that is constantly evolving. More easy to read than most immunology texts. Good reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good study guide.
I found this book to be a good study guide in the following ways:
It helped me to learn hard topics of anatomy and physiology in an easier way. The visual learning aids stayed in my head more. This is a much easier way of learning A and P then listening to long and dry college lectures. I also used the following study guides which are also on amazon:
Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
These study guides had the type of questions I encountered on my college A and P test. I advise getting these books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Newer version
This book is good but there is a newer version already out which is better. If you have the Lab manual that goes with the text, this doesn't really offer anything new to you and your money would be better spent on the resource book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book - information overload
This is a very useful reference to have if you work extensively on HPLC. I find its of more use to understand concepts ...there is a lot of information here.

Which means - if you are looking for a solution to a problem and you want to research separation theory - a great book.

If your looking for a quick fix to an HPLC problem - not as good. This is a detailed, extensive and well written text on HPLC Method development - wish there was more on validation here though.

5-0 out of 5 stars What is a Pathology intern?
Practical, helpful, useful book. An excellent, wise choice; you won't be disappointed.
I'm a bit puzzled by a phrase in the previous reviewer's review, however: What is a pathology intern?
As someone who did a year of internal medicine (that is, an internship) before going on to pathology residency, and who now works with pathology residents, I'd like to point out that, as far as I can tell, there is no comparison between the first year in internal medicine, or surgery, or pediatrics (that is, the internship), and the first year of pathology training (called simply the first year of residency).
My internship year was the first year that the term "internship" was officially supposed to be NOT used; rather, we were to be referred to as "first-postgraduate-year" or "level I" residents, or something like that.
Typical foolishness from folks with too much free time.
Guess what: we were still referred to as; were still treated as; still referred to ourselves as; and still worked the ridiculously, unreasonably, brutally long hours of: ...interns.
Anyway, a great book - buy it, and use it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great choice for the Pathology intern
If you are a pathology intern or resident, this book was written just for you. How many of us graduate from medical school and remember basic histology? My guess would be few to none. The book is organized into sections based on organ systems and further subdivided into chapters on specific organs within those systems. It provides a "refresher" about the embryology and gross appearance of a particular organ before launching into the histology, and most people could probably use the review. The color pictures are excellent, and, in my opinion, a MUST for any book detailing histology; black and white photos just don't help me very much at this early stage in my career because they don't convey the details the way color photos do.

My only complaint is that the book has no photos that display the tissues as we actually see them in surgical pathology. For example, when I look at pictures of the histology of the colon, I would like to see a few shots of biopsied tissue rather than tissue that has been nicely sectioned from a colectomy specimen. Often, the tissue received for histology review is just a small fragment that is frequently missing some layers or may be crushed in areas, and it would be beneficial to see photos of the histologic appearance of these tissue fragments. That being said, the book is sometimes helpful in its written descriptions of artifact that may occur during tissue processing, and there are a few photos to go along with these descriptions. Perhaps I'm a little greedy in my desire for more photos, but someone once said that a picture is worth a thousand words!

Don't buy this book to learn pathology; buy it to learn normal histology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too expensive, too voluminous, a bit boring, not great.
It is not easy to write a good histology book. Most histologists are not pathologists, and do not know a bit about real histology. These guys are M.D.'s, but because there many of them, the book is not a great success. E.g. there is no Toker cell, try to find a Merkel cell (not in the index, present in text).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text for path residents
One of the most difficult parts of starting a path residency is knowing what is normal. This book is perfect as a review book and also during the residency.
I have reffered to it many times and feel it is an indispensible part of a pathologists library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Indespensible when you need a comprehensive histology source
This is a well organized text/atlas of histology that includes a modicum of histopathology as well. In my experience as a PGY-3 pathology resident, I don't refer to it very often, but when I do I find it to be indespensible. I have not come across any histology book that is quite so comprehensive. In addition, it serves as a fairly good quality atlas. My only criticism is that I would have liked to see more charts and tables with regard to immunohistochemistry and special stains. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Text
This is the most recent edition of a first rate textbook on the difficult topic of medical ethics. The authors' approach is neither to attempt to derive a set of guidelines from abstract moral theory nor to be completely empirical in the sense of simply assessing what clinicians and researchers do when dealing with moral issues. The approach of this book is to extract a series of important principles from the best aspects of practice and then to generalize these principles. The 4 basic principles set out by the authors are respect for autonomy, non-maleficience, beneficience, and justice. The book is divided into a series of well written and integrated chapters covering the basic rationale for the authors' approach, each of the principles, professional-patient relations, and concluding with a set of chapters covering basic moral theories and how the authors' approach fits in with moral theory and competing approaches.

This book has many virtues. The basic approach is strong and practical. Each principle and the exposition of each principle is embedded in real clinical moral problems. The authors make the interesting and important point that none of these principles have priority over another and that balances need to be sought between these principles. This book is simultaneously an excellent exposition of a strong approach to medical ethics and useful reference source to clarify thinking. The bibliography is excellent. Some of the chapters, notably the sections on autonomy and those on justice, are outstanding. The quality of writing is clear and the sections are distinguished by clarity of thought. The authors set themselves objective of writing a book that would combine a high level of rigor and would be useful, reaching a mixed audience of physicians, researchers, and others concerned with medical ethics. They have succeeded.

5-0 out of 5 stars You CAN Tell a Book by its Cover
Book Review PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL ETHICS Tom L. Beauchamnp and James F. Childress

"You can't tell a book by it's cover." Don't you believe it! Principles of Biomedical Ethics by Beauchamp and Childress is every bit as formidable as it's cover might suggest. That is not to say that the book is poorly written or inadequate in any way. It is just that this reviewer is a student, whose professor, at the end of the course confessed to the class the the text was indeed a demanding work requiring proportional effort on the part of the student. Granting that, it was the best of several texts he had examined.

After setting the stage, in chapter one with a discussion of approaches to ethics, the authors, in chapter two, deliniate in detail, eight classical ethical theories, which form the foundation of the study. Through liberal use of examples, the authors reveal that all theories have both weaknesses as well as strengths and that to rely on one theory to the exclusion of others is indeed a hightly questionable approach to ethical decision making.

In the subsequent six chapters, the authors continue with a wealth of case studies, elaborate on the importance of autonomy, privacy and dangers of paternalism; they discuss the elements of nonmaleficence and beneficence as essential elements in the Hippocratic oath. Distictions are made between killing and letting die. Arguments are made for and against the use of medically administered nutrition and hydration. Balancing prima facie norms to provide treatment and for truth telling are examined and the extenuating circumstances when these seemingly basic tenets may not be appropriate are discussed.

The authors have not dodged the knotty problems of availability of organs for transplantation, rationing of scarce treatments and health care resources, costs of health care or the concepts or theories of justice as they relate to health care. The appendix consists of ten case histories. There is a abundance of footnotes at the end of each chapter sufficient to satisfy the most rigorous student.

This is not a book for the casual reader. But for someone desiring an in depth treatment of current issues in health care from the standpoint of the physician, chaplain or health care administrator, I recommend this book without reservation.

Book Description

Believe it or not, bees are one of the oldest species of domesticated animals. Archeologists have found evidence of beekeeping, or apiculture, in the Middle East dating back more than five thousand years. If you’ve ever tasted good clover honey, it’s not hard to understand why. But it’s not just for the honey that more than 125,000 people (and growing) in the United States, alone, keep hives. Anyone interested in nature can’t help but be fascinated by those buzzing yellow bundles of energy and the exotic world they inhabit, with all its weird rituals and incredible efficiency. Also, dedicated gardeners appreciate the extra bounty that pollinating bees bring to their fruits, flowers, and vegetable gardens.

In this easy-to-follow guide, Howland Blackiston, one of the nation’s most respected authorities on the subject, takes the mystery (and the sting) out of beekeeping. Taking a step-by-step approach to successful backyard beekeeping, he gets you up and running with all the information you need to:

  • Build a hive
  • Establish your first colony
  • Inspect your hives with confidence
  • Maintain healthy colonies
  • Deal with pests and fix common problems
  • Harvest and enjoy fresh homemade honey
  • Bottle and market your honey

Howland Blackiston covers all the bases, from bee anatomy, society, and behavior, to identifying and healing common illnesses afflicting bees. He also offers inventive solutions to most common and many uncommon problems you’re likely to run into. Among other things, you’ll discover:

  • Where to put your hive, basic equipment you’ll need, and how to assemble a hive
  • The best and safest way to inspect and enjoy your bees
  • Year-round tasks a beekeeper must perform to maintain a healthy colony
  • How to recognize and deal with common problems with brood production and the precious queen
  • How to harvest honey and decide what kind of honey you’d like to make
  • Making products from beeswax and propolis

For both fun and profit, beekeeping has become a booming enterprise. A real honey of a book, Beekeeping For Dummies gets you on the road to enjoying this ancient, highly-rewarding, and oh-so-tasty hobby. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good read for the new or beginning beekeeper
I would highly recommend this book to the new or beginning beekeeper. It is a very good read and is not nearly as dry or flowerly as several of the books out there on the subject. It does an excellent job of walking you thru the basics of setting up a bee hive and what to look for once your bee hive is populated. It lost a star in my veiw because it does not cover well everything that an experienced beekeeper needs to know and, if you are really a "dummy" beekeeping is not for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, Educational and Entertaining ....PERFECT!
I have been contimplating starting bees as a hobby. I ordered the book and couldn't put it down. The author shares his facination with bees and gives straight forward help on all the questions you have. He even addresses things like fear of bees and how to "sell" your neighbors. I loved it! I ordered a hive, equipment, and bees yesterday and I can't wait until they arrive.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for Dummies
Keep in mind this book has a "dummies" slant. It's a great beginner book and I own a copy. I recommend it. Lots of conversational plain english, funny cartoons, photographs, etc. But, buy another book as well to round out your knowledge. For example, Howland doesn't explain *why* you need an inner cover... just says it's part of the hive. He only provides *one* technique for queen introduction (a good one), when there are several others. Then he perpetuates the myth that you should scrape a bee's stinger away rather than pinch it away (Discover magazine, et. al., now dispute this), and when discussing *moving* a hive, he leaves out the "3 mile rule" and the "1 foot per day" approach, etc. He suggests using motor oil moats to prevent ants (works great), but doesn't mention that vegetable oil works great also, without being as noxious. Like I say, great book, buy it, but get some others too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best for Beginners
Being a complete dummie about Bees I was looking for the basics in a how-to book. I have not always been pleased with previous "For Dummies" books but this one is good. It is complete with advice for what you need to start, what is really necessary and what is optional, and how to decide. I am up and running with my bees and owe a lot to this book. When I went to the supplier I knew enough to make educated decisions on what to buy. I bought two other books and they were a waste of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Golden Start
A well-written practical book for the novice beekeeper and for those whishing to recheck their habits, good or bad. It is an easy book to read, the tips are practical, informed and work. I still have not yet found the courage to not use gloves! I would recommend this informative book to all who wish to enter the wonderful world of bee keeping. ... Read more
