5-0 out of 5 stars thank you
thank you for the fast delivery of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference
This book made medical microbiology much easier. I used this book for my medical microbiology class. It is easier to understand and it cut my study time because it was to the point. I also used the following:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (ISBN:0971999635)
The second book helped me prepare for the kind of questions on my medical microbiology tests. In fact, both these books helped me to get a 93 average in my medical microbiology class. I was recommended these two books from a friend of mine in another med school. He also got high grades on his medical microbiology exams.

1-0 out of 5 stars flash cards were disorganized and hard to read
Although others seemed to enjoy this method of learning, I found the cards disorganized and hard to use with repeated sections. I felt it was a waste of $. I still earned an A in Microbiology but found the "Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple" much more helpful. Best of luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars These flash cards are great
I'm a Microbiology Student and I use these cards every day. All the information you need to know about a certain microbe is listed on the back and a picture is on the front so you know how to identify the organism. Any nursing, nutrient, or medical student should purchase these cards - these cards will save you valued study time and you won't have to carry a heavy textbook with you - just pull out the cards you need to know and thats all you need - everything that I was tested (written or practical) was written on these cards.

5-0 out of 5 stars When you're taught by Dr. alcamo, you stay taught.
I was a student of the author 20 years ago and his clear, concise teaching method comes across in this text. If you can believe it, after all this time,"Micro" is still one of my favorite subjects. ... Read more

"[Practical Flow Cytometry, Fourth Edition] is one of the best textbooks for graduate students interested in biomedical sciences ... if you can only have one book on flow cytometry, this has to be the one." -- J. Paul Robinson, Ph.D., Professor of Immunopharmacology and Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive reference work on flow
This book is quite possibly the most comprehensive reference book on flow cytometry available. Every aspect of a modern cytometer is covered in depth, including the underlying physics and all their practical consequences to the functioning of the machine. 4-0 out of 5 stars A FINE VIROLOGY YARDSTICK
There is hardly any significant fact about viruses that missed-out in this edition of "Fields Virology". Page after page, this sound all-inclusive reference doles out authoritative information on both viruses and viral syndromes. From taxonomy to etiology, metamorphosis to replication; the analyses of this text is grand. The same applies to its attached CD-ROM. Its practical outlook was intended to benefit both microbiologists and pathologists. Bernard Fields and his colleagues made their mark with this book. It is a great effort.
However, most botanist may not be pleased to know that little attention was paid to plant viruses. Again, many potential buyers may be demoralized by the rather high price that this virology-set demands.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book and study it to get the 5.
Overall, this is the best AP summary book I have bought. The practice questions and practice exams are very close to what you see on the AP bio exam. In fact, two or three of the free response questions I saw on test day on the 2003 exam were in the Cliffs book in practically the exact form. This book is a great reference for future biology courses because it is concise and only includes the essentials. The pictures and diagrams are extremely useful. I will definitely continue to use this book even to study for the MCAT. I would go as far as to say you can easily get a 5 on the AP bio exam by studying from this book in place of taking a high school AP bio class. Overall a great purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book for the AP Biology Test
Cliff's AP Biology (2nd Edition) is comprehensive and informative--covering everything you will need for the AP test and for use throughout the year in your AP Biology class (it makes a great review before class tests!). I would highly recommend this book, as it helped me achieve a 5 on my AP Biology test this past year. The book includes:

~Detailed sections focusing on varying concepts with review questions after each section--very useful!

~Two complete practice tests at the end of the book to make sure you are thoroughly prepared for the AP test.

~Finally, the book covers the details regarding all 12 labs that may appear on the AP test.

During study sessions with my friends, who had Barron's, Princeton Review, or simply a text book to review from, we all agreed that Cliff's was a necessity; Barron's (6th Edition) was too detailed with obscure information, lacked "big picture concepts," and was ultimately frustrating with its typos and confusing diagrams. Princeton Review (2002-2003 Edition) lacked the information necessary for the AP test and missed important concepts.

In all, I highly recommend Cliff's AP Biology book for AP class tests and/or for the AP test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Review Book
I got a 4 on the AP Biology test, and it's thanks to this book that I didn't get a lower score. I was unfortunate enough to have a teacher that I really couldn't learn from, she would lecture on about one topic and never teach anything else. I turned to CliffsAP for help.

The book makes the information easy to understand, and contains a fair about of review questions (about 20 after each chapter). I'd bombed the mitosis/meosis test we took before I got this book, but when I was studying for the AP test I read their section on meosis and suddenly it all made sense. The book helped me to really understand and grasp the topics we needed to learn on the test. I'd definitely recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars IT'S A GREAT REVIEW BOOK
I've read some of the reviews that claim this book to be horrible. ok, the only reason why people even think that this book is "horrible" is because they expected this to be an in-depth detail textbook for the ap exam. first of all, this book was designed to prep you and to review concepts that you've already supposed to have been learning throughout the year. This book is not meant to give very specific details about how the Krebs cycle works or how photosynthesis specifically works. if that's what you want, go buy a Biology textbook. don't expect a biology ap prep book to give you all the details. A good way to prep for the Biology AP exam is to learn (that's right, LEARN, not memorize!!) the material and review it every month. Before the exam, read this book over at very good pace over a week. (don't be like me, i crammed everything in in 3 days and ended up not studying for my other ap exams..very bad consequence). if you still feel too shaky the morning of the exam, just quickly skim over the pages. i did that and got a 5 on the exam. and the essay parts, don't worry- they're a cinch if you write essays consistently for each chapter test. (my teacher made us do that). having a really good amazing teacher that really pounds this stuff into your head is a big plus for this test! Mrs. Carr rocks!

5-0 out of 5 stars AP Prep books are Prep books, not Text books
I took the Biology AP this year (freshman year). I'm sure it helped that I had a decent teacher and a very good text book (Biology Concept and Applications, Starr/5th Edition. Brooks/Cole Thompson Learning publisher, I have an extra copy if you'd like to buy it--diablodeloszorros@yahoo.com). My teacher went ahead and ordered the class the Princeton Review AP Bio book, but I decided to do a little research first before getting mine. While I was studying, all my friends were teasing me, haha you have a different prep book. Turned out most of them didn't get a 5, and I did. This book is relatively well written and simple enough to understand. It covers just enough detail so if you read over something, you will remember all that you need. It has study questions at the end of each section. There were two things that bothered me about this book: at the end of each section there isn't a list of terms you should remember, and there are only two practice tests (I think--I burned the book after the exam). However, I had access to many AP bio books (Kaplan, Princeton, the 5 steps to a 5 one, a few others), and looking through them, they didn't seem all that great. The practice tests help, so copy a few of those out or get your teacher to. Use this book to supplement your class if you want a 5. No AP Prep book is a text book, it is important to not only use this, but also your class notes etc... However, this is one of the better AP books available. Good luck. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not all good...
I agree with some of the comments of the other reviewers: the book seems comprehensive and is very attractively laid out. However I am attempting to read the book on my own, not as the textbook to a course, and I am finding that it is quite badly organized. For instance, the first chapter rushes through a whole lot of stuff which is presumably covered in more detail later in the book, but they don't really tell you that, nor do they simplify it as they should if it's just an overview. In later chapters, several terms are used without being defined, and often it's impossible to tell what's going on in the figures from the captions and the text. I can imagine the book being good if you're taking a genetics course, but if you're just trying to read it and teach yourself, be prepared to be often confused...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent genetics textbook and reference
I've used this book quite extensively in my introductory Genetics class, and I'm sure I'll be using it often as a reference in the future. It is superbly written, with clear explanations of the material.

There are many, many diagrams and photographs which help to solidify understanding, and they are all in full color. It is organized very well, although this organization has changed from edition to edition and any teacher or student using it in their courses should be aware that chapters and problems in this newer version do not always coincide with those in previous editions. The questions are excellent as well, although purchasing the solutions manual is a wise idea (it is also very well done, with long, detailed explanations of the answers to the problems).

Overall, of the 3 or 4 genetics textbooks I've looked at, this is by far the best one. In fact, it's one of the best textbooks I've ever used for any class. This one's a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
I work in a Mammalian Genetics lab, I have referenced this book numerous times and I have only had it a little over a month. It is those little things we forget, but now that information is at my fingertips. Excellent, would recommend it to anyone in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Textbook of genetics
I used this Genetics textbook of Griffiths et.al when I was an undergraduate student at University of Michigan. The best part that I got from this book was its excellent problem sets given at the end of each chapter. Having taken several courses of Genetics, I believe that the best way to master this class is to practice as many problems as we can. This book is therefore a good start of a long road. Another strong part of this text is its clear and beautiful pictures. The authors may not use many words to explain the concepts but the pictures they show is spectacular. The organization is up-dated to balance between classical and molecular genetics. This book might be a bit expensive. yet it is worth having it if you plan to work in this field.

5-0 out of 5 stars I don't know HOW they keep DOING it!
I have kept up with all of the editions of 'An Introduction to Genetic Analysis' since the first (a thin, red textbook that covered the bare basics of gene mutations and chromosome mechanics), and found every single one of them to be absolutely outstanding! I would recommend this as an introductory genetics textbook for every university that teaches basic genetics. There is enough material in this book to allow individual instructors to pick and choose which chapters and which subjects they would like to cover, without having to sacrafice anything. If you buy this book you have it all. It has chapters on basic genetics, chromosome mechanics, human genetic diseases, population genetics, genetic engineering, forensics, molecular biology, and biotechnology. No subject is neglected. It is well written, highly lucid, and VERY pleasing to the eye (with beautiful photographs and illustrations). Every chapter includes a problem solving section with solved problems. Therefore the instructor has the option of teaching either a conceptual course or a more problem oriented course. Problems range in difficulty from the trivial to the impossible. (Well, at least to the 'full pot of coffee and a bottle of asparin' level of difficulty.) These problems also represent a valuable resource from which examiners could potentially derive exam questions.) One can't say too many good things about these books. If the more recent editions are not available, but you have access to the earlier editions, I would still recommend using them. The basic material is so well dealt with that the older editions are still useful. Greg Doheny (Vancouver B.C.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good First Textbook
I've had my copy of Aquatic Entomology for almost 15 years now. I still refer to it quite often. It's a great first text for someone wanting to learn the craft of identification of aquatic insects. This IS a technical book, but not as technical as some (Merrit and Cummings for example). If your a fisherman who only wants to know what a Mayfly, Caddisfly or Stonefly looks like, then this book is not for you. This book also assumes some basic knowledge of aquatic insects. If you want to be able to recognize the major families of these (and other) orders than this is a great book to start with. There is a lot of information for the fisherman who is willing to "read between the lines". Know the basic natural history of certain insect groups will help one to be a better fisherman. This text also gives the basics of aquatic insect collection and storage. There is a tremendous world of diversity in our streams, rivers and lakes. This is a great book to help one unlock the key to this world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text for beginning Aquatic Entomlogy enthusiasts!
I have personally taken an upper level Aquatic Entomology course from Dr. McCafferty at Purdue University. McCafferty's text is very well done, and very easy to use. The 'flow-chart' style identification keys are perfect for the non formally-trained entomologist. The illustrations are by Arwin Provonsha (who is also at Purdue Universtity). Arwin is one of the best scientific illustrators I have seen. Definately top-notch work! Some taxa are a bit out of date, notably the Hydrophilidae, but that is hardly a problem. Hopefully a revision will be published in the near future to keep this wonderful text current.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not designed for the Flyfisher.
Very little information is inserted that is of benefit to the flyfisher. Classifications are outdated and most of the text is complicated and useless. Some of the pictures (drawings) were great. It helped in identifying some of the basic insects.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb review of aquatic entomology in North America
McCafferty's authoritative work is directed at the nonspecialist, particularly anglers with a scientific bent and ecologists who are not entomologists. It is widely used as a basic text for aquatic entomology in universities, as well. It provides keys for insect families, detailed descriptions of orders, extensive information on life histories and habitats, and is sumptuously illustrated with line drawings, many in color, by A. V. Provonsha. It is the most complete and accessible work on the aquatic entomology of North America north of Mexico. It belongs on the shelf of every serious angler-entomologist.

A few of the taxa have changed names since the publication of the book in 1981, but this shouldn't prove to be problem for the intended audience.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lacking general information too Technical, good graphics.
I ordered from mail service and wish I hadn't. This book should be viewed first. Classification outdated. This book was too technical and incomplete. A very small portion was intended for fly fishers. The cost of this book would be better applied to many more up to date books designed for fly fishers interested in identification. ... Read more

Book Description

Human Evolutionary Genetics (HEG) is a groundbreaking text which for the first time brings together molecular genetics and genomics to the study of the origins and movements of human populations.

Starting with an overview of molecular genomics for the non-specialist (which can be a useful review for those with a more genetic background), the book shows how data from the post-genomic era can be used to examine human origins and the human colonization of the planet, richly illustrated with genetic trees and global maps.

For the first time in a textbook, the authors outline how genetic data and the understanding of our origins which emerges, can be applied to contemporary population analyses, including genealogies, forensics and medicine.

Drawing its material from a range of disciplines, this text is an invaluable resource for courses in:

• Human Evolution

• Human Variation

• Biological Anthropology

• Physical Anthropology

• Human Population Genetics ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading
Clearly laid out like one of the classic undergraduate textbooks (e.g. Genes VII, Albers et al.), this is the only up-to-date introduction in the field.

The authors make great efforts to link advances in genetics to other fields (e.g. linguistics, anthropology), as well as to organise chapters around key issues such as the spread of agriculture, offering space to key authors in these associated fields. Bibliographic/website sources are also well documented.

Evidently, coverage is broad rather than deep, but if you need some basic background (e.g. I wanted to understand how Y-chromosome sequence data illuminated prehistoric migrations but needed some basic information on microsatellites) before proceeding to original papers, then this is the book for you. ... Book Description

Streams is a handbook that combines a discussion of the ecology of streams and rivers, in layperson language, with an illustrated field guide of the plants and animals found in running waters of North America. 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great way to go to help in learning physiology
This is a wonderful aid in learning physiology. Physiology is one of the hardest subjects to learn, but this visual learning aid makes it easier. I used this book to help me with my anatomy and physiology classes in college. I also highly recommend Tortora's Principles of Anatomy and Physiology. Tortora is a very good author who can explain difficult concepts in an understandable way. For direct test preparation, these are a must--- Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations (Volume 1) and (Volume 2) by Patrick Leonardi. These study guides had similar questions that were asked on my college exams. If you want to get good grades, then definitely get these four books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to study
This is a great book and I would recommend this book to anyone taking a microbiology class either in undergrad or med school. Since most people are visual learners this books is quite valuable. I also used the following book:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
ISBN: 0971999635
This book is also available. I found this study guide to be very on target on the type of questions that were on my microbiology class in med school. Definitely get both books.

5-0 out of 5 stars It makes your life very simple... and easy
Don't be fooled by the title, this book in fact will colour up your life. The diagrams are easy to read, and the explanations in each page are wonderful. You will understand difficult concepts with very good cartoons that will be flashing before your eyes, at the test (I loved the explanation about Hb). Don't wait more and buy it. Use it after you've read your big book and the facts will be kept long time in your mind. Wonderful! Hooray for it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best way to learn Physiology
This book is incredible - authors have really latched onto a great teaching technique. The information is excellent, succinct and very complete. The drawings are incredibly detailed and FUN to color (ok I'm 52 and may be in my 2nd childhood, but this is an very effective way to learn a very complex subject.) I am a vet tech student going for a second career (and possible poverty) - classic midlife crisis - and this book is great. In addition to being very informative and intellectually stimulating, it is also relaxing to do the coloring. And, there are things I have learned that I will never forget because my mind immediately recalls me coloring the particular process. Wish there were a similar Anatomy book that concentrated more on veterinary anatomy - the parallel coloring book for Anatomy is very human-centered.

Two criticisms:

1) I think the authors are trying to save you $$$ so they say you only need 10 colored pencils - save yourself frustration and buy the Crayola box of 32 at any art store - only $8.50 or so - and save yourself some grief - there are many plates that need more than 10 colors.

2) There are a few errors in the coloring notes - not too many - but they do exist, so if something seems wrong, just use your common sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review of Physiology
I found this to be an excellent self-study review of a subject whose details were becoming vague in my mind. The attention required to color each page requires that the reader attend to each aspect of the subject so that it stays with him; it is not forgotten immediately as are so many written texts. The Anatomy Coloring Book makes a good companion to this workbook. Alone, the anatomy book is a bit too elemental but it is useful in conjunction with this excellent exposition of basic physiology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Biostatistics Book for the Non-statistician
I was delighted to discover this book four years ago, when I began teaching a course in clinical research methods. I have not seen anything else like the text or the optional companion software by GraphPad. The textbook is extremely well-written and well-organized. Not only have I been using the book and software in my teaching, but I have found that they handle about 90% of my own statistical needs for my research.

The author's philosophy (to forget the fancy stuff since the vast majority of applications don't require it) and the way it is implemented (with just enough theory to protect users from making false inferences) are exactly right. Dr. Motulsky has done a a superb job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent non-mathematical overview
Dr. Motulsky does an excellent job of introducing statistical concepts through examples and direct applications. Where this book is especially valuable is in keeping things simple -- without the intimidating mathematical notation -- while providing examples of where statistics can be used to measure the wrong things or present results that do not make sense in the context of what the researcher is investigating.

My favorite example illustrates how a stastical analysis of a new test that identifies those susceptible to a fatal disease "shows" an increase in the average lifespan of both populations (those who suffer the disease and those who don't). The reality, of course, is no one is living longer because of the test, but rather the population sampled is different. Brilliant and concise.

Although the text is targeted towards those in the bioinformatic and medical vocations, it's useful beyond that because the presentation of concepts is practical and yet without the notation.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent introduction to biostatistics
I used this book when writing a manuscript for publication. I stumbled across the author's web site, and found his approach remarkably useful. The book is clear and concise. It encompasses all general statistical methods needed for biomedical publishing for both basic and clinical research. It serves as an indespensible introduction for those, who like me, either never understood biostats as taught in medical school or who have not used these skills often enough to develop adequate familiarity with the methods and their application. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars ACCESSIBLE
I am very grateful that a professor of mine used this book for her class...I had flipped thru other stats books prior to taking her class, and the contents of those other books looked all too similar to the mathematics books that had tortured me for years.
Intuitive Biostatistics is actually enjoyable to read, and it usually teaches at a pace that is reasonable. Many of the examples were quite relevant to my area of study - Nutrition.
Wish more texts were like this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless resource for my Prelims!
This book was an excellent choice for me to help review biostats for my prelims! Yes, although it doesn't focus on details of the more advanced statistical analyses, it does offer a common sense approach to data analysis. The assumptions for each test are clearly delineated, and the table at the back of the book is a quick reference for choosing tests based on what type of data you have. This is the ONLY biostatistics book I have read cover to cover. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Bio E/M Reviewer, but with minor Limitations
I used the 2003-2004 edition when I was prepping for my own Bio E/M SAT. Overall, I was pretty pleased with what I got.

This is definitely a pretty solid 'workbook', runs through all of the nuts & bolts of everything from physiology to molecular bio. I had my bio teacher helping me prep back then, and it definitely worked better.

Sometimes, this book can get a little overwhelming with all the terms and functions to understand and memorize. A key example would probably be the parts on physiology. However, it does a pretty good job of breaking the material down to a summary in the end. Sure, I did get to read through the whole book, but it would not have been possible without anyone else nearby who I could have asked about confusions that may have arisen from this book.

I would have given this book 4.5 / 5. But considering that there's no 4.5, I'd have to settle for a 4. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Outdated, but good introduction
It helped me as a lay person to get some insight into genetics and genetic technology. I knew nothing about it before that book and was quite surprised how far they already are. It shows genetic principles and many methods to operate on genes to learn more or to make them do what we want. But remember: It's totally outdated. Missing are a presentation how far genetic engeneering did already change the world. It's not just a few plants in a test lab, but tens of thousands of changed plants and microbes. DNA research is no more isolated from it's application. Whatever they discover is soon built into nature.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book for students
This book shows the basic concepts in the DNA study. It's good to have as a reference book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Now hopelessly outdated
Still a decent, but hardly exceptional, introduction to Recombinant DNA. The writing is often hazy, especially if you are not familiar with DNA-speak. I find it a frustrating and unsatisfying read and scientific experience.

Update in 2003: they want $100 for this?!?

GMZ, PhD

1-0 out of 5 stars Lacking the sauce....
For those who are just entering the world of genetics, this would be a good overview to basic principles and an easy read. For those who are in search of a guidebook to identify details about genetic recombination procedures, you are wasting your money. The text goes into no in-depth analysis of PCR techniques to Human Genetic experiments. Very disappointed, yet what would you expect from a non-traditional scientists such as James Watson.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre attempt for a difficult subject.
This book leaves readers with tons of questions. In some instances, information vital to understanding of the material is left out. The diagrams, however, are very helpful. Authors use confusing lingo which make a visual picture very unclear. Overall, the book lacks the technicality required for a good textbook. In-depth knowledge of the topics presented in this text requires the use of other resources. ... Read more
