Book Description

Molecular Driving Forces is an introductory statistical thermodynamics text that describes the principles and forces that drive chemical and biological processes. It shows how the complex behaviors of molecules can result from a few simple physical processes, and a central theme is how simple models can give surprisingly accurate insights into the workings of the molecular world.

Written in a clear and reader-friendly style, the book gives an excellent introduction to the subject for novices. It should be useful to those who want to develop their understanding of this important field, seeing how physical principles can be applied to the study of modern problems in the chemical, biological, and materials sciences. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Want to understand the physics if life? Need to read this!
The topic of this book, the physical chemistry of molecules, especially those relevant to biology, is one of the most challenging courses to a college student in chemist. But these authors have tried to make it easy for you - and they succeed. They used figures, pictures and analogies to help you to understand some of the most sophisticated concepts in science. For example entropy. The authors are leading researchers in the field and they brought a unique perspective to the subject; the writing is very lucid. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Scientific Writing - A difficult task made easier
"Successful Scientific Writing" is a well written, user friendly and sometimes humorous guide to effective scientific writing. Even the wire, lay open binding is user friendly. The text is up to date, well organized and provides guidance on effective use of computers and software in the entire scientific endeavor. Of course the primary strength is in helping the reader through the writing and publication of the scientist's efforts. This concise work would be especially appropriate as a text in scientific writing classes. The exercises provided would be great student assignments. Additionally the exercises are fun and enhance points made in the text. Matthews, et al have given us a guide that is appropriate for advanced writers as well. Virtually every page has gems of wisdom or insights that will enhance the end result of scientific communication. This book may be especially helpful for those that are "stuck" in trying to get started writing or have complete "writers block". After reading and using this book, readers will likely be thankful that the authors have so adeptly conveyed their wisdom and vast experience in helping others to write with greater clarity and brevity.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but could be better
Our lab used this book for a study group on effective scientific writing. We are located in Korea, so with the exception of the instructor and I, all participants were not native speakers of English. As a result, this review is from the viewpoint of foreign students. It is based on chapter reviews written by the members of our lab after finishing the book.

The book is just what it claims to be, a step-by-step approach to writing a scientific manuscript intended for publication. The first chapter helpfully furnishes a checklist (Table 1.3) for preparing a research paper. The chapter is actually a summary of the rest of the book so a reader already in the process of writing can easily find which chapter they wish to skip to via Table 1.3.

In the subsequent chapters, the authors provide good advice accompanied by helpful tables, examples and exercises, although the figure chapter could have used more tips on actually preparing the figures. Examples of poorly prepared and corrected figures would be a useful study aid. One student suggested that the second chapter on computer use was not particularly informative for graduate-level students. Regarding the chapter on grammar (chapter 6), another student pointed out that in some scientific articles, ungrammatical sentences are not corrected in order to effectively deliver the point.

The overall use of informal expressions and phrases seemed intended to make the text livelier for English-speaking students, but was confusing for several participants with English as a second language. We would like to suggest that the authors take their own advice and refrain from using slang and jargon. Several of us liked Appendix 2 and thought it was a good read for those unfamiliar with the practice of journal editors.

Apparently the authors had intended to attract those who had not already submitted a manuscript to read their book, but Successful Scientific Writing contains many helpful pointers for published scientists and journal editors, as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Watch what you eat!
Words can hardly express the beauty and cleverness of "Successful Scientific Writing" by Matthews, Bowen and Matthews as a step-by-step guide on how to write scientific reports for publication in English. I am using this book for a course that I teach on scientific writing at the Postgraduate School of Health Sciences at Aarhus University in Denmark, and I find it to be perfect! Before this book was published, there was none that dealt so well and so entertainingly with so many aspects of what it actually takes to prepare a manuscript for publication in a scientific journal. Many young (and old) scientists are good thinkers, but they are often poor writers! Thus, although they may have been able to design and carry out an experiment, they often lack the ability to express what they have done clearly and concisely. This book is for them! The first few chapters provide mainly words of encouragement for getting the writing process underway. There are also remarkable bits of advice, such as the notion of avoiding certan snacks that could derail ones momentum. In my view, the crux of the book appears in chapters 5, 6 and 7 in which extraordinarily lucid and practical instructions and exercises are presented for improving one's ability to write scientifically. There are also tips on how to optimize word-processing so that the manuscript submitted to the editor of a journal is most likely to be accepted for publication. Perhaps some old-timers in Science can do without this book, but they should nevertheless have a copy of it on hand for their students.

4-0 out of 5 stars well written and worthwhile
it is unfortunate the authors did not review the most recent scientific style and format conventions of the council of biology editors(accepted internationally) that were published in 1994. had they done so, they would not have made a number of the errors that show up scattered about in the text. i use parts of this text , especially the exercises, in a course i teach on scientific writing and have to make the corrections as we go along

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for scientists!
This book has greatly improved my writing. It is easy and enjoyable to read and very informative. I highly recommend it for anyone writing a thesis, manuscripts, etc. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It Is Not A Textbook ! It Is A Referance Book!
The book, at least from my point of view, is not a good book to grasp the core concepts of Biochemistry from at the beginning of your biochemistry course.Actually,it is a tool by which you can get a deep understanding of the subject by the aid of other books that can give you the full picture of Biochemistry. Its advantage is in that it covers in details many of the topics that other books usually do not cover. I remember many times finding myself opening the book looking for some details that some professors mention as extra bits which are not found in the other textbooks and present in this book. I recommend it as a reference book for medical students but not a textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top-of-the-Pop reference book
I am a medical student having studied medicine and biochemistry for the past 3 years. I found the Harper's Biochemistry by a coincidence on the university library.......it is now my favored reference on biochemical and some physiological matters being very concise with more specific details than many other biochemistry textbooks. Said that, I might have more value in your last periods of biochemistry and physiology and as a reference for the rest of your study. Thats why you should go to the library to try it for a couple of months. But then again....you will not be disappointed. S. Wiedemann - Denmark.

5-0 out of 5 stars Harper's Illustrated Biochemistry
This edition is brilliant. The authors did a fantastic job in displaying such difficult information. The chapter summaries are key for holistic understanding, and the illustrations are very simplistic and highly memorable. Indeed, a job well done. It is perfect for any medical biochemistry course, and the added molecular biology completes the biochemical literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars The don juan for biochem books
As a Doctor of Pharmacy student, I came across this book during the beginning of the semester while taking biochemistry. This book in my opinion should be owned by all students in the medicinal field. Getting an A in the class was made alot easier to me just because of this book. I found myself using Harper's more than the original required class text book. At a great price compartively with information given..this book is a must. Ive also used Lippincotts Illustrated Biochemistry,as good as that book is, I would say spend the extra 15$ and get one that is alot more in detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed information presented in a succinct manner
This is the best biochemistry book for medical students on the market. Medical students need a biochemistry textbook that balances detail with brevity. Harper's biochem does this very well. The chapters are well organized, well written and quite short. The brevity of each chapter makes it easy to digest in one sitting. It also allows specificity as you do not have to scan large chapters looking for information. There is a good balance of diagrams and text and the diagrams are of good quality. The 26th edition is shorter than the 25th edition and the information is more condensed, some chapters have been removed and the information incorporated into existing chapters. Many of the excellent diagrams are retained from the 25th edition. I recommend this text to all medical students. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The beginner's viewpoint
Frankly, I am aghast that the publisher calls this book accessible and appropriate for beginners. I purchased it as the required text for an introductory biometry class, and it has contributed very little to my understanding of biostatistical analysis. After chapter 7 (at best), it is simply incomprehensible. The mathematical notation requires far more than a high school algebra background, and the wording is extremely terse. Yes, it does offer real-world examples, and yes, it does offer a large range of statistical tables, and I am sure that it is good reference for people who are already working as statisticians and who have advanced degrees in statistics. However, it is misleading to call Zar a good introductory text - it is completely inappropriate for beginners. It is too concise in a situation where more words would be useful. Sokal and Rohlf 2nd ed. is far better; Fowler et al. also proved helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Desk Reference for Biologists
I have found this book more approachable and user friendly than Sokal and Rohlf. Zar is an excellent desk reference, and has solved a number of statistical problems for me. I reccomend it to anybody who regularly uses statistics in a biological context.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Biostat Book
You will not go wrong with this book. It is the best general
biostatistical book in print. You will need to study it for it is not a cook book, but it is well written. An absolute must book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Concise but not beginner friendly
This book is very concise and very mathemically based. It does a good job at presenting the mathematical models of statistics but it does a lousy job at explaining biostatistics in a conceptual manner. Maybe a great book for those who love mathemical models and notations but definitely not recommended for someone who is trying to understand biostatistics conceptually. If you are a scientist with a weak bacdground in statistics, you may find it a waste of time to try to understand this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars one of the most popular introductory biostatistics books
This book is popular because it is well written and authoritative. It is written for biologists, medical students and researchers who do not have any prior knowledge of probability or statistics and may have little mathematical training as well. It serves as an introductory text providing many homework exercises. It can also be used as a reference. It is very thorough and covers most of the important topics required for biological problems. The needed probability is introduced when necessary.

There is the usual emphasis on hypothesis testing and regression. Correlation and analysis of variance are also very well covered. Important issues of sample size determination are covered and many solutions are provided in easy to use box descriptions.

As the author points out in the preface, in order to make this text a good reference it is extensive (663 pages of text followed by appendices and a large number of tables). It also includes a wealth of useful reference articles and books. Consequently, there is too much material for a one semester course. The author provides instructors with guidelines for sections to cover in an introductory course.

Notable topics covered in this text that is rarely found in introductory biostatistics books include multivariate methods especially the multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA)and inference for circular data.

Recent developments in meta analysis, Bayesian statistics and bootstrap methods are not covered. In fact, these topics are not covered at all. Also, the important topic of missing data is omitted. Outliers are only covered briefly and just a few references are given but the major references, the texts by Hawkins and the treatise of Barnett and Lewis are neglected.

I am currently working on an elementary text that will have the advantage of some real world applications and modern developments. There are a few other elementary statistical texts for biology that are worth considering including Motulsky's "Intuitive Biostatistics" and Riffenburgh's "Statistics in Medicine". My favorite is the slightly more advanced "Practical Statistics for Medical Research" by Doug Altman. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars if you are considereing buying this book
to be honest, unless you like to study a lot and memorize the book (perhaps will make you feel safer?), you probably shouldn't buy this book. too much information unless you want to get above a 750. basically the diagnostic tests are okay, not very accurate, but it helps you to learn. my advice is buy this book if you are a good biology student.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biology is cool!
The test is freakin hard, but the book helps if you use it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Guide to the SAT II Biology E/M
Kaplan SAT II Biology E/M (2003-2004) is excellent preparation for the SAT II test. This book, coupled with my Cliff's AP Biology (2nd Edition) helped me score a 770 on the SAT II M test. Every test topic is covered in this book, and it thoroughly prepares you for the SAT II test with three full-length practice tests (one diagnostic, one M-option, and one E-option) and a great glossary for vocabulary review. Similar books, such as the Princeton Review (2003-2004) or Barron's (13th Edition) do not provide a realistic preparation for the SAT II test--Princeton Review provides too little information to score well, and Barron's has numerous typos and a large amount of extraneous information. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in scoring well on the SAT II test.

5-0 out of 5 stars More info than most textbooks
People say this book has too much needless information. Would you rather have a book with too little? Hey look at it like this- you're covered for the test and you come away with a little extra knowledge that will stay with you for your life. Is that so bad? If it is that bad then you should quit school. By far I thought this was the best bio prep book I bought.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
Anyone who took the AP in biology should just look at this book a couple days before. I took the AP and then two days before I read the entire book. The book is very thorough and goes through every possible topic. After reading this book I got a 790 on the satII. If your a freshman and are planning to take the AP in your juniour year I would highly suggest that you wait until you take the AP since most freshman bio classes are insufficient for the satII, especially freshman in NY since the idiots in Albany made a stupid living environment course. However if you study hard from this book and your a good bio student you probably will be able to pull off a 700. I would also suggest to take the molecular. Its actually quite easy especially for AP students. The ecology part is more like interpeting pictures which is hard to study. Also dont waste your time on any other book. This is all you need. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The original nursing textbook
Florence Nightingale was the first "modern" nurse. Her methods were revolutionary in her time, and they form the basis for the techniques of patient management that have been taught ever since. Anyone interested in the healthcare process, nursing, or notable women in history would do well to read this little volume. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Microbe Hunters
I first read this book when I was in grammar school (K-6 level)and found it absolutely fascinating. I couldn't put it down. As a graduate of UC-Berkeley (BA, MS in biology), I highly recommend it not only to aspiring scientists, but to all who enjoy 'mysteries' - true life mysteries! When I was a med student at Albany Medical College, we took physiology and pharmacology in the "T-Smith" building. Theobald Smith was a grad of AMC. You will find his story here in "Ticks and Texas Fever". My copy is falling apart, but I consider it an old friend. It is one book that should be in everyone's library. I disagree (as one reviewer said) that it is "racist". I also disagree that it is not for youngsters. Get this book and treasure it!

5-0 out of 5 stars An entertaining account of the founders of microbiology.
This book should put all other science stories to shame! First published in 1926, de Kruif elegantly and creatively describes the life and times of microbe hunters, from the very first man to peer into a lense and see the "wretched beasties." The stories are humerous, includes the family influences and accidental occurances with each discovery. A great addition for any science or medical buff! Also enjoyable but a little more tough to read "The Hot Zone" and "The Andromeda Strain" and "The Comming Plauge". I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!! :

5-0 out of 5 stars Transition in Time
"The Microbe Hunters" charts the amazing shift in medical knowledge from both the historical and philisophical viewpoints. Dr. de Kruif's genius lies in the fact that he can transform the highly technical jargon of medicine into a compelling story of men versus nature. It is very readable!
He maps the course that men such as Pasture and Koch blazed into the realm of scientific methodology that is still revered today. You will feel the heat of the battle as the individuals depicted herein challenged the conventional wisdom of their day and transformed medicine from superstition to a healing art.
I was first introduced to the book in a class on microbiology, but obtained a true education in how curiosity, dedication and perserverance on the part of a few pioneers changed our view of nature forever. This book is a must read for anyone wanting to undrstand numan nature or the strange and wonderful word of pathogens. As a college professor I recomend this book to anyone who wants to find the inspiration for education in one book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ripping good stories, better than any fiction
Wonderful book, lively prose, vivid descriptions of the dawn of modern medicine as it was developed in army hospitals, jungles, swamps, and cramped attic "laboratories." And lines like "... the fundemental sadness of Pasteur's life, ....the crown of thorns that madmen wear whose dream it is to change a world in the little seventy years they are allowed to live."

Too bad descriptions of blacks as "darkies" (1924) will keep this book out of the hands of some kids. But come on, these scientists risked their lives and very often died trying to cure the sick in Africa. So can we can cut them a little slack for not being as gloriously enlightened as us, even if they were infintely braver ?

People familiar with biethics or medicine will see a world where many ethical questions that had not been defined. For instance, informed consent and double blind trials were hardly known - almost *none* of the experimental treatments could be done legally today, even though the researchers often used themselves as subjects and died.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best accounts...
I read it when I was a teenager. I still find it perhaps the best account on the early microbe discoverers. Chapters on Van Leeuwenhoek (first thing I did when I arrived in Holland was to look for his house, in Delft...), Spallanzani and Pasteur are masterpieces in itself. Hard to put down. ... Read more

"One of the real tests of writers," notes Ackerman in this liveliest of nature books, "is how well they write about smells. If they can't describe the scent of sanctity in a church, can you trust them to describe the suburbs of the heart?" Ackerman passes the test, writing with ease and fluency about the five senses. Did you know that bat guano smells like stale Wheat Thins? That Bach's music can quell anger around the world? That the leaves that shimmer so beautifully in fall have "no adaptive purpose"? Ackerman does, and she guides us through questions of sensation with an eye for the amusingly arcane reference and just the right phrase. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Poetry and Science
When I first read Diane Ackerman's book it opened my eyes, just as these other reviews testify. It does seem to be a book people either love or hate (I have some friends who thought it was sentimental babbling) but that doesn't change how extravagantly Ackerman uses language itself to convey the lush world of the senses. I teach a creative writing course at SFSU and I use the book to promote both that poetic description and the possibilities for experience and awareness the book evokes. An excellent example of the ways poetry can be used to explain science and experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars A cultural, creative, and sensory delight
After reading a few of Ackerman's New Yorker pieces, as well as The Moon by Whale Light and her contribution to Sisters of the Earth, I knew I would eventually read all of her books. A Natural History of the Senses does not disappoint. It flows like cool water through literature, history, music, politics, philosophy, and poetry. As a writer, I appreciate this book as a resource of my own, a way to deepen my understanding of our sensory appreciation of the world - but also as an example of beautiful writing by a master of the craft.
In a nutshell, I wish Diane Ackerman lived next door to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life...
I read "A Natural History of the Senses" about ten years ago just a few months out of art school. I thought that I was fully engaged in the world and was aware of all that was around me. I soon learned that I was mistaken. I had been moving through the world virtually half-asleeep, just pushing my way through crowds and not really paying attention. I began opening myself fully to all experiences (through my senses) and I started to feel alive in a new way. I began a slow but steady transformation that has meant everything to me. Touch moved me most and eventually I went back to school and became a Massage Therapist. I am able, not only to experience my world in a new way; but I am also able to share something as comforting as massage with someone else. That is truly amazing!!

Diane Ackerman's style is enlightening and poetic. A Natural History of the Senses is one of those books that you share with good friends and read over and over again. I still have my very first paperback copy (now autographed and a bit tattered) and it inspires me to be aware every day!

4-0 out of 5 stars Delightful prose and broad brush strokes of wonder!
DA has a wonderful writing style that makes reading her book a sensory pleasure in its own. At the risk of sounding sexist, it must be mentioned that the power of this book lies in the wonderfully delicate and detailed descriptions of the various senses and their experiences. While DA has chosen a subject that is reasonably biological, it is her descriptive flair for the minutiae, her almost artistic way of writing and her sense of joy and wonder which she conveys; all make this book a wonderfully engrossing tale about our sense organs.

While DA succeeds at opening our eyes (and ears, nose.... etc) to the world around us, perhaps the only shortcoming of the book lies in creating expectations in the reader of a rigorous treatment in the biological/evolutionary development of the sense organs. The reader seeking such a detailed analysis of the senses and their development would be served better by looking elsewhere. However, this book is a tasty little morsel and food for thought.

Definitely worth a read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adventures in sensuality.
Diane Ackerman not only explains why the fall leaves are changing colors outside my window (p. 257), but why the prairie dogs also living here are color-blind to the change of seasons (p. 265). In her fascinating study of the human senses, Ackerman, a poet and naturalist, demonstrates her talent for blending art, history, anthropology, psychology, literature, and natural science to define one of life's biggest questions: what it means to be human and fully alive. In understanding "the gorgeous fever that is consciousness," she explores the origin and evolution of the five senses, how they vary culturally, their limits and taboos, their folklore and science, and "what they can teach us about the ravishing world we have the privilege to inhabit" (p. xix). Along the way, obviously in love with the mysteries of life, Ackerman explains such things as why eating chocolate reproduces the sense of well-being we feel when we're in love (p. 154), why eating $500-a-pound truffles "make one's loins smolder like those of randy lions" (p. 161), why we close our eyes when we kiss (p. 230), and why we spend forty-nine million dollars on a van Gogh painting (p. 268). Reading A NATURAL HISTORY OF THE SENSES brought me to the edge of my senses. This book is among the best books I've ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essentials of A & P
From beginning to end, descriptive text and detailed illustration takes the reader on a magic carpet ride through the human body. Soaring over every anatomical location and pointing out all of their physiological functions, each page is overflowing with mesmerizing information. A student armed with the endless knowledge within these pages is sure to prosper in any course related to this subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good bargin Book on A & P
This is a great book for anyone that needs a small (less than 700 pages) book to look up basic concepts. I bought a used copy as a low cost way to start an A&P library. Medical students may not want to use this book unless they are in their very first year and know nothing about anatomy and physiology; but anyone in the allied health field will want to keep this one handy. Anyone who is willing to immerse himself in this book will definitely acquire a good working knowledge of A & P. I found numerous chapters that were great starting points to motivate deeper study. For instance, the Chapter on Muscles is very useful. It provide views of each major muscle, along with a diagram that lists what type of motion the muscle creates, and it's origin & insertion points. Many chapters have clinical examples as well as special sections that deal with aging and it's effects on the body's systems. If you are on a tight budget, get a used copy and you won't be disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why I like this book.
My daughter who is taking a course in nursing likes this book.
I find this book neat and the illustrations done by Dr William
Ober clear and easy to the eyes. If you are not anybody who is
involved in the health or medical studies, and wish to know
more about the human body (anatomy and physiology), then I highly
recommend this concise "essentials" book. Take a look at page
132, Figure 6-6, you actually get to see the whole of human
skeletal system which appears as photograph, not a drawing. I
can use this page to show my children what the human skeleton
looks like and name the parts, which are clearly labelled. The
reason I have given 4 stars because I cannot say this book is
100% perfect. The authors will later improve it in their future
editions, still this is a good buy ...you won't regret.

1-0 out of 5 stars This Book is A Hard Book to find anything
This book is way to complicated. It is not very helpful to tryto find information in an easy simple manner. I would try to findanother book for anatomy and physiology!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best educational physiology book!
I am a medicalstudent from Sweden. When I was about to begin studying anathomy and physiology the trouble was to find a book that gave the most knowledge in an easy, understandable way. After searching through all the books I found this one, Essentials of anathomy and physiology, the best buy all over. ... Read more

Book Description

Because molecular and cellular biology is such an exciting and rapidly moving area of science, teaching it at the undergraduate level is a rewarding, yet challenging, task. The Cell: A Molecular Approach meets this challenge by providing students with not only the most current information, but also with an introduction to the experimental nature of contemporary research. Designed for use in introductory cell biology courses, The Cell presents current comprehensive science in a readable and cohesive text that students can master in the course of one semester.

The new Third Edition of The Cell retains the organization, themes, and special features of earlier editions, but is updated to reflect scientific advances since publication of the Second Edition in 2000, including:

* progress that has been made in genome sequencing
* advances in understanding transcriptional regulation and mRNA processing
* the use of DNA microarrays in global studies of gene expression and cancer diagnostics
* advances in nuclear transport and protein trafficking
* progress in understanding the regulation of programmed cell death
* potential medical applications of embryonic stem cells
* the development of oncogene-targeted cancer treatments

SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE CELL

With a clear focus on cell biology as an integrative theme, topics such as developmental biology, plant biology, the immune system, the nervous system, and muscle physiology are covered in their broader biological context.

"Key Experiment" boxes in each chapter describe seminal experiments in modern cell biology, showing the details and background to give students a sense of doing science.

"Molecular Medicine" boxes relate basic science to clinical practice or potential and show the excitement of molecular discovery and solutions to disease.

Chapter summaries are organized in outline form corresponding to the major sections and subsections of each chapter. This section-by-section format is coupled with a list of the key terms introduced in each section, providing a succinct but comprehensive review of the material.

The full-color art program is both pedagogically and scientifically outstanding.

In addition, each chapter includes: a brief chapter outline, bold-faced key terms (also defined in the glossary), and chapter-end questions (15 per chapter) with answers in the back of the book. The deliberate and cumulative result of this pedagogy is a book that students can master. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The cooper cell
This book contained very usefull text information especially for whom undertaking cell biology. It as also recommended by Lecturers in Victoria University of Technology, in Australia. It provides excellent details of cell functions and related items in both the general view and the molecular view. The older version is also a very good source, but I think it is a bit out dated. I would recommend this text to whom is studying cell biology.

5-0 out of 5 stars New! Second Edition of Cooper text is available!
The field of cell biology is so vast and changing so rapidly that teaching it can be a daunting prospect. The First Edition of The Cell: A Molecular Approach, published in 1997, offered the perfect solution for teachers and their students--current, comprehensive science combined with the readability and cohesiveness of a single-authored text. Designed for one-semester introductory cell biology courses, this book enabled students to master the material in the entire book, not simply to sample a small fraction from a much larger text. The new Second Edition of The Cell retains the organization, themes, and special features of the original, but it has been completely updated in major areas of scientific progress, including: genome analysis; chromatin and transcription; nuclear transport; protein sorting and trafficking; signal transduction; the cell cycle; and programmed cell death.

The new Second Edition was published June 16, 2000.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent basic book
I teach cellular biolgy in senior hihg school, and I found in this book an excellent tool, were my students can find the basic information that they need. The CD is also a great idea, because the students can see some proceses in motion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory book
I am an engineer by training and I am interested in appling biological principles to solving engineering problems (I am also the author of a book entitled Intelligent Systems for Engineering: A Knowledge-based Approach). Prof. Cooper's book is an amazingly well written book. Anyone can easily understand the concepts presented. My only advice to the author is to make the CD-ROM more interactive and if possible add narration. Congratuations on writing such an excellent book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is like, the best!
I would like everyone to know that this book is super great. I was like so confused at first, but now everything is crystal clear. I learned that fertilization in a plant occurs in it's uterus and after gastrulation occurs the spores shoot out of the carpel and undergo a meiotic phase called the acrosomal stage. So like, if you're stumped about which bio book to get, you should totally get this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb laboratory manual.
The Biology Laboratory Manual by Guttman, Vodopich, Johnson, Raven, and Moore provides an easy to follow approach to introductory biology. It features many activities that can be completed on average between 2 and 3 hours. There are many photos and diagrams that are in full color, many pre-laboratory type questions, and a good amount of questions that are best answered during lab or after lab. This book is ideal for an advanced high school biology course or a freshman or sophomore college biology class. Unlike a fair amount of the laboratory texts out there, this one accompanies most biology books very well. Thus, the laboratory portion of class tends to blend very well with the lecture portion. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars best genetics text available
The Stansfield/Elrod outline remains as comprehensive as any of the intro to genetics textbooks currently available. At about 10-15% the cost of the "standard" texts, this outline delivers the same material with more clarity, and often more accuracy. The concepts of classical genetics, which often prove more challenging for students than molecular aspects, are covered admirably in this book. While those who enjoy colorful illustration and pastel text boxes might be disappointed, the b&w figures in this book are extremely clear, logical and most importantly helpful towards learning the material. No solution manual or supplemental CD-ROM is required. Highly recommended as a reference, or as a text for general genetics classes.

5-0 out of 5 stars real bargain
Comparable in scope, clarity, completeness, and accuracy to any of the very expensive general genetics texts currently available. And with this one there's nothing else to buy...no study guides, solution manuals, cd's or supplemental websites are required. The book stands alone, and does so for less than half the price of the solution manual for most texts. Particularly strong is the coverage of classical genetics, which can often be more difficult to grasp than the more modern "molecular" concepts of the science. Highly recommended for self-study, as a reference, or as a supplement to any genetics textbook. ... Read more

Book Description

In the genome era, the analysis of gene expression has become a critical requirement in many laboratories. But there has been no comprehensive source of strategic, conceptual, and technical information to guide this often complex task. Transcriptional Regulation in Eukaryotes answers that need. Written by two experienced investigators, Michael Carey and Stephen Smale at the UCLA School of Medicine, and based in part on the Gene Expression course taught at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, this book directly addresses all the concerns of a laboratory studying the regulation of a newly isolated gene and the biochemistry of a new transcription factor.

Chapter 1 reviews the state-of-the-art in the RNA polymerase II transcription field;

Chapters 2–10 are a systematic guide to the investigation of regulatory mechanisms for newly identified genes;

Chapters 11–15 discuss approaches for synthesizing recombinant transcription factors, analyzing their binding, and deciphering their mode of action.

Transcriptional Regulation in Eukaryotes reveals not only what to do but why, and how to plan properly for success. This approach is ideal for graduate students, physician-scientists, postdocs, and others entering the field, but is also valuable for established investigators undertaking in-depth studies in specific systems. ... I purchased this book for my lab and I cannot praise it highly enough. The only problem is that grad students and postdocs keep stealing it from my office and I'm always having to go out and hunt it down on someone's bench! When introducing a new technique to your lab, it is a good idea to read the chapater on that technique before you pick up your pipet. The descriptions of methodology and the degree of detail are first rate. I hope that Carey and Smale bring out a new edition soon that covers the new innovations in the transcription field from the five years since their current edition was published.
